The 2008/2009 season of Manchester’s First Wednesdays Series has ended and we would like to thank those who helped make the program possible. We are grateful to the Vermont Humanities Council for bringing this first class lecture series to the Manchester area. Ali White, FW Coordinator, did a superb job of recruiting regionally, nationally, and internationally renowned speakers for the series. Army National Guard Pvt. Sarah J. Ryan has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. She is the daughter of Susan and Robert Ryan of High St., Bridport, VT. Ryan is a 1996 graduate of Middlebury Union High School, VT. Army Reserve Pvt. Brittni Kegan has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. She is the daughter of Robin Amell of Browns Lane, Fort Edward, NY. The private is a 2008 graduate of Fort Edward School. Air Force Airman Aaron S. Freebern graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program

that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. He is the son of Darcy Freebern of Hartman Road, Hudson Falls, NY. Freebern is a 2008 graduate of Hudson Falls Central School. Matthew J. Cutler was recently promoted to the rank of Major, United States Marine Corps. Brigadier General Raymond Fox, Commanding General, First Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW) presided over the ceremony on February 3, 2009 at the 1st MAW Headquarters in Okinawa, Japan. Major Cutler, a communications officer, has been stationed with 1st MAW for the past two years. He currently

works as the G-6 Operations Officer, responsible for tactical communication plans that support the 1st MAW. Matt graduated in 1994 from MAUHS and is a 1998 graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, SC. He is the son of Richard and Debbie Cutler, and the grandson of Merle and Mary Johnson, and Marion Cutler, all of Bennington. Major Cutler will deploy this summer for his third combat tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. ��

The ‘Shires Of Vermont’ Magazine Arrives in the County The “Shires of Vermont” magazine was just hitting the streets here as it was also arriving at distribution points in Vermont State Welcome Centers, New York’s Capitol Region, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The printing of the second edition was just one more accomplishment for a branding initiative that began four years ago. Published in partnership with Media News Group, “The Shires” magazine is the long awaited lure piece for Vermont’s southwest region. The design features the neighboring southeastern region’s Southern Vermont Adventures magazine on the flip side thus doubling exposure for the entire southern tier of the Green Mountain State. In addition, the centerfold map unites the two regions while highlighting three designated national scenic roadways: the Molly Stark, Stone Valley and Connecticut River Valley Byways. The cover of this edition of The Shires magazine depicts the Will Moses painting commissioned by The Shires of Vermont Regional Marketing Organization in 2008 to represent the region, collectively the 17 towns and villages of Bennington County including Bennington and Manchester, a popular destination for those seeking an authentic Vermont experience. The Moses painting has been on tour from south to north throughout The Shires, on display at banks and cultural sites since its unveiling in March. The tour will conclude in October at Northshire Bookstore, Vermont’s largest independent bookstore. Having a magazine representative of The Shires with out-of-state distribution has been a goal of the group since the branding initiative was undertaken in 2005. The Shires brand is rooted in both the area’s rich history and the important connection between its north and south shire communities. The editorial content of the new magazine reflects this with articles in the summer edition covering topics like: Bennington’s Moosefest, 200 years of hospitality at the Dorset Inn, 25 years for the Spivak family at Bennington’s Hawkins House, Norman Rockwell’s Arlington roots, the Batten Kill Trout Restoration Project, Northshire Bookstore and Don Sawyer’s “On the Road” featuring Manchester resident Donnie Dorr — each a wonderful slice of life in The Shires of Vermont. Annual Arlington Carnival

The Arlington Fire Company #1 annual Carnival and Chili CookOff will be held Friday, July 17, 5 to 10 p.m., and Saturday, July 18, 3 to 10 p.m. at the Fisher Elementary School. Mark Skinner Library Story Walk at the Rec

Read all about a teddy bear named Corduroy when you visit the Manchester Rec. Park this summer. Beginning on July 9, the book, “Corduroy,” by Don Freeman will be on display at the Dana L. Thompson Recreation Center for 2 weeks. Look for the first page of the Story Walk near the picnic pavilion closest to the parking lot near the playgrounds. The next page will be posted not far away. Combine reading with the joys of walking outdoors as you follow the story from beginning to end. There will be a weatherproof box containing a guest list at the end of the Story Walk. Another exciting, new and different part of “Be Creative at Your Library,” this summer’s reading theme, is a community pastel project. Stop by the Mark Skinner Library: Manchester’s Public Library, and color a piece of a famous painting. When you do, you will receive a free admission to the Southern Vermont Arts Center, which is collaborating with the Library on several events this summer to encourage reading and creativity in children and adults alike. Londonderry Historical Society

