Introduction Who We Are Islamic Relief works in over 40 countries worldwide, providing life-saving humanitarian aid to those in need, and fighting poverty through sustainable development projects. Inspired by faith, we serve everyone in need regardless of gender, race or religion. We help impoverished communities access basic services, including education, water, sanitation, and healthcare. Through livelihood projects, skills development and mentorship, we help communities break the cycle of poverty. Our integrated approach to progress helps transform lives worldwide.

Meet the board

Dr. Hanny El-Banna, O.B.E, M.D.

MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Dr. El Tantawy Attia worked in the Reactor Physics and Nuclear Analysis Departments of the Ontario Power General for more than 27 years before retiring in 2003. Dr. Attia has been an active member of the Muslim community, previously serving as President of the Muslim Investment Group and the Canadian Islamic Trust Foundation. He also currently serves as the Executive Director of Toronto Masjid.

Naseem Mithoowani is a practicing lawyer in the GTA, along with serving as an Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, and as a parttime adjudicator at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. She is known for her courageous and bold approach to challenge the treatment of minorities in Canada and has won high-profile legal cases in recent years. In addition to the exemplary legal work that she does defending minorities and underrepresented communities, she is also an active member of several community, political and religious organizations.

Dr. Raza Khan was trained at the University of Toronto (MD) and performed his residency at the University of Ottawa in family medicine. His full-time practice is in Brantford, Ontario where he has been practicing in family medicine since 1997. In addition, he also serves as a Director and Spokesperson for the Muslim Association of Hamilton, President of the Muslim Association of Brantford, as well as the past ViceChair of the Canadian Relief Foundation.

Dr. Hany El Banna was the founder and President of Islamic Relief Worldwide, since he stepped down from IRW he has also founded several charities including the Humanitarian Forum, and the Muslim Charities Forum. He is also a board member of the Center for Interfaith Action on Global Poverty (CIFA). He has visited over 60 of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable countries on behalf of these organizations. He originally trained in medicine, both in Egypt and the UK. Dr. El Banna has been with Islamic Relief Canada since its incorporation in 2005, serving as the chairman.

Afnan Attia is currently the Director of Corporate Development and Strategy at Morneau Shepell, an HR services company based out of Toronto, Canada. She graduated from the Schulich School of Business at York University with a Bachelor of Business Administration. Afnan has volunteered with various Islamic notfor-profit organizations, and in addition to joining the Board, Afnan has recently co-founded The Female Finance Project, a not-for-profit that is dedicated to offering financial education and empowerment for women.

Dr. Aarif Pathan was a staff physician in the Department of Internal Medicine at William Osler Health Corporation in Toronto from 2003 to 2008 before returning to Edmonton where he has been practicing Family Medicine in private practice. He is dedicated to promoting healthcare in underprivileged communities in Edmonton. A longtime donor and volunteer for Islamic Relief, he also has a passion for mentorship and has coached community league soccer and basketball.

Ebad Rahman obtained his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science prior to that. He is currently a practicing lawyer specializing in corporate/ commercial matters. Ebad has been a member of Islamic Relief Canada’s board since 2016.

Dr. Hany Soliman is a Radiation Oncologist and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. He is actively involved in medical research and education. He was brought up in the Toronto area and has a bachelor of science and medical degree from the University of Toronto. He has been involved in the Muslim community at a grassroots level and has a passion for charitable work.

CEO Reflections Farewell Alhamdulillah, it’s been my absolute privilege and honour to serve our community through Islamic Relief Canada over the last 10 years. As I reflect back on the last decade, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed by the increasing level of need. The fractious nature of the disasters that have affected the most vulnerable communities is daunting. Hate, greed and malevolence seem to be abundant in the corridors and palaces of the powerful. It would be easy for anyone to despair and reach the false conclusion that there is no answer to so much suffering. However, our Islamic values and the divine instruction from our Lord compels us to respond with positive energy and never give in to despair.

Working together to respond with compassion and virtue is the only answer to suffering for those who believe in a kinder, fairer world. Islamic Relief Canada is an amazing reflection of our community’s commitment to doing just that. Collectively, we have built the largest Muslim institution in Canada, I’m humbled by the efforts of so many Canadian Muslims who have rallied together to answer the call. From every corner of our community, mosque leaders, activists, professionals, workers, mothers and children have made it their mission to do good with Islamic Relief Canada. Our new CEO, Usama Khan, the Board, and the leadership of Islamic Relief Canada are all razor-focused on building our collective capacity to respond to the most pressing challenges. The effects of the climate catastrophe, racism, hatred, gender-based violence and inequality, all have a heartbreaking effect on the world’s most vulnerable. But together, with Islamic Relief Canada, we will continue to do our duty and tackle the challenges head-on. This way we can meet our Lord and inshaAllah say, we did the best we could. That’s all we are ever responsible for, doing our best. Thank you for everything you do to help us support the most vulnerable communities both locally and globally. Canadian Muslims have continued to trust us with their Zakat and donations to help millions of people around the world through providing life-saving aid, long-term solutions that break the cycle of poverty, and advocacy for issues that matter most to the people we serve. As our global village transitions to a semblance of normalcy after a few difficult years of so much loss – both of lives and livelihoods, of isolation and fear, all of you have stepped up in unprecedented ways to help those in need. Despite the state of our world, all of you chose to answer the call. Sadly, the pandemic and its effects have made inequality worse. Responding in the Face of a Global Pandemic How did the pandemic impact Islamic Relief overall?

What did our Covid-19 response consist of?

The Covid-19 pandemic gave way to extraordinary circumstances over the past two years. As the crisis unfolded, our teams all over the world quickly pivoted to prioritize safety, protection and assistance for those who were most vulnerable.

Starting in 2020, we delivered hygiene essentials to vulnerable populations, as well as masks, gloves, medical equipment and urgent support to health centres. We helped establish isolation centres and strengthen existing health centres.

In addition to Covid-19 relief responses, we also took care to adjust our work on the ground to account for the exacerbated needs that Covid-19 brought across all other sectors. This meant that for all our larger projects, we continued to integrate components from multiple sectors such as livelihood, protection, and water and sanitation to account for the varied and secondary impacts of the pandemic. This allowed for a more comprehensive Covid-19 approach to help combat the spread of the virus as well as address the impacts of the pandemic as a whole. By the grace of God and because of your support, the pandemic did not slow our resolve to continue our work. Rather it pushed us to become even more creative and work more collaboratively to reach those most in need.

In 2021 as much of the world went through brutal second and third waves, we also helped deliver Covid-19 vaccines to the world’s poorest countries, and provided life-saving supplies, equipment and oxygen to hospitals battling rising cases and climbing death tolls. We worked alongside communities, UN agencies, governments and faith leaders to spread verified messaging on safe practices and protection, through sermons, prayers and messaging via radio, leaflets, posters, and social media. While addressing the primary health impact of Covid-19, we are also protecting against the long term and secondary economic impacts that will continue to affect the most vulnerable in the months and years to come. This means continuing to work across multiple sectors to support children’s education, family livelihoods, orphan sponsorships and the needs of female-headed households.

An Equitable Approach We believe in putting the world’s most vulnerable first, and that an equitable approach is vital to responding to the needs of each community. In collaboration with communities, beneficiaries are chosen using a vulnerability and selection criteria process to ensure we are reaching the individuals and families most in need. The participation of beneficiaries before and during each project ensures that the provided support is specific to their needs.

Putting the Most Vulnerable First How do we consider the needs of particular communities?

How do we practice a community-centred approach?

We understand the respective priorities and vulnerabilities of unique groups, including protection risks and accessibility needs. Our responses prioritize the dignity, safety and unique needs of these individuals and groups to mitigate risks and ensure an equitable approach for all.

Putting each community at the heart of our responses is imperative. This is why we work to ensure that the targeted beneficiary groups are consulted and involved in both the project design and its implementation.

We take steps to consider how the time and location of an aid distribution impacts people differently, ensuring access for disadvantaged groups such as female-headed households or people with disabilities. This means incorporating measures like designated lines for women, transportation support, or door-to-door delivery. Our projects also target host community members, refugee communities, as well as internally displaced communities. We understand the sensitive nature of providing services to refugee communities while supporting the host communities they reside in.

Our responses are rooted in participatory community engagement that considers the needs, barriers, capacities, and opportunities of women, men, girls, and boys. Projects are created in collaboration with communities, where the members of the communities are consulted as they best understand their circumstances. An example of this is directly involving women and girls in the selection of a water well location or bathroom facilities. This supports the unique safety concerns they may face, and facilitates their ability to partake in economic activities and attain a greater quality of life.

A Young Scientist Lamar | 12 years old “When I wear this robe, I feel like a young scientist and this motivates me to strive harder to achieve my dream.” This is Lamar, she’s part of our Empowering Orphans and Vulnerable Children project in Palestine. When we asked her what she thought about being in the program, she couldn’t stop talking! “When I put my eyes on the telescope for the first time in my life, I didn’t want to close them because of the fantastic and accurate details that I saw there. This was not available in my science classes in school, because there is no telescope at our school. This dream came true once I became one of the beneficiaries of this program that’s run by Islamic Relief. We go on educational trips with Islamic Relief, for example, we went on a trip to the university laboratory. And there, we were able to do scientific experiments with the help of some teachers who instructed us.” She then went and shared her experiences with her classmates, who also benefited from her knowledge. “When I went to school the next day, I told my teacher about what I had seen through the telescope when we put the onion slice on it. My teacher was surprised and asked me to explain it to my classmates and to draw it on the board. Students were also surprised and started asking me so much about it. I’m grateful to be one of the lucky persons who are selected to participate in this project.”

