Letter from the Owner Belinda Ferguson The past 4 weeks has been extremely stressful for myself and the ISLAND and Surrounds team. Due to a current criminal investigation into our local sitting caretaker member for Pumicestone from the police. I am not able to discuss in detail. However, the truth will be revealed.

I love this community in which I live in. I have lived and worked on Bribie for nearly 19 years and the ISLAND and Surrounds is all about showcasing our local businesses and building our communities economy, allowing our people to speak freely without serial litigators threaten and bullying people in a thuggish behaviour.

I want to thank everyone for your encouraging support to stand up for what is right and not be bullied by anyone, no matter what they threaten you with. Your support has no doubt encouraged me to fight back hard of which I am doing legally.

The ISLAND and Surrounds has printed honest and truthful articles and it will never change, the views and comments from other people in this paper are not necessarily the views of TIAS. The current caretaker member for Pumicestone took offence to 1 article in my paper, his reaction has been quite controversial to say the least.

I will not lie down and allow threats and harassment to me personally and this paper, I will also continue to keep my stance and continue to hold my head up high despite any attempts to scare me off.

Letters to the Editor...

Dear Editor, It was interesting to read how the Queensland Government candidates would fix Bribie Island Road. Their solutions were generally more roundabouts and traffic lights. Other than Simone Wilson, none mentioned the Ningi bypass proposal which was dumped by the Labor Government. Apart from Greg Fahey from One Nation, she was also the only candidate who invited community feedback.

It’s too late to fix the existing road, especially when considering future development adjacent to it. Four lanes will not make much difference. It is on track to becoming another Gympie Road.

It seems logical that a motorway from the Bruce Highway to the Bribie Island Bridge would be a far better solution. Designing it should not cost a fortune, and could be developed when funds become available. If this corridor is developed, then it is no longer an option.

It would be interesting to see if the proposed corridor for the Ningi Bypass Road has the already been built out. Other alternatives may still be a possibility like the one suggested.

So after three years Labor still has no plan to tackle ICE. It’s typical of a do-nothing government with a softly, softly approach that is failing Queenslanders.

Doing nothing is not working.

The community is crying out for leadership and we have a government stuck in neutral.

Drug and violent crime is increasing and Labor’s only solution is to hold a couple of regional talkfests.

Queenslanders want action now on this important issue.

A Tim Nicholls-led LNP Government will implement a comprehensive $52.21 million action plan to take ICE off our streets through crime prevention, increased treatment, drug addiction services and strong, targeted enforcement.

While Labor only talks about developing a plan to deal with the issue, the LNP will deliver real action and positive solutions.

Only the LNP has a comprehensive action plan to tackle the scourge of ICE, building stronger families and providing safe and liveable communities as we Build a Better Queensland.

Moreton Bay Singers warm up for Beachmere Community Carols

Bribie Bridge v Lock and Weir at Bongaree Recently, our State Member, Mr Rick Williams, advised that State Government engineers have confirmed that the Bribie Bridge has grown stronger with age and is good for another 20 years.

This is a natural phenomena of concrete as the compressive strength increases over time. The Bribie Gardens lock and weir is about 20 years younger than the Bribie bridge and when built, it was built to marine specifications at the time and built to last. The bridge over the canal at Wellsby Parade and the bridge on Goodwin drive were all part of the lock and weir development using the same construction specifications.

Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) believe differently as Council intends to demolish the lock and weir and build a new one for reasons that have nothing to do with safety or longevity. And yet there are no plans to replace the bridges at Wellsby Parade and Goodwin Drive. The reasons are simple; Council have placed a levy on residents in Bribie Gardens and the levy continues to increase so that Council can replace a lock and weir that does not need replacing. Why replace the lock and weir? Simple - Council needs to justify the high levy being imposed on Bribie Gardens residents. Council needs to be brought to account for this sham.

FREE COFFEE Staff turning over shells Last week was turnover and wash time at the Ningi Oyster Recycling Centre as we get closer to deploying our trial shellfish reefs in Pumicestone Passage.... Thanks to local OzFish Unlimited volunteers and Arthur from JKCartage (digger driver) who helped make it happen... Turns out we had moreshells than I thought we had, around 15-16 cubic meters was the revised estimate, with another 2 or so cubic meters already back in the dirty pile, with more to come from this weekends oyster festival at Sandstone Point (to be ready in 3-4 months).

On the down side we did stop one bloke from pulling up and attempting to take some shells into the back of his ute “for his garden”. Turns out even the oyster shells will be stolen

if they are not nailed down... We are now working on erecting signs that say “Do not take shells - recycled for reef restoration only”

I am single and have two grown up children, i have recently had 2 grand children, one from each. I have lived in the Pumicestone area for going on 8 years now.I first began holydaying on bribie island in the early 80’s and frequently go to the beach on summer weekends. I have been heavily involved in community and charity work for over 20 years. I have helped raise over $13m to assist the public health system by providing medical equipment, training and education, research and service support.

An review of unity water and local council operations

Along with some radio announcers caroline hutchinson and peter lang we created the gm5fk annual fundraiser. This has gone from $60 in 1998 to a record $430,000 this past june.

It will also have an historical/heritage artistic component with a large indigenous component.

I am tertiary educated, a graduate of the australian institute of company directors.

A qualified sports medicine/trainer, a level 2 rugby coach and performance driver trainer. I have represented qld as a schoolboys coach, represented australia in the formula ford world cup in 1989 with Mark Larkham as a team mate. I have had the experience of wally lewis running over the top of me once or twice during my first grade rugby league career.

I was chairman of the SC economic development board which enhanced communities with many succesful programs and projects. One is in it’s final year of the initial plan – that was the Maroochy airport. This has had an enormous affect on the growth of this area’s business sector.

I won a national award for economic development ahead of 300 + other contestants. I will use this experience within local industries to create profitable growth, job sustainability and prosperity for the Community of Pumicestone.

I believe the One Nation philosophy of ‘people before politics’.

This is your election, you can change the face of Queensland. I will work tirelessly for the community to achieve what you want to achieve. If nothing changes – nothing changes.

The main issues Cost of living is at the top of the list and one nation for a start will reduce your electricity bill by 20% Health and hospitals in this area needs a real shake up, with my experience in the health sector this will be a target for me.

Water security is up there, Steve Dickson’s master plan will ensure that we all will enjoy continuity of water supply.

I will also investigate unity water and hopefully reduce the cost of water also.

Local youth and unemployment is an issue close to my heart. I like to see kids out playing sport or enjoying themselves in the open air rather than at a computer

Local youth employment programs that will follow on from a school program of enhanced cert 2 courses. – A pathway to employment Support for local business with less red tape Establishing a community centre on bribie island for the disadvantaged, that being victims of dv, youth homelessness and drug abuse as well as normal gp’s and specialists.

I will make available $100,000 for each sporting club for ground improvements, equipment and capital works.

My vision for the future sees Bribie Island as a treasure amongst tourist destinations that will enhance the business community.

