Samskaras for Krishna Bhakti

devotee communities. For this reason, Gopala Bhatta Gosvami wrote the Sat Kriya Sara Dipika in Sanskrit and documented the ceremonial procedures for posterity.

Title: The Values & Ethics of Samskaras – for Parenting & Domestic Prosperity Date: Saturday 28th September, 2013, 10:30am to 4:30pm. Venue: ISKCON London, 10 Soho Street, Seminar Hall.

The rites of a samskara are more important when it serves the values and ethics dictated for that phase of life. Where the values enunciated in a samskara end with the extinguishing of the sacred fire, the rite dies an unfortunate death. Rather, the values treasured in the samskaras have been used by generations to sustain both the individual and global communities. This course aims to provide insights on the values dictated by Lord Krishna in the samskaras relevant for both new and experienced Grihasthas. Teachers, mentors, advisers and councilors will gain useful insights to aid them in the art of parenting.

Course Introduction: The science of samskaras are prominently placed in the Vedic tradition of Gaudiya Vaisnavism. While establishing the science of Krishna Consciousness, Lord Caitanya deputed Gopala Bhatta Gosvami to document the rites of samskaras to protect the principles of devotion (bhagavad-dharma-rakshartham) for future

Outreach This month was a relatively quiet one for the Outreach team, being utilised mainly to gather resources for the upcoming academic year. The main focus was on preparing presentations, gaining contacts, and planning events for the new term of university programmes, particularly SOAS and Imperial. We also continued to host our regular men’s Friday programme, exploring a range of in-depth philosophical issues in relation to Krishna Consciousness.

Preaching Reports By Madhurya Gaurangi dd

Camden We are getting more and more members. Generally we meet people in the temple, at Matchless Gift’s programmes, or at Sarasvati devi dasi cooking classes. Many of them have taken up chanting, are purchasing and reading Srila Prabhupada’s books, and have started to attend Temple programmes, including morning programme more often. Here we also have started the Bhakti Vriksha system and it turns out very nice - everyone is happy about it and is eagerly awaiting the next week! Devotees are voluntarily giving donations, and therefore all programmes are 100% self-sufficient.

Greenwich There are around 7 attendees, who are enthusiastic to take deeper look into Krishna Consciousness. On Monday 30th September, HG Jai Nitai Prabhu visited our programme and enlightened everyone with an inspiring speech. Following his advice we started to implement Bhakti Vriksa modules with the aim of having a systematic approach in preaching and training. Next week we will begin week 3 - so far it has worked out very well! We have also been receiving some small donations to fund the programmes.

The Spiritual Counsellor System Counselee Retreat: “Mind - the best friend or worst enemy?”

The remainder of the retreat focused on one aspect of the theme, which all activities, workshops, lila kirtan and readings during the day were centred around.

On 31st August to 3rd September, a spiritual counselee retreat in Scotland took place, hosted by Gaura Kishore dasa and Saumya Radhika devi dasi’s group. Here is a report by an attendee, Bhaktin Shiny.

Day two was entitled sambhandha, and we focused on how to recognise the enemies of the mind and understand how to relate to the mind and others. The themed class was based on the six enemies of the mind: kāma, krodha, mada, moha, bhaya, mātsarya (lust, greed, anger, madness, illusion and envy) and we took insights from Srimad Bhagavatam 5.6.2-5. Day three was about abhidaya - what happens if we follow the mind compared to following the process of buddhi yoga

The retreat was a welcome break from the city hustle to the scenic farmland in Glasgow. The retreat focused on how to engage the mind positively in Krishna Consciousness and purify it. It spanned over four days, and the first day was about setting the scene for the retreat and understanding how we can truly benefit from being together. We shared our personal obstacles within the mind and made a sankalpa on what we would like to gain from the retreat. We were warmly welcomed by the devotees of Karuna Bhavan, soon after the darshan of the Deities, Kodanitai Prabhu kindly gave us a tour of the Temple farmlands.

Day four was prayojana - fixing our goal, making our sankalpa and deepening our friendships. There was lila kirtan in the evening by Radha Londonisvara dasa. .

“Garland of Jivas”

Annual Volunteers Dinner Report by Bhaktin Mina On Saturday 28 September, a quiet corner of Mayfair was transformed into a vibrant spiritual hub, with around 300 volunteers from all walks of life attending a spectacular event to celebrate the work of each and every one in serving their Lordships Sri Sri Radha-Londonisvara. Hosted at the home of long time devotee and supporter Anil Agarwal, the event kicked off with the joyous sound of kirtan performed by Gopibhava devi dasi and Shyam dasa. Devotees were then treated to a sumptuous feast prepared by Bhakta Thiru and his incredibly talented team, who worked tirelessly until 3am to get the prasadam ready for the event. This was the very first time that a Thai style menu had been served - the tofu green curry, spring roll squares and gulab jamuns were an instant hit. After dinner, a drama production of Kailash was performed by Maha Nrsingha dasa and Parama Sundari devi dasi’s counsellee group. This is said to be one of Srila Prabhupada’s favourite dramas, which followed the life of a soul called Kailash who never seemed to have the time to chant the holy name in human, dog or snake form. Trapped in a miserable cycle of rebirth, he pleads for help from Narada Muni, who instructs him to chant the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra, as this is the only way to re-establish our relationship with the Supreme Lord and to escape from the clutches of the material world.

