Last week was international women’s day (week), there were a few functions held in honour of our women, listening to so many professional ladies was so inspiring.

Dear Editor, A quick tip for Harvey Fewings - if you’re going to critique someone else’s logic, you’d better make sure your own is impeccable.

The attempted analysis of “Socialism’s Tortured Thinking” stumbles at the first hurdle and never recovers. The Victorian Government is not Socialist. It’s Labor, certainly, and I know it’s a favourite tactic of conservatives to call Labor “socialist”, but just saying it doesn’t make it so.

Today’s ALP supports the mainstream capitalist economy and is distinguished from the Conservative parties only by a slightly greater emphasis on issues of social justice. Maybe people feel they can equate the phrase “social justice” to “socialism”, but again, no.

But the underpinning argument of the article seems to be that “The Socialists” are nobbling Australia’s power grid while simultaneously causing an increase in demand by pushing people towards electric cars.

The fact is that electric power production in Australia has been increasing steadily over the last 50-odd years and continues to grow to meet demand. If coal-fired power stations around the country are closing, it’s not because of government ideology, but because they are reaching the end of their lives and are uneconomical to maintain.

And if there’s an increase in the use of electric vehicles it’s because of that entity so cherished by the conservative

right - The Market. People want to buy electric vehicles, and car companies are working to meet the demand... and not a Politburo diktat in sight.

You can call me a socialist if you like, Harvey - I’ll take it as a compliment.

But don’t paint what’s happening in science and technology as some sort of “commie” plot - it’s too complicated and too important for simplistic sloganeering and dodgy “logic”.

It is an essential part of a Community Newspaper to elicit and encourage responses from those who read the paper.

I note you say that my logic seems to be ‘ off ‘ – and you say that the Victorian Government is not socialist, it is Labor.

Tony, I quote you from the Constitution of the Australian Labor Party – “ The Australian Labor Party is a democratic socialist party and has the objectives of the democratic socialisation of industry, production, distribution and exchange…………and so on “ So, Tony, the Victorian Labor Government, by the Constitution of the

Making Quality Dentistry Affordable

Dr Steve Mercurio and his wife Chantal (Practice Manager) It’s inspiring to meet a local dad and mum who have taken the leap of faith to build a new family business and contribute to making our community a better place. After 17 years of Dental Practice working throughout South East Queensland and Bribie Island, Dr Steven Mercurio B. DSc (Hons) and his Practice Manager and Wife, Chantal Mercurio finally opened the doors to their purpose-designed and familyfriendly Dental Practice on Monday 12th March. I had the privilege to sit down with Dr Steve and Chantal to chat about family, design, dentistry, airplanes, cheese cakes and Bribie. When I arrived at the Bribie Family Dental Clinic, Dr Steve and Chantal had just finished with a professional photographer capturing pictures for the new practice with staff and family. Dressed immaculately in their clinical uniforms, they appeared as if they were about to feature on a new TV Series.

For a moment I thought I might have been in the wrong place. While Dr Steve and Chantal are seasoned professional communicators, Chantal’s passion and energy landed her the role of media spokesperson for our interview. Chantal is a second-generation Bribie Island local and as with most professional women, managing the home business and new

family man, you have to provide realistic options to patients that are affordable.

The lack of affordability at the time of the treatment can lead to much greater problems in the long-term. I think that we have been able to manage this by creating a repayment plan option for those who may struggle to meet the costs.”

Dr Steve and Chantal were keen to take me on a tour of the practice and I was blown away by the detail and design aspects of each room within the practice.

It is evident that these guys are creative and design orientated professionals.

The entrance feature wall, colours, local artworks and lighting are features of the new practice. All that was missing was a stiff latte, piece of baked cheesecake and a teeth scrub – none of which I received on my first visit despite being informed

by Chantal that she makes an awesome Mars Bar Cheesecake. Dr Steve said, “Many of us find ourselves working for other people most of our professional lives which naturally has an upside, however the opportunity to design and your own modern family practice is rewarding and exciting and I am very proud.” Prior to opening the business on 12th March, the Bribie Family Dental Team of 5 had been busy training and testing every aspect of the clinic. Chantal said, “We have undertaken a lot of testing and training to ensure that our new software and instrumentation are working effectively. It’s been over ten months since Steve and I agreed to take the leap into our new business and we are both so excited to finally realise our dream.”

Thank you Dr Steven Mercurio and Chantal Mercurio for providing the opportunity to share your short story. I wanted to punch the air as I walked out of this practice. To see the excitement in Dr Steve’s eyes as I said good bye was gold. I hope that this inspires other professional couples to share their journey and take the risk to make our world a better place for our children.

Q&A

Show Us Your Face Dr. Mercurio How did you get warmed up before you treated your very first patient on Monday 12th March?

Chantal said. “I went to Bribie Primary School and Bribie Secondary College and my mum also spent time attending Bribie Primary School. We love Bribie Island and we care about the needs of families and friends on Bribie Island,” she said. “Steve who was born and raised in Brisbane and completed his Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) at the University of Queensland in 2001,” she said. “It would appear that Steve followed me to Bribie Island although I guess we followed each other across the region before finally searching for the best location to raise our family and build our first business together.” Dr Steve and Chantal have four children aged between 1-11 years so as one would expect, life is somewhat driven by a shared iCloud calendar supported by a very loving extended family. Regardless of your profession, the risk, investment and challenges of starting a new business are high at any time. One of the reasons for Steve and Chantal’s decision to push the go-button on the

new business in June 2016 was based around their research. Courtesy of some smart Facebook and Community Online Research, it became evident why the community wanted a new dental practice on Bribie Island. Dr Steve said, “Our research demonstrated that there was a shortfall in dental services in our area.

This creates significant problems in an

expanding community when the demand on dental services increases,” Dr Steve said. “Our research revealed that the community wants an affordable familyfriendly practice operated by one local dentist. The community also requested a No-Gap Child Dental Scheme and the ability to arrange simple re-payment plans,” Dr Steve Said. “As a Dentist and

I am not sure that I performed any specific warm-ups or workouts – We spent about a week testing our equipment and treating a few family members prior to the big day. The clinic testing procedure was rigorous, so we were ready to go when the doors opened.

How will you make it more affordable for patients?

In our research, the community told us that they would like a more affordable local dentist. We have made our costs more affordable by controlling our overheads and designing a smarter space; reducing the costs of treatments where possible; providing simple repayment plans so that community can begin the dental treatment today. We have also invested in state-of-the-art technology and equipment to improve the efficiency of our service.

Where would you choose to spend your time when you are not treating patients?

These days we are so busy with a new business and with 4 young children. I like to relax with friends at home on Bribie Island sharing spit roast in our back yard – I really enjoy cooking on my spit roast. I also have a passion for everything aviation. I enjoy flying my drone and have a Pilot’s licence to fly twin engine aircraft.

Although I haven’t flown a twin engine for a few years, I can’t see myself flying any time soon with our new practice.

Community It is not good to compare, however I believe our practice is a benchmark practice because we have designed a clinic based on what our community has told us that they want. We have also taken the time to fit the latest equipment.

What excites you about working at your new practice?

Up to this point in my life, going to work was working for someone else and working according to their values, expectations and fees. Now I can jump out of bed, come to work early, plan the day over a short black and enjoy meeting our patients and creating good connections with the community.

Dr Steve Mercurio How important is diet to healthy teeth?

Educating families on the affects of specific foods to the health of our teeth is important. You must communicate in an honest way to inform and educate your patients.

How should we go about choosing a toothbrush?

Choosing a toothbrush can be a personal thing although I use an electric brush to assist with cleaning and because of the smaller head. At the same time, you can achieve a good clean with a standard brush if you take your time and understand what it means to clean your teeth properly. I always suggest that you come for an annual check-up and we will help you with the best type of brush for your teeth.

Who does the cooking at home and what is your favourite tucker?

My wife and I love our food. Chantal is a real foodie and does our menus and food at home. I have a Spit Roaster that I like to fire up on weekends or with friends.

Chantal cooks amazing cakes including my favourite Mars Bar Cheesecake – of course I scrub my teeth after this.

How do you rate yourself as a dentist?

Of course I have to refer this answer to my wife who seems to rate me rather highly as one would expect. I rate myself at a 10 plus. As humble as a Dentist can be, I think that I have a following and people do travel distances to see me at times. I think if you are real person, people will relate to you.

Have you catered for kids and their toys at the practice?

Well we have provided a wall iPad in the waiting room with an integrated TV in the treatment room to screen Netflix programs as needed. You won’t find toys in our waiting room, but you can see a few games and perhaps google a topic on the shared iPad. How do you make your patients feel welcome and comfortable?

I think that you have to show your face by meeting your patients in the waiting room and walking them into the clinic with you. It’s the same as when you have treated a patient – it means a lot to a patient to say goodbye in the waiting room after you walk them out. Comfort and welcoming is all about caring and building trusted relationships.

