Dear Editor I have been driving for 40 years and am sure there are a lot of excellent drivers on Bribie.

However, there are some that are NOT, these are listed as follows 1. indicate right when going straight on at roundabouts, these motorists should check out the road rules.2. virtually stopping when round about clear. 3.

Driving well under speed limits, some people have jobs and deadlines to keep, consider others.

Also why has money wasted by installing, so many traffic lights on the Bribie road and creating congestion and Que’s, why not roundabouts to allow traffic to flow and reduce congestion.

While the Government’s decision will see a trial into real-time fuel pricing, there is still plenty of detail lacking including how motorists can access the real-time information and an actual start date.

The Labor Government now has to get cracking and stop causing drivers more pain at the pump. Pumicestone residents shouldn’t have to wait any longer than they already have to monitor the price of the fuel they wish to purchase.

In 2015 and 2017 I drove an Australian Aboriginal Elder and Aboriginal children in the Parade. In those Parades, the decorated car was well received by the community who cheered as we passed in recognition of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander efforts in the Australian military.

The car was decorated this year with the Australian National Flag, Aboriginal Flag, and the Torres Strait Islander Flag similar to previous years.

Another decorated vintage car with Aboriginal passengers was stopped from entering and was told if he took the Aboriginal Flags off the car he could enter.

He refused to take the flags off.

This RSL action without any consultation has devastated the Aboriginal community.

My small effort in Closing the Gap was sabotaged. The flags were supplied by Susan Lamb MP, our local Federal Politician.

I felt for the Aboriginal Elder and the Aboriginal children seated in the car when the police interviewed us. How can we ever Close the Gap when an organisation like the RSL treat the descendants of indigenous Australian service men and women who fought in wars to protect this country with such contempt.

In other ANZAC Day Ceremonies and Parades across this country, indigenous contributions to military service was honoured, but not here on Bribie Island by our local RSL. (At Elephant Rock, there was an Indigenous serviceman mounted on a horse, holding a large Aboriginal Flag as part of the Dawn Service. (See 24/4/2018 Brisbane Channel 7, 6 o’clock news.)

Over 20 years ago in 1997, Annette Lourigan attended her first Undertaker Job which involved attending the scene and taking into care the body of a 14-year-old boy who had ended his life.

To this day, Annette recalls vividly that heart-wrenching event when she visited a home, cutting the young boy down and packing up his mother’s baby boy into the body bag and zipping it closed.

This was just one of numerous similar tragic events that lives with Annette to this day. These days Annette Lourigan is the Seasoned Funeral Director and Location Manager for George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals on Bribie Island and is well versed in taking people on the journey of preparing their funeral and assisting families in celebrating the passing of a loved one.

I had the pleasure of meeting Annette at her Funeral Office to spend a few hours talking dying, death, faith, hope and love. Dressed in a sharp blue uniform, colourful cravat and name badge, I was greeted by Annette Lourigan and taken down to the staff kitchen to make a cuppa before joining Annette behind the reception desk for our interview.

The two notable features of a Funeral Office are the peace and calmness which was opposite to the music I had just played in my car before I arrived – You are wondering what I was playing? I was playing a track by David Gray, ‘It’s Not Easy to Be Me’ which is my latest ‘Ultimate Guitar’ track song. The second notable feature of a funeral office is that there are not 10 grieving families lined up preparing to bury their brother or sister, which is a good thing – they were probably all sitting across at the Coffee Club waiting until I had left the building – nothing worse than a nosey journo wearing an old polo top loitering behind a funeral reception desk. Annette’s day involves planning funeral events, conducting funerals, meeting families, screening calls, managing a business and investing time in community support events. Her warmness and willingness to connect with people and share her life journey and passion for a kinder and more generous society is palpable and at times emotional.

Annette with her Daughter Haley Annette Lourigan was born in Gundagai, New South Wales and moved to Scarborough, Queensland at 6 years of age with her twin brother, older brother and sister who was yet to be born.

Annette recalls, “We were so fascinated with the ocean because in Gundagai we only knew rivers and now we had a whole ocean to swim. My dad operated a pest control business - I recall thinking that there must have been a lot of pests in Scarborough.” After finishing school and prior to entering the Funeral Industry, Annette worked across the retail industry managing various businesses on

I don’t think that my husband was very good at marriage.

In saying that, I don’t think I was any good at marriage either. I raised my daughter as a single mum and learned much about life and love through my beautiful daughter who is now 29 and lives in Brisbane.

This was driven by the fact that Annette’s mum had a copy of the Catechism, a small green book that you receive during the time of preparing for and receiving the holy sacraments.

Annette said, “I remember mum having the Catechism and wondering why I wasn’t Catholic.

I am not religious, however I am very faith driven and believe in a God or higher power. This experience taught me a lot about myself and reinforced the importance of faith, hope and compassion,” Annette said. “I also completed an Advance Diploma in Chaplaincy to support my holistic understanding of our physical, social, emotional and spiritual health. “My role as the Location Manager at George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals is to support individuals and families to plan every aspect of their funeral. This includes supporting clients to pre-plan their funeral choices in cases where they may not want to place their family into an uncomfortable situation. One of the toughest roles is to mediate the discussion about what a deceased person may have wanted after they have passed away. It is so much easier to have that discussion together when you are alive.”

Annette Said, “It can also be rewarding to sit with a young man who knows he is dying and does not want his wife to worry about the details of a funeral.”

ACTIONS AND DEEDS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN WORDS…

The idea of signing up as an Undertaker never entered Annette’s mind until October 1997 when a close friend asked Annette to manage a family funeral.

Annette discovered the challenges with locating a Funeral Director who understood a grieving family’s needs whilst providing a respectful celebration of someone’s life at a funeral service.

Annette said, “It was my parish priest at the time who guided me in this direction and before I knew it, I had received a call one of the Funeral Directors to offer me a job. I really enjoy what I do - The role of an Undertaker requires compassion, kindness, respect, understanding and reliance.” Annette said, “I prefer to be called an Undertaker because it best describes what I do. Effectively I ‘Undertake to look after the body of the deceased and effect a celebration of a person’s life with their family and friends.”

When you speak to Annette about Women in the Workplace or Feminism and the role that women play, Annette makes the point that gender parity is important and the role of the feminine movement has served women well to promote women’s roles in our community, however Annette says, “The best form of feminism is the support and kindness offered between women and within society and we should all get on together to tackle the big 4 issues that are crumbling our society; Bullying, Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence and most importantly Mental Health.

Women have been warriors and leaders throughout history and I look forward to the day when we don’t need to talk about this.”

Annette Lourigan is the voice of love, hope and faith and genuinely shares her experiences with her clients to facilitate and deliver a dignified and respectful goodbye to loves ones. She also facilitates seminars on Body Donor Programs, End of life planning, Estate Planning, Funeral Ritual Planning and is working with Delia Lord, a community volunteer and friend to host the annual community Memorial Day where the community will release an environmentally friendly floating Turtle named, Harry. The community are welcome to put their messages of love inside Harry the Turtle prior to the community memory day which is set for Spring in 2018 – Watch this space. Q&A What do you do when you are not at work?

I laugh a lot - stay Healthy – Escape to my backyard amongst trees and nature.

I enjoy getting away to see my Dad in Country Victoria amongst the cow paddock – I also enjoy a glass of my favourite Pepper jack Shiraz – easy, smooth and delicious.

What is your advice to living a good life?

I think that you must walk true to your moral compass and do the right thing by everyone you meet to the best of your knowledge, experience and ability. You can talk and communicate as much as you like but if you are not prepared to act out of kindness and with goodwill – you are wasting your time. Good actions and deeds are more important than words.

I have walked the journey with over 230 families last year. Some of these journeys begin before a loved one dies and other families I meet at the time of death.

I would like to have my book published, ‘Notes from the Undertaker, Checkout Chick for God’ I would like to think that our community is a kinder place.

Should people pre-plan their funeral?

The Art of Dying is a gift that I wish all of us knew. It is the ability to die well, to die knowing that you are loved, knowing that you have control over what will happen to you as you transition from dying to death. A death happens and rips a family apart and throws a family into an abyss of the unknown. It’s always better to formulate a will and plan about your death in terms of your burial, legacy and celebration. I do advise people to come and meet me to at least chat about your thoughts.You talk about Hope and Faith - How do you define Hope and Faith?

Faith is the belief that your soul will rest peacefully in life as it will in death.

Hope is something that is deep seated - hope gives us the resilience to walk forward together.

There is nothing worse than an Undertaker being told she has cancer and walking that journey in parallel as you walk the journey of death with so many families – when I received this news about my own health, my faith was tested and strengthened. Fortunately, I

BEACHMERE RESIDENTS WELCOME MOBILE COVERAGE NEWS Stephen Jones MP and Susan Lamb MP joined with Beachmere residents in welcoming the announcement of a new mobile tower for the village. After a long campaign and more than 18 months, residents at Palm Lake Resort can see their message about poor mobile phone reception that has long put their safety and welfare at risk, has finally been heard.

Member for Longman, Susan Lamb MP has been campaigning with resident Pauline Holehouse to force the Government to deliver on its longstanding promise to build a new mobile base station.

Frustrated at the Turnbull Government’s silence, residents invited Labor’s Shadow Minister for Regional Communications, Stephen Jones MP, to help them lobby the Government to fix the Beachmere mobile black spot without further delays.

Six weeks ago Ms Lamb and Mr Jones wrote again to the Minister for Regional Communications, to convey residents’ concerns and demand a response.

Determined to get answers, the Member for Longman also raised the issue in Parliament over a week ago.

In April, some residents were advised via Senator McKenzie’s office that a tower would be operational in Beachmere before Christmas.

Susan Lamb said “we welcome this news, but we must remain vigilant to make sure the Government delivers on its promise. In other locations we have seen delays of more than 3 years between announcements and a tower being activated. This is a great step forward but we won’t be popping the champagne corks until the tower goes live.”

