READERS’ LETTERS ...stamping out hunger... On behalf of the board of directors and staff of the Community Food Cupboard, I would like to thank our community and the letter carriers of Manchester Center and Dorset who participated in the Annual “Help Stamp Out Hunger” food drive held on May 8. Now in its 18th year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. We are especially thankful to the letter carriers for their dedication to this food drive which has brought thousands of pounds of food to CFC over the years, and for taking on this extra task on a cold rainy Saturday and lengthening their usual route time considerably. We are also truly grateful for each donor who tucked a few cans or packages of food in their mailboxes. Hundreds of families will be helped by these gifts and we thank you for your support. ...Danielle and Mike...

I need to repeat my first letter to the editor from five years ago about two close friends, Danielle and Mike, who would borrow my dog, Christopher, to take on hikes, raise money for the local humane society, and just plain walk. The reason that I wanted to tell this story again is because the News Guide gets phone calls about how to contact me. I believe that I am the only Bentley in Dorset. I am in the local book. We all have a lot of stories to share about them. Christopher and I go visit and I clean the stone as they will always be in my heart. I also want to remember my mom, Cindy K., and Dale Long, as these were also people that were close to me. Someone special and even your pets know how much you love them. They try to reach out and shake a hand or give a hug to that person because you never know if you will get the chance again. Haystack Hustlers in June

Haystack Hustlers will meet at the Pawlet Church June 8, at noon with a Pot Luck Lunch. Marlee Mason from PACE VT/ All Inclusive Elderly Care, will present information on what PACE is and what is available through this program. Don’t forget to bring items for the Pawlet Food Shelf and we will hold our 50/50 raffle. Plans are still open for the summer schedule, so bring your ideas as decisions will need to be made soon. We received a Transportation Grant to use for a bus trip of your choosing, yet to be determined! As school will be out for the summer, our June 22 meeting will be held at the Pawlet Church and start with a Pot Luck meal at noon. Our guest speaker will be noted area author, Ann Rich Duncan. She writes childrens books (which are very historical and educational for adults also!). She will talk about her story character Johnny Vic and his trips back in time, which are tied historically to this area. Spread the word and bring your neighbor to enjoy this exciting program. If you want to come to the program only, you are welcome to come at 1p.m. As at all of our meetings, we will also collect items for the Pawlet Food Shelf and hold our 50/50 raffle. ________________________________________________

The 21st Annual Battenkill Duck Derby and Family Fair will be held Sunday, June 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Arlington Rec. Park on Route 7A in downtown Arlington, Vermont. This annual event is a great summer activity that includes games, bounce houses, food and fun for the whole family. The owner of the first duck to cross the finish line at the Arlington Rec. Pond will receive $1000, donated by Mack Molding. Second place takes home $500 (donated by Battenkill Aquatics, and third place wins $250. Prizes will also be given to the ticket holders of the first 25 ducks to finish. Tickets to purchase a duck for the race will be on sale at various locations throughout Arlington and will also be available at the event. The cost is $4 for 1 duck, $10 for 3 ducks, $15 for 5 ducks or $20 for 7 ducks. The Battenkill Duck Derby and Family Fair is an annual fundraiser hosted by Arlington Area Childcare Inc. Roast Pork Dinner

New Health Services Director at Equinox Terrace

Ann Bouza, RN, brings a wealth of experience to her new job of overseeing and coordinating the health services for Terrace residents. Originally from the United Kingdom, she has worked in large research hospitals in London, and in a visiting nurse service and a rehabilitation facility in this country, among other positions. At her home in Arlington, she and her family look after a large organic garden, chickens and ducks, cats and dogs, and a flourishing colony of bees.

Arlington Academic Awards Announced

Chrissy Anderson Receives Outstanding Community Service Award

Chrissy Anderson is serving as a Vermont Youth Development Corps AmeriCorps State Program member with The Collaborative since 2008, and recently received the 2010 Governor’s Award for Outstanding Community Service. The award recognizes an individual member of a national service program who has demonstrated outstanding volunteer service above and beyond the requirements of the designated program. Chrissy has demonstrated her service as a leader for the Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) chapter at Burr and Burton Academy. She has been able to assist the students in planning substance free events throughout the year. Some of these events include broomball nights at Riley Rink, middle school dances, movie nights, and open game nights. The open game nights take place at the Manchester Parks and Recreation and are held in the summer months. In addition to the events the BBA SADD Chapter raises money through tag sales and car washes. Due to these fundraising efforts the SADD group has raised enough money to go the SADD national conference in Florida. Chrissy will accompany a group of five students. Chrissy also has been able to enhance The Collaborative’s mentoring program by recruiting mentors for communities that did not have any. The mentoring program enrollment has increased and expanded. More schools were brought into The Collaborative’s mentor program and now students have access to mentors and mentoring programs.