An eco tourism area that includes a rejuvenated pumicestone passage and reaches out into the glass house mountains with food trails, hiking tours, farm stays etc A community that is proud of its streetscape and greenspace as well as the members that live within it.

Why should people vote for me?

Because I have a proven track record in negotiating the finances and delivering for the community.

I delivered a $3.4 M swimming complex to eumundi after negotiating with the state gov, the council and the locals. I helped deliver the cancer centre at nambour hospital - $2.1 M I will deliver the banksia beach state school car park in my first 6 months of office. I will build a $5m multi purpose community respite centre on bribie island that will cater for victims of domestic violence, mental health, youth support for homelessness and substance abuse. It will house a retail sector that will cover the running costs.

I will provide $100,000 p.a. To the VMR and the rural fire service for replenishment of consumeables for the next 3 years.

I will provide $100,000 seed funding for the establishment of a ‘pumicestone tourism board’ I will set aside $3m for planning and delivery of a ningi traffic plan.

I know how the beurocrats work and can work with them to achieve what the people want.

I know how to negotiate a fair budget for the community and deliver on its expectations.

I will listen and provide what the

constituents want. I will work with anyone who wants to put the people first.

We listen people B4 politics.

Why did I choose politics?

International Human Rights Day 10th of December

I have always had an interest, I became concerned that the older parties were not looking after the people the way they should, so rather than whinge I decided to put my hand up and have a go.

My term in local government taught me a lot and now that both the state older parties have lost their way I looked at one nation and realised at least they would do something about the situation.

The older parties have just handed over the batton every 3 years or so and not really delivered much, just squabbled between each other and have forgotten about the people.

That is all about to change because one nation will be succesful in this election and hold the other parties accountable.

Election day – voting and reality If nothing changes – nothing changes I understand that people have voted for certain parties all their lives, have held the basic beliefs of those parties all that time and i respect that. However the older parties now are so closely aligned that there is hardly a difference and they copy each others policies anyway – they have nothing new to fight for!

All they have done for the last several terms is hand the batton over the corridor ‘here your turn’. Ther’e actual delivery percentage on promises is extremely low and the delivery on the ground is woeful because as they change the batton they throw out everything that was in motion and start again. I know how the bureaucrats work, they know they will still be there regardless of who is in government.

I know how to work with these people to enable delivery.

I know how to negotiate the budget required to put on the ground what i have promised to deliver!

I have a proven track record in succesful negotiation and delivery of what the people want.

Why you ask – it is a fact that we are in a mess due to the actions or lack there of over the last 12 – 15 years of both the older parties.

Due to poor planning, bad decision making, lack of due diligence, lack of correct forecasting, lack of proper management, poor implementation all equals poor or no delivery, poor performance and represents nothing but reckless spending.

Examples of this are :- railway disaster including no drivers, health system payroll scheme, traveston dam, electricity cuts, unsustainable renewable energy targets, unprofitable underground tunnels, a $5.4Bill under river rail scheme. Nothern rail link ....... Do I need to go on?

So, if you want real representaion and delivery of what the electorate needs - you need to change your vote to One Nation!

The first of December, the shops are alive with the hustle and bustle of the upcoming holiday, people’s minds are filled with Christmas spirit- presents, food and decorations. With all of the excitement surrounding the biggest celebration of the year, a day that has significance to all is often over looked. The 10th of December or ‘International Human Rights Day’ is the day that we celebrate coming together to respect the basic rights that we have as humans, all thanks to the United Nations. This day was chosen to celebrate the adoption of the first declaration of human rights in 1948. Although history there has been many protests surrounding human rights- from ancient Rome to the Civil war in America, this day finally recognises the rights that have be fought for throughout all of history. We may take them for granted but something as simple as freedom of speech or being able to choose where to eat were once issues that were fought for by people who were denied access to them, the 10th of December allows the world to see what progress has been made. Even though human rights have come so far we still have issues surrounding equality within races, religions and sexuality. So, even though during the month of December Christmas may become all consuming, on the 10th day of the month take some time to think about how lucky you are and appreciate what has been done to get to where we are today.

screen. I hope to develop some programs that will keep their interest and turn them into young people that are a credit to the community. I have a scheme in mind to get these kids work, i will investigate an apprentice scheme that should be beneficial to employees and employers alike.

“Comment” Your Local Councillor Update

Something I wanted to bring to your attention is the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy (CHAS) which has come about due to $12M commitment from the State Government over three years to assist eligible coastal Councils in its preparation relevant to its specific needs.

The program, managed by the Local Government Association Queensland is titled QCoast2100 and Moreton Bay Regional Council has been successful in obtaining funding under this program.

Council has commenced the development of a CHAS for coastal areas within the Council area and when completed will

provide a consolidated view of hazards that are anticipated to impact our coastal areas within the short, medium and longterm and how these hazards can best be managed.

An important component of CHAS is for Council to gain an understanding of community attitudes towards our coastline, coastal events and climate change. Council has recently conducted an on-line survey at “Your Say” on www. moretonbay.qld.gov.au. At the time of writing it is due to conclude on 8 December, so I’m hoping this will reach you in time so you can participate if you wish.

Council will also shortly be seeking nominations from community members and business groups to represent their specific area of interest in the preparation of the CHAS and nominations opened in mid-November, closing at the end of January with the successful representatives announced around February 2018. Everyone who has an interest in their local coastal community is encouraged to nominate.

With Christmas almost upon us and 2017 coming to an end, I hope the year has been good to you and you have plans to relax over the festive season with friends and family. There are some great events happening in our area in the lead up to Christmas: With my last resident meetings for 2017 being held in November, I wanted to let you know they will reconvene in 2018 on Monday, 5 February at Burpengary & Deception Bay Libraries and on Wednesday, 7 February at Beachmere.

Council Offices will be closed over the Christmas period from 12 noon Friday, 22 December 2017 and will re-open on Tuesday, 2 January 2018. Libraries will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and will close early on Friday, 22 December at 12 noon with the mobile service ending at 11am.

Council’s Customer Service number 3205 0555 will continue to operate during this period should you have an urgent matter that needs attention.

LNP to deliver Beachmere Police Beat Monday, 20 November 2017 LNP Pumicestone candidate Simone Wilson says the LNP makes no apologies for being tough on crime.

Ms Wilson said crime was out of control in many parts of the state under Annastacia Palaszczuk and her soft-on-crime attitude that favoured offenders over victims and families.

“Enough is enough. I have listened to the concerns of the community about crime increasing at Beachmere and will act,” Ms Wilson said.

“This is why an LNP Government will invest $300,000 to deliver a new Police Beat at Beachmere to reduce crime and keep locals safe.

“Queenslanders are less safe under Annastacia Palaszczuk because she has absolutely no plan to deal with skyrocketing crime rates, except to give criminals free passes.”

LNP Leader Tim Nicholls said only the LNP’s Simone Wilson would deliver for Pumicestone.