Beachmere Community Bank Steering Committee plan the upcoming Information Night

BEACHMERE COMMUNITY BANK INFORMATION NIGHT The Beachmere Community Bank Project Steering Committee is hosting an Information Night on Monday 11 June for those who would like to learn more about the proposed Community Bank that will service the Pumicestone and Caboolture area.

“Having reached a quarter of our required target of local pledges to support the bank”, Steering Committee Chairman Dale Martin said. “We are excited that the reality of opening a Community Bank, that puts money back into the community, is drawing closer.”

Dale says that the Information Night will give people the opportunity to meet the Steering Committee who are driving the project and hear from Malcolm Frizzell, Bendigo Bank Regional Community Manager. Malcolm has, over the last eighteen years, been involved with the successful development of Community

Banks in the Brisbane and Southwest QLD regions.

During the evening Malcolm will cover the benefits of having a Community Bank in the local area. For those that have already pledged, and people that are interested in pledging, the evening will provide an opportunity to have any questions answered about the project.

Beachmere Residents Say ‘Enough is Enough’ Simone Wilson MP, Member for Pumicestone, has launched a petition calling on the State Government to upgrade Beachmere Road.

Mrs Wilson said that for far too long the State Government has failed to put this much needed upgrade on the priority list.

“Recently I asked a direct question to the Premier seeking her promise to match the LNPs commitment for vital safety upgrades on Beachmere Road. The response I received was: The Department of Transport and Main Roads will continue to monitor the performance of Beachmere Road and assess its priority for upgrading along with other roads on the state-controlled road network.

“In other words, ‘not on our radar’. How utterly disappointing,” Mrs Wilson said.

“Ask anyone who travels this road and they will tell you that the shoulder of the road is dangerous and needs widening. I can not tell you how many people have told me about their near misses on this road”.

“My petition is not about reducing the speed limit along Beachmere Road but to simply make this road safe.

Police estimated the crowd at over 2000 people with the numbers joining in the march to the Commemorative Service larger than any previous year.

New Co-ordinators Lyn and Dave have backgrounds in aged care and health and safety systems and are setting up procedures to cope with the increase in demand expected as more locals learn of the Drop In centre and assistance offered and available.

Minister for Disability Services Coralee O’Rourke today announced applications for the annual Disability Community Event grants that recognise the achievements and contributions of people with disability would open on Monday, April 16.

“With around 830,000 Queenslanders identifying as having disability, it is vital to create a Queensland in which everybody has the same access to opportunities,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“Grants of up to $5000 are available to help organisations and community groups host events or activities during Disability Action Week, which will be held between 9 and 15 September 2018, or on International Day of People with Disability on 3 December.

“These celebrations will help empower people with disability and communities to work together to make change towards an all abilities Queensland.”

As the school turned five on Friday 13th April it has been a most welcomed and exciting time. While it has been wonderful to be sited at the back of the Beachmere Hall, the whole community is looking forward to moving to our permanent home later this year.

With full size classrooms we will be taking new enrolments. The school currently offers P-5, K-6 next year. Plans are underway for the High School. There are over 1000 Steiner/Waldorf Schools worldwide in more than 60 countries and 47 in Australia. The first Waldorf School was founded in Germany in 1919 and the movement turns 100 in 2019 with worldwide celebrations underway.

Bill shock hits record high under Labor – LNP Media Release The Liberal National Party is calling on the Palaszczuk Labor Government to stop ripping off Queenslanders as power bill shock soars.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said the Queensland Household Energy Survey showed record high stress levels for electricity prices under Labor.

“This is just another in a long line of reports that shows households are stressed to breaking point about covering the ridiculous cost of power,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Despite all the political hot air from Labor, the bills will continue to go up.

“Labor’s plan is just a money merry-goround and Queenslanders will continue to pay more.

“Prices have hit record levels on Labor’s watch and Queenslander’s should not have any faith in their ability to bring prices down.

“The plain truth is we’re paying too much for electricity because Labor is using electricity as a secret tax.

“This survey is a damning indictment on Labor’s energy policies and its secret tax on your bills.”

Queensland Household Energy Survey: •More than 4500 households surveyed •71 per cent of southeast Queensland households were concerned about covering the cost of power (of those, about 51 per cent were extremely concerned).

•59 per cent of regional Queensland households were extremely concerned about paying for electricity

Record electricity price falls ... ABS finds unheard-falls two quarters in a row – ALP Media Release The Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to continuing downward pressure on electricity prices was reflected in ABS statistics today which showed a 4.8 per cent drop in prices in Brisbane in the last quarter.

“This is in stark contrast to a 1.8 per cent increase recorded nationally in the latest Consumer Price Index figures,’’ Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said yesterday.

“These figures very clearly show that our measures to ease the pain for electricity users are working and we have only been able to achieve this because our electricity assets, unlike other states, remain publicly-owned.”

“Prices for electricity have now fallen in the last two quarters - the first quarterly falls in electricity prices in Brisbane.

“The annual increase during the LNP’s term peaked at 18.9 per cent. The price of electricity increased nearly 40 per cent during that period.

“During the Palaszczuk term of Government, the price has increased just 3.2 per cent.’’

Today’s ABS report, which compared eight capital cities, (Page 9) said: “The rises are partially offset by falls in electricity (-4.8%) and international holiday travel and accommodation (-3.6%). The fall in electricity prices is due to discounting by energy retailers.’’

YOU CAN BE THE JUDGE “Our $2 billion Affordable Energy Plan is well and truly kicking in for Queenslanders,’’ Dr Lynham said.

Under its Affordable Energy Plan, the government is providing: •a two-year cap on electricity price rises to average inflation •a $50 annual rebate over the next two years, as a dividend for customers from the publicly-owned electricity businesses.

South east Queenslanders also have been encouraged to shop around and choose the electricity retailer that offers the best deal.

Almost every SEQ electricity retailer signed up to the Affordable Energy Pledge to pass on all the savings to consumers that the government is making in our publicly-owned electricity system.

“Further proof that we are on the right path also came from the Queensland Competition Authority which flagged prices to drop in regional Queensland by up to 4.3 per cent following their draft determination. A final determination will be released on 31 May,’’ Dr Lynham said.

“If the final decision reflects the draft, regional households could expect to see a 2.3 per cent drop in their annual power bill in the next financial year, or an average of $35.

“Regional small businesses could see a drop in their power bill of 4.3 percent, or $110.

“Our Affordable Energy Plan continued to provide cost of living relief, including the EasyPay Rewards of $75 for regional households and $120 for regional small businesses if they adopt Ergon Energy’s monthly direct debit billing.

Labor bows to LNP’s fuel price campaign – LNP Media Release LNP Leader Deb Frecklington has welcomed the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s climb-down on fuel price monitoring after months of campaigning by the Opposition and motoring groups.

The adoption of real-time fuel price monitoring was the very first policy approved by the LNP’s new Shadow Cabinet.

“I have backed real-time fuel price monitoring since I became LNP Leader because I understand the financial pressures Queenslanders are facing,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Fuel prices have rocketed in 2018 but the only action the Palaszczuk Labor Government has taken has been to rubbish real-time fuel price monitoring.

“The Palaszczuk Government has finally and grudgingly admitted it was totally wrong.

“If I were Premier, this decision would have been taken months ago.

“This decision has only been taken because of the pressure the LNP and motoring groups have applied to this Government.

“I promise drivers who have been failed

by Labor that I will keep the pressure on the Palaszczuk Government to ensure they finally deliver lower fuel prices.”

Palaszczuk Government to tackle fuel prices – ALP Media Release The Palaszczuk Government has announced a two-year trial of fuel pricing monitoring to take effect in Queensland as soon as possible.

A working group with industry stakeholders, including the RACQ, will be established to oversee the implementation of the fuel pricing monitoring system.

“We know Queensland motorists are rightly concerned about high fuel prices,’’

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said today.

“While the primary responsibility for fuel pricing remains with the Federal Government and ACCC, the Palaszczuk Government is prepared to do whatever it can to assist Queensland motorists.’’

Dr Lynham said the Government had studied reports from Griffith University and the RACQ on fuel price monitoring.

“While the reports provide differing views, we have determined that a two-year trial of fuel pricing monitoring should take effect in Queensland as soon as possible.

“I would like to thank RACQ, Griffith University and industry representatives for the constructive input they have provided.’’

Dr Lynham said the two-year trial would ensure that more current data is available to motorists and will not disadvantage small independent retailers.

“All fuel retailers will be required to collate and publish their latest prices online, on their own websites and their own apps, within 15 minutes of any change.

“The system will be required to have in-built safeguards against retailers’ price fixing and not inflict unnecessary red tape.

“We have very real concerns about the LNP proposal. Their proposal, which has only surfaced of late after years of inactivity, including when they were in Government, is an expensive, airy-fairy scheme based on limited information.

“Our proposal is supported by a Griffith University study of the petrol prices monitoring schemes in NSW and the

Northern Territory.

“Despite a $20 million price tag for the NSW scheme, the study reports a very limited impact in metropolitan Sydney, no impact in regional New South Wales and an actual increase in the price of fuel in Darwin.

“For Metropolitan Queensland, the report says: ‘a similar scheme implemented in Brisbane may have a less significant downward impact on ULP retail prices compared to the observed impact in Sydney.’

“In regional Queensland, the study says: ‘results for NSW and regional Northern Territory suggest that such a scheme will have either negative or upward impact on the average monthly retail ULP prices’.’’

Dr Lynham said the study said what the Government has been saying all along that the key to lowering the price of fuel is increasing competition.

“It is crucial though that the Federal Government plays the primary role. We cannot do this alone – a fact conveniently overlooked by the LNP. “A streamlined national approach is necessary.

“A federal excise of 38 cents per litre is a significant percentage of the price of petrol which could be addressed as soon as next week in the Federal Budget.

Dr Lynham said the Palaszczuk Government would continue to examine options of how we can increase competition in the fuel market and ensure that motorists are not ripped off by the big players in the petroleum industry.

“We are prepared to stand up for Queensland motorists. It is time the Federal Government did their bit too.’’

