May I please respond to the very clear and concise letter written by Lynn Smith of Bellara concerning the public’s use of available Uber drivers and the only local taxi service.

For too long, it has generally remained an accepted fact, that there has been a monopoly existing where public transport is concerned, and local folk have not had the service of their choice to pick from on Bribie and other local areas.

I was well pleased to know now, that there is a healthy form of competition for Bribie Island and surrounds, and that those who so choose to use the good service of Uber drivers are able to do so, in the knowledge that they are not fly-by-nighters, they do have regulations to adhere to and despite the negative comments made, they are there to make a living legally just like anyone else. Intimidation is an ugly word, and equally an ugly method of promoting disharmony, equally so, domination - a trait seen to be alive and thriving. To Lynn and your fellow Uber drivers, I for one, will say, “good on ya” for having a go, your service has been long overdue.

To the older members of our community who need the use of someone else’s transport, Uber will bring you a great service. To the knockers of this world, re-adjust your judgements and learn the true meaning of helpful co-operation.

Seniors Week subsidies Seniors Week is an opportunity to celebrate the diverse contributions of older people in the Pumicestone

community, and a chance to say thank you for all that they do.

This year local community organisations and the Moreton Bay Regional Council are encouraged to apply for State Government subsidies of up to $1000 to run activities and events during Seniors Week 2016.

These grants are a great way to help fund local events and for Pumicestone organisations to show their appreciation for seniors in the community.

This year, Seniors Week will be held from 19 - 27 August with the theme ‘A Queensland for All ages’. This theme aligns with the State Government’s vision of building more age-friendly communities, where people of all ages can take part in local activities and enjoy quality of life.

The wisdom of those who have lived longer than us is invaluable to any community – whether in formal volunteering roles or in a social setting – and Seniors Week is our opportunity to celebrate that.

I urge community groups, organisations and the Moreton Bay Regional Council to consider holding an event in Pumicestone to help make this year’s celebration bigger and better than ever before. Applications close on 31 March 2017.

Safety traffic lights on Bribie Island Road

Completion of the installation of new traffic lights at the intersection of Lee and Peel roads should come as a relief to motorists who drive this stretch of road daily.

Four sets of traffic lights, to improve road safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, have been planned for Bribie Island Road as part of a $3.7 million road safety boost. Construction is currently underway on the Aylward Road intersection which are scheduled to be operational by mid-April. Further works at the Beames Road and Pinelands Way intersections will commence soon.

Priority emergency vehicle traffic signals will be installed at the Beames Road intersection activating only in the event of an emergency.

As frustrating as these road works are, these traffic lights aim to address and improve known and potential crash locations along this stretch of road. So instead of losing your cool when held up in the road works, spare a thought for those who have paved the way and lost their lives to identify these crash locations.

At that time her sons were grown and left home and her daughter was in year 12. Donna continued working during her treatment and beyond. Donna said, “I felt like a mouse continually running on a wheel and I had to get off”. In 2016 she had made up her mind. She quit her job, put her house on the market and moved back in with her parents. She wanted to travel around Australia building awareness of how life saving early detection is and somehow encourage more women to have a screening.

Many of you may have noticed the pink ‘Groovy Booby Bus’ down at Bongaree. It has a very clear message - early detection of breast cancer is the key to survival. SO, GO AND GET A SCREENING! Donna Falconer, owner of the Groovy Booby Bus, was invited to Bribie Island

by Kerri-anne Hickman to speak at the Women’s Connect lunch on March 9, to share her experience and why she is travelling around Australia creating awareness of how important breast screening is to saving lives. The story of how this testament to awareness came about is truly amazing!

Donna Falconer was a hardworking mother from Dubbo and like most mothers, juggling work and family kept her constantly busy. Donna ran the cosmetics department within Myer in Dubbo and being that person who always gives back to community, founded the ‘Look Good Feel Better’ program in 1999 – a free community service

program helping manage the appearance related side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Around the same time, she initiated the ‘Wig Library’ and it was through this charity work that she formed a relationship with the local breast care nurses.

Donna became a member of Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) and continued her charity work within her local community. In 2006 and 2008, Donna co-ordinated the placing of 100 pink silhouette cutouts, during breast cancer awareness month, through the streets of Dubbo. In May 2011 Donna founded the ‘Pink Angels Charity’ in the Dubbo region. Pink Angels’ mission is to care, help and support breast cancer patients on their journey by providing basic household services, including gardening, cleaning, delivering meals, childcare and much more.

In 2009 Donna was nominated as ‘Australian Woman of the Year’. The

The Groovy Booby Bus

awards were held in Sydney where Donna met up with her friend, the Executive Chairman of Myer. Several Sydney stores were in the process of arranging free breast screening. Knowing that one in every eight women and 150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the time they are 85, sparked an idea in Donna. This statistic meant that in her community of 45,000, 60 oblivious women had stage 2 or 3 breast cancer.

This campaign shared stories each week and encouraged others to have a breast screening. At 44 and as the key contact for the campaign, Donna thought she too should have a screening and write about it. What a shock to be diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. She became one of the 60 women affected in her small-town community. She felt well.

She was outside the age group normally associated with this disease. There was no history of breast cancer in her family.

Yet, suddenly her whole world was turned upside down. “I got a kick in the shins and I took notice of it.” Donna said.

Vandalism has unfortunately become a huge problem in our community over the years and Council does it’s best to deter this destructive behaviour.

The cost to the community is not only the huge financial cost, but also the emotional cost on individuals and communities and they can take ages to recover.

Local Government and you, its ratepayers, end up paying for acts of vandalism such as broken/

stolen signs, damaged equipment, buildings, fields and bins, not to mention the ongoing clean up of graffiti. Council employs three full-time Graffiti Officers in order to rectify graffiti across the region on a daily basis.

Here in Beachmere there has been recent break-ins and vandalism at the community Sports Club and playing fields have been vandalised several times over the last four-five months and the cost to the club and its members has been severe.

Council is looking at ways to assist the club in its fight against this ongoing problem. The damage to street lights make people feel unsafe walking in the area as well as damage to playgrounds/public toilets prevents everyone enjoying our beautiful parks and recreation areas.

If you notice any damage to buildings, parks, equipment signs etc it is important to notify the appropriate authority immediately, and don’t forget to call CRIMESTOPPERS on 1800 333 000 if you have witnessed any vandalism or destruction.

Kerbside numbering is NOT mandatory This month I would like to speak about an issue that is occuring in Division 1 at the moment.

Council may be approached from community organisations, private individuals or companies to carry out kerbside house numbering. If the organisation applies to Council for approval to undertake work within the road reserve, then written approval may be granted for markings painted on the kerb with the house numberings.

