November saw everyone settling back into life in Australia & New Zealand, along with some great events to welcome cruisers to our shores for the summer season.

The Milbi Festival in Bundaberg was a huge success as well as the fantastic Cruisers Festival in the Bay of Islands. This week Whangārei are putting on a welcome for the cruisers too.

I also briefly headed over to Australia for the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime Conference to help educate the heads of maritime police from around the Pacific about profiling sailors, giving them a taste of what we have seen in the Pacific over the season, and also providing some constructive criticism on the way that some vessels were treated and searched this season. You can read a bit more about my trip in this edition of the magazine and for the full report, logon to the members area of our website to join our community and be part of the conversation.

I went to the always wonderful Yachting NZ Excellence Awards at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron where Don Salthouse received the Cruising award this season for all his amazing work helping other sailors and locals in the Pacific.

It was a lovely evening and extra special to see the Americas Cup shining over the proceedings! Congratulations Don!

` I was also invited to attend the 36 Degrees Brokers - Beneteau & Lagoon Owners Rally to Kawau Island in Auckland which was heaps of fun. Over 100 people attended with a fantastic fleet of gorgeous boats braving the slightly average forecast There are some fabulous photos later on in the magazine.

Our Island Cruising team continues to grow, and I am delighted to announce that Cecile de Ruijter has joined our team to help Gemma and I out with lots of projects we’ve got coming your way, including recruiting some new fabulous new business partners to join our cruising community and offering some excellent deals for our members and rally participants!

If you are a marine business and would like to increase your profile and become part of our awesome cruising community, please drop us a line or check out our Partnership proposal guide which details some of the many ways we can help to promote your quality products and fabulous services, and great prices to our cruising community. We would love to have you join us!

This month we welcomed Wynn Fraser Paints who are offering a fantastic deal for our members and also Oceanflo Desalination who have got some great watermakers - which are really essential for anyone wanting to do any cruising offshore in comfort, particularly to the Pacific where it isn’t always that easy to pull up to a dock and turn on a tap...

We have also partnered with the Viking Explorers Rally who run a rally across the Pacific They’ll be encouraging their participants to join us to continue further afield to the South Pacific, and if any of our members are keen to cross the Atlantic, they’ll be offering you a great discounted rate too!

Our South Island Rally participants now have their detailed rally packs, and a the South Island Rally guide book to help them prepare for their upcoming adventures and we are having a webinar with them next week to run through some passage planning, and tips on all the great places they can visit on their upcoming summer adventures!

We are also excited to be collaborating with Marsden Cove Marina on an explore Northland mini-rally. You can find more info later in the newsletter, and this will be a great shakedown for those heading further north to the Islands next season

Our NZ vessels on the Pacific Rally 2025 had a webinar with Maritime New Zealand this week to talk through the details of the new International Voyage Certificate process and to make sure that we are all on the same page for what needs to be done between now and our planned departure date in early May, and it looks like we are all on track there. MNZ have been very open to all our fantastic members feedback in this space and it is great to be able to work closely with them as they develop the new process and ensuring everything goes smoothly for those heading offshore on the rally next year.

If you are keen to do some offshore sailing next season, please consider joining our CrewSeeker service. We always have yachts looking for extra hands to assist on their adventures It is a great way of having that offshore experience without having to take your own boat!

If you are looking at buying a boat - there are some incredible boats for sale at the moment. Check out all the details further on in the magazine.

Rally 2025

Anyone intending to take a recreational boat overseas must now complete an application through Maritime NZ. Please allow at least three months from the time of the application to your intended departure.

Skippers (Masters) must apply for an International Voyage Certificate (IVC) with Maritime NZ, rather than for a Cat 1 certificate with Yachting NZ (YNZ) as in previous years. This change came into effect on July 1, 2024.

If your boat is foreign flagged and you are planning an international voyage, you must still notify Maritime NZ. Yachting NZ will continue to manage Category 1-3 inspections for boats competing in yacht races. If you are participating in a race overseas (and your voyage starts in NZ), you still need to apply for an IVC with Maritime NZ.

