One of the issues we have, and I am most passionate about is Domestic Violence, bullying and thuggish behaviour from people wanting to scare their victims. I have just learned that in the Sunshine Coast alone from January 2018 to January 2019 there were 1,219 breaches of Domestic Violence orders this is up from the previous year by 9.8%, it is 109 additional breaches last year and is a record high. We have a wonderful organisation that can help anyone with information on where to go and what to do called Hairdressers with Hearts. Please get in touch with them and you can find them on facebook.

A sad State of affairs Local businesses are struggling and across Queensland business confidence is collapsing under Annastacia Palaszczuk and her Labor Government, according to the latest survey from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ).

The quarterly Pulse Survey shows confidence in Queensland’s economic outlook slumped by 5.1 points in the December 2018 quarter. This report is alarming and shows business conditions, confidence and profitability are all falling after four years of the current Government.

Almost half (47%) of Queensland businesses reported declining profitability over the December quarter and our economy is flatlining at a time when we need to create more jobs.

In the Moreton Bay North Region a staggering 1 in every 10 people are unemployed. These figures are not set to improve any time soon with around 165,000 out-of-work Queenslanders now desperately looking for work.

To make matters worse, Queenslanders have been slugged with five new taxes and vital infrastructure spending on projects like upgrading Bribie Island Road has been slashed since 2015.

This isn’t about talking down our great State, because like you I am a proud Queenslander and want nothing but the best for us all. This is simply highlighting the reality for the many people and small businesses struggling to make a living and there are many in our electorate doing it tough.

Queensland used to be Australia’s economic powerhouse and we want this back. We don’t want any new taxes, we don’t want more state debt, we want to see small business thrive and people employed and we need to see spending on vital infrastructure like our congested unsafe roads.

Congratulations to our little preppies who are starting their education journey end of January and hopefully the first day wasn’t too emotional for the parents either!

It’s a year of change for senior students as well, with big reforms coming in senior assessment and the new ATAR system replacing the OP score.

These were changes announced by the LNP in 2014 that have been delayed under the Palaszczuk Labor Government.

It’s the biggest change in almost three decades and will bring our education system into the 21st Century.

Despite Labor’s delay of these reforms – concerns have been raised about the lack of information for students and parents and the lack of support for teachers.

While the delay was disappointing, we recognised the importance of getting these changes right.

As a father of a year 11 student and someone who wants our kids to have a world-class education, we need to make sure the changes are well communicated to parents and students and that teachers are well supported.

Jarrod Bleijie LNP Shadow Minister for Education Dear Editor, Sandstone Point Hotel has applied to Council to increase the number of events held at the hotel to 12 per year, and for multi-day events to be considered as a single event.

There is no proposal to change the allowable noise levels or to improve traffic management during events.

Locals will soon have an opportunity to have a say by making “Properly Made Submissions” to the council [in the prescribed format] quoting Development Application 31643-2016-VCHG-1.

Ken Park A paltry effort Annastacia State Parliament sitting has returned but did you know it has been more than three months since it last convened.

To add insult to injury, the State Government, who sets the Parliament sittings for the year, has scheduled only 6 sitting weeks before the Budget in June with only 6 set aside after this until Christmas. It didn’t sit much last year either, only 37 days in 2018 - a paltry effort indeed.

Parliament is about the Government being answerable to the people and Queenslanders are entitled to scrutinise those running their State.

As one of my LNP colleagues has said the Palaszczuk Government ‘has taken its cue from the satirical television series Yes Minister – “If people don’t know what you’re doing, they don’t know what you’re doing wrong”’.

Crime Stoppers are celebrating their 30th year of operation in Queensland.

They are a vital community organization that supports police by helping prevent and solve crime across the state.

The LNP have always backed Crime Stoppers. We were the first government to give them funding and we promised a $1 million funding boost at the last state election.

Sadly, due to funding issues, they have to close their call center this Friday.

That means 20 staff and 45 volunteers will lose their jobs, but it also means that frontline police officers will now have to take up the slack.

Our police should be fighting crime on the frontline, not staffing call centers.

Just $250,000 a year would save Crime Stoppers.

That’s half of what Labor said it would cost to change the name of the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.

Annastacia Palaszczuk needs to come to the table and save Crime Stoppers.

This is just another example of how Labor’s priorities are all wrong.

Terry Young and his family.

Terry was raised in Kallangur and attended Kallangur State Primary School and Dakabin State High School. He has lived either in, or within 30 minutes of the electorate his entire life. Terry played soccer at North Pine, Caboolture, rugby league at Bribe Island, indoor cricket at Caboolture, along the way creating many strong relationships.

Terry began his career as a store person for Errol Stewarts, working his way up the ladder and eventually opening and managing Chandlers at Caboolture Park Shopping Centre in 1991 - at 23, the youngest manager ever appointed.

Terry then opened and owned The Good Guys franchise in Morayfield in 2001, starting with a staff of 12, which had grown to 55 when he sold it six years later. They had a great reputation for generously supporting

local charities, sporting clubs and other local community organisations in the electorate.

Terry is married with four children and five grandchildren. His father was among other things a journalist and his mother a school teacher, and they instilled a strong love of this great country along with a passion in helping people achieve their very best in whatever career they should embark on.

Terry believes his greatest attributes for serving as the Longman representative in parliament include:

• People skills, ability to negotiate, prioritise expenditure developed over 35 years in business.

• Being in retail for 35 years, understands “serving the public” better than most.

• Having been an employee and

• Negative gearing stays. This is many average Australians’ major form of retirement investment along with super. The ultra rich in the main do not invest in residential property, it is the average Aussie mums and dads. Labor’s abolition of negative gearing would affect already struggling Australians as rents would immediately increase if this tax break is abolished.

• Bribie Island Rd upgrade. Ensuring the state government comes to the party and follows up on the federal coalition governments $20 million commitment to upgrade the road.

• Keeping the boats away. The coalition has a fair and humane immigration plan.

Illegal immigrants who are not vetted, pose a threat to our way of life. This will never be acceptable.

• Keeping the balance of meeting the needs of everyday lower to middle class Australians, the higher income earners, the public service and private enterprise.

They are all important and all deserve a fair go.

When I arrived for our chat, Cathy and Andrew moved some of the gym equipment around and sat together with my tape recorder struggling to separate our voices from the sound of the cooling fans and air conditioner – well if you were a client, the temperature and environment at Fit Beyond 50 is perfect. Cathy and Andrew are the epitome of TEAM which can be summed up

It may be advantageous to mention that Cathy and Andrew are originally from Rotorua, New Zealand where Andrew was a member of the New Zealand Police Force and Cathy worked in Administration and Management prior to their shift to Australia.

As we know, Gyms have popped up everywhere in the past 5 years, however there are a few point of differences between the standard ‘run of the mill’ gymnasium and Fit Beyond 50. The first point of difference is that Fit Beyond 50 provides a very personal and discreet service – The second point of difference is that Fit Beyond 50 is located within Cathy and Andrew’s home void of any branding or fanfare, however when you enter the doors at Fit Beyond 50, you are confronted by a state-of-the-art space decked out for every type of client of any age group. Cathy said, “At one end of the house is our circuit class zone which is operated by Andrew and

Cathy Said, “I was 48 when I was overweight and walked into a gym for the first time to lose the fat I had gained. Around 40% of my body was fat. I became sick after one minute of exercising, I could not do one push up and I wore size 20 clothes. At 49 I was standing on stage participating in my first ever bodybuilding competition. I was wearing size 6 clothes and since then I have competed 5 times including winning the Australian IFBB 2009 Queensland Figure Master title,” Cathy said. “I know what it’s like to walk into a public gym to get assessed and measured up and feel awkward in front of people pumping iron and looking fabulous. I was so proud to be able to create an environment at Fit Beyond 50 for anyone of any age to make a time to discuss their concerns, goals and dreams,” Cathy Said. “Not everyone can walk

and run but everyone can move and eat better and that’s what we encourage.”

It is unique to sit with two people so passionate and committed to each other and their lifestyle. Andrew and Cathy have numerous ways to balance their lives - from the love of animals to the passion of riding their three immaculate Harley Davidson motorbikes.

Their kindness and compassion have led them to rescue ex-Greyhound Racing Dogs which make great pets and companions. They work hard all week and often escape on their Harley’s to the Hinterland of the Sunshine Coast and beyond.

Cathy has a message for anyone that wants to begin the journey of getting fit or feeling healthy.

Cathy says, “You just have to START and find what HAPPY means to you.” There could no other human being on earth that you could sit with and talk openly about your struggle and dreams for a healthier lifestyle. Q&A

What is your advice to all those people out there that want to get fit?

START!!! Make sure you work with someone who is qualified to give you advice for YOU not a generalised plan because your body is different from anyone else. Then try EVERYTHING until you find what you love doing then keep doing it.

Do you see people from varying age groups at Fit Beyond 50?

Yes, we have clients ranging from 25 to 85 in our Personal training and Circuit classes and participants in the Heartbeats classes who are working out in their late 80’s. But we do not work with children.

What is a 12-week fitness challenge?

