Dear Editor Fire crisis brings out Queensland spirit Over the past two weeks we’ve seen the best and worst of what Queensland has to offer, due to severe bushfires conditions.

While the threat is far from over, the worst of it is behind us and that’s thanks largely to the men, women and thousands of volunteers across Queensland who worked tirelessly to keep their communities safe.

Whether you were fighting fires, setting up evacuation centres, behind the BBQ or simply being a friend-in-need – I say, thank you.

We must also acknowledge our interstate fire crews who assisted us in the firefighting efforts.

Their determination and passion to help their Queensland counterparts was truly inspiring.

Properties were saved and sadly some were lost, but it’s the spirit and friendship among so many local communities that will help in the healing process.

My heartfelt condolences to those families who lost so much.

I have no doubt, with the support of your friends, families and communities, you will get back on your feet sooner rather than later. You are in our thoughts.

I encourage your all this holiday season to embrace your local community and make a contribution no matter how big or small – because that’s the Queensland way.

There is nothing better than sitting down to a large piece of caramel topped cheese cake with a mug of latte overlooking the Bribie Island Passage talking about boats. My Close Encounters Guest, Michael Jessop is an entrepreneur and owner of Ocean Craft Boats based on the Sunshine Coast.

I had the pleasure of joining Michael at one of his favourite hang-outs, the Caloundra Motor Boat Club. As Michael says, “I have been around boats for my entire life – it’s in my blood - my dad was a Submariner in the Royal Navy – a proud Englishman. Michael Jessop is a larger than life character – in fact you need to meet this man to get your head around the definition of ‘larger than life.’ I would define this ‘larger than life’ character as an extremely passionate innovative man with a gift for communication supported by an exceptionally high IQ who loves caramel cheese cake and cream – not to mention his blended English/Australian Accent.

After attending boarding school from the age of 8 in England and graduating from Portsmouth University in Southern England with a Degree in Business with Computers, Michael was picked up by IBM and then went on to study a Post Graduate in microprocessor design.

BANG AWARDED BEACHMERE FACILITY

From left Christine Dillon, Karen Harris, Dave Newell, Mary Brown and Di Newell – the BANG 2019 Committee Moreton Bay Regional Council recently voted to award Beachmere Area Network Group Inc (BANG) the Management Agreement for the community facility previously known as Beachmere Bowls Club or the Beachmere RSL Sub Branch.

Expressions of Interest were called and from those submitting an Expression of Interest in the facility, BANG was awarded the right to negotiate an Agreement based on having the best management option for the facility.

Moreton Bay Regional Council minutes state “With consideration to BANG’s strong connection to the local community, programming intent for the facility and demonstrated capacity to meet the relevant hall management requirements, it is recommended that the Council approve the BANG EOI Submission.”

The Council considered the following factors as favourable to BANG’S application “Established in 2015, BANG has over 80 active members and delivers a variety of community-based services in the Beachmere area, such as: the Beachmere Assist service; community and cultural events; fundraising initiatives; Beachmere University of the Third Age; community information services; and coordination of a local community disaster management team.”

President of BANG, Karen Harris, said the BANG committee were ready to step in to revive and re-invigorate this important community asset. Vacant since April 2018, the facility was a focal point in the community and an extremely important part of the

Beachemere assist grows into new home for First Birthday Beachmere Assist will have its first birthday in a new dedicated space at Beachmere Community Hall from Tuesday, 8 January 2019.

In mid January 2018 Beachmere Assist “opened its doors” to help Beachmere locals connect to a variety of services and advice as well as providing an opportunity to “get out of the house” combating loneliness and isolation.

Every Tuesday, from 9am till 11am Beachmere locals met at the Beach Shak Café for a cuppa and a chat. However, the group has grown since then and the space can no longer contain the number of people attending and the volunteers on hand to assist.

“It is a symbol, and a requirement, of community connectedness, of a social venue which can bring together the young and the old in the one location for a myriad of reasons and uses. It is, essentially, the heart of Beachmere.”

“The Beachmere Community Lawns Bowls Club will continue from this location and we will support them in their continued growth, by encouraging more people to use the facility.”

“BANG will also base it’s many community activities from this one location including Beachmere Assist, the Beachmere Community Disaster Management Team and FAB - Fabulous Art Beachmere as well as our quarterly Forums for elected officials. It is also a great space for some exciting new projects like a Visitor Information Centre.”

“It also offers Beachmere a dedicated venue for celebrations and functions – a very important part of the fabric of a strong community,” Karen said.

“We will consult widely with the local community and try to get the balance right between providing activities and events for Beachmere and bringing new business and projects to support existing businesses and activities.

There are three aspects of Christmas in our Australian lifestyle.

One is the religious imperative which is the foundation of the Christian religion; the birth of Jesus, a couple of thousand years or so ago, in a manger in a small village called Bethlehem, in what is now Israel. Christianity and its passive role in our society is the foundation stone upon which much of Western culture rests. The birth of Jesus, the Son of our Christian God, on the 25 th. of December, is a widely celebrated ceremony throughout the Christian world, in both hemispheres of the Earth.

Magnificent Christian cathedrals echo the sounds of some truly beautiful Christmas Carols – Silent Night – is one of them; the peeling of church bells floats across European snowfields and the Antipodean harshness simultaneously joining Christians together in the expression of their faith.

Much goodwill is generated by the Christmas Spirit and acts of generosity towards less fortunate humans are numerous and spontaneous. Cranky Lizard is a Christian and willingly enters into the spirit of Christmas.

The second aspect of Australian Christmas is the uniting of families for the holiday period. This annual getting together of families is not uniquely Australian, the process applies across the Christian world. Individual family members flung around the globe because of employment, marriage or other reasons make long and involved journeys to meet with their families in one place or another across the countryside. Christmas travel on Australian roads during the Christmas travel period is a wild adventure, fraught with danger as highways, freeways, interstate and local become choked arteries of throbbing traffic. Tempers flare with the heat and the stress of travel; motor vehicles, old and new, are asked to do impossible tasks during the Christmas travel period, and the relevant State authorities increase traffic penalties two-fold, at least during this period, in an attempt to control the mad rush of traffic and the associated motor vehicle crash tragedies. Local newspapers always seem to find more drama and pathos about a fatal road crash at Christmas time than at any other time; who knows why? Road accident deaths are tragic at any time of the year. It is recognised as one the great travel experiences of your life if you attempt to fly, by commercial aircraft to any destination at Christmas time. Airport terminals become hideous nightmares of crushing humans, the odd crackpot trying to take their pet hippopotamus on board as cabin luggage and determined phalanxes

guess that it is not long before Uncle Wally decks Uncle Bob and it is on! This Police Officer found that Christmas Day was not a day of goodwill but a day of drunken emotional brawls. Eh Bien.

The third and final aspect of the Australian Christmas, and also a global phenomenon, is the commercial aspect of the whole thing. From about November, tinsel, Bing Crosby and ‘ White Christmas ‘ plus chubby, plastic statues of Father Christmas appear magically in shopping malls across the nation. Cranky Lizard has had to be restrained from wild, uncontrolled sobbing as “ White Christmas, was played for three thousand times during one shopping expedition in a regional town in Australia. There is also the peculiar delight of the of the shopping centre car parks, where SUV’s as big as a tank, maneuver about looking for a park. A deadly mistake to make is when you see a vehicle, already parked, start up and begin to move out-by moving close to the spot and putting your blinker on, indicating that you intend to drive into the space when it is clear. This immediately results in the leaving driver feeling offended, so they shut off the engine and sit there in their stationary vehicle. The other vehicle, the one intending to park, also won't move because they don’t want to lose their spot…both drivers can stay like that until they are both dead!

The pressure to purchase presents, to upstage one’s friends and families with gee gaws, splendid gifts and food results in colossal stress on families, credit cards are maxed out, no one can sensibly eat again until the end of March and the Boxing Day sales have assumed more importance in Australia then the Boxing Day Test Match.

So what about all this?

Cranky Lizard suggests that, if you can, stay home this Christmas, talk online more than usual, eat some prawns, drink some good quality champagne or sparkling water and listen to Silent Night on Christmas Eve. of grand-mothers and mothers-inlaw transporting homemade cakes and puddings across the globe or the nation – because! An added hysterical dimension to all this is the wearing of the red and white sock hat by all the workers in the airport terminal, for God’s sake. Even the bloody pilots wear them, and it requires a disciplined act of faith to remain calm as the Captain of the multi-engine jet aircraft, stuffed to the gunnels with travellers, toys, pets, children, cakes and puddings wishes you all Merry Christmas from the cockpit, wearing his red and white sock hat. Cranky Lizard does not know, but presumes, that the wearing of the sock hats by Christmas workers is a form of “ getting into the spirit of Christmas

BRIBIE HONOURS WAR SERVICE HISTORY

In 2015 Australia commemorated the Centenary of ANZAC. The Bribie Island Historical Society posed the question…….”Who answered the Call” …….wondering how many people from Bribie and surrounds had answered the call to serve in both World Wars.