Applicants for an IVC must meet several safety and administrative requirements before they can depart. This process falls under Section 21 of the Maritime Transport Act, which is designed to support the safe passage of vessels and their crew when departing for overseas.

The law requires the Director of Maritime NZ to be satisfied that the following are adequate for the intended voyage:

· the boat

· the safety equipment it carries, and · the crew.

There are currently no significant changes to the cost or adequacy requirements for vessel, safety equipment, and crew (note that all fees are subject to review over time). While skippers and crew will experience some changes in terms of the process and documentation and some of the terminology used, these are intended to be straightforward. We encourage anyone considering taking their boat overseas to carefully read the guidance and other information on our website.

Details about the changes and application forms are available on our website at the link below. Skippers and crew can also contact us at RecreationalInternationalVoyage@maritimenz.govt.nz.

Past, present and future of sailing on display at Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta

The City of Sails has a rich maritime history stretching back to the day the province of Auckland was founded in 1840. And on Monday 27 January 2025, Aucklanders will be treated to a spectacular display featuring the past, present and future of New Zealand sailing and seafaring, as the Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta returns for its 185th year.

The annual one-day regatta is New Zealand’s oldest sporting event, and will be the flagship opening event of the sixweek long Moana Auckland festival. More than just a yacht race, the regatta welcomes craft of all types and ages at venues across the city of Auckland

One of the biggest draw cards for spectators is a regular turnout of dozens of classic yachts, which offers an impressive live demonstration of Auckland’s illustrious yacht racing history. Juxtaposed against the cutting-edge SailGP fleet which will race in Auckland the weekend prior, these craft are a living reminder of just how far the sport of sailing has come in the last two centuries.

“It’s said that Auckland has the largest fleet of authentically restored classic yachts still sailing anywhere in the world,” says Regatta Chair Bill Lomas, “ so seeing them together on the start line at Westhaven, as people would have in days gone by, is really special.”

Unlike many restored classics elsewhere in the world, the majority of the Auckland fleet haven’t been upgraded with modern deck gear Original pulleys and winches give sailors as well as spectators a taste of what racing these vessels was really like for the sailors of old “It’s a long way from the modern boat building and computing technology that you’ll see on the SailGP or America’s Cup yachts,” says Lomas. “But we hope that with SailGP on the weekend before, it’ll give people renewed interest in seeing the roots of sailing.

The Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta is really where it all started for yacht racing in New Zealand ”But the regatta isn’t just about classic boats

In the dinghy and foiling classes, spectators will witness the grass roots of New Zealand sailing, where future sailing superstars are born. Olympic, America’s Cup and round the world sailors have cut their teeth at past Auckland Anniversary Day Regattas, with the likes of Liv Mackay now representing New Zealand in the SailGP circuit, and Olympian Josh Armit still regularly competing in the Windfoiling fleet hosted at Takapuna Boating Club on Anniversary Day

With two of the seven small boat venues also hosting the Auckland Championships for several dinghy classes over Anniversary Weekend, there’s an even higher chance of spotting the sailing stars of the future in action.

Murrays Bay Sailing Club will host what’s likely to be the regatta’s biggest fleet, with the Optimist and Starling fleets racing there over the long weekend Last year ’ s fleet numbered a staggering 177 boats, despite challenging weather conditions, with young Opti and Starling sailors bravely battling 25 knot winds to compete in the event

For the cruisers, there's both open and no-extras options from Mahurangi to Auckland (good option for anyone returning from the Mahurangi regatta over the weekend), and a no-extras race from Rakino too for anyone looking for a shorter option. We'd welcome entries in the harbour race too - it's usually around 15nm, starting Westhaven. All races finish at Resolution Buoy off Orakei

The Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta also has divisions for tugboats, classic launches, waka ama, remote controlled yachts, and in the Viaduct Harbour, up to 360 paddlers will battle it out for victory in the Dragon Boat races, drawing huge crowds of onlookers.

