I have noticed a lot of talk on the local social media sites recently about our local infrastucture and the lack of it, or more specifically the debate has been our roads and even more specifically the Bribie Island Bridge.

There are a number of views on this based on what side of the Pumistone Passage you reside on. Residents living on the “Mainlanders” side generally say we need the roads leading to and from the “Bridge” should be a priority. On the flip side the Islanders are saying the “Bridge” cannot handle the current traffic and should be a priority.

The social media debates introduce other notable arguments, one being that the “Reserve” is a priority and the need keeping Bribie an exclusive Eco Tourism destination. Others on the Island are concerned that should there be medical emergencies when the bridge is grid locked because of traffic is the major issue.

There are also questions being asked as to who is responsable for funding such an enormous upgrade? Is it a federal or local goverment resposability? What is the current status quo based on the fact that 2038 is the Bridges structural deadline....What are your views on this?

Beachmere Road A longterm SAGA In 1983, the National Party said, “Vote for me and we’ll fix the Beachmere Road”.

After 6 years, nothing had been done!

In 1989, Labor were in power and again no work had been completed on Beachmere Road.

In 1992, the National Party again vied for our vote with a promise to again fix the road! They didn’t get voted in, but still Labor’s tenure from 1992 to 1998 only brought a widening of the King John Bridge, and a repair of the road from there up to Monty’s near the first river bend.

In 1998 Pauline Hanson’s party got in and still no further work was done.

Labor again held tenure from 2001 to 2013. In 2008, they made a repair of the road from King John Bridge to Beachmere.

In 2008/2009 after reconstruction of Newman Road to James Road, Carryn Sullivan announced $6.1M in funding from the State Government for roadworks and she spent $2.1M of that allocation to realign the T-junction at Hickey Road.

The remaining $4M was destined for reconstruction of the rest of the road, but that $4M went ‘missing’. The road itself has been surveyed extensively over the years and clearly reconstruction not repair, is required.

Lisa France couldn’t explain where the money went and nor could Rick Williams.

If Rick Williams wants to get voted back in, perhaps he could consider completing the long-awaited and much needed reconstruction to this road rather than just make empty promises! As you can see, it’s been a long time coming.

I have noticed the change in all my cadets, my youngest daughter was shy and didn’t have any confidence, now she is a peer worker with the primary school and often will be heard speaking up in their lessons or yelling when doing drill, something she wouldn’t have normally done. My eldest daughter was the first girl Army cadet to join and I have seen a huge change in her as well, she loves cadets and has hopes of joining the Army this year.

Some of the training and lesson they teach are First Aid, survival, sailing, bush tactics, all the lingo for army or navy, respect, mateship and loyalty. They also hold Sailing Days, Field Days, Camps etc. where both Navy and Army attend.

I am writing to you in hopes that you might be able to run a story in your papers on the amazing work Maritime Safety Military Cadets Bribie Island does. This organisation started out 3 years ago on 9th May after the founders realised that Bribie needed something for the kids aged 10-18 yrs old to do on a Friday night so they wouldn’t get themselves in to trouble being bored.

The Commanding Officers are all fully trained and have been instructing cadets for numerous years here and in other locations. They meet at the Lions Hall on Sunderland Drive, Bellara on a Friday night from 6:30-9:30pm.

At this time they form up on parade and raise the Australian Flag, followed by instructions for the night. They then will break up into Army and Navy and have lessons, training or drill and at times they will complete these as a full unit.

Dinner is provided for a small fee of $5 per cadet which is made on site by the lovely galley staff.

MSMC attend and help out at a lot of community events such as Camp Quality Christmas Party, Clean up Australia Day, Remembrance Day, Vietnam Vets Day, The Lions Club Events, Anzac Day as well as being involved in the production of Voices Coral Groups ‘Toast is Anzac, Gentlemen’ performance, just to name a few.

MSMC isn’t affiliated with the Australian Defence Force so isn’t government funded and all money is raised by the staff and cadets for equipment needed and with the help of donations from the community.

I write this to you as a parent of 3 cadets, my son was getting in trouble multiple times

I have attached some photos showing some of our cadets at Anzac Day this year where they attended and held guard at the dawn service and 8am service at Toorbul and 11:30 service at Donnybrook, this was our second year of attendance here and we have been asked to return next year as well. The cadets come from the local area such as on Bribie but some travel as far as from Burpengary and Narangba as they enjoy it so much.

Currently we are based at the Lions Club Community Hall and they have been amazing to let us use this and so generous but we are looking for our own place to call home permanently, somewhere to house our equipment and to make it our own. We have numerous sail boats, rigging, weapons etc. that we would all like to be in one convenient place.

Some thoughts for anzac day : 2017 By : Major Harvey Fewings [ Rtd ], RNZIR, Aust Int Corps, RRAA. We come to these memorial places, once every year to honour the sacrifices, and to preserve the stories, of those Australian men and women who gave their lives on active service for our country, Australia.

It is a long and magnificent story – commencing on this day, in 1915 When thousands of young Australian men charged up the cliffs of Gallipoli, and into our nation’s history.

I quote the author, Les Carlyon, when he said, “ there were so many of them, over 300,000 in all. But, we never saw them, we never knew them when they were doing the things that made them different from you and me. “ That generation of mainly soldiers and nurses, brought back to Australia the values we now hold to be true for us : •Mateship.

•Courage in adversity.

•Healthy disapproval for pomposity, in all its forms.

•And………………

•A wonderful ability to laugh at ourselves The next generation of Australians, in the 1940’s, recognized the evil they faced.

And they fought it !

And they won !

And, all of us, the living and the yet to be born, must be eternally grateful………. I quote “ Citizen Soldiers “ by Stephen Ambrose.

For our systems of Government,

the great institutions of our nation, Justice, Health, Education and the fabulous wealth from our agriculture and mining ; would not belong to us if that generation of Australians had not prevailed. We owe them.

Subsequent generations, of Australian men and women, in Korea, Malaysia, Borneo and South Vietnam displayed that same courage and commitment for our National safety and well being.

Bongaree Dog Beach Bribie Island Residents would like to see Dog Friendly Beaches along the passage of Bribie Island.

Many dog owner residents of Bribie Island and surrounding areas have signed a petition in favour of dog friendly beaches along the passage that would be very accessible to all dog owners, including elderly and disabled people between the hours of 7.00pm each night through to 8.00pm each morning.

Residents said, “they would love to give their dogs a quick swim during the hotter months.” They believe the times requested would have practically no impact on beach goers. In fact, this activity would have far less of an impact on the beach or surrounding areas than the hundreds of people who visit the foreshores each weekend and who don’t necessarily respect these areas by way of removing their unsolicited rubbish.

Dog owner residents are saying “Red Beach or Woorim are not necessarily accessible or a safe option for most people mid-week for many reasons and are not an option or appropriate, especially for the elderly and people with limited mobility of the community.”

A meeting was held with Cr Brooke Savige at Bongaree Jetty on the 28th of April with dog owners to discuss the request.