Please be aware that kerbside numbering is NOT mandatory and Council does not ‘endorse’ any private businesses and has no input into what that business may charge you to do so.

If you do NOT want the kerb numbering applied by a private business when they approach you by knocking on your door, you have the right to say no.

This is a private service/business, not a Council or Emergency Service initiative and only you can state whether you require the service to be performed or not.

Division 1 has a statistically high figure of elderly people who may feel intimidated or pressured into receiving a door to door service. Like any other business, they are subject to the rules of Australian Consumer Law including certain hours and procedures they must follow.

It is also worth noting that Council does not maintain existing kerbside house numbering and will not repaint the numbers if they fade or peel.

Should there be more Police presence in the area? Should the Council put in “traffic calming” to slow traffic? Or would either of these options just annoy us even more as both are seen as an imposition upon our busy and entitled lives.

Really, it doesn’t matter what preventions are put in place, at the end of the day YOU are responsible when you climb behind that wheel – no-one else! So, slow down on the roads. Don’t be in so much of a hurry that you forget to ‘smell the roses’ and enjoy what nature has provided in your own backyard.

Cathy McGillivray 1st in Hervey Bay Toastmaster contest On the weekend of the 4th and 5th of March the Toastmaster International Central Division Conference was held at Hervey Bay and what a fantastic colourful celebration it was. As with all Toastmasters gathering old friends were met, new friends were made and firm friendships enhanced. With a gathering of around 100 Toastmasters the speeches were always going to be enthralling and this year was no exception with topics ranging from surviving homelessness, to the influence of Social media everyone attending was entertained throughout the weekend.

$100,000 in Seniors Week funding up for grabs

From the 2nd March 2017, community organisations and councils across Queensland can apply for subsidies of up to $1000 to help fund local events during Seniors Week 2017, to be held from 19-27 August.

Seniors Minister Coralee O’Rourke said the subsidies were a great way to help Queensland organisations show their appreciation for seniors, while encouraging them to get involved in the community. “Seniors Week is an opportunity to celebrate the diverse contributions of older people in the community, and a chance to say thank you for all that they do,” Mrs O’Rourke said. “Last year, thanks to the tremendous efforts of many groups, we hosted more than 850 events across the state, which is a huge achievement.

“This year’s theme – ‘A Queensland for ALL Ages’ – aims to bring people of all ages and backgrounds together, to celebrate the many contributions older people make to our communities. I urge community groups, organisations and councils to consider holding an event in their community to help make this year’s celebration bigger and better than ever

before.”

Seniors Week is coordinated by the Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland which receives Queensland Government funding to collaboratively plan, run and subsidise Seniors Week events and activities.

COTA Queensland Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans said Seniors Week was a great chance for all generations and cultures to come together to connect to services and explore programs available in their areas. “I’d encourage eligible organisations to plan events to meet the needs of seniors and to apply for subsidies by 31 March,” he said.

Mrs O’Rourke said while Seniors Week was a celebration, it was also about building stronger relationships between Queenslanders of all ages, which tied into the State Government’s vision to create more age-friendly communities.

“An age-friendly community is one that better meet the needs of older residents by considering liveability from all aspects,” Mrs O’Rourke said. “Our Queensland: An age-friendly community strategy has set the platform for a whole of government vision to create a community in which older people are valued, respected and have every opportunity to be involved. We can only achieve this vision if we as a community, government, individuals and sectors work in partnership to enable people of all ages to participate in community life.”

MELTING MUSCLES AND INDEPENDENCE-NESS

I’m a readaholic. I read anything and everything on health and fitness. I read research documents and scientific information and then just for a good laugh I will read stuff from places like Facebook, Dr Oz and other hocus pocus merchants – not only to keep myself amused but to be able to give my clients up to date information and to make sure they don’t waste money on the bottles of pocus that offers them hocus.

The scientific information tells me that anyone around the age of 35, who is inactive, will start to lose muscle and muscle function between 3% to 5% every year. Yep, this is the stuff that holds you up and lets you walk, sit, stand and wash your back – don’t exercise and these disappear faster than a pizza at a picnic! Yep at 65 you could easily have lost 40% of your muscle functions!

But anyone who is active and exercises regularly can reduce this loss and delay into their late 70’s, 80’s and beyond. Science tells me fitness is needed to keep your muscles and heart strong so that you can remain independent longer, and that without regular exercise you are far more likely to fall or require more assistance in your daily life.

But, when I say I’m a Personal Trainer, the most common thing I hear is “How do I lose weight?” The second most common thing I hear is “ohhhh! Honestly I never usually eat this double-chocolate-caramel-cream-sprinklecoated-toffee-drizzled-tim-tam-based cake” as the waiter stands behind them shaking their head and mouthing “yes he does”.

But fitness is definitely not only about weight loss, and age is no reason why being fit isn’t about still competing in a sport you love. I recently watched a video of a 95 year old woman complete a 60kgs deadlift at a powerlifting competition. You can bet her bones are strong and she doesn’t need someone to help her get dressed. Yes, fitness helps you play sport or lose weight, but it

can also help you go to the places you have dreamed about going to your whole life, climbing in and out of cars, buses, cruise liners and planes.

Now I’m pretty tired of “Fitness” being used as a catch phrase so I might start a movement to replace Fitness with something like Independence-ness or I Can Do Anythingness or Cause I Can-ness. Because the most important part isn’t the activity, the important bit is the results you get from the activity, especially if you want to age long, well and happy.

I get a huge amount of pleasure when I see my clients gaining their I Can Do anything-ness.

Being told things like “I was walking along the waterfront yesterday, suddenly I realised I actually wanted to jog and when I tried I could!

I can’t wait to take my grandkids to the beach next week!” This is what happens when fitness turns into Cause I Can-ness. When I consider how this lifestyle has changed me, I realise that if I had never started doing this I would not be able to easily ride a motorbike that weighs nearly half a tonne. I would not consider walking for an hour “a stroll” and at 56, I would not consider 30 pushups a “warmup” for a good workout.

So there you are struggling to reach the TV remote while slowly losing muscle and muscle function but you still dream of seeing Pacific Islands, European castles and Tibetan temples, is it too late? Never! One of the latest research papers I’ve read showed that test subjects in the 80’s were still able to regain muscle function even after years of inactivity. It may not be to the extent of changing you from turtle to turbo charged but it will make a difference to your life at any age.

So revisit your dreams, pull out those passions and checkout those brochures. If you start moving now you could still have time to be making those memories you always wished you had.

