“Rice Coast” were brought to the Lowcountry to work in the rice and cotton fields. The landscape was hot, remote and teeming with mosquitos. Physically and culturally isolated, the workers were left to live, worship, speak and cook as they wished. They became known as the Gullah, and they created their own cuisine and language, holding tight to treasured West African skills and traditions.

GULLAH Culture

Did You Know? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his “I Have a Dream” speech among the Gullah on St. Helena Island, SC. The 1991 film Daughters of the Dust, about three generations of Gullah women, was the first feature directed by an African American woman to have a general U.S. theatrical release. Hilton Head Island’s Gullah community in Mitchelville passed the country’s first law requiring universal schooling. Pat Conroy’s novel, The Water is Wide, fictionalized the Gullah community on Daufuskie Island, SC.

T

here is something both familiar and exotic about the Lowcountry. For those looking to unlock its mysteries, understanding the Gullah culture in South Carolina may just be the key. In the late 1600s, rice was desired all over the world. Enslaved Africans from West Africa’s 30 Island Events January-February 2025

Gullah cuisine grew out of the resourcefulness of enslaved African women, who applied European and African cooking methods and flavors to locally available foods, including fish, shrimp, oysters, crabs and crops native to the Americas such as tomatoes, corn and squash. Peanuts, watermelon, yams, okra and collard greens were imported from Africa. Quintessential Gullah dishes include fried fish, stewed shrimp and hoppin’ john. In fact, many classic “Southern” dishes came straight from Gullah kitchens. An English-based hybrid, the Gullah language includes nearly 4,000 African words. Gullah is still in use today, especially in storytelling. Spoken, chanted or sung, Gullah stories are proudly passed from one generation to the next. The Gullah also craft beautiful coiled baskets handwoven from sweetgrass and palmetto fronds. Other Gullah traditions include the making of cast nets and the singing of lively spirituals, music that influenced American jazz, blues and gospel traditions. Today, America’s Gullah population is estimated at approximately 300,000. However, because up to 70 percent of enslaved Africans landed in the Lowcountry, many more African Americans have Gullah roots. The history of the Gullah people is one of adaptation, survival and community — and the story of the Lowcountry is incomplete without the Gullah experience. hiltonhead.com

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE • Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. Photo provided by Hilton Head Outfitters Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! HILTON HEAD HISTORY Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.” Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today. hiltonhead.com

Not only was it plentiful when I was a child, it was also useful in many things that we did. Like many islanders, Pop and Momma believed in doing all sorts of things for comfort. During my parents’ younger days, Spanish moss was used for stuffing mattresses and pillows. We fed our cows and horses the Spanish moss. It was also said to be good for treating high blood pressure. They allowed the moss to stay in their shoes until it was dry, then removed it and repeated the process. Folks somehow knew when the green Spanish moss had helped lower their blood pressure. I never understood how the Spanish moss helped, but it worked for island folks. It was their belief and nature’s way. For them it worked, and that was all that mattered. It is prime time for speckled sea trout

SPECKLED SEA TROUT a Winter Fishing Adventure

inter fishing in the Lowcountry is a true angler’s delight! Those that are ready to face the cold are in for an inshore treat. In January, when the chill sets in, our waters are filled with black drum, red drum, and sheepshead. One species stands out more than others, it is prime time for speckled sea trout. These beauties are often found in the calmer, warmer waters of estuaries and inshore creeks. With their distinctive spots and feisty behavior, they make for an exciting catch. Speckled Sea Trout, or winter trout, thrive in South Carolina’s estuaries from late fall to early spring, peaking in January. They gather in deeper, warmer waters during this time, making them easier to target. The average size is around 16 inches and 1.5 pounds, with the state record being 11 pounds, 13 ounces. They typically live to be 8-10 years old. Trout are generally schooling fish. They like to stay in areas of moving water, commonly within current rips or eddies. They gather along banks lined by oysters, as well as creek mouths and points. During the coldest part of the year, trout become lethargic and often hole up in the deepest parts of the creek. Large adults primarily eat other fish including menhaden, spot, mullet, croakers and mud minnows. Trouts mature into adults after 1 year. At this age, they will begin to spawn from April to September. Spawning usually occurs at night near piers, pilings and deeper water holes. Males will attract females to the area with sounds, by vibrating their swim bladders. Their larvae then move to their shallow water tidal creek nurseries. As they get larger, they move into larger and deeper creeks. To catch the biggest speckled sea trout you want to go out around 40 Island Events January-February 2025

the full moon. Early mornings, late afternoons, and moving tides are optimal fishing times. Anglers use light to medium action spinning gear, spooled with 20 lb. braided line and 15-20 lb. fluorocarbon leaders. Water clarity will help you determine the size and length of the leader, cleaner water calls for lighter leaders. Live shrimp are one of the trout’s favorite meals, but they can also be fooled by artificial baits. Winter water clarity makes the trout fishing season ideal for fly fishing. As spotted sea trout are a subtropical species, they can suffer from “winter kills” when water temperatures drop below 46°F. These trout are able to gradually adjust to decreasing temperatures by moving to deeper areas. Excessive cold can lead to mass mortalities, and larvae are particularly susceptible to low salinities from freshwater influx. These fish tend to stay in the estuaries where they were spawned, this means that their populations can suffer from an increasing human fishing pressures. Conservation concerns include habitat degradation, compromised water quality, and potential overharvest in recreational fisheries. Protecting their habitat and monitoring environmental changes are vital for sustaining their populations. hiltonhead.com

off right, Libra. Expect enthusiasm, support and teamwork in the workplace. Your leadership skills will also pay off. Remember, encouragement and praise earn far more reward than criticism. Expect success at home, too! It’s cold outside, perhaps a snuggle would do you good. If you’re single, be on the lookout for an exciting newcomer.

SCORPIO Feeling the winter

blues? How about a quick visit to a warmer climate? If not, expect lively conversations and fun at home for the next few weeks. The end of the year was a little stressful. Use this time to relax and recharge. You’ve put in the hard work, breathe deep and refocus. Don’t forget about your health.

SAGITTARIUS All that Holiday

AQUARIUS Take care of yourself

as we ease into this New Year! The holiday was busy, now is the time for self-care. Been slacking with your exercise? Get back at it. Slow on your meditation or journaling. It’s a brand new year, reset your healthy habits. Make a date with friends and get out for a nice evening.

PISCES Your social skills are in

demand, Pisces. Enjoy being the life of the party, but be wary on the romantic front. Hasty decisions often lead to unintended results. Also be mindful of your health. nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips:

• Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips:

• Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com
