Your August Issue (28) printed a letter from a student on the subject of “Respect.�

First of all I would like to congratulate him/her on the eloquent and professional manner in which it was written. (No I am not a teacher) but the teachers at Bribie Island High School should be congratulated on turning out such a mature and articulate student. *All too often we criticise our politicians with rude and berating comments and certainly don’t give them respect but then they don’t deserve it.

The context of the student’s letter was all about “Respect.� What a better world it would be if everyone gave each other respect regardless of our faults , creeds and race.

The letter should be sent to Parliament House in Canberra and read out to all the members. Then maybe they will see how they are letting down our youth (and us all ) in this country. * Also children learn from example and hearing the bad and insulting language that is used by the Politicians does not set the standards we expect from our representatives.

Well done, “student�, we need more letters like that. Jean We have decided to place this article again in case you missed it!

Respect is becoming an archaic value

As Australian politics implodes and we are left red faced in the modern world, I ask myself – has the value of respect disappeared entirely?

Aretha Franklin posed the idea that in order to respect someone, you must first understand that person. You must make an effort to understand what they stand for – their attitudes, values and beliefs and you must show an understanding for peoples differing opinion, but if the current political climate is anything to go by, it would suggest that this theory is no longer in play.

I myself do not know much about politics – I don’t have to vote but what I do know is that, over the past week, our politicians have shown very little respect to one another. At Bribie High school, we have four school values: with respect of the utmost importance. Respect one another and respect for our community – none of which these politicians have shown.

Firstly, the in-fighting that has been reported shows that none of them have a ‘real’ friend within their own party. The ousted one and then three of them went up against each other, trying to, behind the backs of the others, gain support for themselves. Secondly, the impact on society has been enormous. It has filled our television screens, our news feeds and paper for over a week, with one clear message: look after yourself. This juxtaposes the very thing that makes society work.

We, as a community, need to lead by example. We need to be more tolerant of each other, listen to each other’s opinion, support each other in our time of need. Pick up that piece of paper that you are walking past, get of our phones and interact with those around us. We need to be the solution.

Regardless of who you support, one thing is clear: Australian Politicians

Letters to the Editor... need to start displaying the the value that is at the core of Australian society, that goes hand in hand with mateship and that has driven us to be who we are today: RESPECT. I found the article by Harvey Fewings most interesting. I am the mother of a man who served in the Australian armed forces at the highest level of his chosen field in many wartorn countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan. I was proud of his commitment and willingness to serve and uphold the standards that we have in our country, He was prepared to offer all he could as an Australian serviceman, many of his mates did give their lives. As Mr Fewings points out, he was fighting for these standards in a country that did not have such standards, that is why he was there! It seems most unreasonable to me that such actions can be judged by people who were not there, who did not experience the situation and who have never experienced such a situation.

If I was a mother raising a son today and his dream was to be a soldier, I would strongly advise him not to put his life at the disposal of his superiors, as I believe that they are not worthy of such trust. I wonder whether at the recruitment phase, young men and women are told that even if they are following commands of their superiors, their actions will be subject to scrutiny by a civil court at some time in the future. I suspect not! In my opinion, Australia has become top-heavy with lawyers and bottom light with plumbers and tradesmen and women in general.

Common sense seems to be a skill that is being lost. I can't help but wonder if the decision makers and the upper echelon of all fields are just creating jobs for their out of work lawyer friends.

Come on Australia get your nose out of the books and down on the ground and see what's going on in real life.

How dare any of these lefty academics - that in many cases were not even born at the time of the events they condemn make any comment on the actions of our military.

If these people feel so strongly regarding war crimes I suggest they take a look at the Taliban and other Islamic radicals for a start. To say nothing of Zimbabwe, Mau Mau, the Congo and the current situation in South Africa before even looking at Asia.

As once again I recall Battle of Britain day September 15th 1940 I have no doubt that there are people that would condemn "The Few" for defending us against all odds.

War is hell. It is a simple matter of "do it to them before they do it to you"

This month I had the privilege to meet the team at Zente Kitchens, a medium sized enterprise owned by Managing Director, Brent Reader who has been in the cabinet-making industry for over 27 years.

Located in Lear Jet Drive, Caboolture, Zente Kitchens is a one-stop-shop when it comes to designing, manufacturing and installing kitchens and I can tell you from my experience, this is no ordinary business.

One of the indictors of a confident leader is when they invite their team to be part of an interview with an unknown freelance journo. When I arrived at Zente Kitchens, I was taken into the staff room which looked more like a family designer kitchen complete with cook books, ornaments and two inset microwave ovens.

Brent was accompanied by Kerrie Radford, Sales and Design Manager; Skye Daly, Design Consultant and Naomi Perry, Design Consultant. Each of these professional ladies bring a unique set of skills to this business.

Kerrie has been in the interior design game since 2003 and has qualifications in Kitchen and Bathroom Interior Design. In 2018, Kerrie was a judge for the HIA Kitchen & Bathroom Design Awards. Skye is a qualified Interior Designer from Canada and has worked as a design consultant since 2010.

Most of our team are family people which makes us one big family. We are very good at everything we do, however we would love to do more home renovation designing and installations.

When is your busiest time?

Our crazy season in between September and December – everyone wants to get the new kitchen in before Christmas.

Kristen Boller (Apprentice) & Brent experts from interior designers to trades people to ensure that a customer’s dream kitchen design matches the expectation. Brent said, “We have been able to employ and sustain a team with extensive experience in the industry which allows us to offer a range of design ideas and options to our clients,” he said. “While the majority of what we do today is ‘new home kitchens,’ we offer a no obligation free home visit to assist people to renovate their older kitchens.”

Dallas Grenenger, Kerrie Radford, Skye Daly, Brent Reader, Naomi Perry and provides the Zente Clients with a beautiful space to visual and plan a new kitchen. While I love viewing sexy showrooms, I couldn’t wait to be escorted into the workshop.

As we moved through the large workshop, I was introduced to one of the 6 apprentices employed at Zente Kitchens, Kristen Boller. Kristen has been nominated for Female Apprentice of the Year in 2018 which is a credit to both Kristen and the Managing Director, Brent Reader for having the courage to maintain a training environment for apprentices. Brent said, ““We are proud of what we have been able to achieve at Zente Kitchens.

I think that it is important to create training environments for young people whilst at the same time providing our experienced team with an opportunity to share their knowledge,” he said. “Much of our success probably comes from the passion and loyalty demonstrated by the team – it is fair to say that as a leader of any business, you need to be focussed on the business and workflow

The large double window in the staff kitchen provides an excellent view to the workshop - I couldn’t help by noticing this large red robotic machine taking large sheets of timber and cutting patterns of the custom-designed kitchen cabinets - the close-up view was even more impressive.

On the same level as the upstairs staff kitchen are the design, sales and drafts team workspaces along with the MD’s office complete with an oversize work planner which consumed the entire eastern wall on Brent’s office.

Bribie Car Care Donates to Drought Victims

Bribie Car Care is a locally owned and operated family business on Bribie Island. They wanted to help the farmers who are severely affected from the current drought.

Scott the Owner of Bribie Car Care and his children were looking for a charity to raise funds for, collectively the family decided in September they would donate $10 on every car service to the farmers for the drought relief through Salvation Army for the month of September.