We always do a 12-week challenge. Our challenges incorporate a personal training session for strength work, a circuit class for toning and aerobic fitness, a cardio program, a home workout and a nutrition plan. Our participants are weighed weekly and have fitness tests and measurements every 4 weeks throughout the challenge because becoming fitter is just as important as weight loss and some people change shape but don’t lose a lot of kilos. Our winners usually lose around 15kgs in 12 weeks, but the best part is that everyone learns how to be active and how to eat well and by the end of the 12 weeks it is their lifestyle.

What motivated you to transform your life and move into the world of fitness?

I hated the way I felt, I was embarrassed to go out and felt old and tired at 48. I would find all sorts of excuses to stay home alone rather than go out with Andrew on his motorbike as all I could think about was how big my butt was hanging off the back seat of the bike! So, I made a new year’s resolution and stuck with it.

Has social mediums (phones) had a positive impact on people living healthier lives?

There is definitely a lot more information on fitness available now through social media but a lot of them are so generalised that they don’t work for many people. You can put fitness apps on your phone but unless you actually stand up and move that app will not help your health. Phones can be positive as I certainly feel safer if I am out walking alone and have my phone but if they are making you sit and scroll rather than move then they can be a negative thing.

If you were to invite any two people for dinner – who would they be and why?

Winston Churchill because he was an amazing speaker, motivator and leader and Arnold Schwarzenegger because okay he is a body builder but he is also an amazing motivator, leader and speaker. Not sure if Winston would like Chicken, sweet potato and salad though.

What is your advice about choosing a healthy diet?

If it’s in a packet READ THE PACKET and learn what the numbers mean and only shop outside of the supermarket. One of my pet hates is that food is marketed as “healthy” but it is really full of sugar and salt. Fat free usually means packed full of sugar, after all marshmallows are fat free!! Some fat free yoghurts have more sugar than ice cream and people are trying to be healthy and are being sabotaged by the marketing.

What do eat at breakfast?

We always have oats for breakfast, with berries and protein powder. On the weekends its pancakes made with oats and protein powder.

What do you enjoy about living on Bribie Island?

Bribie is laid back and friendly, it doesn’t take long to know people and we are smack in between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

What is your secret to a long and happy relationship with Andrew?

As long as I let him shop, he is happy lol. We have always loved the same things, hot rods, Harleys, animals, antiques so we have always had so much in common. Andrew has been going to the gym most of his life and that was about the only thing that we didn’t have in

what Toastmasters has taught me. I now also love to compete in speech contests which I honestly never thought I would be able to do without passing out from fright. Last year I reached the finals in the International speech contest for our District which covers Toastmasters clubs from upper NSW the whole of QLD and NT and Papua New Guinea and in 2017 I place 2nd in the district humorous contest. I missed the competitions this year but I’m still planning to compete later in the year and have also been doing a lot of public speaking on health and fitness on the Island for various community groups.

common until I started. So now about the only thing we don’t do together is Toastmasters, but he is always very supportive of me when I do my speeches. Also, it helps that we work at opposite ends of the house.

What are your top 3 places to travel your Haley Davidsons?

We love the Hinterland and go to Melany and Kenilworth regularly, also out through Somerset to Esk and up the Sunshine Coast, we are very lucky to live in a place with excellent roads and beautiful countryside close by, but really as long as I’m on my bike I’m happy to ride anywhere for as long as possible. We recently rode to Goomeri and back through Gympie which was 500kms and the landscape was beautiful. The best thing about riding a Harley is that complete strangers will come up to you and chat about bikes, life and anything in between. We have met some amazing people on our travels.

Why did you join Toastmasters and what achievements have you made?

I was, well still am, very shy. I knew if I wanted to make my business work, I needed to learn to speak well and with confidence and that’s

Friday was a major learning curve for our expert consultants, Beachmere volunteers and supportive Councillor Peter Flannery who came together for a mock Disaster Management session at

Beachmere’s Disaster Management CoOrdinator, in developing the BCDMT, Operations Manual, that has become the model for facilitating the setting up of an Evacuation and Information Centre during a disaster.

Opening the container kept at the school enabled the team to orientate themselves with the layout of essential supplies needed to set up the Centre. It was deemed a successful session and allowed the experts and volunteers to assess the effectiveness of the Manual and troubleshoot issues as they arose.

Beachmere’s Community Disaster Management Team volunteers come from a diverse range including former police, army, emergency services and nursing personnel who give their time and experience to assist this community.

Caboolture Hospital is welcoming 17 medical interns who start their health career at an exciting time in the hospital’s history.

Executive Director Dr Lance Le Ray said Caboolture Hospital provided a ‘hands-on’ learning environment for medical interns.

“Interns receive practical training in a range of clinical settings, preparing them for medical careers across Australia,” Dr Le Ray said.

“Caboolture is a ‘generalist’ hospital allowing interns to work with a broad scope of patients under the supervision of very experienced mentors and senior clinicians.”

Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services Steven Miles welcomed the interns to the Queensland Health family.

“Today marks a huge milestone for our new doctors as they begin their careers in medicine,” Mr Miles said.

“Caboolture Hospital has an outstanding team of medical professionals, so I know these graduates will take advantage of the opportunities available to them.”

Interns spend a year at Caboolture Hospital and undertake five rotations across various specialities at the hospital.

These rotations include three core terms in medicine, surgery and emergency medicine, in addition to two elective term of their choice in anaesthetics, obstetrics and gynaecology, mental health, or paediatrics.

“At the end of 12 months, if successful, the interns will receive general registration which qualifies them to work in hospitals across Australia,’ Dr Le Ray said. “However, many of our interns really enjoy their first year at Caboolture Hospital and stay with us well into their career, which is very exciting

A Federal Election approaches.

Sometime this year, Australia will have a Federal Election, and we shall, as a Nation, send a new mob of Parliamentarians into our Federal Parliament. In that place they will form a government and govern, this Nation for the next three years, or thereabouts.

Cranky Lizard reckons that it might be a good idea to think about what we are doing and what powers we are conferring on these people that we send into our Federal Parliament.

We all know that the fundamental principles of our Parliament are based upon the Westminster system of government; that which currently applies in the United Kingdom. This is a form of government and a type of parliament which extends back over centuries and can draw from a bottomless well of experience, custom, tradition and knowledge.

The Westminster Parliament has two Houses: The House of Lords and the House of Commons, and it is the House of Commons with its extraordinary powers, and the extension of those powers, which has attracted the attention of Cranky Lizard.

So what powers are we talking about?

“The House of Commons is regarded as the Grand Inquest of the Nation and may inquire into any matter it desires.”

“The power of the House of Commons as an inquisitor does not arise by virtue of any statute or any other written instrument but by virtue of ancient usage and practice [the lex consuentudo Parliamenti].” “…the House of Commons, as part of its power incidental to the Grand Inquest may call for persons, papers and things. Questions asked must be answered or things sought must be provided.

Disobedience to such an order would be contempt.”

A broad interpretation of these powers means the House of Commons, can if it wishes to do so, conduct investigations into any matters and demand that people and documents attend the Parliament and answer questions.

Failure to do so invites contempt of Parliament which, in turn, must be purged by imprisonment or confinement at the pleasure of the House.

It is highly unlikely that this would ever occur – but the latent power exists.

Does that power apply to the Parliaments of Australia? Well, Yes and No.

Much has been written, and many words have been spoken in arguments for and against this question, the result of these discussions, and written arguments is that the matter remains in contention for some and for others it is quite clear that:[ Here I refer to the reference material in direct quotation ]

What this all means is that the people we send to our Commonwealth Parliament are people we entrust with special powers and privileges. Apart from making laws and spending our money – they can, if they decide to do so – compel you to attend Parliament and be subject to severe inquiries about your activities and may use the principle of contempt to ensure that you do so.

As unlikely as it sounds, Parliament can lock you up in prison!

Cranky Lizard points out that this is most unlikely, but there is a precedent, and the power arguably exists.

And another bloody thing…

South East Queensland is becoming overpopulated. Arterial and link roads are rarely free-flowing roads anymore.

Each time Cranky Lizard spots a grove of trees or some open space it seems as if it is only a few short weeks and the houses; those that are getting smaller and smaller and closer to each other are cobbled together and another suburb named after trees, or explorers, or football players, or tennis players or whatever appears on the map.

The popularity of this region of Queensland is creating its own problems.

The current State Government focuses on two highly unionised sectors of the economy, education and health.

Both of these sectors deserve Government focus and funding for they are in a symbiotic relationship with growth – but growth also requires infrastructure and despite the efforts of hard-working and well-intentioned local members of the State Parliament of Queensland, strategic infrastructure planning is not readily evident in the Bribie Island road corridor. Bribie Island access points or even Bribie Island building planning.

Commonsense will tell you building office blocks and apartments on Bribie Island thereby materially increasing the population without providing for new bridges and wider roads is setting new standards of urban planning by totally ignoring the consequences.

Cranky Lizard may be wrong and has missed the point, but, apart from some Federal funding as a result of the recent By- Election in Longman, financial commitment to the Bribie region is obviously lacking.

