Greed and Gluttony yet again!

Earlier this week, I went along for my periodic hearing check-up as always trying to keep abreast of both my hearing loss and Tinnitus.

A nationally recognised provider makes regular visitations to the island in support of those that require their services, so that works well.

Testing was carried out and much to my surprise, I was advised there had been no change to the results from the previous testing of 2 years ago.

During questioning, I advised the audiologist of occasional annoying feed-back and how I seem to have been getting some wax build up more frequently. Her response was that the waxing may well be the cause of the feedback and that I should visit my doctor regularly to have the same seen to by them. (Yep, that sounds pretty logical to me) The conversation then moved on. I was advised I would be “entitled” to new hearing aids if I wanted them as I have had the current set for almost 5 years.

Hang on .... I really had to ask myself ... why?

The audiologist had just told me my hearing hadn’t changed. My current hearing aids had just been inspected and adjudged to be in excellent condition.

Almost seamlessly, I was then guided straight to a list of extras for review that could be added to those same new suggested replacement hearing aids that were now on offer as the replacements.

A nice new shiny magazine type brochure was placed face down on the table in front of me. On the rear cover were approximately 5 to 6 “extras” columns. Each column with

supposed improved benefit to the user from that of each previous column, and all with the price range of the supposed “extras / add-ons” varying between approximately $1300 and $6700.

I then asked the audiologist if there was any real benefit to be gained for me functionality to have new hearing aids. Her reply put simply was ‘they are 5 years old and technology does improve over time’.

Wait a minute, does this then mean the impending replacement and new hearing aids are deficient in functionality in some way?

Well perhaps no, not in so many words or at least that is what I was being led to believe!

So let’s put all this in perspective as I really do have two major problems here!

I really did appreciate being advised to look after my ears with the regular visitations to my own doctor.

Firstly, I have a real problem when it is “suggested” that I should change something for no apparent real benefit just because it is 5 years old. It really is quite simple and obvious to me that if everyone just keeps saying “ yes, I’ll have that” just because its shiny and new, sooner or later when someone really does need help for Federal support, there won’t be enough funds left in the coffers for anyone who really does need that genuine funding. And yes I know, the standard response will be, “that’s just today’s wasteful society” Secondly, I really dislike “being bent over a barrel” so to speak and pressed for what has been a traditional inclusion, to finance the “supposed” short falls of a replacement product that is being offered for sale, for my supposed health and well-being.

Electronics these days are pretty damn good!

What is obvious to me is there is no way there would be $1300 or $6700 worth of difference between two articles of electronics that have more or less been set up to do the same thing with neither being much bigger than the size of your figure nail ..... (and no, don’t try to point the figure towards R&D as it is irrelevant in this instance) At most there may be very slight differences with individual componentry.

More recently, hearing aids would simply have been connected up to a computer and have their individual program “tweaked” in order to achieve a tailored outcome for the particular individual. If you like something akin to the process of when you have your car placed on a dyno-tune so as to attain peak efficiencies. The fact is though, why are we now being sold something that used to be part of the process?

IMO and quite simply put, most are just seen as an easy target, another cash cow!

Hearing companies that take part in these practices should be utterly ashamed that they are putting the squeeze on people for these exorbitant amounts.

I was at a luncheon at Pacific Harbour Golf Club, and when I went to my car there was a big scratch along the side. There was a note on the car to say sorry, the note said it was scratched with a golf buggy there was a phone number to ring which I did and I was asked to get 2 quotes which I did. I received a cheque in the mail from this very good person and then I took my car to a body works company on the Island and when I received it back it was like a new car they had fixed up the damage but they also detailed it both outside and inside. It was just amazing!!! This I feel is a very good story. Lesley Parnaby.

Particularly delicious were the fresh oysters seasoned with strawberries, chilli and a touch of Tabasco sauce. The spiciness of the sauce and the chilli was perfectly balanced by the sweetness of the strawberries. Also on offer where fresh crab, prawns and parrot fish all cooked to perfection. Dessert was a freshly baked moist carrot cake topped with a thick layer of scrumptious cream cheese icing, sprinkled with crushed nuts and dried fruits, and served with ice-cream.

It has taken Noel and Delwyn Bergman two years of research and eight years to complete their fascinating history book, ‘The Passage of Time’. The book is a ‘snapshot in time’ of a group of people who all arrived together in similar circumstances and dispersed throughout not only Queensland but other states of Australia and even overseas. There is no doubt that German immigration is part of the fabric of Queensland.

Noel and Delwyn will be giving presentations of their book at Caboolture Library on May 25 and Bribie Island Library on August 24.

Vice-President of the Bribie Island RSL sub-branch Incorporated, and keen fisherman - Mr Hazelwood is calling out to other families who have veteran relatives buried in unmarked graves to come forward, in hope he can ensure the veterans receive the honour and respect they deserve with a headstone.

“If anyone has any relatives, whether it be a grandfather, uncle, dad or brother who is buried in an unmarked grave please get in contact with me and I’ll do all I can to help families find closure.

There must be lots of families as at the Lutwyche Cemetery I saw around 60 to 100 unmarked graves there alone,” he explained.