Cr Savige listened to their reasons and advised residents she was happy to table the petition at the next council meeting and submit the signed petitions. Cr Savige advised residents “A Community consultation will first have to take place before it can be considered and passed through Council” ISLAND and Surrounds believe that Cr Savige has now presented the Petition to MBRC for their consideration.

This week is National Volunteer Week (8-14 May), organisations and community groups across the Moreton Bay Region are being encouraged to say a big ‘thank-you’ to the thousands of volunteers dedicating countless hours each year to bettering their communities.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said National Volunteer Week was a great opportunity for community groups, organisations and clubs to express their appreciation for their volunteers, and to encourage others to get involved.

“Hundreds of community groups and organisations across the Moreton Bay Region, including council, couldn’t provide critical support services in our communities without the support of their passionate and committed volunteers,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“From helping out in schools, to nonfor-profit community organisations, sporting clubs, hospitals, and aged care services, to assisting the community in times of need through the State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service or Surf Lifesaving Queensland, volunteers are a vital part of our communities.

“Moreton Bay Regional Council has a wonderful team of more than 1,400 volunteers whose tireless commitment and hard work ensures community events, programs and facilities run smoothly.

“Just last year, council volunteers collectively gave up more than 84,000 hours of their time to community events, libraries, art galleries, community services and tourist information sessions, which is just incredible.

“This National Volunteer Week council will be saying ‘thank you’ to our tremendous volunteers, including hosting a special screening of the Oscarnominated film ‘Jackie’ at the Redcliffe Cultural Centre to recognise our tourism, events and cultural centre volunteers - some of whom have volunteered for more than 20 years!

SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS In an effort to create a safer environment, a reduced speed zone of 40kph outside the Beach Shak in Biggs Avenue, Beachmere has been approved (as marked on the map). Threshold pavement markings will also be installed and these type of markings are used when there is a change in zoned speed and assists to inform road users they are entering a speed control zone.

This new line marking is expected to be completed by the end of May (weather dependent). See below depicting proposed works.

Cleaning Up Graffiti

One of the most disappointing acts of vandalism I think is Graffiti, such a senseless act which costs Council time and money to repair if it is on Council’s assets.

RAMP UP

Students and families are invited to attend the free RAMP UP Scooter Beginner Session, Saturday 27 May, 10am-12pm, Beachmere Skate Park, cnr Moreton Terrace and First Avenue, Beachmere.

RAMP UP is a free skateboard and scooter group coaching program delivered by the Moreton Bay Regional Council AND program is suitable for participants 5 to 15 years old and each session includes basic riding skills and trick coaching. Participants will also learn skate park etiquette to ensure they have a great experience every time they ride the park.

Council will remove graffiti from any council owned land or council assets which may include: buildings, fences, walls, artworks, poles, bins, parks, park shelters, park signs, bus stops, foreshore areas, or skate parks.

If you have graffiti on your private property I encourage you to obtain a free removal kit from council’s customer service centres to remove the graffiti.

If you witness anyone in the ‘act’ of performing graffiti, please report it to the Police station so that steps can be taken to catch the perpetrator.

CHAPPY WEEK On a brighter note, Chappy week (SU QLD Chaplains) is from the 14 to 21 May and local schools and communities will be hosting special events to raise awareness of the value of school chaplains and importantly raise funds to support school chaplains to continue the great work they do.

For those of you who may not have school age children, the Chaplains provide spiritual, emotional and practical support to school communities. They assist students in finding a better way to deal with issues like family breakdown, loneliness, drug abuse, stress and anxiety. Sometimes by doing nothing more than listening and encouraging, they can turn a student’s life around. I have witnessed firsthand the benefits to our local children when I was teaching.

Why is it so, that some humans believe that sharks are more important than humans ?

Cranky Lizard respects all life, in whatever form it comes, but believes, with resolute purpose, that human life is sacred.

Carcharodon carcharicas …the Great White Shark has instinctive in its DNA, a program to hunt seals ; and that is what it seemed to be doing when it speared out of the surf at the Kelp Beds in Western Australia last week and ripped a beautiful, young girl’s left leg off at the thigh. She was surfing with her father, she died in the arms of her mother and in the hands of the paramedics.

Who could do anything ? Her left leg gone from the thigh – shock, blood loss took care of the rest.

That is the way it goes, say many people, including Senator Peter Whish-Wilson from Tasmania, who also expressed his sadness to the family of this young woman and who also Chairs the Australian Senate Environmental Committee into Shark Mitigation [ whatever that bloody means ?? ]. Sharks live in the ocean……..don’t want a shark bite ? Don’t go in the ocean !!

That is the view of academics, Green Senators and other environmental activists ; but it is not a universal view.

Nobody, nobody on Earth knows how many great white sharks there are in our oceans; or where they are ; or where they go to !!

Cranky Lizard Speaks Nobody.

Nobody knows whether their numbers are rising or falling.

But there are some facts we can use to ponder this. Female great white sharks reach sexual maturity at ages of about 17 years old, so we can say that this current crop of great white sharks were all born in about the last 17 years. But, these creatures were listed as protected in 1999 – so has their population exploded in 17 years ?

No. Of course not ! They were probably never threatened, as a species, in the first place, and they were always there !!

But there was plenty of political mileage to be had in the great white shark protection programmes…………..greenies, academics, you name them, you know who they are !

Professional fishermen, people who deal with these lethal creatures almost every day, have always expressed a view that there were always plenty of great white sharks about, but their views were dismissed out of academic arrogance by the academics and other fish experts in Government departments – who conduct research programmes in publicly funded boats and dare Cranky Lizard say it ? “ Could they really declare that they have solved the problem ? No, of course not, because there goes the public Would you simply continue with your day, without another thought?

If you happen to find an injured kangaroo or wallaby, it is very important to approach it safely, as it can often be frightened or distressed and may react aggressively.

Make sure you check the pouch – joeys have been known to survive in the mother’s pouch following her death for several days.

Do not remove the joey from the mother’s teat as irreparable damage can be done to the joey’s mouth if removed from the teat incorrectly. If at all possible, take the mother and joey to the nearest vet or call your local wildlife organisation for assistance.

funding and there goes their jobs.” So there it is…………..great white sharks are threatened and must be protected.

But. There are some pesky inconvenient facts that just won’t go away. At beaches which are protected by nets and drum lines in Queensland and New South Wales, there has been one, yes one, fatal shark attack since the nets and lines were deployed in 1936/37. That is all, just one.

And those figures exclude Sydney Harbour where there are no nets or drum lines.

Some other factors to think about…. the whales are back in huge numbers, roaming up and down our East Coast, and, of course they, the whales, attract sharks, great white sharks in large numbers simply because the whales are food !

In Queensland, whales get caught in the shark nets, but we get them out, much to the delight of the television news and life goes on…….still no shark attacks.

The combination of more whales close to the Eastern Coastline of Australia coupled with a large increase in the numbers of humans who go in the ocean, and we sell our international tourist programmes on that basis ; golden beaches, surf, surf life savers and so on ; it is inevitable that more shark attacks will occur. Common sense tells you that. Common sense also tells you that drum lines and nets protect humans from shark attacks and have been doing so since 1936/37.