Scott has been servicing locals’ cars since 2004 said, “he is extremely lucky to have all his children working with him at Bribie Car Care”, “I am so proud of them and what they have achieved over the years and wanting to donate money to the drought victims was their idea” Jodie, Marketing Manager of Bribie Car Care said “we wanted to give back to such a great cause, living on Bribie, we are very lucky with our surroundings here and we just can’t imagine how hard this drought has affected the farmers.

She also said, “these guys are struggling at the moment and we believe it is only right to give back to them and lend a helping hand where we can, we hope that by doing our bit we can help take some of the pressure off them.”

On the 19th of September Bribie Car Care had raised $1200 and still going strong till the end of September.

Locals lead this year’s Beachmere Community Carols Beachmere will hold its annual Community Carols on Saturday, 15 December in Clayton Park and the organisers are asking for people interested in being involved to get in touch.

Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) will host the event as usual but, this year, there will be some surprises.

“Several choirs are involved this year and we are asking people with talent or enthusiasm to get involved and ‘lead a carol’,” BANG President Karen Harris advised.

“Instead of a concert, we are really trying to get everyone involved in the carol singing and we have local groups, bands and entertainers lined up to lead a carol.”

“All the other fun activities: gift stalls, food vans and surprise visits are still included, but we want even more locals to be involved. So, if you can play an instrument, hold a tune or just have enough courage to carry it off, get in touch and get involved.”

“We will also be organising the Beachmere Christmas Lights Competition and the Christmas Lights Trail again this year so we hope people will start planning their display.”

The Lions Foundation has been busy trying to raise $500,000.00 for drought affected Queensland farmers by the end of August. Currently 60% of our Farmers are now in drought and Lions Clubs throughout the state are banding together to increase their support to farmers in need.

Amanda, from the Beach Shak Cafe, organised a delicious ‘Parma for a Farmer’ lunch, which raised over $600.

Produce was donated by the Beachmere Butchery.

Roll up Beachmere and Surrounds for the annual Lioness Fair to be held at Clayton Park on Saturday 13 October, 8am till 2pm.

The grand finale will be the Dry Boat race between our two local schools.

It’s going to be a fabulous event, so mark it in your calendar and support the Beachmere Lioness Club.

There are still some stalls available, priced from $25 to $45, and local Beachmere Community Groups can have a free information stall to promote their organisation.

Aged care to come Beachmere community bank under parliamentary

Beachmere Community Bank continues to move ahead with a refreshed Steering Committee and pledges flowing in.

The new Steering Committee members are continuing their training and will be out and about in the Beachmere, Bribie, Ningi and Caboolture communities sharing their knowledge of community banking and how you can get involved.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced a wideranging parliamentary review into aged care across the State.

“Care for our aging residents is of major concern and it’s an issue that touches every single Queenslander,” the Premier said.

“Whether it’s our parents, our grandparents, elderly friends or other aging people in our community, the care of our older Queenslanders must be a priority.

“Labor governments reform and that, by its very nature, means that we lead.

“And it’s now time to show courage and leadership to confront an issue that has been avoided for too long.

“Too many families are troubled by its cost and complexity of aged care in Queensland.

“We know it’s not good enough and that it must be fixed and this parliamentary first is the first truly significant step in that process.”

The Premier said the issue deserved the same national attention as she had brought to domestic violence and cyber bullying.

“Therefore I will have it added to COAG, but it can’t end there,” she said.

“Following the vote on termination of pregnancy, my Healthcare Committee will begin examining all issues to do with what’s known as end-of-life care.

“That not only includes aged care, but palliative care and dying with dignity.

“I have watched carefully and closely as other jurisdictions have faced this issue.

“I have listened to those who have watched their loved ones suffer.”

New Councillor Code of Conduct to enforce higher standards in Local Government

A new Councillor Code of Conduct spelling out the minimum behaviour required of Local Government elected representatives has been released.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Code of Conduct, which takes effect in December, was the latest in a series of Local Government reforms being delivered by the Palaszczuk Government.

Its other Local Government reforms include a ban on political donations from property developers, the automatic suspension of Mayors and Councillors for a range of integrity offences, and a new power for the Local Government Minister to dismiss or suspend a Council, Councillor or Mayor in the public interest.

“This new Code of Conduct sets the bar high for Queensland’s elected Local Government representatives,” he said.

“It sets out the principles and standards of behaviour expected of Councillors and Mayors when carrying out their roles, responsibilities and obligations as the elected representatives of their communities.”

The new Code of Conduct has a strong focus on the three ‘R’s, namely:

• that councillors carry out RESPONSIBILITIES conscientiously and in the best interests of the council and the community;

• ensure their conduct does not reflect adversely on the REPUTATION of the council.

“Face-to-face training is available to all councillors to ensure they are fully aware of and ready to comply with the Code when it comes in on 3 December this year,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“Councillors who break the Code of Conduct can be reprimanded or ordered to attend training or counselling,” he said.

“They can also be ordered to publicly admit they’ve engaged in inappropriate conduct or be excluded from stated local government meetings.

“A Councillor in breach of the code can also be ordered to reimburse the local government for all or some of the costs arising from the Councillor’s inappropriate conduct.

All Councillors must declare that they will abide by this Code of Conduct when they are elected.

It applies to all Councils, except Brisbane City Council which has a separate Code.

Mr Bailey said the success of the campaigns showed how well using humour worked to get people talking about road safety. ‘‘Part of this is starting a discussion around why the community continues to accept death and serious injury as part and parcel of using our roads,” he said.

“More than 6500 people are hospitalised each year as a result of road trauma and 247 lives were lost last year alone.

“By working together, through initiatives such as Co-Lab, I’m hopeful that one day we can achieve our goal of zero death and injury on our roads.”

Society’s obsession with getting likes on social media is being used in a humorous way to deliver a serious message as part of this year’s Co-Lab Youth Road Safety Challenge.

Now in its third year, Co-Lab is a Palaszczuk Government initiative that brings young people together to create ads targeted at other young people, with the aim of reducing the road toll.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said this year’s theme, announced today during a visit to Wellers Hill State School, was “Let’s Drive the Road Toll Down to Zero”.

“The ads feature a woman taking a selfie with her dog and a man exercising on steps – situations where normally, a high number of likes or steps would be seen as good,” Mr Bailey said.

“However, we see the characters celebrating zero steps and likes, just as we as a community should be aiming towards zero deaths and injuries on our roads.”

Mr Bailey said previous Co-Lab campaigns were overwhelmingly successful, and he expected this year’s ads, launched during Queensland Road Safety Week, would reach even more people.

“Over the last two years Co-Lab has come up with Settle down stallion’ and ‘Chin up, phone down’ campaigns which together have reached more than 8.5 million people,” he said.

“The results from Co-Lab have been fantastic, demonstrating how ideas created by young drivers can help increase awareness on road safety issues.

“Road trauma has a devastating effect on families, friends and communities and we need to work together to help change community attitudes towards the road toll.

“The participants and the Government have really enjoyed the Co-Lab process and I think this campaign will resonate with young people and the wider community.”

Minister Grace welcomed the new campaign, which she said would help increase road safety and reduce the road toll on Queensland’s roads.

“We know that young and inexperienced drivers are especially vulnerable on our roads,” Ms Grace said.

“Anything we can do to increase road safety awareness and protect young drivers is a great initiative.”

This fact was highlighted by Rebecca Andrews, the Chaplain at Bribie Island State High School, who told us at a recent meeting about the number of students she sees on a daily basis who are struggling due to their home environments. She spoke about numerous cases of “cutting”, depression and suicide attempts.

