New bridge at what cost The beginning of state election season has begun with the new LNP candidate for Pumicestone waving at vehicles as they approach or depart the Bribie Bridge. This year sees a changed electorate of Pumicestone with the King street area of Caboolture taken out and an area north of the Caboolture showgrounds added. These changes have left the electorate as very marginal and will be keenly watched on election night. One thing that will remain in the upcoming election campaign is the issue of a new bridge. The LNP have promised a new bridge at every election since the old promise of a new Caboolture hospital was delivered by the Goss Labor government.

The regular stories of the age and limits of the bridge are rolled out at every turn. This election will be the same.

Residents should consider the cost of a new bridge when it is offered by state election candidates. The current situation does not warrant a new bridge to be paid for by the state.

People are aware that the southbound bridge over the Caboolture river has been demolished and replaced by the state after Queensland Transport inspectors judged it as needed. The same inspectors will order a replacement of the Bribie bridge when it is needed in about 20 years. A new bridge built before that will happen only if State assets are sold, a toll from a private contractor or there is dramatic increase in land taken from national parks for residential estates. It may be possible that all three will occur if significant roads projects are included.

Being a long term resident of the Island I and others I talk to are increasingly exasperated by the traffic on Bribie now. I encourage electors to ask pollies promising a new bridge for answers to the issues involved.

of Queen Elizabeth is probably hanging above his double king-size four-poster bed. Either way I was privileged to be in Greg’s home and very impressed when he produced two of the finest espressos to accompany our chat.

When Australian pianist, vocalist, entertainer and composer Greg Andrew graduated from the Queensland Conservatory of Music in 1989, he had no concept that 28 years later in 2017 he would receive a personal invitation to the worlds’ biggest tribute music festival stage in the UK to perform music from the third most successful artist in history, Sir Elton John.

Greg Andrew is the world’s leading Elton John musical Impersonator and tours Australia and the world performing his Elton John Tribute Show, I’m Still Standing - The Elton John Experience. I had the privilege of meeting Greg in the tranquil setting of his Bribie Island home in Queensland. Apart from meeting a man with immense musical talent, I was fascinated to find out whether the man himself bared any resemblance to Sir Elton John. Admittedly l had undertaken a degree of research, however when the door opened, I was taken by Greg’s stature, his facial features, glasses, hair style and broad smile. Without any doubt Greg Andrew is the closest thing to meeting the Rocket Man himself. The only disappointment was not being met at the door by Greg’s Personal Butler and I noticed that the portrait of Queen Elizabeth was not hanging above the dining table. I decided to forgive this because Greg may have given his Personal Butler a Rostered Day Off and the portrait

When you meet Greg Andrew, you feel a sense of peace and calmness which is entangled with his ability to communicate and share his passion for family, music and life. Born and raised in Brisbane, Greg Andrew was destined to be a musical champion given that both his primary school teacher parents played a combination of piano, violin and saxophone. In saying this Greg was a very handy cricketer and rugby player and can fillet any style of fish thanks to the years of family holidays spent on Bribie Island.

I am also informed that Greg thrives on creating really hot curries and home-made sushi lathered in wasabi. Like many of us, Greg Andrew secured his first car loan at age 19, the only difference is that Greg had little intention of buying anything else but a grand piano and so diverted the $3,000 bank loan where it belonged – I am sure the unnamed bank has earned its’ rewards over the years from Greg.

Greg Andrew is on one of the most grounded characters you will ever meet.

His beliefs and values come from his strong inner core and intense love of his friends, family and environment. Greg said, “You can perform on the biggest stages, travel the world and share in extraordinary celebrations, but it all comes down to my family and my friends who make me who I am.” he said, “without my wife’s guidance and love, my children’s support and my Bribie Island community and long-term friendships, I would not be the person I am today.”

Prior to making the transition and creating the Elton John Experience, Greg performed 5-6 nights per week for the best part of 20 years as well as managing and placing musicians across Australia’s premier 5-star resorts. Most people tend to run for their lives when you start to talk about change, innovation or reinvention.

When you consider the challenge and risks involved with reinventing yourself to impersonate and perform Sir Elton John’s music, it has all the parallels of climbing Mt Everest in a pair of boxer shorts. It’s one thing looking like a Rocket Man but another thing having the talent to command the stage and play some of

the most difficult pieces of music. It was Greg’s fans who frequented the piano bars and hotel resorts across Australia for 20 years that convinced Greg that his marriage to Elton John’s music was inevitable. In 2009, Greg reportedly said to his wife, “I am fully booked for gigs across the upcoming year, however everywhere I’ve played over the past 10 years, people tell me how much I

resemble Elton John and I think that time has come to create a niche and share the Elton John Experience across the world.” It is true to say that Greg had become a little weary after 20 years of playing on the piano circuit particularly to requests of ‘The Piano Man’ and ‘Khe Sanh’, however ultimately Greg Andrew is an entertainer and communicator with an acute business mind. Greg said, “Elton John can’t be everywhere and I had a gift and opportunity to research and create a quality product that is respectful to both Sir Elton John and Sir Elton John’s long time collaborative composer, Bernie Taupin and I think I have done that.” Greg Andrew has performed his Elton John Experience Concerts for the past 8 years and when I ask Greg about his professional future, he was quick to make the point that Sir Elton John is only 70 years old and he is just 48 and still very passionate about playing the piano and sharing Elton John’s music and so Greg intends to sustain the Elton John Experience for many years to come, he just loves what he does.

Sir Elton John is famous for his glamorous and colourful stage attire which underwent design variations across the decades. Greg Andrew knows all too well the challenges of creating costumes that respects the Elton John wardrobe and Greg has an extensive wardrobe of Elton John outfits which are made by a seamstress in

Melbourne under the direction of Greg and his team. He has about 10 different jackets which are selected based on the type of performance. Greg tells me that in fact Elton John plays his entire concerts in the same costume, however sometimes he would change for an encore.

Whist there will be no reference to future Knighthood or legend status for Greg Andrew, there is a synergy and similarly with the gifts that life offers us and Greg Andrew and Sir Elton John were both given a gift to play the piano and entertain people. It is easy to understand why the talented Greg Andrew would look to share the Elton John Music Legacy. Sir Elton John is extraordinary in that he first started playing the piano at 4 and achieved a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age 11 and in 2017 has sold over 250 million records. Most people will remember Sir Elton John’s tribute to Princess Diana in September 1997 as he performed the re-written version of Candle in the Wind which became the biggest selling single of all time. When you start talking about the songs that Greg enjoys performing, Greg said, “If I was to choose a song that touches people anywhere in the world, no matter what country or language they speak, I would choose Your Song.” he said, “This song was written in 1969, and the words and music are so relevant today. I can stop singing for the chorus and everyone sings the lyrics of the song, it’s a spine-tingling experience when you hear 5-10,000 people singing and waving their mobile phone lights in the air.”

Greg Andrew is a humble confident generous man who exudes respect for all who surround him; his creativity and accuracy in performance is unmistakable, his presence and energy are palpable; he is a seasoned communicator and storyteller and deeply thankful for his gift of music and his friends and family on beautiful Bribie Island. Being an Aussie performing British Royalty (Sir Elton John) at the worlds biggest tribute festival this year in the UK will be the biggest performance of his career. Greg departs for the UK on 7th August to perform at Tribfest 2017 and will play several other concerts across the UK before returning home to perform a special concert at Bribie Island in September 2017.

These types of scams also often go unreported or can be difficult to prosecute or for victims to recover losses. Let alone the emotional implications of such crime which is so devastating to many older adults, leaving them in a very vulnerable position and without time/career and often any savings to recoup and survive their losses.

It’s not just wealthy seniors who are targeted. It’s all, including those on lowincomes and with little wider support e.g. a proactive family member who can educate them or be available to cross check or discuss things with.

This is a message that needs to be continually promoted given the increasingly pervasive nature of this type of crime and the devastating consequences for those affected.

There has been increasing fraud tactics targeting senior citizens. Praying on their honesty and vulnerability. And it’s no longer just dodgy emails re ‘inheritances’ being held in foreign bank accounts or the situations where scammers under the guise of banks etc. try to get sensitive information from people.

There are several cases lately of people being called posing as ‘computer technicians’ that ask seniors to log in and run various ‘tests’ to check their connection or whatever but they are really attempts to hack and take control of the computer and/or mine sensitive information including all cached data for bank accounts etc. One risks being cleared out of not just the bank but on/via every account they have. Along with identity theft.

Financial scams targeting seniors have become so prevalent that they’re now considered “the crime of the 21st century.”

