Dear Editor, As most readers will be aware, income tax is charged on all company profits at the company rate before such profits are distributed to shareholders.

Consequently, all dividends have already been taxed at he company rate prior to receipt by shareholders. Then, following submission of the shareholder’s annual tax return, a refund or credit is calculated depending on the individual circumstances. This simple and effective system to minimise tax evasion operates in many countries throughout the world.

To suggest that shareholders are not entitled to a refund because they have paid no tax is patently untrue, since the tax has been previously paid by the company, on the shareholder’s behalf.

It is sad that the present leaders of the Labor Party seem either unable or unwilling to grasp this simple fact.

In common with many other pensioners, my wife and I hold a small investment in shares to provide part of our retirement income. As a consequence, we shall be adversely affected if the changes to the taxing of dividends, currently proposed by the Labor Party, are adopted. Since my wife’s annual income is below the tax threshold, she is currently entitled to a refund of the tax, which has been paid on her dividend. Consequently, we are appalled that a major political party would seriously argue that she should no longer receive this entitlement. It is somewhat akin to denying a refund of pay-as-you-go tax to someone whose annual income later falls below the tax threshold.

Some months ago we wrote to the paper regarding changes to the assets test for pensioners, which substantially reduced our part-pension. We are still suffering the effects of that change to the rules upon which we based our retirement planning and could do without any further losses. No doubt other pensioners would agree.

This has caused quite a lot of angst simply because many group members rely on the notices to keep up to date with the the nature, venue and timings of activities. Indeed, there have been quite a few instances brought to my attention of members turning up on the wrong day or time for an activity when an item notifying vital changes was not published. Approaches to have the publication concerned revert to previous policy of publishing every notice received have been unsuccessful.

I notice that your newspaper does not have a Community News section and I would ask that you give serious consideration to implementing such a service. My group would contribute to each issue an item publicising a past activity and an item covering future activities, particularly in the knowledge that your paper has the widest circulation of all local newspapers. I am sure that many more dissatisfied locals also would contribute to such a service.

Large Gum Tree Branch Falls on Stall Holders and Crowd on Sunday at Brenan Park Markets.

An enormous Gum Tree Branch fell off in Brennan Park on a stall last Sunday at the Markets, injuring 5 people. The crowd heard a big crack and before they could blink the Home-grown banana stall and 5 people were trapped under the rubble of branches just missing other stalls.

Rotary members and other stall holders ran to assist the injured. The Ambulances’ were there with in minutes to treat the injured, along with the police and fire rescue.

One person had head injuries not known how serious it was and another with

a broken collarbone with the rest being minor injuries. A few of the injured were taken away to hospital.

It was the busiest time for the Sunday markets at Brennan Park, it happened around mid-morning. From the size of the branch that fell on top the stall, they were very lucky that no more people were injured and even luckier that no one was killed.

When Luke Kitchin was invited down from where he was working in the Whitsundays to have a look around Bribe Island almost 20 years ago with the aim of opening his first restaurant, Luke was amazed at the beauty of Bribie Island and the blank canvas that lay in front of him. At the time, Luke recalls imagining that Noosa must have been like Bribie Island 15 years earlier. Today, almost 20 years on, we meet the man himself to talk food, business, family, Bribie Island and to try to extract his secret Chilli Plum Prawn Recipe. The most remarkable aspect about meeting passionate professionals is their overwhelming willingness to share knowledge and stories and to welcome you into their lives. I will admit that Luke and I have crossed paths over the years which made for a warm and respectful catchup. As is custom with most Hospitality Professionals, as soon as I arrived Luke hastily located the nearest espresso machine and prepared each of us a delicious Café Latte as we chatted – my expectations were immediately exceeded.

We caught up together at the Oaks Hotel on the Sunshine Coast, Luke’s home away from home where he performs his role as Director of Food and Beverage and undertakes some consulting across the Oakes Hotel Network to support the development of efficient food and beverage business units.

Although Luke’s birth certificate reads, born in Launceston, Luke’s mum and dad relocated his sister and himself to Queensland almost 42 years ago when Luke was 2 years old. Luke was raised and schooled predominately at Palm Beach on the Golf Coast where both his mum and dad operated successful businesses within the retail and car repair industries. Luke said, “I loved my life on

the Gold Coast and have always enjoyed the game of golf in my spare time.

When I finished year 10, I was given two options, either I find a trade or head back to school. My first option was to locate a Building Trade Apprenticeship and when that did not eventuate, I was faced with the prospect of digging out the old school uniform which by this stage was ready for the trash bin,” he said. “Fortunately, I also had a desire to join the food industry and thankfully the Twin Town Services Club at Coolangatta agreed to offer me an apprenticeship as part of their annual recruitment. I was accepted as one of 17 new Apprentice Chefs and completed my trade in 1994 across the Twin Towns Services Club locations which provided a diverse and outstanding basis for a new chef.”

Over the years since 1994, Luke has studied the art of designing, preparing and cooking food across the world. As a young chef, Luke travelled and honed his fine dining experiences across the UK, Scotland, Indonesia and the Queensland Whitsunday Islands. Luke said, “I wanted to travel and open my eyes to the world of fine dining and develop my cooking techniques. I worked hard abroad and was privileged to obtain roles at Iggs Restaurant and the Michelin Star Restaurant, The Rock both in Scotland.

When I finally returned to Australia, I felt that my food knowledge and skills were at a point where I could take on larger and diverse roles.” After Luke returned to Australia, he was fortunate to achieve considerable success working his way up to the role as Executive Chef at Mariners Seafood Restaurant on

Thanks to a partnership with Peter and Sandie Snell, Luke was able to develop and launch his first restaurant on Bribie, Latte on First in 2002. The restaurant was a great success and allowed Luke to expand his business into a second location on Bribie Island. Luke’s restaurant won the Moreton Bay Regional Best Fine Dining Award for two years which was testament to the menus and service provided by the team at Latte of First. As with every hospitality business, you are required to inject sustained levels of energy to maintain the daily focus and meet customers’ expectations.

Luke said, “It was tough running two restaurants. One of the challenges that I faced was that people wanted to see me when they visited and if I was not cooking, it did not have the desired result,” he said. “In the end I decided to downsize and open a smaller one-man brigade at Woorim on Bribie Island. This allowed me to re-set my energy levels and see where me next opportunity may come.” It was at that point Luke was approached by Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club. Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club could see the value and strong customer following that Luke had created. Luke’s move to Pacific Harbour had the desired result and provided Luke with the opportunity to design and deliver outstanding food experiences for a growing market within the new Pacific Harbour development on the northern aspect of Bribie Island. It also provided Luke with an opportunity to utilize his gift of developing and analysing business units within a corporate environment which Luke has been able to take to his current food and beverage role.

It has been said that beside every passionate human being is a great friend and supporter and Luke Kitchin has forged a friendship and lifetime bond with his wife and confident of almost 10 years, Kristen. Kristen and Luke have a few things in common including a devoted love for each of their blended family of 5 children; a love of their home; a love of cooking and learning together and a love for a future. Kristen said, “Luke is one of the most passionate people I have come across in my life.

When you task him with something he will ensure that it is completed to a standard above all else,” she said. “He is a perfectionist, and this is shown through his passion for food and the level of excellence he prides himself on. One of his favourite chefs is Marco Pierre White, and Luke also loves the infamous quotes that Marco shares. One of Luke favourite quotes by Marco is, “At the end of the day, it’s just food, isn’t it, just food.” I love to cook at home and Luke is the easiest person to cook for. He does not expect restaurant quality meals and loves a home-cooked meal; however, he has taught me how to be a better cook by teaching me different skills and techniques. Luke believes that mealtimes

I always say to respect your food product and don’t over complicate cooking or life.

If you are cooking a fish fillet, season and grill the fish but don’t disrespect the fish by changing the taste or flavour of the fish. Compliment your fish or piece of beef beside a fresh Asian Infused Salad and bring those flavours together as you choose.

Q: If you were to dine out for a special meal, where would you go and why?

It’s tough to go past Aria in Brisbane.

I would like to fly down to Sydney to visit the original Aria by Matt Moran.

In saying this, I never dine out with expectations – I am real about what anyone should expect – once we choose where we dine, we enjoy the company and appreciate the effort taken to cook the food.

Q: Do you think you would have made for a great builder as you are a great chef?

When Luke first arrived on Bribie Island almost 20 years ago, Luke felt that Bribie could take off like Noosa. As he opened his first restaurant, he was at the forefront of the Bribie Food Culture change. While there were some comparisons to Noosa back in the 1980’s, the Noosa Food and Wine and Accommodation Developers had the added benefit of being surrounded by over five stunning north facing surf beaches, ocean view national park walking trails and a bridgeless waterway. Nevertheless, Bribie Island has grown significantly over the past decade and Luke believes that the best is yet to come through a combination of generational change and investment in food culture. Luke said, “We have already seen the enormous positive impact with the evolution of the Sandstone Point Hotel and Entertainment infrastructure.

Deep down I hope that one day that I will be part of a new push to expand the dining experiences in the Bribie Island region.”

It was a pleasure the have a chat with Luke. If I have taken anything away from my time with Luke it is this. If you want a straight, honest, accurate and generous conversation about food and life, ask Luke Kitchin – you won’t be disappointed with his expertise, passion and stories, but you will never extract his Chilli Plum Prawn Sauce Recipe.

Q&A Q: They say that the food experience is all in the sauce. What is the basis for a good sauce?

The base for any good Jus or sauce needs to start from a brilliant base. My Jus takes 48 hours to cook and requires attention through the process from start to finish - from roasting of the bones to deglazing the roasting trays. The correct amounts of ingredients - the reduction and the balance of flavours, I pride myself on hand making my Jus, sauces and bases, nothing comes from a packet although now sadly 95% of products come from packets or processed products.

Q: Why do you think your Chilli Plum Prawn recipe is so unique?

Fresh prawns are the key to this dish.