With support from the ANZAC Centenary Fund the Society conducted detailed research which identified 18 men who enlisted for World War 1 (1914-18) and 19 for World War 2.

Several descendants and family members of the 37 people being honoured were in attendance, and were delighted to have these stories documented after all these years.

In his opening address Graham Mills reminded us of the words of one RAAF Nursing Sister, Sharon Bown, who served in East Timor, survived a Helicopter crash, and returned with the scars of War

Answered the Call” which contains a photo of her brother John Duke as a young soldier, and beside it her own photo all these years later at the age of 93.

Hazel and her family were very moved by these memories of her brother, and of the other few families that lived on Bribie and surrounds all those years ago.

During World War 2 most of the civilian residents of Bribie were evacuated and the Island was occupied by Army and

To commemorate the Centenary in 2015 the Historical Society unveiled two bronze plaques at the War Memorial on First Avenue.

This year 2018 marks the 100th Anniversary of the end of WW1 and the Historical Society have once again honoured those from Bribie and surrounds who answered the call to duty.

With a Grant from the Queensland ANZAC Centenary Program the Society President Graham Mills and Database Coordinator Donna Holmes have done further research to published a digitised book recording the personal stories of these 37 local men and women who served in two Wold Wars.

It is remarkable that back in 1914 when the resident population of Bribie was less than 50 people, 18 men enlisted.

By 1940 there were a few more residents on Bribie and surrounds, and 16 men and 2 women enlisted for World War 2..

“I strongly encourage all people within the Pumicestone Electorate to become familiar with official bushfire warnings and ensure families, friends and neighbours have a plan for action that may save lives”, Ms Wilson said.

“If I had died over there I would have been remembered for ever,but I survived and my name may never be known” All but three of the 37 people honoured in this new Book returned after the War, so this more recent quote says a great deal about this tribute to those who fought for what we all enjoy today.

One special guest at the launch event was Hazel Bishop (nee Duke) who attended with others of her family.

Navy service men and women operating critical defence Guns and Lookouts, Submarine Detection and a large Training Camp at Sandstone Point for Australian and US Troops.

Some early pioneer families are remembered with Streets named after them that many people know, but may not appreciate their significance.

Likewise with the names of Public Parks that give no explanation as to who these people were, or what their contribution was to early years of Bribie Island.

“Being prepared is each of our responsibilities, we must take notice of what is happening around us, seek information and be ready to make decisions and act.

“Right now we should be preparing our homes by getting rid of leaf litter, flammable material and other accelerants like dry grass and continually monitor this around your home during the season.”

At a moving event recently conducted at the Bribie Seaside Museum, President Graham Mills outlined the scope of the Project and the book was officially launched with appropriate words from Councillor Brooke Savige and State

Allan Duke went off to War. She remembers it well as they were both still young and living on the family farm at “Creeklands” when John enlisted and went to serve with 2/15 Australian Infantry Battalion in the middle east where he was one of the “Rats of Tobruk” fighting the War in North Africa.

John Dukes sister Hazel later married into the Bishop family of Toorbul, whose son Maurice had also served in WW1.

Formal complaints of bullying and sexual harassment decorate the walls of these particular toxic chambers, and good men and women are suspended from work, from duty or their specific daily tasks while lengthy, spiteful investigations meander on and on.

Reputations and careers are trashed without any thought of personal consequences, the evidence is nearly always subjective and not necessarily corroborated.

In the past couple of weeks, we have seen some things in this Nation of ours which are gravely contrary to the idea of who we are.

We have seen our Police Officers fighting for their lives – yes – fighting for their lives in a Melbourne Street.

They were fighting a man who acted in the name of Allah; the purpose of this man was to take as many Australian lives as he could before he was killed; because he prayed that he would be killed, so that he could be released from the sheer misery of his life in our country.

WE’RE A FAMILY BUSINESS, LOOKING AFTER FAMILIES!

Islam is one of the leading religious faiths of humankind. Second only to Christianity – regarding numbers of worshippers.

Islam has been in Australia since the earliest days of our settlement. Afghan camel drivers throughout Northern South Australian and the Northern Territory were Muslims…Islam and Muslims have been with us in this country from the beginning. We have all lived peacefully together; respecting each other; going about our lives in our respective communities.

Religious tolerance is not uniquely Australian, nor should it be, but an understanding of others and respect for their way of life is a characteristic of Australia: we usually live and let live, do we not?

At least that has been Australia that I, and my children, have known and it works for us, and it works for millions of other Australians; with some extraordinary exceptions.

And what are those exceptions? May you well ask?

I give you an example of an extraordinary exception.

A majority of Elected Parliamentarians in the Lower House of the Tasmanian Parliament and in the Northern Territory’s Legislative Assembly, have decided, in an hysterical “ Road to Damascus “ moment; that they have the power to legislate biology out of existence. In their world of mystery and magic, gender is no longer evident at the birth of a human child – the parents can deny the gender of the child by not recording the details on the Birth Certificate – or the child itself can make decisions, about its gender, when it is old enough to do so. The intellectual arrogance of this nonsense is amusing, and I wait to see what the Upper House of the Tasmanian Parliament does with this matter.

This is not live and let live stuff; this is human arrogance born in the mould of the King Canute performance when the poor bugger stood on the beach and commanded the tide stop coming in – it didn’t, and the King left with wet feet.

I shall give you another example of an extraordinary exception.

do not suggest that hard examples of workplace bullying and sexual harassment do not occur, it has always been thus; nor am I suggesting that these matters should go unpunished. I am suggesting that we, collectively, have made it easier for malice and pettiness play a large part in some of these matters – and that allows for wastage of time, of resources and human potential.

Ambitions are destroyed, personal initiative is shelved, and instead of a pleasant, productive environment, we are left with a festering mess where spite, mean spirits and revenge grow in moulds like grubby little fungi.

I am forced to ask myself, what do these complainants hope to gain? The answer escapes me – I am not able to determine what they want, and, I suspect, neither do they! They do it because they can which is precisely the worst reason for doing anything.

This is not live and let live stuff. This is entitlement behaviour at its worst

I hold the view that Australia is a marvellous nation; a place where equality comes naturally. We are not burdened with a lingering class system like many other countries; there are no powerful tribal chiefs or sheiks to whom we owe obedience or tributes.

We are our own men and women. We engage the world with confidence in our eyes: a level gaze which signals honesty of purpose, an openness of spirit and a willing capacity to listen to other people.

In my opinion –this is who we are.

Not the intolerant, noisy, self-centred and selfish mob of entitled and precious beings who seem to dominate the pages of our print media and the screens of our televisions.

They do not seem like Australians to me.

Strateg ic (adjective) as identified by the Oxford dictionary is defined as – Relating to the identification of longterm or overall aims and interests and the means of achieving them.

Putting time and thought into how we go about achieving both business and personal goals is equally important. Yet this is not something very many of us tend to do, at least not consciously. For the most part, we often don’t think of our personal lives in terms of strategic planning. Yet strategy really does play a huge part in each of our lives.

Achieving Outcomes

If you want to achieve an outcome then you need to have a very measured approach. A pathway usually consists of a series of stepping stones that take you forward towards your goals. Without a pathway life tends to just wander along in a leisurely (or perhaps chaotic) fashion. There is no firm direction.

There is no strategy. Without strategic direction, there is less chance of achievement and satisfaction.

Strategic planning is all about aiming for what is right for YOU and for your business. You are unique and your plans will be different to mine – but there is a commonality to all plans.

Elements of a Strategic Plan

The elements that go into building a strategic plan are the same for every business. If you are a small business you may not be able to afford the luxury of an experienced facilitator to help guide

Online shopping, classifieds and auction sites are used by scammers to target byers and sellers, with initial contact often made through reputable and trusted sites or fake websites that look like the real thing. Look for secure payment options and beware of the unusual payment methods such as wire transfer, Bitcoins or preloaded money cards. Credit cards usually offer some protection.

It was a special occasion for the local community. And a much needed support system has been put into place with its opening.

Bribie local and founder of Hairdressers with Hearts (HwH) Sonia Colvin was asked to speak at the event. Also speaking was Police Minister Mark Ryan.

Having established HwH to support and facilitate aid to those suffering domestic and family violence and elder abuse Sonia is a local champion of the cause.

As such she was a perfect choice as speaker for the Hub’s opening.

“The opening of the Women’s Wellbeing Hub for Morton Bay is one more step towards supporting vulnerable women with the right support and the right advice. I know that as a hairdresser on Bribie Island how much this service is needed.” She said during her speech.

In her speech she talked about her journey into establishing HWH. Touching on the power one person can have Sonia said “I have personally helped 96 of my clients get the right help.