They focus on the emotion of anger and stay in that emotional space, which on amplifies the emotion of anger. Yet if you down a level and consider what is really at the core of your anger, you will discover a whole new meaning to the situation.

So let’s break down the coming month’s energy for you.

Week 1 – May 7th-13th - Ocean Calling Ocean calling is an indication that there is an imbalance of being stuck within your own head. Trying to think of solutions rather than feeling into them.

When you spend too much time in your head, you can become tuck or trapped within your own mind.

Getting to the ocean is not only about rebalancing your energies, there is a physiological component to it as well. As you sit near the ocean you breathe in the salt into your body which helps communication between cells, and also through the action f the waves you heartbeat starts to fall into that same rhythm as the waves allowing you to become more present within your surroundings/life.

Mother Earth provides an array of natural beauty that helps humans on so many levels.

So get to the ocean and distress, rebalance & there you will feel a renewed zest for life again.

Week 2 – May 14th – 20th May – Soul (New Moon on 15th) As this week unfolds with the New Moon energy, this is where you are given insight through random thoughts dropping into your consciousness of dreams/goal/ desires or things you want to improve.

Before you dismiss these ideas, contemplate these suggestions. Step out of your logic mind which reminds you of the should do’s & have to’s constricting you thinking your too busy or things can’t change & give yourself permission to explore the possibilities that are being presented to you.

Week 3 – May 21st – 27th – Dreams When you begin a dream, motivation keeps you excited and full of gusto. Yet those feelings fall away and this is where focus, consistent habits and accessing becomes more important.

Dreams can become reality if you put the actionable steps in place to secure that outcome for the whole duration that it takes to come true. Not just the beginning phase, but for long term success.

Week 4 – May 28th – 3rd June– Grounding (Full Moon on the 30th) Its interesting how the start of this month and end of the month are both around Mother Earth energies.

Grounding helps keep a stable mind, body, soul & spirited. When deeper emotions surface around the full moon period, we can become internalized, over sensitive & over react. Take that as a sign that balance is required.

Walking on the grass barefoot 10 minutes a day helps to neutralize these heightened emotions & stay calm. With a calm mind, you can make decisions more

clearly.

MAY “THE MONTH OF THE MUM”

My Mum is 92 on the 5th of May, and I constantly brag about how awesome she is to anyone who will listen.

It’s not that she is the age she is, it’s her attitude and inner strength that constantly make me glow with pride and I feel ridiculously grateful to have this amazing woman in my life. Mum is still fiercely independent but will always put her family first. Even though her “Baby” is now 58, myself and my siblings will always be her babies even though we are all well past the age of needing “mothering”. At 92 she will still drop everything to help us if we need it – she really is our precious Mum, Nana and Great Nana.

Of course, because of Mothers Day, May is seen by most people as Mums Month, and hopefully most of us spend at least one day appreciating what our Mum does for us.

I recently watched a short film about a job advertisement. The job required the successful applicant to be on call 24/7 365 days a year for the rest of their lives. They were only to sleep when their “associate” slept, only to eat when their associate was feed, only sat if their associate was not requiring them and were given no holidays. If they were given more “associates” their job increased two or three fold. If their associate moved up to the same level as them they would then have twice as much responsibility as their associate and in some cases twice as much work.

All of the applicants were horrified by this job, they complained that it was

illegal to not have a holiday, to work such ridiculous hours, they certainly had no intention of doing this job for no income and told the person advertising the job that they would never find anyone prepared to do this job.

Of course the job was being a Mum, and then progressing to a Nana. When each of the applicants were told this they cried, and immediately contacted their mum and thanked them for always being there. It was a wakeup call that made them realise the hard work and sacrifice that Mums do.

I see this all the time with Mums/ Nanas that come to us to stay fit and healthy. Mums are the first ones to change their “My” times if something happens in the family. Nanas disappear in the school holidays to help their children cope with their children. Mums are tired, stressed, these days they usually work out of the house as well, and in a lot of cases they are caring for their Mum and their children at the same time.

They are pulled tight with demands to keep everyone happy, but what about them!?

When we run our mums into the ground with constant demands for their time, do any of us appreciate that, just maybe, Mum needs some Her time? And I’m not just talking about going to the loo without someone calling out a question about a lost shoe or what the next meal will be.

Senior Gentle Warm Up Your Body Exercises Before You Start!

If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to the exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself.

If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

These exercises are a great way to “warm up” your body especially as the morning get cooler. Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only as many times as you are comfortable with! Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. You can do these sitting on your bed or in a stable chair.

WARM UP YOUR WAIST

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, your toes in a straight line and with your knees just slightly bent . With your hands on your hips slowly turn your upper body to the left. Bring your body back to the centre and then slowly turn your body to the right. Repeat 5 times each way or as many as you are comfortable doing.

SHOULDERS WARM UP

Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up.

Rest your left hand on your right shoulder.

Hold your left elbow with your hand and very gently pull it toward your body for 10 to 30 seconds.

Return to the starting position.

Repeat with your right arm. Repeat 5 times each way or as many as you a comfortable doing

ANKLE WARM UP

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, your toes in a straight line and with your knees just slightly bent. Put one hand on the back of a chair or a table or the kitchen bench and stand tall. Stand steadily on one leg and raise the other slightly off the ground. Slowly draw circles with your foot 8 times clockwise then 8 times anti-clockwise or as many as you are comfortable with.

Return to the starting position.

Change supporting leg and repeat with the other foot.

CHEST & BACK WARM UP

Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up. Bring your hands up to chest height. Bend your elbows and with your palms facing the front. Pull your elbows backward slowly, keeping your arms close to your body. Push your palms forward slowly.

Return to the starting position.

Repeat 8 times or as many as you feel comfortable doing.as you feel comfortable with.

Why not make sure she never feels guilty about having time to feel healthier, happier and to be able to slam a ball with all her strength until she can laugh about the fact that she is the only one to ever clean the toilet. Government partnership leads to motor neurone disease drug candidate A potential drug to treat motor neurone disease (MND) is set to emerge from a partnership between The University of Queensland and the Queensland Government.

UQ’s Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) is working with a Queensland company, NuNerve, to develop and manufacture the drug candidate for use in clinical trials in 2019.

Science Minister Leeanne Enoch said the work provided real hope for people with the devastating disease, and demonstrated the benefits of investing in science infrastructure.

“In 2005, the Queensland Government partnered with UQ to establish the Queensland Brain Institute, now one of the world’s major medical research institutes.

The government and university agreed that Queensland would receive a return on investment from any new therapeutic drugs that were developed by the institute,” Ms Enoch said.

“Queensland will receive its first commercial return from the Queensland Brain Institute from the development of this new MND drug candidate. This bodes well for future translational opportunities for Queensland science. It also highlights the long-term nature of these investments in science infrastructure.”

In 2005 the Government also committed to establishing a biologics manufacturing facility in Woolloongabba.

Patheon, part of Thermo Fisher Scientific, operates the facility and has been contracted by NuNerve for the project.

“The establishment of this biologics manufacturing facility shows remarkable insight and underlines how key government investment pays significant dividends for the state,” Ms Enoch said.

The drug candidate blocks a protein known as EphA4, the subject of more than a decade of research by QBI’s Professor Perry Bartlett with Emeritus Professor Andrew Boyd from UQ and QIMR Berghofer.

UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj said the discovery opened the way for this exciting development.

“The research showed that EphA4 was the key molecule involved in the guidance of motor neurons from the brain to targets in the spinal cord and was also responsible for impeding the recovery of motor neurons following injury.”

Professor Bartlett said the researchers believed the finding would have important implications for the future treatment of MND, spinal cord injury, as well as other neurological diseases.

“It is gratifying to see our discovery translated into a potential treatment for patients with MND.” NuNerve has licensed the intellectual property from UniQuest, UQ’s commercialisation company, as part of its focus on new technologies to treat or prevent the neurological disease that progressively attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

The project is supported by Peter Goodenough Corpus, Spinal Cure Australia (estate of Lisa Palmer), the BioPharmaceuticals Australia Development Fund, and FightMND.

Seeing a Psychologist For many people, the idea of seeing a psychologist may be confronting, as it usually means talking about and sitting with unpleasant thoughts and feelings about ourselves and our lives – past, present and future - and the people in it. There may be concerns about being ‘judged’ for who we are, what we have done and what has happened to us.

Most of us will have a problem in life that we can’t resolve on our own. This may cause or contribute to issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship troubles or unhealthy behaviours that help us ‘feel better’ for a while. Family and friends can be great support but are unlikely to be comfortable with our distress. They can encourage us to avoid the very source of our suffering and therefore its resolution.

Sometimes they add to our feelings of being judged, or not being good enough and so on. We keep doing the same things to deal with the problem and nothing changes. We become stuck. We feel trapped and hopeless. It all gets ‘too hard’ to do it alone.

A psychologist is a source of impartial, accepting and non-judgemental help.

The ability to explore concerns in confidentiality with an independent professional enables us to examine patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving that are not really helpful for us and to explore different approaches to old problems. With a psychologist, we are heard and acknowledged; our feelings are validated. Strengths are identified and developed. We are assisted to explore and try something different, such as a new

perspective, a new way of communicating to others or a new behaviour. We are not carried, or ‘fixed’. We are supported to discover and make changes that will help us and to persist with these until they become our new patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. We learn not to fear change, but to accept and embrace it as a normal part of life.

For some people, the degree of wellbeing they experience is affected by physical injury, illness or continual pain.

For others, there may be permanent psychiatric conditions. Along with appropriate medical assistance, a psychologist can help people to improve the quality and enjoyment of their lives in the presence of these conditions.

Whatever the problems are, the willingness to work on them and make meaningful change is a vital ingredient in the mix. The experience of lasting distress is a strong signal that something needs to change. Seeing a psychologist may mean sitting through some unpleasant thoughts and feelings yet is likely to help with the resolution of the problem and significant relief of the distress that it produces.