Senior Gentle Co-Ordination Exercises to Music Before You Start Find Your Favourite Music!

PLEASE START SLOWLY AND IF YOU BECOME UNCOMFORTABLE OR BREATHLESS STOPAND REST. Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off.

If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop!

Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises.

Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are to help with your co-ordination and are similar to what we do in Heartbeats classes.

Put on some music that you enjoy with a beat that isn’t too fast. If the beat is a bit too fast then use every second beat.

Remember exercising does becomes easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness.

So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Reach up with both hands to a point that is comfortable for you Keep one hand up and bring the other elbow down At the same time lift the opposite knee and try and touch your elbow to your knee Find the beat in your music and repeat slowly up to10 times Bring both arms down and rest Repeat with the other elbow and knee.

The new vaccines will be made available free of charge from mid-April to at-risk groups through the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and will also be available on the private market.

The 2017 quadrivalent influenza vaccines will cover two A strains of influenza (Michigan and Hong Kong) and two B strains of influenza (Brisbane and Phuket), as recommended by the World Health Organization.

Influenza is a significant cause of illness and death and we know that getting an annual flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself, your family and the community from the virus.

Around 4.5 million doses of seasonal influenza vaccines will be made available in 2017 through the National Immunisation Program.

The best advice from medical experts is that it’s important to get a flu shot every year as the circulating viruses change.

Influenza is estimated to be responsible for more than 5,000 hospitalisations and almost 170 deaths in Australia each year.

Council lease to help restore shellfish reefs along Pumicestone Passage Moreton Bay Regional Council has agreed to enter into a five-year community lease with aquatic animal health experts, Digsfish Services, to assist with their groundbreaking work to restore shellfish reefs and improve water quality in the Pumicestone Passage.

On Sunday 29th January members and friends from Bribie Island Baptist Church gathered for a special Thank-You Service and a farewell luncheon for Pastor John Gollan and his wife Robyn. John and Robyn had faithfully served the church and the local community for 16 years and people came from far and wide to wish them well in their retirement. A number of those present were previously members of the congregation but had moved away from the Island. They said that this was such a special occasion that they would not miss it as they wanted to wish them well and to be present to share the company of old friends and family.

John and Robyn intend having a rest before they decide on their future. They agree on one thing - that a holiday is on the agenda. It was a wonderful time to recall happy and blessed times

Mayor Allan Sutherland said Council had agreed at this week’s Council Coordination Committee Meeting to lease a 600m2 area of land within the Ningi Transfer Station, where Digsfish Services proposes to establish an oyster shell recycling station. Digsfish had been granted permission to operate within the Ningi Transfer Station, which he said was a great step forward for the local community and the restoration of the Pumicestone Passage. “A presence at the Ningi Transfer Station will give us a place to clean and recycle oyster shells, providing more opportunities for the community to get involved in our shellfish restoration project,” Dr Diggles said. “It’s exciting because for the first time we’ll have an opportunity to engage all local residents, local businesses and our schools in actively restoring Pumicestone Passage. Through this project hopefully our kids will learn about marine restoration projects in a practical way - what a great opportunity to teach the next generation about our local marine environment.”

State Government consultation on plastic bag ban receives more than 23,000 submissions More than 23,000 Queenslanders have had their say on the proposal to ban lightweight single-use plastic shopping bags in Queensland.

Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles said members of the public had until 27 February to fill out the online survey or make a written submission. “More than 23,000 submissions have been received so far, which shows that Queenslanders

are passionate about the issue of plastic bags in our environment,” Dr Miles said.

“Since the discussion paper was released in November last year, we have received overwhelming support in favour of a plastic bag ban. Around 900 million singleuse lightweight plastic bags are used in Queensland each year and up to 16 million bags are littered – many ending up in our beaches, parks and waterways. Plastic bags are the most conspicuous plastic litter item and take thousands of years to fully break down. Research has shown that plastic pollution in coastal waterways has serious impacts on marine wildlife, such as sea turtles and sea birds, which can ingest or become entangled in the bags.”

Dr Miles said a plastic bag ban is a critical step in the State Government’s long term plastic pollution reduction plan. “The ban will coincide with the introduction of the Container Refund Scheme in 2018 to reduce the impact of drink container litter on our natural environment,” he said.

“Lightweight plastic shopping bag bans are already in place and working well in other parts of the country including South Australia, the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania.

“We also want to take the next step and take a lead role in working with retailers nationally to develop voluntary initiatives to reduce the use of the thicker department store-style plastic bags.”

Through this community lease, Digsfish are proposing to establish an oyster shell recycling station, which would allow shells to be collected, cleaned and dried, before being used to restore shellfish reefs in the passage. The proposed shell recycling station forms part of a wider environmental program being championed by the Restore Pumicestone Passage environmental group, which includes local environmental groups and representatives from the University of the Sunshine Coast and the local indigenous community. The group works collectively to research and establish ways to improve water quality in the Passage and deliver environmental benefits to the local area. In fact, Dr Diggles was recognised at this year’s Moreton Bay Regional Council Australia Day Awards for delivering Australia’s very first community-driven oyster gardening project, which encouraged home owners along the canal to get involved in improving the Pumicestone Passage by growing their own oyster gardens. Moreton Bay to welcome GC2018 Queen’s Baton Relay Local legends are being called on to represent their community’s spirit, as the Moreton Bay Region prepares to host the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).

The eyes of the Commonwealth will be on the Region as the Baton journeys through Redcliffe on 30 March 2018 towards its final destination, the GC2018 Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018.

Across Australia approximately 3,800 Batonbearers are needed to share the dream of the ‘friendly Games’ as part of the QBR. Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said that until 15 May 2017 residents were encouraged to get behind the QBR celebrations and nominate a local legend to represent the spirit of Moreton Bay as a Batonbearer.

“We’re over the moon that the Moreton Bay Region has been chosen to be part of an event that will showcase our community to the world,” Mayor Sutherland said. “This is a rare opportunity to be part of history and to shine a light on the people and places that help make our region truly great. A handful of local residents will be given the opportunity to carry the Queen’s Baton through Redcliffe, showcasing our community spirit and some of our most

iconic landscapes to the world. We’re encouraging everyone to get involved by nominating a resident you believe to be a local hero in your community whether it’s someone who has achieved something extraordinary in their field, or who inspires others to be great.

Our community will also be invited to welcome the QBR to the Moreton Bay Region as it travels through Redcliffe on 30 March 2018, ahead of the largest multi-sport event to be staged in Australia in a decade.”