“Pumicestone has been under-represented for the past three years with the former

Labor MP lurching from scandal to scandal,” Mr Nicholls said.

“Simone is a vocal champion for her community and a vote for anyone other than the LNP will see a return of a donothing Labor Government which has taken Pumicestone for granted.

“A new Police Beat at Beachmere is all part of our plan to Build a Better Queensland by Building a Better Pumicestone.”

VITAL BEACHMERE ROAD UPGRADE LNP Candidate for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson said an LNP Government would invest $1m for vital safety upgrades on Beachmere Road.

Beachmere Road is the main thoroughfare for residents of Beachmere and part of Caboolture and is predominately unlit for most of the distance. Lighting of this road will enhance vision for commuters and provide safer travelling for residents and visitors to the area.

“This is why an LNP Government will invest $1m to upgrade this road.” Mrs Wilson said.

“Instead of sitting around talking about building infrastructure like Annastacia Palaszczuk, the LNP has put its money where its mouth is and will actually deliver the roads, bridges and dams we need.”

Queenslanders will rightly ask themselves, can I afford another three years of a Labor Government who has cut billions from infrastructure spending over the last three years.

A vote for anyone other than the LNP will see a return of a do-nothing Labor Government which has the wrong priorities and has taken the people of Pumicestone for granted and not delivered.

Wow I bet you can’t wait for tomorrow! But then when it arrives it suddenly changes and it becomes Today!!

What? How did that happen? You never said you were going to exercise TODAY! No you said are going to do that TOMORROW! Today is the completely wrong day to be exercising at all since it isn’t a Monday and it isn’t a new week, month or year and everyone knows that you can’t possibly start an exercise programme on just any TODAY, it has to be done on a very specific Day…. A day which is always known as Tomorrow.

So how many tomorrows have you missed this year? Yes it’s now November and the resolution you made on New Year eve about making a change to your lifestyle by starting to exercise and eat healthy is now approximately 326 days past it’s “tomorrow” due date.

Wow doesn’t time fly when you are avoiding a day.

And of course now it’s November most people will say it is wayyyyyyyy toooooo lattttteeee in the year to start making changes. Well guess what, surprise, surprise, I am here to tell you that in reality you can make a change any time you want.

It doesn’t even have to be on a Monday, it doesn’t even have to be in the morning. Just because you day started off with a chocolate muffin and a triple cream with caramel syrup coffee, doesn’t mean it can’t finish with a 30 minute walk and a stir-fry of vegetables and chicken for dinner.

We now have clients that are only 2 weeks away from the end of their 12 week challenge and because they all couldn’t possibly start on a Monday (yes they are real people with real lives and jobs and families and other commitments – just like you) some actually started their challenge on…..brace yourselves!!!...... on a FRIDAY! GASP! YES! FRIDAY!!!!!

And while I know you will think this is just some sort of weird parallel universe thing, our clients who

Senior Gentle Lying Bed Exercises Before You Start

One of the best ways to start your day is with gentle leg strengthening exercises while you are still in bed. Before You Start If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these exercises stop! Start slowly with each exercise and give your body time to adjust to doing something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Really! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do any of these exercises if you feel uncomfortable with the movement or you feel nervous about how yur body may react. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure

Let’s get started!

Let’s get started! The exercises shown are done while in bed, they are a great way to start your day but can be done any time you are lying down. They are designed to gently strengthen your leg muscles. Take each exercise slowly and carefully. Remember, keeping your legs strong will help you stay independent as using these muscles will help with your balance and mobility. Done regularly these exercises will strengthen your legs and even small changes can make a big difference over time. Even by practicing only one exercise a day you can improve your movement over time.

So make sure you are lying comfortably and let’s start.

HIP RAISES

Lie with both legs flat and with your head supported by your pillow. Bend your knees and slowly bring your feet closer to your buttocks. Have your hands on each side of your body for support and to keep your body stable. Lift your buttocks up from the bed and hold for a “one and Two” count. Lower your buttocks to the bed. Repeat 10 times then rest Repeat slowly, only do as many as you feel comfortable doing up to 3 sets of 10.

CORE EXERCISE

Lie with both legs flat and with your head supported by your pillow. Bend both knees up to a comfortable position by slowly pulling your heels toward your buttocks. Do not bend your hip more than 90°. Straighten one leg, just to a place that is comfortable for you and hold for one to five seconds. Slowly return to resting position. Repeat with your other leg. Only do as many “holds” each side as you feel comfortable doing up to 5 each side. Rest

HIP AND KNEE BEND

Lie with both legs flat and with your head supported by your pillow. Keep your toes pointed and bring one knee up as far as is comfortably possible. Slowly return to the starting position and relax. Repeat with other leg – again only to a position that is comfortable for this leg. Only do as many each side as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

LOWER BACK GENTLE STRETCH

Lie with both knees bent and with your head supported by your pillow and your hands by your sides. Keeping your buttocks and feet on the bed, slowly roll both knees to one side just to a place that is comfortable for you. Do not try and force your knees onto the bed if it is not comfortable for you! Slowly return knees back to being in line with your body then repeat on other side Only do as many each side as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

started on a Friday, Wednesday, gulp even on a Thursday night, are all still alive and have lost weight, centimetres, have become fitter and healthier every week since they started. In total, as I am writing this our challengers have lost over 70kgs! Yes a whole person worth of bodyfat is missing from Bribie Island and there is still two weeks to go.

But HOW did they do that? I hear you ask. And sadly that’s the thing, no one believes what we say is true until we produce another 10 clients and wave them about like human shaped party tricks.

Then just when you convince yourself that we made it all up, the actual clients start let us share their photos and start saying weird things like “Feeling great” “clothes are now too big” “Eating more food than ever before” and you realise that it can be done at any time by anyone at any age…..

At that point anyone who really wants to make a change to their health and fitness will call us.

The others start planning to contact us….. Tomorrow.

It’s no secret that Alzheimer’s and dementia have the ability to rob seniors of their independence.

But a new pilot project underway in China is aiming to alleviate some of the stressors, such as wandering, that come with memory loss.

About 50 people in the Dingxiang Community in Hefei, Anhui province have been equipped with QR code badges that contain their personal information.

The words “Please scan to help me back home” are printed on the stamp-sized badges. Embedded in each QR code is information about the owner, including their ID card number, family contact phone numbers, and the district where they reside.

As long as good Samaritans and passersby have smartphones, they can scan the badge to help a senior who is lost find their way home safely.

Seniors carry the badge, which is made of hard-wearing plastic, or if they prefer they can have another version stitched onto their clothing.

Insomnia is basically having trouble sleeping. It can present in the form of sleep onset insomnia, which means having trouble getting to sleep; or sleep maintenance insomnia, which is where you wake during the night and then have trouble falling back asleep; or nonrestorative sleep, where you wake up not feeling refreshed at all, feeling tired or even falling asleep during the day.