Salem Central School Announces Top Ten Graduates Class of 2010

The Class of 2010 valedictorian is Jennifer Steller. Jennifer is the daughter of John and Annie Steller of Salem, New York. Jennifer has been a member of the Literary Magazine staff, yearbook staff (serving as co-editor), National Honor Society (serving as secretary and treasurer), Spanish club, drama club and school plays. Jennifer has also participated in All County Chorus and NYSSMA solos. She has been a Peerworx tutor and a mentor. She has put in many hours of service learning. She is the recipient of a George Eastman Young Leaders Award, President’s Education Award and was a QuestBridge National College Match Finalist. Jennifer has been accepted into the honors program at Siena College where she will attend in the fall. Caleb Batchelder has been named this year’s salutatorian. Caleb is the son of Terry and Erica Batchelder of Argyle, New York. Caleb has received the President’s Education Award and he has participated in the jazz band at Salem. Caleb has also received the ACC Foreign Language Award of Academic Excellence for his participation in French and Chinese classes at ACC. He has been a translator for Spanish speaking migrant families in Washington County. Caleb has gone to Mexico and to the Dominican Republic to take part in missionary work. One of Caleb’s favorite hobbies is bicycle racing. He attended a 10-day program at the Chris Carmichael Training School in Tuscon, Arizona in February of this year. This summer, Caleb is planning to attend the Barnett Bicycle Institute in Colorado Springs, for a 6-week program on bike building and racing. Caleb is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and was awarded an Academic Excellence scholarship from ACC. Caleb will be deferring his college acceptances until the fall of 2011. Dennis Budde holds the number three rank in this year’s graduating class. Dennis is the son of Al and Nancy Budde of Shushan, NY. Dennis has been a member of the drama club, serving as vice president. He has also been a participant in band and chorus all through high school. He was on the soccer team and is a member of the National Honor Society. Dennis has been selected as a Rotary Club Youth Exchange Ambassador. He will travel to Romania where he will spend a year as

an exchange student. Upon the completion of his year abroad, Dennis will attend Rice University where he will study linguistics. Patrick Wilson will graduate fourth in his class. Patrick is the son of Tom and Lisa Wilson of W. Rupert, Vermont. Patrick is a member of the National Honor Society, math team and chorus. He has been on the yearbook staff, a member of students against destructive decisions and 4-H. Patrick has received the President’s Education Award. He has participated in football, wrestling and track. Patrick was chosen as the 2010 Chronicle student athlete of the week. He was also named as the 2009 all star punter class D-section II and the all star kicker for class Dsection II in 2008. Patrick has been accepted at Norwich University and will study civil engineering. Aaron Butler has earned the fifth rank in the class of 2010. Aaron is the son of Richard and Tammy Butler of Salem, New York. Aaron has been extremely involved in the music program at Salem Central and also in the community. He has participated in New York conference all-state chorus and the New York State band director’s association honors band. Aaron has been a member of the soccer team at Salem and was chosen as an Adirondack League soccer allstar. Aaron was also a member of the math team. After graduation, Aaron will study songwriting at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. David Montgomery has earned the number six rank. David is the son of Steve and Jan Montgomery of Salem. David has been very involved in FFA. He has taken part in the parliamentary procedure. He has participated in soccer, jazz band, senior band and 4-H. David has served as a class officer. David has been a member of the math team and youth fellowship. He was the American Legion Boys’ State representative and he received the Who’s Who in Agriculture Award, the President’s Education Award as well as the University of Rochester Bausch & Lomb Science Award. David will study engineering at Clarkson University in the fall. Kevin Bardin will complete his senior year ranked seventh in the class. Kevin is the son of Steve and Judy Bardin of Salem. Kevin has been a member of the soccer and wrestling teams at Salem. He has participated in the

Take Off With Books at MEMS

Families with infants and toddlers age 4 and under are invited to come to Manchester Elementary and Middle School on Monday, June 7 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. for a fun — and totally free — summer reading event, Take Off With Books! Join us first for fresh-baked pizza, prepared by the MEMS cafeteria staff; at 6:15, come to the Media Center for story time, crafts, and balloon animals. Free Literacy Tote Bags, filled with books, crayons, markers, puzzles, and more will be available to take home. This event is funded by Burr and Burton Academy, with support from Beth McCoy. Literacy-rich events like this, modeling behaviors in a fun, social setting, with songs, stories, and activities to strengthen fine-motor skills, are sponsored by the Friends Foundation for MEMS, thanks to donations received last year for the school’s Early Literacy Outreach program. Kyle has been a member of the National Honor Society and volunteered as a Salem youth wrestling coach. Kyle will be attending Ithaca College where he will study physical therapy. Robert Johnson has finished high school with a class rank of 10. Robert is the son Robert Johnson, II of Waterford, New York and Andree Johnson of Salem. Robert has been a member of the varsity baseball team and the Salem fitness club. Robert has been awarded an Academic Excellence Award at ACC where he will study to be an athletic trainer.