The Queensland housing market has shown moderate growth throughout 2016, with a final quarter that revealed strong results for houses in the southeast corner and a weaker result for units, according to the REIQ Queensland Market Monitor: December 2016 quarter report.

State government is not listening to the experts Felicity Moore The REIQ is disappointed in today’s announcement from the State Treasurer that the Government would not broaden the first home buyer grant to include established homes.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the Government was not listening to the needs of regional Queenslanders.

“We always welcome measures that help first home buyers get into the market,” she said.

“However, our concern is for the longterm impact and the bigger picture in regional Queensland, where new construction is exacerbating the oversupply issues that these markets are facing.

“House values are falling, with some markets as much as 30 per cent below levels five years ago. Continuously adding supply of housing to oversupplied markets is irresponsible and will slow down any future recovery.

“The Treasurer wants us to believe the only way to economic stability is through residential housing construction, but that’s simply not true.

“Real estate is one of the State’s largest employers, with some 50,000 people working in real estate, and the sector provides the State with the single largest

REALESTATE source of revenue through stamp duty and associated taxes.

“Regional Queensland is facing unique challenges and the Government must tailor its response to those challenges.

“A recent CoreLogic report into affordability identified that regional Queensland’s housing affordability was nearing similar levels to Melbourne.

Wages are flat or are going backwards, the cost of living is higher and it’s harder to save for a deposit. Bankruptcies in regional Queensland are rising, with more than 80 reported last quarter in Mackay alone.

“First home buyers in regional Queensland need more help than their southeast Queensland counterparts – and letting them use the grant to buy an established home would be a good start.

And it would help the real estate sector in regional Queensland stabilise. It would help slow or stop the fall of median values and it would help first home buyers get a foot on the ladder,” she said.

“The Government should offer first-home buyers the choice between new builds or established homes. Bring buyers to the market where there is ample supply – don’t keep adding to the supply.

“Real estate has long been this State’s golden goose, but this Government is in danger of killing off the goose.

Housing Bubble Speculation Unwarranted 9 March 2017 The chief executive of Australia’s largest network of independent real estate agents, Ray Ellis, says constant media speculation about the risk of an Australian housing bubble is based on overseas analysis that fails to account for Australia’s unique market circumstances.

‘The Organisation for Economic Cooperation & Development’s recent assertion that Australian house prices may represent a threat to the economy is similar to much of the foreign commentary we’ve heard before; it fails to fully appreciate the nature of our economy, how Australians invest, and where they want to live’ said Mr Ellis.

‘Both scenarios are unlikely’ said Mr Ellis.

‘The Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) preference would in fact be for further cuts to official interest rates if that didn’t increase the risk of further inflating house prices. While rates will eventually have to rise, that’s clearly not the RBA’s choice while inflation remains below target and the country is not at full employment.

And, with 1.1 per cent economic growth announced last week, a significant increase in unemployment is also unlikely.

Lots of Shabby not sure about the Sheik The latest craze in the art world is Chalk Paint. I chose to experiment and make my own. The one thing that led me to try Chalk Paint was that there was NO sanding of the project before painting. Ah yes, I thought, this is for me!

Adding a chalk like brew to any paint changes the end product to matt finish.

I thought this would be a perfect way to use all my scrap paint in the garage and have my new look furniture in a day or so. Wrong! When I looked at my supply of paint I realised there wasn’t any colour I liked. So, off to the hardware I went, to purchase a few small sample pots of paint and a couple of sponge rollers.

The white paint I already had a home.

Preferring to be an individual, I decided to use four colour on my cupboard instead of the usual one. Either water

Recipe: 3 Parts paint 1 Part plaster of paris Water to mix Make a smooth – watery mix with the plaster and stir thoroughly into paint.

I got the last coat mix wrong, making it very hard to remove - took me days to get it to a look that I think I’m ok with.

1.No sanding of the furniture piece.

Little did I know that sanding (more sanding that I care to think about), is the one thing that finishes the piece, ultimately giving you’re the desired effect. I must have spent 4 days straight sanding! White dust covered everything within 10 square meters. My hair adopted a strange wiry feel and everywhere dust could get into on my face, it did!

I’m still not too sure about my Shabby Sheik piece. I just knew that my furniture needed a new look. Well, I got that and looking back I enjoyed the process but I wish someone had told me that if you mix too much chalk into the paint it’s really hard to shift.

Expect DUST lots of DUST. Chalk Paint: There are Paints that you can purchase that come in many colours.

A little goes a long way. The best thing is, you can wash off what you don’t like easily when it is freshly painted. Adding the chalk to the paint, with water, thins it down and takes no time at all to dry.

2.Add a colour of your choice anywhere you would like it to show through the finished article.

Here’s a Tip: Take a photo on your phone when you apply each coat of paint so you know where to sand it off later on.

3.Once sanding is completed, finish off with either bee’s wax or matt varnish like I did.

4.There is a wealth of knowledge on the internet, I suggest you make the time to read up on a few recipes and techniques before you start - not like this bull at a gate here!

Moreton Bay’s new five-year blueprint open for feedback Moreton Bay Regional Council is seeking community feedback on its draft five-year blueprint to guide jobs creation, economic growth and lifestyle opportunities across the Moreton Bay Region.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said the 201722 Draft Corporate Plan would be available for feedback from today (1 March) until Tuesday 21 March 2017 and all residents were encouraged to have their say.

“It’s an exciting time to live, work and play in the Moreton Bay Region, as one of Australia’s fastest growing urban areas, with Queensland’s strongest economy,” Mayor Sutherland said. “The recent completion of our region’s largest ever infrastructure project, the Redcliffe Peninsula Line, also means our residents are now better connected than ever before to employment, education and lifestyle opportunities. But with more than 25,000 registered businesses and a population expected to grow by 40 per cent by 2036, we know we need strong, strategic direction to ensure we manage this growth well and maintain the enviable lifestyle residents know and love. Council’s Draft Corporate Plan sets out our priorities over the next five years, with clear targets to ensure we continue to foster a thriving region, with strong communities and plenty of local opportunities for residents in both employment and lifestyle. Energy assistance for Queenslanders in financial emergency The State Government is continuing its commitment to support vulnerable Queenslanders in times of need through reforms to its energy concessions.

Minister for Energy outlined changes to the Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme (HEEAS) to make it easier for households to access the Scheme. “HEEAS helps low-income households who are in short-term financial difficulty because of unexpected, emergency expenses to get back on their feet through a one-off payment of up to $720 towards their energy account,” Mr Bailey said. “Reforms implemented by the State Government will modernise the application process for HEEAS and reduce the administrative burden for applicants. The HEEAS application form has been simplified and shortened, and is now able to be provided electronically for customers if they wish. We are also providing the improved HEEAS application form directly to community groups and financial counselling organisations, enabling eligible customers to more conveniently complete an application with the help of their community support networks. In seeking to remove barriers to applying for the scheme, it has also been recognised that account holder details can change, for example, in the event of a family

As a result of these improvements, more Queenslanders in short-term financial distress will be able to access help.”