So, if Cranky Lizard is wrong and there is plenty of infrastructure planning taking place in this region, supported by credible evidence make a noise, tell Cranky Lizard to get some proper research together.

There you go. There is a challenge for you all.

Think about who you vote for, folks, remember what power you are handing to them. Voting in our system of democracy is an exclusive right, a right for which men and women of this Nation have fought and died for, do not squander this privilege.

Now, some other bloody things….

Cranky Lizard observes that the practice of driving on the wonderful beaches on the ocean side of Bribie Island is becoming rather crowded these days. The hoon brigade have been let loose, ripping along the sand tracks in the National Park in tricked-up Nissans, Tojos, Pajeros and Mazdas.

Island wildlife is being crushed beneath the spinning wheels, sensitive tracks and growth zones are being torn apart by large, aggressive sand track tyres and, in some cases, small intellects along for the ride.

Cranky Lizard suggests that the beaches and entrance points to Fraser Island have become so overrun with assorted four-wheel hoonery, that it is easier and more attractive, for many four wheel drivers and their families, to head for Bribie Island beaches. Unfortunately, the wild-eyed adventurers of the more irresponsible members of the four-wheel drive community, and they are, by far, a small minority, have reached the same conclusion.

How many permits can be issued for driving on the beaches and in the National Parks, on one day or

for a weekend? Maybe it is time to look at that. Cranky Lizard has spoken to many residents from Banksia Beach to Woorim who have some pretty ordinary tales to tell about Sunday afternoons watching the ‘ mob ‘ queuing to get off the beach or taking the alternative route through the park and hitting the main roads near Banksia Beach.

Young Adults with Disability Taking Steps to Independence It can be hard for young adults with a disability to find friends, integrate into the community and live with a sense of purpose. However, by learning to be more independent, they gain a greater ability to speak up for themselves and choose the life they want. They may even increase their capacity to settle into a home and life of their own. In our experience every step they take to physical, emotional and social independence is beneficial both for them as individuals and for the community.

With appropriate support, young adults with disabilities can make significant steps towards learning daily living skills and more independence. The process may be a gradual one and may require extra effort, time and positive energy but age is certainly no barrier to learning.

Starting slowly and proceeding step by step with changes that add up to a more empowered lifestyle is the best way to go. It is helpful if young adults with disability can be encouraged to choose their own

friends because the process of doing so supports their personal growth and development and helps them get more involved with the community.

That is where services like the Learning Centre at Bribie Respite & Support Services come in.

The Bribie Respite Young Adult with Disability Support Services program is run at the Learning Centre by highly skilled staff and volunteers for people with physical and intellectual disabilities. We offer practical assistance in developing self-care skills such as personal hygiene, cooking, cleaning and house hold skills such cleaning and laundry, social skills, practical maths and money management, travel training and road safety, and dance, drama and sports for confidence and coordination enhancement. From this November we will also offer overnight respite camps.

We aim to create a safe and secure environment through which young adults with disabilities are able to develop every day skills and form new friendships, gradually becoming more independent and confident along the way.

Referrals. Gold for your business With the popularity of Facebook and online forums, establishing a good referral system is essential to your business prospecting activities. Not having a referral strategy in place for your business is leaving money on the table.

Developing your strategy begins by being conscious of the power of referrals. The more expensive something is going to be, the more likely referrals are to be the deciding factor.

This does not mean that more expensive is necessarily better. Rather it means the decision is more measured when it comes to items at a higher price point. Similarly, when putting our trust in someone to handle things that are very personal to us...like our health. Or haircuts. Photographs and celebratory cakes – basically any special occasion that will not be repeated.

The two main types of referrals are: 1) Online Reviews

How often do you check the online reviews on TripAdvisor when you're in a new town? or on Facebook when you're thinking of using a business for the first time? I'm willing to bet you do that quite a lot! Am I right?

2) Personal Recommendations

When was the last time you went to a restaurant because a friend kept on raving how great the food or the service was? Asked a family member or friend to recommend a reliable plumber or electrician to take care of your dripping taps or broken fans?

I do this on a regular basis because good tradies are hard to find! Similarly, doctors, dentists, electricians, accountants and a myriad of other professionals.

As regular readers of this column know, I’m new to Bribie Island. I've found a hairdresser, a masseur, a photographer as well as my airconditioning installer and electrician all through referrals.

Most of these referrals came from online recommendations in a local community group Facebook page. Now we all know just because it’s on Facebook does not mean it’s true! So it’s important to do your own due diligence and not just believe everything you read. One of my favourite ways of doing this is by checking out the profiles of the reviewers and of the business owners; they can be very revealing!

If you're in business your online profile deserves your attention because you never know when you'll be 'snooped' by a potential client.

Competition is tough so referral strategies need to have a key place in your business to help you stand out from the crowd. Even more so now that there is so much happening out there in the social media landscape. Tapping into that landscape is GOLD. Having a referral strategy brings your business 4 key benefits:

1 ) Customer acquisition costs are minimal.

Your happy customers are doing the marketing for you. Of course, this only happens if you give good service and are attentive to your customers' needs.

2) Customer retention rate is higher.

If you give them a chance to talk to you, they will start using tricks in their scammers’ toolbox to convince you to part with your money.

Scammer’s tools can involve the following: • Scammers spin elaborate, yet convincing stories to get what they want.

• They use your personal details to make you believe you have dealt with them before and make the scam appear legitimate.

• Scammers may contact you regularly to build trust and convince you that they are your friend, partner or romantic interest.

• They play with your emotions by using the excitement of a win, the promise of everlasting love, sympathy for an unfortunate accident, guilt about not helping or anxiety and fear of arrest or a fine.

• Scammers love to create a sense of urgency, so you don’t have time to think things through and react on emotions rather than logic.

• Similarly, they use high pressure sales tactics saying it is a limited offer, prices will rise, or the market will move and the opportunity will be lost.

• A scam can have all the hallmarks of a real business using glossy brochures with technical industry jargon backed up with office fronts, call centres and professional websites.

• With access to the internet and clever software it is easy for scammers to create

so much going on out there in "internet land." It makes getting your message to stand out from the crowd difficult.

Who better to recommend and refer you than happy clients/customers?

Remember, we value the advice and recommendations of our friends.

4) Conversion rates are generally higher. A prospect introduced to your business by someone they trust is far more likely to convert into a new client/ customer for you.

The old adage that an unhappy customer will tell everyone and a happy customer usually won't say anything much is definitely true.

What this boils down to is this... communication.

If you haven’t got a referral system in place, it’s not too late to start! You’ll be surprised at how easy it really is once you are open to creating and maximising the opportunities.

The scammer’s tools are designed to get you to lower your defences, build trust in the story and act quickly or irrationally and proceed to the final stage—sending the money.

Sending the money Sometimes the biggest clue you will have that it is a scam is the way the scammer asks you to pay.

Asking for money can come within minutes of the scam or after months of careful grooming. Scammers have their preferences for how you send your money.

Scammers have been known to direct victims to their nearest money remittance location (post office, wire transfer service or even the bank) to send money. They have been known to stay on the phone, give specific instructions and may even send a taxi to help with this. Scammers are willing to accept money by any means and this can include direct bank transfers, preloaded debit cards, gift cards, iTunes cards or virtual currency such as Bitcoin. Any request for payment by an unusual method is a tell-tale sign that it is part of a scam.

Credit cards usually offer some protection and you should also look for secure payment options where ‘https’ appears in the web address and the site has a closed padlock symbol.

Don’t send money to someone you have only met online or over the phoneespecially if they are overseas.

Be aware that scammers can also ask for payment in the form of valuable goods and expensive gifts such as jewellery or electronics. Paying money to scammers isn’t the only thing you should worry about—if you help transfer money for a stranger you may unwittingly be involved in illegal money laundering activities.

Retirement In The Bribie Island Region – Choices Are Numerous!

Decisions towards an appropriate aged care residence can be complicated and stressful. Being informed simplifies this stage in life with understanding how the process operates, available opportunities and what you personally prefer.

Consider your right level of aged care living with these hints:

1. Assessing Government eligibility for support - you will need to be assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT), or Aged Care Assessment Services (ACAS) 1800 200 422.

Assessment is funded by the Australian Government, completed by a team of health professionals who provide information, advice and assistance to mature aged with difficulty living at home.

2. Finding an aged care residence Once assessed the search begins! It is vital to understand what type of care you require and their services. There are various levels - high and low-level care, as well as extra services, dementiaspecific care and respite care. These broad service offerings can also enable 'ageing in place', so if you change, you can still remain there.

3. The costs - Australian Government assists with cost of care via funding, with those who can afford to do so. Four payment options for residential aged care:

A. Basic Daily Fee (Government Standard Fee) - contribution towards daily living expenses, for example meals, laundry and cleaning. All residents pay a standard Basic Daily Fee, is reviewed every March and September in line with Centrelink increases in the Aged Pension.

4. Process to apply

When there are vacancies you can apply to as many properties as you desire. Definitely visit a variety of locations before deciding. Consider the programmes provided, staff, the premises surroundings and if you truly feel content.

