This American hybrid grape produces a tasty white wine.

However, things are evolving. Over the years, through experimentation, the quality of hybrid grapes has vastly improved. One of these improvements was the creation of Chardonel, a late-ripening, white wine grape.

The New York State Agricultural Experiment Station made a cross of Photo: T.o.m.~commonswiki assumed [CC BY-SA 3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/)] the hybrid grape Seyval with the classic Chardonnay grape. By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery Retaining much of the original Chardonnay taste, the result is a vigorous, productive vine Chardonel is an American hybrid that produces superior wine quality with grape that produces a delicious good cold hardiness and disease resistance.

white wine.

Before we discuss Chardonel, however, it is important to learn about American hybrid grapes, which were originally created during the European phylloxera blight that began in the late 1800s. By the early 1900s, most European grapes — such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Chardonnay — were nearly wiped out. One of the most successful solutions was to graft phylloxera-resistant American rootstock onto European grapevines. Later on, American grape-breeding programs started to focus on how hybrid grapes could be used to improve vineyards in the United States. Since the 1950s, hybrid grapes have become the staple in most wine regions outside the West Coast, because growing traditional grapes in other American regions can be challenging for a wide variety of reasons. Hybrid grapes can better withstand the short growing seasons in the Midwest and Northeast and the humidity in the South. They are much more disease resistant, which drastically reduces the amount of chemicals used in the vineyard. However, American hybrid grapes don’t get much love. France bans them in classified wines, and most other European countries allow them only in accordance with the lowest labeling standards. Serious wine drinkers can detect the signature grape jelly taste imparted by the American stock. Others have described hints of cotton candy and lack of body and complexity. 14 Island Events July 2019

In fact, it’s so similar to Chardonnay, many East Coast wineries that have been successfully producing Chardonnay have replaced the vines with Chardonel. Grape growers have found that Chardonel requires less pruning and thinning and fewer chemical applications. Virginia grape growers note that Chardonel can thrive in humid conditions, while Michigan and New York State growers value the grape for its ability to ripen into early fall. Chardonel can be barrel-fermented and aged to produce a dry, oaky, full-bodied wine, similar to a warm-climate California Chardonnay. It also can be made into a light-bodied, fruity style wine with little to no oak aging, similar to a cool climate Chardonnay from wine regions such as Washington, Oregon and the Burgundy region of France. At Island Winery, we use Chardonel in our Sea Island White, which is a light, crisp white wine blend. Sometimes we use Chardonel on its own, but more often we blend it with other hybrid grapes, including one of its parents, Seyval. Hybrid grapes definitely get some serious love at Island Winery. Stop by and pick up a bottle or two to try it for yourself! The perfect bottle of hand-crafted artisan wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Rd. Wine by the glass, cheese platters and $5 tastings are available Monday-Saturday from 12:30-5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or www.islandwinery.com. hiltonhead.com

HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. 1520s

Thousands of Years Ago Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1663 Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton's Headland.”

1861-1865 The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North's blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Late 1950s

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island's distinctive character. hiltonhead.com

Conquistadors explored the area.

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

Post Civil War - 1956 After the Civil War, the Island's population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Today Fraser's legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly sea island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm -- all in one unforgettable destination. Neptune K Statue

at Shelter Cove Harbour he towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a largerthan-life sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.

T

Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge. When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot-wide base, the numbers indicate the precise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figurative sundial, the statue was originally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey, and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measure ments before the one-ton statue was installed, ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time. They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star. An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights generations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. Stop by to see King Neptune in person and to experience a true Hilton Head Island icon.

he Harbour Town Lighthouse, which was completed in 1970, is the first privately financed lighthouse built since the early 1800s. Nicknamed “Fraser’s Folly,“ Charles Fraser, the visionary developer of The Sea Pines Resort, believed a distinctive landmark, along with a professional golf tournament, would generate interest in the fledgling seaside community. As usual, Fraser was right, and today the candy-striped, hexagonal structure has become synonymous with Hilton Head Island.

Harbour Town Lighthouse This landmark rises 93 feet above the Calibogue Sound and frames the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links.

