OUR READERS’ LETTERS ...cvps apology...

On behalf of Central Vermont Public Service, I am writing to apologize for our careless and insensitive conduct recently reported in connection with a proposed low-income subsidy program for electricity customers. Our general counsel, Dale Rocheleau, joins me in issuing this apology. The news article said we opposed the program because we thought customers would use the money to buy cigarettes. This is not our position, and we did not make that claim. We did, however, engage in a round of legalistic debate from which such a conclusion might be made. We are very sorry we went down that road. It was a mistake that in no way reflects our position, or our respect for customers, especially to those facing hardships in paying their bills. In the context of filing a series of

probing questions to other attorneys in the “discovery” phase of this investigation, a CVPS attorney pursued a line of questioning that was insensitive and unnecessary. It was an error in judgment and we apologize on behalf of CVPS and our employees. We have formally withdrawn those questions, and have addressed the matter directly with the attorney involved. We do not oppose the establishment of a subsidy program to assist our lowest-income customers in paying their bills. For over three years we have worked together with advocates, legislators and regulators to define the parameters of such a program, which we believe should be statewide, and administered and funded through state agencies. Meanwhile, at CVPS, we work hard to assist our customers with billing arrangements and have significantly beefed up our Shareheat program. CVPS has worked hard to establish a positive relationship with our customers. We have no higher priority. Our employees are dedicated to customer service and I regret any negative connotations this error in judgment has had on them. We are very troubled that a representative of the company chose to make this filing. That said we take full responsibility. Strawberry Festival

��

The Chapel on the Green in West Arlington, Vermont will host a Strawberry Festival this Sunday, July 18 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Featured are homemade biscuits or vanilla ice cream with lots of strawberries and whipped cream for $4.50. Also available will be “The Works,” which will include biscuit, berries, ice cream, more berries and more whipped cream for $6. Beverages will also be available for $.50 each. The berries were all picked at their peak by members of the church at local farms then prepared and frozen for use at the festival. A special dedication service will follow at 7 p.m. in the Chapel, led by Pastor Keith Mann. All are invited to attend. Registering New Students in Salem

Families that are new to the Salem, New York school district should call the guidance office at 518-854-6010 to make appointments for registration. Parents should plan to bring copies of their students’ birth certificates, immunization records and most recent report cards to the registration appointment. The guidance office is responsible for registering all K–12 students.

Bennington Area Construction

Kubricky Construction Corporation is repaving VT Route 67A from the intersection of Route 67A & Route 7A northerly to the intersection of Scarey Lane. Also included are the ramps for VT Route 279 and, in North Bennington, Route 67 from Bank Road to Homestead Mews and from Bank 200’ north over the railroad tracks. The expected completion date is October 10, 2010. This project will consist of grinding the existing pavement and resurfacing with two more courses of pavement and pavement markings along with drainage improvements, new signs, guardrail improvements, sidewalk ramps and other incidental items. Motorists should expect traffic flow to be maintained at all times with traffic control present. Motorists are asked to use extreme caution while traveling through the zone. SVAC Presents Night at the Races

As part of its Summer Collection, the Southern Vermont Arts Center (SVAC) is offering a glimpse into the colorful world of horseracing with A Night at the Races: A Fun Filled Evening of Thoroughbred Race Action this Saturday, July 17 in SVAC’s Arkell Pavilion in Manchester, Vermont. This special evening to benefit the programs SVAC includes onscreen racing, a Kentucky Derbythemed buffet prepared by Chef Mariah Macfarlane from Café Mamie and a cash bar featuring Mint Juleps. Bet on favorite “colors” to win Mad Money, redeemable for both the silent auction and the live auction at the end of the evening. Ascots and smoking jackets are optional, but there will be a prize for the wearer of the most spectacular Derby Day hat. Nature Camp for Kids

The Pember Museum will be presenting Nature Camp for children age 6 and older at the Hebron Nature Preserve on route 22 in Hebron, New York. Camp is a week long from 9 a.m. to noon, and there will be two sessions to choose from: July 26-30 or August 2-6. The cost is $125 for a one-week session. Financial aid is available, and application can be made by contacting the museum. Activities include nature walks, pond study, nature journaling, animal tracking and track-making, skull investigation, bird studies, and flower and tree identification. There will be crafts, such as making flower presses, bone art, bird feeders and more. Each participant will receive a camp photo to take home. Registration is necessary by July 23. What is a Watershed?

