SALAAH Aisha radhiallahu anha relates that the Prophet used to stand so long in the night prayer that his feet used to get swollen. She asked him why he went to such great lengths whereas he was guaranteed forgiveness by Allah.

QURAN Uthman radhiallahu anhu demonstrated what it meant to go beyond what is required in reciting the Words of Allah: He used to recite an entire Quran every day.

His love for the Quran was such, that he was rewarded with being the one to preserve the script of the Quran and he was assassinated while reading the Quran.

BUSINESS Suhaib radhiallahu anhu, on being accosted by the Quraish when emigrating to Madinah for the sake of Allah, disclosed the location of all his wealth to the Quraish to be allowed to make the Hijra (emigration).

IRAQ - Iraq's Shia government asks for US to launch air strikes against Sunni fighters who have seized several key cities over the past week. Sunni fighterslaunched an attack on Iraq's biggest oil refinery. ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) and its Sunni Muslim allies took Iraq's second city, Mosul and are 60 kilometres from Baghdad. Shia Iran is providing military support to the Iraqi government.

(BBC, 18 June) LIBYA - Libya condemned an illegal US military operation to capture the suspected leader ofa raid on a US diplomatic post in Benghazi in 2012. The secret operation on 15 June near Benghazi was an infringement on Libya's sovereignty. (BBC, 18 June) KENYA - Several people have been arrested over this week's deadly attacks on Kenya's coast. 60 people were killed in two days of attacks in Mpeketoni.

President Kenyatta has denied al-Shabab's claim to be behind the raids and has blamed local political groups. Al-Shabab has said it was behind both attacks, in revenge for the presence of Kenyan troops in Somalia and the killing of Muslims. Kenya sent troops to Somalia in 2011 to help the weak UNbacked government. (BBC, 18 June) PAKISTAN - Twitter has unblocked access to dozens of accounts and specific tweets that it had made unavailable in Pakistan because they mocked Islam.

While Twitter has dropped its Pakistan-imposed blocks, other country-specific bans remain in place, including: Restrictions in Germany against a neoNazi account, a ban in France against a series of homophobic tweets, censorship in India of claims that a soft drinks company had distributed contaminated

products. (BBC, 18 June) SRI LANKA - Renewed violence headed by hardline Buddhist monks has flared in southern Sri Lanka as the number of Muslims killed rose to four. Dozens of Muslim businesses and homes were attacked despite a curfew. Three Muslims died after an antiMuslim rally by the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), an extremist Buddhist group. Many of the attacks on homes and businesses took place in the village of Welipenna, near Aluthgama. There have also been reports of attacks on Muslim businesses in two other towns elsewhere in the south. Three Muslims were shot dead amidst clashes with hard-line Buddhists.

Reports from Aluthgama say Muslim residents are running out of food because of a curfew and a blockade by Buddhist extremists. For the past couple of years, Sinhalese Buddhist groups have been staging demonstrations heavily laden with anti-Muslim rhetoric, usually led by monks. (BBC, 18 June) PALESTINE - Jewish troops arrested another 65 Palestinians, including 51 freed in a 2011 prisoner swap, as they search for three missing Jewish teenagers. The total number of Palestinians detained is now 240. Troops raided institutions that provide civilian support for Hamas, including its radio station, al-Aqsa, which has offices in Ramallah and Hebron.

Computers and documents were seized. A unity government supported by Hamas was formed this month, replacing the rival administrations in the West Bank and Gaza. (BBC, 18 June)

"The month of Ramadan to the other months is like Yusuf to his brothers. So, just like Yusuf was the most beloved son to Ya'qub , Ramadan is likewise the most beloved month to Allah.

A nice point for the nation of Prophet Muhammad to ponder over is that if Yusuf had the mercy and compassion to say: "There is no reproach for you today..." [Yusuf: 92], Ramadan is likewise the month of mercy, blessing, goodness, salvation from the Fire, and Forgiveness from the King that exceeds that of all the other months and what can be gained from their days and nights.

Another nice point to think about is that Yusuf 's brothers came to rely on him to fix their mistakes after all those they had made. So, he met them with kindness and helped them out, and he fed them while they were hungry and allowed them to return, and he told his servants: "Carry their belongings with you so that they don't lose them." So, one person filled the gaps of eleven others, and the month of Ramadan is likewise one month that fills the gaps of our actions over the other eleven months. Imagine the gaps and shortcoming and deficiency we have in obeying Allah!�

We hope that in Ramadan, we are able to make up for our shortcomings in the other months, to rectify our mistakes, and to cap it off with happiness and firmness on the Rope of the Forgiving King.

There are several interactive models on display at the museum, which include Masjid un Nabawi , the blessed city of Madina after 7 years of migration from Makkah in Saudi Arabia and also a cross section of the holy Ka’ba.