Mr Bailey said that the community sector was highly supportive of the changes, and that this reform is consistent with the Queensland Productivity Commission’s Electricity Pricing Inquiry’s recommendations. “HEEAS is one of a range of energy concessions offered by the State Government, including the electricity rebate of $330 per annum offered to pensioners, seniors, health care card holders and asylum seekers. Financial assistance is also available to households with an extra energy burden due to chronic medical conditions which require extensive use of air-conditioning, such as Multiple Sclerosis or severe inflammatory skin conditions. I encourage households to contact their energy retailer to find out more about support available to help with their electricity bills.”

BAREFOOT BOWLS AND BUFFET Pumicestone organisations can apply for 2017-18 Skilling Queenslanders for Work funding The State Government is calling on Pumicestone organisations to apply for the next round of funding that will help local job-seekers get the training they need to be employed.

Member for Pumicestone, Mr Rick Williams MP said the Government was now welcoming applications for the next round of funding under the Skilling Queenslander’s for Work program.

“Community organisations are now able to apply for funding that will help them conduct community-based projects that will train job-seekers and ultimately help them gain employment,” Mr Williams said. “Skilling Queenslanders for Work

funds skills development, training and job opportunities for unemployed, disengaged or disadvantaged Queenslanders through a suite of targeted skills and training programs.

More than 13,633 Queenslanders have taken part in the program since it was reinstated by the State Government.”

Minister for Training and Skills Yvette D’Ath said applications were now welcome for projects that will get underway in the 2017-18 financial year.

“The projects focus on the needs of the local community and build on the skills of young people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, people with a disability, mature-age job-seekers, women reentering the workforce and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,” Mrs D’Ath said.

Anzacs of the air war remembered at Caboolture

Next month, the second annual TAVAS Great War Flying Display weekend will be held at Caboolture airfield on the 22nd and 23rd of April.

This is a unique commemorative event The Fokker Eindecker – the first true fighter aircraft ever made, taking off at Caboolture airfield. This is one of only two 100% accurate flying reproductions in the world.

The Red Barons Fokker Triplane flies alongside a Bristol F2B fighter, over Bribie Island, prior to the TAVAS Great War Flying Display weekend event. which cannot be seen anywhere else in Australia. It acknowledges the special part Australian pilots and their crews have taken in the air war of every major conflict Australia has been involved in, over the last 100 years.

It is poignant that during the only centenary of World War One we will have in our lifetimes, only one organisation in

Australia has built and brought together the only collection of flying WWI type aircraft in this country.

Their aircraft are accurately built examples and one even uses an original 1918 rotary engine, which means the propeller is bolted to the engine and the entire engine spins around its crankcase.

There are only three aircraft in all of

Australia flying with this type of engine and The Australian Vintage Aviation Society (TAVAS) owns and operates two of them, which you can see at their upcoming flying display weekend. TAVAS also have an original 1917 engine, which will be bolted to a display stand, so people can see up close, the unique engine technology which just didn’t continue after the war.

Alongside the incredible collection of WWI type aircraft, are aircraft from WW2, Korean and Vietnam wars, all of which involved Australian pilots and ground crews. Australia’s contribution to the war in the air over the last 100 years has been significant, but largely over looked.

TAVAS intend to change that through demonstrating these aircraft to the public at their annual display weekend at Caboolture.

This came about as Anzac Day is well supported in Australia and we all recognise the major part Australians played in the ground war of WW1, but very few Australian’s realise we had pilots flying during that time. The unique TAVAS event, which always takes place the weekend immediately before Anzac day, raises recognition of those brave Australian airmen as well.

We had just over 500 pilots and observers flying during WW1, but we managed to punch well above our weight.

More than 10% of our pilots went on to become fighter aces of the first war to ever use aircraft.

Some of those aircraft will be on display at the TAVAS weekend event, including one by Australia’s one legged fighter Ace. Another one is the unique 2 seat example flown by Australia’s highest scoring

ace of the Middle East campaign, who worked closely with Lawrence of Arabia and his irregular fighters. Of course the most famous aircraft of WW1 will be flying that weekend – the infamous Red Barons Fokker Triplane. You will also see the first fighter aircraft of all time, one of only two flying examples in the world.

Although the weekend is one of remembrance and commemoration, it is an enjoyable and educational event for the whole family. There will be lots of re-enactors on site and other businesses and museums in the area will be on

display. There are ample food vendors and public conveniences for use.

There will be a great deal of movement and flying activity of vintage and modern aircraft and helicopters between the designated flying display times. You can sit in the cockpit of an ex-military fighter jet and joy rides will be available in a range of civilian and ex-military aircraft.

Those who are interested in learning how to fly can speak to a flying school on the day and may even take their first introductory flight!

James Campbell and Sons pioneered Queensland’s Island Tourism, and from an advertisement in the Brisbane Telegraph on 8 January 1883, we know that their new steamer Mavis commenced weekly trips to Woody Point, Scarborough and Bribie Island on 15 Jan 1883. With the experience gained over many years, using tugs and other workboats to carry passengers, they confidently embarked on a totally committed tourist venture.

In 1911 they formed a new company, Brisbane Tug and Steamship Company, and commissioned the building of the special purpose ship named Koopa an aboriginal word for flying fish. For 42 years (between 1911 and 1953) she provided regular services to Bribie

Island for residents, holiday makers, school excursions, business and trade picnics, carrying passengers, general cargo, groceries, building materials and beer. For the four years between 1943 and 1947 she was utilised for military service. Koopa was built in Scotland and crossed the world to steam into Brisbane on Christmas Eve 1911 and all who met her fell in love at first sight, and the romance continued right through her life - and beyond. Praise was plentiful, including “Luxurious, modern, grand advanced design, one of the largest ships to come to Brisbane, fast, with brilliantly lighted promenade, main deck, and saloons provided by no fewer than 159 electric lamps. The confectionery stall, light refreshments, dining room and bar, and as they found out later, a little gambling for those so inclined, met the needs of every individual: Luxury for the common man, at a reasonable price.”

Here’s a great idea!

By Deb Neill Driving through Bongaree recently, I came across a most unusual sight. In the middle of a driveway was a push bike complete with billy cart loaded with a whipper snipper and blower.