WEDNESDAY, 28 MARCH CRAFT Graciously, I’m reminded of my desire to attend the next BANG meeting because I have my own pet project about food trees for the Beachmere Black Cockatoo.

As women began to leave I heard a beautiful voice call out, “Ladies Lets Do Lunch again.” It’s not about the food ladies, it’s all about your company and insightful ideas.

My “Ladies, Lets Do Lunch” invitation arrived by email last month, reminding me that it’s been a year since I last attended the Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) lunch.

Back then, I was impressed by the local community projects already achieved, such as organising sites for the Clean Up Australia Day teams, bringing a Bendigo Bank to town, the weekly JP Roster, and a week long workshop program and music festival. Lots of people are still talking about the Art Show from the year before (Fabulous Art Beachmere) and are getting excited, and their artwork ready, for this year’s event.

So I ordered my lunch and sat ready to chat and make new acquaintances.

Instead, I listened, silently fascinated, by the speakers who were so willing to be vulnerable as they shared their knowledge, skills and personal stories. I felt my connection with the group when I noticed that we all seemed curious and interested in the potential of these uplifting community projects of soul and integrity.

What I love about BANG is the women who inspire me with creative ingenious community projects born from compassion for others and desiring best opportunities for the Beachmere locality.

Beachmere neighbourhood watch getting stronger every year President of Beachmere Neighbourhood Watch, Lyn Burgess, says the new year has started strongly and the Committee is looking forward to increasing awareness of the group in the local area.

“We have quite a few new projects on the agenda for this year and we continue to be a strong local entity in Beachmere”, she said.

“Our Police Liaison officers continue to support us by attending all our meetings and we encourage all our members and any interested locals to attend”.

Wedding of the Month Andrew and Alea from the Book Exchange on Bribie Island finally shared their vows after 11 years of courtship in front of more than 250 of family and friends at 4.30pm on the 16th of February. One thing was for sure, though…. no one made a sound while we all listened to both pledge their love for each other for the rest of their lives. The wedding was held on the beach at Happy Valley, Caloundra.

It was such a beautiful wedding, and there was not a dry eye on the beach. The wedding was simple but stunning. The dress code for the ceremony was no shoes on the beach which in Queensland is the only way to go.

The Federal Member for Longman, Susan Lamb MP, has joined Labor in calling on the Government to stop stalling and get on with the job of protecting 650,000 Australian families who are being ripped off by pay day lenders.

Federal Member for Longman, Susan Lamb MP, said it was time the Government stopped sitting on their hands did something about this growing financial epidemic.

“The Government has had almost two years to regulate these atrocious practices and implement the recommendations contained in their own small report and credit contract (SACC) laws committee.” said Ms Lamb.

Susan Lamb said “Over the years, with the combined leadership of Tony Abbot and Malcolm Turnbull, we have seen wholesale power prices skyrocket. Local businesses are really feeling it, telling me that their energy bills are hurting their ability to survive and remain competitive.”

Power prices have increased dramatically over the past decade (2006-2016). In 2017, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) says household bills climbed by 12.4 percent. The biggest increases have been reported in Queensland, coming in at 136 percent.

Longman businesses send message to government: energy prices still going up and no action on climate change

“When I read the Government’s report, I was left speechless. There have been cases where families have paid over $3,000 for household goods like clothes dryers that have a recommended retail price of just $345. That’s equivalent to an interest rate of 884 per cent. It’s just unacceptable!”

“It’s absolutely abhorrent that pay day loan companies are permitted to come into communities like ours, cash in on people’s disadvantage and plunge them into ridiculous, unsustainable levels of debt.”

Despite an announcement by the Minister for Revenue and Financial Services Kelly O’Dwyer in November 2016 stating support for the vast majority of the recommendations from the committee, the Government is yet to introduce legislation to clean up the industry.

A recent report from the Consumer Action Law Centre also showed that the number of borrowers taking out more than one payday loan in the preceding 12 months has grown from 17.2 per cent in 2005 to 38.0 per cent in 2015.

This means that average number of loans per loan borrower is 3.64.

“They have already come out and said that they support the vast majority of the recommendations, so I really don’t understand what the hold-up is.” Ms Lamb said.

Labor’s plan to introduce renewables into the energy mix will deliver the cheapest revitalisation of Australia’s ageing electricity system, which includes a number of important key measures: •

A commitment to ending national energy policy uncertainty and achieving 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030.

Crating Renewable Energy Zones to drive more efficient generation, transmission, distribution and storage.

• Modernising the National Energy Market (NEM) rules to give more power to consumers.

Susan Lamb said “It makes sense to invest in renewable energy. It’s much cheaper than building new coal power stations and the costs of renewables are continuing to fall rapidly.”

At the roundtable discussion, local businesses highlighted the sustainable practices that they have implemented to reduce their carbon footprint and save money on energy bills. Health Developments Corporation Director, Dr Evan Jones, unveiled the state of the art features of his organisation’s new medical facility, Health Hub Morayfield.

Dr Jones said, “Health Hub Morayfield is a new medical facility equipped with world-class sustainability features including a NuGreen Solutions 404kW solar panel system, two electric car charging points, and four rain water tanks equalling 184,000L of storage for all nondrinking water,” “We’re committed to doing our part in reducing the impact of climate change and the broader health implications that it has on our community.”

Ms Lamb said, “Here we have Health Hub Morayfield, a local health service that specialises in and supports people with their healthcare needs, having to

pick up for the Government’s policy shortfalls to bring down electricity costs and help reduce our carbon footprint,” “Dr Jones deserves to be commended on this, but it really should be the Government leading the way on climate change and energy policy, not local businesses,” “Prime Minister Turnbull continues to cover his eyes and ears, pretending that there’s not an issue. I mean, even Tony Abbott’s own hand-picked taskforce reviewed the Renewable Energy Target and found that building more renewable energy puts downward pressure on power prices.” Ms Lamb said.

Longman’s local business community are desperate for a national energy policy that will support strong renewable investment, lower prices, ensure reliability and improve competition in the market.

The Member for Longman and the Shadow Minister for Climate Change’s discussions will continue tonight, speaking with local residents at the Caboolture Senior Citizens Association.

Priorities for Palaszczuk Government in the 56th Parliament The Government I lead will always put Queenslanders first, and that means delivering the commitments and keeping the promises we made to the people of Queensland.

In our first term we delivered 513 – or 93% – of the 553 commitments we made to the people of Queensland at the 2015 election.

The delivery of our second-term election commitments will continue to support Queenslanders by prioritising job creation, delivering world-class health services, providing quality education for young Queenslanders and reskilling those in, or re-joining, the workforce.

Our 2017 State election commitments will support more than 60,000 jobs.

We will bolster frontline services across the State by employing 3,700 more teachers, 3,500 nurses and midwives, over 500 new police officers and 100 extra firefighters.

We are renewing our investment in programs such as Works for Queensland and Skilling Queenslanders for Work, which are driving employment growth and providing job opportunities across our state.

We are committed to a perpetual funding solution for backbone of Queensland’s road through the $1 billion Bruce Highway Trust and we are progressively upgrading the M1 to make it at least six lanes wide from Brisbane to the New South Wales border.

Our investment in world-class education facilities continues with the construction of 10 new schools, upgrading of 17 and planning for a further seven.

We will also make new investments in key industries including tourism, agriculture and renewable energy.

We will also continue to improve vital health infrastructure in every corner of the State.

My Government will invest $697 million to refurbish hospitals at Logan, Caboolture and Ipswich.

My Government’s comprehensive program will create new jobs and new opportunities for Queensland, and will deliver the services and support Queenslanders need.

Still no word on Mobile Black Spot Program and cellular tower upgrades People in Donnybrook, Beachmere, Ningi and areas on Bribie have been living with poor mobile reception for quite some time now, and are desperate to know when our local cellular towers will be upgraded. My Office has made contact with the Minister for Regional Communications, Senator Bridget McKenzie, to find out when we can expect our mobile reception to be improved. We were told that announcements would be made in early February, which would include an expected timeline for completion of the upgrades. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting for a response. I won’t stop pushing the Government to come through with its promises to upgrade the towers and improve reception. I will keep you updated on the outcome of my meeting with Senator McKenzie.

Government invests in female founders on Women’s Day Innovation Minister Kate Jones last Thursday 8th of March announced the Palaszczuk Government would invest $3 million to support Queensland’s female entrepreneurs and promote gender equity among startups.

Ms Jones said the Advance Queensland Female Founders Program would extend the successful Women’s Academic Fund for female researchers to include funding to support women behind startup ventures.

“The 2017 StartupAUS Crossroads report revealed only four per cent of startups have an all-female founding team and as few as 15 per cent have at least one female founder.

Participants in today’s consultation included funding recipients from Advance Queensland programs like Ignite Ideas and HotDesQ and participants in the Female Founders Mission to London.

“The Palaszczuk Government is devoted to giving all Queenslanders a fair go – that’s why we’re giving a leg-up to women in the startup space.”

