Congratulations to The Dorset Players for a monumental finale to their 82nd season! The musical production of “The Secret Garden” was a pleasure for both young and old, as this version told a story beyond the children’s classic. Undeniably, the message of this musical is that life is precious.

The orphaned girl, the crippled boy, the hunchback man, the elderly gardener, and the poor servants all had value in this play; consequently, the audience felt an instinctual joy when these characters were acknowledged and gained happiness in the end. They were all wanted and needed. As the beautiful song from Dickon and Mary avowed: just as the unseen things in a garden are

Our 1815 Methodist Church has been sent to the “chopping block” — being demolished. Apparently economic times have entered into this decision. Still, it’s hard to understand why the town of Winhall would let this unique historical landmark slip away. This church building was a beautiful architectural structure that stood proudly in our little village of Bondville for generations. I believe that it is important that we understand the continuity of the past/present; linking future generations to the past gives them the needed anchor to move forward while preserving

Jerry Jay McCampbell Jerry Jay McCampbell, 59 years old, died peacefully in his sleep, May 13, after a 3 year battle with cancer. Jerry went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology to pursue his dream of becoming a physicist in 1967. After discovering the focus at that time was to make a nuclear bomb he abruptly changed paths, becoming instead a philosopher and a teacher. He was a man of great depth and wonder. He gave himself to teaching his students and supporting his colleagues for over 35 years. He was a dedicated, energetic and enthusiastic teacher, mentor and leader who inspired creativity and curiosity in his students with his hands-on approach. Jerry lived in Vermont and worked at Long Trail School for 12 years back in the late 70’s through 1990; when Long Trail was started in the basement of the Sportsman’s Club, up in Dorset

Hollow. He received his masters in education in 1996 and worked at Idyllwild Arts, in California for 19 years, retiring in April 2009. He was devoted to his family and leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Lucy, and two children, Paige, 27 and Liam, 18. Jerry we will miss you. A memorial service was held at the Idyllwild Arts amphitheater on Saturday, May 30. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you send donations to the Jerry McCampbell Memorial Science Award, Idyllwild Arts, P. O. Andrew S. Loewer Receives Honors

Andrew S. Loewer graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca NY on May 24, 2009. He was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts, Economics with distinction in all subjects. The son of Jeff Loewer of Londonderry, VT and Rebecca Sinden of Westfield, NJ, Andrew is a graduate of the Long Trail School in Dorset, VT. He will be joining Watson Wyatt in Arlington, VA as an Actuarial Analyst.

From my Corner

—Susan J. Coons ...sense of direction... By the time you’re 67 (as I am) your hair follicles lose their sense of direction, or maybe they just don’t want to travel too far. That’s what has happened to me. They now appear on my chin instead of my legs. While I was accustomed to shaving my legs, I’m not accustomed to shaving my chin! My daughter and I were shopping at Target in Latham about a month ago and I was telling her about my ‘hairy’ situation. Of course, she had noticed it herself, as probably everyone else who comes within two feet of my face (that’s if they’re wearing their glasses!). She immediately escorted me to the waxing section and handed me a product she said she has used in the past. Said it was pretty much pain free. (I’ve heard lots of tales about painful wax removal!) I waited several weeks to try this out. I’m not one to primp, nor am I one who wants to inflict pain, especially on myself! So, a few weeks later, on a Wednesday evening when she stayed over, I said “Why don’t we give it a try!” She microwaved the wax, making it kinda hot to the touch...brought it into the den and proceeded to apply it to my chin with a small ice cream stick.