Rising 93 feet above the Calibogue Sound and framing the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links, the red-and-white striped lighthouse guides golfers off the tee. The backdrop for one of golf’s most picturesque finishing holes, #18 was once part of the $1 million Kodak Challenge, a celebration of “the beautiful holes and memorable moments in golf.” Panoramic views of the Harbour Town Yacht Basin and Golf Links, the Liberty Oak, Calibogue Sound and Daufuskie Island, are just one reason to climb the 114 stairs to the top of the lighthouse. Along the way, the Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum offers a self-guided “climb through time” with displays and artifacts showcasing various stages of Hilton Head history. Offering a unique “elevated” shopping experience, The Top of the Lighthouse Shop features over 2,000 items, including Crystal World lighthouse figurines, Harbour Lights collectibles, Christmas ornaments, Trollbeads and local art and photography. Wave to family and friends via the webcam, or visit harbourtownlighthouse.com to zoom in on the yacht basin, the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links or the Liberty Oak, where family favorite Gregg Russell has entertained generations of visitors for more than four decades. The Harbour Town Lighthouse is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. until sundown. Admission is $4.50 per person, free for ages 5 and under. Accommodating up to 40 people, the lighthouse may also be reserved for private parties and functions. (843) 671-2810, (866) 305-9814 or harbourtownlighthouse.com. hiltonhead.com

Horoscope July 2019 ARIES This month, you’re putting a lot of thought into what your life could have been like. Focus on making every day as dazzling as possible. Find areas that can use improvement and get to work! TAURUS Studies have shown that giving thanks every day actually leads to a brighter outlook and a better overall mood. Set a daily alarm on your phone and list three things you’re grateful for. You’ll give your perspective an instant boost. GEMINI Stress may have you feeling a little off-balance this month. Try turning off all but your essential phone notifications. Want an uptick in your love life? Stop looking for love online. Keep your eyes open because someone special may already be in the picture. CANCER Research shows that the act of putting your bare feet, hands or body on the earth can help with circulation, inflammation, anxiety and much more. This month, find a way to sneak in “grounding” whenever you can. Your electrons will thank you. LEO You may have thoughts about making a major life change this month. Instead of ignoring those inclinations, try to make conscious choices about what you want to hear and learn. Before you know it, you will be ready to make an informed decision. VIRGO Studies show that people can actually heal themselves by just visualizing it in their minds. What’s in your mind right now? Are your inner thoughts healing and motivating or negative and defeatist? The choice is entirely up to you. 46 Island Events July 2019

LIBRA Due to unforeseen circumstances, you are giving some thought to your legacy this month. Start by envisioning what you would want said at your memorial service and live with that end in mind. It’s never too late to become the person you want to be. SCORPIO Feel like you don’t have time for yourself? Consider how much time you spend pointlessly scrolling or watching your favorite TV shows. Add a facial, a foot soak, some stretching or even exercise. Simple acts of self-care can go a long way to boost your overall health. SAGITTARIUS What’s your body language like when you're with the people closest to you? Does it communicate respect and love, or are you reserving all of your reverence for authority figures and strangers? Stay focused on what's most important. You won’t regret it. CAPRICORN Where’s your sense of humor these days? The moment you start taking yourself too seriously, life gets a lot more challenging. Try laughing off some of the stuff that's been bothering lately. Beware of major changes at work. AQUARIUS Are you putting in the time in your relationships or do you let others do the work? Remember that all healthy relationships require effort from both parties. This goes for your love life as well. Don’t let being “busy” eat up what you value most in life. PISCES Do you tend to kick the can down the road? True maturity means owning up to your actions. A nearby Libra wants to talk to you. Take the time to hear what they have to say. hiltonhead.com

A Day on the Water L

ife on Hilton Head Island revolves around the water, and few places offer so opportunities to Photomany by Joyce Harkins, Hilton Head Island Photography enjoy this liquid asset. From Broad Creek to the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, freshwater lagoons to brackish backwaters, you’re just moments away from a great day on the water.