The interactive models like the blessed City of Madina have buttons, which when pressed lights up positions on the model which indicate the areas where the homes of Prophet Muhammad , Khalid Bin Waleed and many other prominent Sahaba were located and lived.

Another interactive model lights up the various pillars in Masjid un Nabawi , like Ustuwaanah Hannanah (the weeping pillar), Ustuwaanah Aisha and many others.

The museum also houses archery equipment and there are plans to start a Qu’ran section which will display very old Qur’ans and even handwritten Qur’ans.

www.shafiifiqh.com Q: When does Kaffarah become compulsory upon a person?

A: Kaffarah means to fast 60 days consecutively. This becomes compulsory when a person deliberately has sexual intercourse during the day in Ramadaan while fasting.

Q: There is a website which claims that there is a difference of opinion about whether people can act as any of the Prophets in movies, whether the Holy Prophet Muhammed Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, or other Prophets. Is this true?

A: Shaykh Ibrahim al-Bajuri said, “Believing that the outward qualities that were manifest in the body of the Prophet have never been manifest in another, this is from the intactness of faith.

And with that, it was never displayed from him entirely; as if it was, eyes would not have been able to bear seeing him .” (alMawahib al-Luduniyyah 34)

In Ghayat al-Sul 294, Ibn alMulaqqin mentioned that according to the vast majority of scholars, to intentionally falsify something regarding the Nabi is a major sin, and the minority who maintained a differing view, like Shaykh Abu Muhammad alJuwayni, said it is disbelief.

Q: According to the Shafis, is Khula (wife claiming divorce in lieu of money) a form of divorce?

And if so is the iddah the same as a Talaq (three periods of purity between menstrual cycles)?

A: In his Jami 3:318-19, Imam Tirmidhi related two views: (1) it is like an iddah after a talaq (2) and that it is just one period. In regards to the second view, he cited Ishaq ibn Rahaway as saying, “And if one takes this view, he has taken a strong opinion.”

One major problem in this is that any actor who would portray the Prophet Muhammad would not be able to resemble him in truth, and the Prophet said, “Whosoever intentionally lies regarding me, so let him take his place in Hell.”

Here, falsifying details regarding the Prophets (alayhium al-salam) goes beyond how historically accurate a movie was regarding events in their lives, and it includes their very beings Islamic Focus

being portrayed by an actor.

It is impossible for anyone to accurately portray a Prophet; the difference between one with the light of Prophethood and one without needs no explanation. It is unlawful.

The hadith in Bukhari 3:406 clearly states that khula is a form of divorce. And when it is established that it is a divorce, then the iddah is mentioned in Surah alBaqarah: 228, “And divorced women shall wait for three periods…” The Shafi view maintains that her iddah is like an iddah after a divorce.

Q: There is an imam in the United States who is per-

mitting homosexuality and the marriage between two men. He says it is lawful in Islam, what is the ruling?

A: In Islam, homosexuality is unlawful without a doubt.

Any individual who says it is permissible has left the fold of Islam. This ruling is stated in Kifayat al-Akhyar pg. 630, and other scholars related it too.

Q: In the Shaafi school is it permissible for the son of a lady who was previously married to be her wali if she has no father, grandfather or any relatives from her father’s side?

A: If a woman’s son is connected to her only by the bond of being her child, then he cannot act as her guardian and marry her off. If another connection between them is established, then he may according to that. An example of this is them sharing in lineage by him being both her son and also the son of her uncle’s son; or if he was the judge.

The right of guardianship is one established by lineage, and a woman’s lineage goes back to her father and his family; while her son’s lineage is traced through his father.

This is the Shafi position on the matter. The other 3 Schools and Imam Shafi’s student, Imam Muzani, maintained that a woman’s son may act as her wali.

www.askimam.org | www.askmufti.co.za | www.daruliftaa.net Q: Is it permissible to add verses of Quran in a story book? This is not entirely an Islamic book and is open for non Muslims to purchase. The verses will be in English.

A: Whilst the Qur’ān is a means of guidance for the entire humanity and nonMuslims too may benefit from its verses and teachings, maintaining the respect of the Qur’ān is equally necessary. Hence, one should avoid any such scenario, which jeopardises the respect of the Qur’ān. One can only allow a non-Muslim access to the verses of the Qur’ān if he is certain that they will be respected and revered.

As such, it would be in appropriate to add verses of the Qur’ān, whether in Arabic or English, in a storybook that is meant for a general readership, due to the high possibility of it leading to disrespect.

As an alternative we suggest that the general understanding of the verses of the Qur’ān and the message contained in them be presented in the book rather than quoting the Qur’ān or its translation verbatim.

Q: Are there any mawdū (fabricated) hadith in the authentic collections of hadith?

