Do You Know The Way To Cardinal Road? Fun-seekers take note! If you haven’t been to Cardinal Road yet, you’re in for a treat.

By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery “Brewing” for over a decade, a fun new vibe has arrived on Cardinal Road. Here, a winery, a distillery and a brewery have sprung up, remaking this area into a novel destination for fun-seekers. It is a walkable three-stop-shop to taste, learn about the creation of wine, beer and spirits and enjoy!

wines from fresh grapes purchased from renowned vineyards, while also experimenting with the creation of unique wines made from local fruits. However, Hilton Head Island’s zoning laws (rightly) offered few opportunities for this type of operation.

Located near the airport amongst essential businesses, Cardinal Road is still a cog in the wheel of Hilton Head Island’s small business scene. These local trades make a big difference in the quality of life on Hilton Head: exterior and interior design services uphold the unique character of the Island, while behind-the-scenes services ensure that your vacation spaces are clean, free of pests and exquisitely landscaped. This is also where you’d go to fix your car, bike or computer.

Island Winery finally found a home on Cardinal Road. Then, in 2015, the folks at Hilton Head Distillery also found Cardinal Road an ideal location for their venture and, to our delight, set up shop right next door! They were looking to create signature, locally crafted products, and they’ve done it. Hilton Head Distillery offers educational tours about the distilling process, and tastings of their delicious products, which include vodka, gin, aged and flavored whiskey and rum.

Cardinal Road’s transformation began in 2006 when my husband and I, who at the time owned a winery in NJ, decided to open a second in our favorite vacation spot — Hilton Head Island. We wanted to apply our successful formula of making classic

The year 2015 was a big one for us, as Hilton Brewing Company, a popular Island destination for over a decade, decided to relocate their business as well, and settled in just a few doors down. They recently added an outdoor dining area with TVs

WHAT to KNOW on

nd

sla I d a e H Hilton Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They’re everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic—don’t stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it’s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don’t change lanes while in the roundabout.

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day hiltonhead.com

HOROSCOPE July 2020 ARIES Relationships will be tricky this month. Show your friends some emotional support, but stay out of family arguments. Focus on your finances. You may experience buyer’s remorse after a major purchase. TAURUS Indulge your wild side,

and take up a friend on their spontaneous invitation. A Libra will need your full attention and understanding when they change the conversation to a serious topic. Mind your stubborn nature, and things will turn out fine.

GEMINI Go with your gut this

month. Careful deliberation is a long process that cannot be used on all offers. Prepare for your love to be tested with challenges. This will be an especially rocky time for relationships involving a Scorpio.

CANCER Kick off your shoes and head to the shore for some relaxation. A financial windfall is on the horizon. Your significant other, particularly Libra partners, will leave you smitten and optimistic. LEO Come to terms with your current situation and realize how lucky you are. This realization will increase your productivity in the workplace and your happiness in life. Take pride in your work, but do not let your confidence distract you from saving a failing friendship. VIRGO Patience through the bad times will be rewarded with peace. An event will spark excitement and some thoughtful planning will make the special event even more magical. Prepare for some conflict with coworkers this month. 32 Island Events July 2020

LIBRA You will receive a good surprise from a family member. Don’t question it. Simply enjoy your gift. Keep a period of exercise in your daily routine. Maintain independence in your work. SCORPIO A former lover will try to romance you, but remain true to your present relationship. Prevent future awkward advances by leaving the past in the past. Look forward, and prepare for financial woes during the height of the summer’s heat. SAGITTARIUS Keep an open mind. When your superiority noticeably clouds your judgment, your imperfect yet true self will be revealed. Count this as a life lesson. Take this newfound self-knowledge as an opportunity to grow and improve, not wallow over previous actions. CAPRICORN Single ladies and gentlemen, guard your hearts. A romance with a Scorpio could develop this month. Take a risk on a last-minute invitation, and you may receive a fun surprise. AQUARIUS Stand up for yourself this month. Family members will abuse your good nature. A professional opportunity will arise. Do not be afraid to showcase your talents or present yourself as a candidate for advancement. Luck will be on your side. PISCES Differences in personality will plague your friendships. Some cannot understand or keep up with your mood swings, but others will relate to them easily. nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. Thousands of Years Ago Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

1663 Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”

1861-1865 The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Late 1950s

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character. 38 Island Events July 2020

1520s Conquistadors explored the area.

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

Post Civil War - 1956 After the Civil War, the Island's population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Today

Fraser’s legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly sea island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm – all in one unforgettable destination. hiltonhead.com

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

RULES FOR THE ROAD: • Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Please do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. 40 Island Events July 2020

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the paths. Be courteous, alert and predictable.

