Welcome to issue 14 of the ISLAND and Surrounds Community Newspaper, the only independent newspaper in our region.

The weather in our region has been amazing over the last month with lovely sunny days and the average temperature being 23 degrees daily, this allows us all to get out and enjoy our beautiful waterways, hinterland and of course there is nothing better than to have BBQ’s with our family and friends.

Drive to and from our beautiful island is being ruined It use to be a nice drive to and from our beautiful island but is being ruined by reductions in speed limits and traffic lights to cater for the minority of road users using it. It was bad enough they reduced the speed to 80 but now stop lights. What a joke. Can someone tell me why they

didn’t put 4 lanes past the dump? They went to the trouble of expanding the turning lane into the dump so why not 4 lane it right up to the other 4 lanes. Does common sense no longer exist in our government anymore. I have spoken to a lot of people that live on the island and around the sandstone area and like me they are also astonished that you the government are catering for the minority again. When will they start to listen to the majority? All they have done now is congest the road with these lights. I am pulling up to the lights with no cars waiting there to go. What’s going on there? I am also sitting behind people that don’t understand the simple rule of “ keep left unless overtaking “.

Such a simple rule. They wonder why the likes of the Pauline Hanson and Donald Trump are getting voted in. He is a tip. They listen to the majority of voters. So a message to Rick Williams. Get out and talk to the people.

Instead of Wasting our money on traffic lights on bribie island road for the minority. I see that you you are putting traffic lights at Old Toorbul rd. again what a joke. (With 1500 signatures) bet the majority of those signatures where from the school. How about putting that money into four lanes all the way thru to Caboolture for the majority of road users. And before the people that live up these road write in and say how hard it was to get in and out of these roads and that there where accidents there. I say you would have known that when you moved to those areas and if we put a set of traffic lights at every intersection that had an accident we would have lights at every intersection. So please start listening to the majority. Make it a nice drive to and from our wonderful island not a car park.

Moreton Bay partners with community to improve health of Pumicestone Passage

Moreton Bay Regional Council today endorsed a plan which will see more than 30 community, industry and government organisations continue to work together to improve the health of the Pumicestone Passage and its catchment over the next three years.

The Pumicestone Passage Catchment Action Plan 2017-2020 has been developed in conjunction with Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the Pumicestone Catchment Network, and outlines 32 projects to be implemented.

The plan follows the implementation of the inaugural 2013-2016 Pumicestone Passage Catchment Action Plan, and will build upon the achievements and 36

projects delivered during that time.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said council was proud to continue its work with Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Pumicestone Catchment Network to continue to

improve the health of the important Pumicestone Passage and Catchment area.

“This action plan recognises the regional significance of Pumicestone Passage and the importance of a collaborative community approach to improving its health - between neighbouring councils, the Queensland Government, farmers, environmental groups, and traditional owners,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“Across the next three years, this plan will see a wide variety of stakeholders work together to deliver 32 projects aimed at improving the health of the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment area including taking steps to improve water quality and enhancing local habitats and biodiversity.

“Moreton Bay Regional Council will lead the delivery of four projects, jointly lead seven projects, and support a further nine projects in our communities.

“This will include taking steps to minimise any impacts on water quality in our region, preserving and enhancing local habitats and wildlife corridors, monitoring and managing water quality and targets and reducing the export of sediment to waters.

Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the Pumicestone Catchment Network were also recognised as a finalist in the ‘Government Stewardship Award’ at last year’s Healthy Waterways Award, for our partnership on the 2013-2016 Pumicestone Passage Catchment Action Plan.

“While there is certainly still work to be done, it is encouraging to see that water quality has improved.

“Council will also continue to support important, innovative projects like the restoration of shellfish reefs along the passage, following the opening of Queensland’s first oyster recycling station at Ningi earlier this month.

“Moreton Bay Regional Council looks forward to the next chapter of this important partnership with Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the Pumicestone Catchment Network and continuing our work to protect and enhance this valuable piece of our environment for future generations.”

“The Pumicestone Passage is an important environmental asset for our community and it’s imperative that we take every step possible to protect its health for the future,” Mayor Sutherland said.

The Pumicestone Passage Catchment Action Plan 2017-2020 seeks to deliver the following outcomes:

Mayor Sutherland said the implementation of the previous 2013-2016 action plan had delivered real progress in terms of improving water quality, restoring wildlife habitats and achieving more sustainable use of the catchment’s natural resources.

“Results from the 2016 Healthy Waterways Report Card were encouraging, with the overall health of the Pumicestone Passage rising from a D+ rating in 2010 and C+ in 2014 to a B+ in 2016, with findings of good riparian vegetation resulting in excellent stream health, excellent estuarine water quality, pollutant loads significantly improved from very high to very low and a 4.5 start rating for social and economic benefit,” Mayor Sutherland said.

The Pumicestone Passage is a unique waterway nestled in the lee of Bribie Island between Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast.

The success of the plan is dependent on endorsement by other agencies and stakeholders, and is expected to complement Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Total Water Cycle Management Strategy.

When you first meet Mark Roberts, you get the distinct impression that this man is on a mission to make things happen in life, not just for himself but for the community.

Bribie Island Road. As Co-owner of the Real Estate Business, RE/MAX Mainland Properties, Mark spends his life helping people search for acreage purchasing opportunities, however on this occasion Mark came across 100 acres of prime real estate incorporating one of Australia’s largest deserted prawn farms complete with pumping stations, settling ponds and three vandalised houses - effectively the owners just left everything in place

and departed. It is understood that the Prawn Farm was in production from 1988 for more than 16 years. Mark said, “Unfortunately the abandoned prawn farm was significantly vandalised over recent years leaving the three houses and most of the structures extensively damaged” he said, “On a positive note, the electrical infrastructure, foundations and concrete structures across the property are in reasonable order and the four large ponds are ideal for use as paddocks due to the in-built drainage and one meter of sand topping across each pond.”

Mark spent a lot of time studying the possibilities and potential use for this land and decided that it was in the best location to be developed into a Horse Park for horse owners, horse riders, trainers, Equine veterinarians and the community.

Mark said, “This is such an exciting opportunity. The property has everything you need to establish a benchmark horse park facility. The entrance and access from Bribie Island Road is outstanding and the entire structure is built overlooking the amazing view of the Ningi Creek – it is breathtaking.” He said, “There is even

Moreton Bay’s 2018 EKKA holiday Monday, August 13 will be Moreton Bay’s public holiday for the Royal Queensland Show in 2018.

During the public holiday, kerbside waste collections will continue as normal, however council’s customer service centres and libraries will be closed.

The 2018 Ekka People’s Day public holiday on Wednesday, August 15 is for residents and businesses in the Brisbane City Council area only and will be a normal business day in the Moreton Bay Regional Council area.