I noticed this young lad, dressed appropriately for outdoor work, complete with safety earmuffs and goggles mowing the lawn in the burning sun. I thought to myself ‘now here’s a young fellow who knows what he is doing’. Naturally I stopped for a chat. And this is how I met young Wyatt Chinn, an enterprising young man living in Bongaree.

At only 14 years of age, Wyatt has started his own business, spending all his spare time mowing, whipper snipping and cleaning up people yards from his bike and billy cart.

Wyatt to carry all the necessary equipment to do the required job. From what I noticed on this particular and subsequently other days, is that Wyatt is dedicated to his business and reputation, leaving everything neat and tidy when he leaves.

It’s plain to see where Wyatt gets his work ethics from. All adults in his life, from his late mother Shelby, his dad Rob and step-mum Sharon, are hard workers and have passed on a strong work ethic, believing that you must work hard to achieve your goals and get what you want.

I asked Wyatt what he is doing with the money that he has earnt. He told me that at-this-time his earnings are be invested back into his business enabling him to purchase more efficient equipment. Last year however, he was able to purchase himself a dirt bike.

What a marvellous effort! However, he is looking for someone with small acreage in which to ride his dirt bike in his spare time.

We at the ISLAND and Surrounds congratulate Wyatt for having a go and trust that his tenacity will inspire other young people to work hard using their initiative in their youth.

Building Connections Intercept is a band of youth workers like no other! They represent the young people of Moreton Bay and speak out for those who need our help the most.

10–18 years who are having trouble with home, school or life – Intercept’s amazing team is there to help them through the tough times.

Intercept Youth and Family Services provide school based youth support officers (SBYSOs) in High Schools, Youth Mental Health and Disabilities Support and Empowering Family Connections is there to help with problems at home.

They also have a transitions team for those in care and looking to make the move to living independently as well as people on the ground to help young people get the right education at the right time with YJET. Recently we came across Angela and Sarah, Youth Case Workers for Intercept Youth and Family Service. They were conducting one of the school holiday program activities in Pumicestone Passage at Bongaree, stand up paddle boarding. It was a beautiful day and everyone involved was definitely having lots of fun. Some in the group had never tried stand up paddle boarding before. Falling off was all part of the fun and mastering the sport felt very satisfying. This was just one of Intercept’s school holiday program activities. Other activities included taking a group of

In the past year, the Australian Government has been trying to introduce a new tax, this one concerning the sugar intake and percentage of people affected by obesity, leading to diabetes in our country. In 1995 only 10% of Australian adults were obese or overweight, now that has risen to 63%.

The proposed Sugar, Salt and Fat Tax has suggested a $1.37 tax for every 100 grams of saturated fat, $0.30 per one gram of sodium and $0.47 per 1 litre of sugary beverages.

For instance, a two-litre bottle of Coca-Cola would increase the shelf cost by 80 cents, meaning it would now cost $5.20, not $4.40.

Does this mean that fast food companies need to be more transparent in their labelling?

This new idea is hypothetically going to add an extra 2.1 years of life for every 100 Aussies by introducing an average change of 10% to certain products high in unhealthy ingredients and components. According to Grattan Institute’s Health Program Director Stephen Duckett this tax will be twofer, helping unhealthy Aussies think about how much sugar they’re consuming and financially aiding the Australian Government in their fight against obesity in our country.

This tax is essentially helping Australia become a healthier country, the idea hoping to save an amazing 1600 lives. Is this true?

Studies show that from 2011-12 Aussies were consuming an overwhelming 60 grams of sugar a day. That’s equal to 14 teaspoons,

Youth Page way above the endorsed less-than-10percent intake (9 teaspoons for a man, 6 teaspoons for a woman). It is imperative that the Aussie Government introduces this tax, even though many people believe it is unnecessary. They would prefer to continuously pack themselves full of the toxins that are currently harming them, by doing this they are paving their way to their own demise. They may not realise that 280 Australians develop diabetes every day. That is one person every 5 minutes.

But the tax isn’t just reducing the consumption of sugary foods in adults but in Aussie kids too. Thanks to this tax parents are predicted to lower the amount of cordials, fizzy drinks and fruit juices they supply to their kids, these just the results from a small tax increase on these unhealthy beverages. The consumption of these products had declined by 8-9 percent since the increase tax of a small 10 percent.

Some reports on the tax say that it doesn’t impact obesity, just the low-income Australian families and our country’s economy. Doctor Gigi Foster from the University of New South Wales opinion is (the tax is) “like taking aspirin for bird flu. We’re treating something that really has deep social and psychological reasons for existing with a facile monetary lever.”

This is going to cause the people who are suffering, to suffer even more. Maybe this tax is pointless, maybe Dr Gigi Foster is right, that the problem Australia has concerning obesity is deeper and more complex than we originally thought. Maybe the 63% of obese Australians aren’t the reason that sparked this controversial debate and caused the 37% left of us to suffer because of their sugar-abusive-actions.

Who is better?

Comparing Marvel to DC is like comparing a red apple to a green apple. The question that remains is, which one is better? Is it Marvel or DC? Who makes better movies, Marvel or DC?

“Marvel Studios is more consistent at making high-quality motion pictures than Warner Bros. and DC have. But then again, ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy blows most Marvel movies out of the water. Not to mention the fact that DC has outclassed Marvel in animated movies as well (Phantasm, Red Hood, etc.). But despite all this, Marvel is the ultimate winner, because of the high quantity of GOOD movies, they’ve released” Tigas (2016). And Tigas is right.

Marvel movies are better than DC and this is why they rate above DC in the movie debate.

Which one is better in regards to comic books?

Since the 1930s, Marvel and DC Comics have had a friendly rivalry, which stemmed from the comic book pages, before transcending onto the big screen. Movies such as The Dark Knight (DC), The Avengers (Marvel), and Guardians of the Galaxy (Marvel) have broken box office records, showing that film adaptations of comic book superheros — even obscure ones — are truly a force to be reckoned with. However, despite the similarity, avid fans know there are major differences between the two companies. DC Entertainment is under Warner Bros., which reported about $6 billion in retail sales.

Marvel vs DC However, as DC does not have a separate production house away from Warner Bros., the numbers include big mainstays such as Harry Potter and The Hobbit. In contrast, Marvel’s separate division can use all its marketing forces to promote its latest superhero film.

Marvel Vs DC

Marvel has a continuous, cohesive world both on the page and on the screen. The ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ began in 2008 with Iron Man. He, among film-adapted superheroes including Captain America, the Hulk and Thor, appeared in The Avengers (2012). A similar cast appeared in the 2015 Avengers: Age of Ultron, and last year’s, Captain America: Civil War. The continuity also transfers to the small screen with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and several Netflix series, including: Arrow, The Flash and Agent Carter.