It dripped onto my chest and nightie. I immediately tried to wipe it off my chest and got it on my fingers. Do you know the story of Brer’ Fox, Brer’ Rabbit and the Tar Baby?? Well, that was me. Everything I touched became sticky with wax! The remote control; the telephone; my glass; both of my hands... The wax was supposed to dry. It didn’t. I picked up a tablet by the phone and began to fan my chin. Still didn’t dry and all I had left was a sticky note pad! The situation reminded us of Chevy Chase in the movie “Christmas Vacation” when he had sap on his fingers and tried to read a magazine and later turn out the light! Catherine said, “Let’s get the hair dryer!” Absolutely not! Pictures of “House of Wax” horror came to my mind. Of course, we were laughing hysterically during this half hour of misery! Fortunately, a bottle of oil came with the package and after giving up all hope of the wax drying, we used it to remove the mess from my chin. Fast forward to this week...I had to cancel an appointment to have my hair cut because of a computer situation here at work (server down!) and my next appointment won’t be until the end of June. My daughter offered to cut my hair! If she trims hair the way she trims a shrub, which is just about down to the dirt, I don’t think so.

Rummage Sale/Bake Sale

Manchester Village Walking Tours

The Manchester Historical Society will again conduct Village Historic Walking Tours through the long history of Manchester Village. Tours will include the rich history leading up to the current Equinox Resort and Spa. The many architectural styles of the houses along Main Street in the Village will also be discussed. Tours begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, meeting at the concierge desk of the Equinox. Tours will be offered by appointment only through June (two hours notice, please). We go out daily from July 3 through mid-October with appointments appreciated. Magdeleine A. Dallemagne has received an Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) college scholarship offer to attend a selected host college or university. The cadet was selected to receive the scholarship certificate on the basis of comprehensive tests, high school scholastic achievement, and extra-curricular activities. The majority of Air Force ROTC scholarships cover full college/university tuition, provide textbook allowance, and pay most laboratory or incidental fees. In addition, at least a $300 tax-free monthly allowance is paid to recipients during the academic year. The estimated value of the scholarship depends on the student’s choice of school and type of scholarship offered. Upon graduation from college and completion of the ROTC program, the cadet will receive a bachelor’s degree and a commission of second lieutenant in the Air Force. Dallemagne is the daughter of Lt. Col. Paul and Katherine Dallemagne of County Route 61, Cambridge, N.Y. She is a 2009 graduate of Cambridge Central High School. ________________________________________________

Peru Town Hall Renovation

The Select Board of Peru is seeking public input on renovations to the Town Hall on Main Street. In order to meet the town’s current and future storage needs a storage vault is being considered as an addition to the building. The Select Board would like to hear from townspeople regarding use of all public buildings and thoughts on use of the Town Hall specifically. We will discuss this at the next regularly scheduled Select Board meeting on Wednesday., June 17, at 6:30 p.m.

Toastmasters to Elect New Ofﬁcers

��

The theme for the June 11 meeting of Equinox Valley Toastmasters (EVT) is “Persuade with Power,” with an emphasis on dramatic and memorable conclusions. This is appropriate since the meeting is also the time for election of six new officers to guide the club over the coming year. The new officers are expected to emphasize educational programming even more as well as reaching out to special communities. They are already considering one or two special programs next year geared to the needs of business and possible joint programs with community organizations and schools. While programs may vary thematically, each meeting always has three elements: (1) prepared speeches with assigned goals; (2) oral and written constructive evaluations; and (3) guided impromptu speaking to build confidence to address almost any topic in ready fashion. EVT provides the supportive environment to develop your speaking confidence and full range of communication and leadership. Guests are welcome. Knights of Columbus Breakfast

The Knights of Columbus will host their monthly breakfast on Sunday, June 14 after the 8 and 10 a.m. Masses at St. Paul’s Parish Hall, Manchester, VT. Cerretani, son of Beverly Buber, the co-owner of Mio Bistro in Pawlet, and step-son of Charles Gallant, General Sales Manager of Hand Motors in Manchester, graduated with highest honors and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree at Boston College’s 133rd Commencement on May 18. At Boston College, Alexander was a member of the Order of the Cross and Crown, the College of Arts and Sciences’ prestigious honor society, and he was recently awarded membership in Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest academic honor society. Invitation to membership in Phi Beta Kappa is a reflection of outstanding achievement. Each year, about one college senior in a hundred, nationwide, is invited to join Phi Beta Kappa. Alexander studied in Tokyo, Japan, last year and plans to return to Japan in the fall, where he will teach English for two years. He will then return to the U.S. to continue his education in his fields of study, International Studies and Asian Studies. Alexander is a 2005 graduate of Stanstead College, a secondary school in Stanstead, QC, Canada.