The Londonderry Historical Society had a good turnout for our annual meeting which included the unveiling of our painted theater curtains, a free performance by Mud Time Theater and a display of theater related artifacts. The July exhibit is, appropriately enough, “Londonderry’s Waterways”. It includes great pictures of the 1927 flood as well as quite a few donated by Barbara Butts of the 1973 and 1976 floods. The August exhibit will be of local artists and be held in conjunction with the newly formed art guild. From My Corner

— Susan J. Coons ...accomplishment... My grandmother was my greatest influence on my early life. She was absolutely the best gramma anyone could ever, ever have; lots of fun to be around, all the time. I loved to watch her cook supper and bake pies, cakes and cookies. I also watched her when she was canning tomatoes and making sauerkraut. She always let me help her. I remember standing on a stool close to her, watching her cook. I was about six years old when she gave me a small brown paper bag filled with flour, salt and pepper, and let me shake each pork chop in the bag for frying. Gramma’s masterpiece was pie. Absolutely the best crust in the world! And, she never measured anything! She could bake bread that way, too. I’ve tried to bake bread, but it always comes out of the oven like a brick! I would need a jackhammer to make a dent in it. The kids and I chose to celebrate the fourth on the fifth last week because the weather

was going to be better. I barbecued ribs and chicken; made German potato salad; corn; and had watermelon for dessert. My daughter requested that I bake a rhubarb pie. Reluctantly, I said, “Oh, all right...” So Sunday morning I was up early sweeping and cleaning, and pulling rhubarb out of the garden. I felt a summer laziness and didn’t want to have a lot of dishes to wash up. So, I didn’t use measuring cups or spoons for anything except to sift the flour. For the first time ever in baking, I quite literally, “threw it together”. It came out of the oven looking like, and tasting just like Gramma’s pie! Wow! What an accomplishment! I’m so proud of myself! Dare I ever try this again?

Land Surveys Now and Then

Private lands, settlements and towns have been surveyed from the early days. How were the surveys performed? Who performed them? What kind of experience did they have? How should we evaluate their findings? If you are curious about these questions and more come to the July 28 meeting of the Wallingford Historical Society. Hear Vermonter Mike Bradley, retired SGN, U.S. Army; share his experiences in the service, as a proprietor of Vanguard Information Systems, followed by over 25 years providing Vermont land surveyors with records and more. He has lent his expertise in court cases, assisting in disputes as well as issues large and small in rural areas and towns throughout Vermont. His keen interest in surveying matched with a love of history about the land has served to fill in gaps that records oftentimes omitted. The Broadway Boys Return To The Weston Playhouse

The Broadway Boys, a collection of the hottest male voices working on the New York stage, returns to the Weston Playhouse at 7:30 p.m. on July 20 for an encore performance of its 2007 triumph. The prior event, which marked the Boys’ first appearance outside New York City, stunned a sold-out Weston audience and generated repeated requests for a return appearance. Hailed for its close-harmony renderings of show tunes and pop hits presented with a contemporary flair, The Broadways Boys has exhilarated audiences in such notable Big Apple venues as Birdland, Joe’s Pub and Le Bernardin Restaurant. Variety Day Fair in Wells

The Wells Variety Day Fair returns on Saturday, July 18. This is the 32nd time for this event to grace the Village Green and United Methodist Church lawn. It kicks off with many old time and some new antique and flea vendors, featuring collectibles, crafts including jewelry, woodenware, pottery, knits, paintings, prints, special foods, maple syrup, maple sugar products, jams and jellies. There will also be a variety of plants, herbs, annuals, perennials and house plants. New this year will be the Larson’s unique booth promoting local agriculture. You will learn of local farmers in this area and their diverse home grown animal and plant products for healthy living. The Year of Magical Thinking Brings Magic to Weston Playhouse

The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company presents “The Year of Magical Thinking,” the stage adaptation of Joan Didion’s best-selling memoir about love, death and imagination which won the National Book Award in 2005 and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. The recent Broadway production, which The New York Times called “remarkable,” starred Vanessa Redgrave and was directed by Academy Award and Tony Award nominee David Hare. The play opens July 15 at the WPTC OtherStages, located on Route 100 a mile and a half north of the Weston Playhouse and closes on August 2. The Year of Magical Thinking chronicles Didion’s struggle with the passing, in one year, of her husband, fellow writer John Gregory Dunne, and daughter. At once both personal and universal, Didion’s unique and memorable exploration of her need to find life in the face of death is illuminating, moving and, surprisingly, comforting. Starring in this unforgettable one-woman show is Susan Blommaert, whose extensive credits include Broadway, regional theatres, TV’s Law and Order and the recent film of Doubt. Weston Playhouse Theatre Company Producing Director Malcolm Ewen will direct the play. Director Ewen will discuss the play 30 minutes before curtain on July 15, 16, 17 and 18 (matinee only) and will lead a talkback in the theatre following the performance on Sundays, July 19, July 26 and Aug. 2. Arlington Garden Club Presents Christmas in July