The process can take up to six month to complete.

ANZAC DAY SERVICES: Alongside Robert Hazelwood at Bribie RSL sub-branch Incorporated is Ed Wright – Honourable Secretary, who is organising the ANZAC Day services. “I’m looking forward to honouring the fallen, and catching up with old military mates and sharing good memories, at this year’s ANZAC day services” Ed said.

Churches on Bribie Island are busily preparing for Easter Friday and Easter Sunday services with larger than normal numbers expected than other services throughout the year.

“Easter and Christmas are our busiest times where we notice a larger number of visitors to church. In recent years, we’ve seen lots of families with young children coming to church,” Stephanie Ross – Senior Pastor of Bribie Christian Outreach Centre explained.

Those who attend Bribie Christian Outreach Centre this Easter will be presented with an Easter Production and Easter eggs for the kids.

“It’s all about families coming together and celebrating the Easter message which is like the ANZAC story. Most people pay respects for our ANZAC’s who gave up their lives for people they didn’t know so they may have freedom as did our Lord for each one of us,” Pastor Stephanie said.

The Service commences at: 9am on Friday and Sunday and goes for an hour.

“However, hot cross buns have been readily available in supermarkets and bakeries since mid-January, so understandably some people unfortunately overconsume. And I’ve even heard of children that are already bored with the buns as we’ve been popping them in school lunchboxes for weeks now. “ Overindulging is one issue but feeling guilty can be just as problematic. “Feelings of guilt can lead to food shaming behaviour and even binging. When choosing what to have, go for quality over quantity. My best tip is to ask family and friends to buy your favourite most cherished egg or bun and make time-out to really saviour it and enjoy it over the Easter weekend with the proviso that you don’t keep eating like that over time.

After Easter, it’s time to get back into your usual healthy routine. A good tip is to throw out or give away any surplus eggs to family and friends or even better don’t buy so many in the first place,” Lisa said.

While recent weather events have had us all concerned at the impact on our properties, it is pleasing to see the level of preparedness that residents took to ensure to minimize potential damage.

There is always going to be fallen trees, debris in drains, road damage when we face this kind of weather. If you notice that there is a tree, pothole, or damage to a Council building or asset, then please contact Council to report it on 3205 0555.

Council has started using a high performance bituminous pavement protection on our roads - SRS SealCoat, a safe, environmentally friendly material which is designed to extend the life of existing bituminous surfaces.

Road Surface Before and After

Asphalt and spray seal surfaces are under constant attack from sun, rain and hail. They all take their toll on our pavements and if we don’t protect them, the result is deterioration. Over time, the surface of our roads weaken and begin to shed particles as the binder becomes brittle and fails.

Consequences of this include the loss of larger stones, cracking, water penetration and accelerated failure.

For those of you with computer access or internet access on a mobile device, it is even easier to lodge requests.

The Moreton Bay Regional Council website has been designed to display on a range of different screen sizes and device types (smartphones and tablets) so you shouldn’t need to download a separate app to view information on this site.

The MBRC request app enables users to quickly and easily advise Council of road and footpath damage, tree or park maintenance, vandalism,

animal matters, overgrown properties, bin replacement requests and missed collections. Council has developed “native” applications for both the Android and iOS (Apple) operating systems.

For devices running other operating systems Council has developed a web-based application. While the functionality is similar, the native applications provide best support in areas where the device does not have sufficient internet access.

When you lodge the request in a few simple steps, there is GPS functionality to use your current location or manually enter the address. Once finalised, you will be given a reference number and be able to see when your request was actioned.

This technology won’t be for everyone, but might assist those who like to lodge requests ‘on the spot’.

Family and friends attended a Commissioning service held at Transformation Centre Bribie Island for Bribie Island Chaplains from State High and State Primary Schools, and for Religious Instruction facilitators from Bribie State Primary and Banksia Beach State Schools.

Community consultation, in the spirit of cooperation overshadowed negotiations earlier this month at a meeting between the Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) and the Bribie Island Yacht Club.

State Member for Pumicestone, Rick Williams (ALP), met with Moreton Bay Regional Council Division 1 Councillor, Brooke Savige, VMR Commodore Nathan Gundry, and Bribie Island Yacht Club representatives Doug Wilson and Malcolm Hollywood, making significant inroads into the relocation of the yacht club, Paddling Club, and Mayoral Outrigger Club houses. Key discussions were also held around the housing of 110 youth members of the Maritime Safety Military Cadets.

Once, perhaps twice per week, Australian women are bashed, harassed or murdered by their partners/husbands, who are free to do so……because they have been bailed from Court by unelected, activist magistrates and judges, who are practising therapeutic justice.

Then world in which these officials inhabit is not troubled by the brutal reality of the day to day struggle for existence by women who live alone and who try to raise children, work, have some kind of social life, and, who have ever present in their minds and souls the coiled spring of fear……’ will he come tonight? ‘, ‘will he find me here? ‘, ‘what will I do when he smashes the down the door? ‘, ‘will the Police make it in time?’. No Sir, these officials inhabit the land of small towers and balconies from which they can pronounce theirinterpretation of justice.