Jill finally “calls time” after 22 years

Jill and long time friend Ken Johnstone Jill (Jillian) Chandler was born in England in 1944. She migrated to Australia as a (ten-pound pom). You know them, they were mostly the good ones. When they arrived in Australia, they (the family) moved to Terang in Victoria for two years then they moved down the road to Warrnambool for 24 years. In 1995 they decided to pack up and move to Bribie Island and now Jill and her husband Ken live at Sandstone Point.

On Saturday, March 3rd, Poolwerx in Bongaree opened their shop for a fundraising event with raffles and a sausage sizzle and all the staff were involved in some way. It was a very humid day and the mascots “Life Saver Lil” (Michelle) and “Live Owl” (Phoenix), were doing it tough. Franchise owners Michelle and Anthony Spicer were only to eager to help little Dylan along with Mike Geddes from Poolwerx, who also is a Bribie local.

Jill pouring one of her last beers I have known Jill for a fair while now and it was a pleasure to enter the club and be served by a “real lady.” The club may differ with my thoughts, but I reckon Jill will be irreplaceable. Jill’s daughter, Sarah, also works at the club and I know she will miss her. Sarah is also a longtime employee of the club.

Jill started her working career on Bribie and the Bongaree bowls club and was there for two years before she started work at the Solander Lake bowls club at Banksia Beach. Jill is now 73 and

Renee McCann, Dylan’s mother is attempting to raise $20,000 to purchase a smartpup (assistant dog), not only for day-to-day assistance for Dylan, but to also become a companion for this beautiful little girl.

In the time that I was there, along with the local member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson, who is right behind the fundraiser. The store was very busy and almost everyone stopped to have a chat to Renee and purchase raffle tickets and, of course, try a snag or two.

Young Dylan can stand and she crawls to get around, but she is unable to walk, a smartpup will assist in everything that she needs to do in day to day living and not to mention, make a little girl, very, very happy.

But this is only the beginning for Dylan because she will eventually have to have a series of operations, but, alas, they cannot be performed in Australia. Saturday’s fundraiser raised over $2300 with an auction still to be ran by Michelle and Anthony Spicer at Poolwerx. Renee spoke to me this morning, 5th March, and asked me to publicly thank Michelle and Anthony very, very much for their support.

Kathy Unwin is a “late stage cancer survivor” who has now taken on a new project – to raise awareness and funds for Hair with Heart, a Variety Club charity.

Hair with Heart provide wigs for children who have lost their hair due to Alopecia or other medical conditions such as cancer.

“I was fortunate and did not lose my hair throughout all my treatment and illness so, when I completed my final surgery and with a completely healthy body, I thought ‘Time for a Haircut and I can donate my hair to someone who needs it now’.” Kathy said.

With support and encouragement from husband Mark, Kathy will donate a very long, blonde ponytail.

Kathy’s hair is also special as it fits all the criteria such as it is a natural colour with no dyes or colours and it needs to be at least 35.5cm in length (Kathy’s hair is over 40cm!).

Kathy now helps other people to overcome their cancer and make lifestyle choices that benefit them. She is in the process of building a new business and website to help and support even more people in overcoming their cancer and moving forward in their lives.

Before You Start : Have a stable high backed chair or kitchen bench near for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Stretch your left leg forward and lift it about 2 inches from the floor. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds before returning slowly to the starting position.

Repeat the exercise with the other leg. Perform 2 to 3 times with each leg. Rest

And this means fitness classes are filled with happy, healthy, smiling women but only a dusting of wise men.

Again I ask… WHY??? The classes are certainly not designed only for women, in fact our circuit classes are an excellent muscle building class for men and the Heartbeats classes are for anyone who wants a gentle exercise class or may have heart disease, diabetes etc. and as we all know it is more likely that men will suffer from these diseases.

So for the month of March I am hoping to encourage women to come along to a Heartbeats or circuit class, and just like the old tradition of bringing a plate to a gathering could you instead, please, bring a bloke. Any bloke will do, although if he isn’t yours you might want to ask permission of his owner first. Of course I would never tell you to trick the bloke into coming along, but if that works go for it! If you do bring a bloke both of you will get a free Heartbeats or Circuit class to try.

Even if you are already coming to either of those classes you can still bring a bloke and get a free class. If you are a bloke already coming to classes then bring a bloke mate! If you are a bloke without someone to bring you, then come along and you will still get a free class! And for those blokes who are already doing those classes???

You have already won just by being smart enough to look after yourself.

Of course ladies there is a down side, you won’t escape your bloke for that hour and once the bloke discovers how much happier, healthier and energised he becomes from exercising, he will tell you that doing the class was all his idea and you are lucky he thought of it.

Holistic approach to stress

When your body and brain are not properly nourished, your ability to cope with stress is reduced. On-going stress leads to fatigue, hormonal imbalances, blood sugar imbalances, depression, and compromised cognitive function. Effects from this can be lack of motivation for doing exercise, weight gain and difficulty losing weight, cravings and emotional eating, as well as issues with memory, learning and focus, systemic inflammation, malnourishment and thyroid dysfunction. Proper nourishment of your body and brain will contribute to your ability to switch off the stress response, maintain a healthy mood and cope in stressful situations. Nutrients your body requires for these processes, as well as magnesium, are zinc, B vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Ideally eating a healthy diet would give us what we require nutritionally, however 90% of the population do not consume adequate amount of fruits and vegetables, and also eating a diet based on overly processed foods actually act as anti-nutrients and have a detrimental effect on our health.

Caboolture Hospital welcomes 15 new graduate nurses

Unit, upgraded our Intensive Care Unit and we are getting ready for a large expansion of our Emergency Department.

The nursing service at Caboolture Hospital is expanding with more than 24 new starters set to join the ranks by June this year.

“We always love to see fresh faces around our hospital and our new nurses are going to learn a great deal from our already incredible cohort of nurses,” Julie said.

Contract awarded for new Caboolture Police Station Construction of the new Caboolture Police Station and District Headquarters is about to begin with the appointment of Badge Construction to build the $16.5 million state-of-the-art facility.

Police Minister and Morayfield MP Mark Ryan said the police station will be built under the new Buy Queensland initiative, providing hundreds of employment opportunities for local businesses.

“The police station and district headquarters will be built on a new site on King Street which the Palaszczuk Government bought specifically last year on behalf of the Queensland Police Service (QPS),” Mr Ryan said.

“This will enable the current station, also on King Street, to continue operations without disruption to the high-quality service our local police provide for our community.

“I am particularly pleased the construction will support local workers in construction, electrical, plumbing, security and landscaping, which is great news for Caboolture.”

Mr Ryan said the new complex will also give frontline police the ability to take advantage of new technology

to support policing in the community and to deliver a modern police service.

“Construction is expected to take about 12 months and when completed the new police station will be one of the largest outside of the Brisbane CBD,” Mr Ryan said.

“It will include purpose built areas for the Criminal Investigation Branch and special investigative teams, the Child Protection Investigation Unit, the Suspected Child Abuse Network (SCAN) officer, a Patrol Inspector, a Detective Inspector, General Duties, Crime Prevention Unit and intelligence.”

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said the Buy Queensland initiative, which came into effect for tenders from 1 September 2017, recognises the important role local businesses play in local communities, both economically and socially.

“The whole reason we’ve created this policy is to strengthen the chances of local businesses winning jobs in their own community,” Mr de Brenni said.

“It’s great to see a South East Queensland business win this contract to deliver a new police station and regional headquarters for the Caboolture region, and I expect we will see more contracts awarded to local businesses under the Buy Queensland initiative.”

Just exactly what is “ the public interest “ ??

In the last two weeks, the Nation has been treated to a spectacle of public shaming, by national print and electronic media, similar to the use of ‘ medieval stocks in the market place of the local village,’ all in the name of “ It is in the public interest. “ Cranky Lizard asks, what exactly is the public interest ??

And, to qualify my following remarks, if you think I am looking to criticise the print and electronic media in the nation…you are right !

I am.

Cranky Lizard is not a trained journalist, although that does not mean much these days, considering the standard of public discourse ; of course, there are a few men and women who qualify as professional journalists, I shall not mention them here, they would be embarrassed.

Cranky Lizard is a writer. In another life, for many years, Cranky Lizard researched and wrote reports on sensitive matters for high level Government officials, including the odd Prime Minister. In those forums, Cranky Lizard had the ‘ public interest ‘ very much at the centre of global, whirling events, affecting the destiny of our various National alliances.

But, Cranky Lizard was never a public servant, not that there is anything wrong with that splendid calling ; just a point of clarification.

