Crisis Background BANGLADESH
MYANMAR
Bangladesh is considered one of the most densely populated countries in the world with many people living in extreme poverty. After a major outbreak of violence in Myanmar in 2017, the country is also currently facing a crisis, after a sudden influx of 1 million Rohingya refugees who fled to the borders of Bangladesh. In camps across Cox’s Bazar, they are now living as refugees with inadequate shelter and limited access to food, sanitation and health facilities.
An estimated 500,000 people remain internally displaced and stranded in the Rakhine state of Myanmar. In addition to being forced out of their homes and living in displaced camps and villages, these vulnerable Rohingya families have lost access to basic services as well as their sources of income. They are also more prone to illness and food insecurity due to limited road access to and from hospitals, schools, markets and other socioeconomic activities.

Our Work in the Region BANGLADESH Since 1991, Islamic Relief has implemented many projects in Bangladesh within different sectors, including better access to clean water and hygiene, livelihood support, and disaster risk preparation. With the large number of Rohingya refugees seeking safety in Bangladesh, Islamic Relief is working on providing emergency relief to those affected by rehabilitating shelters, building sanitation points, distributing living essentials and food supplies, and creating safe spaces and programming for women and girls.
4
In Cox’s Bazar, we continue to assist refugees who are still undocumented, by enhancing and rehabilitating shelters to better suit their living needs. We also constructed toilets, and handwashing points, to ensure safe water and hygiene and prevent disease. We will be working closely with the communities there to help empower Rohingya women and adolescent girls to be able to meaningfully participate in community management, decisionmaking, and advocate for their rights.

On the Bhasan Char island, also known as Char Piya, we are working to provide emergency support for the Rohingya refugees that have been relocated from the mainland camps of Cox’s Bazar. At this point over 18,000 refugees have settled into newly constructed shelters, and are facing huge vulnerability due to limited access to food, health services, essential supplies, water, sanitation and hygiene awareness and practices.
Islamic Relief is committed to complementing existing governmental initiatives, and providing emergency response support. Additionally, our response on the island aims to address the food vulnerability and need for essential supplies such as gas for cooking.
Our Work in the Region MYANMAR Islamic Relief has been operating in Myanmar since 2008 supporting individuals through livelihood, education, water and sanitation, food distribution and health services. Since the Rohingya crisis, Islamic Relief introduced mobile health clinics to help stranded communities receive medical treatments, especially those who are unable to leave their homes.
MALAYSIA Additionally, our emergency response helps deliver aid to remote communities whenever and wherever conflict arises. Our efforts also include increasing health services and prevention awareness for diseases, improving mobility, and providing vocational training to youth to enhance income opportunities.
There are 102,020 Rohingya refugees currently in Malaysia. Malaysia allows refugees to stay in their country on humanitarian grounds until they are returned to their country of origin or moved to another host country. This means refugees do not integrate into Malaysian society, or have access to education and employment.
To combat this, Islamic Relief is committed to providing education for refugee children, ensuring accessibility to education and opportunities for higher learning. Our response in this region aims to educate children, equipping them with the necessary skills to create a dignified livelihood.

Emergency Life-Saving Support for Cox’s Bazar Camp Fires Responded to the massive fire that broke out damaging four camps in the Balukhali Refugee Camp that houses thousands of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. We provided immediate emergency support to those affected through Shelter, WASH and protection. Countless had lost their homes and were sleeping on the roadsides and in fields. Through this project, we constructed 16 permanent shelters, bamboo bridges, and repaired 3 roads. In order to maintain their dignity and restore sanitary solutions, hygiene kits were distributed, drainage systems were repaired and community sanitary latrines were constructed.
8
We are continuing to construct 152 transitional shelters for refugees, and 13 permanent shelters for the most vulnerable host community families. Permanent shelters will be a long term support for the host communities, ensuring protection for women and adolescent girls who are most at risk. These actions reduce health risks for the whole community while ensuring proper access to water, sanitation and hygiene facilities. This project also recognized children as the most vulnerable group in this devastating crisis, child friendly spaces were developed to ensure their safety and well being. BENEFICIARIES