The event is made possible thanks to the generous support of Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, Auckland Council, Hawaiian Airlines, Lawson’s Dry Hills Wines, Rothbury Insurance Brokers, Ellerslie Jewellers, Spirit of Adventure Trust, Aotearoa Gaming Trust, Trillian Trust, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and the Royal New Zealand Navy More information about watching and taking part in the Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta can be found at www.regatta.org.nz. New Zealand’s festival on the water is back in 2025

Dates have been released for the Auckland Boat Show in 2025. Bringing a festival on the water to the heart of central Auckland, it will showcase all things boating from 6-9 March.

The Auckland Boat Show, scheduled to run as part of Moana Auckland, New Zealand’s Ocean Festival, is timed to allow boating enthusiasts to enjoy a feast of March marine activities

Making the most of an Auckland summer on the water, the show gathers together 2025’s latest releases from boatbuilders and brokers across New Zealand and the world It’s a show which has become known throughout the region for the spectacular sight of the central city filling with hundreds of boats

The Auckland Boat Show is one of the key events of Moana Auckland and runs after the NZ Millennium Cup superyacht regatta in February to give visitors plenty to enjoy on the water.

A large marina display will spread through Jellicoe Harbour, filling the space outside the former America’s Cup bases with newly-released yachts, motoryachts, multihulls, superyachts, amphibious vessels and trailer boats. On-land exhibits will complement the on-water component of the show, taking up a Viaduct Events Centre spot in central Auckland’s buzzing Wynyard Quarter.

“There’s nothing like an Auckland summer on the water,” says show organiser, Stacey Cook.

“Which is why we stage the show in early March. It’s such a pleasure to showcase New Zealand’s marine industry where it’s at its best; on the water, enjoying the sun and lifestyle that boating brings ”

Uniquely in this part of the world, sea trials are a crucial component of the event With the Waitematā Harbour as the show’s neighbour, manufacturers and brokers are able to demonstrate vessels in their element to buyers, allowing them to bring performance, sea-kindliness and handling to the forefront

For 24 years the Auckland Boat Show has also provided an important stage for regional and international parts and services providers. With a large on-land component of the show, the event has become a launching point each year for annual releases of innovative products and new developments.

Lifejacket Laws Amended in Queensland - Australia

Lifejacket laws in Queensland are set to expand from 1 December following considerable consultation and deliberation by Maritime Safety Queensland which included direct engagement with the BIA.

The new rules make lifejackets compulsory: when alone or accompanied only by children under 12 years in an open boat less than 4.8m in length and underway; during the crossing of a designated coastal bar in an open boat, as well as in any open area of a boat of any length, and on certain craft; while boating between sunset and sunrise in an open boat less than 4.8m in length and underway; and children aged over one year and under 12 years must wear a lifejacket when on an open boat or in the open area of a boat of any length while it's underway.

More details are available at the MSQ website.

Another great day of the Cruisers Festival at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Thanks to Dan Busby our guide for providing an incredible commentary, great storytelling along with plenty of humour.

Powhiri

A fantastic start to the Cruising Festival with a passionate and energised welcoming Powhiri and kapa haka performance by one of our local schools, Kawakawa Primary, also known as Nga Huia Rau o Kawakawa Kapa Haka.

Great to have more attendees this year from our offshore cruisers to our local businesses who felt and witnessed the force of these young and talent superstars. The weather earlier certainly indicated what all experienced was heartfelt. We thank you all for your support and look forward to our growth and making more meaningful, worthwhile connections. Help us improve Southland Vessel Haul-Out and Cleaning Facilities

1 November 2024

The Guardians have long advocated for better facilities in Bluff to haul out vessels. We want to make it easier for boaties and operators to get their hulls clean and comply with the Fiordland Clean Vessel Pass requirements. But more than that, we think better facilities would make life a whole lot easier for boat owners and be a boon for Bluff. We first held a community meeting about this in 2018, so it’s been a hot minute. But the council are listening and we need your help to explain the opportunity.