One of the highlights of the evening was the keynote address by HH Keshava Bharata Goswami, who ruminated on the theme of the evening, the Garland of Jivas, and the purpose of devotional life being about adding to Krishna’s family. He spoke about how all living beings are our family and ultimately the children of Krishna. Devotees have an important role to bring people towards Krishna, and should do so with affection, because ultimately “every living being is a devotee in their heart... the love of Krishna is in the heart of every living being.” The evening concluded with a blissful lila kirtan performed by Radha Londonisvara dasa and his Mandali team, and as a sign of appreciation for their service, all ISKCON London volunteers were gifted a T-shirt, which featured a fitting and inspiring quote from Srila Prabhupada which read: “Bhakti means devotional service”.

Radhastami Report by Bhaktin Palika in the morning, myself and others started our journey online at www.mayapur.tv/london.

Friday 13th September, Radhastami, the day of of Srimati Radharani’s birthday was celebrated by devotees all over the globe. So what is so special about this day? This is the only day where absolutely anyone and everyone can take darshan of Srimati Radharani’s lotus feet.

When I arrived at the temple at 3.30pm the atmosphere was so incredible - the smell of fresh flowers, incense and the sound of congregational bhajans and kirtans. While congregational chanting and bhajans were done inside, some devotees took the holy name out on the streets of Soho and Oxford Street.

Here at ISKCON London, Radhastami was celebrated with lots of kirtan, dramas, presentations, prasadam, abhishek and of course the Darshan of Radharani’s Lotus Feet. While many came to the temple Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

The Deities from morning wore a multi-coloured flower outfit made by some of the devotees in the temple. At 4pm there was an Abhishek with Kirtans led by HG Radha Londonishvara dasa and then soon after a class by Madhura Gaurangi devi dasi, and drama performance by the Radha Krishna drama group which depicted the pastimes of Radharani. A drama/presentation was also done by Shyamananda dasa who showed us in a clever style the importance of chanting the Holy names of Sri Krishna.

Soon after ecstatic kirtans started which made most people get up and dance for the much awaited darshan of Srimati Radharani’s lotus feet. 9pm stuck and the curtains opened, and at that time it felt like a wave of mercy just flooded the room. Everything just seemed a little bit sweeter. Lining up to go up close to take darshan, the sight was unforgettable, Srimati Radharani’s skirt just lifted ever so slightly so Her feet were shown for all to take darshan. And not only did we all get to see Her lotus feet, Her personal sandals were placed on our heads! It was a truly blissful day for people that came to the temple and for those who joined the celebrations online. 15

GBC Resolutions / Statements The following are important communications coming from our GBC (Governing Body Commission). It is important that you take the time to read the following fully and if you have any questions please direct them to your local Temple\ Centre\Community leadership.

303. GBC Statement on the Position of Srila Prabhupada

da, the guru parampara, one’s diksa guru, other siksa gurus, the Holy Name, sastra, and the nine processes of devotional service.

Whereas there is a need to clarify within our society, via a succinct statement, Srila Prabhupada’s preeminent position in relationship to diksa and siksa gurus as well as all ISKCON members, and to provide clarity on the function and position of diksa and siksa gurus in the ISKCON society:

Within these cooperative elements, Srila Prabhupada, as the Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, is the preeminent guru for all members of ISKCON. All members of ISKCON, for all generations, are encouraged to seek shelter of Srila Prabhupada. All members of ISKCON are entitled and encouraged to have a personal relationship with Srila Prabhupada through his books, teachings, service, and his ISKCON society.

RESOLVED: That the GBC endorses the following statement:

All members accepting leadership roles within ISKCON, including diksa gurus and siksa gurus, have the duty of serving together under ISKCON’s Governing Body Commission (GBC) to fulfill Srila Prabhupada’s instructions as he has given in his books, lectures, and personal communications. [1]

As the Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and the preeminent teacher and ultimate authority within our society, Srila Prabhupada has a unique relationship with every ISKCON devotee.

Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the original guru whose Divine Grace descends through the medium of the guru parampara. As such, a devotee is ultimately delivered by Sri Krishna acting through a combination of various manifestations of His mercy. These include, but are not limited to, the caitya guru, Srila Prabhupa

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Overall, the primary duty of all diksa gurus, siksa gurus, and others in leadership positions, is to assist Srila Prabhupada in his service to his Guru Maharaja Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, and our Brahma Madhva Gaudiya Sampradaya.