A: The issue of Sahīh (authentic), Hasan (reliable), Daeef (weak) and Mawdū (fabricated) Ahādīth is an academic one and may not be Islamic Focus

understood by those who are not versed in the sciences of Sharī’ah especially those of Hadīth. These books are meant for Ulamā who have the knowledge to differentiate between such narrations.

If a non-‘Ālim is reading a Hadīth book and he comes across such narrations, or he has heard a particular narration and needs clarification on its authenticity, he should refer to an ‘Ālim having expertise in Hadith for confirmation.

Q: Is there any sin if I miss my Sunnahs which are Muakkadah?

A: Yes, one will be sinful if he misses out a Sunnah e Muakadah.

Q: What is the proper way to write Inshallah, Insha'Allah or In Shaa Allah?

A: Transliteration is to change letters, words, etc. into corresponding letters or alphabets of another language. This is done to facilitate for those unfamiliar with the transliterated language, or merely for purposes of ease when writing in another language. Writing “insha Allah” in various forms is to fulfil this same purpose.

Furthermore, the rules of Arabic to English transliteration are not standardized. Every writer transliterates opting to convey the most accurate pronunciation in his opinion.

As such, he spaces, combines, capitalizes letters and words as he deems appropriate. Hence, whether a person

combines the entire phrase, “inshallah,” or puts one or two spaces, “insha Allah” “in sha Allah,” all these forms are permissible.

This point is even clearer to those who have researched the transformation of the Arabic writing style (or any language for that matter) throughout the ages. In every era, scribes wrote Quran and Hadith based on the style prevalent in their age and society. The same applies to the usage of diacritical marks and dots. If the permissibility of variant styles in Arabic was never contested in the history of Islam, why then should varying transliterations be contested?

Q: My friend and I constructed a house with the intention to sell if off in future and get profit out of it. The house is ready but not yet sold. Do i need to pay zakat on this house?

A: If the house in question was constructed with the intention of resale, then it will be mandatory to pay zakāh on 2.5% of the current market value of the house. As long as the house remains in your possession, you must pay zakāh for the house at the end of each year (according to the Lunar/ Islamic calendar).

The judge asked the farmer if he was using any measure. The farmer replied: “I am primitive. I don't have a proper measure, but I do have a scale." The judge asked, "Then how do you weigh the butter?" The farmer replied "Long before the baker started buying butter from me, I have been buying a pound loaf of bread from him. Every day when the baker brings the bread, I put it on the scale and give him the same weight in butter. If anyone is to be blamed, it is the baker."

To gain the maximum from the month of Ramadaan, the quality of enthusiasm will hold us in good stead.

The Cape Malays introduced many food items into South Africa’s cuisine. Among them are the following:

We need to approach the worship of Ramadaan with enthusiasm, joy and excitement.

Pickled fish. The favourite food eaten at Easter time together with Hot Cross Buns.

The recipe was originally devised by Cape Malay fishermen in an effort to preserve the catch for as long as possible.

Bayhaqi has related in al-Sunan [2:496] - "In the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab radiallahu anhu they would perform 20 rakaats in the month of Ramadan. He said (also): And they would recite the Mi'in (A group of medium sized chapters from the Qur'an), and they would lean on their sticks in the time of Uthman ibn Affan, radiallahu anhu, from the discomfort of standing."

In the time of Umar radhiallahu anhu the Taraweeh used to be so long that the people just about had time to go home, eat sehri and go back to the Musjid for Fajr.

Koeksister. Or koe'sister derives from the Dutch word koekje, which translates to "cookie". One version of this South African syrup-coated doughnut is the Cape Malay version which is a spicy treat finished off with a sprinkling of coconut. It is prepared by deepfrying plaited dough rolls in oil, then dipping the fried dough into cold sugar syrup. Koeksisters are very sticky and sweet and taste like honey.

Tomato bredie. A South African stew, referred to in Afrikaans as 'tamatiebredie', normally made with mutton, is cooked for a very long time, and its seasonings include cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and cloves as well as chilli. It is of Dutch origin and introduced to South Africa by Cape Malays. "Bredie" is the Afrikaans word for "stew", but is actually a word of Malaysian origin. This form of cooking was first introduced to the Cape by Malays, who were brought to the colony in most cases as slaves. The word bredie refers to oriental spinach. In tomato bredie tomato is used instead. Pumpkin, green beans and waterblommetjies (Cape water lily flowers) are also used. This traditional South African dish is commonly eaten around South Africa by both locals and tourists.

He was born in Rusçuk (present day Bulgaria).

His family moved to Istanbul in 1878. He joined the War Academy and in 1888 graduated. His first posting was on the border with Armenia. In 1908 he came to Istanbul. 1911– 12 he was sent to Libya and when the Balkan War broke out, he was a commander at Gallipoli. He captured Adrianople from Bulgaria.