In recent weeks, Cranky Lizard’s attention has been captured by the public comments and media debate about the changing of history... “ History “ is defined in the Oxford Dictionary, in part, as “ the study of past events, especially human affairs. “ – as opposed to ‘ archaeology ‘ which is a study of ancient affairs – and, somewhere in the halls of academia there will a person who will know, or claim to know, when history stops and archaeology starts ! But, we should not trouble ourselves about that here !!

There are other definitions and other interpretations, because History lends itself, not always accurately, to subjective definitions.

History is the story of us. It is who we are, where we come from, why we do the things we do and why we hold onto the rituals that define our society.

The history of Australia , as we know it to be, contributes substance and strength to the fabric of our National story – not all of our stories are good, some probably do not reflect what actually happened because no Australian alive today, can speak with any authority on events that occurred 200 years ago or thereabouts.

No one can.

History’s credibility and authority comes from evidence. Evidence comprises written records compiled at the time, drawings and sketches of events as they occurred, preserved artefacts and relics that bear silent witness of their use, very old photographic records, old newspaper cuttings and records, diaries and logs from farming communities , sheep and cattle station records and, obviously, anecdotal evidence [ basically stories and folk tales passed from one to another over time, including the oral traditions of Australian Aboriginal people.]

All of this mass of evidence, assessed objectively and dispassionately, by credible observers lead us to form conclusions about what actually

happened, where it happened, who gained, who lost, and, how those events at that time affect our communities as we know them today.

That is how, in the opinion of Cranky Lizard, our society can form its view of the world in a sensible context, based upon the existing evidence of past events.

So what ? You may ask ?

Well, it is accepted that humans have always been inclined to ‘ gild the lilly ‘, so to speak ; to tweak the stories to make them reflect our view of events in a more complimentary light from our point of view, to right what some consider to be past wrongs, not actual wrongs, mind you, just an opinion from one or two people of what they consider to be past wrongs !!

We accept, in cynical terms, that, in wartime, ‘ the winners write the history ‘, and so it is, but the damning and irrefutable evidence of the war cemeteries counter acts the more hysterical claims of war historians.

And, in the month of April, Australia commemorates hugely significant events in our Nation’s story.

ANZAC DAY This is a day, in the life of our Nation when we reflect on terrible events that occurred during World War 1, in Europe and in Turkey ; events that brought widespread death and mourning to our young Nation, but, events also, that by the passage of time, have served to define us as Australians.

We know about this, because military records from that time detail the events, the personalities, the sheer horror, the brutality and the heroism of Australian men and women enduring these terrible times.

For example, we know the story of Villers Bretonneux – how the advancing German

Army was halted by Australian troops ; we know how the Australians fought ;we know how the French feel about that and we know that one man, an Australian military leader was responsible for devising and implementing new methods of a applying military force.

We know that these new tactics gave our troops tremendous advantage on the battlefield ; all of this is a matter of history.

We also know that this leader was General Sir John Monash. An engineer from Melbourne. Due to his expertise on the battlefield he was Knighted by the King of England, a signal honour in those times and he was promoted to the rank of full General, a rank few men & women anywhere ever hold, and a rank, within the military, that carries enormous respect, enables command of Armies and places the holder of that rank well and truly in the upper echelons of our National society.

All of this occurred in 1918. One hundred years ago. Monash, his achievements, his life with its strengths and weaknesses, has been detailed in our written military history and we can, as we should, reflect on his story with pride.

But we have now, some opinion pieces in the national media, commenting that Monash deserves further reward.

Agitation for further promotion for Monash, to the rank of Field Marshall is occurring – some give it credence some do not !!

Cranky Lizard maintains that you can’t change history. In his life, Monash received the accolades of a grateful nation, what now, can be gained by further promotion one hundred years down the track of life ??

Is it to right a wrong ? Cranky Lizard asks what wrong was done, to whom ??

not have enough troops under arms to warrant an officer of that rank.

There was another Australian Army leader in that terrible war who distinguished himself and his men with brilliant leadership and who held, equal rank and knight-hoods as General Monash.

That man was General Harry Chauvel, the leader of the Australian Light Horse and the man who took Beersheba in a cavalry charge of audacity and daring that reflected not only upon him, but also upon the superb men he commanded and the magnificent horses they rode – The Walers !

Both of these Australian leaders were acknowledged by the British military as exceptional officers which is why they were both Knighted and promoted to the rank of full General.

Both men have been credited with positively affecting the outcome of World War 1, in their respective spheres of battle, one in the deserts of the Middle East, the other on the battlefields of France.

Cranky Lizard points out that if we, as a Nation, begin to hand out further military promotions one hundred years down the track, then logic and common -sense tells us that we are obliged to consider that case of General Harry Chauvel of the Australian Light Horse as well : he is equally deserving.

And, let’s say, we as a Nation did that, we would then have two Field Marshalls from a War that never provided one at the time…and that would be ridiculous.

Cranky Lizard strongly believes that history should remain undisturbed, we live with what we have, that is our story, good, bad, indifferent or whatever ??

That is who we are and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Cranky Lizard quietly suggests that as a consequence of fiddling with history we may well see the awarding of post- humous life membership to the Committee of the local bowls club ; now wouldn’t that be some- thing ??

A self-professed “people person”, he enjoys meeting people and loves life. This is also evident as he has also been a professional musician for much of his life, performing here and overseas with bands such as Cold Chisel, Dragon and Midnight Oil.

“With council’s free tipping service, many people use the Ningi facility, and it’s also the home of our community’s exciting oyster shell recycling project, so to have heard that vandalism and break-ins are taking place is really disappointing,” Cr Savige said.

Over the past few years Eric’s Facebook page titled The Truth - Moreton Bay has gained momentum in highlighting the shortfalls in the council and listening to residents’ concerns.

“Ratepayers don’t deserve to be footing the bill for these acts, which is why we’re now installing security cameras and fencing to deter these acts.”

Unexpected Money Scams How the Scam Works Scammers tell you out of the blue that you are entitled to money precious gems, gold or valuable shares but you need to make upfront payments to get them. You will never receive what was promised and there will always be an excuse for why you have to pay more. If you pay the fees, you will lose your money.

Rebate or reclaim scams involve a scammer telling you that you are owed money for reasons such as overpaid taxes, bank fees or some sort of compensation. However, before you can get your money you are asked to pay a small administration fee.

With inheritance scams, scammers pose as lawyers, bankers or foreign officials and tell you that you are entitled to a large inheritance or offer you a share in a scheme because you have same name as someone who died. They often use official-looking documents and ask you to make payments for fees and taxes before you can receive the inheritance. They can also ask for your personal details to fill out ‘official paperwork’. This means you might have your identity stolen as well as your money.

Commonly called Nigerian scams may have originated in West Africa but can come from anywhere in the world. They involve scammers tell you they need your

Community help to secure a large fortune which they are desperately trying to transfer out of their country. They may claim the fortune is a hidden stash of money, gold or assets abandoned by a corrupt government or official and if you agree to receive it they will give you a large share when it is safe to do so. Like all of these scams, they will say you first need to pay taxes, bank charges or fees for anti-terrorism and money laundering checks before they can send the money.

These scams commonly come from overseas and ask for payment via wire transfer but may also ask for bank transfers or other payment methods.

If you fall for these scams, you will never receive anything from the scammer and lose any money you sent.

Toastmasters International District 69 Conference On Saturday April 28th the Toastmasters International District 69 conference had Toastmasters from Northern NSW, Queensland, Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea gathering to meet, greet and compete at the one of the toughest Pubic Speaking competitions held.

While the conference covers two days and four different public speaking categories the jewel in the Toastmasters crown is the International Speech.

To qualify to compete in the International Speech competition at the District 69 conference, competitors would have already had to win at their Toastmasters Club, their Area and their Division.

On Saturday night the crowd gathered in the Ipswich Civic Centre to hear eight accomplished speakers present their International speeches and to discover who would go on to represent the District in Chicago USA in August 2018.

An International Speech should inspire people to make changes to that would improve their lives or the lives of those around them. Cathy McGillivray from Bribie Toastmasters was the third speaker for the evening with her speech entitled “It Will Ruin Your Life”, which focuses on how your choices will either lead you toward your goals or away from them.

The winner of the competition was Ally Hannon from Adventurers Toastmasters Club (Fortitude Valley) 2nd place was Pushpa Vida from Alice Springs

International competitors Toastmasters and 3rd place was Dean Collins from Bundaberg Simply Speaking Toastmasters.

Although Cathy did not place she was proud to be standing alongside the best speakers in the district, some of whom have been competing at this level for over 10 years.

“The speakers were incredible and to even be included in this group of people is amazing, I am so very happy and proud to have represented Bribie Toastmasters at the district conference once again. And of course, Toastmasters is not just about competing in speech contests, that is an option for those who wish to, but you can be a Toastmaster and never compete. Toastmasters are there to help anyone improve their public speaking, confidence and leadership. I have made some great friends from other clubs all over the district and I know I can visit a Toastmasters club anywhere in the world and be welcomed” Cathy said.

If you are interested in improving your public speaking or just want to beat your shyness, then come along to a Bribie Toastmasters meeting. The meetings are held at 7pm for a 7.15pm start, on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month in the ANZAC room of the Bribie Island RSL. Guests are more than welcome!

Vale Vic Clayton Vic Clayton was born in Paddington, New South Wales on 20 January 1943 to Jean and Douglas Clayton. He was just one of a large family and his “formative years” ended when he joined the Army and transferred to Wacol as a Gunner in the Fourth Field Regiment at Wacol. Vic completed seven parachute jumps and always remembered the princely “jump” allowance of “seven shillings extra pay”.

Vic left the army after three years and settled down with his wife Gaye. Vic worked as a Rigger, for a large neon sign firm, travelling throughout Queensland for the next ten years. Working with his mate, a qualified electrician, they updated signage at service stations and he often remarked that he had the dubious honour of having had a beer at every hotel in the state.