Mark Skinner Library Announces Trustee Appointments

The Mark Skinner Library Board of Trustees recently welcomed two new members to its ranks. “Maureen Cofelice and Kate Fox have agreed to serve starting immediately,”announced Christine Miles, President of the MSL Board of Trustees. Maureen Cofelice worked as a Registered Vascular Technologist and a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer in New Orleans and Houston prior to moving to Vermont. Cofelice is the Vice President of the American Women’s Club of Dublin, an educational and philanthropic organization, the past Vice President of the Maple Street School Parent Association, and a past member of the Ballet Manchester Board. Cofelice is a member of the Mark Skinner Library Advisory Board, the library’s Development Committee, and president of Club Byblos – the new Friends of MSL organization. “I am looking forward to being part of the team at MSL as it grows to meet the needs of the community,” stated Cofelice. Kate Fox is the Director of Communications and Development for Casting for Recovery, a Manchester, VT based national non-profit support and educational organization for breast cancer survivors. She spent over twenty years in print media, most recently as publisher of both Vermont Magazine and Saratoga Living. Kate is on the board of directors of GNAT-TV, and is a former board member and current volunteer fly-fishing instructor with Casting for Recovery. She has served as a volunteer with Recording for the Blind as well as public radio. “I’m very honored to join the board of trustees,” Fox said. “As an avid reader and lifetime library user I’ve a great deal of appreciation for the Mark Skinner Library’s key role in the community, and want to work to help ensure that the library meets current needs, and shapes itself to face its changing role, as the area’s public library.” Miles would like to remind the Manchester community that Mark Skinner Library board meetings take place on the first Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. and are open to the public. Burr and Burton Academy’s Summer Camps Now Taking Registrations

Sports, music, technology and so much more! Burr and Burton Academy is offering summer camps from early July to early August. Choose from more than a dozen different camps, including six new camps! AARP Drive Safely Program

On Saturday, June 27, from 8:30 a.m, to 12:30 p.m., in the Burr Burton Academy Library, Merlyn Miller, an Instructor for the AARP Driver Safety Program, has scheduled the new four-hour course. It is a classroom refresher course geared to persons 50 years of age and older, but anyone can benefit from taking it. Chloe French Receives Honors

Chloe French, daughter of Clark and Carmen French of Manchester Village, VT, received a bachelor’s degree from Smith College on Sunday, May 17. She was one of 684 seniors who graduated during the college’s 131st commencement exercises, at which pioneering Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin was the featured speaker. Misty Valley Books Offers New Sessions of French Language Courses

Misty Valley Books in Cheste, VT, will again offer two levels of French classes beginning the week of June 15. The Learn French courses will run for six weeks, intermediates on Mondays, beginning June 15, and beginners on Tuesdays, beginning June 16. From July 7 through July 11, the Southern Vermont Arts Center is very pleased to welcome back Brian Bomeisler’s world famous drawing workshop, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, which is based on the world famous book of the same name. Arlington Garden Club Meeting Jeff Young, Vermont Master Gardener and Curator of Lilacs for the University of Vermont Horticulture Farm in South Burlington, will be guest speaker at the Arlington Garden Club’s meeting on Tuesday, June 16, at the Lions Pavilion at the Arlington Park and Recreation Area. Dorset School faculty member Stephanie Sumner has been selected to attend the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teacher’s Academy this summer. The Academy offers a five-day program designed to provide third-through-fifthgrade teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to motivate students to pursue careers in science and math. Mrs. Sumner explains that her coursework will focus specifically on physics. She is eager to work with the nationally-respected instructors. Two of the leading teacher-training organizations in the U.S., Math Solutions Professional Development, founded by Marilyn Burns, and The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), design the curriculum, provide instructors and manage the daily activities of the Academy, which is based at the Liberty Science Museum in New Jersey. Dorset School is especially proud of Mrs. Sumner because she is one of only two Vermont educators chosen for this program. From 1600 applicants, only 100 are selected each year. All expenses are paid, museum discounts apply, and planned outings beyond the museum are included. Much of the instruction is hands-on, and Mrs. Sumner hopes to bring materials back to the Dorset School to use with her 5th and 6th grade students. She says that the Academy has been designed so that science is the content driver, and mathematics is the tool for learning the science. Fisher Teacher Cuts Hair for Charity