Multiple that by Australia’s 55,000+ hairdressers and you have 4,730,000 Australians receiving the right help and the right advice at the right time.

Hairdressers with Hearts aims to harness the intimate and trusted relationship between Australia’s 55,000+ hairdressers and their much loved clients.”

Sonia also praised and thanked local domestic violence workers and organisations like the Centre Against Domestic Abuse Inc. (CADA) for all their help and support in establishing HwH.

Finishing her speech Sonia left the crowd with a final, important message.

“Together we can make a difference!”

She said.

The MBWWH has been funded by the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women. It will provide women with tailored holistic support and assist them in improving their wellbeing.

This is just one form of support those in domestic violence situations can turn to. CADA also offers a number of other services including crisis support, counselling services for adults and children, and court assistance to name a few — more information on these services can be found at www.cada.org. au

A Modern Christmas Miracle

Every year, as Christmas rolls around, people become excited about the typical traditions. Food, decorations and presents become the main focus for most Australians. In fact, Australians as a whole are estimated to spend around eleven billion dollars each Christmas, which the Commonwealth Bank averaged out to be around five hundred and ninetythree dollars per person. Christmas has become about consumerism and the act of buying, rather than giving and appreciating simple acts of kindness. In recent years, many people have started to take different approaches towards the giving of gifts at Christmas.

Popular ideas such as sponsoring a child and donating both time and money towards charities have grown bigger and are a different approach gift giving. Rather than spending exorbitant amounts of money on items, taking the effort to donate helps towards changing people’s lives. This process not only benefits and positively impacts a person’s life but also connects people across the globe and helps to raise awareness about issues within society. Throughout the past few weeks, bush fires have raged across Queensland and temperatures have reached the extremes. Many people have lost their homes and belongings less than a month out from Christmas, due to the horrific bushfires. The devastating effects of the fires are being amplified by the largest holiday of the year. With so many people being left

without a roof above their heads, let alone a Christmas tree, it is extremely important that support is shown by all Australians. As a community, everybody has the capacity to encourage positive change throughout society. Simple acts can make a significant change towards a person’s life. Taking the time and effort to donate anything, whether it be toys, food or money is a small way that this Christmas may help to improve the life of others. This small act may to you seem insignificant but may be a Christmas miracle to the person on the receiving end. So many people become wrapped up in their own bubble and can easily forget that there are various people around the world that do not have the luxury of celebrating the holidays. It is less about the Spirit of Christmas and more about the Spirit of Giving. In the 21st century it is so incredibly easy to give to those in need, a quick click of a mouse is all it takes to show support to people across the world. In this case, these people who need our generosity are not from across the globe but in our backyards. Affected by the bushfires, you only need to look to the Island to offer your support to those impacted or offer your help to those you may see in your everyday lives. After all Christmas is not about spending money rather it is about helping others and sharing the happiness that we all wish to have during the holidays. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND WE WOULD LIKE TO WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY AND HEALTHY 2019!

It’s the start of December and here I am staring at a blank piece of paper on my computer screen trying to work out what I can write that will help someone decide that 2019 will be the year to start exercising in ways that will improve their fitness, their happiness, their independence, their confidence, their sleep patterns, their strength, their waist line, their bone density.

I need to encourage them to discover that exercise will reduce their stress and blood pressure, their risk of dementia, heart disease, liver disease, reduce their cholesterol levels, or just make their clothes more comfortable.

As I sat here trying to decide which of these really important issues is the most important to focus on, I sadly realised that many people have ALL of the above issues right now and are about to start behaving in a way which will make all of the above issues worse.

Okay, so I sound like a Grinch, and yes it was just the other day when I was encouraging you to be social as part of a healthy life, but there is a big difference from a once a year social overload and a throughout the year weekly overload,

especially without any exercise and healthy eating in between.

We are having a break between Christmas and New Years and I’m looking forward to Christmas mince pies, rum balls, Christmas cake and even a couple of cold Ciders on the waterfront in the evening.

Yes I can do all that because for us it’s a Christmas thing, not an every night thing. Just like we spend our weekends with social gatherings, lunches and dinners out, because of the way we eat for the remainder of our week.

Now I’m sure you know that I really do practice what I preach, but even personal trainers have times when life impacts on us in ways beyond our control and so after a crazy busy start to this year, I suddenly discovered, around April, that my tights were tighter and my jeans skinner.

So I took the time to work out what had changed in my life. I then concentrated on getting back on track. I stopped making other things more important than my exercise time, I made sure to eat when I should and not grab random food on the run between classes and clients, and I paid attention to what was sitting on my plate next to my coffee when I socialised and “Grabbed a coffee”.

And by taking stock of what I was doing, my tights untightened and my jeans are too big. Now I can relax through the holidays being

Senior Gentle Exercises With A Ball (or cushion) Before You Start

Use a stable high backed chair. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself.

If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are done using a small light ball or a Cushion Take each exercise slowly and carefully If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference.

Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

BALL TRICEP EXTENSIONS

Use a stable chair for support – but do not lean as chair may tip or slide Sit tall in your chair and raise the ball straight above your head Keeping your arms up, bend your elbows as you lower the ball behind your head. Then slowly raise the ball until it’s back to its original position above your head Only do as many as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

BALL LEG SQUEEZE

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall and keep your feet comfortable apart Place the ball or pillow between your knees Using your knees, squeeze the ball for 6 seconds and then slowly release (but don’t let the ball fall).

Repeat slowly, only do as many squeezes as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

BALL BACK REACH

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall in your chair and hold the ball out in front of you. Slowly stretch your arms forward to move the ball away from you like you are handing the ball to someone. You will feel a stretch across your upper back Return to the starting position. Repeat slowly reaching out only as many times as is comfortable for you doing up to 12. Rest

BALL ARM AND CHEST SQUEEZE

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Clap your hands beside Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall in your chair and hold the ball out in front of you. Hold the ball in front of your chest with your elbows pointed straight out. Squeeze the ball between your hands. Keep squeezing for about 6 seconds and then relax Repeat slowly only do as many squeezes as you feel comfortable doing up to 12. Rest

social without worrying about how my swimsuit fits, or how I will get into my work uniform again once the holidays are over.

What’s really amusing is when a client asked if I had lost some weight and how I did it. Ummmmmm Gosh as weird as it is, I just did what I ask my clients to do. I moved more, ate well, paid attention to the “extras” and got organised and taaa daaaa.

Life is all about swings and roundabouts, I honestly have no idea when exercising and eating well became a thing to be seen as boring, uncomfortable and antisocial. Good food isn’t boring or bland, a healthy balanced nutrition plan is full of a huge variety of foods with spices and herbs included. Just because it’s green doesn’t make it tasteless! Exercising is fun, energising and invigorating not a slog and a chore, and our circuit classes are more social than most parties!

So this Christmas please work on balancing your swings and roundabouts by including exercise in your day. You may be surprised at who will jump at a chance to go for a walk with you after dinner, or a quick swim before breakfast. Eat balanced meals between the social occasions, think about how much you are inhaling at parties. Take a plate filled with beautiful fresh fruit and vege sticks, again you may be surprised at who grabs for those rather than the bowls of lollies and chips.

Dementia Can Be A Stress On Families

General community understanding of dementia is poor but its incidence is on the increase. People with dementia and their loved ones can and do, feel misunderstood, marginalized and isolated. This can mean that people with dementia and their families find it very difficult to live in their own homes or continue to be active participants in the community.

As Service Manager of Bribie Respite & Support Services I meet people every day who are struggling with memory loss.

I see how family relationships become more stressful when one partner has dementia - or another form of health decline - and how those with declining health can feel a burden to their family.

The partner with fewer health issues often also goes into decline through stress and attempting to cope without support.

Sometimes that stress is worse at times like Christmas when families are busy and juggling competing family demands.

At Bribie Respite & Support Services we try to support families and give them the breaks they need with our daily respite services.

We research the activities we run to stretch people with physical or memory decline. They are designed to be challenging but at a level that allows people to participate and feel satisfied with their efforts. The combination of challenge and fun is a boost for morale.

Time for yourself It’s the end of the year, holidays are here and well deserved!! Time for some self- nurturing to balance it up and refresh and revive YOU. You don’t have to go on a fancy expensive overseas trip, (although wouldn’t that be nice?) but use the time to do simple stress relieving activities that will nurture your own health and wellbeing. The Opposite of Freedom - it Makes Everything Impossible

Christmas 1942-3 A war-time story Rosie and her Sister wearing grass skirts gifted by their dad.

My sister and I were very young during WW 2 but we knew Mummy was sad.

Dad had enlisted in the RAAF where he became a Leading Aircraftman.

And then - happiness!

26.12.42 The best day yet as I got three letters from home and more to come.

We lived in Victoria, a long way from Townsville where he was sent by train in December 1942, a few days before Christmas. Every day he anticipated mail from home but none came.