Lamar adds with great joy and a big smile, “I learnt how the electrical circuit works, also I learned new things about the animals that I love. That increases my passion for learning.” She fell silent and then continued her speech, “Actually, I have two dreams of becoming a veterinarian, as well as becoming a famous scientist. I want to be a scientist in the area of health to discover a drug for cancer. This will make me happy because I will be able to treat many people all over the world, not only in my community.” This is a prime example of what happens when you give young girls access to all the equipment and experiences they need to fulfill their curiosity.

From Being Widowed to Becoming an Entrepreneur Asiya | 30 years old Asiya was left traumatized after the sudden death of her husband, leaving her as the sole supporter of her four inlaws and two young children. Making ends meet became an impossible task for the young timid widow. Our team on the ground in India identified her as a great candidate for our Sustainable Livelihoods for Single Women in Hyderabad project. This project focuses on improving the living conditions of single women-headed households in the slums of Hyderabad, by increasing their livelihood options Asiya joined our training sessions on cooking and housekeeping but didn’t expect much to come from the training. Overtime she found herself developing confidence and enthusiasm, quickly rising to the top of the class as the most active student, keen on learning and experimenting with ingredients. The training chef took notice of her enthusiasm and asked her to assist during classes, the following year she was selected to be the Assistant Chef in training a new batch of women. From there onwards, Asiya’s spirit soared, her enthusiasm and hard work flourished as she independently managed and trained over 16 women on her own, becoming a head Chef Trainer. Her ambition did not stop there, she launched her own canteen in the local school, providing fresh snacks for children. Long gone was the scared and hesitant young widow, she had overcome her trauma and was standing on her own feet to independently support her family. This is what happens when women are equipped with the tools and training to support themselves, we empower them to build confidence and change their lives. IMPAC T REPOR T 2021

Healing a Resilient Spirit Ahmed | 28 years old When a body suffers immense physical trauma, it is not only the bones that break, the mind is pushed to its limits. 28 year old Ahmed was displaced from his village in Northern Hamam Rural and was residing in Al-Nuri camp when he decided to return to his village to retrieve his personal belongings. He was riding his motorbike when a warplane targeted the area he was in, destroying his home and leaving him injured in the debris. Ahmed fell into a coma for the next month. Doctors at the local Syrian hospital treated him and referred him to a hospital in neighbouring Turkey to continue his treatment. When he woke up in Turkey he was informed of the extent of his injuries, Ahmed had multiple fractures and was suffering from incomplete paralysis of his right side, unable to move. Once his condition stabilized, he was referred to the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Department, an Islamic Relief supported department. Through our project that supports the Rehabilitation Unit in Sarmada, we aim to deliver life saving medical support to the most vulnerable inside Syria. Ahmed was hesitant to respond to treatment due to his psychological condition. However, through continued psychological support and encouragement, he became more comfortable with his treatment plan. Gradually he started moving the right side of his body and was able to begin physical therapy and rehabilitation. Today, Ahmed can move his once paralyzed body without any help or equipment. His resilience, coupled with strong psychosocial support and medical treatments allowed him to slowly heal both his mind and his body.

Clean Water Means a Thriving Business Madina | 45 years old When heavy rainfalls caused flooding and destruction in West Kordofan, Sudan, countless families were left displaced without shelter or access to clean water. The floods destroyed 45 year old Madina’s home. She described the incident, “The flood destroyed my home and all my belongings; it didn’t spare a thing. We were sleeping when the disaster happened, we found water everywhere and heard cries. We rushed outside and took shelter under a plastic sheet. I was scared and hurt. We took shelter under that plastic sheet for ten days.” Islamic Relief recognized the potential danger of damaged water and sanitation facilities. A collapse of latrines resulted in an increase in open defecation, poor hygiene practices, and the spread of water-borne diseases. We responded immediately, rehabilitating water sources and pumps, building and rehabilitating latrines, as well as improving hygiene conditions.

With the newly available water sources, Madina found a way to support her family of 11 people, including her sick husband and daughter. “I started a coffee and tea selling business with the new water availability in the village. Before the new water source, I couldn’t do anything, and now I can provide for my children. I used to go long distances to other villages just to get water.” She is incredibly grateful to Islamic Relief and the donors who have supported water projects in her village. Access to safe water has changed her life, allowing her to create a dignified income and support her vulnerable family. “Thank you very much to the organization, may God bless you with good health and protect you. I would also like to thank the donors, I wish upon them happiness.”

Getting Stronger and Fighting Back Radha | 16 years old “Learning different techniques that I can use to save myself from any incidents related to sexual exploitation, assault or physical violence, is something new and yet a crucial skill that every girl and woman should require”, Radha proudly exclaimed.

Through protection projects, such as this one, we build up the confidence of women, helping them understand the conceptual ideas of violence, causes, and impacts but also teach them crucial skills to defend against such violence.

Radha is a participant in Islamic Relief’s Self-Defence Training for women and adolescent girls, as a part of our Addressing Gender-Based Violence through Socio-Economic Empowerment of Women, Men, and Children in Nepal project. This project aims to reduce gender-based violence, ensuring the protection and promotion of the human rights of women and girls.

Self-defence has boosted Radha’s confidence and she is now inspiring her friends and sisters to also participate in classes, empowering a community.

Radha was overjoyed to attend the local training and activities. She expressed the dire need for self-defence training for girls and women as incidents of sexual exploitation, assault, abuse, and rape increase within Nepal. “I was so excited to get my name registered for the self-defense training and even suggested that my friends from my school and locality attend that training. The training was not simply confined to theoretical classes and sessions, rather it was a blend of understanding the theoretical concepts of self-defense and practicing the skills discussed in the sessions.” For girls like Radha, the risk of sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment is always a threat. Walking to school, completing chores, and all day-to-day activities have a risk in rural areas, where women are more vulnerable due to restricted power, resources, and social class.

She shared her final thoughts with us, “I will certainly continue practicing the skills that I’ve learned, and I will pass it on to others. I will be safe and I will support saving others.”

Emergency Food and Assistance for Rohingya Camps in Bhasan Char

This project is in response to the food insecurity crisis in Afghanistan, which is only further exacerbated by the ongoing instability, war recovery efforts, and natural disasters. Our emergency response improves food security in disaster and conflict affected communities within the Nangarhar and Balkh provinces. We are providing food packages containing household staples that include flour, oil, pulses, rice, sugar, and salt. This project prioritizes vulnerable displaced families, female headed households, people with disabilities, and orphan households.

This emergency response supports thousands of vulnerable displaced people, returnees and host communities in the informal settlement areas of Behsood, Surkhrood, and Khewa Districts, as well as Jalalabad City, across the Nangarhar Province. Through this project, we are installing clean water systems, handwashing points and latrines, as well as distributing water storage, hygiene items and dignity kits. This project is also working to establish community protection mechanisms, with a focus on genderbased violence and child protection training provided for service providers. We are also designing key materials and training community volunteers on menstrual hygiene management awareness.

This emergency response is in aid of Rohingya makeshift camps in Bhasan Char. This project focuses on supporting families in need with food distributions and gas cylinder refills for cooking. We are distributing food packs and gas cylinder refills over the span of 4 months. This response provides the most basic human necessities for refugee families in need.

Emergency Life-Saving Support for Cox’s Bazar Camp Fires In response to the massive fire in Cox’s Bazar that broke out and damaged four camps in the Balukhali Refugee Camp that housed thousands of Rohingya refugees, we provided immediate emergency support to those affected through shelter, WASH and protection efforts. We constructed 16 permanent shelters, bamboo bridges, and repaired 3 roads. In order to maintain the dignity of Rohingya refugees and restore sanitary solutions, we distributed hygiene kits, repaired drainage systems and constructed community sanitary latrines. We are continuing to construct 152 transitional shelters for refugees, and 13 permanent shelters for the most vulnerable host community families. Permanent shelters will be long-term support for the host communities, ensuring protection for women and adolescent girls who are most at risk. These actions reduce health risks for the whole community while ensuring proper access to water, sanitation and hygiene facilities. This project will also install solar street lights to increase safety and security in the camps, especially for women and girls who need access to washrooms during the night time.

Assisting Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals in Cox’s Bazar

Emergency Monsoon Floods Response in Jamalpur

This project focuses on aiding Myanmar nationals who were forcefully displaced and currently reside in refugee camps, and their host communities to ensure a more dignified quality of life. This is accomplished by repairing latrines, rehabilitating gender-sensitive latrines and drains, and organizing hygiene awareness sessions. Additionally, we are providing genderappropriate hygiene kits, including menstrual hygiene management kits, and clothing for the most vulnerable. For those in need, we are providing transitional shelter assistance, shelter items, and installing solar lights at refugee camps.

This response focuses on improving the living conditions of Rohingya refugees and host communities in Cox’s Bazar. Our efforts include building a shelter to provide safety and security for refugees, along with handwashing stations, bathing facilities and latrines to give them a more dignified quality of life. We are also installing solar lighting to ensure safety for girls and women going to the sanitation facilities. Hygiene kits, PPE and essential supplies are being distributed to families, health staff and volunteers to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

This emergency response helped to strengthen the capacity of communities in Jamalpur affected by monsoon floods as well as supported local health centres with medical equipment to fight the spread of Covid-19. This was done by providing access to shelter, dignified sanitation facilities, flood resilient tube wells, fast-growing seeds and fertilizer, and immediate food supplies to those most in need, with a special focus on female-headed households.