The sauce is a combination of a balance of sweet, spice & flavour. If you are to measure the value of a chef, it is their ability to respect the product, prepare patiently and create flavours and know when a flavour is great. I was born with the gift of taste and creativity and have developed many awesome recipes, one of which is my Chilli Plum Sauce – it’s unique.

Luke and Damian Q: What makes Bribie Island such a special place to live?

We have lived in our Bribie Home for 10 years this year and I can’t image anywhere else to live. I enjoy helping my neighbours with his yard, grooming my lawn and hanging out with my family.

I will always have a burning desire to create my own style of food and share this with my community through a restaurant or food outlet. I think that the important thing is to be open minded on your life journey and make good decision in the interests of you family and myself.

When I first arrived at Bribie Island, there were only 2 stand-alone restaurants and today there are about 8 plus the club options that were also on Bribie when I first arrived. I think that there is a place for a more diverse Seafood and Asian influenced food outlet on Bribie Island.

Strangely enough, I would love to operate a specialist restaurant that operated Monday to Thursday, so I can enjoy my family across the weekend – maybe that’s unrealistic but you never know.

I love playing golf. I am also a major fan of V8 Supercars and Lowndes but nothing makes me prouder than watching my son compete in motocross.

Q: How do you get kids to eat good food?

I believe that you need to have commonalities and be prepared to share an open love for life, family and community.

It’s always a challenge. I think that you need to be creative in how you use your food for kids. The biggest success to eating well is to involve children in cooking and educate the kids and you will see they become more responsive to

We all get caught up in the day to day life, but we need to focus on our loved ones, the ones that are there day in day out with un-conditional love for each.

Whilst work is important nothing is more important in life than our loved ones.

Election of office bearers was quickly followed by a summary of activities since the new club’s inception in 2017.

Re-elected President, Bob Prosser, thanked his committee and all the volunteers who had worked so hard to get the new club off the ground.

A steady stream of new members had ensured the club has a strong basis going forward, and with the excellent condition of the bowls green, more members were expected to be joining the club soon.

“We hope to double our membership within the next few months as bowlers recognise we are a growing club and come to learn of our reduced membership fees,” Bob said.

“We have an increasing number of competition days on the weekly calendar and some very exciting tournaments planned over coming months.”

Another win for Bribie Toastmaster

Bushfire Hazard Reduction Burns will continue to be undertaken by Council with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services in the coming months to help reduce fuel loads ahead of fire season. Residents are notified of planned burns in their area via letterbox drops, MoretonAlert messages and via local media outlets including radio stations.

The newly formed Moreton Division of Toastmasters International held their first conference on Saturday the 24th of February in the Albany Creek Community Centre.

If you see a fire and are unsure if it is a planned burn, you can the list of planned burns on Council’s website before reporting it to Triple Zero (000).

Area 3 which includes Bribie Toastmasters, Caboolture Toastmasters and Kilcoy Toastmasters were represented by Cathy McGillivray from Bribie Toastmasters in the Humorous and International contests, Del Parminter in the Evaluation Contest and Alison Lamb from Caboolture Toastmasters in the Table Topics contest.

With 19 Toastmaster clubs from five areas represented at the conference and speech contests the audience certainly had a wide and entertaining range of speeches and competitions to enjoy.

All the contests were of such a high standard that the judges were given a tough task to come up with winners who would then go on to represent the Moreton Division at the District 69 conference and speech contests held in April.

While Cathy McGillivray from Bribie Toastmasters did not win the Humorous contest this year, she did go on to win the prestigious International Contest which is always the highlight of any Toastmasters speech contest.

Cathy will now compete on April 28th at the Toastmasters District 69 conference against competitors from NSW, Northern Territory, Queensland and Papua New Guinea. If Cathy is successful and wins the International contest at Ipswich she will then be flying to Chicago, USA in August of this year to represent Division 69 and of course her club Bribie Toastmasters.

Cathy has only been learning public speaking at Bribie Toastmasters for 3 years and praises the members of Bribie Toastmasters for always being incredibly supportive. Cathy is adamant that without the wonderful encouragement, knowledge and support from everyone in the club, and especially the 2011 World Champion Jock Elliott, she would never be able to compete or even speak in public. “I am incredibly lucky to belong to such a friendly and wonderful club who are always there to help everyone become the best speaker and leader they can be” Cathy said “I’m ridiculously excited and terrified at the same time to be competing at such a high level”.

If you are interested in improving your public speaking then come along to a Bribie Toastmasters meeting. The meetings are held at 7pm for a 7.15pm start, on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month in the ANZAC room of the Bribie Island RSL. Guests are more than welcome!

SUSAN LAMB AT BEACHMERE Susan Lamb, Federal Member for Longman, attended Beachmere Area Network Group’s March Social meeting at Beachmere RSL recently.

Susan addressed a number of issues including the upgrade to the Bruce Highway, the Caboolture Hospital carpark, Medicare funding and her ongoing work to get additional Medicare funded MRI machines into the Moreton Bay region.

Two key areas which caused ongoing discussion throughout the evening were problems with the NBN and local telephone black spots and the recently announced Labour policy of stopping the payment of imputation credits.

Those attending the evening were happy with the robust discussion.

“Our elected officials get out into the Beachmere community on a regular basis because it’s important that everyone gets a chance to meet the people who

make decisions on their behalf.” BANG President Karen Harris said.

“Whatever level of government they represent, they can’t carry a message forward if we don’t tell them what that message should be.”

Asbestos roofs put South East neighbourhoods at risk Queenslander’s are inadvertently putting their neighbour’s lives at risk by using high pressure water blasters on asbestos roofs.

The Queensland Government is warning homeowners to take caution following three reports in the last three weeks.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles said homeowners in Burpengary, Salisbury and Toowoomba had been reported for potentially releasing hazardous asbestos fibres into neighbouring properties, posing a serious public health risk to the community.

“It is illegal to use a high pressure water blaster on asbestos cement roofs, fences, walls and other asbestos containing materials,” Mr Miles said.

“Water blasters can destroy the surface of asbestos-containing materials, which can release asbestos fibres into the air, putting yours and your neighbours’ health at risk.

“Homeowners can be fined up to $10,000 for using a water blaster on asbestoscontaining materials, and are liable for all clean-up costs. Just last year, a homeowner in the South East was forced to pay a $100,000 clean-up bill.

“Asbestos is perfectly safe if it’s in good condition and left alone, but it can be very dangerous if disturbed.

“Asbestos fibres cannot be seen by the naked eye, but if inhaled, they can become lodged in the lungs, where they can develop into diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.”

“Looking around most Queensland neighbourhoods, you’ll see pre 1990 homes meaning there’s a pretty good chance there’s asbestos somewhere in the building,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Undisturbed it won’t affect you however we all do home maintenance from time to time meaning we’ve all got to be careful.

“Have a look up and if your roof is made from corrugated cement sheeting, there’s a chance it contains asbestos, so the rule is play it safe and engage expert tradespeople.

“Even though you can handle very small amounts on your own - why would you risk it? If you do there are rules to handling small amounts that you need to follow.

“Whether you’re a homeowner, DIY renovator or a tradie, my advice is find out if and where asbestos is located and the regulations around working with the dangerous materials, before starting your project.

“If you believe a homeowner, occupant or owner-builder is unsafely handling, removing or transporting asbestos material or a person has illegally dumped asbestos waste, contact your local Council and stay clear of the material.

“The management of asbestos in nonworkplaces is the responsibility of local governments under public health legislation.”

State Government Bribie Island smashes small business with taxes Probus Changes Shadow Minister for Small Business Fiona Simpson says the Labor Government’s failure to model the impacts of its new taxes on small business is reckless.

Ms Simpson asked Minister for Small Business Shannon Fentiman today whether she had insisted modelling of impacts on small business was done before signing off on new taxes.

“No new taxes should be considered without considering all impacts,” Ms Simpson said.

“Taxes that will particularly hurt small businesses must be given the utmost scrutiny.

“Small businesses are the state’s biggest jobs creators and are often run by mums and dads.

“The Labor Minister for Small Business Shannon Fentiman refused to stand up for small business by failing to ensure modelling of the impacts was done before approving new taxes.

“The Labor Government has a don’t ask, don’t know, don’t care attitude about tax impacts on small business.

“Labor taxes first and asks questions later.”

Ms Simpson also asked Treasurer Jackie Trad last month whether modelling for small businesses had been done in relation to higher land tax.

“The Treasurer admitted no modelling was undertaken into the impacts a higher land tax hike will have on small businesses,” Ms Simpson said.

“The Treasurer doesn’t understand there are many small businesses who are paying land tax as part of their outgoings under commercial leases.

“For the State Government to be introducing new taxes without modelling their impacts on small business is reckless and irresponsible.”

Solander Bowls Club hosts a fundraising day for a Banksia Beach house Fire Victim A house fire on 23/3/2018 in Banksia Beach claimed the life of Darren Westcott.

He left behind a partner Hollie Taylor and a young family without insurance on the house. As both were members of Solander Lake Bowls club, the members rallied together and are organising a breakfast bowls day on Sunday the 22nd of April.

The cost is $12 for a game of bowls and breakfast. There will be over $1500 worth of donated prizes for raffles run on the day.

Proceeds will go to Hollie and the family.

The local community have come together to help Hollie to return to her fire damaged home, with the majority of supplies and labour being donated. Members of the club, neighbours and others have been busy removing damaged items and cleaning the house. There are too many people to list, so thanks to all who are helping.

Council leases give berth to Bribie boat clubs The search for a site to house boats for two of Bribie’s largest community boating clubs is now over thanks to a pair of community leases from Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Stench surrounds Labor’s link to recycling firm

The Maritime Safety Military Cadets and Bribie Island Boating Club will each receive a lease for new fenced compounds near the boat ramp at Sylvan Beach Esplanade, Bellara after both clubs approached Division 1 Councillor Brooke Savige and council last year for assistance.

“Prior to this new leasing arrangement, both clubs stored their boats at members’ houses, making it difficult to transport the boats to and from activities,” Cr Savige said.