Proper and adequate sleep is essential for the body to function properly; as well as contributing to a better mood, a healthy weight, healthy growth and healthy ageing, and better cognitive function. Adults generally need 7-9 hours sleep per night.

Children require more, dependant on their age, and older adults require slightly less.

There are a number of reasons that can contribute to insomnia. Stress and diet are major factors. It can be caused by too many stimulants such as caffeine in the form of coffee, chocolate or coke; alcohol, food additives; or side effects from medications.

Worry and stress contribute to insomnia, as does disturbed sleeping patterns such as shift work, as well as physical factors such as being uncomfortable or snoring.

The body’s natural sleep chemical is melatonin. Your body generates and stores melatonin during the day, for secretion during darkness. Other nutrients important to sleep are glycine, L-serine, adenosine, tryptophan, calcium, magnesium, iron, inositol, potassium, folic acid, zinc and

vitamins B5 and B12.

Additional factors to look into are supporting your nervous system, modulating your cortisol levels, and regulate your blood sugar levels.

Herbs that can help with insomnia are Chamomile, Passionflower, Lemon balm, Skullcap, Lavender, Valerian. Your naturopath can tailor a herbal formula for you depending on your type of insomnia.

Nurturing, supporting herbs for your adrenals are Withania, American Ginseng, Rehmannia and Licorice.

Some more tips to help are to ensure you get adequate exercise during the day and nurture your body and mind with a warm soothing bath before bed, listen to soothing music, do a meditation, have a massage, ensure you eat dinner 2 hours before you go to bed, and ensure you have a comfortable, dark and quiet bedroom. Ensure you are off smartphones, computers etc 2 hours before you go to bed. Address your stressors and ensure a quality and regular bed time routine.

JAPAN CHERRY BLOSSOMS AND BEYOND

Buddha Vairocana known in Japanese as Daibutsu. In Tokyo the Meiji Jingu is home to an order of Shinto Priests and if you are lucky enough you may see a procession of them as you stroll through the royal park.

To sum Japan up it can be said that there is nothing you cannot see do or buy there.

Where are we going with our democracies and our political leaders ??

Unbridled populists, celebrity identities, personalities whose only qualifications are youth and complete inexperience in politics, e.g. Macron in France, Beiber[Trudeau] in Canada and now Adern in NZ or old, mad communists such as Corbyn in the UK ; nothing seems to matter to those citizens casting votes about as if they are throwing confetti at a wedding.

The only thread of commonality in all of this is a wilful determination to wreck existing Governments and their economic programs for some weird nonsense about re-distribution, war on poverty, homelessness and balanced societies… drone, drone, blah, blah.

No common-sense, just empty echoing phrases from the newly, elected, smiling, earnestly honoured straw horses whose vacuous phrases are parroted by an earnestly honoured and delighted media pack.

All these weasel words simply disguise socialism – for that is what it is, and, it does not bloody work.

It is also quite obvious that what is occurring is that the Westminster system of voting, and its various derivatives, is no longer democratic, in the sense that the end result of many general elections in contemporary democracies, do not reflect the will of the majority of the citizens.

Unpredictable, mischievous, misleading and, at times, malicious spraying of voting preferences result in nonsensical political outcomes ; leaving no one person or party able to create or lead stable governments.

In other cases there exist mind boggling quasi, dreamlike, fabrications of political distribution such as the Hare-Clark system of Tasmania or the MMP system in New Zealand which has resulted in people who do not win their seat in the election, occupying seats in the New Zealand Parliament.

All of this political weirdness seems to be carried out in the name of newness !! Time for new thinking !! Time for new people !!

A skewed aspect of this ‘ newness ‘ is also ‘ oldness ‘ ; witness the phenomenon of Bernie Sanders, the burnt out old socialist in the USA who offered so much in terms of coloured flags, slogans, experience and youthful hysteria, in the recent USA Presidential Elections, for the Democrats.

But, they did not pick him and he has gone back to the veranda, waiting for another shot at it !.

We have the mad, old communist Corbyn, in the UK. Feted by the youthful mobs and the disaffected, and remember folks, there will always by mobs of ‘ disaffected ‘ at election time, as the next Prime Minister of the UK. This man will bring nothing, nothing, rien, to the UK leadership…but the mob, seeking ‘ newness ‘ and ‘ redistribution ‘ will flock to him at the polling booths.

When we speak of ‘ re-distribution ‘ we should at least examine what that means ? What is going to be re-distributed ?

WHITE PATCH RESERVE We may not have done the best we could for all local natives.

Queensland’s first native reserve was established at White Patch.

Going back to early settlement, we read in Tom Petrie’s Reminiscences of Early Queensland, of an official attitude back in 1877, during the Douglas Ministry .

Here are a few extracts from her book: “Natives were supplied with a boat, fishing net, harpoons for dugong and had to work in exchange for rations, catching fish, curing them and making dugong, shark and stingaree oils ... they caught great hauls of sea mullet .... the settlement bid fair to become self supporting were all sold in Brisbane to purchase rations... This body exists on the premise of ‘ newness ‘, ‘ youth ‘, ‘contemporary social issues’ and nothing else. The people who speak for them carry the burning, non-negotiable eyes of the political zealot ; their actions be-lie their stated truth. They are socialists, committed to the return of socialist governments…. because !!

The global political theatre, since the end of World War II, is littered, almost polluted, with the wreckage of nations that have embraced socialism and the human suffering that spreads like a damp, grey cloak over the ruined economies.

Human misery and political failures dog the existence of socialism like a pack of shadowy hyenas, gibbering and gabbling in the half- light of lies, blame shifting and corruption.

Cranky Lizard gets a bit emotional here, folks, not a good idea when writing about politics and the way we organize our societies ; but the lessons of history are being forgotten, or conveniently not taught to our young generation, and, it seems a crying shame that they will have to find out for themselves, that socialism is not the light on the hill ; it is a ‘min min ‘ light, bouncing on the horizon, enticing but unreachable, offering promises that can’t be kept and solutions that do not work.

Socialism/Communism is the rule of the mob by a determined few….it has failed time and time again, but its advocates tootle an enticing flute. And sadly, it seems as if many of our young people are listening.

Private enterprise, capitalism within a democratic, responsible system, that reflects the will of the community and not the preferences of the elites, is not perfect ; but it beats the hell out of anything else.

COMMUNITY REPORT-BACK A Message From Susan I can’t believe how fast this year is going – time flies by when you’re busy! Over the past year, I’ve had the absolute pleasure of working with students, parents, seniors, businesses, workers and community organisations on local projects and events. Many people on the Island have also had the opportunity to participate in my policy development forums, having a direct say in Labor’s platform on pensions, telecommunications and the environment. But, the year isn’t over just yet and there’s still more work to be done before the Christmas and New Year break. Keep an eye out for my upcoming community events for more opportunities to have your say.