The Mark Skinner Library: Manchester’s Public Library in Manchester, Vermont will host a “What is a Watershed” program on Thursday, July 15 at 10:30 a.m. Presented by the Nature Museum at Grafton, this educational program is appropriate for children ages five and older and will teach the importance of protecting clean water sources. This is just one event in a six-week series of fun and educational water-themed activities put on as part of the Summer Reading Program at the library. Accomplished teen singers Taylor Ampatiellos and Natalie Brierre, directed and accompanied by Rip Jackson, will perform a selection of Broadway, classical and popular music at Grace Church in Rutland, Vermont on Tuesday, July 20 at 7 p.m. Natalie Brierre, a 16-year-old soprano and alto, has appeared in a variety of Grace Church concerts and other local productions and was recently accepted into the theater arts program at Walnut Hill School in Massachusetts. Her cousin, 13year-old Taylor Ampatiellos, a boy soprano and alto, has performed with Grace Church, Opera Theatre of Weston, Weston Playhouse Theatre Company and local theater groups. Arlington Garden Club Garden Tour

The Arlington Garden Club in Arllington, Vermont will offer a Garden Tour this Saturday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Arlington Inn on the day of the tour or in advance at The Arlington Inn, Berkshire Bank, Northshire Bookstore and East Arlington Framers. Proceeds will benefit the Garden Club Scholarship Fund. The tour,“Summer in Vermont: A Tour of Eight Local Gardens,” will include live music at some sites, as well as art by local artists. Artist Judy Cotter, whose garden is featured on the tour, will open her studio to those on the tour. The Arlington Garden Club will also hold a basket raffle on Saturday, July 17. Garden Tour to Beneﬁt SVAC “One of the best private gardens in North America.” That is what the well-known and respected garden writer Allen Lacy has said of North Hill in Readsboro, Vermont. This Saturday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., North Hill will open its celebrated garden gates to visitors to benefit the Southern Vermont Arts Center (SVAC). Begun on raw ground in 1977, surrounded by a larger tract of mature hardwood forest of beech and maple, the garden has reached a settled maturity and features a comprehensive collection of plants very suitable to the area, as well as more exotic plantings. The site, which is under intense cultivation, includes heathers and dwarf conifers, antique and species roses, bamboos, unusual perennials and annuals, an extensive rock and bog garden, a large collection of hybrid deciduous magnolias, an ornamental veg-

Dorset Historical Society Events

The first in the Dorset Historical Society’s (DHS) three rounds of “conversations with friends and family” of Dorset, Vermont artists focuses on Dean Fausett, whose work is the subject of the current Venetian Red Gallery exhibit at DDS’s Bley House Museum. On Thursday, July 22 (5 p.m.. to 7 p.m.), Gerald and Darleane Canton, visiting from their home in Ohio, will recall their friendship with Fausett. The 33rd Variety Day Fair in Wells, Vermont will be held rain or shine all day this Saturday, July 17. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. An array of craft, flea, antique, plant and specialty food vendors will be set up on the Village Green. The biggest event will be the all-day silent auction which will end at 3:30 p.m. Over 50 businesses, merchants, manufacturers, restaurants and vendors have contributed a number of useful items. With any event like this, food is central. Variety Day will feature a traditional burger stand with hamburgers, hotdogs and sausages dressed up with onions, sauce, chips and cheese sticks; veggie burgers will also be offered. Nearby will be the ice cream booth with Stewart’s ice cream. The Vermont Food Court will offer macaroni and sharp Cabot cheese, sugarhouse dinner maple baked beans, choices of fruit or potato salads and Vermont strawberry shortcake with real whipped cream. All items can be separately purchased. At the Larson Farm Booth, learn about how to purchase healthier foods locally. Find out about unpasteurized milk, free range eggs, grassfed beef and a vast variety of vegetables. Learn what local farms are producing and who they are. Find out about the new Farm-Food movement in Rutland County and RAFFL (Rutland Area Farm and Food Link) and new farmer initiatives — summer and now all-winter farmers’ markets, CSAs and the new Local Food Hub in Rutland County. The “Grow an Extra Row” project produced 10,000 pounds of fresh veggies for 14 food pantries in Rutland County in 2009. Find out how to contribute to this effort to provide healthy food to all Vermonters. All day there will be a treasure hunt in a sawdust pile. At 10 a.m. is the Pet Parade, and games for elementary age kids will start at 11 a.m. Games and contests for junior and senior high students begin at 1 p.m. At 1:30 p.m. will be the Ice Cream Eating Contest. What a tasty way to become a winner! At 2 p.m. is the Frog Jumping Contest (competitors should bring their own frogs). Garden Tour in Easton