The American Alligator By Kathleen McMenamin Vicars, Master Naturalist

A

merican Alligators are ancient creatures. They have changed very little biologically in over 150 million years, and were able to avoid extinction 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs met their demise. During the mid-1900s, they were almost hunted to extinction, but today can be found in abundance throughout the Southeastern United States, and are considered a species of little concern. Great swimmers, alligators live in freshwater habitats such as ponds, lakes, rivers and swamps. They are often seen in the water or sunning on the sides of ponds and irrigational canals around Hilton Head. It is very uncommon to see them in saltwater, but they can be found there on a few occasions. Alligators will enter saltwater to cure algae and bacteria irritations on their skin, and may move through saltwater as they look for new habitats or mates. They have also been known to go into the saltwater to hunt for food and then quickly return to their freshwater homes. Most alligators are scared of humans; they will quickly hide underwater if they feel threatened. However, they are wild animals and can move very fast, so it is best to stay far away from them. Alligators are cold blooded; this means that their body temperature is determined by the temperature outside. During the winter months, their bodies shut down, they don’t eat for long periods of time and go into a dormancy until the weather warms up. Their body temperature must be at least 60°F for them to digest food and this explains why alligator sightings are more common during the summer months. The best time to go looking for alligators during the summer is in the morning and evening.

56 Island Events July 2020

Similar to humans, they can overheat, and prefer to spend hot days in the water or in their dens. Alligators can grow up to 15 feet long and can weigh up to 1,000 pounds, with males generally growing larger than females. At birth, alligator babies are six inches long, and continue to grow up to a foot a year until they reach maturity. Around the age of seven, alligators begin to breed, and their growth rate slows down. An easy way to determine the length of an alligator is to count the inches between the nose bump and eye bump; that number translates into feet. They can live to be 50 years old. Once an alligator has reached maturity, it will find an area to claim as its territory. Territories usually consist of a dominant male and a number of different females, each living independently. They will then begin to build a den. Dens are open-air cavities in the ground, usually with an underwater entrance. The decaying material in the ground helps to keep their body temperature regulated in both the summer and winter. Alligators are definitely an apex predator. They will eat any animal, dead or alive, that they can get their jaws onto. Instead of chewing their food, they crunch down on it a few times and swallow it whole; this is partly why it takes them so long to digest their food. During the summer months, alligators eat about once every two weeks, depending on the size of the meal. The larger the meal, the less likely they will need to eat again in the near future. New tactics, old friends and a beautiful catch.

By Captain Miles Altman, Bay Runner Fishing Charters

O

ne of summer’s top targets for the Hilton Head charter fishing fleet and recreational anglers alike is the Spanish mackerel. These roaming marauders of the local waters are sleek, streamlined predators that forage on the bait schools around the sandbars and reefs. With an olive green back that fades to iridescent silver sides, and round golden spots that run along the body, it’s a beautiful fish. Like all mackerel, it has a forked tail that screams speed, and it’s armed with a mouth full of teeth, making it a very efficient predator. “I’ll be on Hilton Head next week and would like to charter you to do a little fishing,” drawled Doyle Evans from Oklahoma. Doyle and I had become friends years before, but had never pulled off a fishing trip together. “How ‘bout some fast action, big fish on light tackle?” I asked. “Let’s do it,” he replied. We departed on a fine morning, sunshine and calm seas before us, as we headed for a near58 Island Events July 2020

Traditionally, Spanish are caught trolling, usually with a long leader and a small spoon such as the Clarkspoon, some weight or a small planer in front of the leader. Flocks of seagulls and terns divebombing on the baitfish, and the carnage wreaked on them from the mackerel schools below, makes location easier. The spoons are then trolled around the fringe of the school so as not to spook them, but that day we changed it up a little. We dropped the anchor alongside the reef and deployed the chum bag. The water was clear and the bait schools were soon evident behind the boat as they swam up. I put a live menhaden on a small treble that had another “stinger” treble a few inches behind it. Doyle dropped it ten feet behind the boat and the show started. A half-dozen Spanish blitzed the livey and the light Shakespeare Ugly Stik 12-lb. rod bent double as the drag sang on the reel. After several scorching runs, a nice 5-lb. Spanish hit the deck. “Like fishing in an aquarium!” exclaimed Doyle, grinning widely. And it was. We repeated this scenario again and again, sometimes dropping the bait right beside the boat, the high-speed Spanish coming from every direction, on the attack. It was a remarkable day with an old friend, and now, a great memory. Capt. Delightful Dolphin A creature you just have to see to believe! By Anneliza Itkor, Outside Hilton Head The Atlantic bottlenose dolphin is probably the #1 wildlife attraction that encourages visitors and locals alike to get out and explore our South Carolina tidal marsh environment. Their sheer size, some weighing in at as much as 1300 pounds, elicits gasps of delight as they surface next to a kayak, paddleboard or boat. And due to their social nature and intelligence, they continually amaze onlookers with their antics. These remarkable creatures also have some unique characteristics that may surprise you. Wow your family and friends with these fun facts! One of the most extraordinary things to consider about this small whale (Yep! They’re WHALES!), is that it NEVER stops moving. Because it has to come to the surface and breathe every 1-3 minutes, and as it has no natural buoyancy, from the moment it is born, a dolphin is in nonstop motion. This poses some interesting questions.