On December 23rd, he wrote in his journal, Still no mail. Very disappointed and feel that I could give it all up and go home.

Eventually dad was sent to Goodenough Island off the northern coast of New Guinea. What happened there is another story, one he was reluctant to talk about when he returned home.

The next two entries break my heart.

24.12.42 Christmas Eve What would I not give to be with my family today and especially tonight.

My thoughts are all with them and can picture the scene at home. My Darling putting the children to bed and making sure they are asleep before placing their presents on beds. Here it is just another day’s hard work.

25.12. 42 Thinking of home now, and very disheartened as no mail came and still no word from home. Nearly made a fool of myself when mail was given out when we were at dinner. Seemed to be sure of some mail for Christmas.

On Christmas Day, 1943, Dad wrote, Xmas Day and one I won’t forget. This morning at 7 a Beaufort crashed on the strip killing the crew of 4. Apparently one bomb failed to drop over target, and dropped as plane landed, setting it on fire and burning two of crew to death.

The other two were thrown through front of plane on to the strip and were killed instantly. I had to help with the bodies. They were a terrible sight.

I can’t imagine Dad’s horror. However, there is some joy in his journal. In between the horror of Japanese air-raids, he explored the island by canoe and befriended a local chief called Tamasie.

Dad wrote, the kiddies are the most interesting of all. I could be with them for hours. Most of them are very smart and some very good-looking.

After seeing all the villages and having assured the chief that I would return soon, take him some sugar, he promised to have some pretty mats and baskets ready for me.

To cement our friendship, he picked two flowers. One for himself and one for me. These we were to wear in our hair but I’m afraid mine wasn’t meant for flowery adornment and mine soon fell out (Much to my relief).

In the midst of war there was longing for home, comradeship and beauty.

At Christmas most of us are lucky enough to have family to share it with.

Sometimes we grumble about the work involved, the travel from one family home to another, the expense, even the requirement to spend time with certain relatives we don’t like.

When I think about those who, like my father, were isolated because of war, I thank my lucky stars for what I have. I am also prompted to think about those who, in today’s world, are fighting other wars, or who are homeless, or who are on the move searching desperately for a safe place to live and bring up their families. I hope someone gives them love.

Many readers are probably unaware that over 400 million people in the world today can’t afford, or don’t have access to, basic health care. Rotary believes good health care is everyone’s right and that is why we are dedicated to fighting and preventing disease. Disease Prevention and Treatment is one of Rotary’s Six Area of Focus. Disease and illness results in pain and injury.

Prolonged severe illness may result in loss of employment and income. It affects families. It affects quality of life.

With Christmas approaching we should all give thanks that we live in a country free from many of the diseases that plague other countries.

Rotarians are committed to helping people live healthy lives and that is why December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month. Our signature project is Polio Eradication. But polio is not the only disease or aspect of healthy living on which Rotarians have spent their time and energies. Disease prevention and treatment takes on many forms, from supporting studies, to helping immunize people, to improving drinking water and the sanitation infrastructure.

The world relies on Rotary to tackle these global challenges, and to set an example for others to follow. For example Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) was launched in 1995 in Tulagi, Solomon Islands, by the Rotary Club of Honiara and Bribie Island's own Rotary District 9600.

RAM comes under the umbrella of Rotary Australia World Community Service and the volunteers work to eliminate malaria. In the 1900s, malaria was pandemic in the world. Just fifteen years ago, malaria killed a child every 30 seconds. Can you only imagine the outcry if a child in Australia died every 30 seconds from a preventable disease?

Today, thanks to the efforts of Rotary, the number of deaths has fallen by 60 percent.

Another way in which Rotarians have elected to provide attention to an area of disease concern is through a Rotarian Action Group (RAG).

RAG is a voluntary organisation that functions independently of Rotary

International. Each RAG establishes its own rules, dues requirements, and administrative structure. There is a RAG for Alzheimers/Dementia, Blindness, Hearing Loss, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Mental Health, Dental and Polio Survivors and associates.

Further examples of Rotary Disease Prevention efforts are:

• Providing clean water: Rotary has worked with partners to provide more than 80 percent of Ghana’s people with clean water to fight Guinea worm disease; and • Reducing HIV infection: In Liberia, Rotary members are helping women get tested for HIV early in their pregnancies. They used prenatal care to reduce new HIV infections in children by 95 percent over two years.

At the time of writing and researching this article a friend and fellow Bribie Rotarian was diagnosed with a very rare fatal disease. He was told there was nothing more the Doctors could do and he died a week later. I dedicate this article to my friend and hope that by writing articles such as this we can raise awareness and support of the work Rotary does in the area of disease prevention and treatment. My prayers also go out to all in our society who suffer from such diseases.

Christmas came early for Caboolture Hospital’s hard-working volunteers at a party held in their honour recently (Thursday 6 December).

More than 30 volunteers and hospital executives attended the annual Christmas party event at the Centenary Lakes Sports Club in Caboolture.

Executive Director Dr Lance Le Ray said the added support and guidance that volunteers provided to Caboolture Hospital patients, their families and the community was invaluable. “Each time a volunteer provides a welcoming smile or a friendly listening ear, it makes such a great difference to the care we provide and people’s lives,�

Dr Le Ray said.

“Volunteers undertake a variety of roles, such as meeting and greeting people at reception, preparing baby bundles, delivering magazines or simply having a friendly chat with patients. “Our volunteers also help in the chapel and support patients who have suffered a heart attack.�

more than $274,000 last financial year through sales at the hospital canteen. “The money raised by the auxiliary is directed into patient care,� Dr Le Ray said.

“Earlier this year, the hospital took delivery of a $170,000 transfer stretcher for patients requiring an emergency handover to other hospitals, thanks to the hard-working volunteers. “The hospital has also purchased new bed mattresses, highly-specialised heart monitoring and testing equipment, physiotherapy tools and several clinical items, thanks to the auxiliary.�

Dr Le Ray said Caboolture Sports Club had generously donated the venue hire cost and food. “This event is a small way we can say thank you to our volunteers, who do such a wonderful job throughout the year,� Dr Le Ray said.

“Thank you for generously giving your time to help others and caring together for our community.�

The geysers at Te Puia erupt around 20 times a day and the thermal beaches can not only help soak away aches and pains, it can also v=cook the fish you may have caught during the day. There is so much to do in Rotorua including a jet boat thermal safari, the skyline gondola and the Hells Gate geothermal park and mud spa.

There has to be a few Lord of the Rings enthusiasts out there who would enjoy the Bay Of Plenty and Gisborne. Apart from the long stretches of white sandy beaches New Zealand’s only active marine volcano is located on White Island. The region is well noted also for Marlin and Tuna fishing and provides some spectacular diving. But of course it is the Hobbiton Movie Tours that are the number one attraction. Visit places like the Green Dragon Inn, Hobbit holes and the Mill. At dusk canoe on Lake McLaren to see the enchanting Gloworm Canyon or explore the Bay on

The Bay of Islands a wildlife tour.

One of the most exhilarating tours heading north is located in Waitomothat of cave exploration through the underground river while floating on a tube. The city of Hamilton is known as a horticulture heaven while Otorohanga is the home of the Kiwi reserve and bird park.

While to the south you can experience nature at its finest, the north boasts the Coromandel Peninsula and some of the finest beaches where you have a choice of water temperature for your bathing needs. Enjoy a 2 hour walk to Wentworth Valley Falls or explore the old gold mine at Thames. Enjoy the scenery along the coast road of the Bay of Islands before making your way south the Auckland for your journey home.

Take one last cruise on the ferry to Waiheki Island to sample some of the finest wines in New Zealand at places like the Brickworks winery as you watch the sunset over another perfect day.

There is so much to see in New Zealand that the best advice I can give is ‘Just Go’.

Probus Club members

Pumicestone Passage Probus enjoying a game of Croque and raising much needed funds for the Neighbourhood Watch Centre Bribie Island!

Recently the Bribie Island Croquet Club had a fund-raising day to support the Local Neighbourhood Community Centre which helps families who are really doing it tough, especially at this time of year. Unfortunately, the centre was broken into with so many of their essential operating equipment stolen or smashed. The Pumicestone Probus Club decided they wanted to help and entered 3 teams to help raise money and support them get back on their feet.

Most of the club had never held a croquet mallet before, let alone played croquet! The day was full of laughs and good old fashion bantering. Over 18 service clubs competed from around the region and Bribie Croquet Club were great hosts.

For the past 2 years the Pumicestone Probus club won the much sort after mallet prize, however this year despite a fantastic effort by all, they came a very close second by only half a point. It was a great game by all clubs.

She is urging campers to obey instructions about fire safety when camping in National Parks.

Minister for Environment Leeanne Enoch said it was critical that visitors to our National Parks listened to directions from fire experts.