LAUNCH & LAND

A perfect day on the water begins and ends at any of the Island’s many marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and ecotours, as well as signature restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Explore the famous candy-striped Lighthouse in Harbour Town, the Mediterranean charm of Shelter Cove Harbour, the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, the Key West atmosphere of Palmetto Bay Marina and the hidden charms of Broad Creek Marina, Skull Creek Marina and Hilton Head Harbor.

MAKE A SPLASH

Jump on a jet ski or waverunner and whiz across the water on an adventure around the Island, or try tubing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, kneeboarding and skurfing with a USCG-certified captain. It’s fast, fun and a sure way to keep your cool on sizzling summer days.

GET ON BOARD

The sport of choice for ancient Hawaiians and modern Hollywood hipsters, standup paddleboarding (SUP) is making waves in the Lowcountry. Easy to learn and a great workout, take a few lessons before heading out for a yoga class, nature tour, moonlight paddle, fireworks trip or race. Of course, thrill seekers can still catch waves on traditional surfboards, skim boards and boogie boards.

SET SAIL

Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, battle pirates on a swash-buckling adventure, catch the seasonal fireworks displays from the water, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat and play your way.

PADDLE AWAY

Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments, or your fishing pole to catch a delicious dinner.

GO WILD

A natural setting for adventure, discover the wild side of the Island and the amazing array of animals that call it home. Depart on a dolphin-watching trip, shark-fishing excursion, alligator adventure, turtle talk and walk or bird-watching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.

FLY HIGH

Soar hundreds of feet above the water on a parasailing trip, get a bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure ziplining through majestic oaks and pine trees at water’s edge.

REEL FUN

Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep sea or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots, drop a line from a kayak or into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing to see what you can catch.

HIT THE BEACH

The Island’s 12 miles of hardpacked, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, in any season. Rent a bike, splash in the surf, fly a kite, build castles in the sand or simply relax on a rented beach chair under an umbrella with a good book in hand.

WHAT to KNOW

on sland I d a e ilton H

H

Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They’re everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic—don’t stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it’s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don’t change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.

hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

FAMILY Memories By Mark Anders, Head Pickleball Pro, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort On Sunday, June 9 — after a very challenging day threatened by rain, including a brief downpour 30 minutes before the clinic was set to begin — 24 members of the Egan clan from Cincinnati, Ohio, arrived for two hours of pickleball instruction and round robin play. The age range was anchored by Trevor on the low end, who proudly announced that he was “six and three-quarters,” and the family patriarch Rick Egan, who was, let’s say, on the mature end.

coordination drills and stroke mechanics, including the all-important serve, while Sandy and I worked with the young adults and seniors. There was some serious athletic talent on the courts that night, with all groups progressing quickly.

With the assistance of two of our finest instructors, Sandy Donaldson and Nancy Clouse, the team at Palmetto Dunes Pickleball Center squeegeed the courts and, with the help of some remaining sunshine and wind, we began play at 6:30 p.m. Nancy corralled the kids and worked on hand-eye

Many thanks to the Egan Family for a fun night!

hiltonhead.com

This was the first family event we have hosted under the lights at the Pickleball Center. Surely, the Egan family would readily agree that an evening outing was the perfect time to learn and play pickleball. We look forward to more family groups coming together to learn this fun sport and creating memories that last a lifetime. For more information, visit PalmettoDunes.com/ Activities. To reserve a spot in a clinic or round robin, call (866) 242-3169.

July 2019 Island Events 83

Hilton Head O F N I R Island INSIDE NEVER feed the alligators! Death, serious injury and jail time are just a few of the reasons we don't feed the alligators. Alligators become aggressive when they think food is coming. Feeding an alligator once from a distance can ruin it for someone else.

Offshore shark fishing ONLY!

Of course we don't want to attract sharks to swimming areas. The law prohibits baiting or fishing for shark from the beach and 400 yards or fewer from any shore. There is also no fishing in swimming areas or from the beaches anytime during daylight hours between April and September.

DON’T mess with the natives

The law protects beach-dwelling sea creatures. Hurting, bothering or even picking up the live ones could result in a fine of $500. This includes sand dollars, conch shells and especially turtles!

