OUR READERS’ LETTERS ...remembering...

The first week in June, I write about remembering Danielle and Mike. I’m not sure if this will be my last letter or not, but time will tell. I know that this year another milestone has happened in my life. Christopher (who Danielle and Mike loved) is now 15 years old.I truly have been blessed. I still go weekly to clean the stone and say the Lord’s Prayer. I do hear from many people who read what I write about them and they thank me so much for remembering them because it is uplifting. Danielle’s dad wrote me a letter and thanked me for remembering them. I sent him a copy of the picture that is on the back of my blazder and thanked him for the letter that brought tears to my eyes. I want them to always be remembered. In closing, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to mary and family as well as Eugene and Gloria Lauzon family to have known these two very special people. Danielle and Mike had a love and passion for animals like I do. Take care and

...Marshall...

Your tribute to Marshall Peck stirred up memories of the time that I worked for him. I originally wrote a little piece about having two young people build my dog fence behind my house in Manchester Village and I took a picture of them and handed it in to Marshall. I mentioned that I’d written the golf news in the New Rochelle Standard Star when I was a member of the Pelham Country Club. Next thing I knew, I was covering all the golf clubs in the area except one which thought publicity was tacky. I wrote up the Manchester Country Club when I was a member, as well as the Equinox, which was then a public course. Joan Rizio was a member there and she would bring me the winners to combine with Equinox and Stratton. I remember how Marshall used to rush out to greet every

passerby, no matter how busy he was. I remember the long table piled with old issues of the News Guide. And Huguette quietly and efficiently clipping and pasting and generally bringing order out of mayhem. Huguette had lots of war stories to tell in her French accent. Headmaster Mark Tashjian, I urge you to lock all doors! Close all windows! Block all exits to prevent any member of the incredibly talented cast of “A Chorus Line” to escape unless they promise to perform nightly between now and graduation, foregoing the need of any final exams. The Saturday, May 23, performance lifted the audience out of their seats clamoring for more, more, and more! I cannot find enough non-cliche words to describe their performances. Of course exciting, professional, touching, stimulating, arousing, mind boggling, yes all of those and far more help describe the best high school presentation I have ever experienced. It’s uplifting and reassuring to know we have such wonderful young women and men amongst us. The future looks brighter because of their presence. Kudos also to Jim Raposa, Fran Marino, Neil Freeburn, musicians, and stage hands for affording us performances worthy of Broadway. — Hal DeBona, Manchester, Vt.

Summer Reading Program

This Saturday, June 6, in support of their upcoming Summer Reading Program “Be Creative at your Library”, The Mark Skinner Library will kick off their Gift Basket Raffle with a morning of fun for all children and their families. As this year’s Summer Reading slogan suggests, your public library is the place to be creative and let your imagination soar. From 10 a.m. to noon, come and try your hand at some craft activities, read some stories and buy some raffle tickets! Our 50 gift baskets are each based on the theme of a different children’s book. For example, there is the Eat Your Peas Louise basket that is filled with a variety of vegetable gardening goodies; the Mudball basket features a baseball theme while One Morning in Maine focuses on breakfast. The baskets can be enjoyed by young and old alike and all raffle ticket sales will go toward supporting the 2009 Summer Reading Program. Plant, Book and Bake Sale in Londonderry

Save the date, Saturday June 6 to support your local library by buying beautiful flowering plants, books galore or scrumptious edibles. This annual fundraiser will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the library’s porch, gardens, and inside the library, your wonderful “House of Books.” Again this year we are requesting that if any gardeners out there are dividing perennials or have too much of anything taking over your garden including herbs or vegetables, we invite you to share your surplus with the library. Anyone wishing to donate any plants can leave them on the library porch the week of June 1. Please indicate the name of the plant and whether it likes sun or shade. Any bakers who would like to make a cake, pie, cookies or brownies for resale would be most welcome. Donations are being accepted now. The library is located at 15 Old School Street, just off Main Street and Thompsonburg Road. Call 824-3371 for more information.