Which one is better?

Over all there is no way in telling which one is better. It all comes down to your preference on which one is better. In my opinion, I would have to go with Marvel but if your opinion is different, that’s okay because everyone can have their different opinions. Don’t think you should change your mind to Marvel if you like DC. Many people like Marvel and DC. They both have their pros and cons but in the end, there are just two different companies who sell similar things just with different characters.

I then had children reading out loud to each other. Our older students read to Preps and little ones read to me. I even had a lovely year 7 student read her original poem. World read aloud day draws attention to the fact that many children in our world today, do not have the luxury of learning to read or access to books as we do in Australia.

So with World Poetry day coming up on Tuesday 21st of March – what was your favourite children’s poem? I have to say the classic “Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lear would be a poem that most people recognize and children love.

There is often an argument we Librarians have which is ‘What is a poem’? Why simple rhyming books such as Dr Suess’s Fox in Socks, or Green Eggs and Ham get classified as serious poetry? So while the puritans battle this question out. For myself, I love the rhyming word and the fun it creates when you have a rhythm to the written word, it makes reading so much more enjoyable. I will talk a little more about rhythm and how it helps your little one in reading at another time.

In the meantime I hope you keep reading aloud and find that favourite poem that you love and share it!

SUSTAINABLE GARDENING SOILS AIN’T SOILS PT 8 Soils aint Soils Part 8.

Last issue I touched base on the problems of adding fertiliser to the soil in temperatures above 30 degrees and how the key to implementing a successful fertiliser program, is having ample moisture available in the soil before adding any fertiliser. Also I mentioned how the accumulated excess salts build up in your soil profile and how they can contribute to dehydration and fertiliser burn.

Managing Moisture

The practice of becoming non reliant on chemicals alone, with the focus on finding the balance between treating pests and diseases as they arise, while ensuring that preventive methods like cultural control, such as mulching, composting and good hygiene practices and incorporating organic matter when possible is my goal and motto, but how do we implement a recovery strategy now for our lawns and gardens suffering from heat stress?

Once we have got some moisture back into the soil profile albeit briefly before it percolates away, then this is the time to strike by adding a buffing agent like humic acid, these treatments are high in Carbon which assist in humus production, which is the magic ingredient in healthy soil. Humic acid can actually displace high sodium levels, buffers fertiliser inputs and soil toxins and is very useful on our sandy soils that have been irrigated long term with bore water.

There are two main types, a slow release granular form, which is excellent for long term soil improvement and a soluble form which is easy to apply to lawns and gardens. This is the best recovery option before implementing any other fertiliser program. You can also add some fish emulsion or seaweed via a hose on applicator at the manufacturer’s recommendations as a second follow up treatment and this will assist to stimulate the microbial life in the soil and help unlock those vital nutrients. This is something to think about next time before top dressing your lawns or mulching your gardens also.

If the answer my friend, is blowing in the wind, then where did the rain go?

On my rounds last month, I was called to arms to assist if I could with lawns and gardens suffering from heat stress around Bribie Island and surrounding districts. Unfortunately the rains that were forecast for us turned out to be a non event, so gardening for some folks became more like a game of chess, rather than a therapeutic past time. Now as the weather systems rest entirely in the laps of the gods, we can learn valuable lessons from this year’s environmental extremes in regards to, what worked for us and what didn’t. And if we are wise, how can we prepare our lawns and gardens to be more resilient during the next seasonal variation of environmental stress?

We may of noticed how quickly the lawns browned off and garden beds dry out during the summer months, but then how do we keep the moisture in the ground for longer next year? Well I have mentioned the value of organic matter and Humic acid in the previous article but training your plants and lawns to develop a more stronger root system by irrigating less frequently, but for longer periods, is the best starting place because it encourages the plant roots to reach deeper into the soil profile to search out those elusive vital moisture reserves, which will then give them a fighting chance to survive

Well that said, it’s quite a challenge to rebuild your soil with microbial life when you have sandy soils that have little or no moisture retention capabilities. Also if you have applied various chemicals over time such as herbicides, insecticides or slow release fertilisers this season, you could be forgiven for feeling disappointed or defeated indeed, as we waited in anticipation for our usual February rains to revive and rehydrate our sward of green, which never really eventuated.

Timing your rebuild strategy when you have had a night of rainfall is an excellent start!

Many years ago, I remember a case in point so vividly that verifies my theory and provides a valuable insight to the woes of watering every day.

Beautiful Flowers- Hymenocallis littoralis or Spider lilly Although these tough as nails Hymenocallis have been utilised in the landscape for many years successfully and even more so here in the subtropics and coastal areas, they really seem to flower at their best after the rain season. That said they still are flowering this Autumn Hymenocallis littoralis have the long strappy somewhat thin green sword shaped leaves similar to Agapanthus. The flowers are sensational in design and as their common name suggests they look like a large white spider. The long thin ribbon looking, petals are connected to a central white cup and equally as fascinating the stamanoides that radiate from the centre also resemble an upside down spider. There is a slight fragrance but more noticeable at night.

There are many species and even a variegated cultivar which adds a dramatic effect to the landscape.

I just love them and they do well here on Bribie Island.

This lovely elderly lady had the most beautiful vibrant cottage style garden full of annuals and perennials in full bloom and all who walked past it loved the show indeed. One day the lady took ill and was in hospital for three weeks and her siblings tried in vain to keep her garden flourishing for when she returned home, but to no avail, unfortunately absolutely everything wilted and collapsed and it was only the first week in September. The reason why, was her frequent daily irrigation regime consisted of a hand held hose for 20 minutes at a time, 3 times a day, 7 days a week, which meant that the lawns and plants had luxury levels of water at all times and as a result, the plants only developed surface roots only.

Therefore without the elderly lady’s continuous love and fastidious daily care, the plants were doomed when faced with the very real prospect of surviving without her frequent regular watering schedule. So deep watering is a great first step when adding new lawns or plants to your patch in preparation for the hotter months, but the trick is to wean them off from once daily, to every three days and then once weekly, to get them established.

This coupled with organic fertilisers, humic acids, seaweed tonics and using the right mulch that will protect the soil but will allow ample moisture through to the gardens and plants will assist greatly for them to recover as quick as possible next time around. So here’s to the gentle, early autumn breezes, which give promise of a cooler climate on the way. Until next issue- I am off to the beach to aid in my own recovery from the heat!