Speaking of sea turtles, here's what you need to know: NEVER INTERFERE with a sea turtle!

The endangered loggerhead turtles lay their eggs in nests on HHI's beaches. It's important that tourists and locals alike do their best to keep their impact minimal. Don't get close to them, shine lights on them, touch them or their eggs, feed them or get anywhere near their nests. You could face up to a $15,000 fine and even jail time!

NO LIGHTS on or near the beach!

Nighttime on the beach is a crucial time for baby turtles and any lights that can be seen from the beach can be fatal to these little guys. When they hatch, they must head directly to the ocean or die. Artificial lights (even flashlights or the flash from a camera!) confuse them, and can cause them to head in the opposite direction. Nesting season is between May and the end of October. If any of your house lights can be seen from the beach, they need to be off or invisible from the beach by 10 p.m. during this time.

If you see something that looks amiss, CALL THE EXPERTS! If a sea turtle is injured or dead, or you see a nest that has clearly been tampered with or someone is actively bothering with a nest or a turtle, call the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources at (800) 922-5431.

LEAVE the beach the way you found it!

So your sandcastle is your masterpiece. Understood. But this is literally life or death for these turtles. An obstacle on the beach can cause a mama sea turtle to go back to the ocean instead of laying her eggs. Anything left on the beach that doesn't belong there can cause problems for both mama and baby turtles, so grab every last piece of your gear and trash and fill and smooth any holes you've made.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

RULES FOR THE ROAD: • Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Please do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. 86 Island Events July 2019

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the paths. Be courteous, alert and predictable.

od presents an added challenge when catching the big kings — having enough line on the reel to withstand the initial run or two of the big kings. More than once, I have been “spooled” by big kings, especially using light tackle, losing all the line and the fish before we could get the anchor up and chase the fish. Recently, I ran across Canyon spinning reels and was intrigued by the amazing line capacity and drag. The Salt 4000 holds 450 yards of 30-pound braid and sports 39 pounds of drag!

The SmokerKing Article and photo by Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

This month, cast a line for king mackerel.

T

here’s no sweeter sound to an angler’s ears than the scream of a reel’s drag, especially the scorching punishment dealt by a summer favorite: the king mackerel. A “smoker” king, one that weighs between 20 and 60 pounds, will strip a hundred yards of line off the reel in the blink of an eye. These silver torpedoes are built for speed and are made of pure muscle, presenting challenges that are unique when it comes to tackle. Slow or “bump” trolling is one technique for mackerel fishing. Live bait, such as menhaden, are pulled behind the boat very slowly, most of the time just bumping the engine in and out of gear so as not to drag too hard. This method works well for covering more territory. One of my favorite techniques is to anchor near a structure and chum hard. This meth96 Island Events July 2019

Perfect for kings, I thought, and set off to the reef to test them out. Conditions were perfect, and calm seas and a lively ocean greeted us as we anchored near the structure. The chum hadn’t been out too long before the rod bucked wildly and the smooth drag of the Canyon started singing and kept singing. At that point, we would have been frantically trying to bring the anchor in and we still had half a spool of line left! The drag was smooth as silk. We ended the day with nine big kings and never once came close to being spooled. A subsequent trip with some of my favorite anglers — Cooper, Ryan and Chris — produced the nice “smoker” in the picture. That fish made five or six searing runs, and the Canyon reel performed flawlessly. I highly recommend Canyon reels, which are made in New Jersey, if you enjoy big fish on light tackle. This summer on Hilton Head Island, the king bite is on! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. The Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers, features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. SURVIVAL GUIDE Here are a few timely tips to stay safe when exploring nature on Hilton Head Island. By Anneliza Itkor, Outside Hilton Head There are few things more glorious than spending a day outside on Hilton Head Island. However, Hilton Head is home to a few small critters that can put a big dent in your summer fun. Here are some simple tips that can help everyone enjoy an adventurous and safe summer. We are not the only creatures that enjoy our lovely, warm waters and soft, silky sand. Jellyfish and stingrays are abundant in the Atlantic Ocean and in tidal creeks during the summer months. Fortunately, a few easy additions to your beach bag can minimize the discomfort of an unfortunate encounter with one of these creatures. For a jellyfish sting, bring along a bottle of vinegar. If someone gets stung, rinse the affected area with vinegar for 30 seconds. The high acid content helps to neutralize the venom. To avoid being punctured by a stingray barb, learn the Hilton Head shuffle! By shuffling your feet through the sand, stingrays can sense your approach and will get out of your way. However, if you are unfortunate enough to step directly on a ray and they employ their barb in defense, it can be very painful. Packing a small plastic tub (large enough for a foot) and a thermos of hot