Why? Because seniors are thought to have a significant amount of money sitting in their accounts.

Your Local Councillor Update

A local resident approached me earlier this year offering to donate a Gallipoli Pine Tree for planting at Beachmere in memory of those who served in World War 1.

This tree originated from seedlings descendants of the original Lone Pine Tree seeds brought back from Gallipoli by soldiers in 1915 and purchased from Yarralumla Nursery in Canberra. After two years since planting, the Gallipoli Pine seedling has successfully grown into a healthy plant.

many of these have family and friends who live in Beachmere.

The tree will soon be planted and a plaque, kindly provided by one the resident who donated the tree, will sit flush into a stone slab adjacent to the tree. The stone slab was provided by Council and will double as a seat and the photo below gives us an idea of what it will look like.

The wording on the plaque states the following:

This deeply meaningful offer was graciously appreciated and accepted by Council and the tree will be planted in Clayton Park, Beachmere. It will stand as a memorial to the numerous soldiers who did not return from the war as

In the 2017/18 budget there has been a strong focus on roads and community infrastructure for Division 1, which will deliver more than $4.4 million in vital road, stormwater infrastructure and drainage upgrades for Division 1.

I am pleased to announce a major $635,000 upgrade for Welsby Parade, Bongaree as well as other works which include pedestrian crossings, resurfacing, and new lighting. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their involvement in the consultation process of this important safety and beautification project. There has also been $725,000 allocated for resurfacing works for Donnybrook Road, Donnybrook.

Another major item is a $1 million upgrade of drainage infrastructure along Boronia Drive, Bellara in addition to further drainage improvements on Bibimulya Street.

outdoor spaces and community facilities to add to Division 1’s already enviable lifestyle. Council will invest in a range of upgrades to parks, playgrounds and outdoor spaces in Division 1 including a $200,000 upgrade of parking and footpath connections at the Sylvan Beach Esplanade Park and a $60,000 renewal of playground facilities on Toorbul Esplanade.

I will also deliver two new off-leash dog exercise areas in Bellara and Sandstone Point - in addition to new outdoor exercise equipment on Godwin Beach Esplanade and footpath improvements on Verdoni Street and Boronia Drive, Bellara.

There will also be $260,000 to be spent on improving facilities at the councilowned Bongaree Caravan Park for both residents and visitors, including a new camp kitchen and playground. The new camp kitchen will feature a spacious deck where tourists can take in the spectacular views of the Pumicestone Passage, while the new playground will help keep the kids entertained while their families relax and enjoy Bribie’s tranquil environment.

While I haven’t the room to list all the exciting projects to come in 2017/18, I will keep you updated as they progress during the year.

Mr Miles said partnering with peak bodies such as the Association ensured that retailers’ views and questions were represented and that information could be provided well in advance of the start date for the ban.

“We understand that retailers, and the community, will need some time to adjust to the ban,” Mr Miles said.

“Whilst the legislation will be introduced mid-2017, the ban won’t commence until 1 July 2018.

The retail sector will work with the State Government to help prepare Queenslanders for life without single-use, plastic shopping bags from mid-2018.

Environment Minister Steven Miles said the National Retail Association will launch an awareness campaign to inform retailers of the impending changes.

“Around 900 million single-use, lightweight plastic shopping bags are used each year and up to 16 million bags are thrown away, ending up in our waterways, beaches and parks,” Mr Miles said.

“Shopping bag litter is an eyesore, and these bags can take thousands of years to fully break down.

“One of our election commitments was to investigate initiatives to address the litter problem and specifically, this conspicuous plastic pollution.

“The National Retail Association will run workshops for retailers all over the state,

“The laws we’re proposing are very similar to those in South Australia, the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania, and it also has bipartisan support in the Parliament.

“We know people want them gone. The recent discussion paper on plastic bags received more than 26,000 submissions, with more than 96 per cent of these supporting the ban.

“While the current proposal is to ban only the light-weight plastic shopping bags, we also intend to work with the department store retail sector on voluntary arrangements to reduce the use of these thicker, heavier single-use plastic bags.”

The plastic bag ban will coincide with the introduction of the Government’s Container Refund Scheme to reduce the impact of drink container litter on Queensland’s environment.

It is budget time again in Federal Parliament.

What that means is that the Federal Government will tell us how it is going to spend our money over the next few years; the Federal Opposition will generally oppose everything, because that is what they do ; the rest, the “ unrepresentative swill “ according to a former Prime Minister, will grasp at any opportunity to get something, anything at all, so that they can display their achievements to the three or four hundreds of Australians they claim to represent.

Underneath, deep underneath the media noise, the prancing, the posing, the print media front page splashes of nonsense, the electronic media ‘ live breaking news ‘ ; within the community, grows a layer of anger like a bacterial froth in a petri dish.

TOUGH LESSONS ABOUT LIFE AT RUBY GAP

Ruby Gap is one of the best kept secrets of Central Australia. A place of wild, untrammelled beauty East of Alice Springs ; not easy to go there, you need 4x4 skills and be independent in tough country. This is a short story based on fact.

The light shimmered and danced over the sandy bed of the Hale River, gully winds hissed and moaned along the edges of the red cliffs ; the mid afternoon heat of Central Australia, in February, physically assaulted the young men lounging in the shade of river gums and in the nearby shadows cast by the sheer rock walls of the narrow gap.

But now, they are rubbished by the media, by marketing trollopes in shopping malls, by school teachers wearing political messages on their grubby, cotton clothing ; all shouting bug eyed bullshit about ‘ halal food ‘, gender neutrality, safe spaces, baby boomers taking all the houses and so on and on…………………!

And.

The whole thing is similar to a slow motion dance……but only one partner seems to hear the music……and so; the dancing continues and the anger rises.

The violins resonate shrilly, the drums pound the ancient rhythms of steps and heartbeats from times long gone, the

oboes oboe, the trumpets trump and the piano tinkles and rolls…

The swirling becomes a vortex of Government, Opposition and Others, smiles grimly held on vacuous faces that, in some cases cannot believe their luck; pudgy, ungraceful forms jerk and gyrate to noise, a breast touches here, a wink flashes there, a penis bulge is accidentally brushed and a bum is gently felt: the Parliamentary dance swishes for the media and the activists, whose acclaim the dancer’s crave. Blonde locks are flung, bobbed helmets of hair spin undisturbed, silvery manes flop and trays of moving alcohol, Dom Perignon of course, are swept clean like a paddock overwhelmed with locust crawlers!!

They were mining rubies. Found in the dry sandy bed of the Hale River, about 140 kms to the North East of where the town of Alice Springs would eventually be built.

It was early in 1888, and the young fellas had been digging and sifting the rubies from the river sand for 18 months. They had been living hard, drinking water filtered from the river sand and eating meat from local animals they had killed.

They were young, tough in mind and body and infectiously optimistic about the mineral wealth they had found.

And life was not that bad...well, it was all they had so they made the best of that.

Even though they worked long hours, first light to last, there were times when youthful energy burst into sand races and wrestling matches. Youthful emotions were expressed in sad, lonely songs whilst they stared into campfires. The flickering firelight played across their young faces, skipping along the rock walls of the gap, reflecting and undulating until the walls became ruby curtains softly waving in the night air.

On moonlit nights, the white sand of the river bed was a motionless, snowy path.

They lay between the waterholes, watching the moon’s face in the water and spooking themselves at the sound of the curlews.

The first news they had had from the outside world was that the London buyers had taken the rubies and wanted more... grins flashed, hats went in the air and they shovelled and sifted with blazing energy.

And, it all happens in the halls of our capitals.

They do try, very hard, to believe in what they believed in when they were young, boys were boys and girls were girls……all that was OK. It had order canvas containing washed and glinting rubies were lashed onto the heaving flanks of the horses, which, when loaded, trooped off through the passes of the Ammarata Ranges, trailing the hopes and dreams of the young miners as they headed South West across Pig and Whistle Creek.

Rumours were heard around the ridges, up the dry gullies and in the wind. Something was happening out in the Centre on a river called the Hale. Could it be true ? Was it that good ? Well...it seemed like it.

Men began to drift towards the place, on the way they found others heading in the same direction.

Specks of humanity in the utter isolation of outback Australia.

The young men of Ruby Gap watched the newcomers trickle in. Not a flood, just a few tough blokes determined to push their luck as far as they could. That was OK. There was room for them and they brought news and gossip as well some new ideas. Some came on camels, not many... and some came with donkeys or perhaps the donkeys brought them ! Who knows ? Donkeys are tough buggers.

The river bed, the craggy outcrops and the narrow gaps rang with human sound ; working, clanging, shouting, singing, swearing and living.