“Council was able to work with the local Volunteer Marine Rescue and the state government to identify an area of land that could be used by the clubs, and I’d like to acknowledge everyone for their efforts in bringing these leases to fruition.

“The new leases will offer both clubs an area approximately 450m2 in size that is easily accessible to the water and large enough to store their boats.

Cr Savige said the both clubs would now join more than 250 other community organisations across the Moreton Bay Region participating in council’s community leasing program.

“Council’s community leasing program offers low-cost opportunities for community groups to manage and utilise our region’s facilities, and is a brilliant example of how council continues to support organisations across the Moreton Bay Region through unique initiatives.”

Liberal National Party Leader Deb Frecklington is calling on Labor to hand back a political donation it received from a recycling company it is using to spruik its waste levy.

Suez Recycling and Recovery this week backed Labor’s latest tax at a press conference held by Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch.

But the Minister didn’t reveal that Suez had donated $11,000 to Labor on March 16.

“This donation puts a massive stench around Labor’s new waste tax,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Labor has pocketed a political donation from a company that will profit from the waste tax just days before Cabinet approved the measure.

“Labor have sold out Queensland households and put their donors first.

“I call on the Premier to clean up her government and hand this donation back.”

Ms Frecklington said the introduction of Labor’s waste levy had been an example of government at its worst.

“This tax has been dreamt up on the run,” Ms Frecklington said.

“The Minister doesn’t even know what she’s planning to tax – this week she claimed tyres would not be taxed and then had to correct herself in Parliament.

Week 4 – Monday 30th – 6th May – Courage (Full Moon) Have the courage to let go of things that no longer serve you to allow space for new and exciting opportunities. This time honoring how you feel about people, experiences and old stories. A moment to truly decide what you want in your world & also what is holding you back. This time is about culling away the old to give space for the new. And this can be done by the polar opposite. SOGGY BIG PICTURES Yesterday, as I peeled my sodden socks from my feet and poured water from my boots, I wondered why I had thought that going for a motorcycle ride on a day when it was guaranteed to rain was going to be fun. Anyone seeing us standing in our garage at the end of the ride would have wondered why we loved riding so much. We were cold, our fingers were wrinkly from the water inside our gloves, our leathers would probably take days to dry and all we wanted was a hot shower – why do this?

You see the person looking at us wouldn’t be able to see our big picture. They couldn’t see the great ride through to Kenilworth to meet old friends and make new ones. They didn’t hear the laughter of us enjoying a common interest that made us happy and relaxed. They didn’t see us testing our abilities as we rode through rain soaked hills keeping close in a pack to protect each other and ensure our safety, and they didn’t see our final coffee stop and goodbye hugs celebrating our enjoyment of a day full of memories. Yes, that’s the big picture I “saw” as I stood soggy, wrinkly and cold in the garage.

Big pictures are incredibly important in

fitness too, and a lot of the time our friends and family can’t see the big pictures that being fit and healthy create, they only see the time taken away from them in snapshots.

When it comes to improving your health and fitness what most people “see” is the 30 mins spent with a personal trainer or an hour in a circuit class, the meal choices and the “time for me to go for a walk” and they think “ it’s so time consuming!!!”.

Actually no it’s not! Even if you did the training, a class and then went for an hour walk later in the day (which isn’t what we expect our clients to do) that’s still only 2 hours out of your entire day, and you have to eat anyway so just make it a healthy choice, it’s hardly consuming your entire life is it?

So what would your big picture look like if you did just some exercise every day? You would be stronger and more confident, have more energy and less stress, you will sleep better, your clothes would fit you better, you would be happier and more social. Most likely your blood pressure would decrease and your

SENIOR GENTLE WEIGHTED EXERCISES Before You Start!

Senior Gentle Weighted Exercises Before You Start – we need some weight Your body is a perfect “weight” to start using as resistance and then you can add extra weight with water bottles or rice bags.

One of the best and cheapest “hand weights” you can get is a 500ml bottle of water. You could also use a Heat Pillow that are usually filled with rice and are used for placing a heat pack on an area. A full 500ml bottle of water weighs 500grms (1/2kg) If you find this is too heavy then just have a drink and it will weigh less. As your strength increases you can increase the water or add a little sand to increase the weight. Use a stable chair to sit in, wear flat bottomed shoes so when you stand up you will be balanced. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these exercises stop! Start slowly with each exercise and give your body time to adjust to doing something new. It is not a race to the finish!

You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others.

That is ok! Really! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are the type of gentle strength exercise we do in our Heartmoves classes, except we use small bean bags and resistance bands instead. If you have a resistance band or tube you can use that instead of the water bottle. Take each exercise slowly and carefully. Remember, strength training is a great way to increase bone density.

Strong muscles will help with your balance and mobility but do need to be done regularly. Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will give you improvement in strength over time. So use your chair put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

SHOULDER PRESS

Sit up tall in a comfortable stable chair that is not too low or too soft. Hold a plastic bottle containing about 500 ml of water with your right hand. Raise your right arm and keep it straight.

Return slowly to the starting position. Perform only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Change hands and repeat with your left arm.

You may find that one arm can do more lifts than the other, this is quiet common and there is no need to force each arm to complete the same number of lifts Repeat twice more with each arm if possible Rest

LEG EXTENSIONS

Sit up tall in a comfortable stable chair that is not too low or too soft.

Place a small sandbag or rice bag over your ankle.

Slowly raise your leg and stretch it forward as far as possible with your foot slightly bending upward. Return slowly to the starting position.

Perform 10 times then swap legs. You may find that one legcan do more lifts than the other, this is quiet common and there is no need to force each leg to complete the same number of lifts Repeat twice more with each leg if possible Rest

SIT AND STAND Stand in front of a comfortable stable chair that is not too low or too soft. Hold a water bottle in both hands Keep your hands out in front of you and slowly as you can sit down onto the chair. Rest for the count of five seconds then slowly stand back up keeping your hands holding the water bottle out in front of you Do as many as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Repeat three times if possible Rest

UPRIGHT ROWS

Start by doing this exercise without the water bottles, then if you find this easy you can then hold the bottles while performing the exercise. With your thumbs close together, hold your hands in front of you holding a water bottle in each hand. Try and keep the end of the bottles touching each other. Keeping the bottles touching and close to your body. Raise the bottles up towards your chin, and stick your elbows out away from your body. Bring elbows up to as close to shoulder height as you comfortably can. Hold for the count of “one and two”, keep the end of the bottles touching and slowly lower bottles back to starting position repeat 10 times if possible. Repeat three times slowly only do as many as you feel comfortable with. Rest

Before we went for our ride we had a celebration breakfast for the end of our Put Your Money Where Your Mouth IS 12 week challenge, with our participants losing a total of 91.1kgs!

Our winner Peter dropped 16.1kgs and 15.28% of his bodyweight! At the end of each challenge I ask all the participants what they thought was the best thing about doing the challenge and you would think that they would say “weight loss” but that wasn’t their big pictures. The resounding answers were more strength and confidence, stress relief and a lifestyle change that has impacted on their families. Ohhhh and yes they all lost weight.

Everyone’s big picture is different, so it can be hard for families and friends to understand why you suddenly need to change your lifestyle. During the past 12 weeks the big pictures for some of our participants changed dramatically, jobs were changed, houses were sold, relationships changed and family health issues impacted on the participants while they were all just trying to spend a little time concentrating on their own big picture.

Yes you may end up soggy with sweat, yes you will have times when you wonder why you thought it would be a good idea, and yes you will never be able to make some people understand why you love it so much, but we will guarantee you that you will also have laughter, friendship, the joy of being able to achieve things you never thought possible, the wonder of watching your body change and the belief in yourself when you have an amazing big picture to admire for ever.

Water is an essential nutrient that your body requires for basic functioning. Being essential means that we do not produce it ourselves and we therefore need it in our daily intake. Your body is made up of 2/3 water, and needs to excrete approximately 500ml per day.

Its functions are to carry nutrients to the cells of your body; to carry waste out of your body- through the skin, lungs and urine; to act as a solvent for certain minerals, vitamins, amino acids, glucose (as opposed to them being fat soluble)affecting their storage, absorption and excretion. Water is a lubricant and helps cushion joints, the eye, the spinal cord and the amniotic sac. It regulates body temperature and maintains blood volume.

As a general rule we require 30ml of water per kg of body weight per day. Eg. if you weigh 70kg, you should be having 2.1 litres of water per day. Of course, this requirement increases during excessive loss through sweating from exercise, hot temperatures etc.

The body has an amazing ability to warn you if your water intake is inadequate.

To maintain a good water habit, invest in a nice water bottle -glass or stainless steel, that makes you excited to use it (it’s the simple things). Be mindful of how many mls it contains and know how many bottles you need per day. Try not to drink water with meals as it will dilute your stomach acid, interfering with digestion. Water intake can also be gained through non- caffeinated herbal teas, and fruits and vegetables with a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, celery, lettuce, apples, oranges, grapes. If you are needing a little extra taste try adding a splash of lemon, lime, mint, or ginger to your water. Drink up!

Hi-tech detection and protection in place this flu season

Mr Miles said the Palaszczuk Government was also tackling the flu wave head-on with free vaccinations for children under five.

“Up to 300,000 kids under five will be eligible for a free flu vaccine,” Mr Miles said.

New technology that diagnoses the flu faster and more accurately is being rolled out with the first of 15 machines now installed at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

“We urge people of all ages to get vaccinated, however younger children are particularly susceptible, as we saw last year when more than 580 kids under five years old were hospitalised due to flu.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles said rapid point-ofcare testing screens for influenza A and B strains and could provide results within 30 minutes.

“This free vaccine will be made available through GPs and other childhood immunisation providers.”

“Last year’s flu season was horrendous.

We saw more than 56,000 laboratory confirmed cases across Queensland, an increase from 23,000 the previous year,” Mr Miles said.

Rapid point-of-care testing will be in operation at: • Gold Coast University Hospital • Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital • Townsville Hospital

“Point-of-care testing will be rolled out to 15 hospital’s across the state by April.