Improving Living Conditions of Migrants

Emergency Response to Crisis Affected People due to the Tigray Crisis

Emergency Oxygen and Testing to Combat Covid-19

The current migrant crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina intensifies in complexity day by day, with a mass influx of refugees entering the country. This response supports migrants through the distribution of clothing, shoes, and hygiene products, in hopes of helping them settle into migrant communities. The clothing that is provided include socks, undergarments, socks, tracksuits, shirts, pyjamas, raincoats, and sneakers. In the face of the Tigray Crisis, which displaced more than 1.7 million people, Islamic Relief responded to assist crisis-affected individuals and households in the Afar region, a bordering area of Tigray. We provided food support including wheat flour, pulse and vegetable oil, and distributed living essentials such as bedding sets, kitchen sets, hygiene sets, and solar lamps for protection. This project also had a special focus on ensuring the protection of women and children from potential genderbased violence.

In support of UNICEF, Islamic Relief is helping to increase access to life-saving oxygen by procuring and installing oxygen generation plants in hospitals to treat severe and critical Covid-19 cases. An oxygen generation plant provides enough oxygen for a 500-bed hospital and can continue to be used beyond Covid-19 with a lifespan of 20 years. This response also includes providing rapid, accurate testing machines in some of the hardest-hit districts, and supporting the ongoing distribution of Covid-19 vaccines. The testing machines support an increase in testing capacity and can last up to 10 years, providing support beyond the pandemic. This is part of a larger effort to supply testing machines to 73 laboratories.

Emergency Covid-19 Response in Gujarat We are providing immediate lifesaving needs to people in Gujarat through food, living essentials, and hygiene items. This effort is being implemented in partnership with a local partner on the ground with whom we have a long-standing partnership. Urgent food assistance is provided to help the most vulnerable meet nutritional requirements, and to aid in fighting infections and expediting recovery. Food kits are designed based on the local diet and cultural staples and include rice, wheat, lentils, spices, oil, tea and sugar. In order to tackle the ongoing sanitation problem, we are distributing hygiene kits to all beneficiaries. These hygiene kits include bath soap, washing soap, disinfectant, sanitary napkins, and reusable cloth masks. This project prioritizes the most vulnerable groups, including migrant labourers, female-headed households, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

Emergency Shelter, WASH, Livelihood and Protection Response

Islamic Relief implemented this project in response to the flooding in Hyderabad, with an aim to address the food insecurity that countless families faced due to the crisis. We distributed food kits that included kitchen staples to ensure households were fed as they recuperated from the drastic aftermath of the flooding. Each family received rice, wheat, varieties of pulses, cooking oil, dry spices, peanuts and dates.

In the aftermath of the earthquakes in West Sulawesi, this response aims to benefit beneficiaries through emergency livelihood, shelter, and sanitation efforts. To promote incomegenerating activities we are providing cash for work activities in shelter and latrine construction. We are training and mobilizing selected groups to clear damaged houses and build temporary shelters and latrines. This component aims to clear earthquakeaffected sites, reuse materials, and build new shelters and latrines, all while creating income-generating activities.

Continuing a more comprehensive socio-economic recovery response for vulnerable families and those affected by the explosion and widespread financial crisis, this project supports beneficiaries across Beirut, Mount Lebanon, Akkar and Bekaa. Efforts include repairing homes, providing safe water tanks, hygiene kits, generating sustainable income activities and prioritizing care for youth, female-headed households and gender-based violence survivors. The project also includes training and awareness sessions to protect the rights and safety of women and girls, through a collaborative community approach to ensure long-term results.

Enhancing Resilience and Improving Food Security For Vulnerable Syrian Refugees

Emergency Water & Sanitation Response

Emergency Support for Internally Displaced People

Islamic Relief aims to help improve the living conditions of vulnerable Syrian refugees living across 3 different shelters in Saida through essential support. This helps cover the basic nutritional needs of these families who are struggling to survive in the midst of Lebanon’s financial crisis and pandemic restrictions. This response prioritizes female-headed households who are especially vulnerable to food insecurity and helps to alleviate negative survival strategies around food, clean water, and health. In addition, this project distributed Eid gifts to vulnerable children and provided Eid sweets for their families.

This response provided urgent support in the Circle of Gourma Rharous to families who have been displaced due to violence and are struggling to survive without clean water. This response helped increase access to safe, potable water through the rehabilitation of drinking water points while consulting and including women and girls, who primarily are the ones to collect water, in these efforts. It also focused on strengthening social cohesion through the formation of gender-inclusive committees and conducting training sessions to improve hygiene practices, ensure child protection and help prevent gender-based violence.

This response provided urgent support including emergency food, shelter and water, sanitation and hygiene items to internally displaced people in Haribomo and Gossi. Many families were only eating only one meal a day. Beneficiaries received vouchers for life-saving food supplies for one month, and essential items to improve their shelter conditions, whereby they could claim what they needed. They also received vouchers for water, hygiene and sanitation items which improved access to clean water, helped to prevent disease, and allow for a better quality of life. Additionally, Islamic Relief conducted awareness sessions on child protection, gender-based violence, and Covid-19 prevention.

Emergency Covid-19 Response in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa

To address the growing critical food insecurity in Northeast Nigeria due to an escalation of conflict over the last decade and resulting mass displacements, this project aims to mitigate the negative coping strategies vulnerable people resort to in the face of starvation. In displacement hotspots, people are vulnerable to exploitation as a means to survive. This project uses cash programming for food, provides agricultural tools and equipment, alongside training for farmers so they are able to sustain a dignified livelihood for themselves and their families. Through this response, we are addressing food insecurity and reducing the need for negative coping mechanisms.

In response to the unprecedented floods in Karachi that were brought on by severe monsoon rains, our emergency response aimed to help affected families meet their basic needs in a dignified way. In the areas most affected by the downstream of the floods, we provided support to especially vulnerable communities who were struggling in the face of poverty and health and hygiene challenges. This was in the form of multi-purpose cash grants to the most vulnerable, which allowed them to obtain urgent food, basic supplies and living essentials as per their individual family needs.

This project focused on health and food security in the North and South Waziristan Tribal District. It supported the provincial government by providing medical supplies in quarantine centers and hospitals to prevent the spread of Covid-19. We supported hospitals and quarantine centers with needed supplies for people with disabilities, menstrual products for Covid-19 female patients, and the installation of handwashing facilities. We also provided food and cash assistance to those most affected and isolated by Covid-19, and held essential behavioural change awareness campaigns to prevent the spread of the virus.

Increasing Accessibility to Covid-19 Vaccines

In the face of escalating violence, Islamic Relief provided immediate medical assistance and vital aid to those in need. We distributed food packs to over 2,000 families who have been displaced. We also provided 7 health facilities and hospitals medical support in the form of medicine, disposable items, and lab kits.

In response to the protracted crisis in Gaza Strip and the emergency situation, Islamic Relief Canada provided food and hygiene vouchers to address the urgent need for living essentials assistance to the crisisaffected population. Vouchers were provided through the e-vouchers system of the World Food Program, redeemable at retailer shops that are easily accessible to people from all communities.

In support of UNICEF’s COVAX operation, Islamic Relief Canada is helping deliver Covid-19 vaccines to the world’s poorest countries. This project aims to end the pandemic everywhere, quickly and equitably, one vaccine at a time. With your support, we are delivering 9,600 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to the Gaza Strip. Beyond our vaccine rollout, this project is contributing to risk communication and community engagement, as well as supporting the operational deployment of the Covid-19 vaccines in humanitarian settings.

Social Safety Net (Phase 2) This project provides protection to the most vulnerable households in the Gaza Strip through food vouchers, rent subsidies, medicines and personal health supplies, school materials and tuition for children, including children with disabilities. Each family receives tailored support based on their individual needs, which helps preserve their dignity in difficult circumstances. Due to the number of homes that were damaged in the attacks on Gaza this year, we are also conducting shelter rehabilitation efforts for over 40 houses. This project applies the Family Empowerment Model as an integrated approach that aims to transition vulnerable households from dependency to resilience and self-reliance. This focuses on households that have various forms of vulnerabilities but also high potentials and a vision for improving their livelihoods towards a successful future and dignified life.

THRIVE Project

Providing a protective and dignified environment for pregnant women and their newborn babies in the new maternity ward of Shifa’ hospital in the Gaza strip, this project aims to improve the provision of highquality and accessible services in the maternity health sector. It provides the necessary equipment and furniture, such as examination beds, blood pressure devices, ECGs and wheelchairs. This hospital is the only one to provide health and maternity services to the residents of the North and Gaza governorates.

This project is providing shelter repair kits, essential supplies and shelter construction training to households recovering from the typhoon. The response is also ensuring the continuation of quality education for children by providing teachers and students with the proper equipment and materials to teach and learn. There is a priority to advocate for the specific needs of groups of people, based on gender, age, disability or other vulnerability criteria so that they are protected against violence and have equal access to humanitarian aid without discrimination.

Our THRIVE project aims to reduce the humanitarian impact of conflict and disaster through improving the resiliency of conflict-affected people. This project supports a market assessment, the revival of small-scale enterprises, the implementation of women-led economic activities, and 10-days of psychosocial activities. All economic-related activities, cash grants, and in-kind resources are being distributed to small businesses. Beneficiaries receive technical support and training, with a particular focus on increasing the engagement of women in economic empowerment, food security, and livelihoods.

Cyclone Gati Recovery Response

Emergency Oxygen Supply to Combat Covid-19

Shelter Support for Internally Displaced People in Tonj North

Tropical Cyclone Gati broke records as the strongest tropical cyclone to hit Somalia in late 2020, destroying houses, social infrastructure, boats, fishing equipment, and other means of livelihood. This project supported families who lost their shelter, house items, and their livestock by rebuilding shelters, latrines, hygiene kits, and providing living essentials. In addition, this response aimed to improve the hygienic conditions of families through sessions on hygiene awareness and promotion. Training was provided to community volunteers to lead awareness sessions on child protection and preventing genderbased violence, in an effort to increase community resilience and capacity.

