OUR READERS’ LETTERS ...Mattitude...

A couple of weeks ago, Kellie Waite gave me a gift that meant the world to me: a simple rubber bracelet with the embossed word “Mattitude.” Many readers will probably understand this, as most readers, in one way or another, probably knew Matt Waite. And while countless of us mourn his loss, and think of him constantly, that rubber bracelet reminds me of the gift that Matt gave so many of us. Matt’s gift to me, though given unwittingly, and one that I would give anything to return, was one of perspective. Matt started a business with no clients, no jobs lined up, no collateral, and no cash. Yet from this he and Kellie built an extraordinary excavating and concrete business. This kind of person, with jobs spread all over southern Vermont, is one you would expect to be too busy to stop and talk, or take note. Not Matt Waite. He had the unique ability to never make you feel rushed in conversation; to make you feel as important to him as anything, or anyone. And his devotion to his wife and daughters was shown not just in

adoration, but in the attention he gave them, and the intense interest he had in their own passions. I did not want this gift of perspective, but I take the responsibility of having it very seriously. How many times I have rushed to finish a conversation when I really didn’t need to rush. How often I’ve labored over the difficulties of life when its beautiful bounty is laid out before me. And now, how many times I tearfully stop and thank Matt for giving me this perspective as I hug my wife, my children, my family and friends and tell them how much they mean to me. So in the brutal delivery of this gift, I am thankful for what it has given me. My hope in sharing this is that others will recognize the one value in this tragedy: that friendship and kindness are gifts we have in ourselves, and how important it is to show your neighbors how much you really care. Whether or not you are wearing the rubber bracelet, Mattitude is a beautiful way to honor Matt’s life. — Mark McChesney Pawlet, Vermont

I read with interest the article about the Toile de Jouy Museum (Simply Home by Lisa Laberge, July 21, 2010 Vermont News Guide). To satisfy my curoisity, I looked up Jouy and “toile” for more specifics and clarification. The town of jouy-de-Josas is in the arrondissement of district of Versailles somewhat southwest of Paris, therefore close to Marie Antoinette. It lies on the same river, Bievre, that passes close to the Gobelins tapestry manufacturing site. In english, “toile” means a fine, sheer linen cloth, or a variety of fine cretonne — unglazed cotton or linen cloth having patterns printed in colors on one or both sides. In French, “toile” is a generic term for textiles of linen, hemp or cotton. The Larousse dictionary specifies that Oberkampf instituted the workshops specifically for printing on textiles. St. Luke’s Summer Supper

For 72 years the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Main Street in Chester has been putting out “the spread” — cold soups, turkey, ham, roast beef, potato, broccoli, pasta, coleslaw, tossed green garden, and jellied salads, topped by baked beans and macaroni and cheese, beverages, rolls and delectable desserts. This year it falls on Saturday, August 7. Children can eat for $6 (6-10) and your little ones are free; adult tickets are $12. Explore Our Sustainable Gardenscape

Join horticulturist Elaine Grehl at the Mark Skinner Library: Manchester’s Public Library on Wednesday, August 4 at 7:00 p.m. for a fascinating look at sustainable gardenscapes. Past and present practices of growing plants have lasting impacts on the New England landscape. In this session, Grehl will define “Gardenscapes” as the combination of both ornamental and utilitarian purposed landscapes. Grehl will trace the evolution of the gardenscape practices of Vermont inhabitants, from 18th and 19th century colonialists to the eco-conscious landowners of the present and future. The program will conclude with an exploration of the ecologically sustainable landscapes of the future such as rain gardens, edible forest gardens, green roofs, and other permaculture principles. Bright New Ideas for Selecting Lighting For Your Home I sat down with Joanne VanDeusen, the proprietor of The Lighting Place on Main Street in Manchester to have a chat about the most common lighting questions. I came away with lots of new tips and a few tricks in helping to select the proper fixtures. Here is what she shared with me. When looking for a new lampshade, be sure to bring the lamp base in with you so you can try on different sizes and styles. It is very similar to finding the proper hat to fit your head. The size of the harp (the brass piece the shade sits on) can be changed to raise or lower the shade for a proper fit. You can also add a decorative finial to the top of the harp, which adds a custom touch. Another consideration is choice of material for the shade, a white or cream colored fabric will give you the most light, while a dark shade will create down light and add drama to a room setting. There is a way to tell if your lamp has a one-way or threeway socket. Remove the bulb and for safety’s sake unplug the lamp, then look into the socket.