The good news for people in Rebecca’s situation is that researchers at Australian Rotary Health are finding that early intervention can make a difference. Toorbul Esplanade Foreshore parkland to honour local

Toorbul is set to celebrate the life’s work of local legend Noel Downes, by proposing to name an area of foreshore park in front of the Toorbul Community Hall and Sports Centre ‘Noel Downes Place’ in his honour.

“He campaigned tirelessly to help raise the $100,000 needed to build the centre, hosting auction nights, Christmas parties and even wine and cheese events at his own home to help the community.

“I hope our youngergeneration will follow in Mr Downes footsteps and look at different ways they can contribute and support their community.”

Cr Savige said she fully supports the proposal.

“We will put the proposal out for public advertisement and discussion over the next month,” she said.

Queensland's lowest paid workers set to receive pay increase

assist VMR in fundraising

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace welcomed today’s decision of the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) to increase award rates of pay for Queensland’s lowest paid workers covered by the state industrial relations jurisdiction.

On Saturday, 8th September, at Poolworx on Goodwin Drive, Bongaree the Bribie Island Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) held a fundraiser with the assistance of the owners of Poolworx, Michelle and Anthony Spicer and staff.

The QIRC’s decision will see awards and allowances increased by 3.5% consistent with the recent Fair Work Commission annual wage review decision which applied to Queensland workers in the national fair work system.

Poolworx donated $2000 worth of goods to be raffled off during the day including a $1000 pool cleaner and a year’s worth of free pool servicing plus various auctions to take place during the following week. There were other sponsors involved as well.

Members of the VMR were in attendance and provided a sausage sizzle which proved popular and took in about $200 in the morning before packing up around 12.30pm.

“The Queensland Government’s submission to the State Wage Case backed a flow-on of the 3.5% wage increase,” Ms Grace said.

VMR computer system hacked On Friday evening, 7th September, the computer system of the VMR was hacked and was still out of action on Saturday afternoon. Concerns were that if it was not rectified fairly quickly safety issues could arise regarding rescues etc. The VMR member said if hackers can get to them they can get to anybody and for people on Bribie to be vigilant.

Recently, while walking my hounds along the footpath on the Bongaree waterfront, an unleashed dog that was on the sand next to its owner, barked, jumped the small wall and ran towards my dogs. I yelled “No” the owner called the dog and luckily it stopped. When she apologised I responded with “you wouldn’t have to say sorry if it was leashed” She became angry at me and said “Hey, we are all responsible for our own choices”.

Now I will admit that this statement bemused me, because really it wasn’t true. It may have been her choice to let her dog be on a no-dog beach, not on a lead in a leashed dog area, but her choice made my life uncomfortable and when I made it clear I was uncomfortable with her choice she didn’t take responsibility, she just became angry with me. I guess that was her choice too.

I was worried about her small dog, not because I thought my large dogs would hurt it, but if it attacked my dogs who would believe it was the small one that started it? And since this situation put my furkids safety at risk I have not walked my dogs

that way again, so her choice has impacted on my life.

Walking the rest of the way home I thought about her comment and realised that it really applied to a lot of people who look for a way to justify why they can’t be bothered being responsible for their own actions when it comes to their health and fitness.

Yes, it is your choice whether or not you stop smoking, lose weight, reduce your alcohol consumption, start exercising or eat a better choice of foods. But by not making better lifestyle choices, your decisions will impact on others and not just your friends and family.

So you are overweight, how does that impact? For a start it immediately raises your risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure etc.

And it won’t just be you who has to live with those health issues if they do happen.

Your family and friends will be the ones who may have to resuscitate you if you have a heart attack at the family BBQ, and they will be the ones who have to help you monitor your food if

Before You Start Find Your Favourite Music!

PLEASE START SLOWLY AND IF YOU BECOME UNCOMFORTABLE OR BREATHLESS STOP AND REST. Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises.

Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are to help with your co-ordination and are similar to what we do in Heartbeats classes. Put on some music that you enjoy with a beat that isn’t too fast. If the beat is a bit too fast then use every second beat. Remember exercising does becomes easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

Chair Elbow to Knee

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Reach up with both hands to a point that is comfortable for you. Keep one hand up and bring the other elbow down. At the same time lift the opposite knee and try and touch your elbow to your knee. Find the beat in your music and repeat slowly up to10 times Bring both arms down and rest Repeat with the other elbow and knee. Rest

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Have feet placed on the floor with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Find the beat in your music and “March” your opposite leg and arm while seated for 15 times. Rest Repeat again when you are ready

If you doubled that to 30 mins a weekday then the reduction would be 26%.

Now this may not seem like much until you have tripped over and broken a leg and have to wait for help because all of the ambulances are busy with people who have a disease that could have been stopped by them being responsible for their own health, then I bet you would think it was important.

And as much as I want to say “Ummmm maybe if you swapped some of the money you are flushing after your drinking or turning into smoke, you might be able to reduce your health issues” I don’t because that’s their excuse to prove it’s not their fault they “can’t get healthy”.

And if I did dare to say something like that I will be seen as one of those weird “Health Freaks” who wants to live a long and happy life and be able to do everything I want to do – weird I know.

Apparently when I’m 80 and still climbing mountains I will be miserable because I will only have had a wine now and then and not daily. At 85 while travelling around Europe on a pushbike I will be depressed because I missed out on chocolate biscuits every day and at 90 while walking along the beach I will be devastated that I only ever had fresh healthy tasty food when I went out and not chips and gravy.

But hey, thanks to the lady on the waterfront at Bribie, at least I will know that all of this is my fault because I have been responsible for the choices I made.

“Elder abuse has no place in our communities and I am in full support of the royal commission and action to support Queensland’s seniors.”

Ernie-James Galon completed his Diploma of Dental Technology from TAFE Queensland in 2007. He further completed a Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Technology (post-registration) at Griffith University in 2012. Becoming Dementia Friendly on Bribie Island A group of community minded people has formed to make Bribie Island and surrounds a Dementia Friendly Community.

We came together through our understanding that dementia doesn’t care who you are, it can affect anyone and it has touched all our lives.

General community understanding of dementia is poor but its incidence is on the increase. People with dementia and their loved ones can and do, feel misunderstood, marginalized and isolated. This can mean that people with dementia and their families find it very difficult to live in their own homes or continue to be active participants in the community.

As Service Manager of Bribie Respite & Support Services I meet people every day who are struggling with memory loss.

I see how family relationships become more stressful when one partner has dementia - or another form of health decline - and how those with declining health can feel a burden to their family.

The partner with fewer health issues often also goes into decline through stress and attempting to cope without support.

At Bribie Respite & Support Services we research the activities we run to stretch people with physical or memory decline. They are designed to be challenging but at a level that allows

people to participate and feel satisfied with their efforts. The combination of challenge and fun is a boost for morale.

On the 16th of September, Bribie Toastmasters competed at the Area 3 Toastmasters Conference held in Kilcoy Joannes will now go on to represent Area 3 and Bribie Toastmasters in the Moreton Division Speech Contest later this year.

Bribie Toastmaster Anne Iverson participated in her first International Competition with her heartfelt speech on making a difference to the lives of others one persona at a time. Although not placing this year Anne certainly showed how Toastmasters can give you confidence to present an amazing speech in the tough conditions of a contest.