Innovation for the aged

Bolton Clarke has won further recognition for aged care innovation, this time for wearable technology to tackle social isolation and loneliness.

The wearable CaT Pin (Conversation as Therapy pin), which uses number of words spoken in a day as a measure for social isolation, has won the $10,000 Designing for Ageing Well Challenge, co-sponsored by Telstra and RMIT to reward innovative thinking in design for Australia’s ageing community.

The next step after trials will be mass customisation to be able to produce a considerable number of the low cost wearable pins.

This involves modelling each pin on an individual client’s personal artefact's and items such as medals, lace or jewellery, creating an item the client feels comfortable to wear and use.

QR Codes are so useful for the Retired and the Aged

QR Codes make browsing the internet, sending e mails even SMSing so easy on your hand held devices!

Now that you’ve been seeing these QR codes all over the place, and have just been learning all about how awesome QR codes are, are you excited to start using them yourself? But have you noticed something about all those codes you’ve been seeing? Yup, that’s right.

They barely ever have an explanation of how to use them! So, are you wondering how?

Well, it’s actually pretty easy…but you have to have the right tools. To use QR codes conveniently you must have a smartphone equipped with a camera and a QR code reader/scanner application feature. Luckily, the newer smartphones models available today often have an app pre-installed on them.

However, don’t start breaking out into a sweat yet if you aren’t lucky enough to have that work done for you, it’s nothing a quick push of a button can fix. All you have to do is visit your phone’s app store (examples include the Android Market, Apple App Store, BlackBerry App World, etc.) and download a QR code reader/scanner app.

So, now that you have the tools you need, let’s get to scanning. Go out and find yourself a code. Get out your phone and open the app you’ve downloaded or that it came with. Do your best to steady

Consider this for an elderly person that has difficulty with tremors or who find the keypads too small, or just finds the typing in of e mail addresses and website names tedious.

An address book of regularly used sms numbers, emergency numbers, e mail addresses and website links can be created very easily for an elderly person.

This means if they want to send their daughter an emergency sms the address book would have a large QR code that says, Jane's Phone, The elderly person opens up her camera places it over the Qr Code and the mobile immediately links her to the messaging platform and can quickly type in help and sends.

Other uses could be for dementure patients for example where a bracelet or wearable QR code is attached to the patient. If for any reason this aged person is placed in any danger the QR code can reveal this persons full identity and contact numbers.

To send an e mail is simple too, by scanning/ holding the camera over a regularly used mail address QR Code will direct the user to the e mail browser application with the e mail address inserted and ready for the message.

With a host of students signing up in a few short weeks, U3A Beachmere started it’s inaugural Term with an amazingly diverse range of classes and workshops, from computer and smart phone to meditation and yoga, lots of languages, crafts, skills, sports and the ever popular ukulele.

Some other statistics that support this truly wonderful community endeavour: over 200 members enjoying 25 classes taught by 15 tutors and supported by over 40 volunteers.

U3A Beachmere has started with a groundswell that has locals talking in the street, at the shops and over coffee.

The premise is to promote healthy ageing by sharing educational, creative and leisure activities provided by its own members. It fosters a friendly, stress free environment to learn and socialise.

I HATE BEING SQUISHY….

BUT I’M COMFORTABLE!

Our Comfort Zone, it’s a place where we can chug along all day every day without stress, hardship, challenges and tests. You feel safe, it’s like wearing your favourite snuggly marshmellowy-sink-into sofa cushions continuously around you.

Sure being in your comfort zone means you are never faced with uncomfortable situations, but, when it comes to exercise, if you stay in your comfort zone for too long that is exactly what happens to you.

One day you wake up to discover your body has become the size of your sofa and your comfort zone is so big you can’t see your feet and you end up going for walks in small circles making no progress at all, suddenly you are feeling uncomfortable!

“But my comfort zone IS COMFORTABLE” I hear you say (in a slightly annoying whingy voice).

Well that’s great until your doctor tells you that your life expectancy is now 10 years shorter and your heart is struggling to pump. Then you suddenly realise that your knees ache every day whether you are sitting or standing, and walking around doing the grocery shop is now a painful experience and what’s with your favourite stretchy comfort pants? Where has the stretchy comfortable bit gone???

Even people who exercise every day can have this happen. We have lots of people come to us and say “But I walk or cycle everyday” or they swim or dance two or three times a week. Yet they are noticing that their slightly wobbly middle is now becoming their increasing wobbly whole body. Firm bottoms are slowly drooping towards the floor and arms won’t stop waving when you want them to.

This happens when your body is in a comfort zone. Yes you are exercising but the trouble is if you don’t change your exercises around or increase the resistance, distance or time, eventually this becomes a new comfort zone.

When I tell clients that most days some part of my body is a bit achy from working out, they tend to look at me in disbelief. They think that because I train with heavy weights that my body should be used to it, and yes it would be if I didn’t continuously change my workouts, or increase the weights I lift or, as in the case of the 35km walk we did, I suddenly add a whole new element to my training. Then just like someone who has never lifted weights before, my body is out of its comfort zone and so my muscles let me know about it for a couple of days.

Changing your exercising around keeps it interesting and fun. If your only exercise is walking then you can easily add some resistance work into your day with “drink bottle weights” or body weight exercises. And yes you will find that when you do something new your muscles will tell you about it over the next couple of days but you should never be so sore that you can’t move!

One of my all-time pet hates is trainers who think they have to flog you into a sweaty grovelling mess to prove how good they are, which really just proves they aren’t that good at all. I have had clients come to me terrified of Personal Trainers because they once went to a trainer who had them so sore they couldn’t walk for 5 days. Workouts

Senior Gentle Strengthening Exercises

Before You Start – You need to Hit the BOTTLE!

One of the best and cheapest “hand weights” you can get is a 500ml bottle of water. Many people have difficulty holding a hard object such as a dumbbell, not because it is heavy but because they are “hard” to hold them securely if you have arthritis. Hand weights can also be expensive. Once opened a 500ml bottle of water is quite soft to hold and the weight of the bottle can also be adjusted to suit your current strength. A full 500ml bottle of water weighs 500grms (1/2kg) If you find this is too heavy then just have a drink and it will weigh less. As your strength increases you can increase the water or add a little sand to increase the weight. Use a stable chair to sit in, wear flat bottomed shoes so when you stand up you will be balanced.

If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these exercises stop! Start slowly with each exercise and give your body time to adjust to doing something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Really! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body.

Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are the type of gentle strength exercise we do in our Heartmoves classes, except we use resistance bands instead of weights or water bottles. If you have a resistance band or tube you can use that instead of the water bottle. Take each exercise slowly and carefully. Remember, strength training is a great way to increase bone density. Strong muscles will help with your balance and mobility but do need to be done regularly. Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will give you improvement in strength over time. So use your chair put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

Wall Push Up

Stand at just a little bit close than arms-length from wall Place hands on wall at chest height, stand with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Lower your body so your nose almost touches the wall, hold for count “one and two” Slowly push away from the wall until you are almost back at arms-length then repeat slowly, only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest.

Chair Shoulder Side Raise

Use a stable chair that is not too soft or low. Hold your water bottles gently – do not grip too tightly as your hands may become sore or cramp Keep your elbows slightly bent and gently raise your arms out to the sides Only lift as high as is comfortable for your shoulders Do not lift above your shoulder height Repeat slowly, only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest.

Seated Bicep Curls

Use a stable chair that is not too soft or low Hold water bottles gently – do not grip too tightly as your hands may become sore or cramp Start with arms down and hands by the side of your chair Keep your elbows tucked in tight and your upper arm does not move. Bring your hand with the bottle up to your shoulder and then lower back down slowly Repeat slowly only do as many “curls” as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

Seated Chest Fly

Use a stable chair that is not too soft or low Start by doing this exercise without the water bottles if you find this easy you can then see if you can comfortably hold the bottles while performing the exercise. Bring elbows up to as close to shoulder height as you comfortably can with your arms at 90o Keep your arms up and slowly bring your elbows together and hold for the count “one and two” Repeat slowly only do as many “closes” as you feel comfortable doing up to 10.

We chose Circuit Classes for many reasons. Firstly because a circuit class is perfect for keeping your exercises fresh and your body and cardio progressing.

It also meant that we could have small classes so that our clients are constantly being supervised and corrected if they are not doing the exercise correctly, and of course the classes are resistance based.

Disturbing reports of an injured elderly 88 year old Bribie Island local being told

Studies show that an active social life can improve and extend the lives of seniors, improve their health and even assist in avoiding Alzheimer’s disease.