��

Christmas in July is the intriguing theme of the quadrennial Standard Flower Show to be presented by the Arlington Garden Club on Saturday, July 18, at one of Arlington’s most beautiful and historic homes, the residence of Don and Verrall Keelan at 549 Battenkill Drive (Rte. 313 West), about half a mile west of Route 7A.The show will be open to the public from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Admission is by donation. Seven of the most beloved songs of the Christmas season will be interpreted in flower designs by club members, to be judged according to strict rules established by the National Garden Clubs, Inc. The fun and the challenge will come from how each participant translates the song assigned to the class she has entered. “Jingle Bells” is the theme for four entries in the living room; “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” for five entries in the sitting room; “White Christmas” with four entries in the dining room; “Deck the Halls” with four entries in the upstairs hallway; “Angels We Have Heard On High” will have eight entries in various bedrooms; and “Away in a Manger” exhibits will be placed in the master bedroom and dressing room. An important second division of this Standard Flower Show is for Horticulture entries. There are seven sections in this division: vegetables and fruits; roses; container-grown plants (except hanging plants); bulbs, corns and Ttubers; arboreals; annuals; and perennials and biennials. Special exhibits to be featured will be the Battenkill Reclamation Project and the Yellow Barn development, arranged by club member Sarah Smith, with the cooperation of Arlington selectwoman and State representative, Cynthia Browning. Judy Cotter and Leslie Olcott serve as co-chairs in charge of planning and staging this Flower Show. Committee members include Alice Ashley, Sally Ayrey, Wendy Bucchieri, Dot Closs, Mary de Brun, Dot Grout, Barbara Weakley, Marilyn Houston, Jackie LaBatt, Ellen Lipshutz, Marge Maas, Jill Roosma and Fran Shepherd. Don and Verrall Keelan have extended the hospitality of their home and beautiful grounds to include an invitation to enjoy a walk along the 1500-foot path they have developed bordering the Battenkill River to the south of their 14 acres of lawn and meadow. (Bring walking shoes for this adventure.) Their classic Greek Revival center hall Colonial was built circa 1822 by Cyrus Canfield for his bride, Chloe Hard. The property was acquired by R. K. Miles, Sr. in 1917, and held by the Miles family until purchased by the Keelan’s in 1986. Mrs. Miles was an early member of the Arlington Garden Club, which was founded in 1941.

Trek Women Triathlon Series

The new Trek Women Triathlon Series will take place in ten cities in 2009 including Mount Snow, Vermont. The Series is aimed at breaking down barriers for women athletes and is the only Women’s Triathlon Series created by women, run by women, and exclusively for women. Join Hall of Fame triathlete Sally Edwards, Spokeswoman/Chief Inspiration Officer for the Trek Women Triathlon Series in this lifechanging triathlon where every participant is a winner! Series Director Maggie Sullivan has been a major force in building participation opportunities within the sport of triathlon for women for over 19 years. The event starts with a half-mile Swim from Snow Lake’s sandy beach. Snow Lake is a 10-acre spring-fed lake with average water temperature of 72 degrees in August. Athletes will bike through the Vermont countryside on 12 miles of gently rolling backcountry roads — an out and back course on Handle Road. The 3.1 mile Run segment is a combination of roads and mountain trails within the confines of the Mount Snow Resort. Spectators will enjoy unobstructed views of the swim course and the tremendous Green Mountain vistas of the Mount Snow Resort. Triathletes will enjoy a rolling course, great volunteers, an exciting Finish Line near the Resort’s Grand Summit Hotel. On the charity front, The Trek Women Triathlon Series is partnering with The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and The National Association of Team Survivor, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization for women who have a present or past diagnosis of cancer. Team Survivor provides women with free group exercise, health education classes and support programs. The Trek Women Triathlon Series and Team Survivor allow women in the program to train, receive complimentary race registration for their first triathlon and benefit from special race day support.

Local Curves Commends Member on 1,000 Workouts

Joanna Taylor, a Curves of Manchester Center member, was recently recognized for her completion of 1,000 workouts. Joanna started her Curves membership six years ago. Bird Walk at Hildene

The next survey of birds at Hildene will be Saturday, July 18, meeting at the Hildene visitor center at 7 a.m. During the June walk, despite the rains of the month, observers recorded 45 different species, noted nesting activity for Great Crested Flycatcher, Hairy Woodpecker and Warbling Vireo and counted several juvenile birds. Two Marsh Wrens brought the species total for the Hildene property to 114. Dates for future walks will be August 15 and September 12. American Museum of Fly Fishing Celebrates Summer