“The Premier said, “it is extremely important that campers follow the direction of firefighters, rangers and other agencies, for their own safety, and the safety of our hard-working firefighters,”

“As the state is being impacted by these unprecedented bushfires, the priority is the safety of Queenslanders”. “Make sure you obey signage, barriers and directions of authorities.

“Some National Parks and walking tracks have also been closed due to fire dangers. For the most up-to-date information, visit the National Parks website.”

My husband Loy & I have been trading at Bribie Island Bakehouse (located at Banksia Beach and Sandstone Point) since Feb 2001. We are a locally owned and operated family business.

My Husband and I moved to bribe and purchased our first shop just before the birth of our first child. The following year we had our second child.

Our children attended our local primary schools, and both have participate in local sports teams, they are now in high school so consequently my husband and I have supported our local clubs and proved them with our catering services.

Because we are ‘locals’ and have been for many years, our business has grown into your local bak-ery and café, we are proud to say that we are well known in our region for a hard working family and have been consistent in producing the very best of service and food for many of our regular customers - We have also had the pleasure of enjoying and making some wonderful friendships through our business and being involved in our local community in many ways by supplying freshly made cakes and much more for special occasions for birthdays, weddings, special milestones and we also catered for wakes.

Chair of the U3A Beachmere Steering Committee, Dave Newell, said he was very pleased with the support of everyone in getting the group off the ground.

“From our Launch Day in late October we have had so much support from people wanting to join, and from people putting their hands up to be Tutors and Volunteers,” David said.

“Of course, everyone at Bribie U3A and Caboolture U3A, have been a tremendous support and source of encouragement as well,” Dave said.

“If people miss the Sign On day, we encourage them to visit the U3A Beachmere office at the Beachmere Community Hall in Progress Avenue. They can join up as members, or sign up for classes, or register as a Volunteer.

We would love more people to offer to Tutor classes for Term Two as well.”

Changing the Game For Women

"Girls worldwide who play sport are more likely to attend and stay in school, more likely to finish their education, more likely to be in better health and earn higher wages during the course of their lives.”- The Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO

The scene of women’s sport has dramatically changed for the better over recent decades. There are not only numerous campaigns across Australia promoting the benefits of women’s sport, including VicHealth, but there has also been an increase in media coverage and broadcasting deals which boosts athletes’ profiles, giving them the chance to shine in a once male dominated field. Semi-professional and professional women’s Rugby League, Rugby Sevens, Rugby Union, Cricket and AFL teams have been established over the last two years and have provided women an opportunity to shine in their own right.

2018 has also been a year that has highlighted the steps that have been taken to change the game for women on a national scale. including the introduction of the Women’s Big Bash League and the Women’s NRL teams having the chance to raise a premiership trophy for the first time.

There have long been strong stereotypical views surrounding women in sport and it is a significant positive move forward to see these view challenged. Everyone has heard the classic cliché ‘you throw like a girl’ and have heard someone call knee pushups ‘girl push-ups’. The stereotypical language that we use can discourage

girls from participating in physical activities and this has contributed to our male dominated sporting arena. If we are to genuinely change the game for girls and women, we must address these issues from the grassroots level.

Coaches, athletes and parents need to provide a positive environment whereby all athletes, regardless of gender, feel safe, supported and encouraged to be the best they can be.

Having moved so far beyond the 19th century, when female participants were only from high social classes and were only able to participate in events that men claimed to be feminine, women’s sport has become a commodity and its value is reflected in the female participation rates and medal events in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. At the 2018 Games there was an equal number of medal sports for both men and women the first time in the events history,

Sally Pearson, Olympic and Commonwealth Hurdle Champion was quoted to say “This is such a positive move for all sports and I am particularly proud that this initiative will commence in my home-town on the Gold Coast in 2018, to be held up as a shining example for other events to follow.’

It is such a profound accomplishment that women’s sport is starting to be seen as equal to men’s sport. As women’s sport flourishes and begins to take its rightful place in the society, girls now have positive role models that they can look up to and emulate.

So come on girls, lace up those running shoes and go get ‘em!

Sandstone Point Community Carols was a huge success!

Heather Dawber the Convener at Sandstone Point Community Carols 2018 said “It was an outstanding success with over 2,500 attending and the whole event was supported by our local community and businesses. With local artists entertaining the crowds to jumping castles, merry go round and much more. My committee works extremely hard all year to bring this fabulous event to everyone.

Teens urged to vaccinate against Meningococcal

The Queensland Government is encouraging more young Queenslanders to take advantage of the meningococcal ACWY vaccine, as new data reveal only around 64 per cent of Year 10 students received the jab through the School Immunisation Program last school year.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles said the Palaszczuk Government had funded a free meningococcal ACWY vaccine for adolescents and young adults since February 2017.

“To combat the rise of meningococcal, we introduced a free vaccine last year for Year 10 students and adolescents aged 15 to 19 years – the age group that has the highest rate of meningococcal infection,” Mr Miles said.

“The free program was introduced to address rising rates of meningococcal W disease and to protect young people and the community by decreasing the proportion of people carrying the bacteria.

“The vaccine is the best form of protection against the disease, but unfortunately some young people are missing out.

“In some cases school kids are missing out on the vaccine because the consent form for the vaccination hasn’t been returned to school.

“I urge parents of students in Year 10 in 2019 to keep an eye out for the consent form next year.”

Queensland’s Immunisation Program, Medical Director, Dr Alun Richards said while a number of students were getting vaccinated through their GPs or later on during their schooling, not all adolescents were receiving a dose.

“Young adults have higher carriage rates of the bacteria that causes meningococcal disease, which is why they are a priority group for vaccination,” Dr Richards said.

“For parents of students who have missed their meningococcal vaccination at school, I urge them to arrange access to this free vaccine with their family GP or local immunisation provider.”

Dr Richards said that while meningococcal disease was rare, it could also be deadly.

“Meningococcal disease is a very serious infection that can cause severe scarring, loss of limbs, brain damage and death.

People with meningococcal disease can become extremely unwell very quickly,” he said.

“Last year we saw a spike in meningococcal cases in Queensland with 69 people contracting the disease.

So far this year, 50 people have been diagnosed.

“Symptoms of meningococcal disease can include vomiting, fever, headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, drowsiness, joint pain or a rash of red-purple spots or bruises.

“Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek urgent medical attention.”

MICK’S PATCH There are many common plants that may be growing in and around your home that could be extremely toxic for our fury friends, including cats, dogs, horses and humans for that matter.

Some animals may never go near these plants as they seem to instinctively know that danger looms, but some species have toxic seeds, flowers and foliage which if ingested could be fatal indeed?

Child care centres now have to have their gardens assessed to be compliant to make sure that no toxic plants are located on their grounds to ensure the safety of our children. When it comes to the home though, we tend to be more relaxed, especially with properties that may have just changed hands with established gardens already in place.

I often find plants growing near the entrance of buildings which could be extremely toxic if ingested by pets or children. I personally would rather hug a tree any-day, than have to point the finger and tag it for removal, but I am going to list and describe some common plants over the next few articles that are toxic if ingested by pets. Awareness is the key, and once you can identify most of your plants around your home, you will be armed to make informed decisions accordingly. So, stay tuned indeed.

Some plants may actually be more toxic to dogs than cats and vice versa, much in the same way that human medications and certain foods or herbs may also be toxic to animals too. Garlic, onions and shallots which are members of the Allium family, can be poisonous to cats and dogs upon ingestion, but the level of toxicity can vary due to each animal’s unique individual metabolism.

But when it comes to living with kittens and puppies which can wreak havoc“with the force of a miniature tornado”as they clamber over your potted house plants or dig up your favourite bulbs in the garden in 5 seconds flat; then knowledge is power indeed, if you ever need to rescue them!

Some common toxic plants for pets: If you suspect your pet has eaten these plants then seek veterinary attention immediately. Stay tuned for next issue also, for more examples of toxic plants!

Sago palm - Cycas revoluta

All parts of Cycas revoluta are poisonous, but the seeds contain the largest amount of toxin. The ingestion of just one or two seeds can result in very serious side effects. Symptoms:

kidney failure. As little as (2) petals can cause toxicity and even the ‘vase water’can be toxic if ingested. Most flower arrangements contain Lily flowers and most gardens have them too!

Beautiful plant- but all parts of the plant are poisonous, dogs are drawn to the seed pods which are toxic. Symptoms: Salivation, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle tremors and seizures which can last several days. Best to remove berries

Cyclamen.

All parts of these plants are toxic; however, the highest concentration of the toxin is in the tuber and roots.

Symptoms: Include intense vomiting, drooling and diarrhoea. Causes heart rhythm abnormalities and seizures.

Plants go into dormancy and the rhizome can be dug up by pets playing

before seeds are produced. Take care when pruning plants. Thoroughly remove all clippings, seeds and berries from the garden.