While many publications and studies are vocal about the need to stay active in retirement, not so many are promoting the virtues of social activity in our later years, something that recently has been shown to improve many aspects of our lives, and in fact extend them beyond expectations. Probus is a social group for retirees with over 130,000 members throughout Australia and New Zealand, and its Chairman, Douglas Geekie, says that studies show there are at least five good reasons to maintain a good social life through joining a social club and interacting with other like-minded people on a regular basis. • • •

HISTORY AND MAGIC AT THE TIP OF SCOTLAND

St Magnus Catherdral Following in the vain of the unusual and off the beaten path travels, I would like to introduce you to the Orkney Islands and in particular Kirkwall. With a scattered population of just over 9000, it is easy to fall in love with both the town and the history. With two main avenues to reach Kirkwall, either by ferry from the mainland or on a cruise ship, you can decide the length of your stay and just how much you wish to experience the life of the Orkney people. At times it feels like you have stepped right onto a movie set at the BBC –‘The Orkney Vet’.

The feeling is similar to that of travelling to the set of Doc Martin in Port Isaac Cornwall- with the steep hills instead replaced with acres and acres of rolling green pasture dotted with think fleeced sheep casually grazing in the wind swept fields.

At the centre of town is the red earth coloured St Magnus- Britain’s most northerly Cathedral. Construction began in 1137 and was commissioned by the Norse Earl Rognvald. Kirkwall began its history with strong links to Scandinavia and with the original name ‘Kirkjuvagr’.

A fishing and market town in the 9th century it became the centre of trade and linked Iceland Shetland and Argy to Scandinavia. As you walk through the

cemetery reading ancient headstones, it doesn’t take long to realise that you are in some way becoming part of history. And so life went on until 1468 when James III ‘acquired’ Orkney for Scotland. The ruins of the Bishops and Earls Palaces crouch silently beneath a large canopy of trees throwing shadows on the courtyard and possibly whispering stories of a colourful and ornate past.

A little further around the Bay at Stromness a majestic stone homestead is surrounded by the remains of nine Neolithic houses overlooking the Bay of Skaill. The Neolithic ground was occupied from around 3180 to 2500 BC. Known collectively as Skara Brae, the UNESCO site is older than Stonehenge and the pyramids of Egypt with records dating back to around 5000 years ago.

Skaill House was built as a manor house in 1620 by Bishop George Graham. It was the 7th Laird William Watt who discovered the prehistoric site in 1850. Amongst the many paintings and memorabilia in the home is one of Captain Cook’s dinner services. There is a falconry not far from the homestead and some of the healthiest cattle I have ever seen. *Note that during the months of October to April the site is closed

due to the high winds and sub-zero temperatures. We visited in June which was still a little on the chilly side.

Skara Brae is not overshadowed but complemented by the likes of Maeshowe – a Neolithic cairn (burial site) dating back to around 2800 BC. The entry aligns with the setting of the mid-winter sun which directly shines into the main chamber illuminating the altar. The landscape is dotted with similar ‘green mounds’ and it is estimated that there are hundreds that as yet have not been found. Unstan Cairn- named for the region- is small but concealed a unique style of pottery that was well preserved by the earth that had grown over the main entrance.

The Ring of Brodgar creates a sense of wonder as the upright stones built in a true circle between 2500 and 2000 BC depicts an ancient ceremonial ground. The uprights are smaller than the megaliths of the Stones of Stenness. The Brodgar Circle is the third largest in the British Isles was part of an enormous prehistoric ritual complex that incorporated the Stones o' Stenness, approximately one mile to the south-east and probably the Ring of Bookan to the north-west. I grew up with the consequences of war. My grandfather died in Shrapnel Valley, Gallipoli in 1915, when my father was only 8 months old. My father was a war hero fighting in every major conflict in WW11. He was a Rat of Tobruk and won the Military Cross in the New Guinea Campaign. However, from this background of war, I learned the importance of peace. When friends encouraged their sons into a Defence Service career, I told them I was raising a peace maker.

When I joined Rotary in 2014, I was so impressed that peace and conflict resolution was one of their main "causes". In fact, this cause is so important to Rotary that the month of February is devoted to it. What a fitting time to recognise and promote peace - we have just celebrated Christmas - a time of peace and good will. Through service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, Rotary members are taking action to address the underlying reasons for conflict. Can any of us really remember a time when somewhere in the world there has not been conflict of some type.

Each year, Rotary pays for 100 of the world's most dedicated and brightest professionals to study at Rotary Peace Centres. Through training, study, and practice, Rotary Peace Fellows become leaders and catalysts for peace and conflict resolution. Many go on

At the time of writing this article, Raina was in the offices of the United Nations Development Program in Amman, Jordan, completing an internship, which is part of her Masters degree.

Raina has written from Amman to say she is working with an "innovation lens" which is new to her, but said she "is coming to realise why it is so important both for the field of international development and for the Arab region in particular. In relation to the former, much of development and peace work has historically gone badly but we keep

The institute is a World think tank that aims to create a shift in the way the world thinks about peace. They use data-driven research to show that peace is a positive, tangible and achievable measure of human wellbeing and development. Perhaps the old adage - if we don't learn from history we will keep repeating it - isn't too far off the mark.

It is an honour and a privilege to know these young "peace makers" and I wish them well in their peace endeavours.

I salute our President, John Oxenford, who always volunteers to be host and counsellor for each Peace Fellow assigned to our Club.

Peace is not something that comes easily, it must be worked for, at many levels. And, like many good things, must be introduced to us when we are young and learning. As Mahatma Gandhi said - “If we are to reach real peace in this world… we shall have to begin with children.”

Dr Le Ray said patients would require a referral from their GP to the Caboolture General Surgery Service which identified the patient was for the chronic wound service.

“Referrals will be accepted for patients who have a chronic, non-healing wound of more than six months and which is not responding to current treatment, such as a lower limb ulcer,” Dr Le Ray said.

“Referrals will undergo a triage process by a multidisciplinary team so referrals should include all relevant history and treatments tried so far.”

The tradition is still going with a group of neighbours from Allamanda Drive and Azalea Ave gather together in their 26th year for Australia’s Day Breakfast.

Approximately 35 neighbours still sit under the Fig Tree and enjoy a cooked breaky and lots of laugh’s. There were some new neighbours this year who join the tradition. Neighbours made Sayo’s with butter and cheese and lamingtons. YUM!

Keeping your smoke alarms compliant

There’s no doubt about it, smoke alarms save lives – but only the ones that work!

Which is why ensuring your property has working, compliant smoke alarms is so important.

It is a legal requirement, in all state and territories, that home owners and landlords install working smoke alarms in their property, with recommendations made that alarm systems be upgraded to hard-wired interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. Specific requirement and regulations may differ from state to state, but all smoke alarms installed must meet minimum standards as per the Australian Standards – AS 3786 (residential smoke alarms).

Smoke alarms should:

- Be cleaned and checked regularly.

- Be replaced every ten years.

- It is recommended that systems be upgraded to photoelectric alarms.

As your property manager, checking the safety of your property is a vital part of our responsibility. Not only are we looking after your property, but also the safety of the tenants who live there.

We will ensure that alarms are tested, cleaned and working correctly.

It is a legal requirement that damaged or broken alarms be replaced within 30 days prior to the start or renewal of a tenancy agreement. We also advise tenants to regularly check alarms and advise us directly of any concerns they may have.

While cleaning and battery changes to alarms can be done by anyone, installation of alarm system must be completed by a suitably qualified professional.

If you have any questions or concerns about upgrading your property’s smoke alarms speak to your property manager.

Your state or territory’s government website should provide details on its regulations, and check with your property manager if you have any concerns. There are private companies that can also assist with regulatory guidelines as well as carrying out smoke alarm installation.

If you own an investment property in Queensland you have until January 1, 2022 to ensure your property is compliant with the new regulations. So what exactly the changes include?

For Queensland:

- Property must have photoelectric-type smoke alarms on every storey.

- Alarms must be located in every bedroom, hallways/space connecting bedrooms to the rest of the dwelling, and in living spaces (such as lounge rooms).

- They should be hard-wired to 240V mains power supply with back up battery, or by a non-removable ten-year battery - Systems need to be interconnected.

If this is not possible they need to be wirelessly connected.

While 2022 may still seem a way off, keep in mind the demand for upgrading systems will intensify closer to this deadline.

Dragons Abreast will allocate their grant money towards a number of hi-vis ocean racing jackets. With success in their application for funding, the Endeavour Foundation is able to add a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to its suite of resources that support participants with learning difficulties. The Bribie Lions will be able to continue their fantastic fundraising work in our community with the purchase of new gazebos, a BBQ table and chairs.

The Ningi Community Hall plans to upgrade their Crafty Shed to provide better service to participants and the local community. Access to Stronger Communities funding will enable them to fit the building out with better lighting, a new TV and data connection points.

A new disability toilet, tables and chairs, air conditioning and glass doors will be included as part of QCWA’s plans to refurbish their building thanks to their approved Stronger Communities funding.

Building on their commitment to participant safety and overall regulatory compliance, CSG plans to upgrade the electrical system in the scout den. New safety switches, LED lighting, flood lights and repairs to their meter box will be included as part of the upgrades.

Spiders Boxing Club (SBC)

SBC will soon be able to transport young boxers to and from tournaments, with plans to use their Stronger Communities funding to purchase a vehicle. The new vehicle will eradicate any barriers to participation by providing transport to children and families experiencing disadvantage.