Sweeping reforms Call for stories to bring ex-HMAS to keep the community safe Tobruk to life Member for Pumicestone has welcomed sweeping reforms planned for Queensland’s probation and parole system.

Mr Rick Williams MP said the State Government’s new blueprint for reform will boost community safety, break the cycle of re-offending and make a real difference to people’s lives. The reforms were recommended by Mr Walter Sofronoff QC following his recent review of the probation and parole system.

“They represent the most sweeping changes to the way in which prisoners are dealt with, in prison and while they are on parole or probation. These are the biggest reforms in recent history in Queensland Corrective Services and reinforce our government’s resolve to ensure community safety. For instance, before a prisoner is released into the community on parole or probation, they will undergo intensive case management.

Prisoners will receive this close supervision while they are in prison and when they are allowed to be released into the community on probation or parole,” Mr Williams said.

The State Government is investing heavily in the reform package over the next six years. “We will also create jobs by employing an additional 329 fulltime equivalent staff in Queensland Corrective Services, particularly in probation and parole, and another 18 FTE Queensland Health staff to provide alcohol, drug and mental health services.

The more effective our parole system is, the safer the community is from crime.

Importantly, our reforms are about being tough on crime and smart about the causes of crime. They are aimed at reducing crime by reducing the risk of re-offending.”

Some of the key recommendations that the State Government will implement are set out below: • Employ additional staff and strengthen the Probation and Parole Service so that it can deliver more effective and intensive case management and supervision of parolees • Boost rehabilitation services for prisoners to address the causes of crime, including drug addiction and mental health issues

Queensland’s Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing (NPSR) would like to hear from local community members who served time on the exHMAS Tobruk.

These recollections will form part of an interactive website being created by NPSR to promote the scuttling of the vessel to create an artificial reef and world-class dive site in waters off Hervey Bay. “Throughout the transformation of this historical icon to dive site, we want to make sure the stories of former servicemen and women are recognised and recorded for future generations,” Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef, Dr Steven Miles said.

“It’s important that those who served our great state and nation are given an opportunity to tell their story. Their tales will help to honour and understand the important role the HMAS Tobruk played in troop deployment and the movement of munitions and heavy transport equipment.”

A former medic who served on the HMAS Tobruk has reached out to share his story with the department. Dr Brad Murphy created a memorial at his medical centre just outside of Bundaberg for veterans and ex-servicemen. “Ashfield Country Practice is a mainstream general practice with a specialisation in aboriginal and veteran health. The memorial is a central feature of the surgery, surrounded by a garden to ensure that his patients feel comfortable when visiting. It is a great way to honour those who served, many of which are patients of mine,” Dr Murphy said.

Member for Bundaberg Leanne Donaldson said NPSR is working in partnership with the Fraser Coast and Bundaberg Regional Council to prepare the vessel for scuttling. Ms Donaldson said the dive site will provide a unique experience for divers, attracting international tourists to the Fraser and Bundaberg Coast. “The two-year project to transform the ex-HMAS Tobruk into a world-class dive site will support an estimated 50 new local jobs,” she said.

“NPSR could consider the possibility of staging a community open day when health and safety risks have been addressed on the vessel, providing the public with an opportunity to board the ship before it is declared a construction zone”.

Preheat oven to 400˚C Combine first 9 ingredients in a large bowl; add 1/4 cup ketchup.

Boy! there were some terrific athletes competing for places. I caught up with a few of them after they competed in the short course.

The weather couldn’t have been better and the golf course was in great condition. The competition was played in three grades with Nett winners, runners up, and gross winners in all grades.

With the Easter break just about on us it is the time to make sure we have booked that camping spot as they are filling up very quickly with Ocean Beach camping fully booked and only a handful being left at Poverty Creek. Well it’s great out in the water over the last few weeks lots of fish being caught throughout the passage. We had one angler catching 30 dart on the surfside near 3rd lagoon using preserved beach worms. Reports of snapper being caught at Sandstone Point and at the Ripples and the only bait to use is Cuttlefish.

The boys have been out crabbing with some big mud crabs being caught at Lime Pocket and Ningi the usual bait mullet and also some sand crabs still about in the passage near IGA. There have been several reports of Flathead at Bongaree Jetty, Bellara boat Ramp and Ningi Creek with the anglers using chicken gut and mullet gut. Just the normal catches from the passage of whiting and bream at the Avon Wrecks, White Patch, Skirmish Point and Red Beach with live blood worms and also one angler catching 8 bream at the Bongaree lock on prawns.

There is also a few reports at Cape Moreton of some good size Cobia. You could also try Normans Gutter where they are getting big Bream on prawns.

There is also plenty of Whiting and Dart on the surfside. There is plenty of fish being caught off the banks so you don’t need a boat to get amongst them Whiting and Bream along the Pumicestone Passage with reports of bait being Prawns and Live Blood Worms.

TIPs for surf fishing Polarised Glasses There’s no doubt that being able to identify any gutters or holes along the beach you’re fishing will increase your chances of catching good fish. Polarised glasses can greatly enhance your ability to do this by cutting the light’s reflection off the water making it easier to clearly identify any changes in water colour this may mean better identification of schooling fish such as salmon or baitfish, gutters, reef, weedy outcrops or if at a river mouth where the edge of the dirty water lies.

Understand Braided and Mono lines Braid and mono lines both bring advantages and disadvantages to fishing. When surf fishing it’s valuable to be aware of these differences and the impact it has on what you’re doing.

Braided lines have very little stretch.

This can make it difficult to set a sinker when fishing in conditions with large or heavy wave actions. It may also increase the chance of being snapped off if you receive a heavy hit from a fish.

Monofilament lines can circumvent these problems but in return you can lose bite sensitivity and casting distance. Also while the flexibility of mono will allow for some give through the impact of a wave, its larger diameter, sometimes up to twice the diameter of a braided line, can create issues. Due to the larger diameter the line tends to catch more of the wave impact as well as the wash of the current under the water. Braided lines also have a low tolerance to abrasion. This means if you’re fighting a fish and it takes you to the reef or rocks, braid is likely to give way a lot quicker than mono line will This can be easily fixed by using a mono leader which will provide that protection needed in these sorts of areas.

Make sure you go and try fishing at The Ripples entrance to Banksia Canals to get a feed of Snapper be sure to get some Cuttlefish. Good reports of bream and flathead being caught in the Canals. If you looking to catch live bait plenty of Squid at night at the Bribie Bridge and Bongaree Jetty.

I have had no weigh ins so if you guys have any big catches please send me your photos and come and weigh your big catch in. Don’t forget the kids even go into the draw to win some fishing gear.