Cranky Lizard must say that as an Underwater Rescue Diver and an ex Surf Lifesaver, great, white sharks and Cranky Lizard have met in the deep blue waters of the Southern Ocean off South Australia ; and, when they are heading towards you and circling you in your diving gear……it is personal folks, it is personal. They look at you as you look back at them and there is no good will at all – it wanted to eat me and I wanted to kill it ! Both of us survived the encounter intact.

Human life is more precious than sharks ; deploy the nets and the drum lines ; make our beaches safer places for all of us and the let the academics have meetings all day with Senators of all colours, paid for by us as taxpayers ; Cranky Lizard accepts and respects that these people act out of good will and respect for our environment.

There is nothing wrong with that.

And, in Ballina, Northern New South Wales, where shark attacks began to threaten the local, tourist economy of the region, shark nets were finally deployed at popular surfing beaches……no shark attacks since the drum lines were deployed. !! Anyone surprised ?

But should the day ever come when we place human life less sacred or less important than it is, in our community: then that is day when we, as homo sapiens head back towards the caves and our Neanderthal ancestors.

Wildlife carers must be licensed and trained, as it’s illegal to care for native wildlife if you do not have a permit.

Scout movement start up at the Beachmere State School

It was great to see the scout movement start up at the Beachmere State School.

This is a great opportunity for our youth to be involved in an extraordinary variety of traditional scouting skills, such as camping and bushcraft through to more extreme challenges such as abseiling and canoeing. I attended to deliver them a donation to help get them started. It’s held at 3pm each Wednesday.

Strengthening The Culture of Care; Engaging Bystanders to Make a Difference Australian schools have some of the worst bullying rates in the world. 1 in 4 of our students are bullied every day, 43% of our students are bullied online and 53% of Australian kids admit to isolating and dehumanizing other kids online. I am passionately engaged in trying to turn around our ‘cultural acceptance’ of bullying and harm.

I am Rachel Downie and I created stymie.com.au, Australia’s only anonymous bullying and harm alert system for use in schools. I have been an educator for 20 years and have only recently left my school to run Stymie full-time.

youth, treat each other with a lack of respect, compassion and care. In our classrooms and in our homes, bullying is spiraling out of control. I actually had year 8 students tell me last week that the reason why they don’t stand up

and say something, is because they feel ashamed about doing the right thing; the peer pressure our children are facing is insurmountable.

When I learned that in my community, two of our beautiful young people had taken their lives because they had been bullied beyond hope, I felt compelled to do something. I resigned from full-time teaching and pooled all my resources into building Stymie.

How Does Stymie Work?

Bystanders are encouraged to make notifications about someone who they believe is experiencing harm. They make the notification anonymously through our site (stymie.com.au) and it is passed on to the student’s school. The notifications can also have screen shots attached to them of inappropriate social media posts or harmful texts. Stymie is not privy to the content of any of the messages; that data is specifically for the schools only.

The school then confidentially approaches the student who is experiencing distress and they work together through the most appropriate wellbeing process. The important thing about this process is that this first conversation, lets the student know that they are not alone and that is empowering stuff.

Students are reporting everything from illegal activity like the selling of drugs to self-harm, suicide ideations and other types of harm to their school communities and school individuals.

Stymie has been running nationally for five years and we have Principals contact us regularly to share how Stymie is making a difference in their school.

Our young people are counting on us to change the ‘cultural acceptance’ of bullying. Stymie is my way of harnessing help for our kids and providing a solution for school communities. Working together and allowing bystanders to

make anonymous notifications, is promoting social responsibility and kids who are targets of harmful action now know that they are not alone.

I presented a new defibrillator machine to our SES volunteers, who are front line workers after storms, facing stressful conditions helping residents.

Donnybrook’s community turned out in force to commemorate our ANZACs. The Maritime Safety Military Cadets mounted the catafalque party. I was honoured to deliver the Ode, on behalf of those who have fallen to give us our freedom.

Humourous Speech Contestt Bribie Toastmaster Cathy McGillivray competed in Chinchilla on Sunday the 30th of March at the Toastmasters International Division 69 Conference in the Humorous Speech finals. With the best of the best competitors from Northern NSW, Papua New Guinea, Queensland and Northern Territory in the final, all seven speeches were entertaining and of course funny!

With speeches kept the crowd entertain as they listened to tales of Bull riding, lost taxi drivers, accidently leaving your child behind at the shops, burnt offering in the kitchen, dealing with teenagers, when 2000 people turn up to your wedding and of course Cathys menopause survival guide for me. The judges were not given an easy job as the deliberated over who would go on to hold the title for this year.

Attending Toastmasters enjoyed an interesting, informative and friendly conference in Chinchilla with Marylin Freeman from Coolum winning the converted International Speech contest on Saturday night. Marilyn will now be heading off to Canada in August to compete against other Toastmasters from the rest of the world.

BLOKES… FROM CHUNKY TO HUNKY…

At Fit Beyond 50 we predominantly have women clients, Yes we have lots of male clients too, attending the Heartbeats classes, the circuit classes and personal training, but they are certainly not a majority and I wonder why?

Because when you look at what we do at Fit Beyond 50, our services focus on RESISTANCE training, moving weights around to build strength and muscle shape and even though women need this as much as men, most people still believe that moving dumbbells is a blokey bloke thing to do.

So I always thought that we would have a majority of male clients wanting to keep their shape and strength for as long as possible as they age, after all there is nothing like a big bicep and muscly thighs to impress us ladies!

But No, men folk working out are a rare species, so why? Well, here is my theory….

There are a lot of blokes out there who will not attempt anything new unless they send their wives in first as a kind of sacrifice to the gym gods. You would be surprised at the amount of times wives have joined our sessions only to have the hubby turn up once he see she has survived. Of course we have men who come along without partners, but these guys really are the bravest of the brave, there is even a legend out there on Bribie, that these guys may have even been brave enough to be seen holding their wives handbags confidently!

The blokes who do train with us enjoy the classes and the coffees “with the girls” afterwards. They gain amazing amounts of strength, endurance, power and just like the

women are happier and healthier. We watch them start with knee and back problems and then go on to squatting with weights and moving with ease. They can get back to walking, kayaking, and gardening with ease.

Their golf swings improve, they have more stamina and stronger shoulders for paddling when they surf and we have also been told their fishing cast goes further.

We have blokes who have suffered heart attacks who are back to jogging and moving impressive weights around because they have progressed safely and surely. Those attending the Heartbeats classes gain fitness, flexibility, stability and co-ordination. The personal training has clients doing clap pushups at 63 and a 70 year old who came to us with knees that caused so much pain he could not walk around a supermarket who now kayaks, walks, cycles and sumo squats with an extra 40kgs in hand and a 75 year old that moves as much weights around as a 45 year old. These blokes are looking after themselves and enjoying a better life because of it.

When men join our 12 week challenges they lose impressive amounts of weight, John came second in December with a loss of over 13kgs. Previously Ron lost an amazing 21kgs in 12 weeks in another or our challenges. We have discovered that women tend to look at exercise as a way to stay heathy so they can look after their partners and families, and again I can’t understand why more men don’t look at fitness this way. As a Blokey Bloke isn’t it great to be there for your family? But how can you do that when you can’t walk to the end of the road or lift anything heavier than a TV remote?

Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off.

If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop!

Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises.

Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new.

You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are stretching and balance exercises similar to what we do in Heartbeats classes.

When the exercises work one leg at a time – think about your body, does one hip have better movement than the other? Is one knee more stable/stronger than the other? Take each exercise slowly and carefully especially if walking and/or turning are difficult. If possible make sure someone is with you for support.

Remember exercising does becomes easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness.

So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

KNEE LIFTS

Use a stable chair or kitchen bench for support – but do not lean as chair may tip or slide Stand with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Raise one foot up to a height that is comfortable for YOU! Hold for a count of “one and two” Lower foot back to ground and hold for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly on the other leg – remember one leg may be more stable than the other Only do as many knee raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. HEEL PUSH

Use a stable chair or kitchen bench for support – but do not lean as chair may tip or slide Stand with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Raise your heel off the ground to a height that is comfortable for YOU! Push your heel back as far as is comfortable for you and slowly bring it back towards the chair Repeat slowly on the other leg – remember one leg may be more stable than the other Only do as many heel pushes as you feel comfortable doing up to 15.

HIP RASIES TO SIDE

Use a stable chair or kitchen bench for support – but do not lean as chair may tip Stand with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Without bending your knee lift your leg out sideways slowly, to a height that is comfortable for YOU! Hold for a count of “one and Two” Lower slowly to the ground and then repeat on this leg as many as you feel comfortable doing up to 15 Repeat slowly on the other leg – remember one leg may be more stable than the other Rest

HALF SQUATS

Use a stable chair or the kitchen bench SLOWLY Squat slightly, lowering your hips, making sure your knees don’t extend beyond your toes. Count “one and two” on the way lowering yourself Hold for a count “one and two” And SLOWLY stand back up Wait for a count of 20 before repeating Focus on trying to keep your heels down the whole time, if you can. Remember one leg may be more flexible than the other leg – that is ok!

Only go as low as is comfortable for you and both heels remain on the ground.

Naturopathy stresses the promotion of health along with the prevention of disease, patient education and self- responsibility. Naturopathy can incorporate modalities such as Western Herbal Medicine, Nutrition, including diet and lifestyle as well as supplementation with vitamins and minerals. Other modalities often utilised are Iridology, Flower Essences, Mineral Therapy, Homeopathy, and physical therapies such as Massage.

The core principles of naturopathy were first established by Hippocrates, who was considered to be the father of medicine.

I wish to do no harm to my body. I try to use the least invasive therapies. I try to nourish my body with good nutrition and aim to do regular exercise with the aim of preventing disease and I treat my body as a whole physically, spiritually and mentally. I realise that if I use relaxation techniques such as breathing and meditation, this will have a flow on effect to my physical health. I try to educate

I try to let the body be its own natural healer as much as possible by not taking unnecessary drugs that interfere with the body’s natural healing processes .

Wave of support for Moreton Bay seawall study

“To be recognised by the Australian Coastal Councils Association while hosting the 2017 national conference is a fantastic result, a credit to our staff and reaffirms our ongoing commitment to strengthening Moreton Bay’s coastal resilience.”

Councillor Flannery said data collected from the study was now being used to help council proactively manage and maintain its coastal infrastructure.

“With the data captured, council is better equipped to monitor its seawalls now and into the future,” Cr Flannery said.

“It’s valuable, tangible information that is now also being used to help inform important documents for our community like the planning scheme and our Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy.”

“In 2016, council staff embarked on an innovative project utilising remotelypiloted aircraft technology to gather comprehensive data on our region’s seawall infrastructure to help protect and maintain our coastal areas,” Mayor Sutherland said.

Council received the Planning and Management award on the final night of the conference, which saw more than 100 delegates from across Australia tour some of the region’s coastal areas such as Redcliffe, Beachmere and Bribie Island during the three day event.

“Through the use of this technology, council was able to capture data covering more than 31km of seawalls in the region in just three days, including a number of locations that would’ve otherwise been inaccessible on foot.“For the first time ever, council was also able to capture additional data like vegetation lines and beach movements to help understand how sand erosion and replenishment impacts our coast.

Mayor Allan Sutherland accepted the award on behalf of council together with Asset, Maintenance and Construction Spokesperson Councillor Peter Flannery.

Mayor Sutherland expressed his appreciation to the Australian Coastal Councils Association for their support and said council was proud to host the 2017 conference at Mon Komo hotel in Redcliffe, noting that not only was it an opportunity for all coastal councils to share ideas on improving coastal resilience, but a boost for the local economy.

Barry Sammels, Chair of the Australian Coastal Councils Association, said the Australian Coastal Awards were established to acknowledge the achievement of individuals and organisations that have made a significant contribution to the Australian coastal environment, settlements and sustainability.

“The awards are intended to raise community awareness of the importance of the coastal zone and to encourage coastal planning and management practitioners to strive for excellence,” he said.

Politicians may still like to “talk the talk” but on Sunday 21st May over 25,000 Queenslanders and their dogs will “walk the walk”. The Million Paws Walk that is!

Originally conceived by veterinarian Dr Cam Day 23 years ago, Million paws Walk is the RSPCA’s flagship fundraiser. There are 24 walk locations this year and you can simply visit www. millionpawswalk.com.au to find the walk location closest to you.

Over 50,000 animals pass through RSPCA Qld Animal Care Centres every year and well over 14,000 are dogs that have been surrendered, abandoned or seized by Inspectors. These dogs are not as fortunate as your much loved family pet. They often need special veterinary and behavioural treatment and they all need to be de-sexed and vaccinated before they have the chance to find a new home. The money raised through the RSPCA Million Paws Walk enables these dogs to receive daily care, veterinary treatment and funds rehoming programs.

The cost to our community for these animals in need is in the millions.

RSPCA Qld is encouraging everyone to register for their local walk location and start fundraising today Even if you don’t have a dog, you can still join a walk and raise vital funds. Money raised through online fundraising, the sale of merchandise and activities on the day will help to fund our critical work.

Taking part in the RSPCA Million Paws Walk is a great way to help animals in need. All animal lovers are encouraged to brush off their walking shoes, pull out their pet’s leash and bring along their ‘best friend’ to Australia’s leading pet event.

This year RSPCA Qld is hoping to raise over $640,000-money that is absolutely vital.

“Our annual operating costs are just under $48 million in Queensland and we receive less than one percent of that figure in Government funding. So every cent raised helps,” said RSPCA Qld spokesperson Michael Beatty.

Councillor for Division 7, Denise Sims, who is part of the internal council committee spearheading the development of the Disability Access and Inclusion frameworks, said she encouraged residents to register for a focus group in their community, or share their feedback via council’s online survey.

“We’re encouraging as many residents as possible to get involved in the second stage of community consultation and help shape the drafting of council’s first Disability Access and Inclusion Plan,” Cr Sims said.

“We particularly want to hear from residents with disabilities - including both physical and non-physical disabilities - in addition to their friends, family and carers, health care professionals and disability organisations.

Moreton Bay Regional Council is encouraging residents to get involved and have their say in the next stage of community consultation for the development of council’s very first ‘Disability Access and Inclusion Plan’.