“The testing is very efficient in confirming or ruling out flu in patients,” Dr Young said.

Cranky Lizard does so in the month of April, the month of the ANZACS, the same month, many decades ago now, when a young nation, Australia, together with New Zealand, committed themselves on the gruesome, international stage of the World War I in general, and the Peninsular of Gallipoli in Turkey, in particular.

Cranky Lizard wonders whether the depth of brilliant academic talent and leadership that was tapped from Australian Universities at that time, would be available today ?

Why ?

Simply because Australian Universities are not the places they used to be !

Places of academic and intellectual rigour and excellence ? Sure, they used to be like that, sure they did ! But not now.

Any worthwhile examination must begin at the beginning ; now I know that sounds redundant, but we need to be sure of where to start because this subject, Ladies and Gentlemen, is very, very tricky. For some people, examining ‘ political correctness ‘ is like criticising the Bible or the Koran !

Whilst for others, the importance of the ‘ political correctness ‘ model, is selfevident and any critical examination of it, is bordering upon heresy and most certainly indicates moral turpitude on behalf of the examiner, that’s me !!

Some certainty, to the early use of the term ‘ politically correct ‘ is gained from the Professor Emeritus of International Relations at Boston University, Professor Angelo M. Codevilla, who proposed that the term ‘ politically correct ‘ had its beginnings in the tortured pathways of the logic of Communism and Socialism in the 1930’s !!

I quote from his paper ; “ Comrade, your statement is factually incorrect.” “ Yes, but it is politically correct. “ “ This means, of course, that the Party’s interest is to be treated as a reality that ranks above reality itself !! “ Note that : a politically correct statement is to be treated as a reality that ranks above reality itself.

Think very carefully about this, Folks, we are being asked, indeed, encouraged, to abandon reality and move to another plane of existence ; a place where there is no reality…a place where the major definitions of life no longer exist.

But, how did this distorted nonsense slime its way into our daily lives, our existence, our language ?

It began, as most matters social, political and linguistic always do, in our Universities, where the urge to slavishly follow the dictats of socialism is rampant : a wave of contempt, for the values of our society – Christianity, personal responsibility, the importance

your soul and spin you into worlds of untold wonder and magic. It is not the English language that is in question here ; it is not the English language that is being examined ! No Sir !

Ideologues carried the infection from the Nations’ campuses into the public domain and from there into the structure of our corporate and Government language.

Has anyone read a Job Advertisement for a position in a State or Federal Government lately ?? Can you make sense of the convoluted language which describes a position which ultimately is defined as ‘ general clerk ‘ ??

Not many from outside the Government can, or want to !

The University of Sydney Debating Team comprises ‘ wom*n ‘, that is how they spell it and some mysterious, shape shifting creatures called ‘ cismen ‘. This rubbish is defended by the University as being necessary to conform to expectations of the Diversity Council of Australia. You can seek this mob out, by going on line…you can make your own judgements about them, what they do and how they help the country.

Cranky Lizard is quite clear about the role of the Diversity Council and its contribution to Australian life… an expensive indulgence of little consequence. This body is not funded by the Australian taxpayer, it is funded by contributions from major corporate institutions who then turn those contributions into tax claims , and thus, in a round-about fashion, still stick the taxpayer with the bill !!

All this dodgy, self- indulgence with our language glides about in the rare atmosphere of the upper echelon hallways of our corporate, Federal and State Government bodies.

It seeps, similar to creeping fungi, into our education system, our media and our public discussion ; from there it commences its distorting journey into the tiny, rabbit-trap like minds of the bureaucratic zealots, who love nothing more than to vigorously prosecute this literary ‘ fairy floss ‘.

Cranky Lizard is not condemning all those who hold positions within Local, State or Federal Governments, those

of you who work in those places, and who read this, will know exactly whom I describe. Every office, every corporate tea room has a resident zealot ; you will know that and who it is !!

It is axiomatic that languages are dynamic and must change to suit the developments of a modern world and the challenges of describing technology.

Cranky Lizard’s father lived in a time where words such as ‘ on-line’, cybersecurity’, ‘ internet ‘, simply did not exist. He had no experience of these things, he lived in an Australia which was very different and, maybe, better.

So, Cranky Lizard has no issue with language dynamics ; the English language in its written and spoken form is a beautiful medium – it can capture

With Rotary represented in 220 countries around the world, Australia is perhaps down the list of priorities, but an opportunity to visit would always be welcome.

A visit was planned with many official duties to be performed, and several other countries to visit on the busy itinerary.

It was such an honour for the International President to include in his schedule a visit to little old Bribie Island to present an Award.

March 2018 marks the 30-year Anniversary of the founding of Rotary Club of Bribie Island, chartered in 1988 with 20 members by the Caboolture Rotary Club.

Caboolture Rotary President Riana Botha outlined the 30-year History of Bribie Island Rotary and some of the many local and International projects to which they had donated over one million dollars.

The International President then presented Bribie Island’s current President Jeff Eustace with a recognition Award.

The 35 members of Bribie Rotary in attendance then had a group photo taken to capture this significant event.

Local Builder from Beachmere was Awarded International Travel Scholarship

The Governor of Queensland giving Joshua Merritt his international travel scholarship award Local Builder from Beachmere last month was presented with a prestigious Queensland Overseas Foundation (QOF) Scholarship which will enable him to work overseas.

The Governor of Queensland and QOF Patron, His Excellency the Honourable Paul De Jersey AC, presented the award a t Parliament House to 22-year-old Joshua Merritt.

Joshua’s Award is the first Scholarship awarded under the newly created CSQ Building and Construction Industry – QOF Scholarship category which has come about through a partnership between Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) and the QOF. Josh currently works for Maxbuild Constructions on the Sunshine Coast completed a Certificate III in Carpentry with Blue Dog Training and a Certificate IV in building and construction with Training and Assessment solutions (TAS).

Josh said, “He would use the Scholarship to travel to Italy where I hope to reconnect with my Italian family heritage and gain valuable work experience in my talent, I will learn new techniques and experience also, while working with different materials, It will be a completely different culture and environment, which will be great for me.”

“The CSQ and QOF Scholarship will help me gain access to building and construction practices and materials that I might not otherwise be able to experience and support to our network of apprentices in Queensland” “Dedicated Scholarships like these mean so much to our industry and we can help provide better training opportunities from all over the world. It will also help mentor apprentices and increase the skilling ability of the Queensland Building and construction industry, this will help us to create more sustainable future” The QOF is a voluntary non-profit organisation, sponsored by Queensland industry including CSQ and BUSY at Work, supported by the State Government. This foundation provides an opportunity for an international experience with only a very few selected.

The non profit foundation also offers a bursary that provides trainers, employers, employees and administrators with the Vocation Education and Training sector.

Funding is provided to attend recognised international courses, workshops, work placement, events or activities with professional developmental benefits.

Lottoland ban puts all Queenslanders ahead Queensland’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Yvette D’Ath, has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to finally introduce legislation banning Lottoland and similar lottery websites.

Since last year Mrs D’Ath has called on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to put an end to ‘synthetic’ lotto services such as Lottoland which send revenues overseas and contribute zero to the local economy.

“For too long now, these synthetic lotto services have been delivering empty returns for Queenslanders.

“That’s why the Palaszczuk Government has been lobbying for the Federal Government to take action against websites like Lottoland, because these sites have been reaching into the pockets of local communities and impacting reliedupon revenue streams.

“Lottoland customers may not even have been aware that they are betting on the outcome of a lottery, not buying a lottery ticket,” Mrs D’Ath said.

The hint lies in the map – many beautiful ports of call like Santorini world famous for the cobalt blue roof tops and the blinding white buildings framed by carmine and fuscia coloured bougainvillea. It is said that there is no sunset quite like that over the Aegean Sea.

Asian markets drive growth in tourism industry

For the first time ever, more than 500,000 Chinese people in a year have visited Queensland as the state’s tourism industry achieved record high growth in visitation and expenditure driven by several key Asian markets.

The latest International Visitor Survey (IVS) results released today by Tourism Research Australia reveal 2.7 million overnight visitors to Queensland injected $5.3 billion into the state’s economy in the year ending December 2017, while total visitor nights grew 2.4 per cent to 53.1 million.

Both international holiday travel and overnight holiday visitor expenditure reached record highs – up 4.4 per cent to 1.9 million visitors and up 2.2 per cent to $2.8 billion respectively.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said the results were great news for Queensland’s $25 billion tourism industry.

“The latest IVS data shows our industry is going from strength to strength. This has a lot to do with strong growth from our eastern markets like China, Japan, India and Hong Kong,” she said.

“We’ve done a lot of work to attract more direct flights to Queensland and access

China remains Queensland’s largest and most valuable international market with overnight visitor expenditure increasing by 11.7 per cent to $1.14 billion and visitation increasing 3.8 per cent to 503,000, capping off a successful ChinaAustralia year of tourism and aviation capacity growth from the market.

Japan grew to become the state’s third largest international market, generating $432.1 million in expenditure – up 8.4 per cent, while Japanese visitor numbers increased 3.5 per cent to 205,000.

India moved to tenth place in terms of overall visitor expenditure, delivering a 46.4 per cent increase to $143.3 million thanks primarily to strong spending by education visitors.

Similarly, Hong Kong saw an 18.3 per cent increase in total visitor expenditure to $185.5 million, driven by growth in holiday and education spending.

Banksia Beach Medical is a locally family run and owned business who have been providing the highest standard of care to patients on the island for over 20 years. Dr Pat Tomasiello is well known in the area and has recently seen a 4th generation patient. This is a testament to the great care that he provides his patients. Many of the staff at Banksia Beach Medical have been working with Dr Tomasiello for over 10 years and after taking time off to have children they return to work with him. Juri Linins will revisit the Space Race Juri Linins is a recent arrival on Bribie who now conducts a range of Classes at Bribie U3A. He shares his knowledge of “100 years of Powered Flight” and “Global History “and “Contemporary Australia” reflecting his broad knowledge in a wide range of topics.