The Fisher Fifth Grade Trip to Boston, Mack Attack AAU Girls’ Basketball team and Lyrics for Life, a pediatric cancer non-profit, will all benefit from Pratico’s endeavor. Cooking Demo, Book Signing with Kate Krukowski Gooding

Kate is most well known for her wild game dishes, layering of spices and creative food combinations. You wouldn't expect that this cookbook author grew up in a meat and potatoes Polish/Irish family, where salt and pepper were the prominent spices at the table. Kate Krukowski Gooding's curious culinary journey began at the age of fourteen when her high school class embarked on a trip to Spain where she first discovered saffron. Shortly after her return she tasted her neighbor's delicious Thanksgiving turkey stuffing loaded with sage. These two spices launched a lifelong spice quest. From an eight-month stint traveling through Europe, to trips across North Africa, Central America, China and the Caribbean, Kate has researched indigenous herbs and spices while satisfying her travel bug. A New England native and self-taught chef, Kate gained culinary experience putting herself through college working in restaurants and catering businesses, as well as entertaining friends and family. After graduating from the University of Southern Maine and Northeastern University she embarked on a 23-year career in Sales and Marketing. Consulting work followed working for others; one such project was a cookbook idea for an entrepreneurial friend. Since Kate has been cooking, creating and collecting recipes since she was fifteen, the consulting project swiftly inspired her to create her own cookbook series. A constant in Kate's life since the 1970's has been a print of Auguste Renoir's "Luncheon at the Boating Party." He captured the simplicity and passion of friendship, food and wine that

Kate's version of Renoir's masterpiece is her annual Winter Solstice Party; 2008 marked the 19th annual celebration of friendship, food and wine. Over the years, anywhere from 20 to 70 guests have shared creations that include Eggplant Caviar, Beaver with Tamarind Barbeque Sauce, Layered Maine Shrimp Dip, Bear Bourguignon, Cardamom Spiced Pumpkin Roll and Homemade Strawberry Cordial. In the fall of 2007 Kate's first cookbook hit the shelves of almost 100 stores in Maine. Her first book signing coincided with the October moose hunt in Jackman, Maine, where with a winning moose lottery ticket, she and her brother Chris (a Jackman-based Master Maine Guide) bagged a 755 pound moose. The ample proceeds from the hunt were used to repay many hunters who contributed game meat when Kate was creating the just-launched cookbook, with plenty left over for creating new recipes for upcoming publications. With the success of Black Fly Stew: Wild Maine Recipes, Kate has been in demand: book signings, creating corporate cookbooks, cooking for private parties, television guest appearances, food and wine festival guest chef demonstrations, and discussion groups on self-publishing. The most prominent appearance to date was a segment on Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. Kate hosted Andrew Zimmern at her house on Mount Desert Island to taste Beaver Chili, Black Fly Muffins, Bean Hole Beans and Bull Moose Steak.