Moreton Bay’s show holiday for 2017 is Monday, August 14.

To coincide with the 2017 holiday, Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism together with council will host the annual Caboolture Family Fun Day with free rides, activities and stage shows at Centenary Lakes from 10am to 4pm.

This year, the organizers are planning to return to a more traditional Christmas Carols concert.

This will include a LIVE nativity scene which will feature the ‘Three Wise Men’ who will arrive to the stage on camels with donkeys & other live stock. A small choir along with local singers will also perform.

The stage will be filled with entertainment by children from both Aussie Kindies Ningi and Sandstone Point Early Leaning Centre, together with Step Up dance group.

Prior to the commencement of the carols concert, there will be plenty of free activities & rides for children, including a climbing wall, merry-go-round, chair-o-plane, trackless train, face painting & other fun activities. Camel rides will also be available for a small fee.

Volunteers play a vital role in our community and I have had the great pleasure in visiting serval volunteer organisations over the past few weeks.

I have had an opportunity to listen to the volunteers express what it feels like to be part of their organisations where they feel appreciated and gain a deep satisfaction in the services they are providing to the wider community.

Meals on Wheels Bribie Island, Bribie Island SES, Hairdressers with Hearts, Vietnam Veterans, VMR, Sandstone Point Lions, Veterans Support Centre and Donnybrook Sports Club volunteers go out of their way to ensure the people who require their assistance and support receive it.

‘Sticky Fingers Grill’, ‘Tangled Tatoes’, ‘Woodfire Pizzas’ and the local scouts group serving up some delicious hamburgers. Coffee & ice cream will also be available.

Aussie Kindies will also run colouring in competition prior to the carols with the entries then displayed & winners announced at the event.

The countdown has also begun on the first ever Sandstone Point Community Carols Christmas Lights competition, which is sponsored by the Lions Club of Sandstone Point. If you love decorating your home and want to win some great prizes, make sure you keep an eye on our next monthly carols update for further information. Entries will be accepted from Bribie Island to the Bruce Hwy.

The very popular petting farm animals will once again bring fun and joy as they are always a family favourite for both young & old.

A Christmas Carols event cannot be without a visit from the special man at Christmas, ‘Santa Claus’. The Lions Club of Sandstone Point will have a special booth set up prior to the concert where mum & dad can take photos of their children with Santa.

The Lions Club of Sandstone Point & the Sandstone Point Community Association, supported by the Sandstone Community Church, are very proud to, once again, be able to bring this family friendly alcohol free event to the local community.

Meals on Wheels for instance provide 120 meals per day to local people of various ages.

They also provide human interaction that in some cases would not normally be obtained due to isolation.

Our SES are an outstanding bunch who work in unison and somewhat like a well-oiled machine. The mateship they display is a pure inspiration, especially when it comes to the work they carry out in times of crises.

Our Hairdressers with Hearts who support families that are experiencing domestic violence go out of their way to make a difference and build self-esteem and self-worth when a person is in

complete despair.

The generosity and good-will of our local volunteers needs to be recognised and celebrated as these are ordinary people making a real difference in our Pumicestone communities.

I believe in community spirit and will work hard for my community to ensure all our local organisations and people in need are able to access the support they require.

Let’s work together to build a better Pumicestone where we are all valued citizens that make a positive contribution to the community we all live in.

It began with One…

Living in a Multi-Cat household.

It all starts off so innocently. You thought about getting yourself a kitten. You do the research and you find a breed that you like, and one that shouald fit your ideals about having a kitten in the house. I can see it now, you imagine this cute little fur ball that will curl up on your lap at night and play with its cute little toys and you live happily ever after. You begin to look for the perfect kitten. The one that fits into your imagination, you start researching breeders in your area and beyond, you begin phoning them, and there will always be something that holds you back. Either you don’t like their attitude or you simply don’t like their cats.

That was me. I did that, and what happened next is how I came to live in a multi-cat household, and it is nothing, I repeat NOTHING like I had imagined. I share a house with my daughter, we both have 2 cats each. So, yep, 4 in total. They all have different personalities and there is never a fight between them, some hissing perhaps, but never a fight. All our cats are ‘second chance’ cats. Not one has come from a ‘Breeder’. They have either been adopted from Welfare or from Foster Care. We visit shelters and sometimes, when time permits, we volunteer our time or we support the charity days and market days and we get to watch them grow.

Each one has a different story, some sad tale that depletes your faith in humanity, but at the same time knowing there are human angels’ eager to help rescue these creatures from what can often only be

described as deplorable conditions.

We introduced each of them slowly, each have their own ‘safe’ place. We were very mindful of their backgrounds and the sufferings they had. They each have their own toys, litter trays and are fed in different areas. It takes time, and a sense of humour and lots of patience. Lots and lots of patience. And here we are all living happily in the one house.

they prefer to sleep on ours or in a clean basket of laundry, and our house is littered with toys, some you will find hiding under the couch/bed/in the linen cupboard. Anything on the table is fair game and usually ends up on the floor.

Bring home a cardboard box and you are the almighty Queen, but only for a moment. We are slaves to the litter trays and just when they are all clean, that is the EXACT moment when they all need to go.

Gone are the days when you could leisurely lay in bed and read, now there is a little head that pops over the top of your book wanting attention, or one will be climbing on you and start pawing at your chest cause now is a good time to go to sleep.

Although we are outnumbered in the people to cat ratio in our house, we take ‘ownership’ very seriously. It is no secret that owning an animal is expensive with food, litter and healthcare, which was all taken into consideration before adding another life to this already overflowing household.

I remember the days of waking up and being able to yawn and stretch out. The days when you could fling the blankets back and stumble out of bed. Now my eyes open and I’m being glared at for disturbing the peacefully sleeping cat.

I’m sometimes afraid to yawn in case I end up with a swishing tail in my gob.

There is definitely none of this stretching out business as your feet are quite firmly pinned down by a heavy furry body, so you ever so slowly pull your feet up being careful not to upset anything. You know have when you feel the needle like claws go straight through the blanket and into your foot. You then wiggle your way up the bed and try to get out, just once I want to fling the blankets back, but I’m afraid of the wrath of the cat.

Call us the crazy cat ladies if you wish, we’ve heard it all before. It doesn’t matter.

I used to think that we saved these babies, but when they curl up on your lap and start purring, I KNOW it was them that have saved us.

Over fourteen years ago Beachmere had its own Police Station in the community.

Since its closure Beachmere has been subjected to random acts of violence, assaults and several burglary’s including break ins and damage to local business premises. Residents report calls to police have gone unattended, as well as lengthy delays when they do attend.