But there was tension crackling above the river gums, everyone was waiting for the next messenger to come in with news, orders for rubies. Confirmation that what they had been doing was worthwhile.

They know, they know, that sure as guns are iron, that we are spending more than we earn ; we are allowing people into our country not to contribute but to take, by fraud, by religious posturing, by any means possible, by having four wives/ partners, money from us……because

it is our money, not the Government’s, Governments don’t have money, they only have ours.

Three out of five people living in our communities do not work, some can’t, some won’t but they all take our money.

They used to believe, and some still cling to that belief that the political leaders they voted for, from whatever side of politics, will know what is happening and will fix it !!.

But. They are beginning to believe that their political leaders don’t listen anymore; they are too busy dancing.

Because that is why they did what they did...to become wealthy. It was a great adventure, true, but the siren song of wealth and independence was in their soul.

That is what drove them.

On a Wednesday morning they came.

Three of them. Tired, dusty, haggard faces sitting on horses wandering in through the Ammarata passes.

One was a mining engineer.

His words stung their hearts. ‘ They are garnets, not rubies. Nobody wants them ! It is all over here. ‘ Silence.

Quiet movement away from the gathering.

Muttered curses, someone kicked a camp oven over.

Klang !

A young man, called Fox, jumped from the cliff into the river bed. He had nothing left, couldn’t afford to leave.

So he decided to stay, forever.

They buried him with love and compassion. Curious for men such as these !

And after that, they left. All of them.

The black, cockatoos stayed.

The gulley winds still hissed and moaned, as they always did.

If you go there today, you can see where they have been. Fox’s grave is there, so are the black cockatoos.

Safety improvement works for King and Lower King Streets Caboolture.

Safety along King and Lower King Streets in Caboolture is set to be improved thanks to a $7.5 million road safety improvement project.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said detailed design of the King and Lower King Streets project was underway.

“The State Government is investing $7.5 million to improve motorists’ safety along this vital link as part of our Targeted Road Safety Initiative program,” Mr Bailey said.

“This is a key component of our commitment to improving road safety by implementing high benefit, cost effective, road upgrades that address known and potential crash locations.

“A review was conducted of King and Lower King Street which assessed a number of various upgrade options that

Community would deliver road safety improvements at locations with high-crash trends.”

Member for Pumicestone Rick Williams said a number of safety upgrade options identified in the review were currently being considered.

“We’re proposing a number of safety improvements at different locations along this stretch including traffic signal modifications, minor intersection improvements and line marking,” Mr Williams said.

“These options are being considered as part of the detailed design process currently underway.

“Community engagement will start soon and feedback will be sought from key impacted stakeholders on the proposed design.

“Further details about the safety treatments will be provided to the local community following community engagement and design progression.”

Design is expected to be finalised later this year, with construction following in the first half of 2018, weather permitting.

Countdown starts for new Dog Breeder Register Mr Williams, who joined thousands of Queenslanders taking part in the RSPCA Million Paws Walk on Sunday, said the new laws will start on 26 May 2017 and will apply to anyone giving away, supplying, selling or advertising dogs born on or after that date.

RSPCA CEO, Mark Townend said he welcomed the initiative saying there is no doubt it’s a major step in the right direction, though he believed it wouldn’t be the panacea to completely eradicate unethical and cruel puppy farms.

All new puppies will now need to have a breeder identification number, known as a Supply Number.

We are urging people to only buy dogs with a valid Supply Number whether they are searching for a dog at a pet shop, from a professional kennel, or through an advertisement.

“The existing floating walkway can now be used to its full potential, with two lanes now on either side,” Mr Williams said.

“The walkway has proved popular at this location as it allows boaties to have the combined use of the boat ramp and floating walkway to launch and retrieve their boats in a quick, safe and ordered manner.”

Mr Williams said contractors, Australian Marine and Civil, have completed the works ahead of schedule with the additional lane on the south side of the boat ramp now operational.

“Maintenance dredging works are also on the radar to remove a sand shoal build up off the ramp at Bellara, improving access for launching boats.

“The dredged sand will be used for beach nourishment on nearby Sylvan Beach with works expected to start in late June.

“The State Government recognises the importance boating and fishing plays in the lives of this coastal community and is committed to providing improved facilities.”

Funding for the upgrade works was provided through the Queensland Government’s Marine Infrastructure Fund.

The supply number can then be used to find information about the breeder using the new online Queensland Dog Breeder Register.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Bill Byrne said this was a major change for Queensland breeding.

“Previously there was no way to identify breeders,” the Minister said.

“Now we will have a tool that we can

The State Government is also working closely with the RSPCA, Dogs Queensland and the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission to develop a new set of standards for the management and care of breeding dogs in Queensland.

Known as the Queensland Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Breeding Dogs and their Progeny, the new standards will be regulated under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 and will be mandatory for all breeders of dogs in Queensland.

Any concerns about the welfare of animals in Queensland should be reported to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 or the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL. For more information about the Queensland Dog Breeder Register or animal welfare in Queensland, please visit www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au.

Bribie Island Classic Boat Regatta delivered a full weekend program. The beautiful vessels were seen stopping at Toorbul for lunch and cruising the stunning waterways of the Pumicestone Passage.

Beachmere Scouts

Suncoast Lynx Under 19s Netball Team gave it their all and achieved a draw 38—38 against the Brisbane East Tigers. I made a donation to help support the club and team members, as they struggle to pay for everything they require themselves. They are in 3rd place in the state competition, well done.

Our Maroon team was at Parliament House. I invited members from several of our local sporting clubs, to bring along Jersey’s and footballs to be signed by each member of the team in the hopes of raising much needed funds for their respective Clubs. NSW- We always come back!

St Michaels College Caboolture held a morning tea fundraiser for Cancer Council Australia. It was a very successful event that was well attended by families.

It was excellent to see all the students participating in the event by wearing the cancer council symbol of yellow daffodils, I made a donation.

Toorbul Rural Fire, held an Open Day for the local residents. Lachlan Wright made an appearance with his award winning display of Lego Fire Rescue Vehicles. Well done to all organisers involved that set up the event, it was a great day. It was great to see the Neighbourhood Watch members and Crime stoppers there.

LEARN TO MAKE MUSIC In recent years Bribie U3A has run Ukulele classes for different levels of experience.

The Ukulele is arguably the most played musical instrumenting the world. No matter where you travel you will probably find a Uke group nearby. It may also one of the easiest instrument to learn, and clearly there is tremendous fun that can be had from this little piece of wood and strings.

This explains its universal popularity and why former student Richard Alan has offered to run a new class to introduce absolute beginners to its delights next term.

Richard Alan says “ I hope to help others get the same enjoyment from playing their Ukulele as I do. I recently took my Uke with me on holiday to Norfolk Island was delighted to be invited to play with along with a social group there. The instrument

UNDERSTANDING PLANTS Hazel Beneke retired from Teaching and Biochemistry some years ago , and has been a Tutor and Student at U3A in a wide range of subjects over recent years..

She is a keen gardener and bush walker and has offered to start a new class for people interested in Plants , but don’t actually know much about them.

Hazel says “The class will learn about how plants work and how they can be identified, how plants reproduce and why they grow in some places and not others, and why are there so many shapes of leaves, and different colours and textures.

Students will learn about the relationship of plants to Air, Climate, Soil and Water, and what plants are edible and can be used as natural medicines.”

These new classes will be held on Mondays from 1pm.to 2;30.

OPEN YOUR MIND TO FASCINATING FACTS. Hazel Beneke will also run another class that was popular last year, for those wishing to improve their general knowledge and global awareness..

Each week there will be a Question and Answer session where students will work together in teams to try and answer a range of questions on interesting topics..

Hazel says “ We will deal with matters of Global Factual Trivia that will be both educational and stimulating for the mind.

It is not about knowing all the answers, it is about sharing knowledge and learning some new and fascinating things each week”.

Understand Plants or World Trivia with Hazel Beneke These Trivia Classes will be held on Mondays between 11am and 12;30 UNDERSTANDING THE MIDDLE EAST Another inspiring new tutor at Bribie Island U3A is Dr Gloria Gordon who recently conducted a popular and informative course on 20th Century Russia and the Soviet Union.

She now plans to offer another course in Term 3 to discuss the complex historical and current relationships in the Middle East.

Gloria’s career as a university teacher and researcher includes a range of

Unravelling Middle East complexity with Gloria Gordon International Relations areas from the Communist States and the Middle East, to Indigenous Australian Studies.