Killington Music Festival to Hold Beneﬁt

The Killington Music Festival will hold a Jazz and Garden Party on Sunday, June 14 at 4 p.m. at the home of Vicky and Bob Young in Proctor. Homeowners can get $1,500 Tax Credit

As part of the 2009 Economic Stimulus legislation, U.S. homeowners who purchase a 75-percent efficient biomass (wood or pellet) burning stove, insert or fireplace in 2009 or 2010 can receive a 30-percent tax credit for costs incurred, up to $1,500. This week the federal government released clarifying guidelines for qualifying biomass products, which includes many wood and pellet appliances from major stove manufacturers. High efficiency pellet and EPA-certified wood burning products are clean-burning, eliminating approximately 75-percent of the carbon emissions that are associated with fossil fuel heating. Pellet burning stoves, inserts and fireplaces have great heating efficiencies and low emissions. Pellets burn cleaner than virtually any other biomass fuel and produce low particulate matter, controlling air pollution. All pellet appliances are easy to operate with built-in fuel hoppers and feeding devices that move pellets in small groups to the combustion chamber. They feature wall-mounted thermostats that control heat and minimize fuel consumption. The 30% tax credit covers the costs for a qualifying appliance, the venting materials, hearth materials if necessary, and installation labor, up to a maximum cost of $5,000. The new appliance must be used as a heating source in an existing primary residence. After purchase, the homeowner can obtain an official Manufacturer’s Certificate from their local stove retailer. It certifies that the product qualifies for the tax credit and the homeowner can rely on it when preparing his or her taxes. Homeowners are not required to submit the certificate or a sales receipt to the government when filing their taxes, but should retain those items for their records. Adam W. Waite Receives J.D. degree from NYU Law

Adam W. Waite, a son of Perry and Becky Waite of Pawlet, received his Jurist Doctor Degree from NYU Law School on Friday, May 15 at the convocation held at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq, and the United Nations, gave the convocation address to Waite and the �� NYU Law Class of 2009, which was made up of 1,035 new J.D.s, LL.M.s, �� J.S.D.s, and holders of advanced certificates in law and business. �� Waite received his undergraduate degree from Middlebury College �� in Middlebury, VT and then taught in the Connecticut school system �� for four years prior to attending NYU Law School. Current plans include working for Chadbourne & Parke LLP �� at 30 Rockefeller Center in New York and studying for the New York bar exam.

Local Teacher Visits Korea as Guest Of The Korea Foundation

This July, Ron Eisenman of Winhall, Vermont will travel to South Korea as a participant in the Korean Studies Workshop for American Educators. Mr. Eisenman, from Rutland High School is one of 60 participants selected from over 400 applications through a competitive review process. The Korean Studies Workshop for American Educators is designed to enhance mutual understanding between the people of Korea and the United States by inviting U.S. educators to visit Korea and to share the knowledge gained in the classroom and community. Ron Eisenman will be among 40 educators who will travel to Korea from July 8-July 22. An additional 20 teachers will travel from June 24-July 8. They will begin their visit in Seoul with a formal reception attended by representatives from the Korea Foundation and officials from Yonsei University, who assist the Korea Foundation in coor-

dinating the program. In the following days, the American educators will attend lectures and visit relevant sites to learn about Korean history, economics and culture. The educators will also have the opportunity to meet students and teachers at Goyang Foreign Language High School, where they will learn about the Korean educational system. In addition to their time in Seoul, they will also travel to Gyeongju, the historical capital of Korea, where they will learn more about Korean history and culture. Upon their return, participants are required to submit an impact report detailing how they used this opportunity to benefit their school and community. The Korea Foundation, working in conjunction with Yonsei University, oversees all aspects of the workshop for educators. The Foundation, an independent organization affiliated with the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sponsors the program, for which 2009 marks the fourth year. The Institute of International Education coordinates the recruitment and predeparture activities of the program in the United States. Nearly 300 social studies educators from across the United States have visited Korea through the Korean Studies Workshop. Social studies educators and administrators working in sixth through twelfth grades throughout the United States can apply to take part in one of the two trips to South Korea scheduled for 2010. As guests of the Korea Foundation, the selected educators’ trips are fully-funded. Teachers with social studies components to their curricula, including gifted and special education teachers, and teachers and administrators involved with social studies curriculum development and textbook writing are encouraged to apply. Pool Memberships Available for Hoosick Town Pool