In a legal dictionary, [ West’s Encyclopaedia of American Law, edition 2, 2008 ], public interest is defined as

“ Public Interest is a common concern among citizens in the management and affairs of local, state and national government. It does not mean mere curiosity but is a broad term that refers to the body politic and the public weal.” [ Weal means wealth….common wealth ] Now, we all know to whom Cranky Lizard is referring in this matter ; a certain rural couple, one holding a high position in the current government and the other employed, by the former, as a media advisor/manager [ what- ever that means ?? ] So let us apply the Public Interest test…

Have they done anything criminal ? No. Have they done anything illegal ? It seems not.

Have they done anything immoral ? In today’s society of marriage breakdowns, illicit affairs and strange standards of corporate behaviour, morality is a big judgement call – but there is room for some questions !

Have they done anything inappropriate?

Yes. The Senior Office holder has abrogated normal standards of public behaviour, by politicians, commonly accepted by the community – and, considering that politicians have been conducting affairs, having marriage breakdowns for decades – it is a judgement call on standards of public behaviour – for example, a Tourism Minister bonking on his office desk, the Speaker’s Chair being used as an aide to coupling, a Prime Minister falling in love with a biographer, an Opposition Leader having an affair and wrecking his marriage in a public show of emotion, members texting photographs of their penis in a wine glass and, long ago, a senior politician dying on the job in a Sydney motel. The list goes on and on…

So, by those standards, inappropriate behaviour sneaks in, just !!

So how was the public interest served by the hysterical behaviour of the media, the fluffing up of the stories, the gross misuse of adjectives, the inflammatory reporting on television news, the sanctimonious, holier than thou, self- justifying interviews, the mania for personal detail – hushed tone reporting of office tensions, unflattering photographs of a pregnant woman going shopping, ‘breaking news ‘ bullshit regarding the sex life of the office rabbit, anything, anything at all. No balance, just public smearing. How was the public interest served in these matters ?

In Cranky Lizard’s opinion – it was not !!

Not under any circumstances.

No, this was an old fashioned, uncontrolled, undignified, unprofessional media feeding frenzy.

Media, both print and electronic, in our contemporary society, occupy positions of enormous influence of public opinion.

Reporters are in your lounge-room every night, they are on your breakfast table, they are in your car as you drive to work, they are on your computers, they are on your phones ; their presence is overwhelming and, if you don’t challenge them, omnipotent. Many members of our communities form their views about current events by the information they receive from the media. That may or may not be a good thing, but that is what it is !

Therefore, it is blindingly obvious to

Cranky Lizard, and, probably to most people reading this, that with that position of influence comes a certain responsibility.

A responsibility not to abuse the position of influence. A responsibility to remain calm and professional. A responsibility to consider just what the ‘ public interest really is. A responsibility to resist the siren songs of salacious gossip and to conduct themselves in a dignified manner, reporting the facts, balancing the views, seeking the truth and, above all, remaining objective.

Well, there was nothing responsible about the mad scurrying of the media packs with TV cameras on the streets of Tamworth and Armidale. There was nothing responsible about the news items reflecting the views of certain reporters, with more concern about their own careers than the ‘ public interest.

This episode has changed the way the behaviour of elected officials is reported.

The truth has been damaged here and may not recover from that damage.

Clarity of purpose of the media and public trust of the media has suffered in these weeks. The anger of the unfairness and the shaming of these two people is palpable on the streets of Tamworth and Armidale ; no one has gained anything.

Our nation is not stronger, richer or safer because of this media event. Sure, they have pinged a man who demonstrated poor judgement, who is to cast the first stone ?? His family have not benefited from this stuff, his children will never forget the experience, the Government most certainly did not need or deserve this distraction, the man and the woman involved have their own mirrors, in which to look. Those mirrors are not for us to see !

The public interest has not been served here, in the opinion of Cranky Lizard.

It was just an old fashioned, undignified media feeding frenzy.

And that is a shame, because objective, calm reporting of these matters would have served the public interest and should have focused on the principles of public behaviour of the elected officials involved not the personalities.

They have long memories in that part of the country – this matter is not over, not by a long shot.

“Market prices in Queensland reached record levels, as the Palaszczuk Labor Government refused to act on the allegations state-owned generators were gaming the system to the detriment of businesses and families.

“Labor is addicted to the revenue these businesses provide.

“Profits across the sector increased by almost $600 million last year. This meant an 11 per cent increase in dividends to the government.

“That increase in dividends came straight out of the pockets of Queensland households and businesses.”Ms

Frecklington said Labor’s mishandling of the electricity industry would cause future price hikes.

“Remember, Labor ripped $5 billion out of these businesses and today’s audit report again highlights how this will impact them moving forward,” she said.

“The Palaszczuk Government has increased the dividend take at these businesses to 100 per cent, leaving them cash deprived.

“Queensland also has the most concentrated electricity generation market in Australia, but Labor is refusing to introduce competition as a way of driving down costs because they’re addicted to the dividends from these businesses.

“You can’t tax your way to growth. Sadly Labor continues to use electricity as a secret tax, on top of all the other massive tax hikes they’ve either announced or refused to rule out.”

Music is played both old and new and mystical creatures such as leprechauns are the focus of young children, whose interest quickly becomes drawn to the stories about the troublesome creatures. The fairy tales and myths surrounding leprechauns are not only enjoyed by children but also adults, as it is strongly believed that if one of these allusive fairies were to be caught, they would grant three wishes in return for their freedom. There are many tales surrounding the joyful day filled with green and many sweets, however the focus of the day remains, many decades later in Ireland, on a Saint Patrick who had a great impact on Ireland and continues to every year on the 17th of March.

St Patrick’s Day, a traditionally Irish celebration has become a day that the entire world celebrates or recognises in some way. Whether that be by donning a green clothing item or celebrating in true Irish fashion by feasting on a traditional meal and heading to the pub.

So what significance does the green and specifically the day have to the country of Ireland? St Patricks Day is celebrated to acknowledge and remember St Patrick, who brought the attention of the Irish towards the Christian religion.

The saint also was a patron of Ireland and supported the country. The reason that the 17th of March is celebrated is because it was the date the patron passed away and the celebrations were thought to be a tribute towards the saint that helped Ireland progress and grow. Many different traditions exist to celebrate this day, including the common working Irish mans meal which is corned beef and cabbage, one of the only ‘special’ meals that many Irish citizens were able to afford. Other meals that are often eaten on the 17th of March include Irish stew, cream chocolate mousse cake for dessert and potatoes champs which are a combination of spring onion, potato, milk and sometimes additionally cheese- these patties are also referred to as cally by locals. Circumnavigating Australia in a Motorhome – One (Senior) Woman and Her Dog Dreaming about driving off into the sunset and doing the ‘big lap’ of Australia? Gold Coast resident Kari Rawlings, did just that; at the age of 69 she jumped in her white Fiat Ducato motorhome, nicknamed ‘Snowfall’, and set off with her dog Bella on their big adventure.

Doing the ‘big lap’ is something that most Australians put on their list of things to do in their retirement — usually with their life partner; cruising slowly and hitting the caravan parks along the way.

I know for many they have a preconceived idea of Delhi as being big smoggy and containing all too many people. While some of this is true there is another side to this metropolitan city that is incredibly exotic. It was at the famous Red Fort that the Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru unfurled the flag that signified the end of British rule in 1947. Today some of the most exquisite luxury hotels can be found here. The Red Fort is one of the most visited places in Delhi along with the Qutab Minar tower of victory built in 1193. Ajmer-Pushkar Sarovar Paris. The Akshardham in New Delhi epitomises 10,000 years of Indian culture. It is one of the most breathtaking structures which showcases the essence of India’s ancient architecture.

AGRA- the ancient city came to light during the Mughal (Mongal) reign. Made famous by the iconic TAJ MAHAL one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is situated approximately 200 kilometres from Delhi. One of the most exquisite marble tombs Itmad-Ud-Daulah was built from 1622 to 1628 by Queen Nurjahan in memory of her father and is entirely made of white marble then

inlaid with semi-precious stones. There is a strong Persian influence in the design.

Agra Fort built by the Emperor Akbah precedes the Taj Mahal by nearly a century. It is a magnificent structure in its own right with fascinating outer buildings such as the Jahangir Mahal – built for women and the Moti Masijid Mosque. A wonderful time to be in Agra is during a festival and one such – the Taj Mahotsav is held in February for 10 days. This is where you will see classical dance, an incredibly colourful display of arts and crafts and the most sumptuous Indian cuisine.

Kari says she has almost always felt safe and welcomed even in the most isolated of places.

Kari, who turns 70 this year, thrives on the empowerment and freedom that roadtripping alone gives you. Kari bought her Fiat Ducato ‘Melaleuca’ motorhome from Horizon Motorhomes in 2012 and has lived her life on the road with her beloved 9-year old dog Bella ever since. They’ve been on so many enviable and solo adventures around the country, though it is her latest trip circumnavigating around Australia and completing the ‘big lap’ that is the most remarkable — she has ticked off a huge ‘bucket list’ item.

“Even if you are travelling alone, you are never really all alone,” she says.

“I have to pinch myself that I actually just did that…but I did! Every single day was a highlight… Australia is just a wonderful country.”