water can keep the injured person more comfortable, while being driven to the emergency room or Urgent Care facility. Pour the hot water (be careful it isn’t so hot as to scald) in the tub and immerse the punctured foot into the water. The pain will virtually disappear within 30 seconds and, as long as the water stays hot, the pain will be kept at bay until the venom metabolizes. It’s still important to visit the doctor right away, as antibiotics and sometimes a tetanus shot are needed to prevent infection. When kayaking and paddleboarding our waterways, it’s important to know that the biggest threat in our waters is, ironically, one of the smallest animals. The Lowcountry oysters that populate our waters by the billions present a serious but avoidable danger. Since oysters have no arms, legs, teeth, fins or claws, the leading edge of their shell is their only defense mechanism, and it’s as sharp as a razor. The good news? Oysters are also immobile, so good common sense will keep you safe. Oysters tend to grow in reefs, or rakes, and can be found in and around the cordgrass or in mounds in shallower waters. At low tide, they are generally easy to spot and avoid. However, in a mid-tide, they can be hidden just below the surface. It’s smart to talk to locals who know the waters well and learn the safest places to paddleboard and kayak. Don’t paddleboard in waters that have oyster beds lurking, and don’t walk barefoot in marsh waters or along the banks of tidal creeks and rivers. Should someone cut themselves on oyster shells, a trip to the doctor is highly recommended, as there is a high risk of infection. The guides at Outside Hilton Head are wellversed in leading fun and safe adventures in all kinds of Island settings. Visit outsidehiltonhead.com to explore all the exciting ways we can get you Outside! To book an outing with Outside Hilton Head, call (843) 686-6996 or visit www.outsidehiltonhead.com.

Make Fireworks On The Golf Course This Month Refine your swing on the green in July. By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

Golf has fireworks! It’s an exhilarating sport with moments of spectacular celebration.

When, you might ask, will these bright lights happen? When you: 1. Achieve a goal you never have conquered. For example, learning to hit a golf ball up in the air at the age of three. At Palmetto Dunes, we have childrens’ golf clubs for your use in our Lil' Swingers Class. 2. Watch your struggling teenager say, “I can do this!” with a big smile. 3. Do something you thought you could never enjoy. For instance, enjoy a 2½-hour golf game talking with friends, losing weight and making a long putt to par a hole. 4. Discover you have the ability to play nine holes of effortless, social golf with your lady friends and then go have lunch and talk. I invite you to attend the Ladies Only Class. 5. Share a personal victory with family or a friend. It will give you encouragement to overcome other obstacles. 6. Experience efficiency, purity and power in one motion, and it results in a long golf shot over the water that does exactly what you want it to do. Don’t miss the Power and Distance Class. July 2019 Island Events 104

7. Know your child, who wants to play high school and college golf, is playing with and learning from a former PGA Tour Player and now PGA Teacher of the Year. We offer playing lessons for kids of all ages.

At Palmetto Dunes, we offer the following golf classes and provide equipment for players of all skill levels: • Family Golf Class • Beginners Class • Back to Basics • Golf Mobility • Mental Golf Workshop Reservations are required. Please call (843) 785-1138 or (800) 827-3006. Remember that golf is a game for a lifetime. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Bring someone close to you and learn to love golf. Enjoy every moment on the golf course this month. I hope to see you out on the green! A former PGA Tour pro and member of the local golf Hall of Fame, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?”, a free clinic and demonstration, every Monday at 4 p.m. (843) 785-1138, (800) 827-3006 or www.palmettodunes.com. hiltonhead.com
