MEET OUR DESIGNERS Island Batik’s Senior Vice President of Design Services, Kathy Engle, is a wealth of knowledge and endless creativity, with over 30 years of experience in the industry. In addition to bringing her own designs to life in each seasonal collection, Kathy provides guidance and inspiration for the fabric design team, leading fellow fabric designers though the batik design process and curating collections for Signature Collection designers. “Collaborating with other artists on the fabric design process is an enriching and rewarding experience. Designer projects are shown with yardage charts and QR codes. QR codes allow the Island Batik sales team to scan products into orders efficiently. An “Order All Fabrics” QR code will order all of the fabrics in the chart to meet the yardage requirements for the number of kits the buyer would like; the buyer will be given the option to include or exclude Backing and Binding fabrics. If a Backing or Binding fabric is a SKU that has been repeated elsewhere in the chart, a second bolt will be placed on order. Yardages will not be added together.

DESIGNER PROJECT DISCLAIMER

Not all yardage requirements are exact; ALWAYS check the pattern jacket before cutting kits. Island Batik cannot accept responsibility for yardage requirements that have been revised after the catalog has been printed. All SKUs listed multiple times are calculated multiple times when figuring bolts per 12 kits.

Jessica’s passion for sewing and quilting began as soon as she was big enough to sit in front of a sewing machine. She made her first quilt at 16 and quilting has been a huge part of her life since, even while stationed overseas in the Marine Corps! Jessica loves to teach and encourage her students to find their own individual styles.

Chris began quilting over 27 years ago when a “new” hobby quickly became an all-consuming passion. Everything she sees influences her designs — from color and texture, to architecture and nature. Leah Day is an award-winning quilter and the creator of the Free Motion Quilting Project, a blog where she has shared over one thousand quilting video tutorials. Designer Spotlight

Karla Alexander, Saginaw Street Quilt Company Quilt designer and author, Karla Alexander, lives in beautiful Salem, Oregon with husband Don and family dog, Lucy. Karla has written eight books, each published by Martingale & Co. She has been featured on Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson as well as the Quilt Show with Ricky and Alex. Karla is also proud to be included as one of the designers on Creative Grids Rulers team. Karla releases patterns under the name Saginaw Street Quilt Company and has been a featured teacher at many quilt retreats where she has taught thousands of students how to quilt using a variety of methods including her own stack method. Karla’s quilting philosophy is to enjoy the process, learn from your experience and take what you learn from one project on to the next!

Designer Spotlight

Pauline McArthur, Funky Friends Factory Pauline lives in Australia, on a ‘bush block’ north of Brisbane. Inspired by a teddy bear design class, Pauline created her first soft toy - a ‘baby-safe bunny’ with no chewable, chokeable bits. She sold them at markets where they were so popular that she moved on to ‘mass-production’, hence the “Factory” in Funky Friends Factory! In 2006, after designing a soft toy pattern range while working full time, she launched her website, FunkyFriendsFactory.com. Pauline focuses on making her toy patterns as ‘simple as possible, without compromising on cute!’ and has created a number of patterns for beginners and children so everyone can experience the thrill of making their own soft toys. Her patterns are used by home sewers around the globe, some have been featured in sewing magazines and a few have been licensed to Simplicity. She teaches, designs in conjunction with a fair trade organization in India, and contributes to numerous online sewing communities.

Judy Niemeyer, Quiltworx Quiltworx.com is a family owned and operated quilt pattern design company located in Northwest Montana. The company was originally started by Judy Niemeyer and every pattern includes some element of paper piecing, a technique that Judy learned in the beginning of her teaching career and has been using to teach quilters how to create heirloom quality quilts for over 20 years. Designer Spotlight

Teri Tope, Tope Creative Teri Henderson Tope has sewn her whole life and has been a quiltmaker since 1983. She is an internationally recognized teacher and lecturer who loves all types of appliqué. Creative and full of life, Teri’s motto is “Well behaved women seldom make history, so let’s make a little history”. Her quilts have been exhibited in shows across the United States and in Japan, winning awards along the way. Her quilts and patterns have been published in Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, Quilter’s Quarterly, The American Quilter, Keepsake Quilting and Clotilde. Teri is the Author of four books, published by the American Quilter’s Society. She has designed over 35 patterns for her company, Material Girl Designs. Teri has been a member of the Appliqué Society since 1998 and served six years on the TAS board as Marketing Chair. She is a member of The National Quilter’s Society and it’s Columbus Ohio chapter, The Quintessential Quilting of which she served as Vice President and President, and the American Quilters Society. Teri loves to travel, teach, lecture and share her joy of appliqué.