Gloria says “Students in my new class will gain an understanding of the artificial nature of many of the so-called “nations” in the Middle East which, combined with the many religious and ethnic allegiances of the people, contribute to the current situation.”

This short course will focus on understanding the basic facts and issues and includes discussion of various historical issues and current news scenarios.

The classes will be held weekly on Thursday afternoons at 1;30pm at the U3A centre.

All these new classes, plus more than 100 ongoing classes, are open to all local residents for just $2 per class. .

Happily, Never After

We all want that Fairytale of Happily Ever After and some are lucky enough to find that. Some look for it, but never find it. Others end up in an unhealthy relationship, because in the beginning, their partners held up, what can only be described at best, a false front. Only after the whirlwind courtship and perhaps a beautiful binding commitment like marriage, do we really see our partner for what they are. It doesn’t happen overnight, it sneaks up on you like slowly being wrapped in a single strand of spiders’ web, at first you just try and brush it off, and then one day you find yourself so wrapped up in the web it is almost as if you are inside a cocoon waiting to become the spiders next meal. The often sad realisation of this is probably one of the most confronting and soul-destroying discoveries you will ever make.

This is just one Woman’s view of how loving a Narcissist nearly destroyed her life, her family, her friends, her job and her sanity.

The cracks started to appear in this relationship just before Jess married James, she brushed it off thinking it was just pre-wedding jitters. After all, it happens to Brides, why not the Groom?

James began to accuse Jess of secret rendezvous with men and only after contacting the accused and Jess’ close friends to find out the truth, would he be remorseful. He would then shower her in gifts as if to win her back, and things would be good for a while.

James became quite hurtful. He blamed her for things she had no control over.

He distorted the truth. He became angry, demeaning, demanding and harshly critical. She was always told to better herself, she wasn’t earning enough money, she was frumpy. He began to tell her what to wear. He always wanted to know who she was talking to on the

phone. He would check her phone bills, or worse hide them and she wouldn’t know until the phone company sent her an overdue notice. He would hack into her social media accounts. He wanted to know where she was at all times. He would turn up unannounced at her work.

It seemed she couldn’t even go to the bathroom by herself, he would always find a reason to enter while she was in there.

He would promise things, things that he knew she wanted, but there would always be something, some excuse as to why it would never happen. And it would always be her fault.

And the cycle would continue. Blame, hurt, accuse then win back.

He blamed her for the things he did. The broken promises, the accusations and the emotional and verbal abuse began to take its toll. She began to question her own sanity. She began to think she was in fact crazy.

Family stopped visiting, friends stopped calling and life became lonely. Your once bubbly personality has almost gone, you question yourself, you begin to believe you are hopeless. You stop meeting friends for coffee dates. You begin to doubt your own judgment. You begin to feel guilty about things you may or may not have done, thought, said.

These are things that Narcissists do. In public, they will love you like there’s no tomorrow. In private, it is hell on earth.

It is a really hard situation to be in. One that will not change unless you make it change. You don’t want to admit that the person you fell in love with, the one you made plans to spend the rest of your life with, the one that can be so loving and make you feel so special, can also be so damned horrible. But you stay. You stay because you love them. You stay for the sake of the children. You stay because you know what they can be like. You stay because you want it to work. You stay because you promised to love for better or worse. You stay for a thousand reasons.

But mostly you stay because you are afraid. Afraid of what? You stay because you are afraid of failure.

BURN THROUGH WINTER

I fell a bit ridiculous writing this now as I sit in a singlet top with the temperature outside a balmy 26o but it has to be done because Winter is Coming. Yes, even on days when it’s hard to imagine that Bribie even has a winter, our bodies know it should be colder soon and so our bodies tell us to do things to get ready for winter like eat big stodgy meals and deserts because we just must store lots of fat! Yep, that’s the message your body is muttering to you right now.

It’s a biological fact, it doesn’t matter where you live, your body is making sure you are prepared for a blizzard that will stop you leaving your cave and hunting down a 5mtr tall man eating marsupial to fricassee into a tasty treat.

Of course we don’t have blizzards or man eating marsupials, although I’m sure I saw this bloke at the mall the other day that looked closely related to a man eating marsupial…. Anyway, as the closest thing we have to hunting for food in blizzards is the morning crowd on Saturday at Aldi, we really don’t need to store extra fat to survive because now food is pre-trapped inside plastic with any fight it had mechanically removed.

Even if you sit and lecture your belly button for hours on end your body won’t believe this, so we must be smart to scientifically proven gain of approximately 2kg per person that happens over winter.

So here comes the long dark months, where we feel sadder and slower and want to cover our bodies to become large blob like objects without shape or form. We all look soft, squishy and padded in places where we definitely shouldn’t look squishy and padded. We wear fake fur to keep us warm

when we should moving like real animals to create our own heat to burn those excess stodgy food calories that we feel we must consume to “comfort” us all the while hibernating from the imaginary Bribie blizzard.

Ahhhhh but how comforted are you going to feel when you peel away the padding in spring and discover that those enormous squishy bits weren’t your clothes! Suddenly you are facing a mirror and seeing your own soft, squishy and over padded body, that’s transparent white from being kept under cover. Wow I bet you can’t wait to show that off in spring!

So what do I do??? I hear you say…. Ahhh small transparent squishy one, let me tell you that there are amongst us the clever ones and you can become a clever one too!

These geniuses know that the absolutely perfect time to exercise is in winter! Not when it’s time for the beach, not when spring springs and not when it’s too hot to move in summer because by then its wayyyyyy tooooo late.

Noooooo, the right, smart, bestest ever time to exercise is NOW! While your body is doing its best to double in size you should be moving more and enjoying the internal warmth you get from exercising. Turn those squishy bits into bits that you will want to flaunt as soon as your thongs are dug out for spring.

And don’t forget those winter blues, exercising now will stop those blues from dragging you into a fog of unhappiness and excessive comfort food, exercise and eating real food that keeps you warm and full of energy will make you happy and healthier right through winter or you could just start saving for new larger clothes for next spring.

Senior Gentle Exercises With A Ball (or cushion) Before You Start!

Use a stable high backed chair. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off.

If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop!

Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises.

Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new.

You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are done using a small light ball or a Cushion Take each exercise slowly and carefully If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

BALL TRICEP EXTENSIONS

Use a stable chair for support – but do not lean as chair may tip or slide Sit tall in your chair and raise the ball straight above your head Keeping your arms up, bend your elbows as you lower the ball behind your head.

Then slowly raise the ball until it’s back to its original position above your head Only do as many as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

BALL LEG SQUEEZE

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall and keep your feet comfortable apart Place the ball or pillow between your knees Using your knees, squeeze the ball for 6 seconds and then slowly release (but don’t let the ball fall).

Repeat slowly, only do as many squeezes as you feel comfortable doing up to 15.

Rest

BALL BACK REACH

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall in your chair and hold the ball out in front of you.

Slowly stretch your arms forward to move the ball away from you like you are handing the ball to someone. You will feel a stretch across your upper back Return to the starting position.

Repeat slowly reaching out only as many times as is comfortable for you doing up to 12.

Rest

BALL ARM AND CHEST SQUEEZE

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall in your chair and hold the ball out in front of you.

Hold the ball in front of your chest with your elbows pointed straight out.

Squeeze the ball between your hands.

Keep squeezing for about 6 seconds and then relax Repeat slowly only do as many squeezes as you feel comfortable doing up to 12.

Prepare Naturally for Cold and Flu Season

Cold and flu season is upon us, but how can we avoid it? The key to reducing the incidence, shortening the duration, and reducing the severity of winter colds and flu is to strengthen your immune system.

The common cold, otherwise known as acute rhinitis, it is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. Symptoms can be sore or scratchy throat, runny nose and nasal congestion, sneezing, cough and a mild fever. It is highly contagious and the risk of infection is increased by poor hygiene, poor immunity and lack of vitamin D, as well as close contact with someone suffering from a cold. Viruses involved are commonly rhinovirus, adenovirus, influenza virus and parainfluenza virus. Complications can include a secondary bacterial infection resulting in further mucous discharge, acute sinusitis, sore throat, bronchitis, strep throat, tonsillitis and otitis media (ear infection).

The flu is a more serious lower respiratory infection that is caused mainly by the Influenza A and Influenza B viruses, which can mutate. New strains are constantly appearing. Complications can include pneumonia.

Australian Navy Cadets TS Koopa – Bribie Island TS Koopa – Annual Inspection 2017 On Saturday 13th May 2017 TS Koopa hosted Flotilla Commander LCDR Joyce Kennedy ANC to conduct her Annual Inspection.