Vic started a business installing neon and under awning signs and lived in Arana Hills and then the Redland Bay area for many years. He was a volunteer at the Volunteer Coastal Patrol in Redland Bay from approximately 1979 to 1988, acting as Skipper or crew on rescue boats, as well as on the Communications radio and at numerous fund raising events. Vic was also a founding member of the Arana Hills Junior Rugby League Football Club.

Vic was part of the flood rescue team around Windsor in the 1974 floods and assisted in two rescues that stuck with him

amongst the many he was involved in – one pregnant woman going into labour and another of a male heart attack victim – plucking both from rising flood waters and delivering to waiting ambulances at dryer locations.

Following the sale of the business, Vic worked for Brambles Security, initially as a Casual Security Guard but worked his way up to Senior Supervisor, and whilst there returned to TAFE to gain further qualifications. In 1991 the family moved to Beachmere where Vic spent his semi retirement working as a truck driver and as an attendant at the Beachmere Service Station.

Vic was a founding member of the Beachmere Sports Fishing Club and was a staunch follower of the Beachmere Senior team, the Pelicans and also the Juniors and Colts teams of Wynnum Manly Football Club. Vic acted as President of the Pelicans Senior Rugby League in their early years.

Vic later joined the Woodford Golf Club where he “chased a little white ball around” and then decided he would lose less balls if he started Bowls, so he joined the Beachmere Bowls Club, where he was a member for several years.

A keen fisherman, Vic loved beach camping and the outdoor life, particularly Rainbow Beach. He loved all sports and he also loved animals including a sulphur crested Cockatoo named Herbie. He was a bird breeder for many years, giving away his hand raised cockatiels, masks, peach face and African ring neck parrots for many years and before it was “popular” to own hand raised birds.

He also raised and trained “Red ‘n’ Tan” Dobermans as guard dogs. British Staffordshire Terriers then captured his heart. He is often remembered driving his mobility scooter around Beachmere with Sok (Son of Knuckles) riding “shotgun”.

Vic is survived by his wife of 54 years and one month, Gaye, children and grand children and will be remembered as a kind, generous, straight shooting bloke that “would do anything for you”.

Cambodia has become what is referred to as a destination of choice. Even though it didn’t make the top 10 in 2017 it still holds a fascination that rivals Vietnam for Australians.

This is in part is due to the number of UNESCO sites and in particular the temple of Angkor Wat dating back to the 12th century. For 812 years stories were accumulating and religions changing as the rulers of the time introduced Hinduism and Buddhism as the doctrines for their people.

Cambodia dates back to Jayavarman VII who reigned between 1181- 1218.

The Khmer Empire stretched forth to encompass parts of modern day Thailand, Malaysia, Burma, Laos and Vietnam and was colonized by the French in the 19th century.

Life through religion was one of order and peace for many centuries under successive rulers of the Jayavarman dynasty. But peace would not prevail for eternity when in the 1970s Cambodia suffered heavy carpet bombing by the

Why is Bribie Island such a bloody good place to live…?

What follows are the impressions of the writer who has been visiting Bribie Island for a number of years.

No one was interviewed, all opinions and impressions are mine, except for the flaming sunsets…they belong to God. ] It is about half way between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast and it is attached to Australia by thin wooden bridge, that’s all.

It is a sand island like many of the islands of the South East Queensland Coast ; the Southern half is covered by housing and urban development whilst the Northern half is a protected park sprinkled with paper bark swamps, small billabongs, old World War II cement bunkers, long, hard, curving beaches of golden sand and a vulnerable neck at the Northern most point where the Pacific Ocean maintains its timeless assault on the sand dunes as it continues its quest to join with Pumicestone Passage. Pumicestone Passage is a beautiful tidal passage between Bribie and Australia ; it is home to thousands of seabirds, pelagic fish, mangrove swamps, mud flats, mosquitoes, tidal estuaries, old house boats and, at times, a certain natural stillness with echoes of songs and the silent shuffling of the thousands of feet that have passed that way.

The Western side of the Island is characterised by lovely, calm beaches kissed by the waters of Pumicestone Passage on any normal day, but, when the ocean becomes ugly, the rips and tides of the Passage are not friendly ; the combination of an outgoing tide and a strong South Easterly provides a challenge for any sea going mortal in any kind of vessel.

And vessels there are ! The region is an amateur and professional boating ‘ mecca ‘ – on any given day there will be kayaks, tinnies, yachts big and small,

bustling, prickly trawlers hurrying seaward so that they may satisfy their destiny with prawns and larger ocean fish and sleek, luxurious vessels humming through the waters crewed by people who are simply enjoying the pleasure of the sea, the sun and the wind – their relaxed, open faces indicate that they have not recently listened to any television news or read any national print media.

Along the Western shore, from White Patch to Bongaree, sprinkled among the gums trees, paper barks and casuarinas, are clean, busy sea-food places where delicious ‘ fish and chips ‘, that wonderful legacy of English food , is readily and cheaply available. Motels, caravan parks, hotels and time share apartments spread generously along the waterfront ; these are ready destinations for travellers and tourists seeking peace and respite from mainland madness.

Life has an orderly pace on the Western side of Bribie – not hurried, but purposeful although relaxed and one feels this as you cross the bridge and become a small part of the island’s story.

Urban development in the centre and South of the Island has a similar look to urban development anywhere along the Australian mainland coastal fringe, but there are trees and travellers palms which make the difference along with an underlying sense of community not generally experienced in mainland urban areas.

The Island has an abundance of community assets – the 3A University is a remarkable place, offering a wide range of courses, a bewildering array of options including tactile and mental challenges for all ages, all preferences and all genders. This place is truly a wonderful community asset – its administrators, managers and instructors are impressive and deserve much credit – they make a serious contribution to the

quality of Island life.

Art Centres, Libraries and Parks contribute to the ‘cocktail of interesting pastimes’, [ sounds like an interesting drink !! ], on Bribie, as do the canal estates towards the centre of the Island. Standing quietly on the edge of one of these canals, one can see curious maritime visitors, a dolphin or two, nosing about, lost looking turtles, not many but some and mysterious splashes and swirls in the canals hint at life not visible to mere humans but present nevertheless !!

The canal estates are busy, barbecue smoke floats about the place from sloping lawns and verandas, life unfolds at a leisurely pace and friendly waves to passing vessels are more likely than rigid fingers.

The East Coast is a different place. It is washed by the Pacific Ocean, although much of it lies in the lee of the sand islands further West. Woorim has a splendid Surf Lifesaving Club with very competitive clubbies keeping a watch over the swimmers and bathers in the relatively calm waters of the Southern end.

Beaches of soft golden sand are easily reached along paths through the small sand hills of the Western side.

This is an ocean beach and the swimming experience is quite different from Pumicestone Passage on the Eastern side. There is no huge surf, but there are rips and currents and every now and then a small swell arrives with just enough punch in it to remind you that you are swimming in the Pacific Ocean.

These ocean beaches run all the way North to Caloundra, pretty much !! They are hard sand and four wheel drive vehicles can move along safely, enjoying the apparent freedom of movement on a hard sand ocean beach, and, as usual, the normal human examples of stupidity and ‘ hooning ‘ occur, with vehicle roll-overs and casualties the result.

There is not much of this because the areas are well

controlled – but, it happens !!

Around Woorim is a bustling hub of apartments, service providers, food outlets and leisure stores along with the ubiquitous, delicious ‘ fish and chip ‘ places, which are an excellent feature of life on Bribie.

Four wheel drive tours of the central National Park, with its billabongs, sand dunes, mangrove patches and secret fishing spots allow access for many to these places in a controlled and sensitive manner, which is essential to the long term survival of this rather wonderful National Park.

The Park has its mysteries – stories of hermits living in bark huts, strange markings in the tidal sands, long forgotten middens and birds which come from Asia, just to check on how we are going !!

This island is a splendid place to grow up children. It is a splendid place to spend one’s later years and it is a splendid place to be an energetic, vibrant 30-40 year old, making a life from fishing, swimming and all the other water sports available.

For the most part, there is no need to travel to the mainland – life is and can be, insular on Bribie and that may sound redundant, but Hey ?? What is a little redundancy from time to time ??

Also, from time to time, sunsets occur on the Western side which defy sensible description. Flaming skies, silhouetted birds, smoke from Turner’s Camp and lines of pelicans, the galleons of the skies, capture your mind and the images remain, forever.

Bribie Island really is a bloody good place to live. [ So far the writer has not talked to the local bunyip mob…they are there, they are just not ready to talk… yet !! ]

Sue and Chris Venderley opened Sue's cafe and takeaway in June of 2014. Being American and Australian, the food has blended into just that. A very well balanced mix of both styles of food. Sue's 40+ years as a chef of Aussie cuisine and Chris's influence of American style foods has culminated into what it is today. Most of what we use is locally sourced meat and veggies and this shows in the flavours we create. Community organisations can benefit from grants of up to $35,000 thanks to the Palaszczuk Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund’s (GCBF) latest round of grants, which opens today.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said community groups were able to apply for funding between $500 and $35,000 for Round 97 of Queensland’s largest one-off grants program.

“Every year the Gambling Community Benefit Fund distributes about $54 million of gaming revenue to Queensland communities,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“This funding allows our vital community groups to purchase much-needed equipment and upgrade their facilities.

“In our most recently announced round, the Palaszczuk Government approved $13.69 million to 659 community groups.

“That’s cash for a diverse range of community groups across Queensland for projects such as facility upgrades, shade materials, air conditioning, and kitchen equipment.

“Recipients spanned specialist care providers and wildlife hospitals, to sporting clubs and men’s sheds.

“And this is what the Gambling Community Benefit Fund is all about; allowing a broad range of community organisations to upgrade their facilities and purchase equipment so they can improve the services they offer the community.

“These not-for-profit groups are the lifeblood of our communities and it’s vital that we support them as much as possible.”

Mrs D’Ath encouraged eligible organisations to submit applications through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund online grants’ portal.

“This fund is open to organisations that have not-for-profit objectives and are community based,” she said.

“And it’s easy to apply - tutorial videos make the application process simple and uncomplicated.”

Groups have until midnight May 31 to submit their application.

