Seeing

RED Red wines offer a wide range of flavors, textures and experiences.

By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery If you’ve ever wanted to explore red wine, but didn’t know where to begin, here are some tips that can help. Since there are thousands of different red wines, it can be daunting to try finding your preferences. However, the process can be simplified by understanding that most wine flavors depend on four basic attributes: acid, body, tannin and alcohol. It’s also important to note the difference between Old World and New World wine styles. In general, Old World-style refers to wine produced in European countries where there are tighter restrictions on how the wines must be made. These wines tend to be lower in alcohol, lighter in body and feature more restrained fruit flavors. New World-style wine comes from countries that used to be European colonies, typically with warmer climates. They tend to be fuller in body, higher in alcohol and have bolder expressions of fruit. By heading to your local wine shop and trying the following wines, hopefully you can get a better understanding of acid, tannin, body and alcohol, and find a red wine that you like:

Pinot Noir, preferably Old World-style, is the wine to help you isolate and understand acidity, since it is low in tannin and body. Usually light in color, Pinot Noir has an aroma reminiscent of tart red fruits, such as cherries and cranberries. An Old World-style variety will have muted fruit flavors that allow the bright acidity to shine through. If you enjoy this light fruity wine, you may also like Lambrusco, Gamay and Grenache. 16 Island Events May 2019

Malbec is a great choice to help you under-

stand body, because it’s a full-bodied wine with medium levels of tannin and acidity. Body describes the texture of a wine, and a full-bodied wine’s texture will coat your mouth and linger. A New World-style Malbec from Argentina, Chile or Australia really showcases the benefits of body, as you will surely note the bold berry and plum flavors as they linger on your tongue. If you like Malbec, you might try Syrah and French Rhone Blends.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the most popular high-tannin wine. Tannin is the quality that makes a wine taste dry and allows it to be age-worthy. It’s also one reason why some don’t enjoy red wine. When tannin levels are too high, the drying sensation can be overwhelming. However, over time, tannins soften and add a pleasant, complex dimension to a wine. Old World wines typically need more aging time for tannins to balance out. Carmenere and Tempranillo are other great examples of world-class, high-tannin wines. Zinfandel is typically a high-alcohol wine. Alcohol levels in wine range from 11% to 15%, with wines over 13.5% considered to be high alcohol. Almost all high-alcohol wines are from the New World, where hot temperatures allow the sugar levels to soar as the fruit ripens. High alcohol greatly increases the viscosity and makes the wine feel heavy in the mouth, while carrying the bold fruit aromas to our senses as the alcohol evaporates. Most wines from hot regions of California and Australia are high in alcohol. The perfect bottle of hand-crafted artisan wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Rd. Wine by the glass, cheese platters and $5 tastings are available Monday-Saturday from 12:30-5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or www.islandwinery.com. hiltonhead.com

Life on Hilton Head Island revolves around the water and few places offer so many opportunities to enjoy this liquid asset. From Broad Creek to the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, freshwater lagoons to brackish backwaters, you’re just moments away from a great day on the water.

Launch & Land

A perfect day on the water begins and ends at any of the Island’s many marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and eco-tours, as well as signature restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Explore the famous candystriped lighthouse in Harbour Town, the Mediterranean charm of Shelter Cove Harbour, the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, the Key West atmosphere of Palmetto Bay Marina and the hidden charms of Broad Creek Marina, Skull Creek Marina and Hilton Head Harbor.

Make a Splash

Jump on a jet ski or waverunner and whiz across the water on an adventure around the Island or try tubing, wakeboarding, water-skiing, kneeboarding and skurfing with a USCG-certified captain. It’s fast, fun and a sure way to keep your cool on sizzling summer days.

Get on Board

The sport of choice for ancient Hawaiians and modern Hollywood hipsters, standup paddleboarding (SUP) is making waves in the Lowcountry. Easy to learn and a great workout, take a few lessons

before heading out for a yoga class, nature tour, moonlight paddle, fireworks trip or race. Of course, thrill seekers can still catch waves on traditional surfboards, skim boards and boogie boards.

Set Sail

Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, battle pirates on a swash-buckling adventure, catch the seasonal fireworks displays from the water, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat and play your way.

Paddle Away

Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team-building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments or your fishing pole to catch a delicious dinner.

Go Wild

A natural setting for adventure, discover the wild side of the Island and the amazing array of animals that call it home. Depart on a dolphin watching trip, shark fishing excursion, alligator adventure, turtle talk and walk or bird watching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.

Fly High

Soar hundreds of feet above the water on a parasailing trip, get a bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure ziplining through majestic oaks and pine trees at water’s edge.

Reel Fun

Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep sea or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots, drop a line from a kayak or into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing to see what you can catch.

Hit the Beach

The Island’s 12 miles of hard-packed, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, in any season. Rent a bike, splash in the surf, fly a kite, build castles in the sand or simply relax on a rented beach chair under an umbrella with a good book in hand.

Horoscope May 2019 ARIES Follow your heart this month. In the pursuit of your passion, wear those difficulties like a badge of honor and keep envisioning your final destination. Some of your "busy work" may fall through the cracks, but keep forging ahead.