Pittosporum tobira - ‘Miss Muffet’ or Dwarf Pittosporum Lovely and compact, evergreen, slowgrowing shrub that thrives in our coastal environment. Pittosporum tobira - ‘Miss Muffet’- as the trade name may suggest, characteristically forms a small mound in habit as it matures. 1m tall and 1.5m wide. It’s origins herald from Japan and China and subsequently is often used in Japanese garden designs. It is quite drought tolerant once established but prefers part shade to retain the rich, emerald- green, glossy foliage they are known for. They do tolerate some full- sun conditions but require regular watering during hot dry periods. P. tobira ‘Miss Muffet’ has small, scented, cream coloured flowers with five petals arranged in small clusters at the top of the plant in spring. They can tolerate a range of soil conditions but prefer it to be well drained. These plants can be mass planted under trees, used as informal hedges, feature specimens in the landscape or planted in tubs and pots.

Very resilient plants indeed and grow well on Bribie Island! “Ok- now its time for a swim”

There are a number of towns within short travelling distance from Bribie Island that have less population than the Island but have full range of services and shops. This is particularly noticeable in the summer when the island population almost doubles with holidaymakers.

Towns such as Nambour (population 18182), Gympie (population 18367) or Warwick (population 13862) compared to the Island plus Sandstone (population 22621) have a full range of shops from Woolworth and Big-W, Coles and K-Mart, men’s shops such as Lowes as well as JB Hi-Fi and Sanity.

When is the island going to get out from under the monopolistic constraints of the Woolworths brand that is stifling expansion on the island. The only recourse to the island population for a variety of shops is to take the dangerous road trip to Morayfield to get any chance of an increased range or selection of goods.

Come on the island population put your foot down and stop Woolworths monopoly.

More than $76,000 in council community grants for Bribie

Local community groups in Bribie Island will share in more than $76,000 in the first round of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Community Grants Program for 2018/19.

Councillor for Division 1 Brooke Savige said funding of $15,000 would be allocated to the Bribie Tennis Club for a lighting upgrade and an extra $15,000 to Bribie Island Croquet Club to build an extra half-sized croquet court.

“I am also pleased to announce an additional funding grant of $15,000 to enable the Bribie Island Community Arts Society to undertake a kitchen upgrade and a further $15,000 to the Sandstone Point Community Association Inc. to install four-split system air conditioning units in a community hall,” she says.

“All these clubs provide the community with a range of opportunities to get more people involved in getting active and creative.

“So it’s only fitting they receive funding to be able to cater for growing membership with quality infrastructure and comforts.”

Cr Savige said she was also excited to announce $5000 to the Rotary Club of Bribie Island Inc. and Conservation Volunteers Australia to undertake important environmental projects in the local community.

“Council’s Community Grant funding will allow the Rotary Club of Bribie Island Inc. to assist them with their project to plant trees at Rotary Park to support Rotary International’s initiative of planting 1.2 million trees around the world,” Cr Savige said.

“For Conservation Volunteers Australia, a funding grant of $5000 will enable this group

to undertake weed control, revegetation, marine debris clean-up and dune stabilisation along the Woorim foreshore.

“These are fantastic environmental initiatives that will surely benefit our local community into the future and help draw more visitors to Bribie Island.

“I can’t wait to see these projects, events and initiatives brought to life to not only benefit our local community, but also to keep them connected and active for years to come.”

Other community groups to receive funding under this round of grants include: • C&K Banksia Beach Community Kindgergarten (Branch of the Creche and Kindergarten Association Limited - $981 for two iPads and cases • Bribie Island Surf Living Saving Club Inc. - $2,000 to upgrade the club storage building with improved roller doors • Bribie Island Community Arts Society - $4000 to assist with 30th Anniversary celebrations of the Bribie Island Community Arts.

Council’s Community Grants Program, which is offered in two rounds each year, is comprised of six grant categories that aim to develop and support organisations and individuals to positively contribute to the region’s community wellbeing, environmental sustainability, economic prosperity and cultural life.

Cr Savige congratulated all successful applicants and encouraged other community groups and individuals interested in applying for the next round of the Community Grants Program to visit council’s website for more information.

Applications for the second round of the 2018-19 program will open on February 1, 2019.

Happy Christmas & have a Great New Year!

Christmas Orphans

[Please Note 1: This story serves to remind us all, that in times of bushfires, drought and changing expectations; life in the bush goes on, and on – just because there is no other way to do it.] [ Please Note 2: It is not a good idea, nor is it recommended by the Author, for anyone to try and produce the Christmas Pudding Sauce recipe contained in this tale. The recipe sort of works, but has the curious effect of rendering the pudding irrelevant!! ]

This is a story about how some things are in the Australian Bush at Christmas time.

The place is irrelevant. The time is apparent, and the location could be anywhere in that beautiful, vast, heartbreaking place, The Outback.

And, as in many cases, the story has its genesis in the events surrounding the people who live in remote places and know the meaning of loneliness and how to deal with it !! This particular tale kicked off in the late 1950s and carried on until 2002…and maybe, somewhere it is still happening?

Apart from the cattle and sheep stations, which surround local, regional communities, the populations of such communities begin to drain away in the weeks before Christmas, as most of the workers in the towns head ‘ home’ for Christmas. It has always been like this, although with the arrival of social media and the internet some of this human drainage has slowed, but not stopped.

Remaining in the towns, were those persons who were considered necessary for the continuing function of the vital community services needed to keep the town up and running, if you know what I mean?

They were known as the “ Christmas Orphans “.

These people were the nurses, maybe one doctor, a couple of bank johnnies, a copper or two and usually one of the two town diesel mechanics – to make sure the diesel generators kept the lights on and the fridges cold. But it was always lonely for this mob because they were on their own. Their families were days away by road; the local Pub, good as they were, were still pubs.

Nurses quarters and coppers barracks were empty spaces when only one or two people lived in them, and the bank johnnies, well – they had local bank houses which were OK during the typical year but became pretty ordinary when the Christmas drainage began.

One of the Governesses, at one of the closest cattle stations to town, about 50 km., away to the West of the town, had a flash of brilliance one morning while making up some extra beds for ringers who had nowhere to go over Christmas – “ Why not invite the Christmas Orphans to come out for Christmas ? “.

The owners were all for it, there was plenty of space on the big, wide verandahs, characteristic of all station homesteads in that country – there was plenty of tucker, and 50 km was nothing in that country as far as distance was concerned.

Of such things, traditions are created.

So, a couple of weeks before the Christmas Drain began, the word was spread around the town, the pubs, the banks, the local cricket club, the police station, the railway station etc. ; Christmas Orphans, could come to the station after lunch on Christmas Eve and stay until Boxing Day. Just bring yourself, or a small something if you wished, everything else was already there, beds, showers, tucker and good company. Not much else was needed anyway !!

Not in that country.

There weren’t many Christmas Orphans anyway, two young coppers, three nurses, three and a half bank johnnies, one was on probation, one black hander [ the diesel mechanic ] and four spare ringers – it was too far and too hot for their old Toyota to make it safely back to Longreach in Queensland and then back to the station.

Community

The town mob, the coppers, nurses and bank johnnies rocked up in two Land Rovers, one of which had “ Bush Nurse “ painted on the side. Marilyn was allowed to bring it out to the station because she was the Bush Nurse anyway, it was her vehicle, and she had all her ‘ stuff ‘ in it, besides she could take it anywhere if there was an emergency.

And the other one was the spare Police wagon, with a radio, in case it was needed back in town or at a crash !!

Willy, who was ‘ half ‘ the bank johnny, the one on probation, brought his mouth organ – Nancy, the governess whose idea it was in the first place, had a violin, which she could play the hell out of – and one of the coppers had a hidden talent; he could make a guitar sing.

Wilson, the black hander, brought his own Ford 250 with the best sounding V8 for hundreds of kilometres around…he also had enough tools and welders on it to build a truck, if he had to?

The Hardchambers, the mob who owned the station, had been convinced by Nancy, their governess, that no one should be lonely or without a place to go at Christmas. And that was the reason why the ‘ Orphans ‘ were camping on their verandah and working out with Gretel Hardchamber how they were going to cook the turkeys, set up the tables, bag the puddings and generally help around the place for Christmas.

The Christmas turkeys had spent the last two months eating corn behind the house chook yard, and all the vegetables would come from the station homestead garden, well those that were left in the garden after the galahs and the corellas had finished with the leafy greens !!

Gretel’s Mother, Hannah, had made the puddings, as she said “ I have been making the bloody things for forty years, a few more won’t hurt. “ They were her mixture of suet, fruit, rum, flour and some other stuff, as heavy as your average chair, but they were bloody good to eat !!