Long gone are the days of black letter law……assault means assault, murder means murder: this is now the age of therapeutic justice. Courts, not all of them by any means, but enough, are occupied by, unelected, and therefore not publicly responsible, magistrates and justices who

have assumed the mantle of community saviours. Perhaps out of necessity, who knows? But all social problems and various other tedious and troublesome matters can be dealt with by counselling, diversionary programs, undertakings by defence lawyers, usually publicly funded, and, a view that that they and they alone are the sole arbiters of the communities’ ills and injustices.

But I Can’t Because Of Chocolate….

There will always be a reason not to change.

Especially when it comes to the way you move and eat. I know I have said this before, but we hear the same excuses almost every day, sometimes several times a day, I can’t because “inset event here” is about to happen.

If you look hard enough you will always find an excuse to stop you from changing your lifestyle. You know, gatherings where you just “Have To eat a….” at the party, picnic, BBQ or Easter. Hey we aren’t superhuman, we both indulge at those times too, but we don’t spend three weeks before the event eating everything and anything because “What’s the point of starting now it’s Easter in three weeks”.

Three weeks, what can you change in three weeks? A habit takes 21 days to form, which amazingly is three weeks. We have had clients drop over 5kgs in three weeks. In three weeks you could increase your strength, lower your blood pressure and your cholesterol. Ok, then you may gain back a little weight during Easter but in those three weeks you will have learnt enough about how your body uses food and what makes you want what you want and this knowledge can make a huge difference to your choices when you do have an event where “anything goes”.

All our PT clients receive nutrition suggestions and every one of them has one day a week where “anything goes”. Having a day where you choose what you eat is important for so many reasons. Not only does it give you a chance to satisfy a craving but it also allows you to attend a social event and not worry about choices (or be picked on for not eating stupid amounts of crap food.

Which is an attitude, and pressure, from “friends” that I still don’t understand! Come on if they really are your friends they should be supporting your choices not hassling you!! SIGH!) Having this day off also gives our clients a chance to work out how to eat in a way that is healthy and social because, surprise! Social events do not need to be unhealthy events!

So just because Easter or Aunt Mildreds birthday is just around the corner, you can still start today to improve your health and happiness. We finish one of our 12 week challenges the week before Easter and I’m sure the 13 ladies who have completed this challenge will still enjoy Easter without going into a chocolate coma or a hot cross bun burnout, because whatever their “thing” was, I know that over the last 12 weeks they have learnt so much about how their bodies and minds work and this knowledge will help them to make good choices and still enjoy the event.

At the end of this challenge these 13 ladies would have lost a total of around 95kgs of bodyfat! Some as much as 13kgs, and an average loss of 7kgs, and they would have also discovered something about themselves, whether it’s how strong they really are both in physical and mental strength or how after a 12 week challenge your underwear is strangely baggy.

According to the dictionary and excuse is a reason or explanation given to justify a fault.

Once you know that, you must realise that if you are unhappy with your health or lifestyle then you must stop justifying why you are that way and start your change.

Senior Gentle Co-Ordination Exercises to Music Before You Start Find Your Favourite Music!

Always use a stable high backed chair, please wear at bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t ick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! on’t try these e ercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these e ercises.

Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each e ercise until you become used to e ercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new.

You may be comfortable only performing one of the e ercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more con dent and secure.

Let’s get started!

You may only be able to do one of the more challenging e ercises and then return to the lower impact version.

Please take each e ercise slowly and carefully.

Small changes can make a big difference.

Our service is designed to provide social support to those who choose to remain at home in the care of a loved one or on their own. We support guests from Monday to Thursday each week so that older members of our community can benefit from social activity such as Exercise classes, Trivia, Quizzes, Bingo, Indoor bowls & Golf, Picnics, BBQs and Concerts just to name a few.

We can transport guests to and from the Centre, provide support and assistance to participate that is appropriate to individual

need, assist with personal care and cater to specific dietary requirements.

Our group environment provides a comfortable atmosphere where activities and outings are developed with a person-centred approach. The staff provide support and reassurance to each of our guests.

Carers are not forgotten either with care plan consultation, support groups and one on one consulting as required.

Our team understands that some people with memory loss can be unwilling to leave the home without the support of their loved ones and so a planned transition too solo, regular attendance can be developed to suit the needs of the person with memory loss and their carer.

A $574,000 custom-made mobile library that will house more than 5,000 books, CDs and DVDs will hit the ground running next month after it rolled off the factory floor today at Narangba.

The modified 12m-long Isuzu truck is Moreton Bay Regional Council’s newest additions to its library service and will cater to residents across the region from Dayboro, Samford, Mt Glorious and Mt Nebo through to Toorbul, Donnybrook

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland and Lifestyle and Amenity Spokesperson, Councillor Matt Constance, today inspected the new library was fitted out by local Narangbabased business Varley. “The new mobile library will deliver a better experience for library customers with more than 5,000 items for loan together with a public access computer and print and copy services,” Mayor Sutherland said. “The specially-fitted truck has also been built with accessibility in in mind and includes a 350kg-capacity lift that can transport both wheelchair users from the ground to the mobile library.”