Community Highlights Local women team-up to support breast cancer survivors Local women Margie and Annette organised a fantastic fundraiser at Beachmere Bakery as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month recently. It was an absolute pleasure to attend this great event, with all money raised going to Be Uplifted Inc – an amazing charity that supports breast cancer survivors through the treatment process and with associated expenses, such as the up-front costs of prosthesis.

The event was a success with a great turnout of local women and supporters, including Medicrew Medical Centres who threw their support behind the cause. If you are able to make a donation to Be Uplifted Inc, you can do so via their website - www.beuplifted.org.au.

A Day for Duke was a huge Success despite the rain

On Saturday 21st of October A Day For Duke held it’s 2nd Annual event on Bribie Island. This annual event was inspired by an exceptional lady who had an amazing and brave dog called Duke.

Brooke O’Malley adopted Duke when he was 9 years old. Immediately they had an incredible connection with each other, I was fortunate to meet duke and I found him to be almost human, he never took his eyes of Brooke.

An event to help bring greater awareness that cancer affects animals and humans alike. The day was filled with free familyfriendly events, a range of activities for all, including fun dog competitions, food vendors, raffles, stalls, obedience schools, rescue groups and much, much more!

Beachmere – Blokarting at its best.

Blokarting is the “cheapest speed sailing sport you can get into” says Beachmere local Ross Webster. And Ross should know as he has been Blokarting for the past three years and now is the authorised dealer for South East Queensland.

A friend introduced Ross to Blokarting and what started out as a visit to see how it worked, turned into a hobby and now a business which keeps Ross sailing across the ground at over 40kph in 12knots of breeze.

Blokarting is a type of land sailing, and started in New Zealand in 2000. Each Blokart, made of stainless steel, weighs just 27kilos and is built to “one” design.

It packs up into a bag and, essentially, you could take your Blokart anywhere in your car boot or anywhere in the world as checked in baggage.

“This is not a sport”, Ross corrects me, “it’s an addiction”. People get into a Blokart and when they get out they have what we call “the Blokart grin”, it’s a huge smile and they just can’t wipe it off their face”.

“Essentially each Blokart is the same design, its more about the sailor’s skill rather than the cost of the kart. It’s easy to learn so great for beginners, but it’s a high performance sport as well where sailors can achieve really high speeds,” Ross explains.

BRIBIE ISLAND SES LNP Candidate for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson said an elected LNP Government would provide $5,000 to the Bribie Island State Emergency Service for the provision of two Thermal Monoculars.

The Bribie Island SES assist Police and other Emergency Service bodies undertaking many community safety activities and have been regularly called on to assist in searching for people, often suffering from dementia. The provision of these night goggles will allow for longer night search times and potentially save a life.

The only way the SES will be able to purchase these safety items is if you vote for your local LNP Candidate Simone Wilson.

LNP to deliver Spinnaker Sound intersection upgrade LNP Pumicestone candidate Simone Wilson has announced that an LNP Government will invest $2.5 million in vital upgrades to the Spinnaker Sound intersection with Bribie Island Road.

Ms Wilson said for too long the Pumicestone community had been stuck in traffic because Annastacia Palaszczuk had done nothing to fix it.

“The LNP Government will invest $2.5 million to upgrade the Spinnaker Sound intersection so people can get home to their families sooner and faster,” Ms Wilson said.

“This intersection is often unsafe for the residents who live at Spinnaker Sound to exit the Marina onto busy Bribie Island Road.

“Instead of sitting around talking about building infrastructure like Annastacia Palaszczuk, the LNP has put its money where its mouth is and will actually deliver this vital upgrade.”

LNP Leader Tim Nicholls said Annastacia Palaszczuk had done nothing over the past three years to fix congestion on Pumicestone roads.

“The LNP has listened to the concerns of locals and committed to funding and building this vital upgrade,” Mr Nicholls said.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk has absolutely taken the Pumicestone community for granted over the past three years.

“A vote for anyone other than the LNP will see a return of a do-nothing Labor Government.

“Upgrading the Spinnaker Sound Intersection is all part of our plan to Build a Better Queensland by Building a Better Pumicestone.”

LNP Leader Tim Nicholls said the cost of renewing a driver’s licence would be halved for Queenslanders with a Seniors Card.

“Currently, holders of a Queensland Seniors Card are not eligible for any concessions on driver’s licence fees,” Mr Nicholls said.

“Our discount will see driver’s licence fees range from $36 to $82 as opposed to the existing fees under Annastacia Palaszczuk which could cost up to $165.

“Combined with our commitment to freeze family car registration fees in the next term of government, Queensland seniors will be much better off under the LNP. “The cost of living keeps rising and Labor has no plan to offer Queenslanders any relief.”

LNP Shadow Seniors Minister Ros Bates said the LNP would also make off-peak bus and rail travel free for senior go card holders.

“This will mean that many of the 20 million public transport trips seniors make each year will be free,” Ms Bates said.

“Under our plan, seniors could save around $720 in public transport costs a year which will go a long way to easing cost of living pressures that have skyrocketed under Annastacia Palaszczuk.

“The free off-peak travel will be valid on Queensland Rail, Translink, buses and G:link services.”

Ms Bates said the LNP understood increases in the cost of living made it hard for Queenslanders to make ends meet – especially those on fixed incomes such as seniors and aged pensioners.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk has no plan to tackle the cost of living issues facing Queenslanders, instead she continues to use everyone as cash cows,” Ms Bates said.

“In recent years the cost of public transport has risen dramatically.

“When Annastacia Palaszczuk was Transport Minister in the Bligh Labor Government, bus and train fares went up 15 per cent year after year to a total of 45 per cent.

“The LNP has a proven track record of looking after our senior citizens and reducing cost of living pressures for them.

“The LNP team has been listening and understands something must be done and we will act on reducing the cost of living pressure for Queenslanders.

“We certainly will not use Queenslanders as cash cows like Annastacia Palaszczuk has done for the past three years.”

Ever since the dawn of technology, there has been a never-ending debate separating the world: MacBooks or Microsoft? Well, today we shall settle this quarrel with a comparison of all assets from both competitors’ highest ranking laptops (the MacBook Pro 2016 and the Surface Book i7) and decide which is the best laptop, once and for all.

The MacBook Pro is both thin and light and was released last year. It has a twelve inch screen, though, like all Macs so far, it doesn’t have a touchscreen. It weighs less then a kilogram.

The Surface Book was also released in the last year (2016). It weighs one and a half kilos and is around the average size of a laptop with its thirteen and a half inch screen. Unlike its MacBook competition, this laptop is adorned with a touchscreen.

The prices for each laptop vary depending on which specifications are chosen, though the Surface Book has significantly more variety in these options. The MacBook costs from $1703 to $2100. While the Surface Book is on sale for $1300 to $2900.

Through the specifications available,the MacBook has both Core m3 and Core i5, both have 8GB and the options of 256GB of storage or 512GB of storage.