One horizontal brass contact is a one-way socket; a horizontal brass and small silver contact is a three-way socket. Obviously, push-through switches are always one-way. You want to go check your lamps, don’t you? Go ahead, but remember to unplug the fixture first! The Green Revolution is quite evident in the light bulb section of the store with technologic al changes coming fast and furiously. All of us are getting more comfortable with CFLs, Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs, with their spiral shape, but now they have a variety that looks like a regular bulb with the spiral shape encased inside. Use these if you have clip on shades or wherever you can see the bulb in a fixture. They have also improved the color of the bulb so look for a bulb with 2700-2800 Kelvin, which closely resembles the warm color of incandescent bulbs. And now for a stock market tip - three letters - LED. Light Emitting Diodes will be the wave of the future in lighting. They use less energy and

last longer with 25,000 hours of life and can be embedded in anything - imagine your coffee table also becoming a lamp or switching your wall on at night. We are living in very exciting times. When Joanne is asked what types of light to choose for a specific room she always recommends that a homeowner layer the light using ceiling, floor and table fixtures. A kitchen can never be too bright so think task lighting — under counter, pendants over the island, overhead light. Add personality and style to the room with your lighting choices as there are an endless variety of styles. She recommends lights be put on dimmer switches, an easy change for an electrician to make and one that saves energy and the life of your bulbs. I want to add that it is always a pleasure to shop at a specialty store because I find they have a range of prices, the sales staff are knowledgeable about their product, they back up the purchase after the sale and can provide parts when needed. Womens’ Fellowship of Dorset Church to Host Summer Supper and Rafﬂe

Planetarium Show

The Pawlet Public Library will be hosting a planetarium show on Tuesday, August 10, at 11:15. The event is free and open to the public, and is appropriate for children and adults of all ages. In a portable planetarium, the participants will see a realistic picture of the night sky and learn to find their way around the constellations. Together with slides, various topics of astronomical interest will be discussed. Noted scholar and lecturer Dr. Stephen Berk will speak at Israel Congregation on Saturday, August 14 at 7 p.m. Universally acclaimed as an “amazing,” “superb” and “entertaining” speaker, Dr. Berk will examine U.S. Presidents — from G.Washington to B.Obama — and the impact of their terms in office on the lives of American Jewry and the State of Israel. Pennies for Peace Project at Flood Brook School

Flood Brook 8th graders lead a school-wide initiative to support the Pennies for Peace Project, a program of the Central Asia Institute. This non-profit organization’s mission is to promote and support community-based education, especially for girls, in remote regions of northern Pakistan and Afghanistan. The 8th graders raised awareness and pennies. When the pennies were all tallied at the end of the year, the students were pleased to announce they had raised $275 — a lot of pennies, indeed! ____________________

Austere Luxury Slate Furniture Exhibit at Slate Valley Museum on August 7

Austere Luxury: Two Artists Find Slate and Bring it Home, an exhibit of slate furniture will open at the Slate Valley Museum in Granville, New York, on Saturday, August 7 and run through October 23. Artists Olga Julinska and Felix Kniazev of Art Department will present their unique home creations and relate their journey of discovery. The artists, Felix and Olga, both originally from Russia, met and married in New York City. They have been working together for over a decade. Their summer studio, located in Wells, Vermont, commands a majestic view of the slate valley which produces the most vibrant and varied colored slate of any region in the world. The exhibit opening will begin at 6:30 p.m. on August 7 and features an informal reception with Olga Julinska and Felix Kniazev. U14 Girls Soccer Try-Outs

SVM Fusion Soccer is pleased to offer a Select Travel Soccer Program for girls entering the 7th or 8th grades this fall. Team roster will be limited to the strongest 18 players selected through try-outs and coaches invitation. Competition will include tournaments and contests against other select teams throughout the Northeast. Age Group: Girls must be entering 7th or 8th grade and be 14 or under on July 31, 2010. Program: Season runs from late August through mid-October, and will include one two-hour practice session per week in the greater Manchester area and will not conflict with school soccer schedules. Travel will include tournaments in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire as well as three to four contests to be scheduled home and away with comparable select teams in the Northeast. Coach: Andrea Lee, Burr & Burton Academy’s JV Boys coach and coach of the SVM Fusion U14 White team, will again serve as head coach. Andrea led the 2009 U14 Girls Regional Select team to three second place tournament finishes last fall. Andrea captained the ColbySawyer Women’s Varsity team in college and was selected for the Olympic Development soccer program in Massachusetts. The fee is $200 per player and covers player registration, insurance, uniform, coach stipend, tournament entry fees and field expenses. Friends and family are happy to accept the extras we can give them. Some of our golden-yolked eggs were used in my granddaughter’s birthday cake this week. Happy birthday, Alysha. We have had some lovely evenings. The full moon on July is known as Full Thunder (because of the thundery weather we have now), Full Hay (because of the farmers bringing in their hay), and Full Buck (because bucks’ antlers covered with velvet are beginning to emerge). The four planets, Saturn, Mars, Venus and Mercury can still be seen in the west at twilight. Venus is by far the brightest planet in the sky, and brighter than many stars.