Cr Constance said the one-of-a-kind 10-wheeled truck took eight months to construct and was built locally by specialised vehicle outfitters Varley Group at Narangba. “I’m proud that council has been able build this new mobile library right here in our region,” Cr Constance said. “The Varley Group has a long history in the Narangba area and is well known for producing quality fit-outs for our emergency services, and this build is no different. To have been able to award this build to a local business in what was a competitive field, reflects the strong business acumen of our region.”

Cr Constance said the new mobile library would replace council’s existing library truck, which had been in service for more than two decades. “For over 20 years, council’s mobile library service has helped to provide valuable resources for residents in our region, and this new truck will help build on that success.”

AN OVERVIEW OF LOCAL MARKET PERFORMANCE The property market in the Caboolture area has been performing strongly over the past 12 months with most suburbs reporting median price growth. Listing numbers have dropped compared to this time last year and there are currently 8796 listings on the market across the region, with Caboolture having the most house listings with 685 houses on the market.

The REIQ is disappointed the RBA has chosen to lift interest rates today. It seems clear that the housing market in Queensland would benefit from low rates for some time to come and it’s premature to lift rates now.

Mindle Bygul Aboriginal Corporation (MBAC) has had the pleasure for the past two years of working with a mainstream organisation that supports our community members across the Moreton Bay Region that have children in care or at risk of having children in care and are also committed to working with families in the reunification process. Through this collaboration MBAC has been able to feel and see this organisation make dramatic changes in their community consultation and engagement processes and willingly embed community perspectives throughout their programming.

Due to the large catchment area, it is has been quite difficult for management and staff to establish working and community relationships that support our community members and therefore we have suggested to their working reference group that we may be able to put together a small directory for consultation and support where required.

The Australian Vintage Aviation Society (TAVAS) host their Great War Flying Display The skies over Caboolture airfield will be teaming with activity over the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd of April as The Australian Vintage Aviation Society (TAVAS) host their Great War Flying Display – a tribute to all Australians who have flown in conflict over the last 100 years.

Apart from just seeing aircraft from WW1, WW2, Korean and Vietnam wars fly, there will be many modern and vintage aircraft operating over the two days as well and plenty of activity on the ground for the whole family, between the display flying times. Plenty of food vendors and toilet facilities are provided.

This is an event for the entire family to enjoy, especially as entry for children under 16 is free. There will be plenty of activity in the air and on the ground. Other organisations will provide information and activities including face painting for the kids. Re-enactors from various periods will be on display and walking amongst the crowd adding to the period atmosphere of the day. You can sit in the cockpit of a jet fighter, or walk through an ex RAAF Caribou. The more adventurous may want try a joy flight in any of the ex military aircraft that will be available on the day.

Those who are interested in learning how to fly can speak to a flying school and may even take their first introductory flight!

The weekend event is unique in that it is the only time and the only place in Australia where you can see a collection of aircraft that spans more than a centenary of aviation development.

TAVAS own and operate the only collection of flying WWI type aircraft in Australia, including the only Fokker Triplane in this country, painted to represent the one that the Red Baron was shot down in. They also have the Fokker Eindecker, which is the very first true fighter aircraft of all time. There are only accurate flying reproductions of the type anywhere in the world.

The classic P-51 Mustang from Fighter Pilot Adventure Flights at Archerfield, will be operating joy flights for at least one day over the weekend.

2 seat aircraft where the pilot sits in the front and the rear seat person operates the twin machine guns to defend against aircraft attacking from behind. Australia’s 1 Squadron used them very successfully in the Middle East during WWI. The classic World War Two fighter aircraft, the P-51 Mustang, will also be flying over the weekend and demonstrating the huge advances in aircraft construction and performance in the relatively short time between the two major conflicts.

Interestingly, TAVAS also have aircraft from before World War One, including the only replica in the Southern Hemisphere

Bribie’s Oldest Building In Banya Street you can still see this building, which, since 28th January 1986, is the home of the Bribie Island Masonic Lodge.

There is a saying that everyone comes to Bribie from somewhere else and the same can be said of this building, brought here in 1929 to become the Bribie Methodist Church. According to a survey presented at the church anniversary 13 September 1987 the building was built some years before 1892.

It is believed the building started out as a church in Enoggera or Everton Park areas of

The block of land in Banya Street was purchased April 1924 from Mr. J. Ormiston and on the 11 September 1929 the Rev. Francis Chowns wrote on behalf of the Bribie Island Methodist Trust and offered £40 for the building.

The school building was dismantled at Narangba, carted by road to Beachmere whence it was carried by pontoon to Bribie by Mr. Ned Bishop of Toorbul.

Mr. R. Williams, a carpenter living on the island, rebuilt the church with the help of Voluntary labour from several church members.

A Picture Paints A Thousand Words! ‘no stopping him’. His face lit up like a ‘Christmas tree’, when asked by local photographer, Deb Neill, if it was okay to take his photo. ‘YES’ was Daryl’s immediate response. He was then asked if he would like to have the dog on his lap – ‘NO’ resounded loudly from the computer. When asked if he would like his carers in the photo the response was a definite ‘YES’ – indeed he did!