If you are looking for a place to enjoy some warm weather fun, then consider buying a pool membership to the Town of Hoosick’s pool. The Town is offering reduced membership rates until June 15, 2009 for pool membership. The reduced membership rates are as follows: family daytime-$90; family day/night $110; individual daytime-$50; individual day/night membership-$60. The ever-popular morning swim (8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.) for adults is back for $30 for the season, or $1.50 daily. The membership passes may be purchased from Town Clerk Susan Stradinger at the Town Offices, 80 Church Street, Hoosick Falls. Town Councilperson Kevin O’Malley notes that the pool is a great resource for town residents, and will be in operation seven days a week through the summer with pool rates being the same as last year. Town Supervisor Marilyn Douglas said the pool is becoming a popular end-of-the year activity for area schools with St. Mary’s, Hoosick Falls Central, Cambridge Central, and Woodford already scheduled for use. Volunteers Needed for Tour de Paws

Second Chance Animal Center in Shaftsbury, VT, will be holding its Fifth Annual Tour de Paws on Sunday, July 19th, and is looking for volunteers to help make this year’s event a success. Tour de Paws is a bicycling and walking event to promote and raise funds for the animals at Second Chance. The starting point will be the Manchester Recreation Park and will take riders through the rolling hills of Vermont and past beautiful pastures. Volunteers are needed for the day’s event as well as the pre-planning stage. Prior to the event, volunteers are needed to help with publicity and organization. On the day of the event, volunteers are needed to set up the tables, take registrations and man the refreshment and promotion tables. Since riders are given a choice of three levels of rides (63

The Georgi Museum Offers Summer Music Program for Teens

The Georgi in Shushan is offering a LARAC* funded Summer Music Program for teens Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., each day, with a celebratory gathering/concert on the evening of Friday, July 31.The theme will be teaching young musicians how to play together and will be taught by Barry Hyman.This program is open to young musicians who already know how to play an instrument or sing and who want to learn more about how to play with other people: how to run a rehearsal, the music theory that gets everybody in the same key, how to teach new songs to a band, how to balance everybody’s volume, how to arrange the various instruments, how to get a repertoire performance-ready, etc. The Georgi received a grant from the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council which very kindly covers most of the costs, and students will pay only $60 for the week-long program. SVAC’s June Exhibitions Free Opening Reception June 13

SPORTS Fishing Derby at Hapgood Pond

The Manchester Ranger District of the Green Mountain national Forest, in partnership with Trout Unlimited, is hosting its 19th annual Youth Fishing Derby at Hapgood Pond Campground in Peru on Saturday, June 13. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with fishing from 9 to 11 a.m. The festivities will continue until about noon. The derby will be held rain or shine. Our youth fishing day is being held in conjunction with National Fishing Week, and that Saturday is Free Fishing Day in Vermont. Area youth, ages 12 and under, accompanied by an adult, are invited to join in the fun. Contests will be held for longest fish and most fish caught by age group. A visit from Smokey the Bear is anticipated. This year, in conjunction with National Get Outdoors Day, we may also have guests from Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) and the Vermont Bird Place, along with demonstrations on camping and fishing. Donations and volunteer help are being provided by many members of our community. Grab your fishing rod and come to Hapgood Pond to enjoy the sport of fishing in your National Forest. Vermont PGA Works with MEMS Students

The Vermont PGA chapter is committed to proactively growing the game of golf in the state. This year they have partnered with various Vermont schools to add the “first tee” program to the physical education program. The Equinox Resort is taking part by inviting 40 students from the Manchester Elementary and Middle School to take a tour and learn about the game. This is a great chance for students to learn about all aspects of golf, including what the game involves and what type of jobs are available. This is a wonderful (and fun!) opportunity for local students to enjoy the great game of golf on the resort’s beautiful course. SPORTS SVM Fusion Soccer Club Scores in Albany Tournaments and Offers New Fall Select Travel Soccer Program