When the big day came it began like any

From crossing Queensland and the Nullabor, through Western Australia, Outback Victoria and New South Wales, there are few places in Australia that Kari hasn’t seen or experienced yet. But, for this adventurous woman and many others alike, the journey will go on.

Kari Rawlings on her travels other — popping in for lunch at the local RSL with her family and friends. After preparing and packing, she and Bella headed south towards the Burringbar Range.

On her journey, she marvelled at endless scenery of sparkling waterways, enchanting beaches, charming country towns, striking desert landscapes and friendly people almost everywhere she went, including many other solo women on the road.

“I was surprised at just how many independent women there are on the road.

So many women are there to support you if you need it and I’ve made lots of new friendships.”

Kari spent most of her journey free camping and only stayed at a caravan park if it was necessary and pet friendly (of course).

“Because I have solar power and good-sized water tanks in my Horizon motorhome, I am able to be independent for a fortnight at a time if need be. I love the freedom and it’s the best option when you travel with a dog. They can run around and get the exercise they need after being on the road for quite a while.”

Kari’s first solo trip was through the high country of Victoria, where she stopped at the Dinner Plain and it was snowing.

She used the traction control to drive in the snow and her diesel heater, fitted as an extra, was worth every cent. It was this experience that earned her Horizon motorhome the nickname ‘Snowfall’.

Kari recommends planning where you’re travelling to and making sure you’re fully equipped – well as much as possible because “stuff happens and that is all a part of the adventure,” Kari says.

As a dog lover, Kari advises a bit of research. “If you’re travelling with a pet you need to prepare and pack for them and make sure you know of pet friendly places to stop at along the way, as most National Parks don’t allow animals.”

“But, most of all, don’t settle for a life you’re not thrilled about – hit the open road. Prepare as much as you can but most of all ask questions to fellow travellers. Most ‘solos’ are friendly and outgoing and most travellers will respond in the same way. The last few years have been life-changing, I wouldn’t change anything.”

We hope you will begin meandering in the beautiful Bribie Island and Surrounds discovering our hidden treasures.

This unique area is a truly diverse ecological paradise and you cannot visit without really feeling immersed in the beauty of our countryside, beaches and the glory of nature.

We want our Bribie Island and surrounds Meander members and others in the area strive to influence and shape the Pumicestone region for the generations to come. Living close to nature you begin to appreciate the impact it has on your lifestyle and health.

John first opened his salon Cuts, Colours and Curls on Bribie Is in January 1985 in Bongaree but after a little while he saw a need and an opportunity in Banksia Beach and decided to move his salon there in January 1988 more than 30 years ago.

Together with his wife Pompea they built a successful business proudly serving the people of Bribie Is while along the way raising a family and employing many local people, teaching them the trade of both Hairdressing and traditional Barbering.

Bribie Island Gem and Fossicking Club is Turning 20 this year.

The upcoming exhibitions in the Matthew Flinders Gallery at Bribie Community Arts Centre 2018: The Working Together Groups Showcase is on, featuring work from more than 12 different art and craft groups learning and sharing at the Arts Centre each week.

Barry Anderson with only one arm did not stop him from learning to Cabochon (shape and polish a gemstone) and Faceting (cutting a gemstone) There is excitement in the air at the Bribie Island Gem and Fossicking Club, said President, Greg Hemphill. The club will be holding its Gem Festival on the weekend of September 8th and 9th at the Club, situated at the Bribie Island Community Art Centre, Sunderland Dive Banksia Beach.

Features beautiful coloured pencil drawing works by Leonie Meyer (who is manager at Seaside Museum, Bribie) and her students. Leonie’s lovely work of her niece sitting on a mangrove branch was People’s Choice winner in the 2017 Matthew Flinders Art Prize. (see attached).

Leonie says those who think coloured pencil work is child’s play should think again. It calls for exacting, patience to bring the multiple pencil strokes to life.

It was founded in 1998 and has now grown into one of the best equipped Gem & Fossicking Clubs in Australia offering members excellent learning facilities in cabochon, faceting, enameling, casting and silversmithing.

The Club takes great pride in ensuring new members are taken through each craft and taught with volunteer tutors from within the Club. It is a great opportunity to learn and gain new skills.

Once they have done their basic training, there are co-ordinators in each of the sheds ready to assist and guide people as they create their own work.

The craft-oriented Club, conducts ongoing training ensuring everyone has the opportunity to improve their skills.

There are members who enjoy holidays to the Gem Fields of Sapphire, Rubyvale and the likes. They take their caravan there, where time is spent digging for

World Day of Prayer

Last week a most enjoyable Service was held at the Transformation Centre Church for the World Day of Prayer 2018 .Representatives from no less than nine different congregations enjoyed contributing to or attending the Program .Eight being from Bribie itself .

Church) led the singing of the Lord’s Prayer (unaccompanied) .We then enjoyed a mime presentation by the Uniting Church . Neena Thompson (Uniting Church) narrated the Bible Story of Creation based on Genesis 1:1-31.Our speaker Margaret Saunders ( Transformation Church) expressed the need to protect and preserve the Environment ,particularly turtles and fish species since they were being depleted by the effects of mercury from the gold mining industry .Since Bribie understands the urgent need to save turtles’ habitat , green turtle shaped cards were issued to everybody where they could write how each felt the environment could best be preserved e.g. recycling ,careful disposal of waste ,together with their personal commitment which was then collected to be sent on to Suriname .

In a very informative wide ranging program the issue of family violence was expressed along with the urgent need for quality education .

We had to consider :- Does one even know where the country of SURINAME is ? Is one aware of the social and economic conditions there ?

These questions were answered in part during the Program which also had 30 readers from the many churches represented who explained SURINAME’S multicultural lifestyle or shared prayers to cover their needs .All this was held in a beautifully decorated Church adorned with real sugar cane stalks , rain forest plants ,models of turtles and fish ,real sea shells ,gold bars etc..

USC caboolture students start the year under a cloud of turnbull government cuts Yesterday, the Shadow Assistant Minister for Universities, Terri Butler MP and Federal Member for Longman, Susan Lamb MP, visited the University of the Sunshine Coast’s (USC) Caboolture campus for o-week.

During this visit, Terri and Susan spoke to USC students about the pressures they face trying to keep up with the costs associated with obtaining a degree, and the challenges ahead of them in light of the Government’s proposed $34 million cut to USC funding.

Ms Butler said places like USC Caboolture will be hit hardest by the Turnbull Government’s $2.2 billion of cuts to Australian universities.

“Susan and I are very concerned about the impact of these cuts on students across Australia, including those at USC Caboolture,” Ms Butler said.

“Data released by Universities Australia indicated that 10,000 people could miss out on a place at university due to these harsh cuts,” “We’ve also seen analysis that revealed low and middle income areas will be hurt most by the $2.2 billion of university cuts,” “Students at USC Caboolture are understandably concerned about what the future of their studies will look like with these cuts on the horizon.” Ms Butler said.

Ms Lamb said “When Terri and I asked the students what they thought about the Government’s proposed cut to their university’s funding, they were very concerned.

“The students were eager to sign our

USC Student Representatives were keen to speak with their local MP about their roles at USC petition and get involved to send a message to Mr Turnbull,” “Last year, Labor worked with student groups across the country to fend off the Turnbull Government’s attempts to increase course fees. The Government didn’t succeed, so now they’re coming through the back door, trying to cut university funding. It’s another fight that we’re prepared to take up with the Government this year.”

Apart from speaking with local students about the cuts to higher education, Ms Butler and Ms Lamb met with staff and Student Representatives to discuss the campus’ culture and how USC is settling in to the Longman community.

Ms Lamb said “After 16 years of Caboolture’s QUT campus, we have a new neighbour in town – the University of the Sunshine Coast.

“It was a really valuable exercise, meeting the students and experiencing the campus’ fantastic community culture.”

Terri, Susan and Federal Labor will continue to work with student groups in Longman to oppose the Turnbull Government’s cuts to higher education, including USC. Members of the community are encouraged to add their voice to Labor’s petition, calling on the Government to drop their cuts.

It is 2038 and the World Youth Political Forum has just completed its work. It has compiled a list of recommendations for new legislation: strong new legislation outlawing racism and bigotry; new directives strengthening fair rights for the working class and new laws to raise the minimum wage globally. Over the last twenty years, greater youth involvement in politics has cast aside populist leaders at the ballot box and led to political reform.

With the involvement of youth in politics, progress like this does not have to be a pipe dream.

Youth Interest laws that directly affect them and it is imperative that more youth get involved and play a part in shaping their own futures. From recent events in politics, it is clear that young people do want to have their say. The Australian Marriage Postal Survey, statistics showed that 65,000 new young voters enrolled to vote. This shows that when the youth get the chance to have a say on important issues, they will jump at the opportunity.

Young people also bring valuable skills to the table. They are generally very technologically savvy, which is an advantageous skill to have in future politics, with the world so reliant on social media for its information.