“You can get involved by taking part in council’s online survey or registering for one of seven free focus groups which will be held throughout May and June in Redcliffe, Deception Bay, Bunya, North Lakes, Lawnton, Bribie Island and Caboolture.

Once finalised, the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan will clearly set out council’s strategic approach to bettering access in the region for the very first time, exploring practical ways to continue to improve the accessibility of council’s infrastructure, services and information moving forward.

“We want to ensure the Moreton Bay Region is a great place to live, work and play for residents of all abilities. I look forward to delivering this plan and seeing it in action for our community.”

Council’s Lifestyle and Amenity Spokesperson, Councillor Matt Constance encouraged residents to get involved in the second stage of community consultation by registering for one of seven free focus groups being held across the region from 22 May - 8 June 2017 or participating in council’s online survey which had been extended until 5pm, Wednesday 31 May 2017.

Council has engaged disability advocacy group ‘Community Resource Unit’ to host the focus groups on behalf of council.

Although he started in the Maintenance Department he is now an integral part of the Marketing and Events team. Dave is known as a chameleon and master of disguise due to his ability to look the part in whichever role he is asked to play in the Historical reenactments carried out at The Village .

Bongaree’s First Motor Car In 1919, young Ian Hall went with ‘Artie’ of Hall and Bestmann fame to Brisbane on the ‘Koopa’, picked up a 1914 ‘Talbot’ car then set out on a great adventure, motoring back to Bribie.

“There were no roads,” said Ian. “We followed tracks sometimes taking a short cut across a farm with the owner’s permission; otherwise, we skirted the property following the fence line. Often there was a maze of tracks and having taken the wrong one we sneaked across a farm rather than turn back”.

It was a long time ago, but Ian obviously remembered it well. “We got to Caboolture but from there to Bribie was more difficult. There were no farms and only tracks for a horse and rider.

Dave experiences great satisfaction from contrib-uting his time at a notforprofit organization and believes that volunteering is highly associated with greater health and happiness, better sleep, a sense of selfworth, greater wellbeing and longevity.

So, what is Dave’s answer to the question “Why Would You?”

Occasionally there were cattle tracks with trampled vegetation, used by drovers getting cattle or horses down to the Passage and swimming them across to graze on Bribie Island. We cut our way through a lot of bush but made good time. We left Brisbane at daylight and reached the Passage just on dark. We camped near where Dad tied his raft for ferrying cattle across the Passage. Next morning, with great difficulty, we got the Talbot on to the raft to bring it across the Passage. This car had many uses on Bribie Island but the most popular was the run and the southern end of the Island on the hard sand when the tide was out.”

Bribie Island was without formed roads in 1919, so we assume Hall and Bestmann did not pay Caboolture Shire Council‘s ‘Wheel Tax’ that, at the time, was levied on all motor vehicles.

“Why Wouldn’t You?” National Volunteer Week 8th - 14th May 2017 is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers. The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ measure of formal “volunteering” includes people who Caboolture Historic Village willingly give unpaid help in the form of time, services or skills, through an organization or group. Learning to “evict’ the voice of an abuser from your head is a powerful step in reclaiming of your life.

MACE Motorcyclists Advocating Child Empowerment Just recently MACE Sunshine Coast Chapter received a call from a lady from Townsville who’s son was in the Mater Hospital suffering with Epilepsy, he has been for many years and seizures were increasing on a daily bases. His name was Josh! Josh and his mum were going to be alone and had no family and Friends here to support them while he was in Hospital here in Brisbane. Mace Sunshine Chapter offered a visit to Josh while he was in hospital to brighten up his day. Nadine (Josh’s Mum) was over the moon. Josh now has been given a his treatment and within weeks, they could return to Townsville.

MACE is a volunteer/community minded organisation who are passionate about protecting children. They are a social motorcycle club riding together, to help keep children safe in the wake of abuse.

There is a MACE chapter on the Sunshine Coast and we have in our region members of this chapter. Children breaking free from abuse can benefit greatly from the wider community acknowledging their

Domestic violence takes many forms but in all cases has lasting emotional and psychological effects long after any physical injuries have healed. For many victims moving forward is a long and painful process of reclaiming their dignity, self-worth, self-identity, and confidence. Psychologically, moving from being a “victim” to “thriving” in life is a difficult process because of the changes that occur in the brain when the stress response has been on alert for so long.

Living with the ongoing fear of what may happen trains the brain to become hypervigilant or always “on guard.” This state is often quite necessary to ensure survival, but the human system is not designed to remain in the stress state for lengthy periods of time. The brain quickly develops neural pathways around this state that become stronger each time the pathway is activated. In addition to this, the human brain has a negativity bias. When we are not focussing our attention, the default network of the brain is activated. Unfortunately, this part

By calling a transgender person this one thing, this ‘dead name’, it would, in a single word, hit all your personal insecurities, bring up buckets of past trauma, deny you your identity, and demonstrate a fundamental lack of respect. Internet users were outraged. So

Conversion Therapy Since Donald Trump has been inaugurated, there has been an ongoing debate (thanks to Vice-President Mike Pence) about legalising conversion therapy in America. Conversion therapy, also known as pseudoscience or reparative therapy, is an umbrella term used to describe various psychologically abusive treatment designed to change someone’s sexual orientation from homosexual, bisexual or otherwise to heterosexual. Currently, some of the leading celebrities and politicians who have a strong influence on the societal views of the world, view homosexuality as harmful and anti-religious. Conversion therapy is reported to be psychologically damaging and has left the LGBTQ+ community subjected to the abuse: depressed, suicidal, dead or dealing with other mental health problems. Yet this has not been enough to incite protest on the issue. Only six of the fifty-two states (that’s 11.5%!) in the U.S have placed jurisdiction on conversion therapy for minors.

The use of conversion therapy in America is seeing an increase in suicide rates across the country. People who have suffered from conversion therapy are 8.9 times more likely to contemplate suicide, they are also 5.9 times more likely to face depression than that of their peers, three times more likely to use illegal drugs and are at a much higher risk for contracting an STD. How can somebody mentally abuse someone to the point of wanting to take their own life?

Leelah Alcorn, a 17-year-old transgender teen from Ohio, committed suicide after suffering through a version of the therapy in 2014. She posted her suicide note on Tumblr (a social media/ blogging website) after expressing her experiences of our society’s standards for the treatment trans folk. Leelah’s death has caused an uproar from the internet, seeing the inception of hashtag #Leelah’sLaw and #pinkforLeelah.

Unfortunately, even though she has passed away neither her school nor her parents respect her. They posted a memorial on their school website, and

much they even went to the extent of attacking Leelah’s parents over Twitter and Facebook.