A recent move to have Beachmere attended by Bribie Island police, instead of the closer, and busier, Caboolture Police station, has created further problems.

At a recent Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) meeting and with the support of all levels of government, the Beachmere community agreed to unite and co-ordinate their efforts to demand an increased police presence in the area.

I believe that I still have so much more work to do. I am currently in negotiations to see Bribie Island Road upgraded to lanes, Beachmere Road upgraded, Pumicestone Road Flood ones fixed, Bribie Island Bridge although the current bridge is sound, we own the approach land on the mainland side but have purchased the land on Bribie Island side ready for the future development of the new bridge. We have currently commenced a parliamentary petition for a carpark and set down one at Banksia Beach State school. We need to ease traffic congestion on Sunderland Drive for the 6,100 residents that live there and provide a safe transit site for the children. In fact, I worked very closely with the LD Police and Transport as the Secretary of the Moreton Bay Tow Association and as the Secretary of the Sunshine Coast Tow Association to ensure that anyone doing anything wrong within this industry between oosa and Redcliffe was hauled over the coals. You can pretty much guarantee that life willnever go according to your perfect life plan, especially when it comes to exercising.

You can set yourself challenges and visualise yourself achieving them on a specific Sunday in October and then the very next day something dramatic happens and your plans go up in a puff of smoke, so you convince yourself that you were obviously never meant to do that half marathon or lose that 10kgs, ever.

Actually, No, that doesn’t mean you give up on that dream. So it didn’t happen on that specific day, or month or even year, honestly that doesn’t mean it will never happen. Look at me and my half marathon. I planned to complete my first one in October 2015, well that certainly never happened. 2015 was a pretty miserable year for me and my family and my plans got buried under stuff that was far more important at the time.

Yes, I was disappointed but also a little relieved! Yay! I had awesome reasons for not doing it! And I had awesome reasons for being disappointed and I could easily blame “life” and not lay too much guilt on myself, a perfect scenario for getting out of some hard work. But I really was disappointed in myself and so I would keep looking for ways to challenge myself, because it’s the challenges that shape us, and I’m not just talking about our bodies.

This year, like every year, I went searching for a fun challenge my clients might like to do to encourage them to reach a higher level of fitness than what they have already achieved.

This year I found “The Bloody Long Walk”.

This walk is 35kms from Shorncliffe to South Bank (yep, bloody long way) and is to help raise funds and awareness for research into Mitochondrial Disease and takes place on the 13th of August.

Well there are 13 members to our Fit Beyond 50 Team who will be conquering this 35km walk! Every one of them has been training to get ready to handle it and it should take about 6.5hours. (which reminds me, if you would like to know more or support our team the link is https://blwbrisbane-2017.everydayhero.com/au/ fit-beyond-50 So when it was suggested by one of our ladies that we should “warm up” with the Jetty to Jetty 21km half marathon at Redcliffe, it was a no brainer. Of course we would do it after all it was ONLY 21kms!

Ha! Look at me saying “it’s only a half marathon” weird eh?

We were the slowest on the course the whole way, but we did it and I cannot express how incredibly proud of the Fit beyond 50 ladies who proved to themselves that they really can do anything they put their minds to. We are even looking at the event next year so we can “better our times”. I’m really excited to be with our amazing team as we complete the 35kms of The Bloody Long Walk on the 13th of August (I will tell you all about it in the next issue.)

or year. I didn’t convince myself that “it wasn’t for me”, or that “I’d never manage that”. Unfortunately a lot of people give up on their health and fitness because it’s “not the right time”. Well, sorry to disappoint you but there never really is a “right time”. You will always be busy, stuff will keep happening, knees will ache and life isn’t perfect. But if really want to change your life you can, you just have to start and you will be amazed at what you can achieve in only 3 months.

So you saw them on sale and thought “I will use those” but do you know what to do with Dumbbells?

Dumbbells can be a good buy when it comes to exercise equipment, especially those that come in sets and range in weights. Using the different weights allows a progression as you become stronger.

Please always use a stable high backed chair and wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements stop!

Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned about these exercises or are unsure of your ability to complete them.

Have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises.

Please start slowly with each exercise until you become used to the new experience and while you are asking your body to do something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

Strong Arms help you lift things and YOU! With all the exercises below start with the lightest dumbbell and work your way up in weights. You can always increase the number of repetitions you do rather than the weight you are using. The result will be the same!

When the exercises work one arm at a time – think about your body, does one arm have better movement than the other? Is one elbow more stable/stronger than the other?

Take each exercise slowly and carefully especially if you use a cane or if walking and turning are difficult. If possible make sure someone is with you for support.

Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your strength.

So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

STRICEP KICKBACK

Use your kitchen bench for support, resting on one arm Hold dumbbell in one hand and tuck your elbow close to your body and keep your upper arm still.

Lift weight backwards and hold for the count “one, two” Resist the weight coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many “kickbacks” as you feel comfortable doing up to 15.

SHOULDER SIDE RAISE

Sit in stable chair that allows you to lift your arms out to the side Hold a light dumbbell in each hand Keep your elbow slightly bent Start with your arms by your side then raise your arms up to shoulder height and lower Repeat slowly, only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15.

StUse a stable chair – Sit up straight.

Hold a dumbbell in each hand and turn your hands so that your fingernails are against your leg.

People often talk about being “depressed” to describe feeling sad or down. It is quite usual when faced with a stressful event such as a relationship breakdown or the loss of a loved one to feel grief and sadness. This reaction only becomes called clinical depression when it is more intense, lasts for longer than would be expected, and includes symptoms such as crying all the time, feeling anxious, disturbed sleeping patterns and loss of appetite. Depression can be very frightening for both the person struggling with it and their loved ones particularly if they become suicidal.

Warning signs that someone might be suicidal can include:

•talking about feeling hopeless or helpless; •being socially isolated; •expressing fears of being a burden on others; •knowing someone who has died by suicide; •engaging in risky behaviours e.g. drug or alcohol abuse, reckless driving.

•having a recent loss e.g. relationship breakdown or loss of a job; •having previous suicide attempts; and •having a mental illness.

If you believe that someone may be feeling suicidal, let them know you are concerned and ask if they are thinking

So many people are wondering what they can do to build up their child’s immunity as they get sick all the time. General theory is to have a good diet full of antioxidants, proteins and wholefoods; reduce sugar and processed foods; as well as ensuring adequate intake of vitamins such as vitamin C, A, E and B vitamins, fish oil, beta carotene, olive leaf and probiotics, and to build up their immunity with immune enhancing herbs such as Echinacea, Astragalus and Andrographis. Lately I have been obsessed with watching awesome health documentaries on Food Matters TV and also have come across an online health summit called My Healthy Child, both of which have featured Andrew Saul who talks about children’s immunity with specific reference to asthma, allergies, fever, swollen glands, sore throats, ear infections and other conditions. According to Saul, the key vitamin to assist with all these conditions is Vitamin C. He advises the key to prevention is eating right and getting adequate vitamin intake.

about suicide. Talking about suicide will not make a person take action but lets them know that you are interested and allows them to talk about their feelings.