This response aids Somalia in combating Covid-19 by providing critical life-saving oxygen equipment in efforts to minimize shortages. Somalia’s healthcare infrastructure cannot handle the increase in Covid-19 patients and other critically ill patients requiring oxygen. In order to support their needs, we are working with the Ministry of Health and World Health Organization to install two oxygen plants and provide oxygen cylinders and equipment to hospitals in Mogadishu, Garowe, and Hargeisa.

South Sudan faces one of the worst food insecurities globally, with an estimated 7.2 million people at risk for acute food insecurity. This emergency response supports the most vulnerable households in Tonj North. It is focused on providing shelter kits to individuals at risk of famine, with a special emphasis on persons with disabilities, pregnant and lactating women, children, female-headed households, chronically ill persons, and the elderly.

Terekeka Flood Emergency Response in Central Equatoria State

Shelter and WASH Support for Flood-Affected Communities in West Kordofan

Ethiopian Refugee Response

This response is focused on flood-affected groups including young children, the elderly and people living with HIV, who are especially vulnerable to disease and displacement. Families are receiving urgent food supplies to prevent acute hunger and starvation. To increase safety for women and children, they are also being provided with temporary shelter materials and sanitation items. The response includes hygiene training and community capacity building to help prevent the spread of disease as well as Covid-19.

This project was focused on improving water, sanitation and hygiene conditions for flood-affected households. This included providing emergency shelter kits, mosquito nets, hygiene and dignity kits and water purification materials. We rehabilitated water sources and pumps, built and rehabilitated latrines, as well as improved hygiene conditions and awareness through a gender-sensitive approach. Female-headed households, the elderly, children, and people with disabilities were prioritized to ensure that we reached those who were most vulnerable.

In response to the flow of large numbers of Ethiopian refugees seeking safety in Sudan, we are working urgently to minimize the health risks vulnerable populations are susceptible to. This includes a water, sanitation and hygiene response which includes constructing shared emergency pit latrines, water tanks, shared washing facilities, and providing cleaning tools, disinfectant soap and masks to protect against Covid-19.

In July 2021, heavy torrential rains and flash flooding hit the Gedaref State in Sudan, resulting in the destruction of homes and damaging essential infrastructure. Islamic Relief responded immediately, providing life-saving living essentials, hygiene kits, and cash transfers for food. Lifesaving essentials included emergency plastic sheets, sleeping mats, blankets, mosquito nets, and kitchen utensils, while hygiene kits included menstrual pads, soap, chlorine tablets, and jerry cans. Amidst a global pandemic, we distributed personal protective equipment, masks and sanitizer to protect families in their most vulnerable time.

The Sarmada Rehabilitation Centre in Idlib first opened its doors in 2014 to help rehabilitate patients experiencing trauma or recovering from surgeries. The centre also includes nursing and physiotherapy departments, a pathology laboratory and ambulance transport. With your support, the centre continues to operate and deliver life-saving medical support to the most vulnerable.

The ongoing conflict in Syria has resulted in the deaths of many adult men, leaving their wives widowed and children orphaned. This project supports hundreds of orphan children and their families in the Aleppo Governorate, by providing them with monthly food parcels and hygiene kits. The monthly gifts help to reduce some of the financial burden faced by the children and their single mothers or caregivers. Our work helps alleviate protection risks such as child labour, forced marriage of adolescent girls, psychosocial distress, family separation, and lack of basic and societal protections.

Water & Sanitation Services in Northwest Syria This project aims to help alleviate the suffering of the vulnerable and displaced Syrians and their host communities through emergency water and sanitation services across Aleppo and Idlib. These services include establishing a solar-powered network for water pumps and sewage, as well as improving waste disposal, living environments and hygiene conditions. It also focuses on improving the quality of basic education of school children through the construction and maintenance of water and sanitation facilities in schools. Heavy rains and flooding in Northwest Syria further deteriorated the conditions of already vulnerable internally displaced people residing in camps. Islamic Relief responded to this crisis through food parcels to ensure no families go to sleep hungry. Each food parcel included staples such as rice, flour, and sugar, which were distributed to the most vulnerable affected families. Particular attention was given to families of femaleheaded households and people with disabilities.

In order to prevent a deadly fourth wave of Covid-19 in Tunisia, this project is helping to reinforce and improve the capacities of public hospitals in Tunisia. This response provides hospitals with intensive care equipment and machines to reach the most vulnerable and sick in a timely manner. We are supplying hospitals with intensive care beds, ventilators, syringe pump systems, patient modular monitors, biochemistry lab machines and oxygen concentrators to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

This project aims to better integrate orphaned refugee Syrian children into the community and positively influence their personal development through improving their social skills and mental health. We are providing a supportive environment for these children through access to warm meals, art supplies, activities, gifts, camps, and psychological support. This helps to positively influence their personal development, social skills and mental health while integrating them into society more easily.

This response assists families in dire need in the Sana’a Governorate through rehabilitating 3 non-functional public water sources, in addition to providing hygiene kits and hosting awareness-raising sessions on WASH. This project also provides employment opportunities through cash for work activities, where community members rehabilitate or protect community assets such as roads, small bodies of water such as ponds, agricultural terraces, and more.

Emergency WASH, Food Security and Livelihood in Al Dhale’e and Dhamar This response aims to reduce suffering while maintaining the human dignity of internally displaced people in Al Dhale’e and Dhamar. It focuses on rehabilitating 4 water systems to improve long-term access to clean drinking water. One way this is being achieved is by upgrading water systems to solar-powered versions in order to minimize negative environmental impacts and ensure a long-term power source. We are also extending the water piping system to ensure accessibility of water stations by making them close to houses, with adequate privacy and lighting. We further emphasize the importance of minimizing environmental impacts through cleaning campaigns and waste management awareness sessions in an attempt to reduce pollution. Hygiene kits that include chlorine tablets, soap bars for hand washing, washing powder and water containers, are being distributed. In order to meet food and essential living needs, Islamic Relief is providing unconditional cash assistance to

Sustainable Livelihoods in Agriculture

Safe Water for Life Ensuring Public Health in Bangladesh

This project is in response to the effects of ongoing conflict, poverty, and complex disaster in Afghanistan. It aims to reduce the poverty rates among vulnerable women through livelihood and education development opportunities. Livelihood opportunities include literacy, vocational, and lifeskill training, along with self-help groups to ensure long-term success. Education is a key component of this project, with an importance placed on the education of girls through community awareness sessions, teacher retention, and the provision of educational material.

Both Albania and Kosovo face similar challenges, particularly affecting women and youth, of rural poverty, high unemployment rates and limited livelihood opportunities. In response, we are providing agriculture and livestock to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for the most vulnerable families, with a focus on female-headed households and orphans. We are providing greenhouses, livestock, poultry, and water wells, alongside all the necessary tools, equipment and training to ensure successful farming. This project improved access to WASH services for families in Jamalpur and Sunamgonj districts in Bangladesh. Project components included the construction of 200 shallow tube wells, 50 deep tube wells, and 250 household latrines. Islamic Relief also trained community members on maintenance and conducted hygiene awareness sessions. There was a special focus on the active participation of the local community, especially women as they play the main role in water collection and usage for their families.

This project aims to support women from extreme poverty backgrounds and marginalized households in Rangpur and Kurigram. This includes improving their food and livelihood security through opportunities for productivity, income generation, employment, socioeconomic inclusion, and sustainable access to group-led financial services. By strengthening community-based organizations and helping to develop their skills, we are empowering women to become selfreliant.

Recognizing the pressing issue of early marriage in Rangpur, this project is working to empower boys and girls and mobilize communities to develop new norms and practices to end child marriage. It also works to generate awareness within families about the harmful effect of early marriage in society. This is done by building wider public opinion about the issue through partnering with local opinion leaders, religious leaders and elected representatives. Selected vulnerable families are also receiving financial support and grants to sustain their livelihoods, which has proven to be one of the drivers for early marriage.

This project helped to build the capacity of female first-responders and local female leadership in humanitarian responses, which is necessary to meet the needs of families across the camps. This was done through empowering Rohingya women and adolescent girls to be transformative leaders, through knowledge, skills and community training with cultural sensitivities in mind. Men, boys and leaders were also engaged to raise awareness and change harmful beliefs about women and girls. Through this project, women were able to meaningfully participate in community management and decision-making, as well as advocate for protecting the rights of Rohingya women and girls.

Improving Access to Water & Sanitation in Sherpur

Educational Support for Orphans

Vocational Education for Low-Income Students

Recognizing the inadequate water and sanitation options within schools and communities of Sherpur, this response tackles these concerns through two projects. We are building multiple solar-driven water distribution systems for the community, which reduces water collection time for women and girls who usually collect water. Additionally, we are building 10 water, sanitation and hygiene blocks for school children, with a focus on girls. This increases accessibility to education and ensures children are able to learn in a safe environment.

This project supports orphans through online schooling, providing regular classes in English, German and Turkish, IT, math, and Quran recitation. The English courses are facilitated by a team of our Inspire volunteers from Canada, who continue to deliver these courses on weekends using innovative methods. We are increasing access to education for orphans in rural areas and those with disabilities in order to prepare them for higher education and employment. Additionally, this project supports single mothers through online schooling in similar fields, with the aim of increasing their opportunities for employment.

Islamic Relief aims to improve the quality of vocational education for children from low-income households, including orphaned and disabled children through this project. Through this project, we are providing hot meals for students as well as training for teachers and students across 11 vocational schools. In addition, nine of these schools are receiving equipment grants to increase their capacity. This support aims to increase employability, and improve their family’s livelihoods through learning a trade.