If you own or run a big boat (bigger than a trailer boat), please take a few minutes to work through this survey. And even better – forward it on to your mates.

Environment Southland has commissioned Boffa Miskell to report on the current and future needs of vessel haul-out facilities. This short survey will help us understand and support the needs of owners and operators like you.

Surveys completed by 10 November will go into a draw to win a $100 Prezzy Card.

Take the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7TBY3GW

Why participate?

You’ll help us understand current and future needs for hull cleaning and related vessel services, and identify potential service improvements and facility developments that will benefit vessel owners and operators.

What’s in it for you?

This initiative aims to protect Southland’s marine environment by making it easier to haul out and clean vessels. The information you provide will support development of better, more convenient facilities that will minimise operational downtime and potentially save you time and money.

How long will it take?

The survey will take approximately 15 minutes. Your responses are confidential and will only be used to inform the needs assessment report.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out directly to Kanem@boffamiskell.co.nz

Bountiful Banda

When we first arrived in South East Asia from Australia in 2012 we had wanted to sail up to the Banda Islands, however the wind was strongly against us, so we entered Indonesia via Kupang instead. But always the thought of missing the Banda Islands which many sailors rave about, rankled. Now that we are putting Stardancer up for sale at the end of this year, I wanted to ‘close the circle’ and visit both Raja Ampat and especially the Banda Islands, and I am so very glad we have.

Both destinations are superbly rich in sea life and beauty. We were ten days later in leaving Sorong than planned due to Christian having dengue fever. He spent two days on a drip in Pertamina Hospital in Sorong , checked himself out early but was supposed to be resting as we had two overnighters to do as well as prepare our sloop Stardancer for the 271 nm voyage across to Bandaneira.

On 12th May we said farewell to Tampa Garam anchorage and Sorong and decided to miss Misool. We sailed through the Selat Sele with West Papua on our port side and Salawati island on the starboard. Not only was it very pretty but a terrific sail.

200 nm after leaving Sorong we were in sight of Pulau Seram Laut Lagoon (3 degrees 52’ and 130 degrees 57’) Luckily we arrived before sunset and had enough light to enter the lagoon where we

The Banda Islands are part ofthe Central Maluku Regency where three plates meet; the Eurasian, the Indo Australian and Pacific plates with exceptionally deep waters, some as deep as 5000 plus metres.

This group often islands (only 7 are inhabited) offers superb diving and snorkelling yet are not on the main tourist route which makes them attractive to us. They have a tumultuous history, having been the global trading centre for the spices of Nutmeg and Mace for many years. Before the Europeans came to Banda in the early 16th Century, it had been a trading destination for trading boats from north Java, Malaya, Arabia, China and India for many centuries. Word spread of the uses both medicinal and cosmetic of sandalwood, cloves, nutmeg (Myristica Fragrans) and mace.

The Bandas were not the biggest growers of spices but ruins of nutmeg plantations can still be seen on Ai island and the Eldorado fortress on Run Island. The Portuguese arrived in 1512 followed by the Dutch from 1599 onwards. It was this part of history that was on our minds as we entered Bandaneira , (4 degrees 30’S and 129 degrees 53’E) as trading ships had for many centuries past.

works in the Maulana Hotel had watched our searching and was madly waving to us. After a few shouted communications we ended up anchored very close to the shore in 25m of water with the stern being happily tied to a lone coconut tree outside the hotel.

Dinner that night at the hotel was memorable, not especially for the food, decor or service, although they were very good, but more for the sense of being in a beautiful place and safely anchored. I felt I was part of a Somerset Maugham story. The views through the gardens of the old hotel over the waterto Banda Besar and Gunung Api in the glow ofthe setting sun were pure magic.

We were introduced to a man called Mr Man, who taught English and was also a tour guide. He was a mine of information. His WhatsApp: +6282238508726.