I recently delivered a new UD tipper to Mareeba, just west of Cairns and on the way I stopped twice overnight, the first being in Sarina and the second night was in Cardwell, just south of Cairns. At Cardwell, I stayed at the Marine Hotel Motel, it is right opposite the beach and when you sit on the balcony, which is virtually on the street, you feel as though you could touch Hinchenbrook Island, it seems that close. Out further in the water you can see other islands scattered around and the water is a beautiful colour and looks very tempting except for one thing, crocodiles.

Anyhow, back to the hotel. I have never stayed in a place where I have been made to feel so welcome. The

Over 6.7 million litres of German beer was consumed over the three-week long celebration and inordinate amounts of lights created an exhilarating atmosphere. Many of these celebrations have now expanded from Germany and numerous people use the event as a time to celebrate their heritage or purely the exciting activities. In Brisbane, the largest Oktoberfest in Australia is held, and thousands of people arrive in the city to celebrate the old traditions. If you have not already been, Oktoberfest is a great family experience. The continuation of this historic festival is shown throughout the world with new aspects being added each year. It is truly great to see such a large number of people joining together to celebrate a memorable and unbelievable festival.

The commemoration of past traditions each year are remembered and honoured through Oktoberfest.

Bongaree Caravan Park to receive cabin refurbishment and bathroom upgrade

Bongaree Caravan Park is set for a major upgrade thanks to a $350,000 tender from Moreton Bay Regional Council that will see holiday cabins benefit from bathroom upgrades including new tiling and shower cubicles as part of the revamp.

Division 1 Councillor Brooke Savige said the cabin upgrade was certain to become a drawcard for the park.

“Bongaree Caravan Park has seen over 10,000 guests just last year so it’s important to ensure our holiday parks remain modern and inviting for families and holiday makers,” Cr Savige said.

Cr Savige said the project, which would involve the upgrade of 13 cabins including new tiling, replacing shower cubicles and fixtures will complement works carried out last year that saw the installation of the communal camp kitchen.

“Once the cabins are upgraded I am certain it will attract more people to Bongaree.”

Works will be staggered across the year to minimise disruption and ensure the park can continue to operate.

The project is expected to be completed next September, weather permitting.

“I’m very excited about this cabin upgrade project and I look forward to seeing it being used by our valued guests.”

Disaster management briefing aims to make state safer ahead of summer storm season

Disaster management stakeholders will take part in an important briefing today (Monday) to “better understand Queensland’s current and future risks”, according to Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford.

Mr Crawford said the annual Australian Government Annual Preparedness Briefing would allow Queensland government departments, local governments and non-government agencies to collaborate for the upcoming summer storm season.

“The Palaszczuk Government recognises that a critical part of building safe and resilient communities is by working with others to create a safer Queensland by better understanding our current and future disaster risks,” Mr Crawford said.

“At today’s briefing in Brisbane, the Bureau of Meteorology, Emergency Management Australia, the Australian Defence Force and Geoscience Australia will discuss what our summer season looks like and how we can work effectively together under Queensland’s disaster management arrangements.

Palaszczuk Government keeps paid leave for domestic violence thugs

Public servants who abuse their partners will continue to get up to an extra 10 days’ domestic violence leave a year thanks to the Palaszczuk Labor Government.

An LNP motion to deny the Queensland Government’s DV leave entitlement to perpetrators, and restrict it only to victims, was tonight defeated by 48 votes to 40.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said it was appalling that Labor MPs had supported extending an entitlement intended for victims of domestic violence to those responsible for it.

“The Not Now, Not Ever report did not recommend that perpetrators receive leave,” Ms Frecklington said.

“It is absurd and offensive to reward perpetrators of domestic and family violence with 10 days of taxpayer-funded leave.

Drivers are being reminded of the dangers of low-level speeding, in a re-run of the 'Let’s change the way we look at speed' road safety campaign, which starts today.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the campaign highlighted the dangers of low-level speeding on suburban roads, something many drivers refused to accept as a dangerous behaviour.

“Queensland Government research shows 94 per cent of people admit to speeding and nearly 50 per cent admit to exceeding the designated speed limit by up to 10km/h most of the time,” Mr Bailey said.

“People need to understand the danger of what they are doing, for the sake of themselves, their loved ones and the people they are endangering.

“On average, 58 people are killed and 295 seriously injured on Queensland roads annually in speed-related crashes, and many of those hospitalised will suffer the effects of their injuries for the rest of their lives.

“It’s time for drivers to change their behaviour and understand the real danger of what they are doing.”

Mr Bailey said the campaign, which originally aired in 2016, would coincide with the upcoming Queensland school holidays.

“The campaign shows a serious crash caused by low-level speeding on a suburban street,” Mr Bailey said.

“The power of the message is compounded by a downloadable virtual reality experience app, which puts the viewer in the middle of the crash and the lives of those involved.

“It really brings home the reality of how dangerous going just a few kilometres over the speed limit is and how it can impact other innocent road users."

The campaign will run until 21 October 2018 and include television and radio advertising, online/digital advertising, outdoor billboards and social media posts.

Job scams are often prom through spam email or advertisements in well-known classifieds and on job seeker websites – even government job seeker websites.

How the Scam works

Job and employment scams involve offers to work from home or set up and invest in a ‘business opportunity’.

Scammers promise a job, high salary or large investment return following initial upfront payments. These payments maybe for a ‘business plan’, training course, software, uniforms, security clearance, taxes or fees. If you pay the fee you may not receive anything or not what you expected were promised.

A big dander with these job scams is that you can be asked for a lot of personal details that you should not provide including your tax file number and copies of your passport or drivers licence. This information could be used later for identity theft.

Protect yourself

• Beware of offers or schemes claiming to guarantee income or requiring payment upfront • Never agree to transfer money f or someone else – this is money laundering and it is illegal •

Do not provide your tax file number, divers licence or passport when applying for a job. You may need to provide this information but only after you have stared work.

State Government commits $1 million to strawberry farmers

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk last week announced $1 million in funding to boost the strawberry industry as farmers struggle following recent incidents of contamination.

“This past week, Queensland has been the victim of an ugly, calculated and despicable crime,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“The sabotage of our strawberry industry is not just an attack on hardworking growers and workers, but it reaches into almost every home and school lunch box.”

This $1 million fund will:

• boost consumer confidence through promoting the quality of Queensland strawberries;

• investigate with the industry how to further improve traceability and integrity in the supply chain; and • help growers for the remainder of this season and as the summer strawberry season in the Granite Belt ramps up.

The value of Queensland strawberries for 2017–18 is forecast to be $160 million.

There are approximately 150 strawberry growers in Queensland, with most production around Dayboro, Beerwah, Wamuran, Elimbah, Caboolture, Stanthorpe and Bundaberg.

“I call on anyone with information on the culprits to come forward - think what damage could have been done if a toddler had been handed a piece of contaminated fruit.

“The community needs to come together and help police catch those responsible to restore our industry to the place of pride it deserves.”

The Premier’s announcement follows Agricultural Industry Development Minister Mark Furner’s meeting with growers in Beerwah last night.

“Our government is listening to the strawberry farmers and we are acting,” Mr Furner said.

“I have written to my Federal, state and territory counterparts about this matter as it is central to protecting our reputation for safe, healthy and highquality fruit.”

Toll roads inquiry hands down findings

The Palaszczuk Government has supported a Parliamentary committee’s calls for toll operators to improve their customer service performance.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the Parliamentary Inquiry into toll roads had attracted almost 200 submissions, with many of those focused on customer service issues and fees and charges.