In 2014, there were one thousand and ninety-seven hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community and you’re going to tell me its ok or even worse, they deserved it? How did all these deaths occur without society highlighting the injustice of it? Let’s revisit the Pulse Nightclub shooting. Fifty people were murdered. Fifty people were taken from this Earth because the shooter- a closeted homosexual himself- decided that he would massacre a nightclub for the reason of ‘wanting America to stop bombing his country’. Patience Carter, a victim of the shooting recounted her horrifying experience in the bathroom of the club. “I said, ‘God, if this is how I have to go, please take me, I just don’t want any more shots.” Now that Donald Trump has been inaugurated will this become normal? To take it upon yourself to kill or attack someone because you hate them? By legalising conversion therapy hate crimes will become okay, it will make LGBTQ+ community become even more vulnerable than it already is, more susceptible to attacks and crimes against them.

What is the solution to these problems?

Ban conversion therapy altogether, not just the licensed professional therapists, but the unlicensed ones too. The rest of America and the rest of its forty-six states should follow in the footsteps Vermont, California, New Jersey, Illinois, Oregon, and the District of Columbia, who, have placed a ban on this destructive “cure”. The treatment causes tension among families, deaths and pain.

Consequently, this is why we should ban conversion therapy and eradicate all the abuse, pain and suffering that goes along with it.

The Evolution of the iPhone

The iPhone has been around for ten years. We have all seen the amazing technology and design difference. With the anniversary, this year I decided that it would be nice to show everyone the evolution of the iPhone.

On June 29th, 2007, the first generation of the iPhone was released.

It can’t connect to the internet the screen was 3.5-inch and had a 320x480 pixel resolution screen. The iPhone was priced at $499 for the 4GB and $599 for the 8GB model oncontract (those prices weren’t unheard of at the time). 2008 the iPhone 3g was announced. The 3G was warmly received and people started to see the long-term potential in the iPhone.

There isn’t much difference between the iPhone and the iPhone 3G. 2009 the tradition of adding the ‘S’ started with the 3GS. This generation got a camera update, voice record and a better speed added to it. These first three phones were the same screen size so nothing much happened with them. The actual design of the phone for the three generations were the corners round and the power switch is on the top along with the 3.5mm headphone jack.

June 24th,, 2010 the iPhone 4 was released. The display of the iPhone 4 is manufactured by LG. the screen size of this phones is on an 8.9 cm 960x640 display. There were over 1.7 million copies sold some customers didn’t get one because they didn’t have enough materials to make more. Soon after the 4 was released the 4s was following shortly after but this was putting the 4 in its shadows because at the time it was known to be the best iPhone yet.

With that it included iOS 5 and iCloud storage, it could also have better internet connection. But from that the screen was still the same size along with the placing of the headphone jack at the top of the phone it still came in the black and white version that only stuck with the four, it doesn’t come in white on any other phone besides the 3g.

The iPhone 5 was the start of new generation it had a bigger screen.

It could have, dual-channel Wi-Fi, and 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency spectrums. Camera: On the rear camera, there’s the same number of megapixels as the iPhone 4S iOS 6 (of course), plus Siri support for launching apps. The 5c was a little bit better than the 5 but it came with a completely different design the 5c had colour

The iPhone 5s was released about the same time as the 5c but this is when apple got big and where the colours that we see on the iPhone today this phone came out with gold, silver and black (rose gold doesn’t come out until the 6) The iPhone 6 and 6s plus was released in 2014 this year for apple they took a big turn on the design of the iPhone.

They made curved edges for this design and have made the biggest iPhone known so far there in no difference between the iPhone 6 or 6s plus only that one of them had a 4.7-inch display and the other a 5.5-inch display. This model came in gold, rose gold, silver with either a black or white front screen or space grey. The iPhone se is like the original iPhones with the rectangle look to it. It was released in 2016 and has a better processor and camera. It comes in the colours from the 6’s as well. iPhone 7, this got people rattled up because of their idea of making it more water resilient by taking away the headphone jack and make Bluetooth air pods but to get this it does come with earphones that plug into the lightning charger. This model is the same size for the 7 with a 4.7-inch screen and the 7 plus has a 5.5-inch screen but has duel cameras at the back allowing it to be able to zoom into surfaces 4x the amount than any other iPhone. It comes with an additional jet black colour (with the options of the other as well).

The iPhone 7 plus will be the same as the 7s but will be coming on additional red colour.

The iPhone 8 or as they might call it the iPhone edition. It will be called this because it will be coming out on apples ten-year anniversary. This phone will be a whole new evolution. It will not include the headphone jack, and apple is heard to be bringing back the colour white and the glass back of the phone a lot like the iPhone 4 series.

Apple has a major iPhone redesign planned for 2017, with a glass body and edge-to-edge OLED display. The new iPhone may be sold alongside upgraded (but standard) 4.7 and 5.5inch iPhones. Some Expected Features are an; 5.8” OLED display, Faster A11 processor, Glass body, Edge-to-edge display, No Home button and Wireless charging. With the no home button, it is rumoured that we will be able to just place our finger on the screen without it being on and it will unlock.

Association hold national Simultaneous Story time annually. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, preschools, child care centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

By facilitating National Simultaneous Story time, we aim to: •

Promote the value of reading and literacy;

Promote the value and fun of books;

•

Promote an Australian writer and publisher;

•

Promote story time activities in public libraries and communities around the country;

•

Providing opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and others to participate in and enjoy the occasion.

NSS receives positive media coverage, generates a great deal of community interest and is held annually as part of Library and Information Week.

In 2016 over 520,000 children at over 3,500 locations across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime, reading the book I Got This Hat, written by Jol and Kate Temple and illustrated by Jon Foye , enjoying a range of supporting educational activities, songs, games, dress ups and lots of fun.

I hope you all get to participate in this fun activity and if you are home schooling don’t forget your local library will be running this activity, so why not join in and all read together.

SUSTAINABLE GARDENING SOILS AIN’T SOILS PT 10 Last issue we talked about the benefits of incorporating organic matter to our soils and the importance of using organic acids such as Humic and Fulvic which contain high carbon residues, we also mentioned how these organic acids have the ability to detox and condition the soil by stimulating the micro organisms that are essential for breaking down organic matter. Now with this in mind, in this article, I would like to present the importance of harmonising your soil by applying different types of food sources which target a wide range of soil micro-organisms for optimum growth.

Now if you want to take it one step further, we can use a product called Fish Hydrolysate, which has been produced by adding fish waste and molasses (unrefined sugar) together and fermented with lacto bacillus, in “Chlorine free” water, unlike the heating process used to manufacture standard fish emulsions. Therefore the Hydrolysate contains more of the beneficial amino acids and enzymes and healthy oils which the microbes just love to feed on.

Note that chlorine free water is used as the chlorine can kill off microbes. I was at a seminar last year on producing AACT. Actively Aerated Compost Tea. In preparation we collected some forest leaf matter from the bush and placed it in a cardboard tray then applied a little coating of fish hydrolysate diluted in water, then covered the lot with a Hessian bag and placed in a dark corner of the shed for 24 hours. Upon inspection the following day there was a white layer of fungal threads visible all over the leaf matter which resembled a head of fine white hair.We then placed the leaf matter in a 20 litre mesh teabag and suspended it in 1000 litre IBC storage container filled with water.We then added a pump to aerate the brew added some worm juice and molasses and brewed the lot for 24 hours.

We took a sample and went to the laboratory and under the electron microscope you could see a thriving life of micro-organisms dashing back and forward in just one droplet of solution.