• How does a dolphin sleep? A dolphin’s brain (larger than the human brain) is split into two hemispheres just like ours. However, the two halves are not connected by a network of nerves like the human brain. This allows dolphins to shut down half their brain and let it rest, while the other half stays alert enough to bring them to the surface to breathe and keep an eye out for predators. It’s like sleeping with one eye open!

• How much does a dolphin need to eat if it is moving all the time? In constant motion, a dolphin has a monster metabolism. An average-sized, 440-pound dolphin needs to consume up to 33,000 calories a day! For you or I to get anywhere near that, we’d have to eat something like 500-600 chicken nuggets. That’s not on the menu for the dolphins, though, so they’ll devour around 50 pounds of fish, eel, squid and shrimp. PER DAY! 60 Island Events July 2020

One of the most extraordinary things about being on the water this time of year is the increased likelihood of spotting a mama dolphin with her calf. As extremely intelligent creatures, dolphins know that the healthiest time to deliver their babies is the spring and summer, when their little ones can begin their journey in warmer, better-stocked waters. When calves are born, they are about 3½ feet long and weigh in at around 30 pounds. They have a higher percentage of body fat to keep them more buoyant as they learn to swim, and they keep close to their mother. This enables them to take advantage of her “slipstream,” and mimic her motions for proper muscle development. A dolphin’s gestation period is 12 months, so this time of year is also ideal for witnessing fascinating mating behaviors. But to experience any of this up close, you must first get outside and on the water! Outside Brands offers all kinds of creative ways to see and learn more about our beloved Atlantic bottlenose. Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis, Outside is working hard to provide safe and enjoyable experiences. We are currently offering our regular shared programs, in addition to private versions of our most popular excursions. Be assured that the cleaning of all equipment and gear before and after each program is thorough, and that our guides’ top priority is safety. We’ve just barely scratched the surface of this amazing marine mammal with the informational tidbits above. Join us as we observe one of the ocean’s most dazzling residents in its natural habitat. You’ll be so glad you did! WHY GOLF

IS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE FOR

SUMMER 2020 By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

Four reasons to make golf your go-to game 1. The golf course is a safe place to exercise and socialize. Social distancing is easily maintained in golf, and golfers and staff are following strict protocols that protect us all. Palmetto Dunes Resort has proven to be a refuge of much-needed refreshment for many players and their families.

2. Getting absorbed in golf is a great way to escape. We have had some challenging days. For me, golf is the ultimate escape from them. When I'm absorbed in golf, my mind, will and emotions are focused on seeing the shot I desire to create. My visualization of this future shot then creates the proper physical feelings needed to perform it. I get totally absorbed in the experience and all of life’s difficulties are pushed out of my mind. Jack Nicklaus called this "going to the movies." When you go to the movies, you are in a dark room, focused on that movie, distracted from your cares and experiencing only what’s in front of you. I’ve learned to trust this place — my body follows suit and, hopefully, the ball goes where I’d like it to.

a more peaceful state of mind, as it engages all parts of the brain, and has been proven to decrease your heart rate and even slow the onset of dementia!

4. Golf can help to set you free. Our nation’s independence always makes me think about how golf as a recreational sport really does re-create those who play it. It offers freedom from fear, self-doubt, anxiety and physical limitations. It can even help to free us from the pain of broken relationships. With broad fairways, lush green trees and active wildlife, the golf course is a great place to refresh yourself in a safe environment. Leave your worries at home, get some exercise and expand your mindbody connection while surrounded by nature. Get out of the house with your family, and teach or learn new skills. For these reasons and so many others, there really is no better time to get engaged in the game of golf.

Let the coaches at Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy lead you to a more profound golf game by:

• restoring joy to the frustrated or plateau- ing player • helping new golfers establish excellent habits • offering high-schoolers the chance to earn a college scholarship through golf • providing new challenges and victories for retirees • uplifting the depressed, injured or disabled

3. Golf can be healing.

...and so much more!

Sometimes, the best medicine of all is green grass, wide open skies, sunshine and fresh air. Luckily, the golf course has big doses of it all! Invite a friend to play, practice or learn golf with you. Bring someone you want to get to know better. Golf has a way of breaking down barriers and healing relationships. It is also physically restorative. When played properly, it will increase your balance, flexibility and stamina. It can also go a long way toward