“The Palaszczuk Government set up the Parliamentary Inquiry into tolling in Queensland to ensure motorists are receiving quality services from toll operators,” Mr Bailey said.

“The committee received a number of submissions that raised issues with a perceived lack of communication from toll operators and their customers, particularly around fees and charges, and the time people were given to pay.

“Since April 2016, the Palaszczuk Government has worked with Transurban Queensland to improve how it handles tolling enforcement and compliance, and I note the committee did acknowledge the customer service improvements Transurban has introduced since that time.”

The committee recommended the Minister consider establishing of a Queensland-based Tolling Customer Ombudsman that would be more accessible to local motorists.

It also recommended the Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Brisbane City Council continue to monitor Transurban’s fees and charges to ensure they remained reasonable.

Minister Bailey said the committee’s recommendations identified practical ways to make customer service more efficient.

“One of the suggestions was to enable sharing of customer contact data between the Transport Department and toll road operators, so that customers could be contacted sooner about any fees or charges they incurred,” Mr Bailey said.

“Any agreements of that nature would need to comply with privacy legislation, but it’s certainly something that could prevent situations where people accrue a series of toll charges but don’t find out until weeks or months later.

“We think future improvements in technology and customer identification will provide opportunities for Transurban to reduce its administrative fees and charges, and we will continue to work with them on that front.”

The committee also highlighted Transurban’s statement that it was not in a position to discount toll prices, noting in its report that Transurban Queensland had paid $9 billion for the tolling rights.

Mr Bailey said any move by the State Government to subsidise toll prices would be at the expense of other road projects across Queensland.

“The simple fact is that if we spend millions of dollars to make toll roads cheaper in south-east Queensland, it means less money for roads and transport in other parts of the state,” he said.

“Toll roads are a mechanism for governments to work with the private sector to bring forward infrastructure for motorists to ease congestion and give drivers more options.

“The tolls are necessary to pay for that fast-tracked infrastructure and, for drivers who don’t want to pay those tolls, there is still a free alternative.”

The Palaszczuk Government will now consider the Parliamentary Committee’s report in detail and provide a response to its recommendations.

The cuts to our local schools and Caboolture Hospital are still being swept through and the Liberals are still fighting with each other.

Meanwhile, I’m getting on with the job that you elected me to do. I’m continuing on, working with people in our community to improve our healthcare and education system, local services and jobs.

Your Electorate Office has hit the ground running, working on lots of important things like the Stronger Communities Programme. With help from a team of local community leaders, we’re working to identify funding for projects that will make our great area an even better place to live.

We’ve also planned some upcoming mobile offices – you can find the details below. My team and I regularly get out and do community outreach, knocking on doors and helping people with issues. If you see us out-and-about, please stop by and say hi!

STANDING WITH OUR VETERANS – LABOR’S COMMITMENT TO SIGN A MILITARY COVENANT Over time, Governments have provided a system of Veterans Affairs and support, which I think we can agree, has let our veteran community down at times. Whenever I hear of a veteran being let down by the system, it frustrates me. It frustrates me because I know about the sacrifices our veterans have made, and the physical and psychological trauma they’ve undergone to keep our country safe. It should be government’s responsibility to stand behind and look after our defence force personnel.

Our veteran community desperately needs a solution, which is why I’ve made it a priority to work with a Shorten-Labor Government to sign a military covenant. This is a formal pact entered into by the Prime Minister and the Chief of Defence which promises to look after personnel who are currently serving, and those who have left.

Part of Labor’s plan is to put in place a reporting and accountability mechanism which will require governments to report annually to parliament on how they are meeting their responsibilities under the covenant.

I’ll be working hard to make sure Labor is elected, so that we can put this important agreement in place and make sure that our defence personnel are getting the support they need.

Today, we are bombarded by choice when it comes to Pay TV. Gone are the days where the 5 staple channels: ABC, SBS, 7,9 and 10 dominated our screens.

As these services continue to flood the market, we must be informed about their various strengths and weaknesses so that we as consumers are not paying for something that we don’t use. So, have you ever wondered which is better, Netflix or Foxtel? Well wonder no more.

Foxtel, the Pay TV option everybody has heard about, it has been about for around 23 years and has gained a reputation of its own. Foxtel is widely known for the sports and kids’ packages. Foxtel is about $15 a month for a standard pack. Foxtel has many different packages for different people, like sport, movies and even Disney.

This gives you the opportunity to tailor the package that you want. The only problem with this is that to get multiple or all packages, you are looking at spending upwards of $80. When it comes to buying packages, the sports packages seem like you’re getting a lot but this package alone it is $29 a month for a standard sports pack, but sadly the pack doesn’t include boxing or fighting sports. One also needs to purchase and base package, at $10 an month. Great options = high prices.

Netflix has become a part of everyone’s lives, the streaming service has blown up over the past three years with it becoming one of the most popular pay tv sites around the world. Netflix is one of the most widely affordable Pay TV sites in the 21st century. Netflix is $10 per month for a standard package which gives you a wide variety of tv shows and movies. It also has many original television shows and movies.

Netflix also has got features such as you being able to download movies and tv shows for when you want to binge on the go.

So, the question needs to be answered – which one is better value? Well if you are looking for value for money look no further than Netflix and it is only going to get better. No contracts and new additions every month. On the flip side, if sport is your thing, then Foxtel is your only option but with free to air television increasing its sporting coverage, maybe there is no need.

Roundabouts . . .

Why don’t most driver’s know the rules??

Or do they, but just choose to ignore them!!

Roundabouts are installed to alleviate congestion and make traffic run smoothly, if the road rules are obeyed and followed.

That’s how easy it is, obey the laws, follow the signage, either road signs or arrows painted on the road surface, and the whole flow of traffic would run without drivers’ becoming upset (road rage).

Roundabout very confusing!

Turning right or U-turns:

1. Position your vehicle in the right lane, unless arrows on the road or signs indicate otherwise.

2. Use your right indicator as you approach and enter the roundabout.

3. Give way to all vehicles already on the roundabout.

4. Before exiting, use your left indicator and follow the exit lane marking and

5. Stop indicating once you have exited the roundabout. Never turn right from the left lane unless arrows on the road indicate that you can.

Bribie Island has a number of roundabouts, probably too many, but they are there and we have to put up with them and every day drivers disobey the rules, either ignorantly or they just don’t care about other motorists and just do as they please.

The main roundabout of contention is the “big one” at the intersection of Benabrow Avenue and Goodwin Drive (the BP roundabout), we all know the one. It is very well sign posted and there should be no problems in executing travel through the roundabout, but alas, I have observed numerous drivers ignoring the signs and making an illegal left turn from Goodwin Drive into Benabrow Avenue from the right-hand turn lane and some drivers do it continuously and as well as that, they do not indicate their intentions. It happens on all four approaches to the roundabout as well.

The following is an extract from Queensland Transport on how to drive at roundabouts:

Who gives way at a roundabout:

When approaching a roundabout you must give way to all vehicles already on the roundabout.

Turning left:

1. Position your vehicle in the left lane, unless arrows on the roadside indicate otherwise.

2. Use left indicator as you approach and enter the roundabout.

3. Give way to all vehicles already on the roundabout.

4. Remain in the left lane as you complete your turn. 5.

Continue to use your left indicator as you exit the roundabout and 6. Stop indicating once you have exited the roundabout.