SVM Fusion Soccer Club, the new club formed by the merger of Mountain and Southern Vermont Soccer Clubs this past year, has had a great start to its outdoor soccer season. Playing a full tournament schedule against the top clubs in the Albany, NY area, SVM Fusion teams have had four first place and six second place results at the Rotterdam, Saratoga, Bethlehem and Guilderland Tournaments, with strong showings from all teams from U10-U17 ages. Most recently, our U17 Boys and U16 Girls White teams scored decisive wins at the Guilderland Memorial Day Tournament along with a strong second place finish by our U12 Girls White team, following up a first place finish at Bethlehem for our U17 Boys and a second place showing for our U14 Girls White teams. Looking ahead, SVM Fusion Soccer is pleased to announce a new Fall Select Travel Program for girls entering seventh and eighth grade this coming school season (U14 age team). This will be a regional select travel program to run during the prime soccer season for players interested in, and ready for, a higher level of play in addition to their existing school program. Players will play against high level teams from across the Northeast. This program is open to players from all communities and clubs in the region. Mountain Biker is Winner

The U.S. Open for Mountain Biking, a premiere event for over 600 international riders was held on May 23 and 24 in Vernon, New Jersey. Luen Proft, an East Dorset resident and student at Burr and Burton Academy, qualified out of a field of 200 in his age bracket on Saturday. He competed against 560 riders on Sunday, hurling himself over rocky ledges and steep inclines. He stepped onto the podium with a fifth place finish. If you see the red head biker cruising around town, slow him down (if possible) and pass on a congratulations to him.

Free Vermont Safe Boating Course

The Lake St. Catherine Association will hold its annual free courses in boating safety twice this season. Each course will be offered in two sessions. Attendance at both sessions is required. The first date will be June 24 and 25, from 4 to 8 p..m., at the Poultney Firehouse off Route 30 in Poultney, VT. The second date will be July 8 and 9, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Wells Village School, Route 30 in Wells, VT. The certified instructor is Frank Callahan. This course complies with the latest requirements of the State of Vermont and a Certificate of Boating Education will be awarded to each attendee who passes a test at completion. The course is open to all boaters, but particularly is for those born after January 1, 1974. All such persons must have a Certificate of Boating Education to operate any motorized vessel including personal water craft (jet skis) in Vermont waters. Pre-registration is required. The development of the Battenkill Valley Creamery and an on-site tour will be the subject of the June 11 program-event presented by the Hebron Preservation Society. ENTERTAINMENT ‘Stuart Little’ at Weston Playhouse

The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company presents its fifth annual production for families, the E. B. White classic “Stuart Little”. Playing from June 23 through July 5 at family friendly times and without charge, the show will be performed on Weston’s Village Green before touring to outdoor locations across the state. Young families and the young-at-heart alike will delight at this imaginative story in which a mild-mannered mouse seeks to survive in a “real people’s world.” Based on White’s 1945 children’s book and popularized over the years by a series of films and television events, “Stuart Little” is a charming 60-minute play about an adventuresome boy who was born as a mouse into an ordinary New York family. All the charm, wisdom and joy of the original story are captured in this adaptation by Joseph Robinette, who also dramatized the highly acclaimed stage version of another White classic, Charlotte’s Web. The various human and animal roles in Stuart Little are played by Weston’s Young Company, a diverse group of performers chosen by audition from the nation’s top undergraduate musical theatre programs. The 2009 Young Company includes Craig Fogel from NYU/CP 21, Katy Karr and Norman Payne from Pace University, Nadine Malouf from Syracuse University, Jenny Powell from the Boston Conservatory and returning from last year, Paul Rawlings from Baldwin-Wallace College. The Young Company will be seen throughout the summer in the popular after-hours Act IV Cabaret and in the Weston MainStage Production of Rent. “‘Stuart Little’ is an endearing and humorous play which Vermont

audiences will love,” said Haefner, who last year directed a production of You Can’t Take it With You at Castleton State College. Free performances of Stuart Little have been scheduled in mornings, afternoons and early evenings at times convenient to families with young children. Reservations are not needed. The series begins on June 21, with acclaimed classical cellist Matt Haimovitz, who alternates appearing with great symphony orchestras, such as the Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco, and surprising new venues, such as coffee houses, clubs, and parks. Summer Night Jazz in Peru