The future of Australia’s youth is shaped by politics. So it is vital that youth start to make a contribution to their own future.

At a personal and immediate level, young people can join youth branches of political parties such as Young Labor, attending political rallies and engaging with current affairs and forming opinions on topics that are of importance to the country that they live.

Autonomous Cars on The Rise

Every year 1.3 million people die in car accidents. Could the invention of autonomous cars reduce this?

Autonomous, or self-driving cars are cars that use artificial intelligence to operate.

They use a range of sensors, lasers, radars, cameras and GPS to take us where we need to be without any effort and boast that they safer than human driven cars.

Self-driven cars would dramatically reduce the amount of human faulted accidents on the road. Most car accidents are caused by people being distracted, frustrated or unconcentrated while on the road. These are all things only humans can be. If cars were driven by robots, there would be no human faulted accidents. It is not a matter of if, it is a question of when these cars be over taking our roads.

American author, computer scientist, inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil suggests that we will be seeing these cars around in the not-too-distant future as soon as the year 2020. Kurzweil has successfully predicted technologies such as electronic watches, speech recognition and portable laptops a long time before these became a part of our everyday life.

In 2014 Kurzweil predicted that in 2020 ‘Self-driving cars begin to take over the

roads, and people won’t be allowed to drive on highways.’ So far, his prediction seems to be coming true.

We can evidence that Kurzweil’s bold prediction is not that far off. Many newer model cars today have robotically operated features such as parking sensors, auto pilot options and collision avoidance controls. These aren’t quite driverless cars, but if this technology keeps advancing, soon all these cars will be driverless. Already, Google and Tesla are starting to produce their own autonomous cars. While they are still in the process of being tested, they are well on the way to being on our roads. While new technology is exciting we need to consider the impacts.

What if after thousands of tests, these autonomous cars are released, and something goes wrong? Viruses and malfunctions could easily infect the cars’ software and cause accidents or someone could hack in and control the car. Maybe something even worse that no one has even thought of could happen.

Are these cars really worth the risk of even more fatal accidents? Or is the comfort and credible safety enough to trust these robots with our lives? While it is inevitable that automatic cars are coming, the decision is yours.

Membership and terms of reference for Queensland Anti-Cyberbullying Task Force A 14–member task force, bringing together young Queenslanders, parents, schools, communities and experts, will provide the Queensland Government with detailed advice and coordination on tackling cyberbullying.

Premier said author and journalist Madonna King will chair the Queensland Anti-Bullying Task Force, which will make recommendations for community and government action to reduce the incidence of cyberbullying. The Task Force is due to report by 31 August 2018.

“Madonna is an award-winning journalist and author. She has recently written ‘Being 14’ in which she interviewed 200 14-year-old girls across the country, talked to successful school principals, psychologists, CEOs, police, guidance and neuroscientists to reveal the social, psychological and physical challenges facing 14-year-old girls,” the Premier said.

“Madonna is passionate about this issue.

The Task Force members bring their own experiences and expertise to this important issue.”

“I want to ensure we help Queensland kids and their parents and guardians to deal with the issues of cyberbullying, by ensuring we have the tools and strategies available to them.”

The Premier said Member for Mansfield Corrine McMillan will serve on the Task Force and an Opposition Member of Parliament will also be invited to join.

“We need to work together as a community to address this issue. This is impacting on too many Australians,” she said.

State Cabinet was addressed by Federal eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant on the work of her office and how it will support the national effort.

“The Task Force will work in parallel with the national work that the Council of Australian Governments approved in Canberra this month and the work of the Queensland Family and Children Commission.”

Epic opportunities for students Local Beachmere student Harrison Denton has made a start on his career with the help of EPIC Assist (EPIC) and their schools program.

Working at The Beach Shak Café in Beachmere, Harrison has the full support of the EPIC team to learn on the job and complete his Certificate II in Hospitality.

Autumn Crocus or the Rain Lilly

Welcome to our latest gardening articles written by a passionate local Horticulturist, for our equally passionate local gardening community, living on Bribie Island and Surrounds. In the last article, I touched base on the various insect pests that have been plaguing our Citrus trees and ornamental plants during these last few, hot and humid summer months. I also mentioned how the Black Sooty mould is a by-product formed from the excess excreted sugars from the sap-sucking pests feeding on the new flush of foliage, and over time, a mouldy black substance becomes noticeable. And I also mentioned how the sap sucking aphids, scale and mealybugs are protected by some industrious ants. If you look closely at the infestation you will see ants on the stems on guard. Why? Because they are farming the aphids excreted sugars and taking it back to the nest. It’s incredible to watch!

Now the beneficial bugs are the insects that prey on the sap sucking pests and can whittle your pest infestation down in a few weeks once the larvae numbers increase and begin hunting.

Unfortunately, there is not much that predates on the leaf mining moth or larvae, although I did mention last article there are pheromone traps for leaf miner available, but there are lady birds which feed on mealy bugs. One species- “Cryptolaemus montrouzieri”, their larvae actually look much like the mealy bug to the untrained eye except they are larger in size than the mealy bugs themselves and they move much faster when they are hunting too. The adult “Cryptolaemus” lady beetle is black in colour, and like all lady birds, they often land on you when you get close to the infested tree when they are flourishing and feasting. Interestingly, Australian lady beetles and larvae were exported to the United States way back in 1880s for biological control of white cushiony scale pest infestations and subsequently helped saved the California Citrus industry from decimation. It absolutely astounds me that some 130 odd years ago they succeeded in biological farming! Now when it comes to aphids, there is also a lady bird that loves to feed on these also and the female will often lay her eggs not far from the infestation in preparation for the food source. This aphid eating lady bird named (Coelophora inaequalis) in the picture below, had just pounced on an aphid and then turned its back on the colony as it begins to eat its prey. The adults are generally red to orange with black spots and are voracious feeders indeed. Well that’s all on munching lady birds this segment, stay tuned for next issue and I will elaborate a bit more on other beneficial insects in the garden!

Well it is Autumn, and it has been raining, so just had to include the Autumn Flowering CrocusZephyranthes candida. I took this shot in one of my customers yards in Banksia Beach in the beginning of March (Hi Ken and Frankie). They make great border planting specimens and when they are in full bloom, its candy to the eyes indeed. Unfortunately, they do not flower for long, but they do come out en masse after rainfall and hence why they are also referred to as the Storm Lilly. Zephyranthes candida is a bulb and when planted or divided tends to form neat little clumps relatively quickly which affords them to be divided again and replanted easily to form an informal border over time. The long narrow glossy green foliage is almost cylindrical and looks a little like chives but grows to about 25 cm long. The White flower has six petals and also has six stamens and is delicate to behold and is why it’s also referred to by its common name; the ‘Autumn Crocus’. As it is not a true Crocus but delicate in appearance like the Crocus genus. Grows well in full sun to part shade in the subtropics and thrives right here on Bribie island.

Awesome- Its Autumn at Last!

Well as I write this column in the beginning of March, the temperatures have dropped a little and some welcome rainfall had finally arrived. The grass is truly green and lush, and most plants are flourishing accordingly, including the weeds for that matter. In comparison to a few weeks ago with temperatures in the high thirty’s and very uncomfortable humid conditions, today, as I work in the drizzling rain planting plants on my latest project, I am singing on the inside as I say to myself, “Autumn has finally arrived at last”. Autumn is a perfect time to check your mulch and see if the moisture is seeping through to the soil surface, some fine particle mulches can compact overtime, so it’s vital to scrape back the old mulch and turn it over with a rake to allow air and moisture to penetrate to the plant roots.

I was on a consult last month and noticed that most of the plant problems were associated to thick layers of compacted mulch fines on sandy soils. When I scraped the mulch back in question, and it was the morning after a thunder storm, you could almost blow the fine dry mulch fines below with your breath, it was that dry! Another thing I noticed on a couple of properties was mulch layers pressed up around the weep holes of buildings, I always pull the mulch away from the walls of the house and lay a narrow course of gravel about 300mm wide to separate the organic matter and to help deter any white ants. If you have old stumps close to your building or rotting away in the back yard these can attract termites also, so its always best to grind them away if you can. While on the subjects of termites, if you have a water tank or two, make sure you have the overflow plumbed into the storm water drain otherwise the soil will always be saturated around the base of your tank and attract white ants searching for moisture as well.

Now back to the weeds, have you ever noticed that your weeds are getting more and more resistant to herbicide applications? I am very much a sustainable gardener but sometimes in the course of my work its is necessary to apply herbicides to assist in controlling weeds before they flower or set seed in lawns and gardens and I have also noticed that after a couple of days of rainfall some of the treated weeds seem to revive themselves again. Interestingly, I have been watching over the last few years how the weed steaming technology is being incorporated into local councils. This device is a mobile plant that provides the steam and the operator takes the high- pressure hose and spray lance and boils the weeds instantly, now, I prefer this option as no chemicals are used, but its not practical for the small operator as the system is costly and cumbersome to set up but as soon as one becomes affordable and reliable I am in!

