Crisis Background In October 2020, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states saw very heavy rainfall resulting in dangerous flooding throughout the city of Hyderabad. This was classified as the worst flooding witnessed since 1908 in this region, overwhelming 116 colonies/slums and affecting over 240,000 people. Due to the torrential rain, flash floods caused the overflowing of bridges, damaged agricultural fields, drowned over 11,950 farm animals, and destroyed over 20,540 homes. India as a whole was battling the pandemic, which compounded the vulnerability of all urban areas, marginalized communities, people living in low-lying areas, informal settlements, and the numerous slums in Hyderabad city. Various other regions were hit by the effects of the heavy rain, but Hyderabad’s high density caused increased damages relative to other districts. Covid-19 had severely affected the livelihood opportunities of vulnerable and marginalized families living in slums and low-income housing in Hyderabad. The vast majority of them worked in the informal sector, as migrant labourers, rag pickers, autorickshaw drivers, domestic helpers, local craftsmen, and homeless people. These marginalized individuals had already lost their livelihoods due to the pandemic, with the floods only

exacerbating their conditions further, causing detrimental food insecurity. With the additional financial burden of moving into newly rented homes, searching for employment, and replacing damaged household items, families are more vulnerable to hunger and malnourishment as they borrow money to avoid starvation. The living conditions in the slums also increase the risk of disease exposure and exploitative situations for vulnerable children. Prior to the floods in Telangana state, 30% of children below 4 years were underweight, 29.3% of children under the age of five were stunted and 49.8% of pregnant women were anemic, which worsened as the floods made food and nutrition sources inaccessible.

Our Work in the Region

Islamic Relief has been on the ground in India since 1994, and to date has reached over 165,535 individuals through our programs across the country. We work predominantly through local partners to address needs such as emergency relief, water, living essentials, and development. India is one of the most disasterprone countries in terms of the number of disasters, people affected, and related mortality and economic

damages. Droughts, cyclones and floods often destroy or damage shelter, infrastructure and livelihoods and have a long-lasting impact on affected populations. Throughout the past year, Islamic Relief responded to numerous floods through the provision of food and water and sanitation hygiene. We implement development programming in India by establishing schools in rural villages and supporting livelihood

opportunities for female-headed households, including survivors of gender-based violence. Through increasing income generation, vulnerable households are better enabled to access shelter, healthcare, protection, education, and food. Currently, Islamic Relief Canada donors support 489 orphans in India through the Orphan Sponsorship Program.

Emergency Hyderabad Flood Response 2020 This project was implemented in response to the flooding in Hyderabad and aimed to address the food insecurity that countless families faced due to this crisis. Islamic Relief provided the nutritional needs of the families staying in slums, reaching over 11,760 individuals. This was specifically in the slums of the old city of Hyderabad, in the district of Telangana. We distributed food kits that included kitchen staples to ensure households were fed as they recuperated from the drastic aftermath of the flooding.

Each family received 10kg of high-quality rice, 10 kg of wheat, 3 kg different varieties of pulses, 2 litres of refined cooking oil, 100 grams each of chilli & turmeric powder, 500 grams of peanuts and 500 grams of dates. Beneficiaries were selected by Islamic Relief, with priority given to minority communities, women-headed households, households with widows, pregnant women, orphans, people with chronic illnesses, and people with disabilities. all their assets destroyed and had no food. They were stuck in the floods for days where their only means of survival was food packets distributed by local volunteers, which were insufficient for the whole family. The following days, Jahageer recalls, as “some of the toughest times of his life.”

The flood broke them. They managed to secure some of their assets but being a person living with disabilities, Md. Jahageer could not do much to secure their home. The family had no money, had

The family was visited by the volunteers surveying the region. Volunteers listened to the struggles they had faced and how they survived. They verified the condition of their house and took their details.

Md. Jahageer then received a call from Islamic Relief’s implementation partner and was asked to come to collect his relief kit. The family was overjoyed just by the news, they received one full month’s rations, which was no less than a blessing to them. Md. Jahageer exclaimed, “When I received the call, I was just praying to God to send His divine help as we have no one to help us. You were sent to us from God.”