Peru Community Dinner

The next Peru Community Dinner will be on Wednesday June 10th at noon at the Town Center. The menu includes Wallingford ham served with scalloped potatoes, asparagus, and jello salad. Strawberry shortcake topped with whipped cream will be served for dessert. We will be playing a few games of BINGO after the meal as a fund raiser for the Peru Emergency Needs Fund. Meditation Class

There will be a meditation class and lecture at 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, at Manchester Acupuncture and Herbs, 2434 Depot St. in Manchester. Facilitator Rich Marantz will instruct participants in the theory and technique of meditation to awaken the voice of peace within the individual. This will be followed by a group silent meditation. No previous meditation experience is necessary to attend this class. Please bring a cushion and notebook, chairs will be provided for those who need them. A free-will donation will be accepted. Green Mountain Seniors

The Green Mountain Seniors’ trip to Burlington was a fun trip. The day was beautiful and we arrived there in time for lunch. After a delicious meal at the Ponderosa, we headed for the Christmas Tree Shop. That was a great time. There are so many items in there that it is hard to see everything. We did, fortunately, have room in the cars and van for all of our purchases, including the plants! On Monday, May 25, we held a pot-luck lunch at the Senior Room in the MWA Annex. We had quite a variety of dishes and, of course, more than enough for everyone. The best thing about pot luck is that everyone makes their best dish! We have decided that we are going to have to do that more often. We played Bingo following the meal. It was a nice, relaxing afternoon with friends. On Tuesday, June 9, we have a bus trip planned to Walmart in Ticonderoga, with a stop for lunch, of course. The charge for the bus is $1.50. There is a sign-up sheet at the Senior Rooms, or you can call Dot Plisko at 645-0219 for further information or to make a reservation. Remember, our regular monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, June 3, at 12:30 p.m., at the MWA Annex Building.

Northshire Nonproﬁt Network Meeting

The Northshire Nonprofit Network will be meeting on Friday, June 5, 8 a.m., at the The Collaborative office, located at 3757 Richville Road (corner of Richville Road and Route 11, next to Earth & Sea FishMarket), Manchester Center, Vermont. The topic is “Communicating within Your Organization: Assessing the Infrastructure and Using Technology.” The guest speaker is Trish Rick who is a founding member and Administrative Director of North Common Associates. Prior to founding North Common Associates, Trish devoted more than 20 years working with nonprofit organizations providing management and direction in support of fundraising, student services, and administrative information systems. She is a current member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), AFPNNE, AFP of Massachusetts and the Association of Advancement Services Professionals (AASP). Ms. Rick is also the founder of the Central Vermont Raiser’s Edge Users Group. This meeting is free and open to staff, board members, and volunteers from all nonprofit organizations in the region, as well as other interested people. Refreshments will be served. The meeting generally ends around 9:15 a.m., or so. During these tough economic times, there is an all-too-thin margin between success and failure. Many good businesses have been caught up in the recession and have had to close their doors. We at the Vermont News Guide and TriState Pennysaver News do not wish to sit idly by and wait for things to get better. We want to be an active part of a solution for the communities we serve. It is in this spirit of community activism that we propose the “Five to Revive” campaign. This campaign, with everyone’s participation, will help consumers save money and motivate people to get out, start shopping and revive local business! The campaign revolves around the “V” symbol, based on the Roman numeral five. It also symbolizes the moment the economy stops its decline and the recovery process begins. Crafters Wanted!

The $1,000, $500 and $250 DUCKS!

The 20th Annual Battenkill Duck Derby and Family Fair will be held Saturday, June 6th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Arlington Rec. Park on Route 7A in downtown Arlington, Vermont. This annual event is a great summer activity that includes games, bounce houses, pony rides, food and fun for the whole family. The owner of the first duck to cross the finish line at the Arlington Rec. Pond will receive $1000, generously donated by Mack Molding. Second place takes home $500 and third place wins $250. Prizes will also be given to the ticket holders of the first 25 ducks to finish. Tickets to purchase a duck for the race will be on sale at various locations throughout Arlington and will also be available at the event. The cost is $4 for 1 duck, $10 for 3 ducks, $15 for 5 ducks or $20 for 7 ducks. The Battenkill Duck Derby and Family Fair is an annual fundraiser hosted by Arlington Area Childcare Inc. Beard-off!

The National Honor Society at Burr and Burton is running a “Beardoff ” in order to raise money for Heifer International. Heifer International is an organization that focuses on helping needy towns and villages in over 50 countries around the world. One part of the organization allows donors to send livestock to families in need, offering these people a selfrenewing, sustainable resource of sorts. The National Honor Society is interested in this aspect of Heifer International. The money has been raised largely through the fundraiser known as the “Beard-off.” Three teachers — Mr. Kockenour, Mr. Deforest, and Mr. Hay — have put their beards on the line for this worthy cause. The teacher with the most money donated to his name will have a shaving in front of the school. No participant will shave, though, until a total of $1,000 has been raised. With only three weeks left of school, please help the Burr and Burton NHS by donating money to their fundraiser to benefit the Heifer Foundation. Welcome, Camron!