Empowering Vulnerable Women & Youth The impact of poverty coupled with drought-related crises in the Meiso District of Ethiopia has left countless people vulnerable, especially women and children. This project focused on improving the living conditions of single women-headed households in the slums of Hyderabad, by increasing their livelihood options. This project used skills development such as basic stitching, asset creation such as bangles making and local entrepreneurship development to enable women to increase their livelihood options. Additionally, in order to strengthen the social protection of single women households, this project enhanced their knowledge on essential rights and entitlements. With the onset of Covid-19, this project also tackled food insecurity—a rising impact of the pandemic.

Annual disasters such as drought and flash floods destroyed the livelihoods of vulnerable villages in the Bima and Dompu districts of the Island of Sumbawa. With the support of local partners, we reduced the number of people affected by disasters and reduced the economic loss of maize farmers, salt producers, onion farmers, and other micro and small enterprise workers. We also established community disaster risk management teams, who implemented livelihood risk mitigation plans and increased community preparedness against disasters.

This response provides the children of refugee and host communities with well-rounded opportunities for education and growth through online academic support such as remedial classes in Arabic, Math, and English. We are also providing extra-curricular activities such as drama, art, sports, storytelling, and basic agriculture along with psychosocial programs in a safe space. To prevent high dropout rates and ease financial burdens, families receive financial support through cash grants for rent. The project is also working to increase awareness of hygiene practices, child protection, and gender-based violence services, as well as provide hygiene kits to mothers.

The Syrian refugee crisis puts a strain on Jordan’s economy and infrastructure, with added pressure on all sectors including education, health and water. This project enhanced the livelihoods of vulnerable women by building their capacity through training as well as start-up grants to run their own income-generating businesses. In addition, cash grants were provided to aid numerous families in meeting their basic rent and helping increase school attendance for children. The increased ability to support themselves through a dignified livelihood has improved the psychosocial status of vulnerable populations and empowered them in creating jobs for other people within their community.

This integrated project aims to create resilient communities through increased productivity, income, and access to safe water. We are providing techniques to support crop diversification, drought-tolerant crops, home garden production, and the establishment of communitybased livestock. Other components of this project include environment, WASH, nutrition advocacy through school clubs, protection and gender awareness campaigns, fencing of a girls school, school gardening, development of water facilities and the installation of irrigation systems. In order to improve income generation, we are establishing Group Savings and Loan Associations and providing financial institution linkages.

This project supports two primary schools to help improve educational infrastructure, enhance the learning environment, increase school attendance, advocate for child protection rights, and create a culture of environmental conservation. This is being achieved by building new disability-inclusive classrooms and rehabilitating existing ones, providing new desks and textbooks, dignity kits for girls, uniforms and repairing water tanks and sanitation facilities in schools. The project is conducting out-of-school enrollment and retention campaigns, especially for girls. In addition, it focuses on building awareness for child rights protection and environmental conservation. Through this, we seek to contribute to achieving inclusive and equitable quality education in Kilifi, while promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Clean Water for People in Need Health and quality of life in Kosovo are increasingly threatened by the poor quality of water and scarcity of water reserves. The protection, conservation and monitoring of water quality is a major environmental challenge. Islamic Relief Canada’s response supports families that lack drinking water by increasing their access to water sources through the provision of water wells in 28 family homes and 15 schools. Each family receives a consultation from a technical expert to find the best location for the water well within their homes, so they can have direct access for their day-to-day usage and farming needs. This project includes awareness sessions on the best hygiene and sanitation practices, as well as training on how to maintain their water wells and prevent the spread of Covid-19.

This project ensured long-term income generation and food security for vulnerable families in Kosovo. This was achieved through the provision of animals such as cows and poultry, greenhouses, water wells, and training for each provided farming asset. The water wells were provided to those with greenhouses to ensure sufficient water for plants, as well as those lacking access to clean water. Families benefited from training on asset transfer and support to ensure they can succeed in increasing the value of their assets. Families were also provided with veterinary training on how to care for these animals, and will also receive regular animal check-ups from a veterinarian.

This project supports the only free and public pediatric clinic in Nahr ElBared camp and surrounding area to provide primary healthcare services to vulnerable children. Through the clinic and this project, we provide free medical consultations and medication for acute illnesses, with hopes of reducing morbidity amongst vulnerable children. We also organize and conduct ongoing awareness sessions on health geared towards the parents of the children. These primary health care services are made available for both the refugee communities and the Lebanese host community.

In response to the significant impacts of Covid-19, coupled with the economic recession, this project works to improve the well-being of children by increasing access to quality education, psychosocial support, and essential living items. We are providing education classes through shelters, and equipping a mobile education unit with all the necessary items to ensure student engagement. Professional psychosocial support and psychological counselling are also being provided to vulnerable students. To tackle the lack of access to essential items, we are providing food parcels and hygiene kits to students and their families.

This project works to fulfil the basic rights and needs of the vulnerable communities residing in the Blantyre District. It is focused on reducing vulnerability to protection-related risks, and increasing access to the basic human needs of shelter, education, water and sanitation, and emergency needs. The project includes reconstructing safe and dignified shelters for orphan families, repairing desks and seats within classrooms, and installing solarpowered water supply systems in schools. It also includes establishing new borehole wells with hand pumps for these communities, as well as improving hygiene and sanitation facilities.

This project works to increase access to quality education for Rohingya children aged 7 to 17 in Malaysia. The funded school prepares students to enter the workforce or attend university. To accommodate Covid-19 regulations and online schooling, we are distributing food packages to the homes of students to encourage their continued participation in school. We are additionally providing education supplies, uniforms, health checkups, and food packages to refugee students.

Conflict and insecurity in Mali has led to high levels of internal displacement and heightened the need for assistance, burdening the limited existing water infrastructure. This project increases access to drinking water by establishing six new basic water systems reliant on solarpowered pumping. In addition, we are improving knowledge and skills in regards to hygiene, sanitation, and water point management for the target community through campaigns and lessons.

Supporting Economic Recovery and Resilience in the Circle of Douentza

This project empowers women, girls and people with disabilities by training them on leadership, small business initiatives management, and social cohesion. It provides them with start-up funds to create their own small business, and support to help make it successful. By making an income, families are able to afford school fees for their children which increases school attendance and performance. This project also helps create community-based structures that ensure successful referral management of any abuse or genderbased violence within communities. By creating functional community spaces, these vulnerable populations are able to live in harmony with other community members while being involved in community decisionmaking spaces.

Working across 5 villages, this project focuses on enhancing the resilience and socio-economic recovery of vulnerable households within the Circle of Douentza. For extremely poor and food insecure households affected by conflict or climate change, we are providing cash grants, short cycle seeds, and vaccinated cows to assist with immediate recovery and to increase income levels. A local women’s cooperative, which was created with the support of Islamic Relief and your funds is also managing a cereal bank.

Socioeconomic Transformation in Rakhine State

Through this multi-year project, we are providing support to vulnerable households, with a focus on women, to improve their financial situations. Through skill training for youth and the introduction of incomegenerating activities, extremely poor and vulnerable households are able to generate a steady and livable income. The project is improving water, sanitation and hygiene facilities through the camps, as well as constructing solar street lights and distributing solar lights to the most vulnerable families to ensure their safety at night.

This integrated project addresses the various concerns internally displaced people face in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. We are addressing health concerns by increasing access to health services and enhancing awareness on the prevention of illness and diseases. To address transportation challenges and enhance socioeconomic mobility, we are building a 3.5 km road. Additionally, we provide vocational training to youth to increase their employment opportunities and income generation.

We are taking on an integrated approach by improving the socioeconomic conditions of rural and marginalized communities through increased access to livelihood means, WASH facilities and the ability to cope with conflict, shocks and disaster. This project works to increase the income and assets of vulnerable households, as well as their knowledge and awareness on WASH behaviours, and improve their access to a dignified livelihood through skills training and support. Preventing Gender-Based Violence through SocioEconomic Empowerment In the face of extreme poverty and poor social conditions, women in the Rautahat district face the highest physical violence and abuse cases in the country. This project focused on school infrastructure development and WASH awareness activities in Pokhara, Nepal. We helped repair and maintain school buildings, fencing, playgrounds, painted school walls and classrooms, and provided furniture and information technology support. In collaboration with government schools and communities, we conducted WASH awareness campaigns to educate vulnerable individuals on the storage and utilization of water, hand washing techniques, the importance of water in health, and environmental protection.

This project is reducing poverty and food and nutritional insecurity rates in the Dosso Region, Niger. This is done by sustainable and climate adaptive agriculture development, and small business development for vulnerable populations. Through the generation of income, households become food secure and access nutritious food. This multi-sector project prevents malnutrition by raising awareness on food, health, WASH, and women’s rights.

We are increasing access to safe and dignified protection services for vulnerable community members, which include people with disabilities, women, girls and the elderly. We are supporting protection services across the village, district and municipal levels through awareness-raising sessions for girls, WASH, maternal health and nutrition, and legal services. Solar water supply systems and gender-sensitive sanitation facilities are being built to ensure protection within schools. Additionally, this project forms community groups to train them on entrepreneurship and small-scale business development, ensuring their sustainable livelihood.

Within the Fakara municipality, climate change and disaster vulnerability are core challenges. This project addresses the issue of the community’s limited capacity for coping with disasters and food insecurity due to decreased food availability. We tackle these issues by improving the basic living conditions through humanitarian assistance, increasing the adaptability of vulnerable households, and ensuring partners are effective in building resilience and protecting community rights.