The afternoon I spent at his house learning from his wife how to cook some Indonesian dishes, was one of my happiest memories. We cooked Ikan Bumbu Rujak, Eggplant with Teronng sauce with nuts and fragrant yellow rice, enough for me to take back to the boat and enjoy forthe nexttwo days! We were notlucky with our plans to take a local boat to go snorkeling and explore some of the other islands because the weather turned windy and rainy for a few days. This was disappointing because we had heard that going out with Blue Motion Dives was an incredible experience.

However when there were breaks between showers we walked around to explore the township. Several of the older buildings have been restored and each reflects their colonial past with colonnades or shutters. The museum is open on request and the Delfika guesthouse opposite will know where the key is. I enjoyed the paintings depicting wars and the old photographs. The collections of old cannons and household items were poorly displayed and a few more signs explaining the relevance of such items would have been good. But resources are poor and it was great to see antiquities valued.

We needed an ATM. There are two at the BRI Bank. However, there was a queue for these with sounds of disgruntled people. I found out why. There was no cash at the bank. Instead we were told to go over the road to the Chinese hardware store where the owner would give cash on credit cards. So about ten people filed into the shop where the owner sat busily handling the cash, and charging a fee. Who needs a bank!

Taking our umbrellas with us we explored the Belgica Fort situated on a commanding hill overlooking the sea. Prior to this iteration of the fort there had been several other forts (Fort Nassau) built on this hill since the 1500s, initially by the Portuguese Captain Garcia in 1529, abandoned in 1599 and then the forts fell into disrepair until in 1662 Dutchman Jan Peterszoon Coen ordered Fort Belgica (as it was to be called) ,to be renovated so it could accommodate 400 men and 50 guns. The new design was that of a five pointed star with tall look out towers on each point. This was built to last by building it in stone imported from other islands but after the Dutch EastIndia company left in 1796 when the British arrived, the fort was almost unused. Fort Belgica was slowly decaying until 1919 when it was fully restored, but using concrete instead of stone. I was impressed by its solidity. It has splendid views all around and was definitely worth the hour or two we spent there.

The Dutch tried unsuccessfully to have a monopoly on the spice trade and managed to get the Banda elders to sign a contract, which however, meant nothing to them and so continued to trade with whomever they wished. The governor general, Coen, enforced this contract in a barbaric manner, ordering the massacre of virtually all the Bandanese. Itis estimated that around 13,000 or more Bandanese were brutally tortured and killed. Those who could, escaped to outer islands where there are a few descendants today, but the Dutch replaced the workers with their slaves and Dutch settlers. This was the status quo for almost 200 years but because of poor management and corruption this arm of the Dutch East India Company gradually declined and in 1795 was liquidated. The Bandas were subsequently under British rule, then Japanese during World War II, before becoming Indonesian territory in 1949.

Mr Man took me to visit a Nutmeg plantation. I had visions of acres of land studded with trees but could not have been more wrong. We went up a hill to a quarter acre of land growing different types of trees and bushes as well as some herbs like lemon grass and pandanus. The caretaker was very knowledgeable and with Mr Man’s help was able to answer my many questions about the growing and harvesting of nutmeg. I learned that mace is the red waxy covering of the nut itself, and the mace and nutmeg are encased in a solid fleshy shell. I bought a small bag of mace to use as a tea. I asked how much I should use and was told with a laugh, not more than one or two in a glass or cup because too much can give hallucinatory side effects. I have not tested this for veracity. I came away with a big bag of nutmeg, mace, candlenuts, and bunches of herbs to use in my Indonesian recipes gleaned from Mrs Man.