We are entering the quiet phase of bird watching. Many of them are finished nesting though some are still feeding young. They will start molting soon if they haven’t started yet, and as a rule retire to the safety of woodlands until their new feathers are in. It is always fun to watch the young at the feeders. They gobble down everything in sight, but if a parent shows up they beg as if they haven’t eaten all day. I heard a few crickets warming up their instruments a few nights ago; a sound I would like to enjoy, but which reminds me that summer will soon be coming to a close. Get out and enjoy summer. Bennington County Ducks Unlimited Helping to Clean Up Gulf Coast

The Bennington County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited is proud to be part of the effort that is underway to assist in the cleanup and restoration of the gulf coast wetlands. Ducks Unlimited is dedicated to the preservation of thousands of acres of wetlands and watershed areas that are home to many species of animals, including the breeding grounds for hundreds of migratory birds. D-U has undertaken a project of building and placing wood duck houses in area swamps and marshland. We are looking for interested volunteers of adults and children who want to participate and learn hands-on about wildlife and wetlands conservation. Last year, the local Ducks Unlimited organization raised over $20K in Bennington County at the annual fundraising dinner. This year we are challenged to double our efforts to support essential wetlands conservation. D-U will be hosting our annual dinner and auction at the West Mountain Inn in Arlington, Vermont on September 11. Saturday, August 7 is the date set for the long-awaited Annual Country Benefit Auction held under a big tent at the Federated Church of East Arlington from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine, with a preview of items beginning at 9 a.m. The wide range of items to be auctioned include tables, chairs, cabinets, hand-crafted furniture, china, power washer, power mower, professional services, gift certificates and collectibles. Refreshments including cold drinks, hot dogs and homemade baked items will be available for sale as well. The auction is sponsored by the Men’s Fellowship of the church for the purpose of raising funds to be donated to local, national and international charitable and service organizations. Esteemed Painter Arthur Jones Exhibits at Dorset Library in August

Dorset native Arthur Jones, a great favorite with area residents and collectors across the country, will exhibit his paintings at the Dorset Library during the month of August. Admired for charming landscapes and still life paintings, Jones’ work is both sophisticated and folksy, and has maintained a strong appeal for over half a century. At age 20, Mr. Jones was invited to show his work with the group known as The Southern Vermont Artists. He then advanced in 1954 to his first solo show at the Arts Center. Many years later, in the fall of 2008,

the Southern Vermont Arts Center honored him with a retrospective “Arthur Jones: Images 1948-2008” which featured forty pieces of his work. The exhibit at the Dorset Library will have over twenty affordably priced smaller paintings of his beloved barns, floral pieces and still lifes, all of which will be for sale to benefit the library. The Juicy Colors of Vermont in Two Art Workshops

Vermont artist Gary Fifer will conduct a landscape painting workshop en plein air – literally “in the open air” as part of the Southern Vermont Arts Center’s extensive schedule of art workshops for adult students. Tracing his artistic roots to the American impressionists of New York and Connecticut during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, Gary is well-known in his field and has received many awards. The workshop is open to all levels of artists and students may use any media they are comfortable with. The dates are August 24–28, Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Burlington artist Annelein Beukenkamp conducts her Flower Power watercolor workshop at the Arts Center the same week, August 26– 28, Thursday–Saturday in the Madeira Education Center of SVAC. Beukenkamp’s stunning floral watercolors will be an inspiration to any art student in their dynamic color and technique. Beukenkamp is an award winning watercolorist and Signature Member of the Vermont Watercolor Society. Free August Opening Celebration at Yester House