Camron Lucas Colvin was born onApril 24, 2009, at 5:07 p.m., to the proud parents, Matthew and Laura Lynn Colvin, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, New York. He weighed 9 lbs, 5 oz., and was 20 inches in height. Camron has an older brother Christian Jacob and the grandparents of this beautiful boy are Peggy and David Shores and Mary and Wally Colvin. The baby was named after his Aunt Carman Hackman, using a similar spelling and carries his uncle Lucas Shore’s middle name. Both Carman and Lucas are his Godparents. ________________________________________________

Many high school seniors will have a party to celebrate their graduation. Devin Johnson will celebrate his graduation from Burr & Burton Academy with an evening of song and tap dancing on Saturday, June 13th at the West Mountain Inn in Arlington, Vermont. All proceeds from An Evening with Devin Johnson & Friends will go to Bennington County Meals on Wheels. Devin began tapping at age five and has studied tap, ballet, modern and jazz dance most of his life. He has been a tap soloist at the New York City Tap Festival, the DUMBO Festival in Brooklyn, NY, the National Museum of Dance, and at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. Bennington County Meals on Wheels delivers over 60,000 meals to elderly and handicapped persons throughout Bennington County each year. Hot meals are delivered every weekday along with frozen meals for weekends. Meals on Wheels also serves congregate meals weekdays at the Senior Center in Bennington and twice a week at the Town Hall in Manchester, Bailey Hall in Arlington and at sites in Pownal, Shaftsbury and Stamford. The organization receives partial funding from the Southwestern Council on Aging and The Vermont Council on Independent Living. Meals on Wheels has twelve paid employees and twenty-three volunteers who cook, serve and deliver meals. An Evening with Devin Johnson & Friends will include jazz, Broadway and classic rock music performed by a band led by local pianist Linda Hueckel. After the performance a DJ will provide music for dancing. The West Mountain Inn has graciously donated their beautiful barn for the occasion. Hors d’oeuvres and desserts will be served and a cash bar available. Doors will open at 7 p.m., for the 7:30 p.m., performance. The cost is $25 for adults and $10 for students. Rupert Historical Society Summer Program Begins

The Rupert Historical Society invites all to their first program of the summer season on Thursday, June 11 at 7 p.m. Mary Lou Willits, Executive Director of the Slate Valley Museum, will present an awardwinning program, “Heavy Lifting: a Human and Technological History of Moving Slate From Quarry to Market, 1850 to Present”. The lecture and multi-media presentation features voices of quarrymen, past and present, and historical sound and video recordings of heavy lifting technology from human and horsepower to steam and deisel power. The regular meeting of the Rupert Leisures will be held at noon in the Rupert Firehouse on Wednesday, June 10. The menu will include oven-roasted chicken with everyone’s favorite side dishes. This is the month for Flag Day and Father’s Day. With these themes in mind, our volunteer dessert makers will certainly show off some of their most patriotic and tasty treats. July is our annual picnic theme, so summer fun is on the menu. August brings Old Home Day and no official meeting because so many are involved in the preparations for this big day. The theme this year is “Rupert at Work and Play”. The float committee will welcome any suggestions for the design and construction of the float. Behind the Line for 45 Years

On June 2, 2009, Pierre Labeau, Chef at Johnny Seesaw’s will celebrate an incredible milestone; cooking professionally for 45 years. To put that in perspective, when Pierre began cooking, the President of the United States was Lyndon Johnson, man was 5 years away from standing on the moon, and most televisions were black and white. Born in Morocco, to French National parents, Pierre moved to Paris in 1963 and became an apprentice cook in a restaurant which featured a coal stove. After learning, among other skills, to butcher meat, he spent 5 years further honing his craft and passed the National Culinary Exam in 1968. In 1969, Pierre opened his own restaurant, The Garden Palace, in Andorra, which he ran successfully until 1974 when he immigrated to the United States and worked seasonally in Vermont and the Hamptons on Long Island, New York. Pierre eventually settled in Vermont permanently, married the former Bettina Pearson and has one daughter, Elizabeth. He has been the Chef at the Red Fox Inn and the Kandahar restaurant until finally settling in at Johnny Seesaw’s in 1991. Pierre is locally famous for his magnificent soups, sauces, salad dressings and his Pork Roulade, Chicken Vermonter and Veal Chop Normandy. If you’ve never experienced his culinary skills, you are missing a delight, which has been 45 years in the making, and still simmering.