Written by Terry Fogarty Photographed by Deb Neill At the age of 21 Daryl McPherson had an enviable life, with a partner, a beautiful one year old daughter and steady employment.

He was happy and life was moving forward in a positive direction.

Then tragedy struck! Daryl was struck by a motor vehicle whilst crossing the road, at a designated crossing, here on Bribie Island.

After spending 12 months in a coma, he awoke to be diagnosed with an acquired brain injury, his family being advised to place him into an aged care facility. They refused!

Acquired Brain Injury or ’ABI’ refers to any damage to the brain that occurs after birth. Whether that damage is caused by an accident or trauma, a stroke, brain infection, alcohol or other drug abuse or by diseases of the brain such as Parkinson’s, with the prognosis for an ABI varying enormously.

Daryl’s accident left him unable to walk, incapable of using his arms or hands, powerless to speak and requiring assistance regarding bodily functions, as well as basic general care, such as feeding and drinking.

Darryl is clearly very happy about the thought that he can comunicte easily with Jim and Bianca

specifically designed gym workout.

Caboolture Pool and Fitness Centre offered the right facilities for this program including a hand and bike machine for disabled persons. This machine provides information pertaining to core and muscle strength and shows how the body is functioning throughout the workout. Daryl works Daryl’s transition back to the family home exclusively with personal trainer Corey, was gradual, taking it one day at a time. who is amazed at Daryl’s progress. “When As an outpatient, Daryl was required, on he started, he couldn’t hold anything. Daryl’s excitement and elation was palpable, spreading through those of us fortunate enough to share this life changing moment with him. Communication is a basic human right, empowering us to interact with the world around us. It is what allows us to have relationships and to express emotion. After not being able to communicate directly for 19 years, you can imagine that the simple joy of being able to converse, was intense and profound.

On Friday, 20th March, the ISLAND and Surrounds were invited to meet with Daryl and his carers, to record his first experience using the ‘Eye-gaze Edge’, an eye-operated communication and control system. By looking at the control keys or cells displayed on a screen, a user can generate speech either by typing a message or selecting pre-programmed phrases. The Eye-gaze’s camera tracks the person’s eye movements, which then moves the mouse on a computer screen. The user selects items, either by holding their eye-gaze for a period of time referred to as ‘dwell’, by blinking, or by clicking an external button.

This incredible and life-changing experience was short-lived. The Eye-gaze machine was only on loan for a few hours. The ‘Eyegaze communication control system’ costs between $26,000 and $30,000, making this unaffordable for Jim and Daryl. Jim, and Daryl’s wonderful carers have started a ‘Go Fund Me Campaign’ called communication device, james mcpherson - gofundme in an endeavour to raise funds to purchase this machine to enhance Daryl’s ability to communicate with those around him.

The machine was assembled on Daryl’s wheelchair to allow the computer to scan his pupils. After a few attempts Daryl understood the process and there was

Youth Voice Voice of Youth - Society is Controlling Who People Are Within today’s society, the different generations are having specific requirements forced upon them.

There are minimal expectations they are pressured to fulfil. I, as a modern millennium, am up to my clichéd eyeballs with crushing expectations.

Parents, guardians and educators are all wanting have ideas of what they want us to be, often disregarding the wishes of the individual. It’s suffocating to know that the opinions and wishes of others have the ability to influence yours so deeply. You could have a dream to be a psychiatrist. You could’ve spent your whole life wishing for it. However, when you announce you will study it at university, the negative words from family and friends who ‘think’ you ‘should’ be a surgeon, because you have the brains and grades to do it, crush those dreams.

Encouragement is good, but sometimes expectations tear shreds in the original dream, and shapes it into something grotesque.

There are usually good intentions behind expectations. Parents, family, friends and educators see your potential, and while

Youth Page it is a compliment on their behalf to see you as brilliant or genius, their good intentions become another layer of brutal, gruelling expectations that hammer you deeper into the ground. We need to let people learn their own lessons. They need to take messages from their mistakes to improve themselves. We need to let them take the journey, rather than enforcing our destinations on them. If everyone was heavily influenced by what was expected of them, would anyone be unique?

Would anyone be themselves? Would anyone be what they want to be?

What would be the result of people leaving people to be themselves? What would happen if people were left to their own accord, their own wit, themselves?

Maybe we would end up with a generation not plagued with self-doubt. A generation who aren’t regretting decision after decision they make. A generation who are true to themselves; not what other people want them to be.

Bribie Island State School Curriculum Kids ’ At the end of term 1, every student at Bribie Island State School was given the opportunity to meet with their teacher to discuss their progress. Supporting the Growth Mindset project at the school, students and teachers discussed reading. Conversations included topics such as; • Reading at home and school.

• Things students can do to improve their reading.

• Learning goals and how they are working towards achievement of these.

• Next steps in developing reading competencies.

• Celebrating success and effort.

Imagine a world where everyone is themselves. It would be a world where we allow people to be true to their personalities, wishes and goals. Now picture a world where everyone have become what OTHER people expected them to be. In this world, no one is truly happy, excited or living how they want to. Which world would you prefer? A world with countless successful corporate workers, or one with countless people being themselves?