Juri said “My aim is to rekindle an awareness of a piece of history that I was fortunate to see firsthand. Hence I have turned my modelling hobby from planes to build the various space craft that were flown.”

He has built many models of aircraft, spacecraft and motor vehicles over his lifetime.

Some of his model planes are in the national War Museum and his model cars are in the Australian Motor Museum.

A public presentation covering all aspects of the Space Race will be given on Bribie on Friday 18th May. Getting the first man on the Moon was a remarkable scientific and technical achievement and was a big prize in the “Space Race”.

Juri Linins was raised on a Dairy farm in Victoria where his father bought him a model plane when he was eight years old and he became a lifetime aero modeller.

Interest in space flight was also sparked as a child watching Sputnik fly overhead and then the manned space missions, and he soon became recognised as a ‘space nerd’ “Recently I have become aware that the younger people do not seem to be aware of the significance of the space race era.”

He said.

It was Jim Lovell, Commander Apollo 13 who said “We now live in an era when

The presentation on Friday 18 May at U3A Centre is open to all, but you must register attendance on the notice board at U3A or phone 3408 1450 to book.

On Friday 18th May at 1pm he will give an “Insight” presentation in the Recreation Hall at Bribie U3A on the subject of “Revisiting the Space Race”.

His talk will be illustrated with images covering the many years of technical challenge to effectively get into Space.

It will be held in Recreation Hall commencing at 1pm and there will be a $2 charge for afternoon tea which follows.

Longman mp says “we won’t wait” for new settlement road upgrades Longman commuters are being treated with contempt after Coalition MPs Peter Dutton and Luke Howarth announced funding to resolve congestion issues in their respective electorates of Dickson and Petrie, the Federal Member for Longman said yesterday. The announcement was made in conjunction with long-standing promises to relieve congestion on the Bruce Highway between Pine Rivers and Caloundra.

However, Ms Lamb said that the community in Petrie and Dickson should err on the side of caution when it comes to the Federal Government’s latest announcements.

“Peter Dutton announced this funding for the Murrumba Downs works back in 2010 – it’s nothing new,” “It looks they’ve only just realised that they can actually afford to go ahead with the upgrades after having money left over from other completed projects,” “I think it’s quite deceitful the way they’ve re-badged the funding to give the impression that this is a new announcement. If Peter Dutton had been true to his word, the upgrades would have happened way back in 2010.” Ms Lamb said.

The national welfare fund exposed In January last year, Brian Hale, a former business editor of The Courier Mail and The Australian, exposed what amounts to the biggest rort ever imposed on Australia’s pensioners, imposed in the 1940s by the Chifley Government. At the time, the Government was struggling with a huge revenue-expenditure gap, the closure of which prompted the party’s decision to introduce additional taxation measures. To minimise opposition, the Treasurer, Ben Chifley, announced the establishment of a National Welfare Fund designed to cover welfare expenses such as pensions, unemployment relief, child endowments and health care, all funded by the 7.5% tax increase.

Opposition Leader Sir Robert Menzies insisted that the “Compulsory Contribution Levy” as the tax was called, should be kept completely separate; that it should be paid straight into a trust account and not mixed with the general revenue. The levy and the National Welfare Fund began on January 1, 1946, with contributions shown separately on workers’ personal tax assessments from 1946 to 1950 and the money paid straight into the fund.

In 1950, the balance in the fund was almost A£100 million or A$200 million – in today’s money the equivalent of several trillion dollars.

In 1977, Prime Minister Malcolm

Fraser transferred the balance left in the welfare fund account (by then almost A$500 million, or several trillion in today’s terms) to consolidated revenue but continued to deduct the 7.5 per cent levy from pay packets.

Later, in 1985, the Labor Government repealed the 1945 National Welfare Fund Acts 39, 40, and 45) and introduced income and asset testing to determine pension eligibility, thus excluding millions of levy and taxpaying Australians from receiving the pension for which they had paid. The 7.5 per cent levy hidden in general income tax revenue continued to be collected and to this day it is still being collected.

There have been estimates that, had the trillions of National Welfare Fund dollars not been transferred to consolidated revenue and the funds invested as per the Future Fund, there would now be enough money to pay every eligible pensioner a non-meanstested pension in excess of A$500 – A$1000 per week.

The Coalition, supported by Labor and the Greens, has reversed Robert Menzies’ view that the age pension is “an entitlement earned by the person’s personal contribution to the fund” and instead considers it charity. For example, Senate crossbencher David Leyonhjelm who, echoing former Treasurer Joe Hockey’s words, told the ABC in a recent interview that he wants Australians to drop their sense of entitlement to the aged pension, which should only be paid to poor people, and receiving it should be “nothing to be proud of”.

It’s not welfare and, when the National Welfare Fund was introduced, it was an entitlement. It still should be.

Gold and Sunshine Coasts rule real estate roost The beachfront markets of the Gold and Sunshine Coast, and Noosa, have finished 2017 with the strongest growth in the state, significantly outperforming Brisbane.

The Gold Coast delivered a gold medal performance, with the annual median house price growing by 7.7 per cent, to end the year on $615,000.

It has much to answer for. What appeared to be a 1990s fad quickly written off by the broadcasting establishment has stayed put. Rather than the genre fading as quickly as the “celebs” it creates each year, reality TV has gone from strength to strength.

Ordinary folk doing ordinary (and extraordinary) things seems to sell well.

Of course, the key to a successful renovation is more about the numbers than who can win the weekly challenge.

Personality may land you endorsements but it won’t assess the risk of overcapitalisation. While all the above may seem cynical, renovating a property can be a sound path to success as long as you approach it with a level head, a keen eye for numbers and a sharp pencil.

The strategy has also gained popularity for other reasons. If you desire an awesome pad in a great location but lack the ready dough to buy your dream palace upon the hill, a renovation project could help get your foot on the ladder. A well- positioned fixer-upper is a terrific opportunity to become one of the haves – when you’re forearmed with the right information, that is. Purchasers have the idea of buying a property, undertaking a quick renovation that will give good capital growth and the ability to re-enter the property market in a higher bracket and start the process again.

Renovation budgets vary what is happening within the Sunshine Coast region. It can be anything from a kitchen or bathroom makeover to the full Monty inside and out, depending on the budget of the individual and the state of repair of the dwelling. In some of the older suburbs, original dwellings are being demolished with a full new construction being undertaken. As you move to the more outer lying areas, the focus is on the kitchen and bathrooms and often, new flooring. The biggest factor in the equation is buying well and sticking to a budget.

High-rise unit development is predominantly within established localities, with owner occupiers opting to renovate rather than relocate. Specifically, there hasn’t been an influx of purchasers in the last three months specifically buying units to renovate. These buyers are typically purchasing for investment and then re-entry straight into the rental market for an ongoing income stream.

Townhouses and villas are seeing some buyers who are renovating, however these are typically on an as needs basis and the property is then rented or owneroccupied. A few of these areas are seeing renovating for profit, but again this is typically owners buying to renovate and occupy.

The Sunshine Coast median house price grew 6.4 per cent to end the year at $569,000 and Noosa grew 6.2 per cent to deliver an annual median house price of $650,000, finishing the year just $15,000 below Brisbane LGA median house price.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said Noosa was an area where demand was placing strong pressure on limited supply levels.

“This is an area that could do with more supply, but clearly the topography makes that challenging.

“Noosa’s world-class beaches, stunning natural bushland settings and wonderful warm community are factors that are fanning the flames of buyer demand. It is inevitable that this will push up prices,” she said.

The Gold Coast market has benefited from a strong local economy, a direct result of the infrastructure spend ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

Upward pressure on prices has seen some suburbs demonstrate explosive median house and median unit price growth.

Mermaid Beach is the Gold Coast’s most expensive suburb for houses, with growth of 8.9 per cent delivering a median house price of $1.56 million.

The Main Beach unit market grew a whopping 14.3 per cent and is the most expensive suburb to buy a unit, with a median unit price of $720,000.

The Gold Coast is facing the tightest rental market in years, with vacancies at just 1.1 per cent. With significant supply still forecast to come onto the market in the next 18 months conditions in the rental market are expected to ease in the post-Games period.

Comparing the three superstar markets of the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Noosa, with Brisbane LGA, we can see demand is stronger for beachside living.

The Brisbane market grew a modest 2.6 per cent, to end 2017 with a median house price of $665,000.

While growth levels elsewhere are enviable, Brisbane is the only market to have a $2 million suburb, as Teneriffe stormed into the prestigious club of one. This tightly held suburb of around 400 houses ended 2017 with a median house price of $2.4 million and if current growth levels continue, it’s likely this area could reach an annual median of $3 million next year.

Brisbane’s second-most expensive suburb is New Farm, with an annual median house price of $1.5 million. In a surprising twist, this market fell 4.4 per cent over the year, ending the year lower than it started.

The apartment markets in most parts of the state delivered a fairly subdued result over 2017, with the notable exception of the Gold Coast, which grew a hefty 3.7

per cent. This market continues to enjoy strong demand across both houses and units.

Rounding out the southeast corner, the Toowoomba property market’s dream run is slowing to a stroll. This region had a solid 2015 and began its slowdown in 2016, which has continued through 2017. The median house price grew a modest 1.4 per cent to $355,000 in 2017 while the unit market slipped 1.3 per cent to end the year on $305,000.

The Fraser Coast market has turned a corner and delivered 2.6 per cent growth to median house prices over the past 12 months, ending the year on $316,000.

This market has also grown almost 11 per cent since 2012, showing steady, reliable growth.

The median unit price continues to struggle and fell 2.4 per cent over the 12 months to December, finishing at $255,000.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said there was clearly more confidence in the market as buyers returned to the a market that offered a beautiful coastal lifestyle.

“This is an area where buyers can be confident they will achieve capital growth over time and the market fundamentals are steady,” she said.

Bundaberg has delivered a year of modest growth, adding 2.2 per cent to its median house price and finishing the year on $285,000.