Encourage and help them to make an appointment to see their doctor to get further professional help.

The type of treatment used will depend on the severity of the situation. Therapy can help people to deal with problems of everyday living, learn how to manage difficulties, and understand the reasons for their feelings. Anti-depressant medication is sometimes necessary for the therapy to be effective. The medication ideally restores normal sleeping and eating patterns and reduces anxiety. Once the person is calmer, they are better able to begin working on the underlying issues.

Depression can affect all areas of a person’s life, so it is important to seek help as soon as possible. Depression can have a very negative effect not only on the person dealing with it but on those around them. Family members frequently find it very stressful and distressing to watch someone struggle with depression. It is often hard to know what to do or where to seek help. If you or someone you care for is struggling with depression you can:

Orthomolecular medicine refers to the prevention and treatment of disease through supplementation of nutrients, and was founded by Linus Pauling in the 1960’s. Saul makes reference to other advocates of this treatment such as Dr Robert F Cathcart and Dr Abram Hoffer. It is the safest and most effective treatment and he recommends varying the dosage per person and per condition.

Probiotics are important to building up your child’s immune system, and if antibiotics are required, ensure you take a good probiotic for 2-3 weeks after. A probiotic with 2-5 strains of good bacteria are most effective.

Vitamin C is also an antihistamine so can be helpful in treating allergies and asthma. Water will also reduce the effects of allergies. Dairy foods especially milk can provoke symptoms of colds and flu. The least reactive dairy foods are yoghurt and mature cheeses. Asthma can also be effectively treated with horseradish, cayenne

pepper, not too much of course, and chiropractic treatment.

Saul advises relief from ear infections can be achieved with hot compresses, extra vitamin A and vegetable juices containing beta carotene from carrots.

For nearly 15 years, my husband Steve and I have lived in the community raising our five boys here. We love the area and have been heavily involved with many schools, community groups and organisations.

We are seeing our crime rates rise and nothing being done to fix it. Small business owners are telling me that they are ready to give up because they are being strangled by a stagnating economy and red tape. It’s not good enough and our local member seems to be too busy fighting with local council over his personal property than helping to solve these issues.

I am committed to fighting for local people’s interests. Only a real economic plan will help us fund the schools and hospitals, properly resource our police and give small businesses the conditions they need to hire more local people. I understand our community – I have raised my family here, worked in it and I have been out listening to what residents need. With your support at the upcoming election, I will deliver the proper representation our community deserves.

Beachmere Arts & Music Festival held in the last week of June was a huge success.

The inaugural Beachmere Arts & Music Festival held in the last week of June was a huge success.

Workshops were held throughout the week culminating in a day of festivities on Saturday 1 July with food vendors, market stalls and creative workshops including tie die, candle making and circus skills filling Clayton Park with lots of fun. Face painting and henna tattoo artists created a vibrant atmosphere with entertainment from an Open Mic Competition.

Local band The Zephyr Project started off the afternoon, followed by The Dennis Sisters and The Counterfeit Umbrellas finishing the evening.

Inaugural Outdoor Art & Sculpture Winner was Beachmere resident Karen Davey-Thorpe who took out First Prize and the People’s Choice awards. The inaugural winner of the Photography Competition was another Beachmere resident, Jessica Culley. Jessica also conducted a very popular workshop on Drone Photography with a representative of CASA on hand.

When Mike from Little Mikes at Woorim was asked if he could prepare French food lunch for 4 people on Bastille day, little did he know his little charming café would be booked out, hosting 24 people for lunch. The word got out with Bribie Islands French Connection.

A walk through the New Zealand countryside after attending a family wedding brought Redcliffe artist Barry Stone the $5000 first prize in the 2017 Matthew Flinders Art Prize this week.

There were several interpretations of her work. Christine said she made it as a statement about environmental imbalance. The judges called it imaginative and stunning, with clever and thoughtful finish.

Barry received his award from Lawrie Leonard, Bribie RSL president at the gala opening night of the MFAP exhibition at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre on Friday before a packed house of 270 people.

Highly Commended awards of $500 went to Gloria Davies, from Bribie Island, for her detailed collage titled “ The Homecoming’, and to David Cross for his oil on linen work, Another Afternoon at Eet Cafe Blauwbrug, Amsterdam “.

Bribie island Community Arts Society functions & events manager, Julie Thomson, said the competition was boosted this year by a bigger prize pool and more vigorous marketing.

His oil painting titled “ Upper Clarence River Canterbury NZ’’, painted in one his favorite places in his native country, was selected by judges Michele Helmrich and Megan Williams, from the 253 entries this year.

They said his skilled use of light and colour in a simple yet captivating scene won their hearts.

Second prize winner of $2000 was Bribie artist, Christine Miles, for her mixed media artwork “The Cover Up’’, a series of newsprint-covered trees set in intricately plaited paper.

She said the MBRC, State Government and local business sponsors had been wonderful supporters of the event.

They were soon joined by Dan Lowe and Dave Moore, who are regulars at the session.

GOOD NEWS THROUGHOUT QLD AS VACANCY RATES TIGHTEN The REIQ quarterly rental vacancy rate data for the June quarter has revealed a tightening in inner Brisbane, as well as a tightening through much of regional Queensland, indicating a recovery is on the cards in the state’s weaker markets.

Brisbane LGA vacancy rate fell from 3.7 per cent in the March quarter to 3.3 per cent, moving from the weak to healthy range.

Inner Brisbane, which is overwhelmingly dominated by apartments, fell from its alltime high of 4.4 per cent in March to 3.5 per cent in the June quarter.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said Brisbane’s inner city tightening vacancy rate was a good indicator about the health of the market in the inner city.

“Brisbane’s inner city is showing resilience, with the balance of landlords and tenants relatively equal for the June quarter”.

“At 3.5 per cent, the REIQ classifies this market as healthy and this is when both tenants and landlords have reasonable expectations of their needs being met,” Ms Mercorella said.

Other regions in Greater Brisbane – Logan, Moreton Bay and Redland – remain in the tight to healthy range.

Logan tightened from 2.8 to 2.2 per cent, moving from the healthy range into the tight range.