St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies) - Bribie Island

Vinnies Bribie Island will allocate their Stronger Communities grant money to the fit-out of their Bribie store. The fit-out will include fixed sorting tables, suitable storage facilities for donated good and fixed benches for volunteers to use while sorting through donations. This project will improve the functionality of the store for both customers and volunteers.

Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) – Bribie Island

Once again, VRM has been successful in their pitch to the Committee for Stronger Communities funding. Handheld radio sets will be purchased, which will allow their volunteers to communicate with each other when facilitating community events.

With the Committee approving their application for funding, the Cricket Club plans to install a shelter and lighting around their outdoor three-bay cricket nets. With improved facilities, the Cricket Club will be able to provide a better experience for participants and spectators.

Soils ain’t Soils

Sometimes it’s a challenge to keep ourselves hydrated and motivated to work in the garden in these hot dry summer months. Just this week I was planting plants in temps around the low thirties and the plants I was planting needed extreme care indeed. At one stage as I was caring for my plants, I realised that I was sweating so much, that I could have given them salt burn from my excessive perspiration or worse, perhaps alcohol poisoning, as I was working immediately after the Australia Day long weekend- of course! Poor little blighters.

Preparing the planting holes by adding water to the plants and the holes before planting is paramount, but there are so many implications that may impede this simple little process. The hose is on standby, and at my side ready and primed, but I need to run the boiling water from the hose as it has been sitting exposed to the full hot sun and decant this into a bucket until cool water flowsbefore adding it to the root zone. This can be laborious and repetitive due to the fact that every 5 minutes the hose is hot again and one has to be alert, as to let the boiling water out of the hose each and every time. Also, the plants sitting in full sun waiting to be planted need to be hydrated- before placement, to cool their roots and to alleviate any extra stress that could set them back.

The soil excavated from the hole also heats up and this can injure the delicate plant roots when backfilling if not dampened also.

Once the soil is moist and the plants hydrated, I then add a mulch layer that will allow moisture to percolate through unimpeded, this also assists to protect the plants root system from drying out and promote their growth.

Often on these hot days there is also drying winds which can dry the new growing tips of some tender plants if the plants are not sufficiently hydrated and if these precautionary planting procedures are not adhered to, the result could be a plant that has dropped all its leaves in protest or perhaps dies. There are products available called anti-transpirants; that can be sprayed on to the foliage before planting that will minimise excessive moisture loss from the stomata openings on the leaves.

These work by temporarily blocking the stomata so the plants remain turgid and hydrated and is useful when planting out in hot windy days and stops unnecessary transpiration.

I personally do not apply fertiliser around the top of the plants root system area upon planting in these hot dry conditions as these can rapidly breakdown once the soil temperatures reach 25 degrees Celsius and leach excessive salts around the plants root system which tend to force unnatural growth at the expense of the developing root system. Also, when using tonics like seaweed, these work best after the plants hydrated first, and then applied secondly, to reap the maximum benefits from the seaweed’s natural growth regulators and stimulants. I also mentioned how soil wetters can be beneficial for hydrophobic soils in my adjacent article titled “lawns green with envy”, but there are other types of wetting agents available on the market (humectants); which actually attracts the available soil moisture from the air around the pore spaces, then creates microscopic droplets that plant roots can use during these drought times. These are proving popular in times like these, but when it comes down do dealing with sandy soils its best to build up the organic layer first. Well, all this talk on hydration is making me thirsty indeed. Stay cool!

Wrightia antidysenterica- ‘Coral swirl’ is a beautiful ornamental flowering, semideciduous perennial that loves growing in the subtropics, its origins hail from Sri Lanka. It grows to 1 to 2 metres tall with a spread of 1.5 metres and produces masses of flowers from spring to autumn. The flowers are fragrant, and star shaped with 5 petals that are vivid white in colour and have a white lacy- frilly corolla with a yellow stamen centre. They are semi deciduous in the coldest of winters but when growing in the subtropics tend to be mostly evergreen and free flowering throughout the year. They like well drained loamy soil that is slightly acidic and grow well in full sun to part shade but do best protected from salt winds. Wrightia antidysenterica gets its name from the botanist William Wright and the Latin name antidysenterica; pertaining to its medical qualities for anti- dysentery- and is well known in Ayurvedic medicine studies and is called "kuţaja" in Sanskrit.

Lawns green with Envy While most lawns around the district are suffering from heat stress due to the current drought conditions that’s is affecting us this summer, there is still some beautifully hydrated green swards around that really demonstrate the commitment of some die-hard lawn enthusiasts out there. The irrigation needed to keep these lawns in tip top shape has to be applied regularly with the aim to thoroughly saturate the root zone with deep long watering cycles to assist in recovery from these dry hot summer days. It’s very difficult if you are relying on tank water or mains supply only, and one has to question the sustainability factor when faced with growing plants, food or lawns and paying the price for our water, but those who have a good source of bore water with a low salt concentration are advantaged indeed- in these conditions. On Bribie Island and surrounding districts, a lot of our topsoils are very sandy in structure which will not hold moisture for long, so regular watering is the key to keeping these lawns looking green and healthy, but the downfall is, the water disappears as quick as its applied as it percolates through the sandy soil profile.

You may of noticed that you have a lot of dead looking areas in your turf that standout predominantly before your next irrigation cycle as the soil dries out, and this can be confused with lawn grub damage sometimes, but may possibly be dry patch, which is when the soil surface has become hydrophobic (will not accept water) over time, and if that is the case, you can check this out by getting a watering can and shower a stream of water on the dry patch areas of concern to see if the water just pools in these areas and not infiltrate the topsoil, if its dry patch, then it might need a few applications of a soil wetter. (liquid detergent that breaks down the fine waxy coating which makes the soils hard to wet).

Its all about the timing!

With hydrophobic soils, there is a bit of a timing strategy that works for me, and as I am very busy working in my landscape gardening business, I do not have a lot of spare time to spend on my lawn as I would like, so when I cut my grass, I cut it slightly higher in the drought times and then irrigate immediately with a long deep soaking so it reduces stress and promotes good growth which in turn aids in its recovery, this process just sustains the lawn until its time for the next lawn cutting schedule and if there is dry patch, I scratch the dead grass (dethatch) with a rake first to clear the area before mowing and then apply the soil wetter the following day after the lawn cutting and irrigation, and this can be applied on these areas of concern- and in fact, the whole lawn if desired then thoroughly irrigate once again to really wet the soil. Sometimes these dead patches can be caused by old feeding of black beetle larvae which have been and gone as they do prefer the dryer soils when feeding but in regards to lawn grubs, they absolutely love the lush and healthy lawns to feed on, and are generally more of a problem in the rainy seasons but they will flourish and feed on well irrigated and manicured lawns that have been dutifully cared for over time. I personally prefer not to use insecticides on my lawns and opt for the repair with well- timed irrigation and lawn mowing strategies to alleviate adding extra stress to my patch as the excessive heat in a dry summer is surely stress enough. So then, may your lawn live long and prosper and don’t forget, keep your mower blades sharp; so you cut it- not bruise it!

Community outraged, offended or walk jerkily around the room seething with uncontrolled anger at the next assumption of mine. As you read this, you will see that I am expressing an opinion – not delivering a fact!

And, there has always been, on the fringe of our communities, citizens who just do not conform to the norms of our world. Citizens who, for whatever their reasons, are unable or unwilling to adjust to the way in which the majority of our people live. These are not bad citizens. These are not unworthy citizens.

Many of them produce beautiful artistic compilations – music, sculptures, paintings and buildings.

Now there is no need for anyone to become

I have written of this in the previous edition of this newspaper.

More likely than not, it will be these people who will use and experiment with alcohol and mind-altering drugs as a part of their desire to push boundaries, challenge the norms and forge their specific way along their life’s journey. Good luck to them!

Broadly speaking they do no harm and leave us with their legacies of how they lived their challenging lives and their splendid longlasting artistic endeavours.

After that publication, more attention has been focused on this matter with more deaths and collapses at mass music festivals and the growing pressure from some medical and community health groups to institute ‘ illicit pill testing ‘ facilities at these venues so that people intending to consume these poisons can find out what is in them.

Our community develops and evolves regularly; it is dynamic which is good for us all. Why? Well, if we had not changed from our previous standards, we would still be drowning witches and pelting poor buggers in the marketplaces with dodgy vegetables.

And, I also outlined the broad detail of the ‘ pill testing ‘ procedures; a system which, if viewed objectively, is well planned and well executed. It is a system which does not embrace the use of drugs/pills/smoke etc.

The method in place, as I understand it, deliberately mitigates against the use of these substances.

In the last decade, however, a dark shadow has been dogging our tracks as we move along our journey. Mind-altering, chemically manufactured drugs, in the form of pills, have flooded into our communities – mostly into the venues frequented by our young people, nightclubs, music festivals and various other places where young people gather. I am referring to an age group of say, 18 years of age to 35 years of age, with a specific focus on those who are progressing through their twenties!

As a general rule, we live our lives, in a democracy, according to the laws of the land, the common sense of the community in determining what is, or is not, morally acceptable to the majority of our citizens and the economic laws of supply and demand, which are the market forces which define the price, or the cost, of the items, goods and chattels which we need for daily living.

