WELCOME TO
Hilton Head Island!
W
ith blooming azaleas, mild temperatures and lots of sunshine, March is a magical time here on the Lowcountry’s most celebrated island. Spring is finally here, the waters around the Island are warming and paddle boarding, kayaking, jet skiing and boating are all back on the menu, as well as golf, tennis, parasailing and much more. Part of what makes Hilton Head so special is that its pristine beaches, lush maritime forests, abundant wildlife, miles of trails, outdoor activities, exciting nightlife, worldclass dining and shopping are all located on an Island that from heel to toe is just 12 miles long! In this issue of Island Events, we talk about approaching the game of golf with Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy’s Doug Weaver, and Capt. Miles Altman of Bay Runner Fishing Charters remembers a Lowcountry fishing legend.
Be sure to take a look at our Dining, Shopping, Lodging and Activities listings, which will help guide you to some of the very best our little barrier Island has to offer. Keep tabs on the latest with our Calendar of Events and don’t miss a thing! As always, all of our “priceless” publications can be viewed online 24/7. For more on the treasures of the Lowcountry, head over to hiltonheadisland.com, hiltonhead. com, bluffton.com, savannah.com, daufuskieisland.com, sttsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com. We know we don’t need to tell you how special Hilton Head is, after all you’re here! We do encourage you to let the Island’s charm spirit you away from it all for a while. So kick off your shoes, throw off your worries and dust off your sense of adventure — the vacation you’ve always dreamt of is ahead of you!

HOROSCOPE ARIES
This past year has been steeped in solitude, but the coming one will be marked by its collaborative spirit. As we emerge from extended hibernation, we remember how others make us better. Don’t wait to partner up with those who bring out your best!
TAURUS Games are afoot this month. Get out there and have a good time, but remember not to engage in the plays that hurt others. Keep your eyes peeled for someone on the sidelines who may need some extra coaxing to jump in. GEMINI
Something’s got you floating this month, Gemini. Having your head in the clouds can really rouse the spirit, but remember the rest of us below. Beware a batch of details coming your way that you will need to heed — no skimming allowed.
CANCER You’ve recently had difficulties that led to a big change in perspective. Looking at your life from this new angle has yielded many insights, but it’s also scary. Keep your heart open, lean on loved ones and remember your strengths. LEO You may not realize how much you are like one (or both!) of your parents. This month, look into it and assess whether or not this is something that needs tweaking. Speaking of your parents, have you told them lately how much you appreciate them? VIRGO
You will find inspiration everywhere this month, and that creative energy is going to supercharge your enthusiasm. If you’re looking to be more productive than usual, you will need to laser focus your efforts. Prepping the stage for channeling this energy will make a major difference in output! 24 Island Events March 2021
MARCH 2021 LIBRA Someone in your orbit is faltering. Everyone can see it, but no one quite knows what to do about it. This month, ask. How can I help you do better or be happier or find some peace? This simple gesture will have far-reaching effects. SCORPIO
This month, you may find yourself eerily in line with someone you know well. Seize this opportunity to dig into the friendship and don’t be afraid to let your guard down. Beware of saying too much about someone you both love — only share what you would be willing to say to this other person’s face.
SAGITTARIUS
You’ve been so steadfast in your goals, and plowed ahead despite many obstacles. Just because others aren’t aware of the trail you blazed doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be celebrated. This month, take the time to honor your hard-won victories!
CAPRICORN
There are a few tasks you’ve been avoiding for a while, and it’s time to step up and just get them done; you will feel so much better! This month, you will finally begin to see the results of some of the seeds you’ve sewn. Keep nurturing them.
AQUARIUS
Are you truly ready to live your best life? Most experts agree that this moment is the dawn of the Age of Aquarius. Consider your 2021 New Year’s resolutions — can truly committing to them launch you into a healthier and happier place?
PISCES This past year has been tough for many. Those who seem unscathed are likely still working through stress or trauma. Keep this in mind as you interact with friends, family and coworkers. Do your best not to take things personally. It may not be about you at all. hiltonhead.com

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.
Beach Marker Signs:
Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.
Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com
Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.
Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com

Neptune K Statue
at Shelter Cove Harbour he towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a largerthan-life sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.
T
Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge. When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot-wide base, the numbers indicate the precise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figurative sundial, the statue was originally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey, and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measurements before the one-ton statue was installed, ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time. They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star. An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights generations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. Stop by to see King Neptune in person and to experience a true Hilton Head Island icon.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
please move off the pathway. • Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped,
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

WHAT TO KNOW
On Hilton Head Island
Alcohol:
Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.
Roundabouts:
You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They're everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic— don't stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it's even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don't change lanes while in the roundabout.
Beaches:
There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day
ACTIVITIES #A. Visit our bike rental shop to rent beach bike cruisers, mountain bikes, helmets and our large assortment of bike rental accessories, which will provide many hours of fun outdoor activity throughout the Island. FOXES By Kathleen McMenamin Vicars, Master Naturalist