This project focused on the construction of two mini solar powered water supply systems. It promoted income generation for women through the installation of a market garden where cooperatives of women produced high market value food. Additionally, peanut production and processing were promoted in the village, where women were provided with the manual machinery to take groundnuts from their gardens to produce oil, butter and cakes. Our work focused on immediate income generation while ensuring sustainability, especially for women.

Islamic Relief Canada supported the Save the Children project which was focused on improving access to sexual reproductive health services and rights of children in Nigeria. This project focuses on rural communities where there are higher rates of early marriage, early childbearing, low educational attainment, and discriminatory social and gender norms. This project helps increase access to high-quality, gendersensitive and youth-friendly health services in order to ensure informed decision making among vulnerable young girls, boys and their guardians.

North Waziristan Initiative for Economic Upliftment

Orphan and Widows Empowerment Project Phase 2

To address climate change and the environment, Islamic Relief Canada aims to increase the resilience of impacted communities in Pakistan. This project is promoting innovative and indigenous disaster risk reduction practices by planting 67,000 wild trees, establishing ten fruit orchards, and constructing retaining walls with bioengineering techniques, as well as six check dams to reduce water flow over drainage ditches. Climatesensitive policy action is an additional component, with an aim to create an environment for consultation meetings with stakeholders to discuss climate change issues and biodiversity conservation.

To ensure the socio-economic sustainability and resilience of communities in North Waziristan, we are implementing an initiative with a particular focus on women and girls. The project helps improve food security by establishing fruit and forest plant nurseries, supporting and training farming cooperatives, and equipping women farmers with market-based skill development, kitchen gardening resources, poultry and livestock.

We are working to improve the socioeconomic conditions of widowed families through livelihood support, healthcare, psychosocial support, education and social empowerment in Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Muzaffarabad. This project phase provides business grants to widows who graduated from vocational skill training. The poor health status of widows and their families is a significant concern that we are mitigating by developing linkages with healthcare service providers to provide free healthcare. In addition, this phase of our project grants scholarships on a merit basis to selected students for higher education.

Transformation and Adaptation Against Climate Variability In response to climate change and the increasing intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, Islamic Relief Canada aims to increase the resilience of impacted communities in the Quetta and Harnai districts. This project focuses on increasing drought resilience through water use efficiency and indigenous and sustainable access to food security, with a focus on women and girls. Project components include installing clean water sources for domestic use as well as public water stations, establishing agricultural irrigation systems, and constructing water reservoirs for climate adaptive agriculture. Repairing Damaged Healthcare & Education Facilities

This project aims to enhance economic empowerment among community members, particularly women, in Muzaffarabad. We are incorporating various livelihood elements that consider the economic role of women, such as honey beekeeping, poultry farming, livestock etc. Climate adaptive techniques are being considered in all livelihood elements such as farming techniques and rainwater harvesting to ensure sustainable success. Additionally, we are installing water purification solutions to increase access to safe drinking water and minimize the participation of women and girls in risky water collection.

This project improved the quality of life for preschool children through early detection and treatment of health problems among vulnerable and marginalized children at kindergartens. This included integrating health services into schools by providing checkups, awareness programs, tools, medicines, better hygiene and nutritional support for vulnerable children, in addition to training teachers and supporting curriculum enhancement. Alongside a gap in the current primary health care, which doesn’t include preschool children aged 4-5 years in their health programs, this project was instrumental in detecting health problems during the first stage and in improving overall children’s health in Gaza.

In response to damaged public service facilities during the May 2021 violence that devastated Gaza, our project aims to restore public service delivery and capacity through rehabilitating health and education centres. We are working to repair two primary health care clinics and provide them with new equipment, resources, tools, training and laboratories. Our efforts also include rehabilitating 3 schools and 3 special education centres with extensive damage.

This new project is focused on recovery efforts in Gaza, and provides urgent relief to vulnerable families by improving their access to equitable and quality health rehabilitation services. The project aims to build a foundation for community driven recovery, restore agricultural livelihood, and enhance resilience and food security in rural communities. This is achieved by providing internships and temporary employment opportunities for youth at local health rehabilitation NGOs, service providers, agriculture NGOs, and damaged agricultural sites. As a result of this project, youth will be able to earn an income and make it possible for their families to afford nutritious food. Additionally, access to health services will be improved for injured, disabled and elderly people who are facing problematic access.

This multi-sectoral recovery project is in response to the escalations in violence in May 2021. We are providing highly needed support under 3 main areas: cash assistance, rehabilitation and livelihood. Vulnerable households are receiving cash assistance in order to purchase essential needs. Our second main focus includes the rehabilitation of 110 water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, with the purpose of repairing damaged water systems within homes and enhancing access to clean water. Lastly, we are supporting 25 struggling micro-businesses towards achieving dignified livelihoods. This is being achieved through providing funds, managerial training and targeted support, to restore the businesses and enable them to withstand further economic shocks.

In order to support the livelihood of farmers in Palestine as they recuperate from devastating attacks that burned or uprooted their olive groves, Islamic Relief is facilitating the planting of new olive trees and the cultivation of new olive groves. This project supports farmers financially to improve their income generating capacity, and increase green areas and environmental protection in Palestine. In addition, this project is providing farmers with a simple irrigation network as well as essential equipment and tools to enhance the cultivation conditions and quality in accordance with agricultural standards.

Sustaining Transformative & Resilient Initiatives in Vulnerable Communities

Gaza’s youth are being provided with special support, counselling, workshops, and training to cope and overcome the traumas of war and loss. This multi-year project prioritizes the most vulnerable groups and their caregivers, working with local partners to provide psychosocial support services. Our assistance gives these partner organizations a way to continue these much needed programs long-term, and successfully replicate the same program with new groups of children.

This 3-year project is helping to revive and strengthen local economic activities such as farming and fishing, local industries and other forms of livelihood in Ranao, Philippines. We are providing support through selfhelp groups, enhancing local skills, improving technology, and promoting innovative and transformative solutions to resource management and climate change adaptation.

We are also introducing Islamic interest-free microfinance to enable communities to access halal and just forms of capitalization and resources. Stipends are also being given to

families to keep 600 young children in school and reduce drop-out rates. In the context of resilience and climate change, we are supporting local governments to implement innovative solutions to resource depletion, disaster risk reduction, environmental protection and livelihood sustainability.

Health, Education, Agriculture and Livelihood Project (Phase 2)

Islamic Relief Canada is rehabilitating the barrage that supports the irrigation of water from the Shebelle River, which is a major source of water that sustains local agricultural production. We are clearing debris, repairing and maintaining the main canal, and replacing and repairing gates as needed. On the ground, we are establishing a Canal Water Management Committee to ensure the sustainability of the project.

This Islamic Relief Canada project seeks to improve the availability of clean and safe water to the communities living in four villages in the Sanaag region. Water Supply systems are being installed in two of the four villages, coupled with the provision of hygiene kits and hygiene promotion activities. Each hygiene kit includes two jerry cans, one 10-litre jerry for drawing water and another for storage, a 200 g bath soap, one bar of laundry soap, and one packet of chlorine tablets.

This project aims to improve the livelihood of vulnerable communities in five different ways. We are providing primary health care services through a health facility, supporting the current school in the local district through training and teaching materials for students, and increasing food security by supporting farming households with low-cost and high-quality agricultural technology to increase food production. Additionally, we are strengthening community-level resilience by providing microfinancing and skills improvements training to women. This project is also improving sanitation through the construction of culturally appropriate latrines.

Promoting Gender Equality and Resilient Livelihood

The second aspect helps to enhance the livelihoods of vulnerable farmer households with a focus on female farmers. Through specialized agricultural and irrigation training, farmers are able to tackle the challenges they are facing in food

production while implementing sustainable agricultural practices to grow more food and increase income. To support agricultural practices, solar installations and drip irrigation systems are being upgraded and repaired. Farmers are being equipped with training on disease surveillance and livestock husbandry, as well as much-needed vaccinations and restocking of veterinary drugs, to prevent the loss of livestock.

Improving Living Conditions of Orphan Families & Communities in Ampara District

Food Security and Livelihood Support for Returnees and Vulnerable Host Communities

The project provides sustainable solutions to economically empower selected orphan families who are living in extreme poverty. This is done through increasing access to quality education, building individualized family business plans, providing skills development and vocational training, and establishing community self-help networks, with a special focus on women and girls. This support leads to improved skills and livelihood for widows, providing them with a means to live a dignified life.

This project provided a diversified range of livelihood assistance to internally displaced people, returnees and host communities. The aim of our work is to reduce socio-economic vulnerability and long-term reliance on humanitarian assistance. The project focused on a gender-balanced approach to access diversified resilient food security, loans, livelihood assets, employment opportunities, and the improvement of entrepreneurship skills.

Access to Safe Drinking Water for Al Rahad Locality To reduce the cases of water-borne diseases and increase access to clean and safe drinking water, this project installed over 20 hand pumps and upgraded solar power water systems. Our efforts included training the community in health, hygiene and improved water usage, as well as involving communities in the consultation and implementation process to ensure that they get the most benefit out of the project. We established a local water point committee that was trained in managing mechanical operations and maintenance funds, as well as a local team for hygiene promotion and community education. To minimize the gender disparity in safe access to water, we appointed women to make up 50% of the committee. Hygiene sessions conducted by the committee focused on the importance of proper and consistent use of latrines, proper handwashing practices, proper storage of water, cholera prevention mechanisms, and Covid-19 prevention.

Sudan’s Blue Nile State has been severely affected by the civil war, leading to an increase in internally displaced people and little access to clean drinking water. To reduce cases of water-borne diseases and increase access to clean and safe drinking water, Islamic Relief is installing over 10 hand pumps in the Damazine locality. Additionally, the installation of hand pumps increases access to improved drinking water, reduces overcrowding in host community water sources, and improves relations between host communities and displaced people.