Once again, no need for alarm, this is not a general condemnation of all twenty-yearolds. A calm assessment of the obvious will establish that it is this age group which frequents the venues mentioned above, and, in particular, make up the majority of those who attend the mass, outdoor music festivals.

So, we shall focus on these festivals.

As we focus we are aware that these mindaltering substances, appearing as illicit drugs in the form of pills have been declared illegal in our society – to possess them, to sell them to others and to drive with them in your system is prohibited by law – laws which have been legislated in our Federal and State Parliaments.

These laws have broad-based general support in our communities, and our Police Forces strictly enforce them because these drugs/pills are dangerous, causing physical distress and death.

We all know, and I don’t have to detail, that it is these mass music venues which have become the focus of media attention in recent times with the drug-induced deaths and

So, the matter remains one of public discussion.

It is the very existence of these facilities, not the systems they use, which creates the problem.

I wonder why we do not ask the question why? Why is it, that those young people, who are generally not fools, I mean they would not intentionally drink weed killer, are drawn to consume this poisonous rubbish in such numbers, what is it that attracts them?

I am aware of the idea that “ it makes them feel better “, but does it? I don’t know because I have never taken one, but knowing the dangers of addiction and health threats why put the bloody things into your body?

I also know that this is a dumb question because there is no sensible answer. They take them because they want to and because they can! And it appears as if no public education program is going to make any difference. They are just going to keep on taking them, despite the risks, despite public health, despite the sheer bloody irresponsible stupidity of their actions.

There is, publicly available, much sensible material about why young people take drugs, and I am not going to explore that aspect of this discussion any further.

But I will comment upon the effects of the media and social campaign to introduce ‘ pill testing ‘ at the large festival venues.

Firstly, the latest death and ‘ incidents ‘ occurred at a festival [ odd description for a noisy piss up! ] in New South Wales. From media reports, which were corroborated by

medical eyewitnesses, drug pushers inside the venues were claiming that their brand of drug poison had been “ medically tested as safe “.

Where there is demand, there will be supply as sure as guns are iron. So, we see market forces applying in this trade of poisonous rubbish. The dealers quickly latched onto the idea of ‘ medical testing ‘ thus encouraging people to buy and consume because their poison was safe.

In my opinion, logic points quite clearly to the fact that the ‘ pill testing ‘ idea has been grasped by the drug dealers and used to promote their products, thus encouraging the use of illicit drugs.

Secondly, all Police Commissioners in Australia have roundly condemned the idea of ‘ pill testing‘. Their reasons for doing so are apparent; these are the men and women responsible for the enforcement of the laws of the land and the existence of ‘ pill testing ‘ facilities at these festivals gives tacit approval to the possession and consumption of illicit drugs.

And like it or not – that is the perception of most people, a perception that becomes a reality in the minds of young people.

“ The Govt. has established pill testing centres; therefore it is OK to take these drugs “.

In my opinion, the establishment of ‘ pill testing ‘ facilities at these venues makes the task of the Police immeasurably more difficult, not too mention the medical staff, ambulances and social workers involved in cleaning up the medical mess.

Thirdly, and I mentioned this before as well.

Why the music venues? Why not all the other places where this poison is consumed, nightclubs, beach parties, regular alcohol venues, I mean the logic can be extended to equipping each Police Patrol vehicle with a spectrometer for mobile drug testing!!

Which logic, of course, is ridiculous.

Therefore, in my opinion, the idea of ‘ pill testing ‘ at public venues is a bad idea. It places an impossible burden upon our law enforcement agencies and our front line medical staff, and it gives tacit approval, by the Government of the day, that is OK to take illicit drugs.

It is not OK to take illicit drugs;and that, is simply, that !

The first day back at the Birali Steiner School started with a beautiful Rose Ceremony where all of the new Class 1 students were welcomed into the Primary School with a rose presented by the older children. Our Prep and Preprep Class gathered for a morning play and morning tea together with parents with everybody getting to know each other. The children soon found the sand pit and play equipment and enjoyed a story before heading home. Our first high schoolers, year 7, were happy to be back at school catching up with friends. Launching into the Middle Ages

Ambient lighting, the soft sounds of a lute and 500,000 years of history surrounded attendees at the official launch for this year’s Abbey Medieval Festival (AMF) held on Friday 1st of February.

Kicking off with a quick history, Edith Cuffe OAM, CEO of the Abbey Museum of Art & Archaeology, started with say-

the purchaser of the very first two Abbey Medieval Festival 2019 tickets, with specially signed souvenir tickets. The cutting of a celebratory cake marked the close of the official part of the launch allowing guests from far and wide to mingle and enjoy refreshments.

What many people don’t realise is that the festival is a fundraiser for the Museum. It’s a hidden gem tucked away in Caboolture with the festival being the means to fundraise and shine a spotlight on its existence. The museum houses a vast array of pieces from the Stone Age, Roman Empire, Egyptian and Japanese Feudal era to name a few.

Starting in 1989 as a simple half-day event with 30 reenactors entertaining 300 people, the Abbey Medieval Festival is now the biggest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Throughout her speech Edith highlighted the major changes to the festival accompanied by visual slides of the Festival’s growth; how they skipped hosting it in 1990 and the large showing of support in 1996 even though the weather was terrible.

In 2002 the festival became a 2-day event which, by 2010 had outgrown the grounds of St Michael’s College so moved to its current location of Abbeystowe.

In his speech Mayor for Morton Bay, Allan Sutherland, praised the dedication and passion of the volunteers and staff led by Edith saying “[the Abbey Medieval Festival] is putting Morton Bay on the map.”

I think what we look at and what we actually notice and see and appreciate in nature fits into the concept of mindfulness. Those of us who live on Bribie are fortunate. If we go out each day de-termined to see and hear the details of our surroundings, we make the most of the precious time and place we have.

Recently I have become increasingly aware that our lives are temporary. In 2017, eight people I valued were diagnosed with cancer.

Six died. Dementia is now the focus because it seems my beloved is at the beginning stages of this disease.

This month I want to write about making the most of each moment.

Bribie Island is as close to heaven as any place I know. There is so much to see. We have a habit of walking along one of the beaches each morning. What a choice!

My favourite is Red Beach with its natural timber sculptures, the patterns in the sand drawn by wind and water, the raptors that nest in the tallest trees and the abundance of shells, small sea creatures and seaweed.

We also delight in seeing the dogs on the Woorim Beach, watching some brave the waves while others timidly wait on the water’s edge. All sorts of colours, shapes and sizes—dogs and their owners too.

At the Buckley’s Hole bird hide we watch the black swans prepare for a family. After the cygnets are hatched their parents teach them to aswim, at first in the shallows then deeper water. Swal-lows that once nested in the hide each year were another example of

Sadly, these nesting niches no longer exist.

On our walks along Banksia Beach our attention is drawn to rainbow lorikeets and the crimson rosellas that compete for the best real estate in hollow trees. Magpies fill the air with their glorious songs. Water birds that have come to Bribie to rest after migrating from as far away as the Arctic fill us with awe. How could they fly so far?

I paint and my husband takes photos.

Perhaps this is why we have grown to love looking at the trunks of trees. Every tree wears its individual skin of bark, and each has its own pattern. The beautiful soft sheoak bark greets us whenever we park

I should not omit mention of the Bongaree foreshore. Cyclists, walkers (often with walking frames), families with children, small dogs on leads pulling their doting owners along—all these people making the most of a scenic, comfortable place to enjoy.

And I must not forget those fishing. And canoeing. Building sand castles, throwing balls, swimming and sunbathing. As we pass, most people smile and say hello. Older men often stop and chat with each other.

Look up and watch. The sky is forever changing. Sunsets, cloud formations, colours. Then, I sug-gest, look down and see the small things, and thank the stones, leaves

Connecting to our community

Simone Wilson MP on bus talking to a passenger On Thursday 31st of January Simone Wilson MP took a bus ride following complaints from constituents about frustrations experienced with the lack of connecting bus services.

“It was important that I see firsthand the struggles that many locals are experiencing with bus connections and that is why I jumped on the opportunity when invited along.” Simone said.

Starting at Bribie Park ‘n Ride Simone talked with people at the stop, engaging with them and asking how they found the service.

From conversations with passengers and drivers Simone formed an understanding of the issues at hand. “Locals are unable to catch a connecting bus to travel to their destination in the safest and quickest means possible. A Sandstone Point resident wishing to travel to Bongaree by bus to attend a doctor’s appointment has to endure an almost one and a half hour bus ride – that’s absurd.” She said.

The current Bus service on Bribie Island is an hourly service. Routes 641, 642 and 644 are not connecting services. They are timed to connect with route 640. However that doesn’t ensure that you’ll make your connection to the 640.

Greg Eaves, local bus driver for nine years, discussed how little changes could improve things. A few adjustments to timetables could see the buses connecting and reduce travel/wait times for passengers.