We need to value the idea of a generation that doesn’t have a choice or an opinion about their own lives’ their own dreams; their own future. Instead of forcing people into what you want them to be try to simply let them be them. Let them take their own journey; to make the mistakes.

It’s their lives – not yours.

# # Geeks & Gadgets # # Using the Hashtag Any of you who are familiar with social media outlets, such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Tumblr, may have noticed the younger generations using a hashtag (#) before a word or phrase. For example, students may complain about their hatred of assignments, by finishing their anger filled post with #studentlyf (yes, lyf – not life). Someone may post about the latest Kylie Jenner fad and finish their post with #KylieJennerfan, or maybe one of your friends or family were one of the lucky one hundred and twenty thousand fans who got to see Adele live at the Gabba, and while bragging about it on FB, they ended their post with #voiceofanangel.

Now to those of you not in the know, this just looks like jumbled garbage at the end of a Facebook or Instagram.

Fear not, you are not alone, and indeed I myself (someone who prides herself on being social media literate) had no clue what this new fad called ‘hashtagging’ was all about at first. To be honest, I couldn’t even figure out how they were making the ‘hashtag’ text bold and leaving the rest a normal text font. Let me let you in on a little secret, all you have to do is start your ‘hashtag’ tag at the end of a post with a # and Facebook and Instagram bold it for you. I can’t tell you how clever I thought I was for figuring that one out pretty quickly. What I am ashamed to admit, is it took me several months to uncover the purpose of the elusive ‘hashtag’.

My apparently lack of social media literacy, meant that I had no idea that when you press on a hashtag, it takes you to a Facebook/Instagram stream, which includes EVERY post or photo that has used the EXACT same hashtag as the one you’ve pressed on. How did I discover this? A friend of mine was getting married and she told her guests to put #MrandMrsGiovani at the end of any post or photos we included of her special day. I of course, followed this rule, thinking it was a cute, quaint way for people to quickly note whose wedding it was. I couldn’t have been more wrong. When scrolling through my friends posts from the wedding, I accidentally clicked on the bolded ‘hashtag’ in one of the posts and it was in that moment that I made the discovery: HASHTAGS had a purpose.

When I clicked on it, I was taken to a page that had EVERY post and picture from the wedding in one feed. It was easily accessible and I could just scroll through the wedding posts all at once.

I’m not going to lie, this little discovery has changed my world (okay, my social media interactions at least). No longer do I have to scroll through thousands of unnecessary and irrelevant posts in search of the ones I wanted to find, now all I have to do is pop a ‘hashtag’ in my search or even easier, press on a bolded ‘hashtag’ and I’m directed straight to a feed that contains everything I’m looking for. Make the ‘hashtag’ part of your social media experience, by putting #bribieislandandsurrounds at the end of a post this week, to show off how hip and cool you are.

A Hairy Nose? An Itchy Butt”?

World Poetry Day 21st March was a lovely day to celebrate the rhyming word.

One book that I read recently to a little group of enthusiastic listeners -year 3s, adds a special message to the rhyme.

“Hairy Nose, Itchy Butt” by Elizabeth Frankel. Elizabeth created simply a great title to catch little ones’ attention in order to share an important message, and it is also very funny.

This award-winning children’s book talks about the loss of habitat for the hairy nose wombat, it explains the everincreasing loss of habitat for our native Australian animals and gives a very clear message of the need to protect our environment to preserve our native animals in a thoroughly entertaining

Easter Reading

So now we go to reading for fun over the holidays and the Easter period.

Here are a few choices I recommend.

As we focus on our Australian animals, why not read about an alternative to the Easter Bunny and supporting our own native Bilby who is still endangered in the wild. ‘The smallest Bilby and the Easter Tale” by Nette Hilton is a delightful story to share with little ones over Easter.

Anzac Day Reading April 25th is a time where we reflect on the role of others who courageously and unselfishly gave their lives in order for us to live the life we do. In order for children to appreciate this sacrifice and to understand their history, there are a few books I would recommend. Phil Cummings “Anzac Biscuits”, Meet the Anzacs by Clair Saxby and the iconic “ I was only nineteen” by John Schumann are borrowed frequently by students and teachers in our Primary school library.

SUSTAINABLE GARDENING SOILS AIN’T SOILS PT 9 Last issue we talked about the importance of implementing a recovery strategy to assist in rescuing our lawns and gardens from associated heat stress due to the effects of soil dehydration with the benefits of applying Humic or Fulvic acids after a night of rainfall to help buffer any chemicals and to assist to displace any excess salts that have become built up in the soil profile over time.

I also mentioned how the wonderful properties of these organic acids seem to work miracles in soils, especially our sandy soils here on Bribie Island. When these organic acids are combined with organic fertilisers like fish emulsion or composted cow manure and followed on with some applications of microbial brews such as Kelp or Worm teas, then we are truly practising sustainable gardening principles indeed. So that said, how do these organic acids actually provide the soil with these nurturing benefits? And how do they detox the soil? And where do they come from?

Organic Acids the Magic elixir of all Life.