TS Koopa has been awarded Most Improved Unit for the past 2 years and Commanding Officer LEUT Jane Reptik, staff and cadets have their fingers crossed that this year will be the year they bring the Best in Flotilla Award home.

The Commanding Officer said that the unit continues to grow and be recognised in the Community, for the fourth year running we have been recognised in the Longman Awards for our contributing to youth and this year we were a nominee in the Volunteering Queensland Impact Award. The Cadets will also be competing this year in the annual Cadet games run by PCYC Sandgate, which they won last year. We believe the training ship has one of the best training & activities

programs in the country. Our cadets will be undergoing Adventure training at Tree Tops challenge next month and will be training in advanced leadership skills at a camp later in the year.

Our Annual Inspection went well with some 80 guests attending to watch our cadets go through Ceremonial drills and a number of practical training exercises.

Adherence to safety is a major issue on all our activities we weren’t surprised when the Flotilla Commander through a couple

of emergency situations to us. The cadet enjoyed the experience, we actually had to explain to parents that it was only an exercise and a part of what we do on train their cadets.

The Ceremonial component saw the unit supported by the Queensland national Serviceman’s Pipe band, which is always a great pleasure. They donated some drums to the unit, which were very well received by the cadets During the ceremony we recognised several promotions. TS Koopa is pleased to announce our two newest Cadet Petty Officers: PO Deon Rayon and PO Ty Mc Donald. Our newest Cadet Seaman Allana Jorgensen. Bribie Island ambulances given the green light Priority access for Emergency Services vehicles on Bribie Island Road at the Beames Road intersection is now in place after new traffic signals were activated today (25 May).

Community incorporated safety improvements at four intersections including Lee and Peel Roads, Aylward Road, Beames Road and Pinelands Way.

“By mid-2017, work at all four intersections will be complete, improving safety for all road users along this stretch of Bribie Island Road,” Mr Williams said.

“This initiative is funded under the Queensland Government’s $62 million Safer Roads Sooner program, which aims to address and improve known and potential crash locations on the statecontrolled road network.”

Leading economist and finance commentator Tom Piotrowski predicted interest rates to remain on hold for the medium term, and a solid Queensland economy for the remainder of 2017, ahead of his keynote presentation at the REIQ Aon Real Estate Luncheon on Friday, May 26.

The twin factors of lower than expected inflation and weak wages growth will influence the RBA’s next rates decision on June 2.

“Locally anchored inflation outcomes, coupled with weak wage growth means that the RBA is firmly on hold with domestic interest rates for the medium term,” Mr Piotrowski said.

He also said that while the regional

economy was undergoing “a range of conditions” the overall outlook for the Queensland economy was good.

“Spending and retail trade have both accelerated in recent times, after household spending picked up significantly in the second half of last year,” Mr Piotrowski said.

Tom Piotrowski predicted interest rates to remain on hold for the medium term, and a solid Queensland economy for the remainder of 2017 “Household spending growth in Queensland is likely to remain firm over the remainder of 2017,” he added.

An expert on economic trends, Mr Piotrowski said the political turmoil in the US was having an impact on world markets.

“The current political climate in Washington is creating a lot of volatility for the markets – but when you step back from that, the world’s biggest economy continues to do quite well,”

he said.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said while Queensland’s housing market was holding its own, growing around 3.5 per cent to 4 per cent a year in recent years, some good news on the economy would be welcome.

“Our growth is steady and sustainable, but the factors underpinning our economy are fragile. An uptick in wages growth, employment numbers, and population growth would provide stronger scaffolding for the property market,” she said.

EXTENDING QUALITY OF A bridge that had a story LIFE FOR OVER 50’S!

Stockwell, a well-known developer from Brisbane is busily responding to over a hundred enquiries from folk who are considering calling Solana - a new over 50’s lifestyle resort on Bribie Island, home.

It wasn’t a very big bridge, but it was a fairly old bridge and it had been doing bridge business for many years.

Bridge business was spanning the Numboo Neck, a long skinny patch of tidal sea water, in the East of the State, and providing a safe crossing for all the people who lived on an Island to the East of the mainland – over the years these people had become known as Numbrians. – and for all the people who lived on the fish factory side of the Neck – known as Mainlanders.

The Numbrians and the Mainlanders needed the bridge to travel about their country side, visit their mates and go about their daily business. But, they did not really appreciate their bridge. Or so the bridge thought. “ They don’t care about me. I am just a bridge, but what if I wasn’t here, then they would think about me, wouldn’t they ? “ And, of course they would think about it, because they DID need the bridge ; without their bridge, life would be tricky.

It was just an old wooden bridge, built on wooden piles and it had been across the Neck for quite a while, an old Numbrian, Kathleen Morrisbourne, thought she remembered the day it was opened. “ It was a nice sunny day and a man came up from the City. He made a speech at the Fish Factory end of the bridge, but none of us could hear it because the brass band from Orangeville made such a loud noise. They kept crashing their symbols and those of us at the Numbrian end didn’t hear what he said.

My Alfred said never mind because it was a nonsense speech anyway. We Numbrians gathered at the Island end of the bridge and had fairy bread with cup-cakes and tea. The Clerk came from the Orangeville Town Hall and said we would all become very important now that we had a bridge because it would open up the District. Well…….I must say that not much has happened yet. But lots of trucks and cars now drive over it and pollies from the City come and tell us that we are going to get a new bridge soon because we are important now. But look, I don’t know, I can’t remember, it was all so long ago. It was before the War, you know ? “ No one alive has ever seen it ! The story is that on moonlight nights, coming towards the bridge from the Fish Factory side you can see that the bridge HAS A FACE ! A great big face, with the road as its tongue and that it has sad eyes which look out from the tops of its pillars at the Fish Factory end. Others will say that you can hear the bridge sighing, late at night of course : one copper said he heard the bridge moan on the night that Billy Bentle smashed his GTHO Falcon into the Fish Factory end, killing himself and his father’s brown dog!

There were lots of stories about the bridge, because it had been in everyone’s life. There wasn’t a Numbrian who could say that the bridge did not mean anything to them, apart from Hawker Brown, who was a grumpy, old bugger, living on the Island. He always said , “ The bridge is bullshit ! We don’t want those Mainlanders coming over here to our side.

We would have been better off if we still had the punt ! Town bastards ! Wearing suits and talking flash crap ! “ Not too many Numbrians worried about Hawker Brown. In fact there was some graffiti on the Island side of the bridge that read, “ Hawker Brown is a cranky old coot ! “ Probably right.

But, the bridge knew. “ I have been spanning the Neck for a long time. What things I can remember ? They had a big party in 1918, jumping about on me, shouting about the “ boys coming home from France. “ Not as many came home as went, though ! Billy Bentle’s great grandfather

fell off me that night…showing off…walking on my rails. He drowned. No wonder, full of cider ! So was Billy when he smashed into my rails. I DID moan, of course I did ! It bloody hurt ! How would you like a speeding Falcon to smash into your ribs ? Eh ? “ Young blokes used to do mainys and blockies on Saturday nights, Fish Factory to the Island and back again- on and on they would go – most of the night into the early hours. They were all trying to impress the foxy young blonde from Apple Gum Street, Juanita Riviera. I have seen her in all their cars at some stage. One of the coppers at Billy Bentle’s crash said, “ She has lots of bloody friends, he was one of them ! “ I don’t know what that means…..I think she is a nice young lady. She is getting on a bit now, still crosses over each week, always smiling.

I like it when the kids come down on summer nights and go swimming underneath me. Makes me feel part of things, mind you, I get a bit nervous when they jump off me into the Neck ! Bit risky that.

I tell you what I don’t like. I don’t like the Snapperts. I don’t like the Snapperts when they come from the mainland side and sit under me on the Numbrian side. They come on Sunday afternoons and they bring their four dreadful children, their fat, rubbish bin dog and all the other junk. Old Man Snappert gets drunk and leaks all over my pillars whilst their eldest son, Duwayne, scratches his name in my pillar. I have seen all these things, I watch, I listen and take part in the life of people. I have seen them grow up, marry, have children become old and die……

But, I don’t think they care !

One day, some engineers and pollies came from the City and told everyone, from the Fish Factory to the Numbrians, that the Neck was going to get a new bridge !!

Soon.

It was just a matter of tidying up a few details about finance and stuff !!

Everyone was happy. They all thought it was time for a new bridge. The old one was pretty buggered. Knock it down and get a new one, that is what they were told – and they all thought – ‘ What a good idea ? ‘ But the bridge heard the words. ‘ I can’t believe what I just heard. These men wearing suits saying that they are going to build a new bridge and knock me down when they have finished the new one……but they need me now until they finish the new one !!