The specifications of the Surface Book vary from: Core i5 and Core i7, with

4GB, 8GB or 16GB with either 128GB of storage, 256GB of storage or 526GB of storage.

Both models are built using high-end and pricey materials, which justifies the high costs.

Both offer four colours, Apple providing rose gold, silver, gold and space grey. While Microsoft opted for less traditional options with: graphite gold, platinum, burgundy and cobalt blue.

The MacBook has a fully aluminium chassis. Though, only one USB port which many could - and have been - arguing isn’t sufficient for needs. Microsoft has continuously advertised that you cannot find a screw of fastener anywhere on the Surface Book due to their innovative design hiding all joints and connectors.

With the Surface Book boasting a battery life of up to fourteen hours, it one ups its competitor with the MacBook Pros battery life only reaching - a still impressive, simply less - eleven hours.

Through the statistics of both laptops, neither are really designed of gaming, though the Surface Book does have a much larger variety and quality of games in comparison to its MacBook counterpart.

Many statistics have been provided today, though, every individual – through varying experiences - holds difference attitudes and preferences. No one opinion can make such a life-changing decision (which laptop should I choose) for every person in the world – considering varying factors. So I shall leave you with a question: which do you think is the better laptop?

I wonder, as a person who has been involved with the LGBTQIA+ community and their rights, how Australia is still debating on whether to grant an entire community of people a basic human right. Stated in Article 16 “Right to Marriage and Family” of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights “Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family.

They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution. Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses” (Declaration of Human Rights, 1948). Why should someone be denied happiness and love, just because of their sexuality?

Another common argument used against same-sex marriage by adult homophobes is “my parents raised me to not believe in that” or “I was raised in a place where homosexuality was frowned upon”. I do not understand those arguments. I am so normalised with the LGBTQIA+ community, that I cannot comprehend why someone would vote no, or why someone would choose to be homophobic. I have grown up in a different era to those in older generations, but your upbringing, your parent’s views, do not have to be your own. you can change your ideologies, your beliefs and values, and you can become more open minded and accepting. The argument “I was raised to…” isn’t valid anymore.

We’re in 2017, and its time for change, for the better.

Mayor Sutherland at report card launch with Bribie Island State School students Pumicestone Passage has earned an A-minus for its excellent environmental condition in the latest Healthy Land and Water Report Card unveiled today at the Bribie Island Seaside Museum.

The waterway, which garnered a B-plus rating in 2016, was rated excellent overall for the first time by not-for-profit Healthy Land and Water (HLW) following significant improvements to the health of freshwater streams and estuarine water quality in the catchment.

Each year the HLW Report Card grades the health of catchments across South East Queensland, including the Pumicestone Passage and Pine and Caboolture catchments, using extensive computer modelling and field monitoring.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said the strong showing for Pumicestone Passage demonstrated the combined effort of Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast councils, local businesses, community groups and residents to deliver the 2013-2016 Pumicestone Passage Action Plan.

“Since we launched the action plan in four years ago, 36 major projects have been delivered with the goal of enhancing the passage’s habitat, water quality, and social and economic benefit,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“For the health of the passage to go from a B-minus to an A-minus in the space of two years is an incredible feat and we need to continue to ride the momentum.”

Mayor Sutherland said council and stakeholders would now look to implement a further 32 projects in the recently adopted 2017-2020 action plan to further enhance the passage’s environmental habitats and biodiversity.

Division 2 Councillor Peter Flannery said estuarine water quality was also rated excellent in the Caboolture Catchment and freshwater health along the Pine Catchment also improved, with both catchments maintaining their respective B and B-minus grades.

“It’s encouraging to see that water quality continues to improve, and we certainly have no intention of getting complacent now,” Cr Flannery said “Whether it’s the Wamuran Bushcare Group removing more than 1,800m2 of weeds along the Caboolture River, or the installation of a new fishway at Brendale to help native fish navigate the South Pine Rivers, it’s all hands on deck when it comes to improving our waterways.

“There’s still work to do, but it is good to know we are on the right track.”

[ Some excerpts from a book about the Northern Territory called The TigerTea Club appear in this article. ] “Are you gunna bloody vote ? “ the old codger asked Bob Plumb, whilst they were both having a beer in the front bar of the Pub. “ Haven’t done for forty years. “ Bob Plumb replied, “ Too busy paying cricket on Satdys to get to the Town Hall, anyway, they are all drongos, anyway !! “ “ No, they are not.” Olive the thin bar girl with a dark complexion, huffed. “ Someone’s got to run the bloody show.” “ Yair “ said a voice from the dark corner of the bar ; the corner in which hung an old picture of a racehorse called Carbine in a wooden frame and two old pictures of team-mates from the women’s net ball team sponsored by the Pub. The pictures were of the 1964/65 team which were the Runners – Up in the local competition…The Corella Cup. There were not many in the Pub that afternoon, Thursday, mainly because all the cockies were out in their paddocks worrying about their chickpeas. Rain was coming and if there was enough rain they would not be able to get the tractors on to the paddocks to get the chickpeas off !

Bastard !!

But everyone knew that two Saturdays from now…they would have to vote at the local polling booth, which was the Community Hall. And, as usual, there was a fair bit of discussion about who was going to vote for whom and all that stuff.

I mean the whole district had voted for Nationals since the end of the War and they probably would not be changing now ; which was pretty good for old Dick Snapshot, for he had been the Member for Bunyip for the past thirty years, but ; there were a few weird things going on around the place, rumours were flying about vets changing the sex of cows, without the cows permission, which was rubbish – I mean the cows did not want to change their sex ; everyone knew that and no proper vet would do that anyway !

Besides, Billy Thronkle said “ All my bloody cows are bastards anyway ! “ Billy only had 17 cows, no bulls, no mickeys, no heifers, and the 17 cows were wild as yellow crazy ants, everyone knew that !!

As usual, Henry Puggles, the Pub owner planned on running an Election Night dinner/party outside on the large covered patio over- looking the billabong which was a good place because it had a raised band platform, jasmine covered wooden lattice screens all round, where you hang fairy lights and plenty of room for long trestle tables.

He had booked the local country/blues band, The Wheat Foxes for the night.

A few signs went up around the town, pictures of bloke’s heads with smiling

faces and smart slogans like… ‘ we get it right ‘ ; ‘ going forward together ‘ ; save everything stop everything ; and so on. It did not take long for some faces, on the signs, to have Hitler moustaches on them, others had Ghandi spectacles painted on their faces and one of the signs showed particular artistry, having the face turned into a pelican wearing a hard hat !! Pretty good really ?

As it had been for past elections, so it was for this latest one, not much public interest or engagement , perhaps a higher level of cynicism than before, but most of the cockies were worried about the bloody chickpeas and most of the town mob were thinking about what was going on up North and could they get a job at the new mine ??

Because there was going to be new mine, the union mob in orange T-Shirts had told everyone that there would be a mine…so that was that !!The union mob had the say…everyone knew that !!