F
oxes have been found in folklore and fables for hundreds of years. They are represented as cunning, wise, adaptable and at times treacherous. All of these attributes make them a well-fitted resident of our South Carolina Lowcountry.
The red fox, Vulpes vulpes, is the largest of the true foxes and is found in many areas of the world. It is thought that their species moved from Asia to the Americas by crossing the Bering Land Bridge as far back as 300,000 years ago. Their fur is most commonly red with a white underbelly, but silver, black and crosscoloring are occasionally found in the species. The most distinguishing mark is their white-tipped tail. They can weigh between 7 and 14 pounds, and will reach lengths of 3 to 4 feet long. Males are known as dogs, females are vixens and babies are kits. They communicate through vocalizations, facial expressions and scent marking. There are 28 known vocalizations used by red foxes. Red foxes can be found throughout South Carolina. They tend to stay near agricultural areas, pastures, mixed vegetation, woods and, at times, suburban zones. As solitary animals, they establish ranges. At times, a single male and up to two females may occupy the same range. They will occasionally fight over territory, especially if food is involved. Individual foxes create a main or natal den that will be 15 to 20 feet long. Foxes will use other animals’ abandoned dens as emergency burrows for quick escapes, and often have several in their territories. They are mainly nocturnal animals, being heard more than seen at night. On Hilton Head, they are most commonly spotted at sunrise or sunset. Red foxes are omnivorous. Insects and carrion make up the majority of their diet. They are known to hunt 44 Island Events March 2021
In the South Carolina Lowcountry, red foxes begin to pair up for breeding in late fall and early winter. The pair will share a den until the young are born. Gestations last up to 53 days with vixens bearing between four to eight kits. The kits stay in the den for the first month of their life, with their eyes opening after 10 days. Nursing may last up to eight weeks, after which the mated pair will bring regurgitated food and then live rodents for hunting practice. The kits will stay with the vixen until fall. At times, young females stay with their mother to care for the new litter. Red foxes reach their maturity at 10 months old. The oldest red fox documented in the wild was 12 years old. Red fox populations tend to stay consistent, but do have a small decline over time. Kits can be hunted by owls and hawks. Adults and young are susceptible to car accidents. Fox populations are also influenced by rabies and mange outbreaks. It is said that red foxes contract rabies more often than other animals, leading up to two human bite-related cases a year. There is worry for the red fox population, as coyotes move in and take over their hunting territories. s always, in late February and March the fishing is best near offshore reefs where the sheepshead congregate. Sheepshead are members of the snapper family and are highly desirable table fare. But they are quite a challenge to catch — if you are skilled enough or lucky enough to even set the hook — and sheeps put up quite a fight. Armed with human-like teeth, sheepshead easily crush the bait of choice (fiddler crabs), sucking the essence right off the hook, and leaving you with nothing but crab husk before you even know what hit you.

GOLF for MORE FUN in 2021 By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy
Spring is here on Hilton Head Island and the azaleas are blooming! If you have a golfer in your life, you know what that means: golfers gonna golf. But what about the rest of us? I’m here to tell you that this game is not just for the most committed players — it’s for everyone! Below are some tips I’ve compiled for anyone who is curious about trying golf.
1. Approach the game with “play” in mind.
Golf has a lot of rules and mechanics, and it can be easy to find yourself intimidated. Don’t be! Heed the parameters, but don’t strive for perfection; it will make you crazy. If you can remember that this is supposed to be fun, and to focus on staying relaxed and light-hearted, your body will perform on a subconscious level with very little thought or tension. This is the zone you want to be in.
2. Don’t be afraid to test the waters. Now is actually a really good time to try your hand at golf. This is a sport with social distancing baked right into it, as the natural safety boundaries of golf meet today’s social distancing requirements. The open expanse of the green has plenty of room for you to be with friends and family, and staff are cleaning the equipment daily.
3. Work backwards.
We have a saying in golf: “Build your game from the hole to the tee and find victory.” First, you learn to 48 Island Events March 2021
Photo by Joyce Harkins, Hilton Head Island Photography, Inc.
putt the ball into the hole. Then, you learn chipping from just off the green. Next is pitching, which is the high, short shot (20-40 yards) you will need to land softly on the green. Finally, you will learn to execute that elusive but elegant full swing, where you may go 40 or more yards. Don’t worry — you will fall in love with the game long before you get to the really challenging part!
4. Find a coach.
Fundamentals take time, but if you learn them right, you will find golf much more enjoyable to play, no matter the level. Don’t take it from me, this is straight from Jack Nicklaus himself! North Carolina and South Carolina PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?”, a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Volunteer for a free lesson and some will win prizes! Call (843) 338-9598 or (800) 827-3006 or go to www.palmettodunes.com for more information. hiltonhead.com

HILTON HEAD HISTORY
Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors. 1520s
Thousands of Years Ago Native Americans came to hunt and fish.
1663 Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton's Headland.”
1861-1865 The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North's blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.
Late 1950s
Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island's distinctive character. 50 Island Events March 2021
Conquistadors explored the area.
17th, 18th & 19th Centuries For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.
Post Civil War - 1956 After the Civil War, the Island's population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.
Today Fraser's legacy lives on in Hilton Head Island’s balance of commerce with green spaces, golf courses with wild places and thoroughfares with biking trails. Recently voted the Best Island in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure readers for the third time, this family-friendly sea island seamlessly combines luxury, adventure and charm -- all in one unforgettable destination. hiltonhead.com