Well……I am not going to cop that !! I have had enough. ENOUGH !! ‘ On the following Sunday afternoon, the bridge over the Neck, from the Fish Factory to Numbria shuddered, swayed, twisted and broke in half !!

The Numbrian side of the bridge fell into the Neck with a huge splash, which washed back over a family having a picnic under the Numbrian side of the bridge. Mrs Snappert said she was devastated by the injuries to her husband and their dog, Prawn. “ My husband, Willy, was just standing by the pillar having a quiet leak, you know, minding his own business, when the whole thing broke down…..planks and water splashed all over him…..he has lost the family jewels !

You know ? And poor old Prawn, he is yabby tucker now !!

The Orangeville Council Chambers were a shambles. “ Jesus, it is like the bloody thing knew what was happening. “ said Shire President Rod Sparshot. “ It’ll be months before we can a new bridge.

Hope the bloody army can come up with a Bailey Bridge or something. “ “ About bloody time ! “ grumped Hawker Brown.

There are a wonderful group of ladies in our region who are giving back to the community in a very unselfish way. It starts at Hair 4507 & The Eyebrow Bar with Sonia, Tammy and Lorraine.

10 ladies from different community organizations in our region met last week to discuss a way forward from an issue that is very prominent in our region. Unfortunately, 1 in 3 women will experience domestic violence at some stage of their life.

Morton Bay region is in the top 3 districts in Queensland in relation to domestic violence. The aim of the campaign is to empower women to talk about and feel safe to report or receive support if they are experiencing violence in their community. CADA (Center against Domestic Abuse) said “These types of awareness campaigns are an essential component in highlighting the serious issue of violence against women and children.”

Hair 4507 & The Eyebrow Bar are currently working closely with CADA to offer their services to people who are experiencing domestic violence or family violence. They will help two ladies referred to them and their children from CADA per month giving them a pamper day in their salon. Not only will they get their hair done, they can also offer eyebrow waxing, eye lash tinting and facials, lunch also is provided and an essential pack to take home.

CADA and the ladies would like to grow and have as many salons involved in our region in the Hairdressing campaign they are kicking off on Bribie Island.

Applications will open on June 19 for sports clubs to apply for a grant up to $150,000 to upgrade or build new infrastructure or facilities.

MATTRESSES Parenting is often referred to as the toughest job you will ever have. Parenting children is an ongoing process of learning and change for both sides. Young children need guidance, limits and lots of love. Older children and teens still need these things but in different measures.

Some of the keys to successful parenting are: Be consistent. Have a few rules that are applied every time in a consistent way. As children get older, you will need to change these rules to be age appropriate. Be flexible within reason.

Pick your battles. Don’t fight over every little thing. Children need freedom of choice to develop responsibility. If you try to control everything they do you simply heighten their need to push against you. At the end of the day, we are trying to raise young people who can think for themselves and make good decisions when we are not around.

Be united. Whoever is involved in the parenting of your children needs to be united in how they manage things with the children. When children see inconsistency between parents or other caregivers, it confuses them and creates opportunities for them to really test the limits.

Make the limits clear. Review your family rules and expectations frequently and make sure your children understand what these are. You would hate to go to work and get into trouble for something you did not even know was wrong. We often expect children to just know things about family life without making these clear. As children get older, involve them in the process of reviewing family rules. If they have a say, they will be more likely to accept the rules.

Give lots of love and affirmation. A good amount of both will never harm children.

Affirmations and positive feedback are a very powerful way to shape behaviour. Most children will respond to this by doing more of the behaviour you pointed out. If you only notice them when they have done something wrong, the message they get is: I have to be badly behaved to get noticed.

I used to be physically fit. Used to. I wanted to make it to World Masters for rowing. But life was cruel and I suffered chronic tendonitis in my elbows. I gave up rowing. I gave up riding my bike. Heck, if I didn’t have to walk anywhere I wouldn’t. I literally gave up.

For 5 years I self-excluded from any physical activity and put myself on a self-proclaimed Fitness Protection Program. No amount of begging, pleading or cajoling from well-meaning friends could change my mind. Even when my regular Doctor sent me to a Cardiologist and I found out I had a congenital heart condition, I still would not exercise. I didn’t need to, nor did I want to.

And then something inside me changed. I don’t know why, but it did. Was it because everyone had stopped asking me to join them at the gym?

The pile of clothes that got banished to the naughty corner was growing and my wardrobe was shrinking. Was it because the bathroom scales were showing

numbers I had never seen before? Maybe I finally didn’t like what I saw as I stepped out of the shower on Christmas morning and parts of my body were heading South for the Winter and here we were smack bang in the middle of Summer. Whatever it was, I decided I would go to the Gym. Just once. Not that I would enjoy it. How could anyone enjoy exercising to loud music, getting all sweaty and gross and feel good?

The next day, my daughter waited patiently for me to put on my old sports gear, surprised that it still fit and off we went. I don’t think I have ever felt so selfconscious in all my life, well there was this one time…

I truly didn’t know what to expect. I expected people to point and snigger at the newbie trying to work out the contraptions for fitness, but it wasn’t like that. Nor has it been, ever.

That day, I tried every piece of equipment I could. No one laughed. No one pointed.

No one cared what I looked like. Not one damn was given. We are all there for our own personal reasons, whatever they may be. The music was pumping and for the first time in a long time, so was I. It felt good. I felt alive. I wanted more. I now have a gym membership and a Personal Trainer, who I see once a week. I slowly changed the way I eat. I handle stress and anxiety so much better than I used to. My self-confidence has improved; I am so much more productive. Five months in and my boobs are sitting right where they belong, my butt is getting toned, and I don’t have chicken wings for arms anymore. It is hard work and people are noticing the changes. It’s a work in progress. The most important thing is, I am doing this for me.

And I’m happy.

“A STEP THROUGH TIME” FREE EXHIBIT 14th June to 9th August 2017

What did our grandmothers and their grandmothers wear? Dresses made of lace and net with embroidery and trimming. Hats perched atop regal heads.

An outfit suitable for any time of day, for any oc-casion. Women who worked at women’s jobs, such as teachers, secretaries and telephone operators could be seen in skirts and blouses, with a jacket of course. At a social occasion such as afternoon tea, they would be seen in an pretty dress and an evening out would re-quire something a little more formal. Always there would be a hat. And gloves. And shoes with heels, worn with stockings. With the start of the war came strict rationing and women’s clothing took on a more military design.

After the war years came a period of transi-tion with the snug fit of Dior dresses to the colourful rock ’n roll style of the 1950’s. Men’s fashion was not as revolutionary as wom-en’s and went from suits with vests in dark blue, dark brown and charcoal with matching shoes and hats to more relaxed styles minus the hat. Take “A Step Through Time” and visit this free exhibit highlighting clothing from the 1860’s through to the 1950’s, located in the main reception area of The Caboolture Historical Village and treat your-self to a Devonshire tea or light lunch at the adjoining Red Hall Ca-fé .

The café, which prides itself, not only as a coffee shop, but a superb venue for a light lunch with a limited gluten free menu, is open every day from 9am to 3pm.

many attractions in the His-torical Village there is an entry fee of $15.00 , $10.00 concession, $5.00 for children 5-12 years and those under 5 years free.

Best Park Bestmann Homestead about 1880 courtesy Bestmann family 1865: Henreich Bestmann and his family arrived in Brisbane and took up a selection at Toorbul Point, arriving by sailing boat. They called their selection “Best Park”, about one and a half thousand acres where today is Godwin Beach and Beachmere. They grew oranges, grapes, potatoes and raised livestock. Artie Bestmann moved to Bribie Island as a bee farmer producing what later became the very famous and

popular Bribie Honey. He soon had a sideline meeting the ships at Bongaree and in his punt bringing campers and hunters ashore, or taking them out to a ship, along with goods at 6 pence per trip. Bongaree was an unofficial transhipment point.

Simone Wilson Candidate for Pumicestone and Ros Bates are working to change legislation in Queensland on Family and Domestic Violence.

Last week, Shadow Minister for Communities, child safety, Disability services and prevention of family and Domestic Violence, Ros Bates & Candidate for Pumicestone Simone Wilson met with a group of local people discussing the real issues of Domestic Violence and legislation in Queensland.

Ros Bates is a Survivor of Domestic Violence herself, and was extremely passionate when she was speaking to the local community on Bribie Island, the issues we currently have in Queensland and how it has become a

major concern which is growing rapidly.