Gladstone’s housing market continued to slip, contracting 13.9 per cent to a median house price $280,000. This annual median house price brings Gladstone into line with similar regional towns, such as Bundaberg, and it is the hope that this might lead to a stabilisation of demand and the median price.

The Rockhampton market is starting to see a more stable level of demand, with the median house price contracting just 1.9 per cent in 2017, to end on $265,000. The market is 11.1 per cent below where it was five years ago, which is relatively modest when compared with markets such as Mackay, which is down 23.7 per cent on five years ago.

Buying a unit in Rockhampton remains a more expensive exercise than buying a house, with the median unit price ending the year 1.3 per cent below where it started, on $295,000. This is $30,000 more expensive than buying a house.

Mackay has finally started to demonstrate growing demand, with the market holding steady over the 12 months to December 2017. Anecdotal evidence has come from local agents all through the year suggesting the market was improving, but until now the data has not supported their assertions.

The Mackay annual median house price is $325,000, based on more than 1000 transactions throughout the year. The unit price continues to struggle and fell almost 13 per cent in 2017, to finish on $205,000.

The Townsville market slipped 2.5 per cent, to finish the year on an annual median house price of $328,000.

Townsville has recently had a droughtbreaking drenching and the optimism in this northern city is palpable.

Ms Mercorella said it was possible the rain would have a positive impact on the property market.

“The optimism is very evident, the city has greened up and everyone is optimistic about the future,” she said.

33 “This could easily translate to increased buyer confidence,” she said.

The Cairns house market was one of the standout regional performers with the median house price growing 3.8 per cent to end the year on $410,000. The unit market fell 2.7 per cent.

Ms Mercorella said with a strong tourism sector, jobs growth had helped the property market perform well.

Qld population to hit 5 million, driving housing demand Queensland’s population is projected to reach 5 million in a couple of months, according to the ABS today, and this is translating to a strong property market in the Sunshine State.

REIQ Chairman Rob Honeycombe said Queensland real estate market, and the wider Queensland economy, would benefit from such strong growth.

“Queensland grew by 81,000 people last year, and we were the most popular state for internal migration, growing more than any other state in the year to September 2017.

Overseas migration added 31,000 to Queensland’s population, which was almost 40 per cent of all new residents in the year to September 2017.

“Last year, $54 billion of Queensland residential real estate was bought and sold,” Mr Honeycombe said.

“Our popularity means demand for housing is growing and this is good news for some of our weaker markets such as the inner Brisbane apartment market and regional Queensland,” Mr Honeycombe said.

“Of course, there are pockets where housing supply is tight and this population growth is placing pressure on markets such as the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, where prices are rising steady and vacancy rates are at historic lows.

“These areas would benefit from increased supply and, in fact, both the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast have additional levels of supply coming to market in the near future.

The ABS data revealed 12,000 of our 19,000 net internal migrants were from New South Wales.

“We have known for some time that many southerners are also moving to regional Queensland, seeking a peaceful lifestyle change.

“Downsizers and pre-retirees are selling their Sydney property to move to regional coastal towns, such as Bundaberg and the Fraser Coast, to buy waterfront property and a great lifestyle,” Mr Honeycombe said.

“Queensland real estate offers great value and this is why it underpins the state’s economy. When real estate performs well, everyone benefits,” Mr Honeycombe said.

Turnbull must make good on his promise to Beachmere Residents Labor is calling on the Turnbull Government to put community concern to rest and deliver on its promise to fix the Beachmere mobile black spot without further delays.

Labor’s Stephen Jones and Susan Lamb visited Beachmere Sands and spoke with local residents who have long suffered from poor mobile phone reception posing risks to safety and significantly impacting their quality of life.

Residents spoke about their inability to keep up to date with friends and family and concern at being able to contact health and emergency services during times of emergency. In some circumstances, residents were even required to leave their houses and go into their backyards to make and take phone calls.

Labor’s Stephen Jones said the Government had taken too long to progress this issue after waiting more than 18 months

to get started on negotiations for the next round of the Mobile Black Spot Program.

“It’s time the Government get its act together and follow through on its promises. For too long, the Liberal National Party has been marred by chaos; distracted and divided by its internal conflict,” Mr Jones said.

Federal Member for Longman, Susan Lamb MP, said the former Member had promised local residents a new mobile base station - but there are now serious concerns that this would not be delivered.

“At the last election, the LNP told local residents they would fix the issue. As time goes by, I’m hearing that people are seriously concerned that the project will not proceed,” Ms Lamb said “I’m calling on the Turnbull Government to follow through with its commitment and ensure local residents get what they were promised.”

Stephen Jones said he has written to Senator McKenzie seeking her assurance that the Government would fund the Beachmere black spot under the Mobile Black Spot Program.

Mr Jones said the fact that Beachmere Sands residents had not received any updates or communications from the Government since 2016 was simply not good enough.

It’s time Turnbull and the LNP make good on their promise to Beachmere residents and do so, without further delays. Beachmere residents have been left waiting for too long already.

Threat and penalty scams from the little black book of scams (if a government authority or trusted company is telling you to pay up, stop, think and double check) How the Scam works Instead of offering a prize, money or rebate, these scams use threats designed to frighten you into handing over your money. The scammer may call you and threaten you with arrest or send you an email claiming you owe money for a speeding fine, a tax office debt or an unpaid bill.

During the phone call scammers will pressure you into paying immediately and tell you the police will be sent to your house if you refuse. Scammers have been known to target vulnerable people in our community, such as newly arrive migrants. They pretend to be immigration department officials and threaten victims with deportation unless fees are paid to correct errors in their visas. A very similar scam involves the scammer pretending to be from Australian Tax Office telling their victims they have an outstanding tax bill.

Scammers also pretend to be trusted companies such as your bank, gas, electricity, water or phone provider.

They will threaten to cancel your service or charge you excessive penalty fees if you don’t pay the bill immediately.

Sometimes they may impersonate a business, like Australia Post stating you have an item to pick up or you will be charged a holding fee every day you don’t pay. Whatever the case they try to make you worried by and act without stopping to think and check that the story is true.

Protect yourself • Don’t be pressured by threatening caller. Stop, think and check whether their story is true.

• A government agency or trusted company will never ask you to pay by unusual methods such as by gift card, wire transfers or Bitcoins.

• Verify the identity of the contact by calling the relevant organisation directly – find them through an independent source such as a pone book, past bill or online search.

• Do not use the contact details provided by emails or given to you during phone calls. Again, find them through and independent source.

How the Scam works Investment scams come in many forms including business ventures, superannuation schemes, managed funds and the sales of purchase of shares or property. Scammers dress up ‘opportunities ‘ with professional looking brochures and websites to mask their fraudulent operations. They often begin with a phone call or email out of the blue from a scammer offering a ‘not-tobe-missed’, ‘high return’ or ‘guaranteed’

opportunity. The scammer usually operates from overseas, and will not have an Australian Financial Services Licence.

Computer prediction software scams promise to accurately predict stock market movements, the results of horse races, sports events or lotteries. They are simply a form of gambling disguised as investments. Most of the schemes or programs do not work and buyers cannot get their money back. In many cases the supplier simply disappears.

Superannuation scams offer to give you early access to your super fund, often through a self-managed super fund or for a fee. The scammer may ask you to agree to a story to allow the early release of your money and then, acting as your financial adviser, they will deceive your superannuation company into paying out your super benefits directly to them. Once they have your money, the scammer may take large ‘fees’ or leave you with nothing at all.

Protect yourself • Don’t let anyone pressure you into making decisions about your money or investments – especially if the offer has come of the blue.

• Before parting with your money, do your own research on the investment company and check out www.moneysmary.gov.au to see if they have an Australian Financial Services Licence. Ask yourself; if a stranger knew a secret to making money, why would they share it??

MICK’S PATCH ‘Inspired by Nature” Welcome to our latest gardening articles written by a passionate local horticulturist for our equally passionate local gardening community living on Bribie Island and Surrounds. Last month I elaborated on some beneficial bugs in the home garden and in particular, the humble lady bird ‘Cryptolaemus montrouzieri’ - which is mostly black in colour and can whittle your mealy bug infestation away in a few weeks, also I mentioned how the red and black lady bird ‘Coelophora inaequalis’- can restore the balance of the natural order in nature by feasting and devouring aphid infestations in your citrus trees. It really is interesting to watch these natural predators at work when walking around in your garden and especially important to show our children the importance of keeping mother nature’s balance by explaining to them if you can, the importance of sustainable gardening and how finely tuned mother nature really is. When spraying our fruit trees with eco- friendly, botanical based oils for pest control, these could still possibly harm the larvae of the humble lady bird who in time will whittle away the pest problem if left unaided. The real challenge is to be alert and observe what’s actually happening in your patch and the trick is not overreact at the first sign of any problem pests in your garden, by understanding that mostly, we want to harvest the fruits of our labour. If your citrus tree has 100 fruits that have formed in preparation for winter ripening, but some of the new foliage may be attacked by aphids, then it’s the fruit we are really wanting is it not? I would hose the pests away by aiming a steady stream of water to dislodge the infestation. Then treat to a blanket spray of diluted seaweed to cover the canopy of foliage to build up the brix levels in the leaves to create a more robust stronger tree which will be more resistant to pest attack in the future. It is only fitting then, that I mention an abstract from my Soils ain’t soilssegment, published in the second issue of the - Island and Surrounds- August 2016, to follow on with this article.

Soils aint Soils - (Part-1) “The Sprout of Life” “Interestingly, like the animal kingdom, when we humans consume food it is broken down and assimilated into our system via the gut, therefore the healthier nutritious foods we eat, the better chance of absorbing the necessary vitamins and minerals for us to function optimally, this is also regulated by acidity and our internal chemistry just like the soil food web. Soil micro-organisms are readily available because atmospheric conditions are ideal in compost, because it has been broken down and assimilated with bacteria and various strands of fungi, which thrive with just the right amount of moisture and oxygen to allow soil life to replicate and flourish.