As Christian was busy changing the oil and getting Stardancer ready to leave for the next leg to Labuan Bajo in Flores, I went with Mr Man to the local Passarto buy fresh fruit and vegetables. It was a real asset to be with Mr Man because the market rambled over a couple of streets, mostly under makeshift cover and I would have got lost. Also he made sure I wasn’t overcharged as well as carrying the two heavy bags of fresh vegetables for me. He knew where the freshest eggs were, at a stall owned by an ex student of his, so we exchanged a few words in English for her to practise. What Christian and I noticed is that things move slowly here and people have time to smile or stop to say hello which gave us a genuine feeling of being welcome in Bandaneira. When you include the charming Banda Islands in your sailing itinerary be prepared to change your plans because you will want to stay longer.

So now forthe next few legs that will hopefully see us back in Langkawi by November 2024 where we have a sad mission in front of us. We are going to sell our beloved Stardancer. She should be ready to put on the market in January 2025, but then again, we may just have a last sail to Thailand! (Please message me for specs);

The cruising couple who are revolutionising cruising guides.

Meet Steve and Helena Neal. They have lived aboard their sailing yacht since 2013 and have spent much of that time channelling their energy into building a web site and app that has been revolutionizing the way in which cruisers stay in touch and share destination information

Initially released as a web site, and now available as an app, noforeignland (pronounced: no foreign land) is a crowdsourced cruising destination guide and a social networking platform for those that live at sea

The app release has caused a bit of a buzz in the sailing community. A quick look in the app store will reveal nothing less than 5* reviews, so we thought we’d contact Steve and Helena to find out more about this intriguing project.

Staying in touch with friends

We first asked what had inspired them to create noforeignland:

“We met so many great people during our first few years of living aboard, but found it hard to keep track of where they all were. Boats move, so knowing exactly where your friends are at any given time is almost impossible.”

“The idea to build a web site came about while we were spending the off-season in a marina in Italy along with dozens of other friendly cruising boats The initial version of noforeignland was a web site which simply allowed boats to update their location on a shared map This worked really well, and allowed us to all see where our friends were during the sailing season. Boats that would have otherwise missed one-another were now arranging to meet up. We were soon getting calls asking whether other boats could join in. There was clearly a need for something like this.” The following winter the duo released an improved version of the site for public use which included automated boat tracking and another thing that cruisers continually talk about: destination information.

A destination guide

The level of detail available for all things boat-related clearly demonstrates that noforeignland was built for sailors by sailors with an understanding of what’s really needed when out cruising. And, in the past few years their data has grown beyond Steve and Helena’s wildest dreams and is rapidly becoming a crucial guide for sailors in many parts of the world. Helena commented:

“We are not commercial so don’t get paid for what we do This is a passion project for us and a way to give something to the sailing community. We cannot afford to advertise so all our growth has been through word of mouth, and that has served us well as most of our users are seasoned sailors. We continually get the same feedback: people love the authenticity of our information, as it is all added by real sailors actively cruising the areas they are documenting.”

Anyone can add reviews and upload photos, but before adding new markers to the map, users must earn their Contributor badge by demonstrating an understanding of the contribution guidelines. The guidelines are there to ensure that places are always presented consistently with an objective overview given first, followed by photos, and finally by a useful review section where users are free to express their personal opinions As all the destination information on noforeignland has been contributed by real sailors, expect to see candid summaries of information rather than lengthy marketing jargon

Amazing photos

Whenever someone uploads a photo for a place, they can choose to add it to a monthly photo competition. Sailors from around the world share thousands of photos every month illustrating all types of destinations from anchorages, to dive sites, marinas and local attractions The standard of the images is extremely high and helps paint a picture of what to expect when you arrive:

Finding things you need

A major challenge of life on the move is finding the things you need. Have you ever needed to top up your propane tanks and struggled to find a place to do it? Or visited a new anchorage and wondered where to tie up your dinghy to get ashore? If you look on noforeignland, you will see Propane refills and Dinghy docks listed among the myriad of useful map markers.

But, what if you need to find a propane refill near an anchorage that also has a dinghy dock? No problem, use the map filters to only show the markers you want see and then decide where to go:

What if there’s no destination data in my area?

All cruising areas on noforeignland started off with limited data. Over the years though, sailors have embraced the simplicity of the app and added tons of useful information.