LIBRA When was the last time you took stock of your life? Take the time to reflect upon what you’re doing right and wrong in life. Stay close to the center of your circle of influence, and you'll be amazed at the positive ripple effects.

TAURUS Consider what you bring to your relationships. Authenticity is important, but so is hope. Try letting go of worry this month, and see what happens. The person you've been working up the nerve to approach just may reach out to you first.

SCORPIO You will have an opportunity to share some juicy gossip about someone close to you this month, and you need to tread carefully. Consider saying only what you would say to their face.

GEMINI You will be a trusted confidant to a dear friend towards the end of the month. Be a sounding board, reflect and do your best not to jump to conclusions.

SAGITTARIUS Take the time to travel this month. If you're stuck in a rut, break out of it! Change up your commute, or some of your routines. Make an effort to look on the bright side of life. It will do wonders for your spirit!

cial pinch this month. Take another look at where your money goes and determine necessary spending. You may find what you've been looking for in a nearby green space you have all but forgotten.

CAPRICORN The mountain goat is tenacious and stoic, but not known for its flexibility. This month, practice being more open-minded and resilient. You may have to concede some ground in the short-term, but you will make significant gains in the long-term.

LEO Don’t miss the opportunity to take the perspective of others into consideration this month. The sheer force of your personality is mighty, but beware of steam-rolling everyone else with the weight of it.

AQUARIUS You’re carrying some things around that are weighing you down. Isn't it time you let them go? If they are not serving you, release the burden. You’ll feel so much better and will have a fresh outlook on life.

VIRGO A loved one has been taking advantage of you. Call it like you see it. The dazzle of a nearby Libra will inspire you to turn up the pizazz this month. The experience will reveal something in yourself that you thought was long gone.

PISCES This will be a month of self-reflection. Lean into it and really take stock of where you are and where you’re headed. Try your hand at a game you've never played before, and prepare yourself for surprising results.

Pickleball Happenings By Mark Anders, Head Pickleball Pro at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

For those who have not been to Hilton Head Island since last summer, you will notice some big changes at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis and Pickleball Center. We have expanded our facility to include eight additional fully dedicated pickleball courts, bringing our total number of pickleball courts to 16 — all of which are lighted for night play. The highlight of our programming remains the pro-supervised morning pickleball round robin, where all 16 courts are utilized. These popular events challenge players at every skill level with competitive play. Players are grouped by skill level, and the pro rotates players to ensure that everyone is competing at their skill level. The round robin is a great way to meet other pickleball players who are visiting the Island in a fun, social environment. Pickleball round robins are held every morning, seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to noon. Beginner clinics are offered for anyone looking for an introduction to pickhiltonhead.com

leball, and advanced clinics are available for players who want to fine-tune their game (must be over the age of 13 to participate). Reservations are encouraged. The Palmetto Dunes Pickleball Club is another great way to improve your game by playing more frequently at a reduced member rate. Monthly memberships are available for $25 for individuals and $40 for families. Memberships are available for longer periods as well. Check out the comments by fellow pickleball players on TripAdvisor, Yelp or Google by searching Palmetto Dunes Tennis and Pickleball Center. Hope to see you on the courts soon! For more information, visit www.PalmettoDunes.com/Activities. To reserve a spot in a clinic or round robin, call (866) 242-3169.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

RULES FOR THE ROAD: • Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Please do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. 60 Island Events May 2019

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the paths. Be courteous, alert and predictable.

H

eralds of spring, the highly anticipated arrival of cobia by local fishermen marks the beginning of the season.

These big, brown battlers have often been confused as sharks when seen swimming on the surface of the water. They will definitely raise your pulse when pitching a bait, as they often nose the presentation only to turn away uninterested. Growing up to 100 pounds, cobia offer great sport and are known as true tackle-busters. This year, our inshore waters will be closed again to harvesting cobia during the month of May, as they have been for the last few seasons. The Broad River, north of Hilton Head, used to be one of the best spots in the country for cobia fishing, but with explosive numbers of local and out-of-state anglers putting incredible pressure on the fishery, the stocks declined to alarming numbers. The days of fishing the river for cobia have declined woefully. Hopefully, we see some signs of recovery this year. Fortunately, the offshore stocks have been plentiful, it seems, and have been deemed a separate group by marine biologists. Even so, measures are being taken to preserve the stocks there before they suffer the same 68 Island Events May 2019

fate as their inshore cousins. Averaging 30 to 40 pounds, the tasty fish yields plenty of delicious filets, and the current daily allotment is certainly more than enough for anyone’s needs. Hopefully more anglers will practice good conservation and release more fish. Offshore reefs are often covered these days by a large number of boats chumming and fishing live bait in hopes of hooking these excellent game fish. The human population explosion is definitely evident in these onceremote spots that have now turned into “boating parking lots.” We hope to have a good cobia season this year. Once again, I encourage all anglers to practice good conservation and, even more so, good manners. Let’s preserve our fishery for future generations and model some integrity and morals for them as well! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. The Finatic boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers, features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Contact Miles at (843) 290-6955 to book an unforgettable inshore or offshore charter fishing trip, departing from Shelter Cove Marina. hiltonhead.com