With all the humidity and rainfall last month, pests and diseases have become established also, and powdery mildew has become rampant in Tomatoes, Capsicums, Cucumbers, Zucchini, grape vines, Roses and Crepe Myrtles. Rust, also in Geraniums and Black Spot on roses to name a few. Have you tried the milk recipe? If not well worth a shot. Add 40% Milk and dilute with 60% water and apply with a spray bottle to both sides of the leaves in the mid to late afternoon on a sunny day and this should be repeated Bribie Island & All Surrounds every 10 days for optimum results.

Letter of Appreciation to Hairdressers with Hearts and Bribie’s Got Your Back My name is Margaret also known as AuAty Marg.

Early December I was a victim of elder abuse, I was kicked out of my home by my eldest son, due to many reasons. åI was lucky eånough that I had some close friends that I was able to stay for the first week, however this was not going to be an ongoing situation.

Many things go through your mind when you are put in this situation, what did I do wrong, I have no money, where am I going to live. Then depression hits you, your self-worth is gone, you feel useless unable to do anything. You blame yourself for

everything.

In my case I did go through this, but I had a lot of support from friends and the community, long-time friends Michael and Dianne, they took me in, I stayed with them for a week or so Diane helped me with appointments with housing commission and emergency housing. Things that were available at that time.

My hair dresser was told of my situation, she is also the founder of Hairdressers with Hearts and Bribie’s Got Your Back, helping men, women and children who are experiencing domestic violence and elder abuse. I have known my hairdresser for many years and have a very good friendship as well. Sonia was very forth coming and let me stay at her home while she was house sitting on Bribie Island, it gave me peace of mind and allowed me to relax as much as I could over the Christmas period, and told me

that there was no need to hurry to move out when they finish the house sit.

At 79 years of age I would never of thought of this happening to me. I would really like to thank everyone who took the time and helped me through this period of my life . Not just few family members or friends but the community of Bribie Island, it has been over whelming the support I have received.

A huge thank you to Michael and Dianne opening their home and storing what little furniture I had, Sonia from Hairdressers with Hearts, Bribie Got Your Back and also her husband Aaron and two children Oscar and Willow, who opened their home and hearts to me and made me feel like part of their family, Tammy a volunteer (not just a volunteer but much more) of Hairdressers with Hearts and Bribie’s Got Your Back, I

can’t thank you enough for your help in sourcing house hold items that I needed to make my new home comfortable and for the emotional support.

The monster lurking in your telephones

[ I am not a Child Psychologist, not even any sort of Psychologist.

I am a parent and a grandparent, with all the concerns and vulnerabilities that goes with that, when it comes to the welfare of my, or any- one else’s children and grand-children. I am moved to write this because of those concerns. I have researched and used material referenced by the American Academy of Paediatrics and journalistic sources from The Australian Newspaper. ]

That process usually works pretty well, but a new and different threat to the welfare of our children has slipped slowly through our doors and resides quietly amongst the electronic social media devices we keep in our homes ; the principal residence of this threat is the “ smart phone “.

This is a device which has quietly taken over our daily lives, I witness its hold on people as they enter trains, take a seat and look at their smart phone. You can see its hold on people in restaurants, in shopping centres and even, with the help of Blue Tooth, in our motor vehicles as we cruise along our freeways.

You all know what a smart phone is… and you will also know just how it can, if you let it, make your life resonate to its demands. You will also know that much spoken social conversation has ended between humans – it, human conversation, has been replaced by texting, sexting, gifs and pixels.

Those of us of who have reached thirty years or more of life, have the advantage of knowing a world that was not dominated by smart phones and we have the capacity to still discern real life from the life that is portrayed on the screen of your smart phone.

Sure, we know how to use it, we can be entertained by it, we can bank with it, we can conduct our business with it, our love life can be enhanced by it, we can shop with it but we still maintain some element of control over the smart phone, for us it is sophisticated tool to be used to add extra dimensions to our life.

But, do we know what they, smart phones, are capable of doing to our children ? Do we understand that, in fact, we are harbouring a deadly threat to the social and mental welfare of our children ? Do we understand that if we, as parents and caring adults, fail to confront this threat we condemn a generation of children to a world that has no other reference point to the vicissitudes of life other than their smart phone ??

And, generally speaking, most of us, parents that is, quietly go about our business, doing the best we can, usually guided by common-sense, examples from others and some referral to our parents’ examples.

Anticipating that response I refer you to some recent examples of children who, completely influenced by the malicious and evil messages they received on their smart phones, have taken their own lives !! Dolly Everett in the Northern Territory was one of those young people.

Are you aware that Federal authorities refer to examples of smart phones texts from one child to another which encouraged that child to “ cut your wrist, bleed out and die, you useless piece of rubbish ! “ [ Or words to that effect…]

You may ask, do they really know what they are saying ? Well, I don’t know…but they send them, and, in my opinion the intent is very clear, as are the words.

I am aware of primary school teachers who have reported and recorded texts on smart phones of children six, seven and eight years of age, which are explicitly sexual and do not come from preying adults but which come from other children in the school class !!

They fear the impact this technology is having on young people and there are growing concerns over the smart phone’s connection to mental health – some psychologists believe we are setting ourselves up for a public health crisis. “ I have paraphrased from the same article.

The American Academy of Paediatrics has drawn a ttention to some of the effects smart phone use can have on children…

• Contribute to sleep deprivation.

• Promote sedentary behaviour which in turn encourages obesity.

• Effects of discomfort on eyes, pains in back, hands, shoulders neck and thumbs.

• Inhibit the development of social skills.

• Contribute to high levels of anxiety and depression.

Do these children really know what they are saying ? Again, I don’t know…but they know what to say and how to refer to sexual organs in specific and lewd contexts.

Suggestions have been made by the Cyber Safety Charity, The Carly Ryan Foundation, that Police should have the power to ban cyber bullies from social media for varying periods of time.

So what does all this mean ? Does it really matter ?

An Auckland school, the Kowhai Intermediate School, has asked parents to ban their children from using social media for the two years that their children are at the school. The effect of this ban has been obvious and highly beneficial.

What we are talking about is “ cyber bullying “ It is easy to do, there are no consequences of any substance to the perpetrators who are invariably other children.

We are facing an enormous issue, the size and scope of which, many of us simply do not understand.

I quote from Nikki Gemmell, a journalist for the Australian Weekend Magazine, dated 24 February, 2018, “ It is the underbelly of our children’s’ screen saturated lives ; a shadowy world we parents often don’t know about. But many of us witness the changing child and feel queasy. The tiny heads bowed.

The curiosity sapped. The spark of brimful life lost. The aggressive tantrum when a screen is taken from them and they become someone else. “ That is an insightful description of a clear and present danger to our children. “ Two large Apple corporate investors

It is not for me to preach to parents about how to manage their children. That is not the reason why I write this. I write this to act as an alarm bell, ringing in the spaces of our homes, to alert you all to the fact that this is not a local fad to be dismissed, as I have previously stated “ as flamboyant flapdoodle.”

We are confronting a serious social and medical threat to our children. It is that real !!

There really is a monster lurking in your smart phone and it will claim you and damage your children.

The Queensland Anti-Bullying Taskforce (the Taskforce) will provide advice and coordination in relation to developing and implementing an anti-bullying framework for Queensland that will bring together children, parents, schools, communities and experts to counter bullying, harassment and violence amongst young people.

The Taskforce will work to foster creative community-driven solutions that use contemporary ways of engaging, including social media platforms and multimodal communication. Members will harness grass-roots ideas and bestpractice research to develop and oversee strategies and initiatives that address the complex causes of bullying and cyberbullying.

Taskforce members will be key in developing and drawing on community relationships to ensure that everyone can be part of addressing these challenges.

Empowering and engaging young people in particular, is a significant part of delivering effective solutions.

Responsibilities will include: • Develop a proposed Framework for Addressing Bullying (the Framework), presenting recommendations for community and government action to reduce the incidence of bullying and cyber-bullying by 31 August 2018 • Advise government on the development of a program of activities under the Framework • Advise government on resources, best practices and other strategies to prevent and address bullying behaviour in order to provide appropriate training and intervention • Consult with the Queensland community to gain the insights of those affected by bullying and harness grassroots ideas on ways to tackle the issue • Educate and engage Queenslanders to create a community that practices positive attitudes and behaviours and promotes a culture of non-violence and respectful relationships • Act as a liaison point between the community and government to encourage ownership of initiatives • Young people needing support can call the Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800.

Portuguese Style Fish Fillets – Filets de Peixe Ingredients: 2 lbs fish fillets – (preferably cod but you can use any flaky white fish, whiting) 2 eggs 1 tbsp water flour salt & pepper garlic powder (optional) 1 lemon

Oil for frying (preferably corn or vegetable – about 1 and 1/2 cup) 1 tbsp olive oil Garnish: Lemon wedges, olives, sauteed onion

Instructions: Start this step when you are ready to fry the fish. Cut the fillets into serving size portions that are approximately 1/2 inch thick.