The Washington County Historical Society will hold a garden tour in historic Easton New York this Sunday, July 18 with ticket sales beginning at noon at Burton Hall on Route 40 in North Easton, New York. Advance tickets may be purchased at the Green Pea Market on Main Street in Greenwich, New York. Participants will see nine beautiful gardens lovingly maintained by local residents in the Township of Easton. The tour will begin with storyteller Nancy Marie Payne portraying Ann Wilbur, Quaker Farm Wife at 1 p.m. telling the true story of freedom seeker Frank Quaintance at the Quaintance House on Route 40. Quaintance was assisted to freedom by the Wilburs who were a Quaker family. Union Village (as Greenwich was known in the mid-1800s) and Easton were places of anti-slavery activity. The Wilbur family, Quaker abolitionists, left their mark on history with their quiet ways and brave stands for the cause of the freedom seeker. There are still descendants of the family residing in the area. Following this, the group will journey to the nearby Easton Friends North Meeting House to hear another true story about Ann and Esther, her mother-in-law, and a group of women abolitionists who held a gathering in the meeting house. At 2:30 p.m., following the storytelling presentation, participants will be on their own to visit the gardens of Easton on the tour, available until 5 p.m. Maps to each garden spot are included with ticket price. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., author Teri Gay will be at Burton Hall to discuss and sign copies of her book, “Strength Without Compromise,” about the women’s suffrage movement in Easton and the surrounding area. Racy, Raucous Avenue Q Visits Weston Stage The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company will present the Vermont premiere of Avenue Q, the hilarious and politically incorrect comedy that edged out Wicked to win the 2004 Tony Award for Best Musical. Somewhat racy, but with a “gigantic heart,” this contemporary cult-classic is really a Sesame Street for grownups. Set in a highly diverse, very musical neighborhood populated by eccentric characters (including adult puppets and their visible puppeteers), the show deals with adult problems in all shapes and sizes. It plays on Weston’s MainStage in Weston, Vermont from July 15 through July 31. Avenue Q tells the story of a bright-eyed, recent college graduate named Princeton who settles in Avenue Q, the last affordable neighborhood in New York City. In warm and witty songs like “Everyone’s a Little

Bit Racist,” and “The Internet is for Porn,” Princeton and his new friends (a mix of live characters and puppets) learn about losing a job, falling in love and finding a place in the world. Suggested for mature audiences, the show was conceptualized by Tony winners Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, who wrote the music and lyrics to go with the Jeff Whitty’s Tonywinning book. Like all Weston productions, Avenue Q is complemented by extensive education and outreach programs. Director Fort will discuss the play in the Playhouse Living Room 30 minutes before curtain on July 15 and 16 and before the July 17 matinee. Distinguished International Artists Gather for Marlboro Music’s 60th Season Artistic directors Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida, along with an illustrious international group of colleagues and young professional musicians, recently gathered for dinner in the converted cow barn that serves as the dining hall for Vermont’s Marlboro Music School and Festival. This marked the start of the 60th season of what Alex Ross in The New Yorker Magazine called “classical music’s most coveted retreat.”