Going straight ahead:

1. Position your vehicle in either lane unless the arrows on the road or signs indicate otherwise.

2. There is no need to use indicator until you are ready to exit the roundabout.

3. Give way to all vehicles already on the roundabout.

4. Before exiting, use left indicator and follow the exit lane marking and 5. Stop indicating once you have exited the roundabout.

These are very simple rules and are self explanatory, YET drivers still ignore them, it’s amazing. Like it says in the rules, there is no need to indicate right if you are going through the roundabout, it only confuses the drivers facing you who think you are turning right, then suddenly you put your left indicator on, and off you go, leaving them a little bit peeved off, because they were waiting to give way to you.

right turn only arrows painted on them, that means legally a cyclist has to turn right only, according to the rules. It’s a bit hard on the motorist if a cycle suddenly cuts across him from the left if he is travelling straight ahead.

On saying this though, since the roundabout was upgraded I have never seen a cyclist use the lanes.

Since I have been considering a story about the roundabout I have spoken to a lot of people and some of the local bus drivers’ regarding their opinions. They usually say three words, “it’s a nightmare.” Some bus drivers’ have even had vehicles try and overtake them on the left hand side, whilst they are turning right from Benabrow into Goodwin and it’s only luck that they have been noticed by the bus drivers who have to brake to, as they say, “let the idiots past.”

The only sure remedy is to have a police unit patrol the area for a couple of hours a day for a week and fine everyone that commits an offence. No one likes being hit in the back pocket, so it wouldn’t take long before it stopped. There are possibly three offences: 1.

Disobeying a traffic sign or marking; 2. Failing to indicate intentions of turning (because most people who do the left turn from Goodwin into Benabrow do it intentionally and don’t want other drivers to know they are about break the law) and 3. Careless driving, because what else could you call it.

MICK’S PATCH Fruits of Labour Reap what you Sow! After visiting many a garden around Bribie Island and districts over the last few years, I have had the opportunity to observe some of the more successful, garden designs and urban fruit and vegetable production systems growing well for our coastal conditions. I have been ramping on about soils and composts for years and the reason for my hollering is that the proof is in the pudding.

Some fruit trees available for purchase might have different soil requirements and many people may be enticed to buy unsuitable stock as they are swayed to grow their favourite fruits in our naturally depleted sandy soils here on the coast. This is why most of our fruit trees are grafted onto hardy root stocks. Ask any plant

collector or passionate gardener- and they might tell you that if you put in the effort and create an environment for your fruit and veggies and landscape specimens which is more endemic to their origins and needs, then there is usually less problems with pest and disease pressure accordingly. We need to make our soils as fertile as possible for the overall health and vitality for the whole landscape and subsequently, if we want that beautiful prolific fruiting blueberry or that dwarf tropical mulberry, or that irresistible tasting avocado, here on the coast- then be prepared to accommodate their necessary individual basic growing requirements and specialist fertilising needs too.

The great debate of composted manuresverses manufactured chemical fertilisers- can once again be appreciated, but a compromise is needed, as to reach a balance to assure the optimum growth requirements for the individual tree varieties is satisfied. Compost, vermicompost and fungal dominant soils and additives, are excellent in revitalising the soil, but slow release fertilisers can assist to supply the micro nutrients in the correct ratio for the plants needs for successful fruit production, either added to the soil or applied to foliage.

So, now your soils are thriving with life, time to plant some fruit and veggies-

Spring into action and plant some of these herbs now: Basil, chives, coriander, dill, mint, oregano, parsley, sage and thyme. (Also, flowers to attract bees) Fruits and Vegetables to consider planting now: Sow- beans, beetroot, capsicum, Chinese cabbage, cucumber, egg plant, onions, potato, pumpkin, silver beet, squash, sweet corn, sweet potato, tomato and watermelon- to mention a few, and don’t forget our tropical passion fruit varieties such as ‘Panama Red’ or ‘Panama Gold’ or if you have the room- try growing pawpaw.

Landscape Plant of the Month Mandevilla sanderi or Brazilian Jasmine

M. Sanderi- ‘My Fair Lady’

Mandevilla or Dipladenia- they are also referred too, are generally fast-growing vines and shrubs (sub- shrubs) originating from South America. The modern cultivars marketed under Dipladenia and are bred for their profuse flowering, easy care and are excellent for long term pot culture and great for balconies and court yards. Most of the plants we see for sale are hybrids of Mandevilla and are more reliable, as long as they don’t get over watered- as they need well drained soil. Mandevilla have a tuberous root system which to store their water and too much irrigation can cause them to rot. Mandevilla love their warmth and sunny conditions and generally do not tolerate frost, but there is a variety that does- called Mandevilla Laxa. Mandevilla have trumpet shaped flowers that have a yellow throat and they flower from spring to autumn. In the image above: M. Sanderi- ‘My Fair Lady’ is a beautiful white flowering cultivar and is still being marketed under the Dipladenia tag at the nursery. There are red flowering cultivars: M. Sanderi. ‘Red Riding Hood’. There is also a new Australian- bred range of colourful cultivars being marketed as: ‘Aloha Mandevilla’Patio Range, which come in tropical pink, orange, white and red coloured flowers. The range of cultivars are as diverse as their habit, from twinning vines to compact shrubs.

Lawn SolutionsWith a Spring in Your Step

Some rainfall at last, finally the lawns and gardens get a reprieve from last month’s dry spell, just in time for the new spring flush indeed. The sudden cold blast we received during the first week of September, ensured that mother nature had not entirely let go of winter just yet. Spring is here at last!

I mentioned last article the importance of using a mulching mower to redirect the cut clippings back onto the soil which adds some vital organic matter needed to improve our sandy soils here on the coast. Now spring has arrived, it’s time to have a good look at your favourite

sward of green. Upon inspection, is it spongey to walk on? Do you have flourishing weeds interspersed among your sward? Perhaps your lawn has a thick- thatch build up already, in which- case, a thorough dethatching might be beneficial for your lawn- especially, if it’s a high thatch buffalo or couch variety. (Sometimes the higher you cut the lawn, the more thatch builds up underneath accordingly). Lawns that are cut more frequently, say once a week- will have less thatch.

The thatch layer consists of dead grass, stems and roots that develop over time on the soil surface, where the grass shoots emerge. Excessively thatched lawns can be a breeding ground for pests and diseases and this where fungal problems usually start, from the excessive moisture sitting on top of the decaying organic matter, especially in cold, damp and overly humid weather conditions.

This thatch layer can actually impede water infiltrating into the soil surface making it hard to wet your soil and hydrate your grass.

You might notice if you cut your lawn shorter than usual, you might see patches of brown, dead grass areas, suddenly appearing during the cut, this is part of the thatch layer being exposed. And this thatch, is what can be hand raked or scarified with a machine when the weather warms up and the turf is growing strongly again. Usually around late October is the best time to initiate a low cut to the lawn to assist in removing this thatch layer or utilise dethatching methods, but an irrigation programme will need to be programmed to ensure a speedy recovery and prevent further stress to the grass. In early spring, I like to cut the lawn at the usual height, control any weeds, then apply some organic based lawn fertiliser, then irrigate afterwards. In about 4 weeks your sward will have enough nutrients to assist in the recovery from dethatching before the onslaught of our hot Queensland summer weather.