When using town water you can aerate the water in a drum before hand to release the chlorine from the water into the atmosphere for 30 minutes before adding your microbe food for optimum results.The expected outcome will be a mix of beneficial Bacteria and Fungi that are called aerobic, which thrive with further aeration to replicate at their best. Well that’s all this issue, so here’s hoping your lawns and gardens are literally replicating with healthy soil micro-organisms. Stay tuned for Soils ain’t Soils part 11. Next issue!

Ahh. Autumn, you got to love it. The best time to be working outdoors in the garden with these cool mornings and warm sunny days.These pleasant temperatures can put a spring in your step to tackle those laborious jobs that may have been put off due to the Easter holiday season. But if you did get to dig in compost, mulch your veggie gardens and plant out your winter crop by now, then these mild warm sunny days would be a blessing as your seedlings will get a superior head start indeed.

Well on my rounds last month I was called to arms to help if I can to assist to fortify some gardens and lawns in preparation for winter now fast approaching. And my mantra for May? Manure, mulching and….

Why target certain micro flora and not just boost all microbes in your soil?

Well there is beneficial bacteria and fungi that decompose organic matter and there are pathogens that cause harm to live plant tissue. Plants and gardens in general would benefit from a dominant brew of beneficial fungal microorganisms, so when using feeder mulches like sugar cane mulch or Lucerne in your garden and if you were to spray the mulch with diluted fish emulsion and watered it all in, you would immediately stimulate the aerobic bacteria and fungi that aid in decomposing your organic matter which feeds the soil and in turn feeds your plants.

Well this has got to be one of my favourite flowering trees.The Xanthostemon chrysanthus or Golden Penda. The amazing thing about the Golden Penda is that when conditions are just right it will go into a massive bloom, totally covered in flowers. And guess what? The conditions are perfect and the bud’s forming now on several specimens that I know of here on Bribie Island are literally bursting at their seams indeed.

The Golden Penda has been well utilised over the years as a street and landscape specimen in South East Qld. And they are actually a rainforest specimen so if the conditions are not ideal they will flower sporadically on and off throughout the year and look pretty ordinary, but when in full bloom what a sight to be hold.

In their natural rainforest environment they can reach 15 metres in height but in cultivation more likely to be around 6 to 8 metres tall.

There is a smaller cultivar called ‘Fairhill Gold’which only grows to 3 metres tall and 2 metres wide and also a dwarf variety, Xanthostemon verticillatus ‘little penda’which only grows 1 metre x 1 metre, there is also a white flowering species which grows to 8 metres tall called Xanthostemon whitei with the common name oddly enough (Red Penda), due to the deep red flush of its new foliage. The birds love these flowers so hope you have got room for one of the many varieties available today from your local nursery.

Fertiliser and manure tonics are excellent for soil and foliar fertilising and give a quick but gentle feed to your seedlings and assists them greatly in establishment. While were on the subject of getting a head start, soaking your seeds in amino acids or kelp tonics greatly amplify the germination rate and this is the key to getting your crop up and running faster. Improved germination and foliar fertilising with fish, kelp or worm based brews really build up the cells in the plant leaf and enhance the photosynthesis needed to grow quality produce and a far more robust plant.

I am often amazed when contemplating seed germination at the amount of energy expended from a seed embryo as it sets its roots and unfurls a leaf while anchoring itself in soil substrate before it catches a single ray of sunlight.

It exhausts its stored reserves in a one for all, total burst of faith, that sunlight and moisture are there to be tapped into for support and to recharge its energy for its next growth phase.

This is why agronomists and horticulturists have studied their craft. To assist in plant establishment by creating the ideal growing environment for every stage of growth.

While it may be obvious that a seedling that gets very little moisture may be set back and have its growth retarded or if sunlight is not ideal the plant often over extends itself toward any available light until conditions improve. And if your lively hood as a farmer is jeopardised by unforeseen environmental conditions from excess rain or floods, then the overall health of your plants will determine how resilient your crop is and its ability to bounce back. It all comes down to providing optimum growing conditions with luxury levels of plant available nutrients at all times.

That said, then nutrition, is the key to all plant metabolic processes and scientists and farmers around the world are now embracing a blending of biological microbial brews with chemical fertilisers in a fusion blend, to create robust plants, with higher nutritional value, using less chemicals, which actually costs them less in the long run by encompassing a smart farming approach. And this is why I advise the use of organic manures to feed the soil, foliar fertilising with tonics and also using your slow release plant food fertiliser. It is not only a more sustainable approach but a far more beneficial one, as we are feeding the microbial life, which supports the plant life, which also nourishes human life. You got to love that!

Fifteen Minutes of Separation

It’s no secret that a five iron, sand wedge, putter, a good sledging, bucket of Shiraz, a 300gm porterhouse and mateship have epitomised the game of golf for more than a century. It was recently suggested that these seven ingredients should be adopted by our Prime Minister to assess the fitness of new Australian Citizens although I feel that the golfing community would probably be keen to add three additional citizenship tests including the 3 foot blind-folded putting challenge; the golf cart driving test where the candidate drives a golf cart with one hand whilst collecting a golf ball from the fairway with the remaining hand; and thirdly the ball recovery test where the candidate is subjected to a barrage of verbal sledging whilst recovering a golf ball from a water hazard wearing underwear. Perhaps the Iconic Bribie Island Golf Club, located on the southern tip of Bribie Island or the Sassy Pacific Harbour Golf & Country Club located 15 minutes (12km) to the north would be prepared to pilot the ‘New Citizen Test’ for the Department of Immigration.

Since we are talking golf, when was the last time you hit a golf ball or visited your local golf club for a long lunch or dinner? I would guess that unless you are a golfer or attending your mates wedding or corporate day event at a Golf Course, you probably don’t prioritise this experience.

Recently I had a chat with the General Managers from the two local Bribie Island Golf Courses, Will Keiler (General Manager, Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club) and Steve Middleton (General Manager, Bribie Golf Club). I learned that these outstanding golf clubs have three things in common; they are very community focussed; they share a passion for presenting championship golf courses and they provide a very warm and friendly environment. Both managers have a common goal of growing the game of golf and sharing their facilities with the community. I did a little research to find out just how much it costs to play a round of golf at one of Bribie Island’s golf courses and discovered that you can play 18 holes of golf midweek at Pacific Harbour for about $49.00 and Bribie Island Golf Course for around $44.00. Both golf clubs have special golf midweek golf deals including carts from $50.00pp. From a food experience, the taste and value at both golf clubs is exceptional. 1 tbsp maple syrup 1 tsp vanilla extract 25g unsalted butter ground cinnamon, to serve icing sugar or extra maple syrup, to serve (optional) Method Slice the banana into a small bowl and mash using a fork. Add the chopped chocolate and mix to combine.

Lay 2 slices of bread on the work surface. Divide the chocolate and banana mixture between them, spreading it almost to the edges. Top each with a second slice of bread and press together to make a sandwich.

In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, double cream, maple syrup and vanilla extract. Melt the butter in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Lay one sandwich into the egg mixture to coat one side, then carefully flip it over so that both sides of the sandwich are soaked in the egg. Lower the sandwich into the hot frying pan and cook for about 1 min on each side, until golden brown and the chocolate has started to melt. Repeat with the second sandwich.