Basically, Humic, Fulvic and Amino acids are chelating agents and the term chelate, pronounced key-late, is derived from a Greek word Chel, which translates,“to grab or hold on tightly to”, so when I mentioned in the last article about Humic acids being great to detoxify the soil, I was referring to the ability of these acids to lock onto heavy metals or toxins in the soil which in turn renders the soil less toxic, because the toxins can not be readily absorbed by the plant roots due to being diffused and as a result will be flushed through the soil profile with applied irrigation in due course.Hence why they are often referred to as buffing agents.

Interesting to note also, is that healthy soil teaming with micro-organisms do this naturally, as humus is the magic buffing agent in nature and these micro organisms release their own organic acids from the digestion process when breaking down organic matter, which is why the rainforest ecosystems flourish in their healthy natural state, with layer after layer of organic matter being recycled on the forest floor being constantly broken down by beneficial bacteria and fungi.

Humic and Fulvic acids are a by product from Brown coal and Brown coal is actually lignite, which contains between 60 to 70% Carbon in its original state, this is why I mentioned its usefulness, as the high carbon component of Humic and Fulvic acids ensure that they are excellent for revitalising all soils and when these acids are combined with organic matter or composted manures the soil is benefited by improved fertility, structure and improved moisture retention capabilities.

Which really is the magic recipe for building humus in the soil with micro-organisms.

So here’s hoping your soil has had a good flush with the onslaught of the storms and inspired you to revitalise your patch now with these cooler days fast approaching.

LANDSCAPING PLANT OF THE MONTH Radermachera sp.Kunming‘Summerscent’

Radermachera ‘Summerscent’ is a sensational small flowering tree growing 2 to 3 metres tall with a similar width and as the common marketing name suggests it profusely flowers throughout the summer months, with sporadic flowering from spring to autumn usually in the tropics.

The flowers come out in a light pink which fade to white and have a beautiful yellowish gold colour in the centre and have a nice fragrance too.

The foliage consists of glossy green pinnate leaves that resemble the majestic Radermachera ‘China Doll,’ to which it is related. ‘Summerscent’ is relatively pest and disease resistant, grows well in full sun or part shade and can be shaped to form a hedge. It grows well here on the coast and on Bribie Island. It is available from most nurseries Australia wide.

Four Seasons in Just Four Weeks!

Wow, it seemed as though we missed our FebruaryΩrains this year, but then some relief finally throughout March, with isolated storms delivering some welcome rainfall indeed, then the arrival of the tail end of cyclone Debbie bombarding the east coast with wide spread flooding north and south of us.

Now with day time temps a little cooler, its finally feeling like Autumn these last few days and it certainly does feel like we have been through 4 seasons in 4 weeks. Our hearts and prayers go out to all who were impacted by this latest massive deluge from mother nature and for the rest of us that came out relatively unscathed from the extreme elements thrust our way, it seems only natural that we feel a sense of gratitude as we thank our lucky stars in appreciation for our wonderful life our health and knowing that our families, friends and pets are safe too.

Mean while, our roofs might still be intact around Bribie Island and surrounding districts but I have noticed a few a trees down and it seems my own Frangipani paudica, the evergreen Frangipani, with the soft multiple canes was one species that was torn and uprooted entirely, I guess because of its softer tissue, large leaf mass and relatively compact small root system.The great news is, like our folk who have endured storm after storm up in the monsoon areas, the Frangipani are resilient buggers too, so no problems cutting them back and transplanting them now, as there is still time to get them re- established back into the landscape. You can also pot up the dried cane cuttings and create some more plants to plant out next spring.

Autumn is a great time to think about adding some blood and bone or composted cow manure to our gardens while there is still a little moisture in the soil profile. Then cover the lot with a thin veil of sugar cane or Lucerne mulch to really give your gardens a slow durable feed throughout the cooler months now approaching.

I also like to apply some diluted fish emulsion all over my blanket of sugar cane mulch to really compliment my soil building strategy. If you were thinking of making some compost this year why not get a head start today and build a compost heap in your patch and start creating a beautiful friable compost to add to your gardens ready for next spring?

The lawns are finally growing and its great to see some bright green swards around again, but the weeds are powering along also, so its a good time to initiate a plan to control the weeds while the soil is still relatively moist. Also the recent rainfall has contributed to another foliage flush on most citrus trees and if you had leaf minor problems previously, chances are the buggers will pounce on that new growth too, so the trick is to spray a botanical oil regularly, mixed with kelp and fish emulsion to really feed your tree with out compromising your fruit set, as the fruits are our main focus, most citrus fruit should already be developing well now, so I try and steer clear of all insecticides if possible while I have fruits on my trees, as my aim is to harvest chemical free home grown produce which is far more tasty and nutritious. Kevin and Meryl Cousins moved from Victoria to Bribie Island seven years ago, after stumbling across Bribie Island during a visit with their daughter in Burpengary, which resulted in them purchasing a property here on our beautiful Bribie Island. Returning to Victoria, Kevin sold his accounting business and within a couple of months he and Meryl were living on this picturesque Island. “We love it here, the weather is wonderful, the people are great and there’s lots to do”, said Kevin.