Annabel, one of the nurses, had her own recipe for the sauce for the Christmas puddings, and she had a practice run in the kitchen on Christmas Eve…condensed milk, warm water, Milo, a solid splosh of rum and a pinch of flour seemed to do the job.

Gretel, Hannah and Annabel had a serious tasting session, which resulted in all of them laughing their faces off at absolutely nothing.

Tricky !!

The youngest of the two coppers, the one who could not play the guitar, had the job of lopping the heads off the three turkeys, dressing them and heaving the insides over behind the engine shed for the dingoes… who would appreciate this gesture, because they had been looking at the turkeys for quite some time – wondering how they could get them.

Christmas Eve on the verandah of the station was as you would expect.

Ringers in clean, shirts and jeans with wet hair plastered down; coppers and nurses relaxed lying back on the camp beds, although Annabel caught a couple of glances from the youngest coppers, and, gave them back !!

The proper bank johnnies tried the ‘ Singing Minstrel ‘ episode, accompanied by Nancy, who had her violin begging for more and the ‘ half ‘ bank johnny had his mouth organ sounding like Larry Adler!

All of these people were a part of a much more significant and stronger story: the story of the Australian Outback and what you do and how you live when you are in its arms.

Because it does hold you, it places a small fire in your heart and no matter what you do, you cannot put that fire out…the spark leaves you when your spirit leaves you…only to join all the other sparkling souls floating about in the Outback, looking out for each other and the people who live there.

You can hear these sparkling spirits in the cry of the black cockatoo, the howl of the dingoes and soft, susurrations of the desert winds in the she-oaks on the lonely ridges of hard stone – a sound once heard never forgotten.

Marriages came from these first Christmas Orphan verandahs and children came from those marriages, and they, in their turn, in the cycle of life had their children. I know of a verandah that has stories and memories…I am in those stories !!

Bribie seniors get together for Christmas with member for Longman Susan Lamb MP

Susan Lamb MP Federal Member for Longman and Everald Compton – Seniors Advocate.

Over 150 Seniors came together recently at the Orchid House with the Federal Member for Longman, Susan Lamb MP for a Seniors’ Forum and Christmas Morning Tea. The Forum provided people with an opportunity to voice their concerns on the issues that are important to older Australians.

There were a variety of guest speakers on the day, such as the Hon Steven Miles MP, State Minister for Health, who talked about local health services, including Federal Labor’s election commitment to build an Urgent Care Clinic on Bribie. Seniors’ advocate Everald Compton also spoke at the event, noting the important role that seniors’ events play in making sure elderly Australians are engaged in the current issues.

Everald Compton said “It was great to talk to people on Bribie Island about important issues impacting on older Australians. Elderly people in our community are not always connected the same way young people are, which is why Susan Lamb’s Seniors’ Forums are a great way for seniors to keep on top of the things that matter to them,” “There were some questions about the reforms to dividend imputation credits, which is a policy area that I’m

continuing to work with Labor on.

When the policy was first announced, Bill Shorten listened to my advice and excluded all pensioners and part-pensioners from the changes.

I’m continuing to consult with the community about the policy; Bill and Susan are working with me so that we can strike the right balance.”

Natalie, who lives in Sandstone Point, said she enjoyed meeting other local people and was able to find out about important legal issues that affect seniors.

“It was lovely to see so many beautiful, older faces from Bribie and Sandstone Point at Susan Lamb’s Seniors’ Forum.

There was a lot of useful information about wills and power of attorney, which made me think that I need to do a bit more to prepare myself. I definitely came home with more knowledge and a smile on my face.” Natalie said.

Let’s Get Physical, Sandstone Point!

Local calls for a fitness park in Sandstone Point have been answered, with the brand new exercise equipment unveiled in November.

Councillor for Division 1 Brooke Savige said the $64,000 investment would give local residents more opportunities to head outdoors and get active.

“I’m thrilled that this is open ahead of the summer school holidays for locals to enjoy and hope it will be a positive motivator for New Year’s Resolutions once Christmas feasting is done,” she said.

“Council values healthy, active lifestyles and we always want to see residents out and about getting fit.

“I want to thank local residents for putting this on Council’s agenda and I’m proud to be able to have delivered it.”

The fitness stations include nine different pieces of equipment including a butterfly press, back extension, pull up bar, cycle seat, trapeze rings, leg lift and dip bar, sit up board, shoulder wheel, fitness stencils - ladder and circles

“Whether you want to get fit or recovering from injury, this new exercise equipment installation will give the community greater opportunity to exercise for free and boost social interaction,” she said.

“Come down and get involved, even Arnie had his first day at the gym!”

Women Commentators - A Breath of Fresh Air

I promised to devote the December ‘On the Paddock’ topic to our successful Australian Women’s Soccer Team, The Matilda’s, however I have pushed this topic into the in-tray for another month. I want to celebrate the inclusion of Women Cricket Commentators in the 2018/19 Channel Seven Cricket Commentary Team. For many diehard cricketers, it would have been hard to come to terms with the fresh innovative approach by the Free-to-air broadcaster – especially those who have been used to the ‘Boys Club’ Channel 9 Commentary team over so many years.

Don’t get me wrong – I am a cricket tragic who was preparing for a similar ‘male dominated’ coverage from the new free-to-air host, Channel 7. At the announcement of the 2018/19, Seven's head of cricket, David Barhan said, "It's appropriate and long overdue, with cricket being a sport that has done so much for women. 1983 was the last time there was a female voice in Test cricket in Australia on free to air TV, 35 years ago. It doesn't seem right to me.” (Source: ABC News online 10 July 2018). Channel Seven choose one of England’s leading sports broadcasters, Alison Mitchell as one of the head callers for our Australian domestic Test series. Mitchell has been commentating men’s and women’s international cricket since 2007 and has an extensive history in sports commentary on television and radio – Alison Mitchell is certainly a breath of fresh air and adds enormous weight to the future of gender diversification in commentary across the world. Mitchell is not the only female voice that can heard as part of Seven's coverage. Mel McLaughlin joins James Brayshaw as dual hosts along with retired Australian Test and one-day international player Lisa Sthalekar. The strategy of integrating female talent into our iconic sport of cricket commentary was introduced in the previous Big Bash Series on Channel 10. The evolution and success of our women’s sporting teams across Australia has supported the need to place talented female journalists and sportswomen behind the camera – a positive cultural change.

All they want for Christmas is you – buckle up to arrive safely

Queenslanders can give the best possible gift this Christmas to their friends and loved ones – themselves, with the message to buckle up and drive safely.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said a recent increase in crashes involving people not wearing seatbelts prompted the renewed call to action on seatbelts.

“Shockingly, on average, about one in four people killed in vehicles on Queensland roads aren’t wearing seatbelts,” Mr Bailey said.

“This trend increased for the first six months of this year to about 30 per cent.

“It's concerning that, decades after laws changed to make seatbelts mandatory, that people need reminding about the importance of wearing a seatbelt.

"The campaign, All They Want For Christmas Is You, will directly target those people.

“If you crash without a seatbelt, you’ll be far more likely to be killed than injured.

Seatbelts improve the chances of surviving a crash by 200 per cent.

“That chance you take will definitely affect other people – people you love and want to be there for, especially at Christmas."

The seatbelt safety campaign will run statewide on radio, billboards and social media until late December.

It is the first outcome from the Seatbelts: Let’s make it Click forum, held in Townsville in August as part of Queensland Road Safety Week.

Mr Bailey said a second phase of the seatbelts campaign would launch in February 2019 with a different key message.

“This campaign will be the first under the new 'StreetSmarts QLD' road safety banner, encouraging Queenslanders to use their Street Smarts to be a better road user when on or around the road,” he said.

“The Queensland Government's former road safety branding Join the Drive delivered a number of successful campaigns since launching in 2013 and grew a strong and active social media community around road safety issues in Queensland.

“Street Smarts will build on Join the Drive’s success with a real-time education program to help everyone including drivers, bike riders and pedestrians become better informed about using our roads safely.”

Don’t be a fishing fool – know your rules

Just like fresh Queensland prawns for Christmas lunch, fishing and summer are a perfect match.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said taking your children out fishing over the summer holidays, or just going out on the water with friends, created lifetime memories.

“But if you are planning a fishing trip this holiday season, don’t forget to check the rules before you drop a line in the water,” Minister Furner said. ”It’s important that everyone is aware of and follows the rules, which ensure sustainable fisheries for future generations of Queensland fishers.

“Everybody, regardless of whether they are experienced or first timers, should familiarise themselves with the relevant rules that apply, including size and possession limits, how to correctly measure fish, fishing gear restrictions and closed seasons.

“There are different rules for fishing in tidal and fresh waters, marine parks and interstate.”

Fishing tips and responsibilities Check your limits For a list of size and possession limits, visit www.fisheries.qld.gov.au or download the Qld Fishing app.

Measuring devices Use a ruler with an end stop to measure the length of your fish or a crab gauge to measure your crabs.