Cut the sandwiches in half to serve and sprinkle with a little ground cinnamon and either icing sugar or extra maple syrup if you’re feeling super-indulgent.

Bribie Island Soccer Football Club News Nearly 400 soccer juniors converged on Miniroos Carnival If you noticed a little extra traffic on Bribie Island on Saturday 22 April 2017, then you can probably put it down to the stack of parents who gathered at the Bribie Island Soccer Football Club for a junior soccer carnival.

This year the club was excited to host the under 7s carnival which resulted in over 60 teams enjoying the game of football.

At this age, the fields are smaller, the rules are modified and there are fewer players on a team. This means the game is more enjoyable and players have more opportunities to touch the ball and ultimately score more goals.

Each year the club hosts a carnival

Under 7 Bribie Orange as part of the Sunshine Coast Football competition and John Aldous president, says his team had been planning the event for some weeks. The carnival was a huge success and we were thrilled with the commitment of our volunteers and the contributions from local community groups and businesses. The kids loved every minute of the games.

This year the club is also going from strength to strength; the player numbers are up, the number of girls playing football has increased and the club is putting the finishing touches on a canteen renovation.

The club has also welcomed Plumbing Bribie Island as a new club sponsor and we welcome the support The Blue Pacific Hotel and Dossel’s Engineering have recently provided.

Come down to the grounds and check out all the action of our senior competition on a Friday night. We are family friendly with our canteen and a bar in operation.

Just bring a chair or a blanket. Don’t forget to keep an eye on our Facebook for our weekly senior teams Bribie Player of the Game awards which The Blue Pacific hotel have kindly donated.

Tigers Welcomes New Senior Women’s Coach Mike Mesaros has joined the Bribie Tigers as coach to the Senior Women’s team.

He brings with him over two decades of football coaching experience and the club is confident in his ability to field the best possible team each and every week.

“I emphasize discipline and I’m looking to build a culture that starts with the team and extends to our club,” Mesaros said. “I feel extremely confident with my ability to lead this team.”

Mesaros saw the team continue their

undefeated run this week. The game was fast paced and very exciting. The Tigers came out early with Chelsea Falzon scoring 3 minutes in and Elyshia Lomas backing this up 5 minutes later. Going into half-time 2-0 the Tigers were keen to push themselves and came onto the field totally pumped. The Beegees weren’t giving up and their defence kept the Tigers scoreless for much of the second half. The next goal wasn’t scored until the 76 minute mark of the match.

The Tigers then brought it home scoring the final goal with only minutes to go.

“The Senior Women are currently sitting second on the ladder and the club is ecstatic,” John Aldous, club president said. “We know that Mike will invest in the team 110% and we believe that this will continue their success.”

By Cheryl Williams JUNE FISHING REPORT Well the weather has been great for fishing over the last few weeks it is starting to cool down getting ready for winter and the start of the cold fishing season. There have been several anglers getting out and about over the last few weeks and catching plenty. The Bream are certainly on the move being caught at White Patch, Red Beach, Avon Wrecks, Banksia Canals and also at Bongaree at the Lock most common bait for catching the Bream is Prawns, Live Blood Worms and Yabbies. Find your way to Sandstone Point and the Ripples to catch some Snapper but you need some Cuttlefish for bait. Mackerel at The Bird Cage with Pilchards and Slimmeys for bait. Mud crabs are still about Ningi Creek, Lime Pocket and Banksia Canals grab some Mullet Heads. Sand Crabs in the passage.

The old saying is You won’t catch a crab in a month that doesn’t have an r in it but that is proving to be wrong as we are still catching plenty of crabs throughout the passage.

With the June holidays fast approaching don’t forget to book your camping sites as they are selling out fast and if you are planning on camping on the weekends campsites are needing to book at least 2 weeks in advance.

There are still lots of campsites available at Poverty Creek Camp Ground in the group area.

FISHING TIPS FOR BRIBIE ISLAND There are three main questions I get asked about fishing on the surf at Bribie, and this relates to all surf beaches.

1. What can I expect to catch?

2. What is the best rig to use?

3. Do I need to have a 12 foot surf rod to fish the surf beach?

Firstly, let’s deal with the main fish you can expect to catch. There are all year round fish that frequent the surf like Dart and whiting.

In summer the whiting tend to be the larger species of summer whiting. These fish have a size limit of 23cm and a bag of 30. In winter the whiting are normally trumpeter /diver whiting which have black spots on their sides.

As these fish are a much smaller species they don’t have a size limit but do have a bag limit of 50. Dart are caught all year round and have a size of 30cm and a bag of 30.

There are also pelagic fish that run up and down the beach and these also change with the seasons. In winter they tend to be tailor, (size of 35cm bag of 20 fish) and in summer mackerel are the fish to chase.

White Spot Disease Response: Movement Control Area

What’s the rig to use on whiting? Well it really is up to you either a running sinker or a bottom sinker rig will work but make sure you use a small hook as whiting have tiny mouths(especially winter whiting ). With the bigger fish like tailor or mackerel a running sinker rig with a heavy trace and a gang hook is the go as they will bite and run with your baits and the least resistance they feel the better to keep them attached to the hooks. Some advice on the sinker with the running sinker rig is to use a flat sinker so that it doesn’t move as much in the rolling surf.

Well the news of White Spot has hit the Moreton Bay region which has impacted on our fresh supplies of bait for fishing it is fine to eat cooked prawns. White spot disease positive detections of the virus that causes white spot disease in northern Moreton Bay, the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries has put in place an expanded movement control area. The New movement control order replaces the existing restrictions in place on the Logan River and extends from Caloundra to the New South Wales border, following a line 100 metres off the eastern coasts of Bribie, Moreton and Stradbroke Islands. To reduce the likelihood of the disease spreading it is prohibited to remove the following RAW to move crustaceans from the movement control areas: PRAWNS, CRABS, YABBIES & MARINE WORMS. Crustaceans caught in the movement control area can be moved RAW anywhere within the area, however, anyone wishing to move crustaceans out of the area, whether to sell or to be eaten, must cook them first. Cooking crustaceans destroys the virus that causes white spot disease. The movement restrictions apply fresh and frozen crustaceans, as freezing does not destroy the virus. Penalties may apply to anyone who breaches these restrictions. Bait prawns(including freshly caught) sourced from outside the movement control area can be used, however, once brought into the movement control area, bait cannot be removed. Fishers should not use prawns meant for human consumption as bait.

HOW TO IDENTIFY WHITE SPOT DISEASE IN PRAWNS Prawns with White Spot disease may have a loose shell with numerous white spots(0.5 – 2.0 mm in diameter) on the inside surface of the shell and a pink and red discolouration.

Do I need a 12 foot surf rod? If you are targeting the bigger pelagic fish then you need to cast over the back of the breakers so yes you will need a longer rod and heavier set up to get to where the fish are. If it is whiting and dart you are after then a normal 6 or 7 foot rod will do the trick as they tend to feed inside the breaking waves in the shallows.