No mainstream pollie actually came to the town during the election – they never did. Dick Snapshot rocked up on the second Friday afternoon of the campaign, but that was normal. He always did that.

He drank a few beers at the Pub, made some promises, bought some beers and chucked a few flyers around the bar – well, Mary belle Steadford, his Electorate Secretary did.

rusted on Labour, said to Dick, as he walked past him, “ If you was the last politician on Earth I would not vote for you, no way !! “ Mary belle, looking pretty flash in the pink akubra replied “ If you did vote for him, I would tear it up anyway, you drongo !! “ And that was about as rough as it got in public, although the Greens candidate, a local female school teacher had an apple pie sploshed on the windscreen of her late model SUV, and the words… “ Polluting Gas Guzzler “ smeared in red lipstick down the side of the driver’s door.

Everyone in the town received a couple of ‘ mail-outs ‘, you know the bits of paper that had the local candidate’s face on it and a list of all the good things they were going to do, if they were voted into the Parliament. These were an enormous waste of money actually, no one really read them, and if they did, all that happened was that folks looked for things wrong in them, not what was right !!

A couple of the locals noted that Mary belle had a new Akubra this time, a dusty pink colour, and old Horace Wanderstick wondered “ where do they find pink bloody rabbits to make pink bloody akubras these days ? “ It was a fair point.

Just like in all election campaigns, particularly in small towns, almost everyone knows the main players in political parties – they all put up with each other because they all live in same town ; but, election campaigns create tensions and at a school football match, on the second Saturday of the campaign, Dick Snapshot, the local member, thought he would drop in on the game, on his way to Flat Barrow Creek.

Polling booths, banners, flags, posters, cor-flutes still with Ghandi glasses on them, lamington stalls, Lion’s Club Hot Dogs and Rotary Club steak sangers plus the usual voting card mob, although not half as bad as city polling booths : it was all there, democracy in action. No fights, some shouting, Bob Plump told the union blokes to “ stick it up your bum ! “, nobody knew what that was supposed to mean, certainly not Bob, because he had had one toooo many schooners and the polling booth mob would not let him vote.

Bob shouted out that he was “ gunna write to the Prime Minister about this bullshit !! “ Some- one replied, “ Ripper ! “ The Election Night Party at the Pub was a winner. A beautiful calm night, warm but not hot, fairy lights turned the Billabong into a lake of dancing lights.

Bob said, after his fourth schooner, “ Did you read the rubbish they sent out about the mine up North ?, He was looking at

“ Don’t care. “ came Drew Linton’s voice, “ I am taking Wendy home !! “

Dick and Mary belle stayed the night at the old Red Back Motel and headed off next morning to Flat Barrow Creek, where they would do it all again.

Election day came around.

These bits of paper brought about a fairly weird conversation in the Pub, between Bob Plump and Billy Thronkle, you know, the bloke with all the bastard cows.

Dick also said that was a new mine starting up North ; he also said he was the one who got the whole thing going, but, such was the level of interest in politics in general about the town, that nobody believed him or really cared.

As far as the mob were concerned, they wanted Dick to buy them beers in the short term and give their kids a job in the new mine up North in the longer term.

Billy when he spoke. “ S’not bloody rubbish. “ Billy mumbled, he was on his fifth schooner, “ They’ll need bloody milk at the mine and I reckon they might buy mine. “ “ Whaaaat ? “ laughed Bob, “ Your cows are bloody bastards, you’ll never milk them, besides the mine is too far away, even if you did get any milk it would be custard by the time it got there ! “ “ Yair. “ said the same voice from the dark corner. “ Fair, dinkum, “ Olive, the thin, dark complexioned bar girl smiled, “ Youse blokes talk like drongos, why don’t you go and do some proper work ? “ “ Hey.” Henry the Pub owner moved into the bar, “ Easy on Olive, these blokes are good customers.” “ Yair.” The voice from the dark corner echoed.

It was pretty plain for all to see that the town was fairly taken up with mine up North, and a lot of people were looking for jobs and other kinds of spin-offs from it – it was a pretty big deal in this town anyway – and throughout the rest of the district as well.

The Pub kitchen had put three dorpers on a spit and had made trays a crisp roast potatoes and the Tuggles Farm had thrown in all the pumpkins that their pigs did not want, so the cooks roasted them as well, splashed honey on them and mixed with the roast potatoes.

For $30.00 per head you could get all you could eat plus a bottle of wine from the Stone Country.

Wine was drunk, lamb disappeared down hungry throats and the results flashed up onto the screen in between dorks in suits making nonsense comments about ‘ trends and swings.’

Like always the Wheat Foxes blew the mob away, and the Smart twin sisters, Wendy, who was blonde and Roxy, a brunette for tonight, were wearing long white cotton peasant dresses with green sashes tied at the waist. Their sinuous movements to the Wheat Foxes, had a few old blokes, and some young ones as well, pouring beer down the front of their shirts as they were captivated by these two women who were a class act with their short bobbed hair and friendly, open faces.

The night drew to a close at about midnight.

Recipes of the World 6 Ingredients 2-3 prawns green beans 2-3 whole chives/spring onion mint/coriander leaves pinch of salt 2-3 rice paper wrappers dipping sauce: 10g miso paste 3g broad bean chilli paste 10g mayonnaise1

Fresh Spring Rolls with Japanese Style Sauce How To Prepare

Fill a small saucepan with some water and add a little salt. Bring to a boil. Add the prawns and boil until they bright pink, about 2-3 mins. Be careful not to overcook them.

In a separate saucepan, boil the green beans for 2-4 mins. until blanched and set aside.

Prepare the rice paper following the instruction on the package.

Normally this involves soaking the rice paper wrappers in cool water for a few seconds until pliable.

Lay the rice paper on clean cloth.

Arrange the mint/coriander leaves on the bottom of the rice paper and add the prawn halves in the middle.

Top with the green beans and one whole chive/spring onion. Sprinkle a little salt on top to taste.

Fold the sides in and tightly roll to ensure all ingredients are inside.

Make the dipping sauce by mixing all the ingredients together.

Serve spring rolls with the dipping sauce as a snack or side.

So what of the future? I ask Belinda Ferguson to answer 5 speed questions on everything from politics to food.

I had the pleasure of meeting entrepreneur, business woman and the editor/founder of the fastest growing independent newspaper in the region, Belinda Ferguson.

As a Freelance Writer, I approached Belinda Ferguson to write a short story about Belinda and have this published within Belinda’s own publication, Island and Surrounds Newspaper. My purpose for undertaking this short story is to inform readers and supporters of the courage, energy and passion needed to create a newspaper in today’s digital competitive environment. I am sure that many people would have advised Belinda against such an undertaking - This is an exert from Belinda Ferguson’s story.

It was no surprise to me that Belinda Ferguson decided to create an independent community newspaper.