Over the past four years Kevin has travelled to Adelaide for the ‘Tour Down Under’, where social riders are only allowed to participate in the course event for one day only. On the other days, social riders are permitted to ride from their accommodation to the events commencement point for the start of the race, then follow on from there.

When Kevin first arrived, he became hooked on the Bribie Triathlon, which is a four-race series held between November and March each year.

This year there were over a thousand competitors in each event. “The cycling is definitely the best leg for me I struggle a bit with the swimming and running but I love it. It’s very competitive and lots of fun”, said Kevin.

In his younger days, early 40’s that is, Kevin use to run marathons but he worried about the damage he might do to his joints, so he started cycling.

As a member of Rotary in Victoria, he attended a number of 700 km rides for charity, called the ‘Ride to Conference’, where they cycle for a week and finish with a conference. Kevin has also cycled in ‘Bicycles Queensland’ 600km to 700km social event ‘The Great Old Bike Ride’.

Contact details were exchanged and Kevin is thrilled to announce that the group has room for him to join them in France. “I couldn’t believe it! It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to follow the Tour de France but I never thought I would get the opportunity”, said Kevin.

The oldest competitor to complete the Tour de France is Henri “le Père” Paret.

In 1904, the 50 year old finished in 26th place.

This is the first time a Bribie resident has joined a group of riders following the Tour de France. I wonder if Kevin Cousins will go down in history as the oldest social rider to participate in the Tour de France?

With 22 riders involved and the average age being 45, at 74 years of old Kevin will be the oldest rider in the group.

“No-one has asked me how old I am so I guess I really just have to keep up with the group” said Kevin.

So, if you see Kevin riding Mount Mee over the coming months please cheer him on. I know that the team at the ISLAND and Surrounds will be waiting for the blow by blow account of the race when Kevin returns.

The Tour de France is considered the most challenging cycling race in the world. This year’s event starts with the first-time trial in Düsseldorf and travels through France finishing in Marseille.

The course of the 104th Tour de France (1–23 July 2017), stands out for its atypical mountain stages. Although there will be fewer climbs than usual, their steeper gradients will separate the men from the boys.

I asked Kevin how he would train for these mountain passes and he said Mount Mee offers 4kms with a gradient of 10 to 15%. He knows he will have to do numerous runs at Mount Mee each day to be strong enough for the slopes in France.

The Group will be crisscrossing the tour across France and they will be at the finish of several stages throughout the Tour de France, including the Alpe d’Huez, which is a critical part of the race. They will spend eight days in the Pyrenees, five days in Provence and finish in Lyon.

You can even go bream fishing with a handline which can be great for the kids or day trippers who have limited room or who travel by bus or train to their destination. Bream fishing is seasonal however there are always some around to be caught, some fishos prefer to hunt

Well the weather has not been kind to us over the past few weeks and heading into Easter we are still going to be facing showers. Not to many anglers out and about fishing and crabbing but we have managed to get a few reports. The usual bream and Whiting at Red Beach, Skirmish Point, White Patch and the Avon Wrecks. There are a lot of mud and sand crabs about with all the fresh water washing them into the passage. The boys catching 30 to 60 sand crabs each time they venture out at Bongaree. Mud crabs are also about Ningi Creek and Lime Pocket so why not get out there and catch a feed of crabs. When the weather is good the boys have been getting out at the Bird Cage and they have been hooking on Tuna and Mackeral. The Flathead are also on the bite in Ningi Creek, White Patch and on the Surfside near 1st Lagoon. There catching some good size Dart and Whiting on the surfside near the camp grounds. The Banksia Beach Canals are also proving to be a good place to fish with good size bream and Mangrove Jack being caught throughout the canals. With the school holidays upon us it is a great time to venture out with the kids and look around Bribie Island for that great fishing spot. If we are going to venture up the beach in our 4wd make sure we have stopped into to Gateway Bait and Tackle to pick up your vehicle access permit from our friendly team. If you don’t get a permit be sure that the rangers will be out and about and ready to hand you a fine. We must also remember that there is NO DOGS allowed in our vehicles up the beach it is an automatic fine. There are beaches on Bribie Island that you can take your dog on they are Red Beach, Banksia Beach, and the 8th avenue car park at Woorim.

Bream are one of the easiest bread and butter species to catch in our area. It does not matter how old or young you are, Bream is a fish for everyone. You just have to know what they are biting on and where to look for them.

When Bream Fishing with bait I prefer a 7’-9’ rod which is reasonably whippy at the tip and I team that up with 2500 series reel with 4-6lb braid or 5” Alvey with an 8-12lb mono line. Reels and rods are ultimately up to the angler, any gear used for Whiting or Flathead will do the job.

Bream will take most baits presented to them for Dough mix, Pillies, Prawns, Whitebait, Pipis, Worms, Yabbies or my favorite two – Mullet gut with the onion and Mullet Fillet. The bait you use for the estuary areas can differ slightly for the open water areas. I prefer to use strip bait of either Mullet, Herring , hardy Head or even Yellowtail Pike. Team this up with a 6-12lb leader and a small sinker (“0” “00” or “1”) which is just enough to get the bait down and presenting a natural food source.