Brick Box at the Paramount

The Brick Box at the Paramount is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibit of paintings by Charles Parness on Friday, June 12, 2009. Parness’ work has evolved into two forms, 20 inch square self-portraits and larger narrative works. Parness is the subject of all his paintings as he explores his humorous relation to the universe. Rotary Club Announces Scholars Receiving Rotary’s Award for Excellence

Stephanie Riker and Anna Wright, both graduating from Burr and Burton this year, are winners of Rotary’s coveted Award for Excellence. This prize grants each recipient $1,000 during each year of undergraduate work for as much as four years. Stephanie Riker will attend Lehigh this fall to pursue a degree in Architecture. Anna Wright will attend UVM to major in psychology. Her goal is to practice as a clinical psychologist. The career goals for both young women will require work on the graduate level well beyond their BA or BS. Stephanie and Annie join other Rotary Scholars currently pursuing their degrees. Kelsey Milne of Bondville, studying Spanish and Education, attends Keene State. Monica Beers of Manchester, majoring in Conservation and Environmental Studies, attends UVM. Marlee Malone of Manchester, concentrating in Diet and Nutrition, attends UVM. Bill Zakrzewski of Arlington, Mechanical and Electromechanical Engineering student, attends Vermont Tech. Heidi Beers of Manchester, earning her BS degree in Dairy Farm Management and Technology, attended Vermont Tech and is now matriculated at UVM. Manchester’s Rotary Club received twenty applicants this year, all deserving of this award. The Award Committee interviewed each applicant who met the request deadline and were hard pressed to select the winners from among so many outstanding candidates. Consideration for the Award is not based merely on academic excellence or financial need. Demonstrated committment to community service and good character are major factors in reaching the award decision. The Award for Excellence competition is open to students from the towns served by the Rotary Club of Manchester and to students who attend the three area secondary schools: BBA, Arlington Memorial, �� and Long Trail. �� _____________________

Local Physical Therapist Receives Doctorate

John M. DiBlasio was recently awarded a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree from Temple University in Philadelphia with the Spring 2009 graduating class. Dr. DiBlasio also holds Master of Physical Therapy and Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology degrees from Temple University. The doctoral program included additional coursework in radiology & pharmacology, clinical decision making, research methods, differential diagnosis, as well as the publishing of original research. When asked why he opted to continue his education, DiBlasio replied, “I felt I needed to hone my diagnostic skills to more quickly identify serious conditions that may require medical attention. I feel I can now more effectively communicate with the patient and their physician to deliver better care. Also, being able to critically review and create research keeps me at the cutting edge of my field and enables me to choose the most effective, evidence-based treatment options for each patient.“ DiBlasio is the owner and primary physical therapist for Prospect Rehabilitation, a Manchester-based physical therapy practice.

This annual service is in remembrance and celebration of the lives of people who have died in the past year. Losing someone you care for is never easy. There is a small, flowering tree of hope planted in a secluded alcove behind SVMC. Celebrate National Trails Day June 6 in the Equinox Preserve

The Equinox Preservation Trust board of directors invites the public to join in celebrating National Trails Day, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Equinox Preserve in Manchester Village. In addition to enjoying over 11 miles of marked and maintained woodland trails, the EPT board is organizing a series of educational programs that day to celebrate the importance of local land conservation. The preliminary schedule for National Trails Day events in the Equinox Preserve include: 10-11:30 a.m., wildflower and bird walk with VINS naturalist and The Bird Place representative; noon-1 p.m., forest management and invasive species walk with Alan Calfee of Calfee Woodland Management. Learn how the Equinox Preservation Trust has taken bold, proactive actions to restore the native ecosystems on their lands by controlling invasive plants. 1-2:30 p.m., Leave No Trace Awareness workshop with VINS director Rick LaDue. Learn the appropriate ways to enjoy the great outdoors while leaving minimal human impact on the landscape. Open House at SCAC

Come one, come all! Second Chance Animal Center, located on Route 7A in Shaftsbury, VT, is holding its annual open house on Saturday, June 6, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Take a tour of the shelter, get to see some of the wonderful animals that are available for adoption, meet old friends and make new ones, find out about volunteer opportunities, and enjoy free refreshments. If you have never visited Second Chance, now is your opportunity. Some people are afraid to visit a shelter because they think they will be overwhelmed by sadness. But Second Chance is light and bright and the animals are well cared for. Most important, however, is that Second Chance is a no-kill shelter. Animals are given an open-ended stay until they are adopted. Second Chance never euthanizes an animal to make space for new arrivals. The Wedding Class is Classic Country, and will be held in the parlor. The Graduation Class will be held in the library. The horticulture division theme is Spring Into Summer and will be held in the loft and include container grown plants and cut specimens. They are Taimi Passaro, Gloria Llewelyn, Arlene Baer, Katherine Buchmayr and Betsy Cochran, along with a popular vote for each class, there will be a silent auction for the poster art, which are the original paintings.