Identify your catch Always carry a fish identification guide or download the Qld Fishing app.

Fish that look similar can actually be different species with different size and possession limits.

If you can’t ID it, free it.

Gently does it When a fish is hooked, avoid playing it on the line for too long.

A stressed fish will quickly become exhausted and have less chance of survival if required to be released.

Check your gear A number of restrictions apply to fishing gear. Check the rules at www.fisheries. qld.gov.au If it’s not yours, don’t touch it Interfering with crab apparatus you didn’t set is illegal. If you see apparatus that may have been abandoned, report it to Fishwatch on 1800 017 116.

The Minister said anglers could also purchase a Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) before fishing in any of our 63 stocked dams and weirs.

“Stocked impoundments are replenished regularly making them the perfect sustainable fishing option,” he said.

“Species stocked include barramundi, golden perch, silver perch, Australian bass, Mary River cod, Murray River cod and saratoga.”

The cost of an annual permit is $50 per person, $36 for concession card holders or $10 for a weekly permit. Permits are available at www.fisheries.qld.gov. au, by calling 1300 575 359, or at any Australia Post outlet in Queensland.

Last week they held their final challenge and awards day for the Bribie Island Boat Charters Fishing Challenge 2018.

At the Awards Celebration I spoke to Cookie from Brisbane, one of the clients of Fishability QLD, who said to me, “It only costs $5 which includes drinks and food. I look forward to the day every month; we have so much fun. I come

to bettering people’s lives through community support and outdoor fun”.

Fishability QLD’s qualified staff and dedicated volunteers can provide access to a range of fishing and outdoor activities. The Bribie Island Boat Charters Fishing Challenge is a monthly event and the staff, volunteers and clients head out on an 8 to 12-seater BBQ Boat into our Pumicestone Passage, to compete in a year-long fishing competition. Their clients just love the day and look forward to it every month, to re-join their mates for a friendly fishing competition.

The 30th annual Blue Water Classic Game Fishing Tournament was hosted by the Bribie Island Game Fishing Club

BIGFC BWC 2018

The 30th annual Blue Water Classic Game Fishing Tournament was hosted by the Bribie Island Game Fishing Club on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of December. Mother Nature was relatively kind on the Saturday with good conditions, light winds and a slight swell, however Sunday’s fishing time was reduced due to the onset of 20 plus knot winds increasing from around 10am.

These tournaments are fished under the Game Fishing Association of Australia rules and fish are tagged and released with the most prized species being the billfish. There was a total of 20 strikes, 16 hook ups and 6 fish tagged over the day and a half. Of the tagged fish, there were 4 Black Marlin and 2 Mahi Mahi also known as Dolphin Fish.

A good total of 11 boats entered the tournament, mostly Bribie Island vessels; Fake Taxi, Game On, Hard ‘N’ Up, Jacque’s Black, Kill N Grill, Nobby's Way, R ated II, Surface Tension and True Lies, with Reefa and White Horse coming up from Newport. Unfortunately 2 teams were unable to get out and fish due to boat issues. Also, a big congratulations to the boys Riley Brown with his boat Fake Taxi and Jackson Hyland. These two anglers, only 16 and 15 years, braving some big seas and taking out top awards for the weekend.

Presentation of awards was held in a marquee at the Pacific Harbour Marina who also supplied ample space for mooring of competition boats over the weekend and the use of the marina’s facilities. A big thank you to Mark Forster from Mancorp Quality Homes on the major sponsorship for this tournament and providing the sumptuous pig spit roast dinner on Sunday night.

TIDE TIMES FOR January 2019

Coming up to summer holidays, the weather is becoming warmer, and so is the water. Over the past month, rainfall has been well below average and temperatures a little above average.

Apart from the third week of the month, there was little rain and the last week of November brought record temperatures.

The temperature of water in the Passage is a big influence on fishing – where, when and what to target.

School mackerel are one of the fish that hang around most of the year but are harder to catch as the weather warms, although there have still been some hanging around. Jack and Stephen were having a bit of luck with the school mackerel a couple of weeks ago, under the bridge as well as around the Ningi Creek marker. One of the best ways to catch mackerel is from a boat, adrift or anchored; another is to hang off a bridge or jetty – usually at first light, on a slow tide, using pilchards on a gang-hook.

That’s the bait that Jack and his mate were using, which also caught them some nice trevallies.

John had a bit of luck chasing spotted mackerel a bit further out this week, bringing in three 70cm+, from the M2 channel marker, near the NW point of Moreton Island.

Snapper fishing in the Passage should be just about done and dusted for the year, but there are still plenty of undersized ones being caught and sent back to the water. In the canals, Cody and Charlotte found a few snapper, but none more than about the 30cm mark.

The snapper have also been keeping company with some nice-sized sweetlips under the bridge and at the ripples, both being partial to prawns. Toby, Alex and Markus had an evening fishing session last week – one each of moses perch, sweetlip and bream, using prawns, again at the ripples and the bridge.

Grassy sweetlips have been a favourite catch lately, although this will ease off as the water warms further and the summer northerlies kick in. Sweetlip do like a bit of humidity, though they’re a little fussy about time of day, and like a good tidal flow. Dylan found these factors in his favour, when he caught a few good sweetlips early one recent morning, on the run of a rising tide.

On the same day, around the top of the tide, he used mullet to hook up a 60+cm jewfish as well – not big enough to keep but nice to see.

There are plenty of fish that do make fishing worthwhile as we go into summer, especially the mainstays – bream and flathead. Flathead are everywhere right now - Jack’s been catching them in Ningi Creek; Dale and Darren took home five of them, also from Ningi Creek, and Cameron caught a 43cm from the canal-bridge near Banksia Beach Shopping Centre.

Mullet, pillies and prawns have been the best baits to use.

As the summer winds kick in, the water clarity will drop, which helps with fishing shallows and sandbanks. The prawns are starting to run, and that also brings fish along the shorelines, so don’t feel you need to get onto a boat or cast off a jetty to get your fish. Almost anywhere along the island side of the Passage should be a good bet for casting a line.

“It may be over with the snapper for now, but the sand whiting will be around for a while.”

This week has been a great one for bream. Gordon and Debbie, on their yacht, CULATA, caught 16 bream on Tuesday. Only four were keepable, but along with a grunter, shovel-nose and a 50cm flathead, Deb reckoned it was a good morning out. Deb likes to use squid but won’t tell us where their favourite fishing spot is. Her flathead is going to grace an early Christmas dinner.

Whiting are also showing up through the Passage, especially between Gallaghers and Poverty Creek, and seem to be hungry on the falling tide. Worms, of course, are the best bait for whiting.

At last, we can say that the sand crabs are back on the menu. The pots are all over the place; some of the best catches have been south of the bridge.

Seven pots between the first two green markers south of the bridge showed a harvest of 13 keepers, after just a few hours, earlier this week. Hopefully, there will be a few on your Christmas table!

OUR FAIR SHARE

All year I’ve been determined to ensure our electorate receives its fair share. This includes funding for upgrades to our major roads (Bribie Island and Beachmere Roads) to make them safe for all commuters. As readers of my PEN will know, I’ve not backed down and will continue to fight the Government to make these roads a priority.

SAVE OUR SHELLFISH

I have called on the State Government to implement an immediate ban on shellfish collection until strategies are in place to address the ghastly pillaging taking place at Sandstone Point and other parts of our electorate. You may have heard my recent radio interviews on 4BC, 612 ABC and ABC Sunshine Coast where I highlighted the extent of this problem and the risks we face if a ban on shellfish collection is not implemented. OUT AND ABOUT

Getting around the electorate is a big part of my job and what I enjoy the most. I can’t recall a day this year when I have not been out and about in the electorate hearing firsthand about important issues from locals, celebrating the success of our schools, organisations and clubs, or even helping a community group sell raffle tickets.

Of course much of my work involves advocating for locals when they need help and I have been pleased to represent around 720 individual issues this year. I have attended over 250 events and had meetings with around 336 constituents, not to mention the hundreds of locals who have stopped by to talk to me at one of my 96 Mobile Offices held this year.

IMPROVED AFTER-HOURS HEALTH SERVICES

Bribie Island has the highest median age in the state at 59.6 years and with this comes the need for improved health services, particularly after-hours services. I’ve met with the Executive Director of Caboolture & Kilcoy Hospital Services and we will be progressing discussions on improving these services on the Island.

Parliament This year I have attended 11 weeks of Parliament sittings and delivered 19 speeches, addressing local issues impacting on our community. As a member of the Parliamentary Education, Employment and Small Business Committee, I have worked on a number of Inquiries including: Working with Children Bills Inquiry into wage theft in Queensland 2018-19 Budget Estimates Mines Legislation (Resources Safety) Amendment Bill 2018 Education (Overseas Students) Bill 2018