The G LORIOUS G A T O R Alligators play a key role in the lowcountry ecosystem. By Anneliza Itkor, Outside Hilton Head With the arrival of May, Hilton Head Island’s high season officially kicks into full gear. The island is abuzz with visitors eager to explore all that is wild and beautiful. With one exception. The American alligator that graces the shores of our many freshwater lagoons seems to be almost universally terrifying to those who aren’t familiar with this unique species. Perhaps if we take a closer look at the gator and reveal some of its weird and wonderful characteristics, fear might be replaced by fascination. Alligators are part of the crocodilian order, a class of animals that evolved about 80 million years ago. Often referred to as “living fossils,” no one can deny how strongly the current-day alligator resembles its Cretaceous Period ancestors. Gators are cold-blooded, meaning they are ectothermic animals that cannot regulate their own body temperature. Instead, they assume the temperature of their surrounding environment. This is why you will often see them basking in the sun in an effort to warm themselves. Oddly, alligators are believed to continue growing throughout the entirety of their lives. Both the male and female reach maturity at about six feet. At this time, their growth begins to slow, ultimately becoming so slow that it is hardly detectable. Adult females average just over eight feet, while males average an impressive 11 feet. In the wild, alligators typically live for 35-50 years of age. Once mating is complete, the female will 70 Island Events May 2019

construct a nest of sticks and mud. She can then lay as many as 60 eggs in this nest in a single season. Interestingly, the temperature of the nest determines the sex of the hatchlings. Cooler temperatures will produce only females, while warmer temperatures produce only males. The female gator will fiercely protect her eggs and her young up to the age of three years, a trait that is unique to this particular cold-blooded critter. Juvenile gators have a series of sounds that will let mama know if they are hungry or if trouble is brewing. Alligators have even been observed bringing food to their young, a trait that, among reptiles, is unique to crocodilians. In essence, gators are great parents. While those teeth may be intimidating (and a gator grows new teeth to replace worn ones, going through as many as 3,000 teeth in a lifetime), alligator attacks on humans are rare and almost never fatal. Alligators generally target prey much smaller than humans, such as birds, snakes, turtles, water birds and small mammals. Unfortunately, increased human encroachment into gator habitats has raised the risk of conflict. Nevertheless, an unpleasant encounter with an alligator can easily be avoided. Never attempt to feed them, always observe alligators from a distance, keep pets and small children away from freshwater lagoons and don’t swim at night or in waters that might be inhabited by large alligators. Get out and explore The Savannah Wildlife Refuge with Outside Hilton Head and get a look at and learn more about these magnificent creatures. Visit outsidesav.com to book your adventure today! MAY Golf Musings Spend time on the golf course this month to refine your swing and perfect your putt. By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy.

May is the perfect month to work on your golf skills on Hilton Head Island. The temperatures are ideal, with endless opportunities to tee off on the area’s championship courses. Here’s a quick overview of why golf is such an incredible sport, offering so many different benefits:

M

– Magnificent opportunities. Golf offers the chance to experience the joy of striking a golf ball and seeing it fly, piercing the blue sky. The sound of a properly struck ball will become addictive: the swoosh of the swing, the loud click of the impact and the air-cutting sound of the ball racing away. It’s exhilarating and uplifting. At this time of year, the weather is excellent on Hilton Head Island, with temperatures ranging from 64 to 82 degrees. In May, we typically average only six rain days.

A

– Atmosphere. The atmosphere of golf combines the best of gentle hiking with spending time at your favorite bar, attending church or strolling through a local fair with friends. All of these environments are uplifting and relaxing. Best of all, they help to restore your body and soul. Time on the golf course is time well spent!

Y

– Youthful. Golf helps you stay youthful, if you play golf correctly. Brain mapping has revealed to scientists what happens in the brain when we are engaged in activities like golf. Electrical impulses from the different parts of the brain light up the monitors, showing the areas of the brain that are involved in that activity. Walking and hiking typically show softer lights, compared to a light aerobic exercise class. Reading a novel for pleasure is less brilliant than a doctor reviewing and studying a patient’s records. Brain mapping also reveals how the different parts of the brain interact, as well as the sequence and organization

of various areas of the brain. Golf activates all parts of the brain because it includes creative, physical and logical thoughts. You have to imagine each shot, which engages the creative part of the brain. That part of your brain has to coordinate with the logical parts, and the parts that connect to the body. You can stay younger by creating interaction and encouraging connection between all parts of your brain. I hope you’ll take advantage of the magnificent opportunities to play golf on Hilton Head Island, the incredible atmosphere that can restore your spirit and a game that can help keep you youthful. Enjoy every moment on the golf course this month. I hope to see you out on the green! A former PGA Tour pro and member of the local golf Hall of Fame, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?”, a free clinic and demonstration, every Monday at 4 p.m. (843) 785-1138, (800) 827-3006 or www. palmettodunes.com. hiltonhead.com