[This is an opinion of Cranky Lizard – no other person or persons –it is a magnificently courageous expose of the political correctness that is sweeping, untrammelled, across our drought-stricken nation. ]

The briefings were held behind coded, thick doors; doors which could resist all eavesdroppings, and it must be noted that were any number of eaves who were willing to drop on these briefings. It is a testament to the raw, unbridled courage of the shims and the sims, who were engaged in this titanic struggle, that they grimly attended the briefings and acted upon the shocking information they received.

These were Shims and Sims who were prepared to act on the drop of a hat; charge through crowded shopping centres, disregarding the splattering of chocolate frizzies, shrugging off the detritus of thick shakes and slashing their way through clouds of fatty steam from chip fryers. These were front-line shims and sims, not researchers, not administrators, Oh. No, these were the real deal.

They were carefully selected – one of the fundamental criteria being their capacity to remain outraged continuously coupled with an almost unnatural level of internal zealotry; thus enabling them to function despite ridicule from the media, which, admittedly was rapidly declining, and pressure from families and others who asked if they had gone insane?

They were referred to as “ The Thought Police “, and they roamed a global beat.

These Shims and Sims were not insane – they were seized with a passion- a passion which drove them with, if you like, crazy fury, to rid our society of common sense and ordinary behavioural language.

The recent briefing, the one conducted behind the eavesdropping proofed doors had highlighted a shocking and unacceptable threat – there had been reported, and observed, examples of heteronormativity.

This unusual activity was best described as a young man meets a young girl, they fall in love and live happily together as a family unit.

Can you imagine how bloody wrong this kind of stuff is? I mean we are referring to about 96.4% [ roughly speaking ] of our society. What about the other 3.6 %? What about their rights? The purple wearers, the ‘ mee- toos ‘, the rainbow people, the ABGFDRECVJKH F community, the coffee mob, the beautiful, shapeless people…don't these people have a right to live without being threatened by heteronormativity?

Of course, they do, of course, they do; and that is why the Thought Police were flat out, like lizards on rocks, stamping out normality.

Another huge threat to our communities was the appearance of golliwogs at the Royal Adelaide Show and in a chemist shop in Toowoomba! A woman called Florence Kate Upton had first mentioned these shocking monsters in a book in the early 19 th century, by the late 20 th century and the early 21 st century it was thought these pernicious little wretches were gone, gone from our lives, gone from our thoughts, but no! They were baaaack! Evil such as

this cannot quickly be stamped out from our communities, and it is only after desperate and unrelenting struggles can the Thought Police prevail. The golliwogs were removed from shopping shelves, they were removed from show stands, they were ripped from the arms of children, who were, bless them, innocently holding these vile little icons.

Shop owners and managers, along with Show Organizers, issued blanket, public and grovelling apologies – hoping that these actions would save our threatened society.

We, all of us, can only hope and pray.

There has been a life-changing revelation on a University Campus, which should, for safety’s sake, remain anonymous, that a small train – Thomas The Tank Engine- has been identified as an example of superior male behaviour.

The huffing and puffing and ultimate success are perceived as pejorative to females.

Work has now commenced on how to develop the best strategy to deal with this threat; stressed out Thought Police have been recalled from leave, and raiding parties are being prepared to seek out and stamp out Thomas The Tank Engines wherever they may be!

One horror scenario is that somewhere there may be a shed containing both golliwogs and Thomas The Tank Engines – Oh the obscenity of it all?

Rattling through the corridors of our Parliaments and riffling up and down the spines of some of our politicians is the shonky mental express which carries this nonsense into and onto our National forums.

Cranky Lizard is proud to stand in the way of this rubbish; this mental nonsense which is being inflicted upon us by humans who have only a brief touch of real life and who have nothing

Sliding surreptitiously along with the horrors mentioned above is one of the greatest threats to humanity, the Thought Police have identified. It is The English Language and words containing – men, man, male etc…- there are manholes, there are manuscripts, there are humans, there are manufacturers, people are called men and women, teeth are called mandibles, there are books for children called “ The Mister Men “ series, there are people manipulating, people mend things…the list is endless, as is the threat.

So Cranky Lizard is taking a stand and publicly says, in a huge and loud voice – “ GOLLIWOGS “ and “ Thomas The Tank Engine “

Cranky Lizard also means that if you want a golliwog, get one !! If you want to read the Mister Men Series books to your children, then do so !!

Cranky Lizard reminds you all of a certain regime in Europe which decided to ban certain books; they burnt thousands upon thousands of books.

And their actions were eventually exposed as sanctioned thuggery.

This was a regime which wore as a badge

of commitment on their hats and arms – the swastika. That regime ended after the world lost millions of humans wiping them out, and one of its major proponents, Mussolini, was hung, upside down, on the concourse of a service station by the very people who had voted for him !!

Local community helps our strawberry farmers last weekend and also got a bargain!

If any of you went to Oasis Berries between Caboolture and Bribie island, opposite the Shell Servo this weekend, then you would have seen the incredible community support for our local berry growers.

For just $10 for a huge tray of Strawberries, and you also had the wonderful experience of picking them yourself and filling your tray with your own personally selected strawberry’s.

While I sit here writing this with the most delicious strawberry smoothie, it almost brings tears to my eyes as I realize the damage that this has had on our local strawberry farmers. My Question is, who could possible do this and why? I just hope our authorities and our State Government find whoever is behind this and fast.

It seems that the media have also contributed to the destruction, Oasis Berries were one of the 6 berry farms named in this scandal by the media, yet there was not one needle found in any of Oasis Berry’s at all. It is a shame the media outlets did not do their research.

Supermarkets have now stopped buying from them!

George Him, the owner of Oasis Berry’s said “it is absolutely devastating what has happened and if we didn’t open the farm to the community to come and pick their own, we would be throwing out over a 100 Tonne.” He also said “I’m overwhelmed at how many people have come out to buy a tray, approximately 6000 on Saturday and the same for Sunday” Oasis Berries is at 434 Bribie Island Road, Opposite the Shell Servo and if you are looking for the sweetest, delicious strawberry’s then head on out there and get a tray. It is a wonderful experience to go with the kids, and the children no doubt have a great time in our very own local strawberry fields.

Fisheries Minister Mark Furner said the two fishers were caught on Teewah Beach with a total of 3591 pipis in June 2017.

“The possession limit for pipis in Queensland is 50 per person so the two fishers had in their possession 3491 more pipis than is legally permissible,” Mr Furner said.

“Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers found the pipis, with an estimated value of $900, in two black drums during an inspection of the fisher’s vehicle and retuned all pipis to the water.

“The large number of pipis found suggests they were taken for sale on the blackmarket.”

Mr Furner said the black market supply of fisheries resources such as pipis threatens the sustainability of the Queensland’s fisheries resources and consumers should only buy seafood from licensed suppliers.

“To address the black marketing of seafood, it is proposed to amend the Fisheries Act 1994 to strengthen the enforcement powers of Fisheries inspectors and the penalties for serious offences,” he said.

“There was overwhelming support for these changes through consultation, with more than 90 per cent of people supporting strong compliance powers and heavier penalties to address blackmarketing.”

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) Noosa District Officer Matthew Albiez said taking such a large number of pipis was a very serious offence “Despite signs being present at the site, the fishers either ignored them or failed to make themselves aware of the limits that apply to recreational fishers,” Mr Albiez said.

“Possession limits exist to conserve and enhance the community’s fisheries resources and fish habitats to promote ecologically sustainable development.