Season with the salt, pepper and garlic to your taste.

Squeeze the juice from half of the lemon on top of the fish and set aside for about 5 minutes. (Do not let the lemon sit longer because the acid will begin cooking the fish and it will disintegrate.)

Beat the eggs with the water in a medium bowl and set aside.

Place the flour in a bowl large enough to be able to coat the fish evenly.

Place enough oil in a heavy frying pan to reach 1/2 inches deep. Add the olive oil.

Turn the heat on med-high.

(Meanwhile be sure you are ready to begin cooking the fish, if not turn off the burner.)

Using one dry and one wet hand method, coat the fish with the egg, shaking excess egg off back into the bowl.

Coat the egg soaked fish in flour with the dry hand, pat to shake off excess flour and place on a try. *Test the oil by placing one tip of the fillet into the oil. The fish should sizzle but the oil should not be smoky.

Place about 4-6 pieces of fish onto the hot oil and cook for about 4 minutes on each side until golden brown.

Adjust the heat as you notice it gets too hot. Add more oil as needed to complete the frying process.

Place the fish on brown paper lunch bags or paper towels to absorb any grease.

Serve with Portuguese rice and garnish with lemon wedges olives and onions (optional)

AFAQ recently invited the local Enoggera Military based Gallipoli fishing club (GFC) to compete in there local Bribie Island and Moreton Bay region fishing cathch & Release) compitition. This is a great opportunity to socialise and partake in some good natured banter. Following AFAQs win in 2017, GFC where keen to put up a good fight.

18 fishermen from AFAQ vs 18 Fisho’s from the GFC competed over the weekend with a mixed bag of fish recorded. Although lots of undersized fish where caught and not recorded GFC accounted for a total of 43 legal

Brim caught on plastic fish. 11 Species were caught to include Flathead(11), Bream(11), Mackerel(5), Whiting(4), Moses Perch(3), grunter(3), Tarwhine(2), Sweetlip (2), Trevally(1) and flounder (1).

AFAQ caught 24 fish for total of 24 fish totalling 3.855cm.

Members fished the beacons around Bribie Island, Bribie passage sand bars/ bridge and adjoining canals/creeks.

Successful methods of fishing included trolling with small lures like the ZEREK Tango Shad (50mm), flicking Zman Soft plastics and bait (live nippers).

Key captures included 65cm Flathead, 38cm and 37cm Whiting, 37cm Bream and 65cm Mackerel.

All members enjoyed a great weekends fishing where in the end it came down to military precision and a scripted battle plan that carried the GFC over the line for the win with GFC president Greg “Flip” Herdson leading the way with a total of 19 fish totalling 722cm (7 metres in fish) in length aptly supported by the runner up GFC’s Neil Sharp with 5 fish totalling 189cm.

Dan O’connell said congratulations to GFC, this proves that there are plenty of mixed vieraty of fish still in the passage.

Retiring rugby league chairman leaves legacy

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni has paid tribute to a proud Queenslander who took on the toughest job in rugby league and charted a new course for the game in Australia.

‘And it shone through him when he played for English club Warrington during their table-topping 1972-73 season, during which they lost just one game.

“Retiring Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) chairman John Grant – a former Kangaroo, ICT industry guru and successful sports administrator – leaves a lasting legacy for the code,” said Mr de Brenni.

“Queensland’s fighting spirit still shines in every State of Origin and through every member of Queensland’s Palaszczuk Government, and its impact in rugby league will continue through the appointment of the new ARLC chairman, former Queensland Labor Premier and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Corporation chairman, Peter Beattie.”

“Tagged a ‘token Queenslander’ in 1972 by the southern press, John was the only player named in that year’s World Cup squad who was still living north of the NSW border,” he said.

“Of course, we know today there was far more to this bearded three-quarter from Brisbane Souths than initially met the eye – he was in fact the embodiment of the key Queensland qualities of pride, passion and perseverance.

“These qualities led to John, in 2012, taking the reins of Australian rugby league’s new central governing body, leading the game into a new era of opportunity with his considerable corporate experience, enormous integrity and unbridled tenacity “Under his stewardship, rugby league in Australia has become safer and fairer on field and off, with effective concussion management rules, a robust club funding model, and support for development of women’s rugby league.

“And the results speak for themselves – back to back World Cups for the women’s national team.”

Mr de Brenni said Mr Grant had displayed the quintessential Queensland spirit back in his days playing with Souths Logan Magpies under supercoach Wayne Bennett, who at the time was experimenting with sound recordings of artillery fire in the dressing sheds to pump up his players before a big game.

“John displayed Queensland’s fighting spirit as an Australian representative alongside fellow icons of the game

“He displayed it wearing the Queensland jumper against New South Wales, long before the days of State of Origin, and on his representative tours of New Zealand.

Mr de Brenni – whose Ministerial portfolios include Housing and Public Works as well as Digital Technology – said Mr Grant earned his engineering degree at the University of Queensland before working for four years as a public sector engineer, where he developed his passion for the then-emerging industry of information technology.

“John’s passion for IT led to him landing a position with the multinational IBM and eventually buying into the firm that evolved into Data 3, which formed supply agreements with governments across Australia and of which he eventually became managing director,” said Mr de Brenni.

From February 28 till March 3rd, 2018, the 11th annual NRL Rugby Masters tournament was held at the Runaway Bay Junior Leagues club on the Gold Coast.

This year there were 99 male teams and 3 women’s. Teams came from the England, New Zealand, Norfolk Island and across Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia.

“He was also influential in driving the NRL’s $150 million digital strategy to future proof the sport, ensuring fans can watch games from their mobile devices, and providing opportunities to grow the game in Australia.

The format is that each team play five games and even if you win, lose or draw, there are no winners (except the NRL Masters), because no scores are kept and played over two 25-minute halves. The tournament is for comradery and fun for the “old” guys and gals, whose brain said they still have what it takes, but the body thinks otherwise.

“John is often referred to as a Captain of the IT industry – he a former chairman of the Australian Information Industry Association and, since 2008, a member of the industry’s ARN Hall of Fame.

The Sunshine Coast Old Buzzards consists of men that have played in teams from our local comps including Bribie Island and Beachmere and that are over 35 years young.

“Even today John freely admits that all the lessons learned as a Queensland and Australian representative footballer have served him well in business – discipline in the face of adversity and, above all, that determined Queensland spirit that means never giving up.”

This year’s locals included Graham Allen (GA), Brooksie, Greg Clarke, Dennis Bate, Scotty Rowston, Johnny Innes, Danny Dawes, Brendon Mills and Mark Shiels. It was Mark’s first game without his brother in the team. His brother Adam passed away last year and the boys had a few memorial words printed on the front of their playing jerseys as a sign of respect.

Also the team had great sponsorship this year like every year this showing community spirit.

The players (boys) stayed on the Gold Coast during the tournament and I’m told that most of the head injuries suffered were from the “bar” department, NOT from being knocked stupid on the field. It is also a known fact, that all live stock stores have ran out of rapid gel when the boys returned home. “ I wonder what they took for their headaches then???”

The fun part of the trip were the awards, of which there were four. Firstly Millsy (Brendon Mills), miraculous try. He tripped before the try line and his size and momentum rolled him over the line.

Secondly, the worst player award went to Millsy as well. Third went to Dennis Bate (for being himself), he was sent off and last, but not least the player of the series went to Danny Dawes (I think Danny invented that one for himself.) To confuse the refs, even more, all the old Buzzards wore the number 18 on their Jersey’s.

Next years event is being planned and The NRL Masters Comp will be held from the 6th-9th March 2019.

by Phil Cheetham following a flurry of attacking play from both teams.

The standard of play from both teams considering the blustery conditions was a credit. As half time approached Josh Rankin followed up on a goalmouth skirmish to equalise for the Tigers.

Reds Off to a 2018 Cracker Season Queensland Reds fans are coming out the woodwork after the Reds won back to back matches following a 20-14 win at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday 10th March. This is the first time since 2014 that the Reds have kicked off to a positive season start and new rookie coach Brad Thorne, who won the World Cup with the All Blacks in 2011 has been instrumental in the Reds turn around.

Some may say that the season is early and they will be right, although if your witnessed the counter try at Suncorp Stadium scored by fullback Aidan Toua (View on Fox Sports News Online), you will begin to understand that a few things have changed at the Reds. Last month the Queensland Parliament officially opened. My work is well and truly underway to deliver better outcomes for Pumicestone having questioned Ministers on their commitment to improving the quality of our roads, particularly the Bribie Island Road, and seeking answers on the provision of police and health services in our area. Keep an eye on my Facebook page and website for details of how you can get involved in supporting these important issues so that your voice can be heard.