This project provides emergency healthcare support in Northwest Syria amidst the ongoing conflict. We are providing essential medicine and supplies, referral services support, and counselling and awarenessraising on breastfeeding and maternal nutrition. Our team distributes baby milk and formula in health facilities while providing healthcare staff with training in regards to preventing and responding to gender-based violence. To ensure inclusivity, health facilities have undergone rehabilitation with considerations on privacy and dignity.

This project is an adaptation of our one-to-one orphan sponsorship program, to now support entire orphan families in Syria. Through monthly sponsorships, we support families by providing funds for their basic needs, educational opportunities, health support, and livelihood opportunities. Currently, this project is being piloted and monitored with Syrian families, in hopes of expanding it to support further vulnerable families in various countries.

This project aims to improve the chances of children completing a full course of primary school by improving their access to WASH and education services. We are providing awareness training to students on how best to use and maintain latrines, cleaning items to ensure proper hygiene, including soaps, detergents, disinfectants, and conducting hygiene related activities for students. Additionally through this response we are installing school libraries and creating reading clubs to improve primary school children’s education. This project is helping to improve the health of thousands of rural school students across 24 governorates.

This project works in Tataouine to empower women economically and socially and improve their health. We created 8 women’s groups, with the goal of increasing their access to sustainable livelihoods through production tools, training, and marketing support. We are helping to create micro-projects for 50 families to increase income generation. Additionally, this project raises awareness on reproductive health, women’s rights, gender based violence, while training them on first aid techniques. Through our health caravans, composed of specialized doctors, midwives and nurses, we are able to provide medical care and detect illnesses such as breast cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

This project is helping Libyan migrants settle in Tunisia by strengthening their urban settlement capabilities through access to basic services in three different sectors. In the health sector, the project provides access to quality health services such as doctor consultations, laboratory analysis and medicines. Psycho-social and protection services are made available to migrants who have experienced trauma. Education is another key factor of this project with the provision of school bags for children, libraries to enhance education, and training for teachers.

WASH and Livelihood Support

This project distributes urgent food support to vulnerable refugee communities. This is done by providing families with food cards to allow them to select items based on their individual needs, which helps preserve their dignity in difficult circumstances. Livelihood support is also being provided to 20 families through vocational training on pastry making, to help them become more self reliant and enhance their access to income generating activities.

The conflict in Yemen compounded with the severe economic crisis, disease outbreaks, and natural disasters, drove humanitarian need to staggering levels. Our team found that countless vulnerable communities did not have access to safe drinking water, and risked illness by using unsafe water sources. This project provided WASH support by rehabilitating twelve water systems, forming and training water management committees, and supporting awareness on safe hygiene practices, alongside distributing hygiene kits.

Catastrophic flooding and storms in British Columbia have left thousands displaced, trapped, and in need of immediate assistance. Countless families are left without access to food and safety supplies. Due to the widespread mudslides and broken infrastructure, Vancouver is left disconnected from the rest of British Columbia, and the province has declared a state of emergency.

In Lytton, British Columbia, we responded to the effects of a destructive wildfire that destroyed much of the area, leaving countless residents displaced, including First Nations residents. Our teams in Kamloops, Kelowna, Fraser Valley and Vancouver came together with the BC Muslims Association and Muslim Food Bank to respond with relief efforts, including basic living essentials, logistical aid, and hot meals.

Our response was centred around three phases to ensure we are still on the ground once the cameras leave. In our initial phase, we were able to conduct thorough needs assessments, provide logistical support, emergency

funds, and hot meals. In the second phase, which took place in August 2021, we provided food and grocery vouchers, procured and delivered furniture, and provided necessary household items and appliances for evacuees living in temporary housing. In August 2018, a six-alarm fire broke out at 650 Parliament Street in Toronto, Ontario. The residents were displaced, left with great financial strain, emotional, physical, and mental hardship, and no permanent home since 2018. Our response was focused on helping residents settle back into their apartments after being dislocated for a prolonged period. We also were able to aid numerous families and individuals with temporary housing in the aftermath of this disaster.

Providing thousands of winter kits and hot meals to the unhoused and vulnerable families during the coldest months. With Covid-19 still underway, we are focused on providing hygiene supplies along with winter warmth items that include warm hats, gloves, waterproof blankets, face masks, sweaters, soap, sanitizer, shampoo and sanitary pads. Hot meals are being provided through various soup kitchens. These distributions are being carried out across 28 regions and cities in Canada, from Yellowknife to Halifax.

Back to School Campaign

Black Muslim Youth Beyond Success

Our focus on reliable and continuous programming for Indigenous girls, youth and women promise a more sustainable and adaptable means for their empowerment. This project in partnership with Stardale Women’s Group Foundation encourages Indigenous girls to design, build and share visions for their future through art, writing, sewing, plays and poetry.

Our Back to School Campaign serves vulnerable youth from kindergarten to grade 6 across Canada. In collaboration with Staples and Bags in Bulk, we created prepackaged backpacks with school supplies to help ease the burden on vulnerable families during the back-to-school season. Each backpack contained exercise books, scissors, a pencil case, pencils, rulers, pencil crayons, markers, sharpeners, erasers, PPE, and other age-appropriate supplies.

Addressing barriers faced by Black Muslim youth that live in Toronto’s Northwest region through our partnership with the Jane and Finch Community and Family Centre. This project extends their regular youth services by increasing the capacity to serve Black Muslim youth in the area. The aim is to have better catered programming for at-risk and vulnerable youth, helping them navigate systems and resources, providing mentorship and leadership opportunities,and increasing graduation and employment rates.

Working with marginalized BIPOC youth in partnership with BridgeTO, a grassroots organization. This project works to build the path to success in the transition between high school graduation and adulthood. Activities are focused on providing guidance and support through access to free tutoring, mentoring, scholarships, learning equipment and opportunities to shape the future of these promising youth.

To share the Eid spirit, we conducted two Eid toy drives this year to make sure kids living in vulnerable and low-income situations are also able to feel the joy of this special time. On the occasions of Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha, we delivered wrapped gifts of toys, books and goodies that you helped select and provide. What started as a small local project soon expanded into a cross-country campaign that has brought smiles to children across Canada.

This project in Edmonton in partnership with Al-Rashid Youth is focused on strengthening vulnerable youth through professional and personal development workshops, counselling, and programs that will build their foundation as community leaders. This is done through building self-esteem, communication skills, problem-solving, fundraising, budgeting, administrative skills, goal setting, maximizing productivity, team building, program/project/ event planning and management, responsibility, ethics, crosscultural relationships and volunteer management. These workshops were also specifically designed to equip these youth with the skills to organize and manage quality programs that service other vulnerable youth, Indigenous peoples, and refugee communities.

This project is dedicated to helping youth in the GTA that have become involved in the justice system find a support system to help them avoid second charges. This program is in partnership with Direct Your Life, a grassroots support group for offenders in Toronto. Through providing mentorship programs, participants are establishing strong leadership skills, meaningful connections and gaining a healthy and successful integration back to society. With regular activities, youth are able to stay connected to a strong supportive community, while strengthening their leadership and communication skills and directing their energies in positive outlets.

Islamic Relief Canada proudly supports the Islamic Heritage Month (IHM) Planning Committee, with the goal of raising awareness of Islamic history and combating racism and Islamophobia. This project has a focus on vulnerable youth and students in the public education system. Our aim is to engage, enable and empower students to challenge Islamophobia and racism and increase student awareness of mental health and well-being through workshops, presentations, film screenings, posters, and social media education campaigns.

As part of our strategic focus on vulnerable youth, we worked with ISNA Canada to facilitate mental and spiritual development for youth through counselling. This project helped to provide regular counselling sessions for youth struggling through issues of faith, discrimination, conflict, or abuse - who were looking for a holistic counselling approach that was religiously sensitive. Quebec Mosque Shooting Orphan Fund

We partnered with Wanasah, a notfor-profit organization developed to meet the urgent unmet mental health and addictions services in the Regent Park area. They use culturally safe practices, in their timely, holistic, spiritually inclusive, and communitycentred care. Services provided by this project include crisis response, family advocacy, mental health system navigation, and group-based therapy. In addition, the project now includes outreach, psychotherapy, and case management to ensure vulnerable youth, black youth and their families are supported during the ongoing pandemic.

Through this project, in collaboration with Healing as One in the GTA, we engage youth and support them in overcoming the difficult circumstances that they face, through mental health training, mentorship and advocacy, to uplift and empower the vulnerable youth in the community.

This project is providing financial support to the orphans of the Quebec Mosque shooting. The money that is collected monthly is being distributed equitably between the families who are eligible and who have consented to receive assistance. This fund helps support the cost of living for families that are having difficulty making ends meet, and helps these mothers build a better future for their children.

Wellness Kits for Patients at Lakeridge Hospital

Supporting the Canadian Rohingya Development Initiative to help sustain a Rohingya Learning Centre for the community to educate their children on Islamic studies, Rohingya culture, history and morals in the Kitchener-Waterloo region. We support this organization as they are best positioned to help their own community, they share the same struggles and understand the real needs, whilst connecting the continuously growing Rohingya community to local resources.

This project works with the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration (MRCSSI) and London and Middlesex Children’s Aid Society (LCAS). They work together with front-line workers, the family, and the community to ensure the safety of the children at risk of violence without necessarily removing them from their homes. This project shares lessons from this partnership to achieve particular goals for the Muslim community. This includes, revising the culturally integrative model of collaboration between MRC and LCAS, and developing a guideline for culturally integrative child protection responses to help Muslim community organizations initiate culturally meaningful conversations about family and child protection.