When I first met Belinda 10 years ago, she was managing a membership sales department whilst at the same time engaging with the local community to share her passion for everything ocean, events, beach, golf, animals, family and love. When you meet Belinda Ferguson, you are quickly made to feel welcome - her presence, huge smile, eye contact and overwhelming eagerness to listen to people is palpable. As I sat down at Belinda’s home to taste a home brew latte, Belinda excitedly walked out of her office with two of her latest newspapers.

I wish I could have frozen that moment in time – it was as though Belinda had just lay down on her king bed after a 10 year back-packer experience on a $5 per day budget. Belinda said, “I created a community paper because I wanted to build a better community by providing an outlet for the community to share their stories, read topical issues, publicise events, share business stories and provide an opportunity for local businesses to advertise products.” She said, “If you were to ask me why I exist or to describe my purpose in life, I would say that I want to build a community based on the values or honestly, compassion, good work ethic, fellowship and love. This is what makes me get out of bed every morning and what our community newspaper is all about.”

Belinda said, “Although we will certainly grow our on-line digital presence with the Newspaper, I believe that many people like to pick up a paper or book and read it without necessarily logging-in onto a digital platform.”

The youngest of three children, Belinda Ferguson was born and raised on Sydney’s North Shore to loving parents who were focussed on family and work. Belinda’s dad, Craig Ferguson was a famous Rugby Union Test Referee throughout the late 1960’and early 1970’s as well as operating a menswear retail business.

Belinda tells the story of when her parents would occasionally head off to Melbourne to collect supplies and leave her to deal with the punters from the Puckapunyal Army Base at the ripe old age of 11. Belinda said, “Sometimes when a group of army guys had consumed too much bourbon, I would just serve them straight coke on ice. They didn’t know the difference.”

During these days, Belinda was also sent to Boarding School which only lasted two years following a successfully executed expulsion by Belinda. The family moved to the Golf Coast about 7 years later where Belinda’s dad managed the Chevron and Broadbeach International Hotels. Belinda said, “These were great times and I learned a lot about people, work ethic and business. Sadly, both of my parents have passed away now.” Belinda’s dad died in 2003 and her mum in 2012 after 60 years of marriage. Belinda said, “Dad was my hero in life. His humour, work ethic and respect for women was amazing. I think that the passing of my dad was a major event of my life. It made me look at things differently.” Belinda Said, “Everybody has challenges in life. It is how we deal with these challenges that makes us who we are.”

Belinda Ferguson’s professional career has been driven by the desire to build relationships with diverse groups of people. Belinda has been engaged in senior corporate sales roles across various industries including; the telecommunication industry, travel industries, film and entertainment industries and sports. Belinda said that her two memorable roles was with the Show Group as the National Account Manager and with Troon Golf as Membership Sales Manager at Pacific Harbour. Belinda said, “I have always been appointed to corporate leadership roles in Sales. In life, everything is about communication and authenticity and I thrive on sharing stories and selling fantastic products.” She said, “If you are honest, genuine and passionate, most people will listen to your story and share in your journey.” Belinda’s said, “The publication of a newspaper takes a lot of planning, patience and coordination. We have a great team of writers and designers as well as strong support from the local and regional business community.”

There is no doubt that Belinda Ferguson has learnt many lessons across her professional and personal life journey.

A: “I love living on Bribie Island and being part pf this amazing community. I have invested my expertise in building a very important independent newspaper which I will continue to grow to increase distribution in the interest of my supporters and community.”

Q: We have a state election looming. What are your thoughts of the state election?

A: “I hope that who-ever is elected gets on with supporting grass-roots community needs with integrity, honesty, authenticity and compassion.”

Q: When you are not running your business, what does Belinda Ferguson like to do?

On Saturday, 11th November, at 4 pm, the world changed for the better when two beautiful people came together to celebrate their marriage, Brendon Mills and Danielle Stanley (nee Mayne). The wedding was in Sunset Park at the end of Sylvan Beach Esplanade at the entrance to the main canal into Pacific Harbor.

The now Mr. and Mrs. Mills have come from a couple to a family of seven. The wedding was attended by 70 guests from as far as Ballarat in Victoria and throughout Queensland.

The weather stayed fine although a bit overcast.

The wedding had a western theme to it, with all the bridesmaids, flower girls and even the bride wearing cowgirl boots and the groom wore jeans, white shirt, black vest and of course boots. The reception was held at the brides` brother`s property in Ningi.

The star of the ceremony was Jager the dog. Jager is across Ridgeback Mastiff bitch, who, when cued strutted down the aisle with the rings placed around her neck and presented them to the bride and groom, then put her paw out and shook both their hands, then rolled over. It was a beautiful wedding.

The nature of the lunch was such, that it was part of a two day workshop about the threat of wild dogs and how to manage the threat. It was a live- in affair, hence the restaurant was attached to a large, well- appointed motel. And that should have been my first warning signal.

Upon arrival at the workshop site, first thing to do was to check-in, then register for the workshop and then follow instructions, which as a good army man I was sure I could do easily.

Tables everywhere with people seated, each table had a sweating bucket with a bottle of white wine in it and a bottle of red wine next to the bucket, the rest of the table was crisp white linen, sparkling glasses and silver eating implements neatly arranged. Looking around, I could see no obvious arrangements so I approached a table in a corner with a couple of blokes and three women and two empty chairs.

Anyone seen anyone without a name tag ? “ Valma looked at my shirt, but Bob from Exosan, the only wild dog poison on the market, had written… Wild Dog … on the plain back of his business card, in biro, and stuck it my shirt with a bit of blue tack that anyone coming to a lunch like this always carries. “ Nah, only got wild dogs here. “ He sprayed with a horsy laugh.

No other table or person had anything to say.

Miss Frizzy clickety clicked herself out of the room with hands held in little tight fists by her side and a fixed glare at me as she went past our table.

Sometime later I went to my room and slept.

I stayed ‘ wild dog ‘ for the rest of the show ; vowing never to come back without my own bloody name tag in my pocket.

And, I had to admit, many Army lunches over the years had nothing on this, nothing.

Is there a moral to this ? Yes, most certainly.

The paper strives to provide information for the local community and the thousands of visitors to the region on issues which are of key interest to many people ; obviously one of those issues is fishing…a key recreational sport and pastime of the region.

Mud crabs are moving with good catches up near Donnybrook, and out front of Ningi Creek but you will need to keep a close eye on your pots as there are many share farmers out there ! Cast out in front of your boat, allow it to drift to the bottom and then jig it along with the current, flatties, being ambush predators will grab at a bait moving past. Our Club Members have, for years, been catching good quality bream in the passage on cooked prawns, more so than green frozen ones, we put it down to the colour of the cooked prawns

being more visible to the fish. Over the next few months we will see Summer Whiting moving around the bay and into the passage. The guys in the local bait shops can help with advice where these fish are at and what bait they are taking. “ I have also been advised by The Club Treasurer, Mr Ian Venning, that bream is being caught in the Pacific Harbour Canal area, particularly around pontoons and bridge structures on soft lures.
