Berkshire Print Shop Opens on West Street By Mary Ann White

On Friday, Nov. 14 an old business closed and a new one opened on West Street, Pittsfield. An era ended when American Speedy Printing under the management for the past 20 years of Jean Haywood closed and reopened under the name of Berkshire Print Shop, under the ownership of Greta Valuski. Greta bought all the equipment that was in the building and is updating some of it through McFarlane Office Equipment. Jean will be retiring after her many years in the printing business and is very happy that Greta, who has worked for her for the past two years, will carry on. “God was at my shoulder,” Jean said.

Greta will carry on with the help of her sister Gaylynn Barcher, who is also a graphic arts graduate. Jeanine Plumer is also working part-time helping with filing and the mailing and Greta’s husband Mark will be handling outside sales. Berkshire Print Shop will still offer all of the services that had been given in the past, including but not limited to, business cards, brochures, flyers, stag tickets, posters, wedding invitations, Xmas cards through catalogs, and placemats. Also offset printing, address stamps, carbonless forms, bindery, and graphic design. “If we can’t do it, we will find someone who can,” Greta said. Also for those who wish to come in and make copies of their own, a copy machine is near the entrance to the shop. Greta has been in the printing industry for over twenty years, including a stint of 13 years at Eagle Printing, and held the position of Graphic Arts Instructor at Taconic High. “Everything was a stepping stone to where I am now,“ Greta said. She added that not everyone would remember the name of the shop, but do remember that there is a print shop on the corner of West Street. Greta enjoys working with her family and has established a good rapport with the customers and the community while working under Jean and in her past printing endeavors. Being a member of the Berkshire Chamber and the Rotary, she wants to be as much a part of the community as Jean was for the past 20 years.

The equipment at Berkshire Print Shop includes a small offset printer, a high-speed black and white copier, a color copier that she is updating, and several computers. Some of the projects done there were for St. Mary’s Church, the Berkshire Jewish Film Festivals, and many local businesses and artists. Greta’s web site is still under construction, as she wants to be part of the process, will be up and running in the near future. Berkshire Print Shop offers free delivery to its customers. “We love that personal touch that the customers were used to getting,” she said. Customers can also enjoy the half hour convenient parking that is available in front of the shop. “It’s small, but it’s fun and nice and there is a lot of knowledge here,” Greta said adding that she planned to work for the next 20 years in her own business. Greta enjoys a challenge and will work to please all her customers. With the advances in technology she is not so limited in what can be done.