When we add this “magic breath of life” compost, to our own impoverished soils like our sandy soils on Bribie Island, the humble earth worms further decompose the organic matter to create humus, the worms also oxygenate the soil and incubate new soil life while providing nutrient dense castings which can be utilised by the plant roots as the natural plant available minerals are then translocated from the soil.

This is the first step in re-creating a sustainable landscape, by utilising a holistic approach to nourishing your soil and in turn creating balance and harmony in your garden, but it does not stop there.

We need to continue a program of organic principles with the intention of attracting as many earth worms to your patch as possible. On the other side of the fence, the more chemical fertilisers and fungicides added to our soils can contribute to reduced earth worm activity and hence reduced fertility”. It pretty much hits the nail on the head for Sustainable gardening practices indeed!

LANDSCAPE PLANT OF THE MONTH Pachypodium lamerei or Madagascar Palm

Sensational, architectural and tropical looking they are. My eyes always pop when I gaze upon one of these beauties. Pachypodium lamerei are drought tolerant, hardy and robust in stature, growing well in sandy soils but can tolerate most soils as long its well drained. Originating from Madagascar. Pachypodium lamerei are a must have tropical looking plant for that architectural design element in the garden. The down side is the spines unfortunately, as they totally cover the trunk. The spines are mostly in an arrangement of three and are borne with a leaf blade that drops in time leaving the scar and spines below. The long narrow (lanceolate) leaves are shiny-glossy green in colour and arranged spirally on the stem and have a very pronounced mid rib. The Madagascar palm is semi-decidious. The trunk itself holds water due to its indigenous habitat in Africa where rocky soils and drought conditions are the norm and the trunks vary in shape wildly, can be bottled shaped or stretch to reach the sunlight, usually growing to 4 to 5 metres tall.

They look great in pots and with outdoor lighting. The flowers have white twisted petals with a yellow throat and are very fragrant and are formed in the Summer months. Can be propagated easily from seed which is produced in a capsule shaped like a cucumber.

April Squalls!

Well its been squalling for nearly a month on and off and gardening in the Great South East has been a quite a challenge commercially, never- mind personally, when working outside in the garden. With all the weeds and pests around, it is hard to put a control strategy in place when you go to the shed to make up an organic solution for your veggie patch, only to come back 5 minutes later to fleeting sheets of wind and rain to thwart your plans and to try and dampen your spirits. Well I did say ‘try’, the show must go on and in between squalls of rain, there is ample opportunity to hand pick the weeds before they flower or set seed or mow the grass before its saturated again, also great time for organic fertiliser application, especially composted manures , fish and blood and bone as these are not immediately leachable and will become part of the soil profile which not only feeds the plants, but assists to retain moisture around the root zone especially in sandy soils. As mentioned last article, keep an eye out on your mulch and pull it away from your plants as it will certainly start rotting and fungal disease could penetrate through the cambium layer on your tree trunk.

Grass hoppers have been rampant throughout summer and with the Autumn rains they are feasting accordingly, they are notoriously hard to control and can decimate entire plants. While there are synthetic pesticides for control of some problem pests, I always check their (SDS) ‘Safety Data Sheet’ listed on the label or go to the manufacturers website with my smart phone, then that pretty much makes up my mind up whether I will use it or not, if its toxic to fish, bees or is a known carcinogen it stays on the shelf for me. I try to use neem oil (Cold pressed) and make up a spray and saturate the plants and grasshoppers and I repeat the process until they find greener pastures elsewhere, they definitely do not like neem oil and seem to jump off pretty quick, but it is my preference of control. Pyrethrum works also and by applying applications of seaweed allows plants to strengthen up and recover pretty quickly. Interestingly to note that some commercial gardening stores are banning the sale of confidor products finally, as this chemical has been said to contribute to the decline of our bee populations in the environment, the active ingredient (Imidacloprid) is also used in some tick collars for our pets also.

There is a product called ‘Dipel’ its actually made from a natural bacterium (Bacillus thuringiensis) and is registered as organic and is used for the control of caterpillars, this works really well, but is not much good when rainfall is expected as it washes away. I have managed to use Dipel on the latest infestation of Crinum grub which hatches from the eggs deposited at the throat of the bulb (I did this before they burrow into the bulb or mine their way inside the long strappy leaves) as they feast away, protected from the elements and predators alike, ultimately causing the death of the plant if not detected, in this case, the control is careful monitoring and pruning back infested plant parts for disposal between treatments. Greyhounds Make Great Pets

permanent homes for them as pets and family companions.

Since 2003, the group has homed hundreds of beautiful Greyhounds throughout the eastern states of Australia.

Friends of the Hound is focused on promoting this breed, educating the public and raising awareness about the plight of Greyhounds.

The group saves up to 250 Greyhounds every year. The adoption program relies on volunteer foster carers and there are around 50-60 Greyhounds in care at any given time. Sadly, there is a waiting list of up to 90 Greyhounds to be surrendered by their racing owners and trainers as the industry continues to routinely breed, cage, race, injure, dope, and discard these ‘products’ of gambling.

Friends of the Hound relies solely on the support and assistance of compassionate community members, and the kindness of those who give so that Greyhounds can live.

Just under four years ago I knew nothing about greyhounds as a breed suitable for a pet. It was before the media exposé about the greyhound industry so I thought they were only bred for racing.

for many months. When he realized that his cage was being opened, he jumped up with so much excitement. I cried when I saw Sammie’s face light up. Ruby came too and we all went home together.

I was so wrong! Around that time, I saw a Facebook post for an 18 month old greyhound to give away. She was too slow for the track and therefore was to be euthanised if a good home couldn’t be found. As soon as I saw the post, I decided to go get her and bring her home.

Since then, we have adopted a third greyhound, Jessie who has come into our family. She had been rescued by Friends of the Hound Greyhound Rescue and came to us after 10 months in foster care.

We were supposed to be temporary foster carers for Jessie, but “foster failed” and within 4 days we knew she was part of the family.

The first few weeks were interesting!

I found out later, that normally a greyhound that is rescued would go into foster care to learn how to be a dog. A racing greyhound that has come straight from the track has normally lived in kennels and has no experience just “being a dog”.

On that first day, I walked with Ruby (her new name) to the stairs of the house for the first time and she stood at the bottom, frozen…she had never used stairs before! My son carried her up the stairs and when we got to the top, she stood at the top of the stairs, frozen again, not knowing what to do! Within half an hour, I called a greyhound rescue group and asked for advice. I discovered this was completely normal behavior for a greyhound that, less than 48 hours before, was racing around a track.

Our 3 greyhounds have taught us so much. They are beautiful companions, very gentle loving dogs that love to be close to humans. They can be found lazing on the couch most days and require a short walk each day.

Greyhounds rarely bark. They actually don’t need a lot of space as they have been used to kennel conditions. Some people say our greyhounds were lucky to find us, but we say we were lucky to find them too!

I showed my husband Sammie’s photo on Facebook and he said, “Let’s go get Sammie!” He was in a row of cages and first in the block. He didn’t move as we approached, being used to people coming and going and walking past him

• Greyhounds are gentle, affectionate, low- maintenance dogs that thrive on human companionship, love and comfort.

Greyhounds have a calm, tolerant nature, are well-suited to indoor living and suburban homes, making them an ideal choice as a family pet.

Racing Greyhounds have previously lived in kennels or cages so often townhouses, duplexes or units with small yards, are suitable homes.

• Greyhounds are generally very good with children and the elderly.

• They are quite friendly and sociable and usually mix readily with other dogs.

It only took Ruby a few days to start settling into family life. She decided that the couch was her favourite place to sleep for hours on end! She was my constant companion, happy to laze as I worked, following me around the house when I changed location.

A few months later, I saw a Facebook another post about Sammie. Sammie was also a greyhound and had been part of an adoption program and went to a family 6 years previously. His previous family was moving overseas and decided they couldn’t have him anymore. For Sammie, that meant either euthanasia or return to the adoption program. He was returned to the adoption program, but being an older greyhound, no one wanted him. He spent his 10th birthday in the kennels and had been there for many months, spending 23-24 hours a day in a caged kennel block.

Members and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure our greyhound adoption efforts are a success, by finding companion homes for many Greyhounds that would otherwise be destroyed because they won’t chase, are just too slow, injured, or no longer suited to racing.

Some Greyhounds will get along with cats and other small pets. However, many ex-racing greyhounds have too strong an instinct for chasing or “prey drive” to live successfully with small furry animals.

•

Greyhounds do not require a lot of space, and they do not require excessive exercise. They are a low- energy dog, renowned for only short bursts of energy or “zoomies”. Regular, short walks will keep them healthy and happy.

• Greyhounds are actually lazy ‘creatures of comfort’ that enjoy relaxing on a soft, comfy bed or lounge.

• They rarely bark – usually only when excited or if something is wrong. (the following info is direct from Friends of the Hound)

• Most Greyhounds have minimal shedding of hair, compared to other breeds.

Not all humans are spared though, and fate brought together two people in France recently, a woman being held hostage in a supermarket by an Islamic terrorist, who had already killed for his evil cause and a French Police Officer – Lieutenant Colonel Arnaud Beltrame.

Knowing explicitly that this Islamic murderer was about to kill his hostage by slashing her throat, this Police Officer convinced him to swap the woman for himself.

But !!

Love affairs begin with a casual, smoky glance across a room, chemistry flashes and voila ! Lips touch and another chapter of life begins to unfold. Who knew who was going to be in the dimly lit room ? Why did the casual glance attract the eye of another ?

Luckily, but mainly the result of the superbly professional security agencies we have in this country, and the Government policies which give them the resources they need, we have escaped the horror of Islamic terrorist violence.

And that is what happened. A random act of superb courage by the Police Officer and a random opportunity for life for the woman.

He gave his life, so that she could live.

We have heard those words before, particularly on ANZAC DAY.

Indian Butter Chicken (Makhani) Indian butter chicken, also known as chicken makhani, is a full of flavour which you can make as mild or spicy as you like. Serve with basmati rice.