Moreton Bay eased fractionally, from 1.6 per cent to 1.7 per cent, but this is still very much a tight market. Redland eased a sliver, from 2.5 per cent to 2.6 per cent, which means it is still a healthy market, but only by a hair.

“We know that the population growth and jobs in the southeast corner are, so far, sufficient to absorb the level of apartment supply coming onto the rental market.

The Gold Coast (1.7 per cent) and the Sunshine Coast (1.2 per cent) remained tight, which means tenants will continue to find it challenging to secure rental accommodation. Noosa tightened from 4 per cent to 3 per cent and this means the market is healthy.

Moving further north into our regional markets that have typically been weak markets for the past year or so, we see a general trend of tightening.

Toowoomba eased slightly, from 2.9 per cent to 3.2 per cent, however, this is still a healthy market. Construction work is still in plentiful supply in this region and it’s likely that the supply of accommodation (mostly units) has contributed to easing some of the tight conditions in this rental market.

Abolish Stamp Duty: The REIQ was disappointed this Government has chosen to ignore advice from a range of experts on abolishing stamp duty.

New campaign calls on parents to reach out for help

“Most parents love their kids and want the best for them, but there are times when it can be overwhelming and problems arise,” Mr Williams said.

“Financial stress, behavioural issues or more serious problems like domestic and family violence or drug and alcohol use can also come in to play.

A new $145,000 public campaign encouraging struggling families to reach out for help launched this week (July 10).

“Parents should not be embarrassed to say they need help. The help is out there and there is absolutely no shame in reaching out and asking for it.”

Member for Pumicestone, Rick Williams MP, said the new campaign urged families to reach out for help by calling 13 FAMILY to speak to an experienced family support worker.

Family and Child Connect services helps families with a range of services – from better budgeting and coping strategies to support with drug abuse and domestic and family violence.

“Families need help and support from time to time, especially when things get a bit tough,” Mr Williams said.

Services provided by FaCC are free and confidential.

“That’s why this new campaign is so important, so families know where they can turn to when they do need that support.”

No matter what qualifications are made, some politician, or one of their minders, somewhere, will assume that they are the subject of the comments….Cranky Lizard assures you all, that no politician is that important. And, if they were, they would not be reading this…they would be too busy sorting out the mess that has become our Nation, Cranky Lizard expects that they would be climbing out of their personal comfort cocoons rather than concerning themselves with what is commented upon in this august publication.

Behaviour and beliefs that have been accepted as norms for centuries in our communal life, are eroding or being challenged ; marriage, education, family values, gender, sexuality, patriotism, respect for authority and our institutions, are all challenged and in some cases ridiculed.

Why ?

Cranky Lizard believes that the continual media and academic attack upon Christianity as a binding institution in our community has had a significant effect upon this communal, moral decline. Cranky Lizard is a Christian, but does not speak in tongues or allows handfuls of taipans to munch happily away on hands and arms knowing that the Lord will protect.

Democracies seem to be in trouble. Regardless of where you look, sovereign nations that hold free votes for their citizens to elect men and women who will form the Nation’s Parliament and thus lead the Nation, are not able to obtain working majorities or do so based upon popular conceptions of pandering to identities.

Why the instability ? What is the source of the anger or frustration, because that is what it is. Why is the ballot box being bashed with baseball bats by frustrated and angry citizens, and mainly younger ones at that !!

Democracies, based upon the Westminster model or the Presidential model, rely solely upon informed citizens making informed choices on Election Day to choose a Parliament which will govern the Nation. Spiteful, uninformed voting patterns are becoming the norm ; citizens are using the ballot box as a form of punishment and, disturbingly, identities are being used as object of praise or objects of scorn.

The alternatives are dictatorships. Be they Socialist, Nationalistic or Dynastic [ as in North Korea. ] or lastly Communist, although there are really no Communist Dictatorships left, except perhaps for the People’s Republic of China which is stretching it a bit.

Do Australians want to live in a dictatorship ? Most say No; some , quite frankly would not know, but it is safe to say that the majority of Australians still value our freedom, thus our democracy, as people do in the UK and the USA which are the major democracies which affect our lives, one way or the other.

But we are struggling in our democracies – we are not able to secure stable Government, either from the right or from the left.

but still workable. Today Parliaments, particularly bicameral Parliaments are not…..and any astute observer can see that they don’t work because of spiteful, even malicious obstructionism, incompetence, illconceived populism or, dare I say it, just bloody, flat out ignorance !!

And you, as a sensible reader can draw your own conclusions as to who is what, in the above toxic cocktail.

Cranky Lizard accepts and easily understands that identifying a widespread social problem is simple : you look at the place and you know it is not working. That is not hard to figure out.

What is hard, is to suggest some sensible, some realistic, some achievable course of action to deal with this.

Because, it is a very complex matter indeed.

In seeking some sensible answers it is worth looking at what democracies are working and seek to establish why ?

Sovereign nations with Parliamentary democracies, governing under the rule of law, that seem to be working are Singapore, Israel, Poland, Hungary, Japan, maybe Tanzania, India and there are probably others you can think of…………

Common to these nations and axiomatic to their apparent success, is strong, political leadership.

As much as we want to, in Australia ,we do not have strong political leader-ship ; we just don’t.

Cranky Lizard will not be taking positions on strong political leadership because the answer is as plain as a dunny in the desert. But we can assume that central to our difficulties as a nation, is the lack of strong political leadership and, essentially, a dysfunctional bi-cameral Federal Parliament.

This institutional dysfunction opens a slight crack in the walls of our community strength and allows the creeping shadows of self-doubt to wind their sinuous way

Cranky Lizard is sure that the diminution of Christianity in our communities has had an insidious effect ; Christianity a binding fabric in our community tapestry , as are other major religions such as Hinduism, Judaism and Islam in their own manner and in their own communities. The weakening of Christianity has loosened the fabric which binds us and facilitates the moral decline in our general values.

It seems clear that the rudders on the various ships in our community fleet are suffering from either bent or broken pinions…leaving a confused wriggling wake behind us rather than a single unwavering line of common purpose.

We have a generation of young people, and Cranky Lizard abhors labels, but for the sake of literary clarity, we can say “ twenty something’s “ who by their actions, their comments and, in some cases, their disruptive behaviour, of which, they seem quite proud ; seek to lay blame for what they conceive as their comparative wealth disadvantage, on a generation of Australians they often refer to as “ old, rich, white men “ !

Cranky Lizard is neither old nor rich, but certainly white, from Celtic origins, proud of that, and will concede nothing to envy,

greed or conflated juvenile egos leading to outbreaks of mass stupidity, witness the ‘ Antifa ‘ phenomena and other such flash mob circuses.