FROM MY CORNER — by Susan J. Coons ...aahhhh.... My husband, children and I went camping throughout the time he was alive.We went outdoor tenting at least a dozen times a year when we lived in Pasadena, California. We would go to the Leo Carillo Beach campground; camp in the mountains behind Mount Wilson; camp in Death Valley; on the beaches at San Louis Obispo; Yosemite National Forest; San Diego...I can’t list them all because they’re too numerous. Although we lived in a quiet neighborhood, it was wonderful to get away and spend evenings sleeping under the towering pines listening to a gentle breeze whisper through the boughs. It wasn’t until about 1980 that the campgrounds became a gathering place for gangs from the inner city of Los Angeles. We would set up camp on a Thursday so we could enjoy the peace and magnitude of the great outdoors before city gangs came in on Saturday evening with their boom boxes, firecrackers and guns. Yes, guns. They weren’t allowed in the park but once in a while one would be shot off into the night sky by some drunken idiot. Fortunately, no one was ever hurt. I no longer go camping in the great outdoors since my husband died, but I still enjoy the peace of listening to birds in the morning as I watch the day begin. I feel connected with earth and sky, and use the fleeting morning moments for contemplation and meditation. Once in a while I need this kind of connection after work. Especially if I’ve had a difficult day. Last Tuesday was one of those days with the pressure of the possibility of a large paper (104 pages in the VNG). And I didn’t get home until after 6 because I had errands to run after work. It was hot and a little muggy. I greeted Jill (who has become a wonderful friend), donned my summer “uniform” (my bathing suit), checked the mail, grabbed the phone, my magazine, fixed a drink, and headed for the pool. Aaahhhhh...the water was wonderful. Jill splashed around a bit and then we both got out, Jill to run around the yard and I to lie back on the lounge chair in the peace of the evening. What! What was that? Oh, right, I forgot where I was for just a moment. That was the roar of a truck that sounds like a Lebanon Valley dual racing engine without mufflers. At the same time, from the other direction was a neighbor running an electric saw as if this ‘drownout’ had been planned. The truck only passed by once, but the saw ran for 20 minutes! The good thing about “noise pollution” is that it sounds so good when it stops!

On Wednesday, June 19, Long Trail School hosted a lunch for recipients of the proceeds from Empty Bowls. Karen Allen of the Summer Lunch Program, Susan Fox from Meals on Wheels, Bob Carpenter, president of the Interfaith Council and Martha Carey from the Community Food Cupboard joined LTS student ambassadors and Empty Bowls committee members for a light lunch before receiving the donations. Each of the three charities was given $3,500 as their share of profits from the community dinner. _____________________

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Daniel P. Barbiero has deployed to the U.S. Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to serve as a member of Joint Task Force-GTMO. Servicemembers from all branches of the U.S. armed forces are involved in a joint-military operation whose mission is to conduct safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detained enemy combatants.