Moreton Bay pledges to go to plastic straw-free

Moreton Bay joins Cairns Regional Council in being among the first councils in Queensland to vote to remove singleuse straws from its venues and events.

“Other areas across the country, including Cairns, are taking up the pledge to phase out single-use plastic straws, and we don’t want Moreton Bay to lag behind everyone else.

Moreton Bay Council has joined Cairns Regional Council in being among the first Councils in Queensland to vote to remove single-use straws from its venues and events and has pledged to go plastic straw-free.

At Council’s meeting on 17 April, 2018 we adopted a motion to remove single-use plastic straws from Council venues such as the Queensland State Equestrian Centre and from local Council-run programs.

I was inspired by young Queensland Molly Steer and her “Straw No More” Project to push for this initiative and while it’s a simple measure, hopefully it will make a huge difference to the overall amount of single-use, nonbiodegradable plastic straws ending up in landfill or littering our waterways.

Single-use plastic straws can have a devastating impact on our waterways with marine animals easily being able to choke on the small pieces of plastic.

Individually, we may only use one plastic straw to drink, but when we

multiply that by the thousands of visitors to Council venues each year, you can see the high volume that is discarded.

Australia uses 10 million straws a day which is a staggering amount.

It is a simple way to help to protect one of our country’s most important coastal resources - Moreton Bay - and simple measures such as this ensure that it will thrive for generations to come.

A number of businesses and cafes in Moreton Bay are using re-usable cups and biodegradable cutlery and the Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism will review the use of single-use plastic straws at its events and functions too.

I hope this move by Council will also inspire more local businesses to follow our lead.

National Greyhound Adoption Day promotes greyhounds as pets Queenslanders are being urged to consider adopting a greyhound on the inaugural National Greyhound Adoption Day, which was on Sunday 29 April.

“This great program administered by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) sees all dogs thoroughly vetted before being put up for adoption.

Racing Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said National Greyhound Adoption Day was a great opportunity to connect former racing dogs with new owners in a caring family environment.

“Every dog that enters GAP is temperament tested, de-sexed, wormed, microchipped and vaccinated by a vet.

“Greyhounds can be great pets, once their career on the track is over,” he said.

“So I’m encouraging anyone who is considering getting a new pet to have a think about adopting a greyhound.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s highly successful Greyhound Adoption Program, GAP, has re-homed almost 500 former racing dogs over the last two years.

“So if you want a new pet, we can connect you with a greyhound that’s been professionally cared for and fully vetted.

“QRIC is internationally recognised as a world-leader in racing integrity and it’s building a strong reputation for excellence in animal welfare through initiatives such as GAP.” National Adoption Day will be held at the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club, Albion and in Townsville at Yapper Valley Pet Resort, Woodstock.

One of THE BEST choices we ever made was deciding to give a rescued Greyhound called Tiger a home.

Tiger came from a rescue kennel where he ended up after he was supposed to be euthanised just because he didn’t win enough races.

He is an amazing, gentle, loving, cuddly, laid back furkid and so we couldn’t help but put our hand up for more rescued Greyhounds and now have Chilli and Gretel as part of our family too.

All of these gentle cuddle monsters would been killed, even though they were less than 3 years old, because they were no longer making money for those that were racing them.

These sleepy, snuggly, huge hearted furkids are the best behaved furkids we have ever had and we recommend Greyhounds as pets to anyone who wants a loving companion who doesn’t bark, doesn’t like long walks, hates running and loves sleeping almost 23 hours a day!! And of course you don’t have to go through the destructive puppy stage.

Please if you are thinking about another furkid look into a rescue Greyhounds, you may lose some sofa space but you will gain love and endless cuddles from the biggest heart in dogland.

Probus Club of Bribie Island enjoy a cruise around the waterways of Caloundra “Forty members of The Probus Club of Bribie Island Inc jagged the only day of brilliant sunshine and clear skies last month to enjoy a cruise around the waterways of Caloundra. The cruise meandered through the Pelican Waters canals before venturing out into the Pumicestone Passage, following the western shoreline of Bribie Island, almost to the Caloundra bar. Members were able to see close-up the ravages of erosion affecting the top end of Bribie Island, the extent of which is believed may eventually cause a breakthrough from Pumicestone Passage to the sea.

The sight of a cleverly named catamaran moored in the passage gave rise to an a-hoc history lesson by one of the group on the adventures of Mathew Flinders’ cat, Trim, which the explorer had on board the Norfolk when he explored the Queensland coast in 1799.

Trim disappeared when Flinders was imprisoned on Mauritius in 1803, but his name lives on in Caloundra. This is just one of the interesting and exciting monthly tours organised by the Probus Club of Bribie Island, which meets on the first day of each month at the Bribie RSL. Club membership is open to men and women residing in the local area who may be looking for companionship in a friendly, relaxing atmosphere. In Australia, cervical cancer is in the top twenty causes of death, affecting many Australian women. This specific type of cancer affects thousands of women across the world and a survivor of the disease, Samantha Brown along with her daughter Gabriella, are heading to Nepal on April the 8th with the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation (ACCF) to help give back to the community. Sam first became aware of her cancer in 2009 and was fortunate enough to beat the disease. That, it self- proving to be an inspiration. Then in 2016, both Samantha and her daughter joined the ACCF by telling Sam’s story and becoming apart of the team, helping to raise awareness for cervical cancer. This year, Sam and Gabby set their minds to start fundraising for the clinic that is run in Nepal. Cervical cancer is the leading killer of women in developing countries, with over 270,000 deaths occurring in Nepal each year. If it wasn’t for the ACCF, the women of Nepal would not have the vital access to medical

services and processes such as screening, that help them immensely. Many women in Nepal walk for days to reach this clinic, to get vaccinations to prevent the disease.

This is a generational issue, with women in Nepal walking kilometres with their daughters to get them immunised against the deadly disease. These vaccinations in first world countries, specifically Australia, are given to girls in school to prevent this cancer, but for young girls in Nepal this preventative measure is not so easily accessible. While in Nepal these inspiring ladies will be helping to rebuild parts of the clinic severely affected by the 2015 Gorkha earthquake. This 8.5 magnitude earthquake caused devastating effects towards this clinic and the ACCF is now working on getting the full facility back to its original state. Samantha and Gabriella will also be trekking to various places such as Namache Bazaar, which is known as being ‘a highway to the Himalayas’.

Namache Bazaar is the furthest place a person can trek to without heading to the Everest base camp. They will also be trekking to Sir Edmund Hillary’s school of the clouds. The school was named after a famous expeditioner Sir Edmund Hillary, who helped the Sherpa people of Nepal.

He created the Himalayan Trust, which has helped and continues to help many schools and hospitals to be constructed in more remote regions of the Himalayas.

Both significant places will allow the ladies to gain a further cultural experience of Nepal. Samantha and Gabriella both have stated that they feel extremely privileged and honoured to be able to help and participate in such an outstanding cause.

These local Bribie Island mother and daughter are showing their dedication and emotion for such a noteworthy cause, proving to be inspirations that are helping the ACCF take a step forward for cervical cancer in both Australia and Nepal.

Birali Steiner School Ground Breaking Ceremony

On Tuesday, 10th April, Susan Lamb attended a Ground-Breaking Ceremony for the Birali Steiner School at Beachmere. As the school turned five on Friday 13 th April it has been a most welcomed and exciting time. While it has been wonderful to be sited at the back of the Beachmere Hall, the whole community is looking forward to moving to our permanent home later this year.

With full size classrooms we will be taking new enrolments. The school currently offers P-5, K-6 next year. Plans are underway for the High School. There are over 1000 Steiner/Waldorf Schools worldwide in more than 60 countries and 47 in Australia. The first Waldorf School was founded in Germany in 1919 and the movement turns 100 in 2019 with worldwide celebrations underway.

Geeks & Gadgets Book to Movie Adaptations

As with this most things in this universe, book to movie adaptations are rarely without fault. In fact, more often then not, they are considered (by those who have read – thus having a valid comparison too – the book) a disgrace to the text.

Some common prompts for dislike of an adaptation are: the addition or removal of characters, lack of characterization, removal or changing of plot points, flawed casting and many other discrepancies.

Some popular franchises have made these mistakes. For example, in The Hobbit Tauriel the elf was added into the film.

She was non-existent in the original series.

Her purpose – aside from acceleration of plot – was to avoid claims of sexism as, prior to her creation, there were no female characters worth noting in the series. Many other renowned franchises have committed these ‘crimes’, some of the most memorable

being: ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘The Maze Runner’. All edits were greeted with analysis and questioning. Some received positively, and others not as much.

However, book to movie adaptations aren’t all about the differences from the source material. The sub-genre has a multitude of highlights that keep the art form going.

Who doesn’t dream of their favourite book being brought to life. For every flaw in a movie, there could be five perfect elements.

Some widely acknowledged benefits that supply purpose for adapting are: the general excitement in seeing characters that people love, come to life on the big screen; high profit – everyone wants to see the film of a popular book; the films are easier to make when only adjusting is needed for the screen play; and many, many more reasons.

An example of an idolised adaptation is the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise. The film franchise is the second-highest grossing of all time, it hit $7.7 billion in the Summer of 2015. The series is a universally acknowledged success and is the epitome of why book to movie adaptations must never conclude.

Therefore, book to movie adaptations, while sometimes flawed, are a staple of the entertainment industry and shape the lives of both those who have and haven’t read the original material. Society needs them to survive. They say to give the people what they want. The people want more adaptations. They make society all the better.

Toxic Masculinity: forced Into Silence

(Viramontes Patty, 2016). Conforming to particular ideas and traits of what is considered ‘manly’ are labelled toxic as they detriment society. Toxic masculinity emphasises behavioural traits, including: dominance, violence, misogyny and covering up emotions. These behaviours harm society; particular traits encourage domestic abuse, violence and escalation in the severity of male mental health issues.

Passed from generation to generation, these traits are like family heirlooms. We teach boys that they must be tough. We teach boys they can’t be weak. We teach boys that it’s not okay to cry. Society’s constant reiteration of what makes a man is harming, not only society, but the male population.