When they were in their early twenties, the generation now rubbished by younger Australians, faced significant threats to our national survival, they fought, they died and they defeated the Nazis and the Japanese Tojo Axis, an evil like the world has never seen. When they were in their middle age they faced down global communism and the real threat of nuclear destruction; for the most part those two significant threats are defeated….yet still, there are many young people in western democracies who complain that old white folks have stolen their future.

Message for young people from Cranky Lizard : They did not steal your future people; they gave you one. Grab hold of the life you have, use it to the best of your capacity ; this is not a dress rehearsal…this is the only life you will have, bloody well use it !!!

The peaceful practice of any religion is not and never has been wrong.

Robust, respectful conversations and debate about ideas, are the core to the strength and resilience of our communities.

The idea of the common good is essential and fundamental to the benefit of our community and must prevail over the pursuit of selfish, personal gain.

And, all things being equal, the sun will come up tomorrow.

There are few better places in the world to live in, than Australia : it is wise not to take it for granted.

BRIBIE ROTARY GETS INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

At Golden Age Day Respite Centre, we have been providing care and social support for older people in our community for 30 years.

Our service is subsidized by the Commonwealth Home Support Program to aid with social and physical activity to those who choose to remain at home in the care of a loved one or on their own.

We support guests from Monday to Thursday each week so that older members of our community can benefit from wellness and memory enhancing activities such as Exercise classes, Trivia, Quizzes, Bingo, bowls & golf, Picnics, BBQs and Concerts.

Our program has for the past 30 years relied on the support of volunteers to assist us with social activities for our elderly clients. Our volunteers have traditionally given us support for a few hours a week between 9am & 3pm on a day of their choosing. Volunteers can assist for as little as 3 hours a week and will be supporting clients in a social way while they participate in the various activities we provide.

We are wishing to commence a new program where volunteers who wish to engage with

the elderly in our community can connect with specific guests of our service to provide them with companionship, support and friendship once a week for an hour or two each visit. If you believe this is something you would be interested in participating in please contact us for more information.

We can also assist those who are required to volunteer as a condition of their Centrelink payments.

Please support us as a volunteer by contacting Reception on 3408 2112 Our group environment provides a comfortable atmosphere where activities and outings are developed with a person-centred approach. The staff provide support and reassurance to each of our guests.

Carers are not forgotten either with care plan consultation, support groups and one on one consulting as required.

Our team understands that some people with memory loss can be unwilling to leave the home without the support of their loved ones and so a planned transition too solo, regular attendance can be developed to suit the needs of the person with memory loss and their carer.

Bribie Island Rotary Club has completed another remarkable year of achievements and received two prestigious awards.

Bernice Wilson completed her second successful term as Bribie Rotary Club President, and passed the baton to new President Jeff Eustace and his newly appointed Board of Directors.

In the past year Bribie Rotary donated more than $65,000 to local school programs, youth exchange, development and training, International health & disaster relief, as well as donations to several local Clubs and Charities.

As a result of these outstanding achievements Bribie Rotary has distinguished itself among 68 Clubs in this District, being awarded two prestigious Trophies for “Outstanding Services to Youth” and “Most Outstanding Club in District”.

These are both significant honours and recognition for the 33 members of Bribie Island Rotary Club.

Bribie Club has hosted a 17 year old Rotary Exchange student for the past year, Jacob Wolters from Germany, who has just returned home after a very successful year. Jacob was hosted by 6 different local families during his year on Bribie, and distinguished himself both at school and in several sporting endeavours. He achieved a bronze medallion in Surf Life Saving, enjoyed Rugby League and Union, and was a star player with the Bribie Tigers and under 17 Soccer teams. On the same day as Jacob returned to Germany, another Exchange student Pasqual Marti arrived on Bribie for his inspiring year in our community.

Pasqual comes from a village near Alicante in Spain, an agricultural and tourism area, blessed with great beaches. Pasqual is a keen Triathlon athlete and will be looking forward to participating in events in the local community.

Bribie Rotary have also sponsored and supported other Exchange Students from PNG to Brazil, and from Bribie Island to Germany.

Rotary continues its long running international campaign to rid the world of the crippling effects of Polio.

For 30 years Rotary have funded this International campaign with $1.7 billion, and reduced world cases from 350,000 a year to less than 20 in the entire world today.

All but four countries in the whole world are now declared Polio free. The campaign to ensure that every child in at risk countries receives the oral vaccine must continue until no further cases are reported. This effort to finally eliminate the Polio virus will require a further $1 billion, which has recently been pledged by Rotarians, country leaders and

lobal funding grants from 4 Rotary Districts in USA ,7 Districts in Australia, and the recipient Club of Boroko in PNG. Another youth initiative was for Kindergarten teachers to be brought from Solomon Islands to Bribie Island to learn and experience our teaching methods.

Computers have also been provided to schools in PNG with “Teacher in a Box” programs for remote communities.

Rotary projects deliver lasting benefits to communities at a local, national and international level.

Bribie Rotary has sponsored local youth to attend National Debates ,Mini United Nations gatherings, Youth Leadership Awards, Hearing tests, and a mini Rotary Club for local Primary schools.

Bribie Rotary annually recognise local employees with “Pride of Workmanship” awards, and support local Chaplaincy, Hospice, Naval Cadets and Surf Club.

This year has also seen major landscaping, facilities and informative historical signage erected at Rotary Park in Woorim.

“Bisley Farm” is an initiative of Bribie Rotary that provides disadvantaged aboriginal boys with basic farming skills, crop and livestock care, and provides an alternative and stimulating education to give them the best chance in life.

The boys raise cattle donated by Rotary on a farm in SE Queensland, and the meat is distributed through Foodbank in Brisbane to those in need.

The boys learn life skills and responsibilities, underpinned by the humanitarian service creed of Rotary.

In our local community Rotary conduct monthly Markets in Brennan Park, hold regular Movie Premiere and Trivia Quiz nights, annual High Tea and Race Day events , Christmas gifts for the elderly, and load containers with donations for overseas.

SUSTAINABLE GARDENING SOILS AIN’T SOILS PT. 13 Welcome to our latest sustainable gardening articles, written by a passionate local, for our equally passionate local gardening community living on Bribie Island and surrounding districts. Last issue I mentioned how on a holistic level, it is amazing how all things are seemingly connected in nature and when considering improving our soils in general, we should be targeting the soil biology in the first instance. It’s widely recommended in the Horticultural community that adding compost to your patch not only improves the soil structure, it can feed the micro-organisms and earth worms alike.

So then, when adding compost to our sandy soils here on Bribie island, we are literally blending sand, with organic matter which will assist the soil to retain moisture once irrigation is applied. The benefit of our new and improved blended soil is the fact that perfect drainage and fertility can be achieved, which is preferred by most plants in the landscape anyhow. This gives us an advantage, because if we can keep adding organic matter to our soil, natures biological army will be doing all the hard work for us, as it creates humus and improves the fertility of the soil in time.