Those who accept the service of diksa guru or siksa guru in ISKCON are required to be exemplary in representing Srila Prabhupada’s teaching in their words and personal behavior. The siksa guru gives spiritual instruction and inspiration on behalf of Srila Prabhupada and our guru parampara. The diksa guru gives spiritual instruction, inspiration, formal initiation, a spiritual name, and later imparts the sacred Gayatri mantras to a qualified disciple as a service to Srila Prabhupada and our guru parampara.

This statement, while conclusive, is not exhaustive in its discussion of these principles. The GBC may authorize additional statements and papers in the future to further explain the preeminent position of our Founder-Acarya Srila Prabhupada, the role and responsibilities of those who serve as gurus in our society, and the related duties of ISKCON members and initiates. All GBC members must distribute this resolution to all ISKCON temples, communities and congregations via appropriate means of communication for the education of all ISKCON members. This statement shall also be studied in ISKCON courses including introductory courses, the ISKCON Disciple Course, the Spiritual Leadership Seminar: Being a Guru in ISKCON, and other relevant venues. Reading this statement, and affirming it has been read prior to initiation, shall be part of the test for all prospective initiates.

Srila Prabhupada has clearly explained that devotees who are strictly following the Krsna conscious principles are acting on the liberated platform, and, as such, are pure devotees, even though they may actually not yet be liberated. [2] (Such unalloyed devotional service is not necessarily determined by one’s role or position of service, but by one’s realization.) Those who accept the service of diksa or siksa guru within ISKCON are mandated to be strict followers of the instructions of Srila Prabhupada, and, as long as they follow, they are acting on the liberated platform. Thus they may serve, as Srila Prabhupada ordered, as bona fide representatives of the Lord and the guru parampara and be a via media of their mercy. Yet it should be clearly understood that if such diksa or siksa gurus deviate from strictly following, they may fall down from their position. Thus, to act as a diksa guru in ISKCON means to serve under the GBC and in cooperation with other ISKCON authorities by functioning as a “regular guru” as Srila Prabhupada has directed.

A person who is liberated acharya and guru cannot commit any mistake, but there are persons who are less qualified or not liberated, but still can act as guru and acharya by strictly following the disciplic succession.” Letter to Janardana, 26 April, 1968. And: “We may not be cent percent perfect, but as far as possible, if we follow the instruction as it is, that much perfect. In this way one will get perfection. So one has to follow. Brighton Ratha Yatra The merciful Lordships Sri Jagannatha, Sri Baladeva and Sri Subadra devi were able to visit us in Brighton and Hove again this year for the 12th Ratha Yatra procession. The devotees very kindly drove the Deities from ISKCON Birmingham and the Ratha Yatra team brought a chariot down from Hertfordshire. The Ratha Yatra procession took place on Hove promenade, which is very grand and edged by the beach, and the chariots could be seen from long distances.

Around 200 devotees attended this year, and there were periods of heavy rain at times, but it didn’t stop the Holy Name from being joyfully sung! Food For All brought a great feast for us to enjoy before AND after the procession, which is now a Brighton Ratha Yatra tradition. The last two years we have been blessed by the Mayoress and her husband attending and sweeping the pathway and very happily eating Krishna prasadam with us. Some years we have made it into the local paper ‘The Argus’, and this year there was a great article and editors comment. This has a circulation of around 10,000 copies, so local people were all blessed with Krishna’s name. Our yatra is actually very small with only a handful of initiated devotees and a congregation of about 30, so how we ever hold such a big event like this annually is surely down to the mercy of the Lord and all the devotees who come and cooperate on the day - thanks to you all. ISKCON Education Service (IES) September is a new calendar year for schools, so our programmes have now resumed. We had one programme with Marshwood CofE School from a little village called Marshwood near Bridport, Dorset. This was their second visit. They visit London every two years for a three day trip, visiting museums, churches, the theatre and our Hare Krishna Temple. Helen, the head teacher, accompanies the children, with two other teachers and her husband. The teachers remembered tasty sweets from their previous visit, and they were delighted to receive more! They are looking forward to their next trip in 2 years. Court de Wyck Primary School in Somerset have been kind enough to allow us to share with you some photos from their visit in June 2013. “As soon as one’s service is recognized by Krishna, he is immediately called, “Please come here.” That is the verdict of the Vedic literature. So we should work in such a nice way that we can draw the attention of Krishna to call us. You will find in Bhagavad-gita that anyone who takes the task of preaching Krishna Consciousness is the dearmost devotee of the Lord” (Srila Prabhupada, Letter to Tamala Krsna, New Vrindaban, 1 June, 1969)
