While we empathize with the suffering of the people of Haiti, and while we do not pass judgement on others, nevertheless as Muslims we take the opportunity offered by the disaster to take stock of our lives. DESTRUCTION The Quraan (42:30) sums up the reasons for our suffering: Whatever misfortune happens to you, it is because of the things your hands have earned, and for many of them He (Allah) grants forgiveness. Many nations of the past were destroyed in hurricanes, by drowning and being swallowed up by the earth. ued their lives of disobedience until they were next. CHANGE The disaster of Haiti should not just be another calamity for us to read about. We should look beyond and do some soul searching; what are we doing wrong that could call down the anger of Allah upon us? The Quraan tells us that the reason we are made to undergo suffering is so that we may realize the folly of our ways and turn away from evil and sin. (Quraan 30:41) Yet other verses say that Allah sent trials and adversity to the people of the past so that they may be humble. (Quraan 6:41) The Quraan says: What concern has Allah for your punishment if you are thankful

(for His mercies) and believe (in Him)? (Quraan 4:147) If we sincerely try to please Allah and shun a lifestyle that displeases Him, we have a better chance of enjoying a good life. If calamities still come, we will be able to face them with patience and fortitude. PRESCRIPTION Hazrat Aeysha mentioned the cause of earthquakes is when adultery, drinking wine, singing, dancing and the use of various types of musical instruments become common and fashionable among people. (Fataawa Raheemiyah, 3:207) Drought and famine will become frequent when Muslims, among other things, start hating the Ulama.