When implementing a soil building strategy in the home garden, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the soil moisture.

The reason being is that soil moisture is the key to all microbial life and without an adequate supply, our efforts to creating a sustainable garden in sandy soil could be an uphill battle. These beneficial soil microbes flourish when there are luxury levels of moisture available. And just as critical, is the importance of mulching with materials that accept moisture and let any applied irrigation to infiltrate through the mulch and percolate down through the soil profile. If your mulch is too fine or compacted, the infiltration could be impeded and as a result, you may not capture any rainfall as the mulch could become water repellent or (Hydrophobic).

If you intend planting hardy plants like Pandanus sp. or other specially adapted plants that are designed to catch and slow the flow of rainfall it receives, then it helps to understand that covering the Pandanus roots with a compacted layer of mulch fines as part of your landscape creation, can do more harm than good. Due to the spiral shape of the foliage on Pandanus sp. and hence its referred common name; the Screw pine, the rainfall trickles its way down the specialised leaves and trunks landing on the surface roots below, which usually grow in pure sand. The Pandanus root system is adapted to perfect infiltration and drainage in nature. If this process is impeded by water repellent mulch then the plant has no chance to fend for itself as the mulch fines can form an impermeable layer.

When landscaping in general with sandy soils, the choice of mulch is paramount to your success, as the name of the game is to protect and feed the soil, keep moisture in the soil profile and allow moisture through to the soil surface and once this has been achieved, then fertilisers can be added, and only then, be of any real benefit. Blooming Winter Flowers in August Our July weather was relatively mild for Winter this year, with many blue-sky warm sunny days, except for those cold morning and evenings of course. Gardening in this weather is quite remarkable indeed. Going off to work tending to my client’s gardens first thing in the morning all rugged up from the elements, only to peel layer upon layer of clothing off as the sun’s rays warm the day ahead.

By late afternoon the layers go back on again, one layer at a time also. This weather has been great for gardening, so on my rounds this month it was great to see some winter flowers still on display for this time of year, this Tibouchina lepidoto ‘Alstonville’ is a stunner and was still flowering in late July, see image below:

Wow, I just love these Bromeliads. It’s not often you can use a tough plant in the landscape that oozes style, has vibrant colour and is architecturally sensational. Alcantarea imperialis can be used as a potted feature specimen or planted in groups to get that lush tropical feel.

The Alcantarea, ‘Rubra’ and the most famous marketing variety ‘Silver Plum’ are popular and utilised well in the local landscape industry.

These plants can grow very large and reach 1.5 metres tall with a similar width. They are referred to as giant bromeliads. ‘Silver Plum’ has broad thick leaves with purplish under sides and a silver sheen on the top. One of the real- full sun tolerant bromeliads out there. To keep them happy year-round, is to keep their tank full of water at all times and occasionally remove spent leaves. The more sun they get, the more vibrant the colour of the leaves get.

It can take up to 10 years to flower, but can send a red spike 2.5 metres tall adorned with creamy white flowers. They make excellent focal point plants and can be used as sentinel plants alone in the landscape or in a tropical garden setting or positioned either side of an entrance or walk way. Other varieties available have red colours like A. ‘Rubra’, to maroon colours like, A. ‘Purpurea’ and A. ‘Peter Tristram’.

So versatile, so tropical, so desirable!

T. lepidoto ‘Alstonville’ grows to about 4 metres tall and the floral display can be sensational with striking vivid iridescent purple flowers. Mostly though, they flower from late summer to early winter, but in warmer areas like South East Queensland their flowering can be extended right through to the following Spring. In bloom, they look so delicate but majestic!

I was cleaning up an old tired garden In July and added some tonics to this Rose bush below and 3 days later this bud burst and this magnificent white flower was on display. The inner circle of petals on this Rose has a splash of yellow glow and it was a warming sight to behold. Note the fly in the centre thought so too! Winter in the subtropics-you got love it!

AUGUST Numerology Welcome to August, the 8th month of this 1 year represents the 9. 9 is one of the most interesting numbers in mathematics and I see that its strong mathematical characteristics flow into its numerology characterises. As you may be aware a personal life path numbers are usually reduced to a single number other than the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. The Ashes Will Go On

It’s good to see Steve Smith standing up and looking to work with the Australian Cricket Association (ACA) and CA (Cricket Australia) to gain a complete understanding of the opportunity presented to the Australian Cricketers by CA. As reported on Fox News (Sunday 30th July), Smith has met with both sides over the past few days to assist with bringing negotiations to an agreeable position. In 1997, Australian Captain Mark Taylor was in a similar position when he stood up and effectively brokered a landmark deal that players still swear by today. It is not Smith’s role to act as mediator in 2017, however it is important that a leader of the game and our key on-field strategist places himself in a more balanced public position especially given that neither Steve Smith or CA want to fall off this tightrope. Either way the Ashes go – if both parties are forced into an Arbitration position, CA will contract all players from the commencement of arbitration until a new HOA (Head of Agreement) is reached. I really do not see any of this affecting the performance of any competing cricketers in summer 17/18.

A day out fishing with my husband Tim Nearhos and my cousin Stephen was topped off with the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan going right past our fishing mark close to the shipping channel at Moreton Island. Police boats moved all boats in the area out of the exclusion zone which apparently we were in, it was all very exciting and made for a great adventure

Recipes of the month we have a Dutch Recipe world 2 Next

1/2 green bell pepper 1 red bell pepper or 1/2 red and 1/2 yellow bell pepper 1 can baby corn 2 tablespoons soy sauce 3 tablespoons water or chicken broth 1 teaspoon wine or dry sherry 1 teaspoon white sugar 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil 1 teaspoon cornstarch 2 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped Oil for stir-frying, as needed 2 cups cooked chopped chicken thigh meat (or leftover turkey meat)

Leftover Chinese Chicken Stir Fry With Bell Peppers How to Make It 1. Wash, remove the seeds from the bell peppers and cut into thin strips.

2. Rinse the can of baby corn in warm water and drain thoroughly.

3. Combine the soy sauce, water or chicken broth, wine or dry sherry, sugar, and sesame oil in a small bowl.

Whisk in the cornstarch and set aside.

4. Heat the wok and add oil, drizzling it around the sides. When the oil is hot, add the garlic, and stir-fry until aromatic.

5. Add the baby corn, stir fry briefly, and then add the green bell peppers, red bell peppers. Continue stir-frying.

6. Give the sauce a quick re-stir.

Make a well in the middle of the wok and add the sauce, stirring quickly to thicken.