Emergency Humanitarian Support in Cox’s Bazar
Capacity Building for Women in Cox’s Bazar
This response was focused on improving the living conditions of Rohingya refugees and host communities in Cox’s Bazar. This included building a shelter to provide safety and security for the refugees, along with handwashing stations, bathing facilities and latrines to give them a more dignified quality of life. Solar lighting was also installed to ensure safety for girls and women going to the sanitation facilities. Hygiene kits, PPE and essential supplies were also distributed to families, health staff and volunteers to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
This project helped to build the capacity of female first-responders and local female leadership in humanitarian responses, which is necessary to meet the needs of families across the camps. This was done through empowering Rohingya women and adolescent girls to be transformative leaders, through knowledge, skills and community training with cultural sensitivities in mind. Men, boys and leaders were also engaged to raise awareness and change harmful beliefs about women and girls. Through this project, women are able to meaningfully participate in community management and decision-making, as well as advocate for protecting the rights of Rohingya women and girls.

Ramadan Food Packs for Rohingya Refugees

Eid al-Fitr Gifts in Myanmar
Winter Season Support in Cox’s Bazar
With your support, we were able to provide food packs during Ramadan in Cox’s Bazar and bring relief during this blessed time. Your donations ensured that food supplies reached the poorest of the poor, and provided them with nutritious staples so that they did not go hungry. These food packs were dependent on the local diet and weighed an average of 29 kg, and included staple items such as rice, wheat, and oil.
With your vital support, Islamic Relief provided opportunities for those who can’t afford meat to receive the nutritional benefits of our Qurbani Meat Packet. We performed 750 Qurbani sacrifices in Bangladesh to distribute to the Rohingya people, as well as 300 Qurbanis within Myanmar. Each packet contained enough meat for a family of 4-8 people, for one week.
With your support, we provided Eid gifts in the form of new clothing to 1,000 orphans and vulnerable children in Myanmar. This helped make Eid a little better for them and let them know that someone is thinking about them.
Rohingya refugees faced a harsh winter season exacerbated by a war that has ravaged their homes, leaving them without any essential household items. The winters are cold with harsh winds tearing through limited shelters, incapable of protecting them from the season. People are at risk of getting sick in camps where illnesses are easily transmitted, making disease outbreaks a looming prospect.

BENEFICIARY TESTIMONIAL
Din Mohammed’s Story Din Mohammed lives on the island of Bhashan Char with his wife and four daughters. He said, “Ever since our relocation in Bhashan Char, I could only afford chicken twice. Though I could not buy any meat, if I buy meat then I won’t be able to purchase vegetables and other regular products for my children”. With very limited income opportunities as a day labourer, Din is constantly worried about providing for his family. With growing children, protein is essential for a healthy diet. He expressed his concerns saying, “Since all my children are growing, they need enough protein to build their muscle
and to be healthy. However, a lesser intake of protein causes various health problems for my children.” He is one of the countless refugees concerned about the well-being of their children and for the future that awaits them. The Qurbani meat distribution is one of the rare times families are able to have meat in the year. Din’s family have been beneficiaries of various Islamic Relief projects, including the Qurbani project. He was overjoyed with the Qurbani distribution this year, saying, “The meat pack was a blessing to us. All the family members relished meat after so long. Children
eagerly waited for the pack ever since they had heard about the distribution.” Along with a Qurbani meat pack, his family receives monthly food packs from Islamic Relief, Ramadan food packs, and clothing. They are able to sustain their diet throughout the year, have access to local staples during Ramadan, and new clothes to preserve their dignity on Eid. Islamic Relief continues to work on Bhasan Char, providing emergency aid, and staple food to the thousands of refugees currently living there.
Through your generous donations we are able to bring joy to families on Eid, nutritious meals, and ease the hearts of worried parents, as they are able to feed their children for another month. Your support changes the lives of countless vulnerable families.