Summer Night Jazz in Peru, presented by the Peru Historical Society, will be held on Saturday, June 13, between 7 and 10 p.m., and features The Daniel Timmermans-Jonathan Myers Jazz Ensemble. Enjoy jazz and popular standards from two horns and rhythm. Trumpeter Daniel Timmermans and trombonist Jonathan Myers first crossed paths in 1988 in Europe. After years of playing together in various contexts, jazz and classical, theater and chamber groups, they went their separate ways. Daniel continued to refine his effortless jazz style in Hawaii while freelancing and teaching there, while Jonathan remained in Germany where he indulged his taste for improvisational music, both jazz and in the contemporary music scene. Fate found them reunited in 2006 in Vermont and their collaboration was back on track, having profited from the seasoning both have enjoyed from opposite sides of the globe. Listeners are drawn to the obvious respect and affinity they have for one another, as well as their mastery of their respective horns. Among other venues, they appear regularly at the PAMDA studio in Peru, Vermont on the first Saturday of every month to the delight of audiences who enjoy the duo’s fresh take on favorite jazz standards.

Film Series Continues in Pawlet

The Pawlet Public Library will air “The Horseman on the Roof ” a French-made period piece on Tuesday, June 9. The plot involves an Italian Officer on the run from assassins in France in the 1800’s. The population has been panicked by a cholera epidemic and the countryside is chaotic.The soldier encounters a young countess searching for her husband. Of course, he ends up helping her adding to his own peril. This chaste romance between an officer of the old school and a faithful wife reputedly was the most expensive film made in France up to that time. The film was released in 1995, runs 119 minutes and is rated R for a nude scene. Internationally nominated for eight awards it won four. It will be aired with closed captions on June 9. At 7:15 p.m., the feature will be preceded by a short film made by V. Roby, nephew of our own Jane Rinck in film school in Paris. As always free punch and popcorn will be provided. Feel free to bring a cushion for the folding chairs.

SVAC Unveils ‘The Design Room,’ with Amy Thebault

The Southern Vermont Arts Center is very pleased to announce the opening of “The Design Room: A Collaboration of Art and Design”, in Yester House Gallery’s Gallery X on June 13. A free opening day reception, in conjunction with the opening of the June Exhibitions, will feature live music, hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and exhibiting artists from 4-6 p.m. Two area interior designers will transform the gallery - Amy Thebault during the summer months, and Lisa Laberge for fall - to celebrate the relationship between the beauty of art and interior design. The paintings decorating the room, all by SVAC artists, as well as the inspired furnishings, fabrics and decorative items provided by the designers, will be for sale. Traditional Japanese Screens and Scrolls at the Clark

Seasonal change and depictions of the natural world have formed a core in the repertoire of Japanese artists throughout the ages. The exhibition Through the Seasons: Japanese Art in Nature at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute brings together screens and scrolls from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries and displays them with contemporary ceramics, each work emphasizing the inspirational role of nature in Japanese art. Drawn from both public institutions and private collections, many of these works have never before been exhibited. Through the Seasons will be on view in Stone Hill Center’s galleries June 7 through October 18. For centuries, the arts of Japan have been inextricably linked with nature, whether through traditional themes of seasonal change or through objects whose shape, materials, or decorative elements evoke natural motifs. The screens and scroll paintings included in Through the Seasons exemplify Edo and Meiji period aesthetics; the ceramics indicate the continuation of traditional styles as well as the employment of natural elements in new ways. Also on view is Dove/O’Keeffe: Circles of Influence. This Clark exclusive exhibition features Georgia O’Keeffe’s early works with those of modernist Arthur Dove, whom she credited as having the most significant role in the formation of her abstract works. Dove/O’Keeffe runs through September 7. The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August).