7. Add the chicken, mix everything together, and serve hot over rice or noodles.

I have never really connected with the V8 Supercars Sport in Australia, however as an old Townsville boy, I sat down and watched the recent Townsville Supercar Race. I was never one to ‘burn fuel’ or reward track speed and this was probably because I could not understand the technical effort or skill Involved. I know that all of you sports race fanatics are thinking, ‘what the?’ I know that one of my Bribie Island friends, Luke Kitchen will be on the phone as soon as we go to print to set me straight on the world of V8’s. I must say that I was very impressed with the television production and the live insites into the driver’s world from pit-side

Bribie Island to welcome PGA Legends The Moreton Bay Region will welcome some of Australia’s finest PGA Legends, as the Ladbrokes PGA Legends Tour rolls into the region next month.

The Moreton Bay Region will host two events which will played on the Ladbrokes PGA Legends Tour, with Pacific Harbour staging its Legends Pro-Am on Friday 11th August, while the tour will remain in the region with the Pine Rivers Pro-Am teeing off on Sunday 13th August.

Moreton Bay Regional Council’s spokesperson for Parks, Recreation and Sport, Councillor Darren Grimwade, said council was excited to welcome the two PGA tournaments and an expected 175 competitors and officials to the region.

“The Moreton Bay Region prides itself on a strong sporting culture and active, outdoor lifestyle, and I have no doubt our community will join me in welcoming the PGA Legends Tour into Pine Rivers and Bribie Island in August,” Councillor Grimwade said.

“With a quality line up of around 175 golfers and officials, including former Australian Champion Rodger Davis, it’s certainly teeing up to be a fantastic, action-packed weekend of golf not to be missed.

he had chosen and was thinking about changing courses. He wasn’t sleeping very well and had talked about getting curtains put up so his room was not so light early mornings. The night before he passed away he had a family dinner with his parents and some of his extended family and had a great night. Josh received his end of year Uni results the following day. He called his best mate from Uni and talked about his results and made plans to meet up with him the

Josh was 8 days away from being 18 years and 6 months old when he died. He was a Dean’s Scholar, studying Engineering at QUT. Josh achieved an OP1 in 2006 at Bribie Island State High School. He was a member of the Warrigals Rugby League Club and an avid member of Fitness First.

Josh was working 2 jobs part time to earn some money to pay for his expenses of living in Brisbane, at a coffee shop at Carindale and as a telemarketer for a research company. He had a lot of friends and was very much loved by his immediate and extended family.

His death came as a complete surprise to his family and friends. They were aware that he wasn’t enjoying the engineering course

next morning at the gym.

The JED Project raises money for education around mental illness, in particular depression and anxiety. So far it has raised in excess of $135000 over the last 7 years, which has been donated to the Black Dog Institute who have used this money in their education and awareness programs in rural areas, schools, workplaces and the wider community.

More importantly, the JED Project wants to tell the community that it is okay to talk about mental illnesses. People talk about physical illnesses but for some reason feel very reluctant to talk about mental illnesses. Mental illnesses are nothing to be embarrassed about and certainly nothing to be kept secret. A lot of people in our society think they cannot talk about their mental illness and the Davies family are determined to remove this type of thinking.

Top tips for fishing off Bribie Island

Well hasn’t the weather been great for our beautiful island over the last few weeks. The fish have certainly been biting well throughout the surfside and in the Bribie Passage. The anglers have told us that the Tailor are running over on the surfside with some great catches at 1st, 2nd Lagoons as well as the campsites, they are also starting to show up in the Passage near the Bribie bridge you will need to pick yourself up some Pilchards to catch a few. Whiting have been on the bite on the surfside near 1st Lagoon, Red Beach, Bongaree, Bellara, White Patch and the Avon Wrecks best bait on the surfside is Preserved Beach Worms and in the passage Live Blood Worms. Dart are showing up on the surfside 1st, 2nd Lagoons and the campsites grab some pippies to catch a feed. Flathead are well and truly biting well with some good sizes being caught Ningi Creek, White Patch and Poverty Creek with squid and mullet gut for bait. Snapper are being caught at The Ripples and Sandstone Point grab some cuttlefish for bait and you will be sure to catch a few. There is also squire about in the passage. Don’t forget when you catch a good size fish bring it in to Gateway Bait and Tackle for weigh in and get a photo. Firstly, let’s deal with the main fish you can expect to catch. There are all year round fish that frequent the surf like Dart and whiting. In summer the whiting tend to be the larger species of summer whiting. These fish have a size limit of 23cm and a bag of 30. In winter the whiting are normally trumpeter /diver whiting which have black spots on their sides. As these fish are a much smaller species they don’t have a size limit but do have a bag limit of 50. Dart are caught all year round and have a size of 30cm and a bag of 30.

So, what can you do?

• Be vigilant around your family and friends and don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions. Are you ok? Are you sure you are ok? Do you need to see your doctor? Do you want to talk to me about what is going on with you? Do you feel like something is wrong? Do you think you need to call one of the help lines?

•Watch for signs of changes in your family member’s or friend’s behaviour: becoming withdrawn from social occasions, not being their usual happy selves, making excuses for their behaviour that just don’t make sense.

•Talk about how you are feeling to your

What’s the rig to use on whiting? Well it really is up to you either a running sinker or a bottom sinker rig will work but make sure you use a small hook as whiting have tiny mouths(especially winter whiting ).

With the bigger fish like tailor or mackerel a running sinker rig with a heavy trace and a gang hook is the go as they will bite and run with your baits and the least resistance they feel the better to keep them attached to the hooks. Some advice on the sinker with the running sinker rig is to use a flat sinker so that it doesn’t move as much in the rolling surf.

Do I need a 12 foot surf rod? If you are targeting the bigger pelagic fish then you need to cast over the back of the breakers so yes you will need a longer rod and heavier set up to get to where the fish are.

If it is whiting and dart you are after then a normal 6 or 7 foot rod will do the trick

Mental illness is no different to any other kind of illness and it is ok to talk about it. No one should be embarrassed about talking about depression or anxiety as it is a medical condition. No one chooses to suffer from any mental illness any more than they choose to suffer from any physical illness.

The latest statistics released from the Black Dog Institute state that 7 people each day die by suicide and that suicide is the highest killer of Australians aged between 15 -45, ahead of both road accidents and cancer.

This is simply not acceptable and must be stopped. In the case of Josh, the Davies family don’t know if he realised he was suffering from a mental illness or not. Now, looking back, there may have been signs that they missed. They will never know but do wonder that if they had the information then that they have now, they may have been able to get him to see a doctor or seek counselling, and ultimately saved his life.