Feminism channels focus on the oppression of women. However, gender stereotypes don’t solely encapsulate women; men too are trapped by certain ideals. Society has been indoctrinated to believe females and males act differently.

We have always been led to believe that men have to be tough and women, fragile; we raise generations on fairytales of chivalrous heroes saving damsels in distress. Our perception is erroneous.

In recent years some women have been liberated, allowing them to behave as they wish and engage in ‘masculine’ sports or activities. But what about men? Fighting for feminism often forgets men. Men are shackled by gender inequalities. While not as severe as the oppression women, they still face inequities, including: being encouraged into a culture of violence, prevented from being seen ‘girly’ and concealing emotions or otherwise being told to ‘man-up’.

The noxious culture we raise boys in, demands the masking of their fundamental human emotions. Toxic masculinity, compels males to feel unable to communicate about emotions, as it is seen cowardly. Ashamed to express their feelings, they are silenced, left alone as their problems build up. This causes additional stress and despondency, often leading to depression. As stated by BeyondBlue, going through a troubling experience alone increases the risk of developing depression (BeyondBlue, 2017). Everyone feels down from time to time, but suppressing feelings of sadness can expeditiously spiral into depression.

If men were permitted to discuss their emotions, before it all becomes too heavy burden too bear, they would reduce their risk of being afflicted by depression.

Stifling of emotions, spawned from toxic masculinity, needs to be abolished to prevent the development of depression.

In Man-Up, a mini documentary series, Gus Worland (the host) talks to a group of high school boys. One boy is asked the question of would he cry in front of his mates, to which he replied, “No, they would probably call me ‘sissy’.”

Furthermore toxic masculinity must be acknowledged as issue. If we leave males to drown in depression, without allowing them to seek respite by talking to someone, the immense suicide rates will maintain. The thought that crying defaces their masculinity needs to be vanquished.

All humans are emotional and all humans have the right to be able to express their emotions. The eradication of toxic masculinity beliefs is indispensable to liberate men and boys and prevent future generations from becoming victims of the patriarchy.

Why? Where in society did we get so confused that a boy, who needs support, is to be ridiculed?

The answer is toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity relates to the cultural perspective of masculinity and expectations of how men should behave

With the ever-increasing demand for television and movies, film-makers have long ago tapped into the infinite possibilities of book to movie film adaptations. The official definition of these adaptations being: “A film adaptation is the transfer of a written work, in whole or in part, to a feature film,” (Wikipedia, 2013).

The film acknowledged as the earliest official book to film is ‘Trilby and Little Billee’ (1896). There is no record of the cast or crew. The film is long lost and is said to have been a mere forty-five seconds of footage; it consisted of the protagonist consuming breakfast. Bringing authors’ creations to the big screen has since blossomed into an art form and an empire.

MICK’S PATCH To Bee or not to Bee Well its May already and with these beautiful cool mornings and warm days still the norm, it’s great to get some gardening done uninterrupted by any wet weather indeed! I mentioned last article, how some large retail hardware companies are phasing out some of their range of neonicotinoid insecticides at last due increased public awareness and the negative impact these chemicals can have on our bees and bird life accordingly. When you are out in the garden all day every day like I am working amongst my customers gardens, it’s amazing to see the variety of wild life that abounds some properties here on Bribie Island.

The lizards, dragonflies, butterflies, bird life and frogs to name a few, are a pleasure to witness no matter how labour intensive my work load is on the day, it’s just that miniscule silent reflection I sometimes get, if only for a minute that empowers me to soldier on and also reinforces my position to use and recommend environmental eco friendly options as a first cause of treatment wherever possible. This is why I have been raving on about the IPM philosophy (Integrated Pest Management) because it integrates some cultural control strategies that starts with soil health, having adequate moisture levels, incorporating compost and animal manures, using feeder mulches, and implementing strict hygiene practices which all give the plants the best start possible before reaching out for any chemical fertilisers, insecticides, or fungicides. Unfortunately, when the economic pest threshold is reached, then it all comes down ‘to BEE or not to BEE’, in the end. Chemicals verses the environment!

Commercial farmers are becoming switched on now and are embracing some of the available Bio control strategies using predatory insects as part of their pest management plan and are also using bulk pheromone traps in long ribbons stretched around their crops to distract the mating and subsequently egg laying capabilities of these problem pests. They are also releasing predatory mites, wasps, and lady beetles as part of their IPM management plan to whittle down pest pressure and also implementing specialist beneficial microbe brews that can be foliar fed or fertigated through irrigation and having huge successes with increased crop yields that has more nutrients and flavour with longer shelf life with the added bonus of reduced reliance on chemicals alone. You may have heard that some vegetables like Zucchini and pumpkins are just a couple of flowering plants that might need to be hand pollinated due to lack of bees in your area. I came across an article online from: (Deep Look. PBS) on Facebook, with an episode on the Bumble Bee in the United States and it shows how some flowers are designed to only release their pollen when the bumble bee buzzes its wings madly inside the flower causing the pollen to be released eventually. It’s fascinating stuff!

LANDSCAPE PLANT OF THE MONTH Banksia Integrifolia or Coastal Banksia

How about our lovely coastal banksia this month, walking around the various parts of the Island and couldn’t resist the photo. Sensational pale lemonyellow coloured flowers which are nectar rich bursting all over this specimen right now. Flowering is throughout Autumn and will continue throughout Winter and into Spring. Banksia Integrifolia are a tough salt tolerant tree, relatively fast growing but the tree trunk will eventually mature slowly into a gnarly multi branching magnificent characteristic old tree in time, anywhere from 5 metres to 25 metres tall in their natural habitat. The narrow - obovate, leathery dark green leaves are formed in a whorled formation and are silvery white underneath and tend to curve slightly upwards providing a prominent display especially during flowering. These old man banksias can reach 100 years old and tend to look after themselves. They can tolerate a range of soil types but slightly acidic, sandy to coastal heathlands preferred. The nectar is a favourite with Cockatoos.

Sustainable Gardening Welcome to our latest gardening articles written by a passionate local Horticulturist, for our equally passionate local gardening community, living on Bribie Island and Surrounding districts. In the last article, I mentioned how the beneficial insects play a very important role in nature by feasting on the various plagues of pests that can decimate our prized plants if let go unchecked, and I also explained how the tiny red and black lady bird ‘Cryptolaemus montrouzieri’ can devour mealy bug infestations in no time at all.

It can be really difficult when trying to control any pest invasion if you are not sure what insect or pest is causing harm to your beloved specimens, but thankfully, most of us these days are equipped with our smart phones and zooming in on unsuspecting insects now is relatively easy, but then the challenge begins to identify the culprit and determine also whether its friend or foe. There is a great new reference book titled, ‘Miniature Lives’ by Michelle Gleeson, it is an excellent publication for identifying Insects in your garden and is printed in Australia by CSIRO publishing, ‘Miniature Lives’ also has a handy visual reference section displaying images of some signature tell- tale signs of characteristic damage, inflicted to your plants and then cross references to show the likely identity of the culprit which is really useful indeed!

One of the most fundamental successful gardening practices you can do is follow a strict hygiene strategy when working in your patch. This can be simple as disinfecting your secateurs and other pruning equipment daily or simply washing down your lawn mower between cuts to minimise the spread of weed seeds. It’s also one of the reasons why I personally don’t like using wood chip mulch from the tip as it has the potential to contain all the pest, weeds, and diseases from all the problem plants in the district that has been discarded there. Seeds could still germinate, or diseases could possibly contaminate your plants or soil too. Over the last few years there has been quite a bit of bad press on some tree loppers down in the Gold Coast region regarding the stately date palm, ‘Phoenix canariensis’- that massive tall sentinel palm tree that adorns some prestige properties, either in a row of avenue plantings or stand-alone specimens. These date palms were infected by a fungus called (Fusarium Wilt), which has been spread from tree to tree by direct contact from contaminated, unsterilised pruning equipment. When the dead trees were replaced in this prestigious suburb, the cost for one mature Phoenix canariensis from the tree farm, is calculated at $1000per- metre of height, and with an average height of five metres tall, that equates to $5000 each to replace.

While on the subject of pest infestations, I was called out to consult on some Pandanus palm problems recently on Bribie Island and it seems the dreaded pandanus leaf hopper (Jamella australiae) has found its way here too. The infected Pandanus plants die back one branch at a time as a result from the infestation of sap sucking larvae which congregate under the leaf sheaths en- masse. Deputy LNP Leader and Shadow Treasurer Tim Mander said despite promises from Labor that water bills would not increase, south east Queenslanders are facing massive water price rises over the next three years.

The Queensland Competition Authority’s Final Report for SEQ bulk water prices has recommended SEQ residents pay on average $50 to $90 more for their water three to five times the rate of inflation.

“The Palaszczuk Government is lying to Queenslanders and is treating them like fools,” Mr Mander said.

Before the election Labor said: “There was no expectation that lower water consumption by SEQ consumers inevitably meant higher water bills.

The price impact from lower demand will largely be offset by continued cost savings.” http://statements.qld.gov.au/ Statement/2017/8/8/government-rulesout-extra-fixed-charges-for-seq-bulk-water “Labor knew this price hike was coming but buried its release until the middle of the Commonwealth Games,” Mr Mander said.

“On top of soaring power prices this is just a broken election promise by Annastacia Palaszczuk.”

Mr Mander said Labor’s legacy was almost a 400% increase in bulk water prices over 10 years.

“Queenslanders are still paying the price for Labor’s multi-billion dollar water grid fail that saw pipes built without dams and dams built without pipes,” he said.

“It’s the same old Labor – Queenslanders end up paying because of their incompetence and lack of proper planning.

“The LNP merged water entities saving Queenslanders almost $100 million and we also refinanced Labor’s debt saving Queenslanders money.”

BRIBIE’S GOT YOUR BACK MAY 2018 IS DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE MONTH We can’t stand by and let domestic violence continue!!!