In 1914 he was appointed a commander in Mosul, Iraq. He was then appointed Deputy Commander in Aleppo, Syria. In World War I, Fakhruddin moved towards Madinah in 1916 to defend it. He was besieged by Arab rebels but defended Madinah and protected the Hejaz Railway. With the surrender of the Ottoman Empire in 1918, he refused to surrender Madinah. He also refused to hand over his sword even upon the receipt of a direct order from the Ottoman minister of war. Sultan Mehmed VI dismissed him from his post. He refused to do so and kept the Sultan’s flag high in Madina until 72 days after the end of the war.

He was arrested by his own men in 1919 and brought to the military barracks at Cairo, Egypt. He lived as a prisoner of war for two years in Malta until 1921. After his release he joined the Turkish forces and fought against the Greek and French armies in Anatolia. He became Turkey's ambassador to Afghanistan 1922-1926. In 1936, he was promoted to major general and retired from the army. He died in 1948 in Istanbul.

Father was a hardworking man who delivered bread to support his wife and three children.

He spent all his evenings after work attending classes, hoping to improve himself so that he could one day find a better paying job. Except for Sundays, Father hardly ate a meal together with his family. He worked and studied very hard because he wanted to provide his family with the best money could buy.

Whenever the family complained he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned he was doing all this for them. Father passed, with distinctions. He was offered a good job as a senior supervisor which paid handsomely.

Father could now afford to provide his family with life’s little luxuries. However, the family still did not get to see him for most of the week. He continued to work very hard, hoping to be promoted to manager. He enrolled for another course in the open university.

Father’s hard work paid off and he was promoted. He hired a maid and they moved to a bigger house. Father resolved to further his studies and work at being promoted again.

The family still did not get to see much of him.

As expected, Father’s hard work paid off again and he bought a beautiful condominium overlooking the coast of Singapore. On the first Sunday evening at their new home, Father declared to his family that he decided not to take anymore courses or pursue any more promotions. From then on he was going to devote more time to his family.

Father did not wake up the next day.

BIOGRAPHY / INSPIRATION

Fakhruddin Pasha (1868–1948), was a commander of Ottoman army and governor of Madina from 1916-1919. He was nicknamed "Lion of the Desert" for defending Madinah.

HISTORY / TECHNOLOGY

Islam is Brunei's official religion, 64% is Muslim. Most are Malays, Kedayans and Chinese.

Islam was adopted in the 15th century when Sultan Awang Alak Betatar (Sultan Muhammad Shah) converted to Islam. The same family has ruled Brunei for six centuries until today. Malays converted to Islam in the 13th century with the arrival of Arab, Indian and Chinese Muslim traders.

Since the 1930s sultans have used oil revenues to provide an extensive social welfare system and promote Islam, including subsidizing the Hajj, building mosques, and expanding the Department of Religious Affairs.

In the 15th century, Islam flourished in the Malay world under Muslim Sultanates. The Brunei Sultanate (1363–present) was growing into a trading port that rivalled Malacca. Brunei reached its golden age in the 16th century when it controlled land as far south as Kuching in Sarawak and north towards Philippines.

Sultan Bolkiah (reigned 1485–1528) controlled northern Borneo as well as the Sulu archipelago off Borneo, modern-day Manila, and the islands off northwest Borneo. Brunei fought against Spain in 1578's Castille War. In 1888 Brunei became a British protectorate.

It regained independence in 1984. In 2011 Brunei was one of two countries (the other being Libya) with a public debt at 0%. Brunei is the fifth-richest nation out of 182.

Islamic law in Brunei supersedes civil law and it regulates all of life. The Sultan began implement the Islamic penal code in 2014.

Juan worked at a meat distribution factory.

One day, when he finished with his work schedule, he went into the meat cold room to inspect something, but the door closed and he was locked inside with no help in sight.

Although he screamed and knocked, his cries went unheard. Most of the workers had already gone, and outside the cold room it's impossible to hear what was going on inside.

Five hours later, when Juan was on the verge of death, the security guard of the factory eventually opened the door and saved Juan's life.

Juan asked the security guard how he got to open the door, as it wasn't part of his work routine, and he explained: "I've been working in this factory for 35 years, hundreds of workers come in and out every day, but you're one of the few who greets me in the morning and says goodbye to me every night. Many treat me as if I am invisible.

Today you greeted me at the entrance when resuming work. But curiously I observed I've not heard your 'Bye! See you tomorrow'. I decided to check around the factory. I look forward to your 'Hi' and 'bye' every day. To you, I am someone. By not hearing your farewell, I knew something had happened. Then I looked and found you!

Be humble, love and respect those around you. Try to have an impact on people. Someone seemingly insignificant today could be the only help you can get tomorrow.