Next month we have a Norwegian Recipe

oil in a large saucepan over medium high heat. Fry the shallots and onion until soft and transparent.

Stir in butter, lemon juice, garlic, ginger, half the garam masala, the chilli powder, cumin and bay leaf.

Cook, stirring, for 1 minute.

Add tomato puree, and cook for 2 minutes, stirring frequently.

Stir in the cream and yogurt. Reduce heat to low, and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and set aside.

Heat the rest of the oil in a large heavy frypan over medium heat. Cook chicken until lightly browned, turning once, about 10 minutes. Reduce heat and season with the rest of the garam masala and cayenne. Stir in a few spoonfuls of sauce, and simmer until liquid has reduced, and chicken is no longer pink. Spoon the cooked chicken into the sauce.

Mix together the cornflour and water, then stir into the sauce. Adjust seasonings and cook for 5 to 10 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.

Stronger fisheries laws aim to combat seafood black market

Reforms to modernise Queensland’s fisheries laws, including stronger compliance powers and penalties for serious offences such as seafood black marketing, have been proposed by the Palaszczuk Government.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development Mark Furner today released a discussion paper on amendments to the Fisheries Act 1994 for public feedback.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to protecting Queensland’s valuable fisheries resources and delivering a world-class management system through the Sustainable Fisheries Strategy,” Minister Furner said.

“An integral part of reform is to update fisheries legislation to meet community expectations for recreational and commercial fishing laws which are contemporary, practical and simple to understand.”

Minister Furner said the proposed changes aim to: •Modernise the objective of the Fisheries Act and recognise the interests of key stakeholder groups.

•Clarify the roles of the Minister responsibble for fisheries and the chief executive in managing Queensland’s fisheries; and to allow for more responsive decision-making through the use of harvest strategies.

•Strengthen the enforcement powers of fisheries inspectors and penalties to

GT CAUGHT IN PASSAGE 18th March 2018

Fishing off White Patch recently with my Dad I caught a GT! We had parked up on a sandbank, while dad was cleaning out his fish. I decided to flick with a soft plastic in a little channel off the bank. On my 3rd cast, I must have landed straight on top of the GT, it struck and started peeling line just after it hit the water. After a 10 minute fight with it I pulled it up onto the beach.

Our last fishing competition was a fresh water competition at Summerset Dam, the weather was close to perfect. There was also a Bass tournament on at the same time and it was worth being there just ogle the Bass boats on the water.

Again, we had a massive turnout of 13 members and 5 potential members, however not to many fish were caught and it was not from the lack of trying.

The competition winner was Ted Goodwin with a very a very large yellow belly. We managed to scrap together a good feed of Red Claw with Jim Mischke using his magical cooking skills.

The competition winner was myself with 1 very large yellowbelly, we managed to scrape together a good feed of redclaw again with Jimmy Mischke weaving his magical cooking skills again to tantalise our taste buds.

I was honoured to be asked to draw the major prize for the year for the AFAQ Bribie Island, Ted Bylett was the lucky winner of a fully installed split system air conditioner drawn on Saturday the 7th of April. Jim Attard from Kippa Ring also a member of AFAQ Bribie Island kindly donated the air conditioner. About $2,500 was raised for the Bribie Island AFAQ club. This is much needed funds for the club. Blockbuster sporting events lure NZ visitors to Brisbane

Brisbane’s strong suite of summer sporting events has provided a hook for New Zealand holiday visitors, contributing to a record influx of international visitors to the city.

The latest International Visitor Survey from Tourism Australia reveals Brisbane attracted 1.3 million international visitors over calendar year 2017, up 6.7 per cent from the year before.

The girls above are all the Bulldogs players so far and the club is needing another nine members to field a go it alone side for the upcoming season or they will have to merge with another team in the local area that are in the same position.

After watching the team play last season for the first time I was amazed at their skill level and they moved the ball around

the ground fast and direct and with plenty of spirit. But unfortunately, a lot of the players have moved on to other things. It is a good spectacle to watch the girls strut their skills.

So, the call goes out to any girls that want to give it a crack and make good friends along the way. Parents and prospective players can contact the club or the coach.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said Brisbane’s early-summer line-up of blockbuster sporting events had helped spark a sharp rise in New Zealand holidaymakers heading to the city, up 29.7 per cent to 60,000 over the year.

“Drawcard events including the third Bledisloe Cup rugby Test, the Ashes cricket, the Rugby League World Cup finals and the Battle of Brisbane 2 boxing event gave our cousins from across the ditch more reasons to visit our city,” Cr Quirk said.

“Major events are important to Brisbane – they draw in visitors, fill our hotel rooms, boost our hospitality, service and retail sectors and profile our city on the world stage.”

The International Visitor Survey found total visitor expenditure in Brisbane grew 11.4 per cent to a record-breaking $2.245 billion, while the number of holidaymakers rose 7.6 per cent to an alltime high of 696,000.

The game was a good win for the team, 3-0. The first goal from a training ground rehearsal scored by Chelsea Falzon, the second came from a header from Hannah Bulley and the third also

from Hannah 20 seconds into the 2nd half. Some good moments with nice interchange of passing. The team is developing well. Player of the match for her energy and enthusiasm is Amy O’Shaughnessy. Although a special shout-out goes to Meg, Brie and Lily who all stood up well.

Match Report for Senior Men vs Noosa Lions The Bribie Tigers were mauled last Friday by Noosa Lions. The 6-2 score line showed how far the Tigers form has slipped The first half was even until the 30th minute when a defensive error allowed Noosa to take the lead.

Five minutes later after making a save Michael Pires was again beaten by the Lions centre forward and Noosa went 2-0 up.

Credit to the Tigers as they responded with a goal of their own when Josh Rankin scored just before half time.

The second half was error riddled by the Tigers. The Lions pounced 3 goals midway through the second half at which time the game was over for a disappointing Tigers team. Jordan Watt scored a late penalty to respond to a sixth Noosa goal but too little too late for Bribie who must regroup for this Friday’s home game against Kawana.

Cr Quirk said there was solid growth across many of Brisbane’s international tourism markets.

“Holiday visitors from Canada grew strongly by 28.1 per cent to 21,000; German holiday visitors rose by 15.6 per cent to 51,000 while Taiwanese holidaymakers jumped 47.1 per cent to 31,000,” he said.

“New direct flights from Beijing, Shenzhen, Vancouver, Tokyo and Christchurch launched over the past couple of years have helped contribute to a rise in international tourism, as have recent air capacity increases from Taipei.

“Discussions on developing air route networks will be on the table in our city next week when Brisbane hosts the Routes Asia conference, which will bring together the Asia Pacific’s leading airlines, airports and tourism authorities.”

Cr Quirk said Brisbane Marketing worked with Tourism Australia, Tourism and Events Queensland, Brisbane Airport Corporation and airline partners on securing new air routes and conducting marketing and trade activities in various markets.

Para-Athletes at the 2018 Commonwealth Games As Australia celebrates the Commonwealth Games on the Golf Coast, there have been many critics who share various views in relation to the value and investment in the Commonwealth Games and whether the investment maybe out of balance with needs of the greater community, particularly given the demand on society, the corporate dollar and athletes.

While there is merit in analysing the benefit of any major event, the Commonwealth Games brings so many athletes, supporters and volunteers together to compete and share in the common values of Equality, Destiny and Humanity. Since the first British Empire Games in 1930, Australia is one of only six countries to have sent athletes to every Commonwealth Games and the results speak for themselves. Australia has won 14 Commonwealth Games which is testament to our competitive spirit and focus on grass roots sports across our nation. The Commonwealth Games Federation admits that including parasports on the program for the first time in 2018 has involved “some risk” in relation to the balance of the Gold Coast Games.

The Gold Coast games is the first time that para-sports have been fully integrated into the Commonwealth Games, with medals won by para-athletes counting towards the overall medal table. Some of the para-athletes events have featured small fields, including the women’s blind and visually impaired track cycling which have just three competitors. The Golf Coast Commonwealth Games has set a record by hosting up to 300 para-athletes and 38 medal events across seven sports - an increase of 45 per cent more athletes and 73 per cent more medals compared to the para-sport competition staged at the last Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014. The aim of the paraathlete inclusion has further highlighted commitment to equality and inclusion.

Although only 9 out of the 53-member nations have hosted the Commonwealth Games, the expansion and integration of the games has strengthened the long-term future of this multi-sport celebration.

Cricket It would be difficult to avoid making comment on the recent ‘Ball Tampering’ saga that has provided a feeding frenzy for the world’s sporting media. It seems logical that if we increase the salaries of sportspeople and position the art of gambling in sport as part of our culture, we will continue to expose the opportunities for athletes and sharks to influence the outcomes of competitions.

Despite the tears and apologies expressed by the cricketers who chose to break the rules of sportsmanship, let’s take time to examine our own backyards. Our collective role in society is to establish agreed behaviours and consequences with our children in the home and on the paddock. The level to which we consistently enforce good behaviour as adults, mentors or coaches will directly impact on the decisions taken by a player, coach, supporter and board. Oh…to be a fly on the wall at Cricket Australia…… everything starts and stops at the top lads.

Bribie Island Bulldogs have won their first game of AFL football in a couple of seasons last Friday night against Jindalee scoring 8.9.57 to 3.4.22 in a classy well played team effort performance. Best players for Bribie were Tyler Gilmore, Joshua Bear, Darby Cody, Tate Gilmore and Cooper Jenkins.

It is a new constituted competition against old established clubs from in and around Brisbane. The league consists of nine teams, which are Bribie Island, Springwood, Yeronga South Brisbane, Ipswich Cats, Ferny Grove, Coorparoo.

Marcelin Old Boys, Jindalee and Aspley Hornets.

The team has a fair bit of travelling to do this year, but are up to the challenge according to coach Damian Clarke and after the game I watched on ‘Friday night, he could be right. There are a few old heads in the team, but the bulk of the players are young and have plenty of oomph in them.