As a ‘thank you’ to their Marlboro and Vermont neighbors, the resident musicians are giving an admission-free concert, which already is fully subscribed, this Friday, July 16 at 8:30 p.m. at Persons Auditorium on the hilltop campus of Marlboro College, the home of the Marlboro Music community. The season offers five weekends of concerts on Saturdays at 8:30 p.m., Sundays at 2:30 p.m. and Friday, August

Trek for Health V Announces Challenge Results

Guest Preacher at Federated Church

A celebration is due in Bennington, Vermont, as more than 1,440 community members completed Southwestern Vermont Medical Center’s (SVMC) 2010 Trek for Health challenge. Trek for Health is a pedometer-based, step-counting program for individuals and teams sponsored by SVMC’s Wellness Connection that is in its fifth year. Team members counted and recorded their steps from April 11 through May 22. All together, members of the 121 teams which completed the six-week walking challenge walked the equivalent of almost 469,000,000 steps. That’s equal to more than 230,000 miles — or the distance from the earth to the moon! A great way to exercise, walking doesn’t require a lot of equipment, is easy on the joints, and anyone who is mobile can do it anywhere. This year, 56 teams completed an average of 8,000 to 10,000 steps per day (that’s four to five miles) and 843 individuals completed an average of three miles or more per day. The top teams — based on their average step counts per day — were: 1) Steps for Jesus; 2) The Bennington Legends; 3) NSK The Manipulators; 4) MACK Four Quick JABS; and 5) MACK Quick Steppers.

The Federated Church of East Arlington, Vermont welcomes back guest preacher Rev. Constance Moser, who will lead worship at 10 a.m. this Sunday, July 18 at The Federated Church of East Arlington on Ice Pond Road. The choir will be conducted and accompanied by Music Director Paul Opel. Following worship all are invited to Bailey Hall for refreshments and fellowship. FINE ARTS Vermont Hand Crafters Accepting New Members

Vermont Hand Crafters is looking for creative and artistic Vermonters to join this not-forprofit organization dedicated to furthering the excellence of fine crafts and art that is created in Vermont. The 2010 jury applications are now available online. All applicants must be legal residents of Vermont who produce original handmade art and craft items. Applicants selected for membership will join a nurturing and inclusive community of Vermont artists and artisans. One of the benefits of Vermont Hand Crafters membership is the ability to participate in the annual Fine Art Craft Show held at the Sheraton Hotel & Conference Center in South Burlington, Vermont the third week in November. & CRAFTS Equinox Village Hosts Recorder Ensemble and Artist The second of Equinox Village and the Greater Manchester Arts Council’s collaborative art openings will be held at 5:30 p.m. this Thursday, July 15 at the Gallery at Equinox Village in Manchester Center, Vermont. The Gallery will host the Emerald Valley Recorder Ensemble, led by Julie Freebern. The group formed after a “Joy of Recorder” class at the Green Mountain Academy for Life Long Learning. The group will playi a diverse program of music dating as far back as 1523 on recorders of all shapes and sizes. The instruments are made from a variety of wood types and include both Renaissance and Baroque styles.

July’s artist, Chris Smith, was a raised in Ridgefield, Connecticut. He is a 1990 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. While studying, he spent a year in Rome. He moved to West Rupert in 2007. His show for Equinox Village includes paintings from the past 25 years of his career and several new pieces. All are oils, and several are very large. The hors d’oeuvres for the evening will be no less impressive. Executive Chef Glenn Blackledge will prepare a delectable and surprising array of small bites. Gallery Opening Events are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. the third Thursday of each month for the rest of 2010. The events

are free and open to the public. Eighty percent of proceeds from art sales go directly to the artist, while the remaining 20 percent benefits the Greater Manchester Arts Council. Vermont Watercolor Society Annual Awards Exhibition Take a ride to Grafton, Vermont for the Vermont Watercolor Society’s Annual Awards Exhibition at the Hunter Gallery of Fine Art and Phelps Gallery at the Old Tavern. Historical Society Lecture on Contra and Square Dancing

Bobcat Workshop in Belmont

Bobcats are one of the most widely distributed carnivores in the contiguous U.S. In the Northeast, the bobcat is listed as a furbearer and is harvested under regulated trapping and hunting seasons. It has been identified as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. State Wildlife Biiologist Kim Royar will present a bobcat workshop at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 21 at the Mt. Holly Library in Belmont, Vermont. Royar’s presentation will include a brief history of bobcats in Vermont and bobcat ecology and will then discusses the results of a study by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. Royar currently specializes in the conservation and management of furbearer populations, state lands management and outreach to landowners and others. She has worked for the Department for 29 years. Royar has also been a member of the Ninevah Foundation board (co-sponsor of the event) for six years and an active community participant living in East Wallingford, Vermont.