The Shadow Minister said, “there were more than 1600 domestic violence applications made in the Sunshine Coast region in 2015/16 in Moreton Bay Region alone which is up almost 300 on the previous year.” There were 1018 breaches of domestic violence orders happened that same year. “this is a 38% jump on the previous year.” she said. 56% of all DVO breaches were committed by repeat offenders.

Across Queensland the State Government is spending more than a $1 million a year on motels for 9000 DV victims, while ignoring private shelter operators.

Ros Bates said the “LNP recently delivered a key reform to DV policy and the courts will now have to give a reason if they make orders for less than the legislated 5 years. It now gives certainty and transparency to the process for victims and their families.” The LNP have also implemented sweeping reforms to Bail and Parole to reverse the presumption on Bail for DV related crimes.

Or even invest more money into the homeless.

When last surveyed in March this year, it was discovered that 5.8% of the Australian population (able to work -both physically and legally), are unemployed.

The government is providing countless jobs, yet the unemployment rate is still rising. Five point eight, out of one hundred, it doesn’t sound like much.

Though, when you consider the fact that we have almost twenty-five million people in Australia, does it really sound that small?

This isn’t an article about how you should help the homeless, nor is it about how you should create jobs. This article is for the people out there that are unemployed, with no valid reason not to be. They call it ‘between jobs’. If you are young, fit and/or intelligent, yet still don’t have a job, there is no reason why you shouldn’t. I’m not talking about those who are actively seeking work or those who have reasons as to why they can’t work – I’m talking to those who are rorting the system. Those who are leeching off the government. Those who choose to stay on unemployment benefits, rather than finding a job.

If you are without a job at any time, or if you know someone in that position, simply look at yourself and think about the funding you are receiving. Think about how easy it would be to get a job, even if it was just a temporary one to fill the gap. Think about what a difference it would make, if the money the government was giving you, was filtered into those who are living on the street. If you are ‘between jobs’, you are practically stealing money from the homeless. Next time you see an advertisement for needed jobs, don’t ignore it - go out and get that job. Help not only yourself, but those around you.

Help those who need it more. award and hope this inspires other teenagers across the Bribie Island community. Being a part of this great game, can really make a difference.

Centrelink funds the homeless (if they apply for support). In the major cities alone, here are approximately 105,000 people sleeping on the streets, without sufficient shelter, every night in Australia.

Not to mention the others sleeping in unstable or unsafe environments. If those receiving Centrelink funding for unemployment, despite being perfectly capable of finding a job, due to simply not trying hard enough if at all, were to get up and find a job, who knows how much money could be reallocated to helping those who don’t even have a roof to sleep under. Imagine how many rooves could be supplied with that funding. Countless lives could be saved if people stopped using the government as a resource to avoid working, countless people could be given a second chance, thanks to the actions of those who are currently ‘between jobs’ and have been for years.

The Evolution of Nintendo Consoles From the Game& watch to the Switch, Nintendo consoles has come a long way since 1980 when the first console came out the company has made twenty-four different consoles. Starting with the Game & watch which hit the markets in 1980 was created by game designer Gunpei Yokio, each game & watch featured a single game to be played on an LCD screen and an addition of an alarm, clock or both sold 43 million of copies. Games for the console where a wide variety but the most popular ones being Donkey Kong, Legend of Zelda and Mario Bros.

The game & watch console went of market in 1991.

While the Game & Watch series was the first portable console the Game boy really made the gaming market what it is now. The device features an LCD technology but unlike the Game & Watch limited stencil based display the Game boy’s LCD was pixel-based and featured four shades of grey. This permitted the developers of the console to visuals without restrictions of the “old-school” tech. After the game boy became a worldwide frenzy Nintendo released many other game boy models such as the Game Boy Pocket (1996), the game boy light (1997), the Game Boy colour (1998), the Game Boy Advance (2001) and the Game Boy Advance Sp (2003).

The Nintendo Ds was the next console to revolutionise the gaming consoles.

The Nintendo DS introduced a handheld system with two backlit, equal resolution screens, one on top of each other in a Game Boy Advance

SP-like clamshell design. The bottom screen is touch sensitive. The system is fully Wi-Fi compatible, both locally and over the internet. Like the Game Boy the Ds came in many different models over the years such as Nintendo Ds Lite (2006), Nintendo DSi (2008), and Nintendo DSi Xl (2009).

In 2006, the Wii was introduced to the world, the Wii is a gaming console that was connected to the television by cables. The Wii introduces a hand held pointing controller which detects movement in three dimensions.

Another notable feature the Wii offered was WiiConect24 which enabled users to receive messages and updates over the internet whilst on standby mode. The Wii made games very accessible and easy to play and made games like Mario Bros update a little bit, Mario Bros games became a worldwide frenzy when the company released New Mario bros, Mario Kart and Super Mario Galaxy 1&2. Like the Ds and the Game Boy the Wii turned into a chain of consoles like, the Wii U and the Wii Mini in the late 2010’s.

The newest Nintendo console is none other than the switch. The Nintendo switch was released on the 3rd of March 2017 (this year). The switch has two controllers that can be attached to the screen or can be taken out to play on a wider screen such as a monitor screen or a television. It can be played at home or on the go. You can play the switch with your friends or by yourself. The controllers on the switch are called joy cons, you can play with one, or two, vertical, sideways, motion controls or buttons. Games that came with the switch are The Legends of Zelda, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, 1-2 Switch, Just Dance 2017 and many more. Nintendo has come far.

This national event recognises the importance of early learning opportunities for children from birth to 8 years.

SUSTAINABLE GARDENING SOILS AIN’T SOILS PT.11.

Last issue we touched base on adding microbe food to water tanks and brewing different types of microbes with different types of food sources. We also mentioned how fish hydrolysate which is a product brewed in itself from fish waste and molasses and fermented with the help of lacto bacillus, is an excellent stimulator for aerobic bacteria and fungi and hence speeds up the process of breaking down that vital organic material in the soil profile.

So then, can we use these microbial brews on our lawns as well?

Well glad you asked! Absolutely. It all comes down to quantities in the end, as your lawn space would possibly need to have anywhere between 500L and 1000 litres of microbial brew broadcast via pump and hose for efficiency. So the bigger the garden and lawn the bigger the conquest! You can easily source a second hand empty 1000 litre IBC Bulky box storage container from local businesses that store bulk liquid on site and with just a few modifications by fitting an aerator pump and connecting some basic hose fittings you are well on your way for preparing to brew some serious aerobic microbe quantities indeed.

There are a few things to consider though as hygiene is essential, even the pros wash out the tank after every brew so as to not harbour any undesirable microbes that can populate diseases instead of preventing them. Also if your own immune system is not the best then take care when brewing and follow all Health and Safety precautions when mixing and decanting the brews.I also mentioned in the last article how chlorinated water kills microbes, so after cleaning your tank between brews, you will need to aerate your water again for another 30 minutes to dissipate any chlorine residues from the tank before applying any fresh microbes for brewing.

Interesting to note that most lawns seem to prefer and respond well to a dominant bacterial microbe brew and molasses is one of the key ingredients for aerobic compost tea as the sugar feeds the microbes in the turf root zone. Also interesting to note is that grubs in general dislike molasses, so its possible to achieve a double positive effect by feeding microbes and keeping the lawn grubs at bay, although with molasses, a little bit goes a long way as too much causes the brew to really froth up.

When formulating fungal brews to feed microbes around plant roots in the soil in general, then worm castings and worm juice is one of the major ingredients to add in an aerated tank as these microbes will flourish in the soil profile and respond well with applications of fish emulsion which really stimulates healthy fungal activity.

Winter is here with the arrival of June with colder nights not a moment too soon!

Winter has now officially arrived and on cue with these rather sudden colder mornings of late, but still pleasantly warm in the midday sun and as a result the weeds seem to be thriving in a few lawns and gardens around the place. Normally when planning to implement a control weed spray, it can be hard enough to initiate when dealing with the wind and moisture all about here on the coast but timing just got a little more tricky now with the morning dew covering lawns until mid morning these last few days. So its not a good time to apply selective herbicides until your grass has totally dried off. That includes your weed and feed hose on types too! So the mantra for gardening in June, is to Assess ,Treat, Monitor and Have a Hot Cuppa!

Late Autumn flowering Sasanqua

The Camellia sasanqua is the most versatile of all the Camellias and is the one to plant in the landscape in our coastal areas and subtropics.