The State Government and major media partners have launched a statewide advertising campaign to encourage more Queenslanders to stand up against domestic and family violence.

Minister for Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer said the campaign would include television, online, cinema and public space advertising to urge bystanders to help end violence.

“The attitudes that underpin violence in our communities need to change, and so does our attitude to speaking up,” Ms Farmer said.

“Every single one of us can play a role in helping victims and keeping Queenslanders safe from domestic and family violence.”

The campaign will use the hashtag #dosomething and is part of a $9.3 million commitment through the Department of Premier and Cabinet to help change attitudes and behaviours towards violence.

Ms Farmer praised major media outlets for backing the campaign and encouraging bystanders to speak up.

“These media outlets have put aside

their rivalry to stand together and “do something” to prevent violence.

“Having those outlets and well-known media identities embrace our new Bystander Campaign is a very big plus as we try to change the culture around violence.”

The Chair of the Domestic and Family Violence Taskforce, Channel Seven’s popular news reader, Kay McGrath OAM, encouraged her rival media colleagues to embrace the new advertising blitz during Domestic and family Violence month in May. Ms McGrath said media reported on the senseless deaths and told the human stories, so it is vital the media help shape the conversation about ending domestic and family violence.

“I’m proud and so pleased that my media friends and colleagues are coming together during May to add their powerful voices to this important issue.”

“We don’t want anyone to put themselves in harm’s way. Call police if you’re seriously concerned. In most DV deaths there are many bystanders who heard, saw or knew but didn’t call 000.”

“There are many things we can do. It can be as simple as asking a friend, are you ok? How can I help you? Or ask others around to support you in a non-violent way.”

“And if you don’t know what to do, read up about domestic violence and learn the signs and symptoms.

Domestic violence can take the form of emotional, financial and sexual abuse as well as physical.

“Check out websites, call DV Connect or 1800Respect and talk it through with an expert – you could save a life,” Ms McGrath said.

Domestic and Family Violence Taskforce member Darren Lockyer said “In footy terms, we call it the one percenters. There’s all these little one percenters we can do in our society to have real positive change.”

“I think if you know people and something might be happening in the household, it’s probably just sitting down with those people and saying why you think it’s wrong. This is not about being a dobber. It’s more about if we want to make a change collectively, we all have a part to play.”

NORWEGIAN PANCAKES

Heat 2 teaspoons butter over medium heat in a cast-iron or other heavy skillet. Add 1/3 cup of the batter and immediately tilt the skillet so that the batter spreads out evenly.

2/3 cup flour 1/4 teaspoon salt Stephanie Slinger age 6

3 large eggs 1 1/2 cups milk 1 tablespoon sugar or 1 tablespoon honey, plus more for serving

Combine the flour and salt in a medium bowl. Add the eggs, milk, and sugar, whisk until you have a light batter; make sure there are no lumps. Stir in the melted butter. Let rest for 30 minutes.

Cook for approximately 3 minutes, until the batter has set on top, then flip, using a spatula. Cook for 2 minutes, then transfer to a plate. Repeat, stacking the cooked pancakes, until you have used all the batter.

Serve the pancakes warm with berries and sugar, or cheese and ham.

In keeping with strategy commitments, the government has now released discussion papers that are the first step in reforming our trawl, east coast inshore and crab fisheries. At the same time, a management review discussion paper has been released for the coral reef line fishery that is also developing a harvest strategy.

New laws started on 16 April to clean up the towing industry

The Palaszczuk Government’s new legislation to clean up the towing industry and protect motorists from unscrupulous tow truck operators started on April 16.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the legislation came from recommendations made by the independent investigation into the removal of parked vehicles from private car parks.

“We appointed former District Court Judge Michael Forde to lead an investigation in response to community concern about alleged shady practices, intimidating tactics and excessive fees being charged by some towing operators,” Mr Bailey said.

“Mr Forde delivered 22 recommendations to overhaul the industry including changes to licence requirements, fees, signage, privacy, education and enforcement.

“The introduction of these new laws delivers on our commitment to put an end to rogue towing operations, leading the way in implementing harsher penalties for dodgy tow truck operators.

“From April 16 the maximum towing charge for a tow from private property is $250 and the maximum price that can be charged for on-site release of the vehicle is $150.

“We are also increasing the maximum penalty that can be imposed under the Tow Truck Regulation from 20 penalty units ($2523) to 80 penalty units ($10,092).”

Mr Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government had also taken steps to educate the community on how to protect themselves from dodgy operators.

“Information is now available on the Transport and Main Roads website to assist Queenslanders understand the changes,” he said.

“Signage guidelines and fact sheets for towing operators and drivers, motorists and property owners are all available.

“I encourage all Queensland motorists to visit my department’s website and read these materials to ensure you are protected against dodgy tow truck operators.

“Tow truck operators should also take a close look to make sure they are doing the right thing.

“I am confident this legislation appropriately balances the rights of private property owners and occupiers

and the rights of motorists, while ensuring towing practices are fair and reasonable.”

The changes that came into effect on April 16 include: • private property towing may only be performed in regulated areas by drivers and assistants who have the necessary certificates and are using licensed tow trucks • tow truck licensees must have towing consent evidencing an arrangement with the occupier to remove vehicles from the property and to notify the police as soon as practicable after removing a vehicle from private property

Bribie went down a goal early in the first half but fought back with a set piece goal to Amy O’Shaughnessy to level the score at half time. A hard fought second half saw the Beegees go in for another goal past a tired defence.

This spurred the Bribie Ladies into action and a period of intense pressure and skilful passing Hannah Bulley went in to score to level the scores. An entertaining game that again sees the Bribie team undefeated for the season.

MATCH REPORT - Bribie Tigers Senior Men vs Caloundra Bribie Tigers gained a well-earned point on Friday with a 2 all draw away at Caloundra. The two teams fought, not only their opponents but some windy conditions to keep the scores even at full-time. Our goals were scored by Ben Stone in the first half and Nathan Reynolds in the second; each time levelling the score against Caloundra. The Tigers after a nervous 15 played well and should have won the game - in the final minutes they hit the cross bar twice and the post once as they went for the winning goal.

CLEAN UP OUR ACT How is it that many of our sporting ‘male elite’ wind up in the headlines faced with varying allegations of social misbehaviour, breaches of conduct codes, alleged criminal activities or questionable intent?

Why is it that so many male sporting arenas remain the breeding ground for poor male behaviour? Why do we reward athletes with so much money and not re-direct at least 30% of these outrageous salaries back into grass-roots’ sport to help the 1000’s of mum’s and dads to manage good respectful behaviour on the paddock?

Let’s highlight the ridiculous cricket saga that ended in the suspension of our most senior cricket leader, Steve Smith.

It is unthinkable that an Australian Cricket Captain should ever reach the stage of being sacked and apologising on National TV for actions of which Steve Smith choose to adopt as a leader.

As the senior ambassador of the game and mentor to our budding boy and girl cricketers, it was a disgrace.

It’s laughable to hear that despite the announcement by the Australian Cricket Board Chairman of a pending ‘culture review into Australian Cricket, we are informed by the Chairman that he is “not going anywhere” and that his CEO is “safe.” It’s even more laughable when you hear that the new Australian Cricket Coach, Justin Langer will be charged to re-position the team cricket culture and get the ‘show back on the road.’

Don’t get me wrong, Justin Langer is the best person for the job – his morals, work ethic, spiritual strength and onfield experience is exemplary, however the culture and moral compass begins at board level. In smaller commercial entities, if a CEO had presided over the dismantling and sacking of the most senior leadership team, including coach, captain and vic-captain, this would have been balanced with the dismissal of a CEO by the Board. You either have your ‘hand on the wheel’ or ‘not.’ Either way, the CEO should have stepped aside to allow for a transparent investigation. The question will always remain, why did the

leadership of Cricket Australia and its’ entourage of professional on-tour paid supporters allow this debacle to occur?

A similar and more worrying example of questionable leadership surrounds the recent arrest of Ex-AFL Player, Coach, Mentor and dad, Mark ‘Bomber’ Thompson after being apparently charged with drug and trafficking offences. Of concern is the alleged reports of how much was known of Mark Thompson’s behaviours and actions whilst in senior leadership roles at the Geelong Football Club and at the Essendon Football Club. How do these men arrive in these situations?

It’s one thing to hear reports of questionable behaviours but it’s another to hear the barrage of reports from past leaders of their knowledge of a coach’s behaviour without perhaps the necessary intervention or support that would prevent the result. These are just two of many recent examples.

As a parent and friend of parents with competitive sporting children, I can only recall one event in 20 years when a junior soccer coach (Volunteer Dad) called a special meeting with parents and players to discuss player and parent behaviours ‘on and off’ the soccer field.

Surely the only way to teach children to make good life decisions is to provide education by experts as part of a competitive club environment. I call on the Federal Government and those codes that have the capacity to dish out these outrageous salaries to elite players to inject ‘real’ dollars into grass-roots education. I am sure that the disciples of Steve Biddulph would delight in presenting a two-hour session at clubs each year to assist kids in understanding the importance of TEAM, KINDNESS and CARE FOR EACHOTHER.’ Let’s clean up our act.

ANZAC DAY 2018

A message from Simone

Recently at Beachmere I launched the first of my petitions calling on the Government to improve road infrastructure in the electorate. The Beachmere Road is dangerous and in desperate need of an upgrade to the road’s shoulders to make it safe for all motorists. In a recent Question on Notice, I asked the Premier if she would promise to match the LNP’s commitment for vital safety upgrades on Beachmere Road. The Premier’s reply was disappointing - she said that “the Department of Transport and Main Roads will continue to monitor the performance of Beachmere Road and assess its priority for upgrading along with other roads on the state-controlled road network”. In other words this road is ‘not on our radar’. I will not let this go – it’s simply not good enough for the Government to fob off the people of Beachmere and their safety.

If you would like to put your voice behind this much needed upgrade, please take a little time to sign my petition. You will find petitions throughout Beachmere shops including the Newsagents, Chemist, Beach Shak Café and Bitss and Bobs.