“The very large number of pipis possessed by the fishers shows a lack of consideration for the potential consequences to fisheries stock in the future.”

Mr Albiez said exceeding possession limits was a prevalent offence in the Noosa district.

“From 1 July 2017 to 1 July 2018, 32 Fisheries Infringement Notices were issued and another 24 people were cautioned by QBFP in relation to these types of offences,” Mr Albiez said.

“These offences are difficult to detect but our valuable fisheries resources require protection if future generations are to enjoy them.

“Fishers have a responsibility to ensure they understand and are up-to-date with Queensland’s fishing rules.”

Fishers to land the right catch with new boating and fishing guides

Recreational fishers can have the latest information at their fingertips to help them land the right catch with the release today at the Brisbane Boat Show of two new guides.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the new Queensland Recreational Boating and Fishing Guide 2018-19 edition featured up to date information on Queensland’s boating and fishing rules and regulations for the tens of thousands of anglers who enjoy recreational boating and fishing.

“The guide provides detailed information on boating rules, fish size and possession limits, what fishing apparatus can be used and closed seasons and marine park rules so that fishers can easily comply with the rules and keep our waterways as safe as possible for all users,” Mr Furner said.

“All fishers should get a copy of the Queensland Recreational Boating and Fishing Guide 2018-19 edition to ensure they are across the current rules.”

Mr Furner said the new Queensland Tidal and Freshwater Fishing Pocket Guide was the perfect companion to the Queensland Recreational Boating and Fishing Guide 2018-19 edition.

“This cleverly designed two-in-one pocket guide has handy information for freshwater and tidal fishers printed backto-back in the one convenient booklet,” Mr Furner said.

“The pocket guide gives useful information on species size and possession limits, colour images for most species, fish release tips, measuring your catch and rules and requirements for fishing gear, and will be as valuable as the right bait and tackle when planning your next day on the water.”

Mr Furner said the covers of both the Queensland Tidal and Freshwater Fishing Pocket Guide and the Queensland Recreational Boating and Fishing Guide 2018-19 edition featured the winning entries from a competition run by Fisheries Queensland in May 2018.

“Local anglers submitted photos of themselves with their catches and judges had a difficult time choosing the winning entries,” Mr Furner said.

“The cover of the freshwater guide shows Adrian Tuck releasing a jungle perch he caught in a remote rainforest creek in Far North Queensland while the tidal water cover shows Anthony Dickson with a snapper he caught off the Redcliffe Peninsula.

“The cover of the Queensland Recreational Boating and Fishing Guide 2018-19 edition shows Riley Woods with a barramundi he caught at Proserpine’s Peter Faust Dam, one of Queensland’s 63 stocked impoundments.”

Copies of the guides will be available at bait and tackle stores, local Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol and Maritime Safety Queensland offices or can be ordered through the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Customer Service Centre on 13 25 23.

A digital copy of the guide will also be available to download from the Fisheries Queensland website www.fisheries.qld. gov.au.

Queensland’s recreational fishing rules and regulations are also available on the free ‘Qld Fishing’ smartphone app from Apple and Google app stores and online at www.fisheries.qld.gov.au.

An upgraded recreational fishing app will be available before the end of the year and will allow fishers to identify fish using photo recognition, use an interactive mapping function to identify different zones, report illegal fishing activity and view permits.

Bribie Island Bowls club raised money for Jeans for Genes Day

Bribie Island Bowls club last month had a Jeans for Genes day, the members and guests were invited to wear Jeans on the day including for Friday Night Raffles. The men’s Club Participated and came dressed in jeans to play bowls, along with the staff were encouraged to wear jeans.

The Club raised $1,348.40 which was donated to Jeans or Genes Day and the Children’s Medical Research Institute, by charging $5 per person or there was a $10 fine if no jeans were worn (not compulsorily).

The Team Bowlers at Bribie Island Bowls Club would like to thank Ellen Booth, the management, board and staff of the Bribie Island Bowls Club along with their Members and guest for supporting such a great cause.

Our patience is wearing thin, get cracking on Bribie Island Rd!

It has been months since the Federal Govt announced $20 million funding to fast track planning projects for vital upgrades to our electorate’s busiest and most dangerous road - and still no action being taken by the State Labor Government to get this funding into play. There’s no excuse for this blatant disregard for Pumicestone. We all know what our roads are like on a summer’s weekend here on Bribie - and we all know the dangers due to the congestion over and above what already exists on any given day at intersections like Old Toorbul Point Road and Spinnaker Drive. The funding is there – it’s ready to go, the Labor Government knows this but they’ve chosen to play politics instead of doing the right thing by Pumicestone. I was flabbergasted to recently receive a reply letter from the Main Roads Minister about this funding where he made the following hand written note:

Mark Bailey MP Minister for Transport and Main Roads GPO Box 2644 BRISBANE QLD 4001 Via email: transportandmainroads@ministerial.qld.gov.au Dear Minister I refer to your letter dated 3 September in reply to my letter regarding the $20 million Federal funding for fast tracking Bribie Island Road safety upgrade projects. I specifically note your handwritten comments on that letter asking me to lobby the Commonwealth Government to “unlock” these funds.

I wish to inform that I have in fact had numerous conversations with the Federal Government regarding this funding that I fought hard for and which you would be pleased to know has never been locked since it was announced on 6 July this year. Whilst I have done my part, I encourage you to do the same as you will quickly discover the funding is indeed available. The only roadblock is the Palaszczuk Government’s inaction. A call by you to the Federal Minister for Transport will confirm exactly this.

The importance of getting this funding on the ground to improve the safety of residents in the Pumicestone Electorate can not be over stated. It is important to the parents who transport their children to and from St. Michael’s school every day and are forced to navigate the highly dangerous intersection at Old Toorbul Point Road.

It is important to the residents living within the Spinnaker Drive precinct who become grid locked on weekends and public holidays when trying to exit onto Bribie Island Road. The same goes for those who reside in Kal Ma Kuta Drive, along with the many day users towing boats and caravans from that precinct.

It is important to all residents who commute Bribie Island Road and have waited patiently for the State Government to start improving the conditions of dual carriageways and intersections so that their travel along this vital road is safe and not congested.

And finally, it is of the utmost importance to emergency services personnel who navigate, under intense circumstances, the poor conditions of this road when attending to potentially lifesaving emergencies.

You can read my full reply to Minister Bailey in the letter opposite. Further, the graphic to the right shows what this $20 million could achieve for our electorate. There really is no excuse for the State Government to delay getting this funding into play and on the ground now.

Minister, I ask that you not play politics with this funding granted by the Federal Government to benefit the Pumicestone Electorate. On behalf of all residents in my electorate, I request that you do your job and get to work on putting this funding to good use – and the sooner the better.

It’s been such a busy month with bi-weekly Legislative Assembly sittings and Parliamentary Committee Inquiry travel throughout Queensland but there’s nothing better than being back in my electorate and catching up with locals whilst supporting some great causes. Fundraising galore and some magnificent auctioneering skills by Barry France at the annual Bribie Island Local Chaplaincy Committee fundraiser and some catch ups with our local firies during the Senior’s Expo and our fine Police who, like me, are part of the Dementia Friends network supporting our community.

Fixing the highly dangerous Old Toorbul Point Road intersection contingent on planning being finalised for Hickey to Saint Road project.

In other words not happening until 2019/20