On Saturday, July 18, from 1-3 p.m., the American Museum of Fly Fishing, in Manchester, VT, will host a free Ice Cream Social to celebrate summer and National Ice Cream Day. The rain date will be Sunday, July 19. Stop by the museum grounds for a cone or a cup of your favorite flavor and stay for the family-friendly activities planned for all ages. There will be fly casting demonstrations, where you can try your hand at casting, as well as other special fishing related activities for those too small to wield a fly rod. Kids can make a clown fly, catch a fish in our pool, decorate a trout, or take target practice with kid-sized rods. In addition, the museum will be offering special pricing for family entrance to view our newest exhibit: Gadgets and Gear: 20th Century Innovations in Fly Fishing. Twenty-ﬁfth Dorset Antiques Festival

The Dorset Library Association invites antiques lovers everywhere to come browse through its outdoor antiques show and sale on Saturday, July 18 on the Village Green in Dorset. Over the past 48 years this biennial event has earned a reputation for presenting topnotch dealers selling top-of-the-line antiques. Its beautiful southwest corner of Vermont setting has made it a great favorite with customers and dealers alike. Betty Forbes and Linda Turner Antiques Shows of South Portland, Maine have managed the show since its inception in 1961. Dorset is the Saturday of Brimfield Week and many attending or exhibiting in Massachusetts make it a point of heading north approximately two hours and 15 minutes for this jewel of a show, according to show manager Linda Turner. Every other year the residents of Dorset graciously allow exhibits on their tree-shaded front lawns. This year a wedding will take place right after the show closes so the exhibitors on the church lawn and drive and the exhibitors on the road to the golf club will be relocated to spaces nearby. If your favorite exhibitor usually sets up at either of those sites, please ask for their new location at the admissions table. Jewett-Berdan of Newcastle, ME will have Americana, folk art, textiles and paint decorated items. Koblenz and Co. of South Kent, CT will have a large selection of estate jewelry. Paul and Karen Wendhiser of Ellington, CT will exhibit 18th-early 20th century country American furniture and accessories, garden elements and folk art. Pam and Martha Boynton of Groton, MA will exhibit two good banks, silhouettes by Puffy Sleeve, a potato stamped hanging basket from Maine, a painted candle stand in original graining and Taconic baskets. Douglas Ramsay Antiques of Hadley, MA will have a set of four bittersweet orange folding camp chairs, a Hepplewhite tavern table in original red paint. The show will take place rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with an admission of $7. Early buying is from 8-10 a.m., with an admission of $25. Exhibit of Oils & Pastels to Open at The Gallery

On Thursday, July 16 from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m., Equinox Village will host an opening event for a collaborative exhibit. Pastel artist Angela Arkway and oil painter Brian Sweetland will be featured at The Gallery at Equinox Village from July 16 through August 14. A resident of both Vermont and New York City, Arkway’s work focuses on the Vermont landscape and domestic animals. She finds the immediacy and flexibility of her medium inspiring in its ability to capture luminous color and a broad range of textures. Sweetland is a full-time resident of Vermont whose work focuses on landscapes and still lifes. His style is founded in the Impressionist traditions with an underlying compositional architecture that is careful and deliberate. The exhibit opening is free and open to the public. Woody Jackson’s Kids Art Class

Broadway’s Bright Lights to Heat Up Riley Center

Baritone Steven Marking has been compared to the great Met Baritone Cornell McNeil. Classically trained at Viterbo College and Peabody Conservatory of Music, his extensive concert work includes tours of Italy and the U.S. Jeff Linebeck has performed in professional regional opera and musical theater companies throughout the Northeast and is a founding member of Cantare and Voices of Vermont. Vermont’s award-winning storyteller Tom Weakley has earned numerous awards in both the U.S. and abroad. After three decades, Tom closed his international storytelling career with his retirement in 2007, but he has generously agreed to take mic in hand for a limit of two benefits a year, one of which we’re happy to say, is Neighbor to Neighbor. The Dorset Theatre Festival is pleased to announce the third show of its Summer 2009 programming. From July 22-August 8, DTF will present “The Hollow”, by Agatha Christie. “‘The Hollow’ is a sexy murder mystery I have wanted to direct for years,” says Artistic Director Carl Forsman. “The Festival has a long history of doing Agatha Christie’s plays, and I am excited to take a new look at her work.” Back by popular demand, “The Hollow” revives a Dorset community favorite and returns the suspenseful productions of Christie’s work to the Dorset Theatre Festival stage. In this Agatha Christie selection, an ensemble of characters meet at the Angkatell estate, “The through Sunday. Hollow”, for a weekend vacation. But what starts out as a weekend The Dorset Theatre Festival has been bringing professional theater to among old friends and new lovers quickly transforms into a mystery southern Vermont since the 1970s.