Southern Vermont Arts Center continues its summer of outstanding art exhibitions with a free opening party for its August solo artists. The works of Kevin Bubriski, Kirsten Hoving, Ben Moss, Judith Lee Page, Leslie Parke, Kathie Thompson, Polly Thompson and Tracy BakerWhite will be on display in SVAC’s beautiful Yester House galleries from August 28–September 26. ENTERTAINMENT Wood’s Tea Company Concert in Townshend

The Wood’s Tea Company will perform a free public concert on Saturday, August 14, at 7 p.m. on the Townshend Common. The awardwinning band will entertain the crowd with its special brand of lively American folk music, bluegrass, fiery Celtic tunes, French Canadian songs, sea shanties, and engaging comedy. Established in 1981, Wood’s Tea Company has played from pubs to Lincoln Center and on National Public Radio. A unique style of audience rapport and music that features rich four-part vocal harmonies will set toes to tapping and leave everyone smiling. The band includes Howard Wooden, Tom MacKenzie and Patti Casey. Wood’s Tea Company is a musical group that defies categorization. In addition to playing a wide variety of musical styles, they employ as many as a dozen different instruments during their performances, including banjos, bouzoukis and bodhrans, guitars, ukulele and hammered dulcimer. This eleventh annual Wood’s Tea Company concert in Townshend is sponsored annually in celebration of Grace Cottage Hospital by a grateful supporter. Established 61 years ago, Grace Cottage offers professional, personalized healthcare to the community. The 19-bed hospital has emergency services, radiology and lab, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, physicians’ offices, and a retail pharmacy. Bandstand on Weston Village Green

Once again, by popular demand, the historic Bandstand on the Weston village green will sway to the bewitching music of The Blue Flames steel band, playing their second benefit concert for the Farrar Park Association. It all takes place on Friday, August 13, from 5 - 7. The “Nine Green Ladies” invite all to come picnic on the village green and enjoy not only the live music, but hors d’ouevres and a chance at tempting raffle prizes donated by Weston restaurants, Inns and local businesses. All the good music and great fun is in the good cause of support for maintenance of the lovely village green, which is surprisingly not owned by the village! In 1886 the land, then a frog pond, was deeded to the nine original founders of The Farrar Park Association by a special act of the Vermont Legislature, in order to beautify the town and create a restful spot for enjoyment of the public. Since that date, a Board of nine Weston women has been fulfilling that mandate. This year the fun and music are free for all, with good will donations gladly accepted. Proceeds from the raffle will be used to create a new small signboard to be placed on the green, displaying a map of our historic village spots along with the simple rules which insure the restfulness of this center of Weston. Reminiscent of a time when love was “Like a Heatwave,” the golden era of the girl group returns to Weston as the Off Broadway hit “The Marvelous Wonderettes” brings good times and great tunes to the Weston Playhouse Theatre Company’s Other Stages. Some of the bestloved songs of the 50s and 60s – from “Mr. Sandman” to “Leader of the Pack” – will fill the air as this hilarious, “feel good” production provides close harmonies and intense rivalries as big as the Wonderettes’ crinoline skirts. Sponsored by Northeast Delta Dental, the show runs at the intimate Weston Rod & Gun Club, 1.5 miles north of Weston on Route 100, from August 12 through 29. Written and created by Roger Bean, this Vermont premiere begins at the 1958 Springfield High School prom when the four Wonderettes, friends who are harmonious only when singing together, are called upon to provide the evening’s entertainment. As they perform such classic hits as “Lollipop,”“Stupid Cupid,”“Lipstick on Your Collar,”“It’s My Party,” and “Respect,” we follow the highs and lows of these four competing friends at the prom, and later at their tenth reunion. “I am a hopeless fan of the music from this era,” says WPTC Producing Director Tim Fort, who is directing the production. “And having the opportunity to hear it this close – so beautifully arranged and sung – is my idea of heaven. I never want to leave the prom!” The Wonderettes, played by four Playhouse favorites include Piper Goodeve, Suzanna Neeley Bridges, Amy Fitts and Jennifer Zappola. Assisting Director Tim Fort are six veterans of Weston’s popular OtherStages program including Michael Hicks (Music Director), Terrie Robinson (Choreographer), Tim Mackabee (Scenic Designer), Travis McHale (Lighting Designer), Collette Benoit (Costume Designer) and Jess Johnston (Production Stage Manager). Like all Weston productions,“The Marvelous Wonderettes” is complemented by extensive education and outreach programs.