They flower in Autumn and early winter and are a sight for saw eyes in deed. They can be used as an informal hedge and they come in a wide variety of form and size. Some common low growing cultivars from 0.5 to 1.5m tall are: ‘Yuletide’ and ‘Dwarf Shishi’, some medium cultivars that grow from 1.5 to 2.5 m tall are: ‘Star Above Star’ and ‘Early Pearly’ and some tall growing 2m to 4m tall specimens ‘Hiryu’ and ‘Plantation Pink’.

They have a musky fragrance and the Sasanqua are very sun hardy. Love composted manures like dynamic lifter or blood and bone and are water wise when established.

So many cultivars its hard to choose!

Great time to reassess your garden now if you have the time while walking around with your morning cuppa and noticing any dead or diseased limbs of plants that could be cleaned up or removed before the cold weather really bites. With uncertain weather conditions and the promise of colder temperatures still to come, I still prune and shape and hedge as part of my ongoing business concern but even with my experience in the field I still have to plan maintenance activities in winter with military precision as to try and optimise plant health at all times while minimising the spread of disease.

While most gardeners can prune most of the year with out sticking to the 45 degree angle pruning cut rule, now is the time to really consider practising this principle.

Why? Because moisture and dew are already sitting on your lawn till around 11.00 am in the morning and as a result your fresh naked pruning scars can rot and cause die back from excess surface moisture sitting on the wound over night. I use tree wound paint to seal larger pruning scars from the elements and also to assist in recovery and it really works a treat. It is especially good when trimming fruit trees that have become diseased as it prevents further injury or plant stress, especially around this time of year.

Its always good to apply some gentle tonics like fish, kelp or worm juice to the residual foliage after pruning to give your plants an added boost to carry your favourite specimens throughout the winter. When it comes to mulch, now is a great time to have a look and pull back any mulch that’s found its way around close to any trunks of your trees or plants in general, as any moisture trapped around the bark of the tree in winter can cause rotting and decay leading to serious fungal attack.

If you have citrus trees or passion fruit vines then you probably might have fruit that has ripened and fallen on the ground by now, so its also great hygiene practice to remove them daily before they rot and bring disease to your patch. Also time to program your irrigation now for early mornings in the dry spells.

“Dedicated committed coaches build great teams” Since opening their new clubhouse and facilities in January 2016, the Bribie Netball Club has gone from strength to strength. With the support of the Moreton Bay Regional Council and Queensland Government funding the club was able to construct new championship courts,

for everyone to experience netball. Kyllie said, “Dedicated committed coaches build great teams and we focus on building teams in a fun and friendly environment.”

Kyllie said, “We are very grateful to our life member Heather Ball for her hard work and dedication in support of our club especially in developing our new facilities.”

Bribie Netball competes within the Caboolture Netball Association and has three age-groups, 5-6, 8-10 and 1117. In 2017, Bribie Netball registered 106 players and 13 coaches. Like most clubs, Bribie Netball enjoys celebrating success particularly their 2016 Grand Final Win and they look forward a positive

While it may be interesting for the average hard-working family to hear just how much money is paid to a cricket player, most Australian Sports enthusiasts care little about Australian Cricket Industrial Relations pay disputes or who plays in the upcoming Ashes Series, One Day Series or Twenty20 Big Bash shootouts. What the punters want is solid entertainment, lots of runs, fast wickets, respectful sledging, live music, hot chips, fair priced family tickets and Ashes success - simple really. Over the past two years, the Big Bash Twenty20 Series has established a new brand of entertainment and exposed Cricket Australia to a greater pool of cricketing talent. Let’s share the money across more players and at the same time re-re-write player contracts and pay a fair wage for a fair day’s work. Perhaps the Australian selectors could choose 40 players this winter and trim this number back to fifteen in October before England arrive on our shores. It may be also timely in to re-structure the Australian Cricket leadership group and limit the tenure of an Australian Captain and Manager to three seasons. Forgive my ignorance, but It smells as if there is too much money in the Cricket Australia Bank – why not pass the surplus onto regional schools and clubs for better equipment, facilities, water tanks, grass seeds and more hats and sunscreen. The Gilligan sisters (Kathy from Kingaroy and Linda from Rockhampton) catch fish at Bribie jetty on homemade line . It’s been a year since Kathy lost her husband of 50 years and it has been a very sad time so she and her Friend headed to Bribie Island for a couple of days to cheer themselves up.

They forgot their fishing lines so bought a $2 line each at Bargain Centre and a $3 box of fishing hooks.

They found some old sticks outside their motel room for a rod and some little rocks for sinkers – put them together and headed to the jetty.

All the fisherman stopped and had a laugh about their fishing rods.

The people of Bribie were amazing and the girls never laughed so much. Scotty from Ningi Ambulance helped them thread their lines and they conned the last bit of bait from him. –Marine’s and Parks were amazing as well. And their new mate at the bait shop was a real grumbly barrel of laughs. They stayed at Bribie Island hotel straight across from the jetty and the service was tops.

The girls would like to thank all those they came in contact with for a wonderful time. It was them who made their stay so enjoyable.

Be warned! they are coming down again next year to do the same thing all over again.

Up There As we approach the halfway point of the season, the AFL would have to be happy with thirteen out of the eighteen sides having an opportunity to play in the September final series. JULY FISHING REPORT TIPS FOR SURF The weather has been perfect for getting FISHING out and doing some fishing and we certainly have had some great catches throughout the Passage and out the front of Bribie Island. There are some great places throughout Bribie to do some great fishing with the family. The bream have been well and truly on the bite with some good sizes being caught at White Patch, Normans Gutter, Avon Wrecks, Bellara, Red Beach and Skirmish point the best bait is Prawns and Live Blood Worms.

You can also hook onto some Flathead in Ningi Creek, White Patch and the Bellara Boat Ramp the anglers are using squid and Chook Gut for bait. The best place to catch a feed of Whiting are on the Surfside 1st, 2nd Lagoon as well as the campsites, Red Beach, White Patch & Bongaree you need to hook some Preserved Beach worms, Live Blood Worms on your line.

The Mud Crabs and Sand Crabs are still about Ningi Creek, Mission Point and Lime Pocket you will need some mullet and mullet heads. One of anglers hooked onto a Snapper at the Bird Cage using Cuttlefish they are also at The Ripples and Sandstone Point. You can also hook onto some big Blue Fin Tuna at the Brid Cage as one of anglers caught weighing in at 22kg on a lure. There are also reports that the Taylor are starting to show up in the passage near the bridge but still none over on the surfside should start to flow through over the next couple of weeks you will need some pilchards. Dart are on the surfside at 1st, 2nd Lagoon and at the campsites preserved beach worms being the best bait.

With weather starting to cool down and the school holidays fast approaching make sure you get in early to book your campsites on the surfside as they are filling up real quick and don’t forget if you are needing a beach permit every month we are having a bonus when your purchase a beach permit for your vehicle you will go into the draw to win your money back for your beach permit we will be drawing a Weekly and Yearly every month so come and see our friendly staff and go into the draw.

Please remember that fires in our National Park Camping area are only to be lit in the fire pits supplied by National Parks and you must take your own firewood which is also available at Gateway Bait and Tackle.

When driving along our beautiful beach be aware that there are speed limits that apply while driving on our beach and on the inland track.

READING A BEACH The secret to successful fishing is primarily the ability to read a beach by water action, colour and current. This is best achieved from a high vantage point with a pair of polarising sunglasses on, before venturing down to commence fishing.

As you look at a beach, you will discern darker shades in the water where the waves do not break. These are an indication of holes or gutters where larger predators like mulloway are likely to be hunting, waiting for smaller fish to be swept past.

A wave breaking off shore is often due to a shallow point, sandbar or reef. There will sometimes be calm areas on these bars where small fish seek the shelter of shallows, and flathead lie in wait along the drop offs. Rips can be found where waves change direction and the water flattens or swirls.

Tailor like to hunt along the edges of white water. Bigger fish less concerned about shelter are in the clean water away from the zones where the sand is being stirred up as it may agitate their gills.

Peak times on beaches are controlled by tide and daylight. At dusk or dawn, regardless of tide, there is often some action. A high tide with either of these times is the perfect arrangement for fish to feed.

Other than dusk or dawn, the optimum fishing period often occurs during a change of tide. Most anglers prefer the change at the top of the tide although there are beaches that are most productive during low tide, especially when it brings the gutters close to shore, forcing small fish into them and into the waiting jaws of a predator.

BAIT Pilchards, garfish, bluebait, whitebait, squid, pipi, beachworm and sandworm are commonly used baits.

Anglers wanting to hook bigger fish prefer big baits like fillets, fish heads and squid heads.

A small nylon bait board is one of the handiest items you can take, as it can be difficult filleting a fish or cutting a squid strip on sand.