Talking about the local service after experiencing the ride Simone said “I am just as frustrated as those who rely on public transport to get around as clearly there are connectivity issues with routes that could be easily fixed by TransLink. We have a great local bus company and drivers who put the best interests of locals first. For many years they have endeavoured to coordinate the non-connecting 641, 642 and 644 routes so that passengers get the service they need.”

As Greg mentioned, during the bus ride, it isn’t enough for the drivers to bring things up, the community need to add their voices.

Simone Wilson MP intends to be one of those voices.

“When this first came to my attention I immediately wrote to TransLink asking them to change the timetable to meet the needs of my community. The response I received was less that satisfactory and I will continue to advocate for locals to receive the services they expect and deserve.” Simone stated. “Parliament resumes in February and I will be raising this with the Minister for Transport and Main Roads and I will be expecting him to take the necessary actions to fix our public transport service so it works for locals.”

TransLink Response to Simone’s enquiry – Break out box Timetables are scheduled to provide connectivity where possible however it is

not possible to connect all services at all locations without some transfer and wait times. Routes 641, 642 and 644 were designed as local routes for residents in different parts of Bribie Island to access common attractors such as the Bribie Island Shopping Centre and Bribie Island park n’ ride. These services are also scheduled to connect to route 640 services for commuters travelling to Caboolture Station, Hospital and Schools, with Route 640 services also timed to meet rail connections for passengers travelling onto Brisbane.

As a result, Routes 641, 642, and 644 are not timed to connect with each other, as they are timed to connect with Route 640

Bus operators are required to operate to schedule to meet customer expectations and minimise ongoing delays across the wider network. For these reasons, drivers cannot wait to ensure connections with non-connecting services. Depending on the departure stop and time, or preferred walking distance, passengers travelling between Sandstone and Bongaree can travel directly via route 640 services, or transfer from route 640 services to route 641 services, or from route 644 services to route 642 services. This variation in service options results in travel times ranging between 36 minutes to 1 hour and 10 minutes on average. Customers are encouraged to use TransLink's Journey Planner or the MyTransLink app to plan journeys and see the real time status of services.

We are in for a cracker of a Rugby Season in 2019 with the first Pool A World Cup Rugby Game scheduled on Friday 20th September at the Tokyo Stadium, Japan. Despite the turbulent performances of the Wallabies in 2018, the 2019 Super Rugby Season will provide a great opportunity for many new faces to position themselves for World Cup Selection. One can only hope that the Wallabies Selectors by-pass the selection of certain well-known and weathered current players for some new exciting talent. Let’s stop kidding ourselves that we need old contracted players to take to a world cup – we don’t.

Bribie Island Boat Charters

February 2019 Fishing Report

We have certainly enjoyed some great summer weather this year, a bit too much of it for great fishing. Lots of calm, sunny days; the sun has been warm and the water is, too. Almost all our winds have come from the north-east, which bring the blue-bottles in but not much else.

The fishing, over this lovely spell of good weather, has been predictably quiet.

The trick has been to know where to go and when. Look for good, deep holes and some fresh, in-coming tidal flow. Up at Whitepatch, in some of the deeper sections, there have been some big snapoffs. Keith had a good day there, trying to land something but just losing a lot of bait! There have been some trevally and snapper landed at Whitepatch over the past couple of weeks - mostly undersized but occasionally decent catches. Be aware – an undersized snapper might look a little like a bream.

If your bream is pinkish with blue spots, it is a SNAPPER and must be AT LEAST 35cm long.

Under the bridge has been a useful spot to pull up for casting a line; the shade offered by the bridge is good for the fish and fisher alike. Of course, the best time under the bridge has been at the turn of the tide; over the past few days, coming up off low-tide has seen a few hungry bream - and good sizes among them.

Pilchards have been the favoured bait for bream but prawns have been also been handy. Also hanging around the bridge, during slower tidal movement, is a type of mottled fish which has a small mouth. This is a black trevally, or happy moment, so called because of its treacherous spines, which can cause a lot of pain if you’re not careful. The happy moments are actually a lovely, placid fish that likes to move in herds, nibbling at the pylons, much nicernatured than the greedy bream; almost too nice to eat!

Jack has said that the only fish worth targeting, at the moment, are mackerel.

The bridge has been a good place to find them, too. A few days ago, with the morning low-tides, has been a great chance to go for the mackerel, with some good catches being the reward for an early start. Not for Jack though, unfortunately - he has gone back at school.

A little further out beyond the Passage, the mackerel have been schooling up and feeding on baitfish. A good bit of splashing and a few birds overhead will show you the way, then cast with a lure in amongst them, just near the edge of the action. Fish-shaped lures are the go and, usually, the shinier, the better!

Flathead are one fish that hasn’t minded the warmer weather. They do like cold mornings and a rising pressure but also enjoy high pressure and calm weather.

The only other thing needed to get them going is an incoming tide, washing over the shallows and a little breeze to stir it up. So, perfect weather lately, then, for drifting up into the creeks and casting out with a soft plastic or a piece of squid.

Most of the keeper-sized flathead have been muddies but there have also been plenty of sand flathead south of the bridge, being caught on the drift north, between the green markers.

While there may be less excitement than usual in the fishing world, there have been great sightings of dolphins, dugongs, turtles and sea-birds. A few of the crews from our boat-hire have enjoyed watching a mother and baby dugong, usually at the north end of

Whitepatch. So, there are still plenty of good reasons to get out on or beside the water.

The long-range weather forecasts promise just a few scattered days of rain over February. It’s been a long wait for our summer storms, which should be bringing south-easterly winds, cooler afternoons and some rain to cool the water a little and hopefully muddy the estuaries up a bit. When it does happen, watch out – the fish and the crabs will be jumping into the boat!

Sunshine Coast Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) officers have seized 130 crab pots from the Maroochy River during a targeted operation in January.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the operation targeted abandoned crab pots which could continue to ‘ghost fish’.

“Ghost fishing happens when lost or abandoned fishing gear continues to catch crabs, fish and other wildlife which become trapped, die and then act as bait continuing the cycle,” Mr Furner said.

“Crabbing is one of Queensland’s most popular forms of fishing however the impact of ghost fishing on the environment is a serious problem that must be addressed.

“The high number of abandoned crab pots, some of which can trap turtles, recovered by QBFP officers shows that greater care needs to be taken by fishers setting crab pots.”

Mr Furner said the proper use of fishing gear was ultimately the responsibility of fishers.

“A range of legal requirements apply to crabbing in Queensland including restrictions on fishing gear and size and possession limit,” Mr Furner said.

“For example, fishers can be fined $261

for failing to mark apparatus correctly or failing to use a prescribed float.

“People who see suspected unmarked, lost or abandoned crabbing apparatus, should record an accurate location, such as GPS coordinates, of the apparatus and report it to their closest Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol office or the FishWatch hotline on 1800 017 116.”

Mr Furner said the recent roll out of body worn cameras was helping Sunshine Coast QBFP officers with compliance operations and prosecutions.

“QBFP monitors fisheries compliance by more than 642,000 recreational fishers and 1700 commercial fishing licence holders,” Mr Furner said.

“By its nature, Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol field work can be hazardous and officers at times operate in difficult, often isolated and dynamic environments.

“It is now a workplace health and safety requirement for all Queensland fisheries officers to wear the cameras to capture video footage of inspections and interactions with the public.

“The body-worn cameras and upgraded computer servers to store the recorded data have been progressively rolled out to QBFP’s 19 bases statewide.

“The footage is stored in a secure environment and reviewed if necessary.”

Message from Simone School’s back – let’s keep our kids cool A warm welcome back to school for students returning in 2019 and a huge high five to Pumicestone’s kids starting their very first year of what will be an exciting journey ahead. My three boys have returned to high school and like every parent, I want them to receive the best education. We all know that a sweltering hot classroom is no place for learning and this is why the LNP has made a commitment to air-condition every state school classroom in Queensland. We will stand by this promise because our kids deserve it and our amazing local teachers deserve decent working conditions too.

Environment matters There is a great responsibility on us all to protect the magnificent and delicate environment that surrounds us in the Pumicestone Electorate – and most of us are dedicated to this. On 31st January I met with the Environment Minister, Leeanne Enoch to discuss a number of issues of importance. Firstly, I wanted to know what the Government is doing to better manage the Bribie Island National Park and Recreation Area from four-wheel-drive users on the beach.

More and more we are seeing visitors accessing the 4WD beach for all it has to offer, but this comes at a cost. There have been so many reports of 4WDs damaging the dunes, not obeying driving rules, campers leaving litter and risks to wildlife (including migratory birds and nesting turtles) that inhabit the area. I was very pleased to have the Minister’s ear on the need for better controls and can report that I will be consulted on a Management Plan and Visitor Strategy being developed for this area. I also ensured that environmental groups in my electorate, including BIEPA, be consulted and the Minister gave me her word this would occur.

Whilst meeting with the Minister, I raised the Containers for Change program and how we have been let down by having no refund facility in the electorate. Since raising this issue I can report that Co-Ex (the company charged to manage the container refund program) is meeting with me on 19th February to explore local options and I give you my word we will get a result.