Barbiero is an aviation boatswains mate handling assigned to the Navy Expeditionary Guard Battalion. The petty officer will be serving on the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan Aircraft Carrier. He has served in the military for nine years. He is the son of Anthony W. and June M. Barbiero of Partridge Road, Pownal, Vermont. Burr and Burton Academy’s 2010 Rowland Faculty Chair Awards Presented to Neil Freebern and Cliff Hay Burr and Burton Academy faculty members Neil Freebern and Cliff Hay received the fourth annual Rowland Endowed Faculty Chair Awards from Wendy and Barry Rowland during a special meeting at the school recently. Freebern is chair of the Performing Arts Department, and in addition to teaching music courses himself oversees the drama, dance and extracurricular performing arts programs. He has been working with students since receiving his BA and MA in music education from the University of Massachusetts. Following his arrival at Burr and Burton in 2003, Freebern introduced several new courses and provided students with enhanced opportunities for performance. He has received numerous awards, most recently the Yale Distinguished Educator Award in 2007. Hay has been teaching wood shop at Burr and Burton since 1996. In addition to teaching his students the skills necessary to make wood furniture, he joins them in building sheds, tables and chairs for Habitat for Humanity. Hay was also on the school’s exploratory committee for the Hurricane Katrina clean-up efforts and twice led Burr and Burton student volunteers to Slidell, Louisiana, where they worked with residents to clear the damage. His students regularly produce practical as well as beautiful pieces for their families. The faculty chairs are awarded every year to acknowledge and honor teachers who are accomplished in their field, and who inspire students and their peers. In addition to funding a teacher’s salary, the endowed positions include a professional development award that will permit the instructor to upgrade course materials, attend conferences, travel or pursue other academic enrichment activities. Spanish teacher Chris Nolan and Librarian Merlyn Miller received Rowland Sabbatical Awards. These are given annually to provide teachers with the opportunity to continue their education, conduct research, experience other cultures through travel or pursue projects that will directly relate to their field of teaching at Burr and Burton. “We feel very strongly that the future of Burr and Burton depends on attracting and retaining highly qualified and engaged faculty members,” said Mr. Rowland. “By recognizing and rewarding excellent teachers every year we hope to make Burr and Burton an even more attractive place to teach and to continue learning.” Learning Specialist Mary Diaz received the Jonathan Bigelow Fund Award for Excellence and Dean of Faculty John Wright, who is retiring this year, received the Ormsby Hill Trust Fund grant. Choose a Neutral Fabric for Your Sofa, and NO That is Not the Boring Choice! The choice you make in a sofa is a crucial one because it is usually the piece of furniture that a living room is built around. Taking the time to contemplate a few key aspects in the selection process is well worth your while. You can express the style of the room, whether it is traditional, country/cottage, contemporary, transitional or eclectic, by carefully choosing a shape that reflects that particular style. The next important decision will be the fabric choice. I have learned, after many years of designing living rooms for clients, to strongly suggest choosing a neutral fabric, usually a solid with texture, as the basic fabric. Then you can build out from there in any direction stylistically with pillows. The pillow fabric is where you

can get personal and creative while adding color and pattern. Add a colorful throw for another shot of color and texture. It is simple and fun and takes the doubt out of the decision making process. This topic is a bit personal for me. Confession time. I once selected fabric for a sofa, it still pains me to admit this, with a fruit pattern on a black background. Sounds scary? Well it was. It actually turned out to be a bit of a family inside joke, with many family members and friends clocking how many hours they spent on “The Fruit Couch” as it was affectionately called, as it was also a pull-out sleeper sofa. Hopefully this illustrates the problem with not selecting a neutral fabric - I had to live with that choice for many years before finally coming up with a good enough excuse to bring it to the local thrift - thankfully my husband and I were purchasing a pellet stove and needed the room. Usually a sofa lives with you for at least 10 years or more. Your neutral sofa can be your base. You can change the look of the room with the seasons or the changing style of a decade by simply replacing your patterned pillows or wall color as the spirit moves you. It widens the choices and the possibilities are endless. If I have saved just one homeowner from making a big mistake I will have done my job. Interfaith Council’s Summer Children’s Lunch Program

Food and Fund Drive to benefit the Interfaith Council’s Summer Children’s Lunch Program. This program services about 150 children from Manchester and surrounding towns for 9-10 weeks. Mountain Healing Arts and the Rotary Club will be joining forces to collect nonperishable foods and funds for this program. You may make a food or fund drop at the following locations: Northshire Bookstore, Chittenden Bank (Bennington), Mountain Healing Arts, Eastern Mountain Sports. The drive will run through June 15. Examples of some good foods needed for this program would be canned chicken, tuna, soups and fruit, peanut butter and jelly, granola bars, etcetera. Supplies necessary include toothbrushes and school supplies such as pencils, paper, notebooks, and etcetera. Grace Cottage Hospital is offering a six-week “Relaxed Living” workshop, June 7 to July 12, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., in the hospital’s Community Wellness Center. It’s free! Naturopathic Doctor Ani Hawkinson, medical director of the HeartSong Health in Community Clinic in Putney, will lead this sixweek workshop. Participants will learn different techniques for inducing states of relaxation as tools to optimize health. This experiential program provides participants with practical knowledge about how to use mind-body practices to improve their responses to real and perceived stressors in their daily lives, and to give them skills necessary to engage in these relaxation activities on their own. Drawn from the ancient natural medicine of India, called Ayurveda, and Yoga, Ayurveda’s sister science of mind-body integration, the course is designed for people of all ages and abilities, regardless of prior experience with mind-body medicine. Instruction will be individualized according to the needs and capabilities of attendees. Participants are asked to wear loose clothing and to bring a towel or small blanket to class. Cliff Drysdale Tennis will be expanding operations in the Southern Vermont area this year to include a division of their extremely popular Junior Tennis Camp at the Manchester Park and Recreation. Celebrate National Trails Day and Take a Hike! Saturday, June 5, is National Trails Day, 2010. In recognition, The Friends of the West River Trail are hosting an open house at the South Londonderry Depot, on Route 100, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities will include a free bicycle inspection and tune up, complimentary ice cream from the Walpole Creamery, tours of the restored depot and, of course, hiking and bicycling on the beautiful West River Trail. Maps of the trail are available at the depot. The Trail follows, as closely as possible, the roadbed of the longabandoned West River Railroad, which served the valley from its opening in 1879 until service ceased in the mid-1930s, the result of major competition from new highways and major damage from a hurricane. The roadbed adhered closely to the river and affords fine views of the pastoral stream and the steep hills that rise from its banks. Being a former roadbed, the Trail is generally flat and offers an easy and relaxing walk. Portions are handicapped-accessible. It is the goal of The Friends of the West River Trail (FWRT) to convert the entire 36 mile route of the railroad, which ran from Brattleboro to South Londonderry, into a viable recreation facility. Today, 16 miles along the upper section of this valley route provide a safe and scenic alternative to Route 30 for hikers, walkers, skiers and bikers, linking