Working in collaboration with our Durham regional teams, we provided support to families with children admitted long-term in hospitals through gift bags to lift their spirits during difficult times. These gift bags included items such as colouring books, toys, handwritten cards, Islamic Relief Canada swag items, and gift cards to support the financial cost of purchasing food. We hope to make their stay easier, by providing some short-term relief to uplift families.

Seeds of Leadership Seeds of Leadership aim to inspire and enable young leaders to shape a better future by working with high school and university-aged youth who exhibit signs of leadership potential. This project develops youth so they are able to lead themselves, teams, and eventually teams. The program takes on an equitable approach, reaching youth regardless of socio-economic situations, or what region they reside in. A diverse form of learning methods is used, including camps, retreats, mentorship, personal projects, and coaching. The Canadian Muslim Covid-19 Task Force is a project in partnership with the Muslim Medical Association of Canada aimed at producing and organizing Covid-19 resources and events. This project serves vulnerable communities and Canadian Muslims, by informing and educating them on Covid-19 and vaccinations across Canada. This is done by collaborating with local mosques, community services, public health, and health care experts to raise public awareness.

In response to the severe shortage of subspecialist doctors in Palestine, this project is working with Canadian doctors to boost the quality of Palestinian medical specialities through sponsoring the opportunity for a fellowship program at a Canadian university.

Islamic Relief supports the Palestinian Healthy Child Fellowship Program at SickKids. Through this project, we are able to bring Palestinian doctors passionate about paediatric care in Palestine to learn and work as fellows at SickKids Hospital. They are able to engage in potentially game-changing research and a top-tier education at SickKids. Alongside providing opportunities, this project ensures that we can continue to offer the best possible outcomes for children in Palestine, so they can live longer, healthier lives.

This project continues to address and respond to the gaps of services for Muslim families with complex needs and those at risk of violence through a Culturally Integrative Family Safety Response service model, in partnership with the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration in London, ON. Through spiritual support and faith-based guidance, along with the provision of professional mental health and social services, this project helps families and individuals who are struggling with mental health issues, family conflicts and family violence as well as stressors related to post-migration challenges.

Supported the implementation of Project Ramadan 2021, an initiative dedicated to supporting families in need within the local Greater Toronto Area communities. This project focuses on fundraising, assembling, and distributing baskets during the blessed time in Ramadan. Due to the increased food insecurity due to Covid-19, meals were provided to impacted families and individuals who experienced financial hardship due to unemployment and job loss. Families were able to receive warm meals to break their fast and ease the financial and psychological burden. Beneficiaries that received hot meals were young students, newcomers and refugee and low-income households. We partnered with local restaurants in multiple cities that provided halal option meals.

In partnership with Muslim Welfare Centre, we helped fulfill your Qurbani sacrifice locally in Canada, and distribute Qurbani meat packs to 3,000 vulnerable families across various parts of Ontario. For families who struggle to put food on the table, your Qurbani donations brought the joy of Eid to those in need.

Providing thousands of food packages for the unhoused in Toronto and Hamilton on a weekly basis, with a special focus on youth, newcomers, and Indigenous people, so that they have at least one nutritious meal twice a week. This project is in partnership with ASK Foundation, to supplement the efforts of many shelters and soup kitchens that are operating at full capacity. This includes creating better education around homelessness and poverty, as well as creating relationships with other service providers to better help those in need.

3 Months of Giving in British Columbia

Food Hampers for Edmonton

The ongoing pandemic and economic crisis have left countless Calgarians in hardship, resulting in an increase in the city’s homeless population. In collaboration with the Ahmed Abbas Foundation, the Islamic Relief chapter at the University of Calgary worked together to alleviate the struggles faced by the people of Calgary by providing them with snack packs. These snack packs consisted of various energy-providing foods, to bring comfort to the most vulnerable living without homes.

This project was in collaboration with the Muslim Food Bank and Community Services Society in order to feed 50 families across British Columbia for a duration of 3 months. We provided these families with food hampers containing kitchen staples to get them through their most vulnerable times. Each food hamper contained items such as sugar, oil, rice, meat, tea, dry beans, pasta, salt, and other nutritious essentials.

This project takes the initiative to help low-income families from newcomer and refugee communities build connections and address the root causes of their food insecurity. We are able to achieve this by giving them referrals to other community services like healthcare, transportation, settlement, and language. Additionally, we provide food hampers filled with nutritious food, to help alleviate financial pressures on low-income families. This way families are able to use their money to pay rent, utilities, childcare bills, and more.

Water for the Unhoused in Calgary

Mayor Crombie’s Thanksgiving Food Drive

Yukon University Refugee Sponsorship

Delivered water bottles in Calgary to support better access to clean fresh water for unhoused populations. This is in response to the heatwave in Calgary, as those that are unhoused and precariously living are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses and are suffering the most. Our regional team purchased 1,000 water bottles and delivered them to homeless shelters.

Islamic Relief Canada was a proud sponsor of Mayor Crombie’s Thanksgiving Food Drive, through which vulnerable families are provided with nutritious food items during the holiday season. This food drive is in collaboration with the Mississauga Food Bank, providing nutritious and appropriate food for two meals through their network of over 50 agencies.

Islamic Relief supports youth from Sudan and Syria through programming with World University Service of Canada (WUSC), a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to providing education, employment and empowerment opportunities to youth around the world. Through the Student Refugee Program at Yukon University, we provide private sponsorship guaranteeing, financial and personal settlement support for up to a year.

Entrepreneur Program for Refugee Women

Providing accessible and culturally relevant mental health support for low-income people, newcomers, and women experiencing domestic violence, among other vulnerable groups in the Ottawa region. In partnership with Muslim Family Services of Ottawa, this project facilitates counselling sessions by professionally trained counsellors, psychotherapists, and social workers to help respond to the grave shortage of culturally sensitive services in the Ottawa Muslim community.

Helping to support the operations of the Barakah Box food bank which provides monthly food packages to over 400 families in the Hamilton area, in partnership with Mishka Social Services. Food packages contain nutritious, Halal and culturally sensitive food to low-income and refugee or newcomer families who are in need of support.

Helping support the establishment of a self-sustainable and successful social enterprise that is owned and run by visible minority women. This initiative is focused on developing the capacity of this enterprise so that it can employ and provide income for refugee women, with the aim of improving the unemployment rate of these women along with their wellbeing and integration into society.

Afghan Refugee Resettlement Our work for the people of Afghanistan doesn’t stop at the borders. We’re committed to helping the Afghan people as they deal with extremely trying circumstances at the moment. Building Capacity at Willow’s Place

Fostering Healthy Families in Edmonton

Building capacity at the Amal Women’s Center for Transitional Services offers psychosocial support. The Amal Women’s Center provides free access to culturally-competent social workers and counsellors. Our project aimed to increase capacity through improving service delivery, this is done by evaluating, developing and formalizing the transitional services, both pre and/or post interventions. This is in response to the increased need and unique circumstances brought on by Covid-19. Through this project, we benefit the clients of the Amal Center for Women and indirectly, their families.

Working to help women in need find compassion, safety and the services that they need at Willow’s Place, in partnership with Mission Services Hamilton. This has been achieved by increasing staff capacity to permanently extend hours of opening, and increase services. This has meant that hundreds of new women were able to access Willow’s Place as a result, with thousands of meals and emergency packs provided, and more than 2,000 referrals made to community-based support for women experiencing violence. With some community programs and spaces still shut down, and not enough dedicated programming for women experiencing homelessness and poverty, Willow’s Place is filling an even larger gap than before.

This project supports victims of gender-based violence through an after-hours helpline staffed by trained social workers trained in spiritual and culturally sensitive coaching, through the Islamic Family & Social Services Association (IFSSA) in Edmonton. The project also supports those social workers and our clients with a clinical director and registered psychologist. The after-hours helpline especially helps to support victims of genderbased violence who can’t access the office.

Les Voisines Program for Vulnerable Women in Montreal

Caring Dads and Healthy Families

Hygiene Kits for Vulnerable Women

Ending homelessness means thinking differently and working together to find lasting solutions to a social problem that traps people in a state of perpetual emergency. In partnership with Old Brewery Mission, the Les Voisines Program helps women aged 18 and older who are unhoused to find refuge and safety so they can rebuild and regain control over their lives. This has meant that with your support, over 40 women have been able to leave chronic homelessness and regain autonomy.

This project intervenes with atrisk and/or abusive fathers and promotes healthy relationships and families, in collaboration with the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration in London, Ontario. This project is focused on raising fathers’ awareness of childcentred fathering and preventing the use of violence towards their children and the mothers of their children. Programming successfully shifted virtually due to Covid-19, by transitioning to online group sessions and one-to-one counselling sessions over the phone.

For International Women’s Day, Islamic Relief Canada assembled and distributed Women’s Hygiene Kits for clients of Hamilton Mission Services in Hamilton. We procured basic hygiene items and facilitated assembly builds for kits, while adhering to Covid-19 restrictions. Our teams delivered items to our local partners and used this project to empower the women supported. Hygiene kits included, shampoo, conditioner, lotion , sanitary pads, tampons, toothbrush, toothpaste, and face wipes.

Qurbani & Udhiya · Aqiqah Sharing the joy of Eid Al-Adha with families in need Qurbani & Udhiya is among the first programs started by Islamic Relief in 1986 and recurs every year when Muslims around the world commemorate Eid Al-Adha and sacrifice livestock to feed the needy. Our offices organized everything in advance to fulfill your sacrifice, including buying high-quality animals from local farms. On Eid, we ensured that your sacrifice was done humanely and hygienically. The meat was then immediately distributed to the most needy, without waste. Your generosity reached families right here at home in Canada, all around the world, and especially in conflict zones like Yemen and Syria.