the villages of South Londonderry, Jamaica and Townshend with 4,500 acres of unspoiled public land. The depot itself was constructed in the 1870s. FWRT purchased the structure in 2000 in derelict condition with a Vermont Agency of Transportation enhancement grant. Work performed since then has led to the restoration of the Depot’s exterior to its appearance in the 1930s and the rehabilitation of its interior space for exhibitions and public gatherings. The Depot will serve as a Visitor Center and trailhead facility for the West River Trail and a historical museum for West River Railroad memorabilia. Currently in its final phases of fundraising and construction, the project is scheduled to be completed this year. So come to the depot on June 5 and join the Friends in celebrating National Trails Day; explore the beautiful West River Trail, and when you have walked enough to deserve a reward, treat yourself to some delicious Walpole Creamery ice cream. If you have brought your bicycle, be sure to have it examined and tuned up for the busy season ahead by the professional staff of Mountain Riders. Dorset Library to Feature Work of Dave and Patty Herzfeld On Saturday, June 5, the Dorset Public Library will host a coffee reception from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for local residents to meet the featured artists of the month, Dave and Patty Herzfeld. Dave is an extremely versatile artist a well as a custom cabinetmaker, furniture maker, and sign carver. As an oil painter, he has exhibited at the Southern Vermont Art Center in Ma n c h e s t e r, Vermont. His oil paintings have been licensed nationally to companies such as White Mountain Puzzles, Wincraft Thirstystone, Tree Free and more. Some of his work is in the Vermont State House. Commissioned oil paintings as well as mural work are available, along with references upon request. His furniture has been featured in Vermont Magazine, Log Homes magazine, and The New York Times. He

does kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, entertainment systems, and store fixtures in native hardwoods or painted finishes. Dave is represented by the Gallery on the Green in Woodstock and the John Zaccheo Gallery in Manchester. Dave’s wife, Patty, creates beautiful high fired stoneware, including custom dinnerware sets, nesting sets, and handthrown vessel sinks, the latter in collaboration with her husband. All sinks are housed with a drain fitting and inscribed upon request. She is often commissioned for personalized wares such as wedding bowls and platters and memorial pieces. Patty is a member of the Vermont Craft Council and Vermont Hand Crafters. More of their work may be seen at Herzfeld Studio and Gallery, located on Historic Route 7A in

Shaftsbury, Vermont. The reception to meet the artists on June 5 is free and open to the public, and the show will continue through the month of June. All works on display are for

Marble Valley Players to Present ‘Guys and Dolls’

The Marble Valley Players are pleased to announce the cast of “Guys and Dolls”. This “musical fable of Broadway” will be presented at Rutland’s historic Paramount Theatre July 16-18. The play centers on two couples with tumultuous relationships. High-stakes gambler, Sky Masterson (Leif Erickson), who tries to entice stern missionary Sarah Brown (Nikki Juvan) to go with him to Havana so he can win a bet. Kim Moyer is cast in the role of nightclub dancer, Miss Adelaide, who attempts to get her fiance of 14 years, craps game organizer Nathan Detroit (Martin Bones), to finally tie the knot. They are joined by a large and talented cast of actors, singers, and dancers. Director Bobbie Torstenson is still looking for actors (men and women) for the first scene which features street characters on 1950s Broadway such as tourists, bobbie soxers, shoppers, hoods and hookers, etc. This is a choreographed ensemble scene... cameo roles with no lines.