If there is only limited data in your area, then why not start documenting the anchorages and other points of interest that you know about? It is all about building something useful for the sailing community!

Boat tracking and boat groups

Since their initial release, noforeignland has gone on to support all manner of boat tracking systems. The impressive range of options includes commonly used devices like Iridium GO!, and Garmin inReach, and they support about a dozen other systems too. All this means that noforeignland is an increasingly popular choice for yacht tracking, both for individual boats and for clubs and rallies

Every boat on noforeignland has its own page with boat details and photos and, most importantly of all, a Follow button. When you tap to follow a friend’s boat, you are notified whenever that boat moves.

You can also filter the map to only show the boats you are following, making it easy to see all your friends’ locations at once:

Popular with clubs and rallies, Boat groups allow boats with a common interest to come together. The map can be filtered to show group members’ locations and there are forums where members can post questions to the group This feature has proved hugely popular with cruising families that want to meet and connect with other boats; they simply join the Kids4Sail group and tap the filter button to see where other kids’ boats are around them. They can then choose to either head over in their dinghy to say hi, or use the in-app chat to make contact.

Sharing journeys

Another very cool feature of their software is the ability to show each boat’s journey A journey is made up of the boat’s track and stories the crew have added to it Allowing other boats, and friends and family back home, to stay up to date with that boat’s adventures.

Crew may include text, links to blog articles, and even YouTube videos in their stories. A number of popular YouTube channels have recently started using noforeignland to show where their videos are being made:

What are our favourite features in the app?

There are some great features in the noforeignland app, among our favourites are:

Boat tracking: If you are interested in boat tracking, then give their Record my track feature a try. It uses your phone’s GPS to record an accurate track of your sailing trip which you can upload to your journey when you have a reliable internet connection If you are lucky enough to have internet access while out sailing, then the app can even be used to share live track updates while you are on the move.

Offline maps: If you are planning a trip, and think that you might not have internet access when you arrive, then download your destination area to an Offline map before setting off, thus ensuring you have all the information you need on arrival like: locations for Customs offices, ATMs, SIM card stores, and much more

Photo competition: Finally, if you ’ re a keen photographer, or just like browsing dream destinations, then we really like the monthly photo competition. To join, simply upload your best photos to the place markers on the map. The more likes your photos get, the better your chance of winning, so get snapping and good luck!

UPDATED CRUISING GUIDE FOR QUEENSLAND

Greg Luck has been a frequent contributor to the Down Under Rally Magazine He has released a new third edition of Cruising the Queensland Coast, his guide for yachts cruising from the Gold Coast to Lizard Island.

While cruising in 2023, Greg was struck by the number of cruisers who had adopted Starlink. The cheapest way to use it is on the Roam plan, designed to work over land. At sea, the very expensive Maritime plan must be used. Starlink “land” includes many islands and some reefs using a hexagonal tiling system. It can be hit and miss as to whether an anchorage or mooring is on “land” or sea for Starlink. New in the 3rd edition, each anchorage and mooring includes a Starlink icon to indicate land or sea.

Along with a print edition, the book comes as an eBook for tablets. However, the big players support a limited number of countries, and usually not the overseas territories of those countries such as Noumea or Tahiti. This has been a problem for some cruisers. The 3rd edition adds Rakuten Kobo, which supports 244 countries and overseas territories with excellent coverage for the Pacific.

The third edition is fully updated with:

•many new public moorings for the Townsville, Discovery and Cassowary coasts and the Whitsundays

•new anchorages, taking the total to 503 anchorages and moorings

•new public pontoons

•updates to the K’Gari Coast for the new Great Sandy Marine Park management plan

•Starlink land versus ocean status for each anchorage, mooring and marina along with the Telstra mobile reception

•digital TV reception strength for each anchorage

•latest marina changes including comprehensive information on super yacht berths and resultant marina berth layout changes

•S63 official Hydrographic chart references for each coast and how to use Australian

Hydrographic charts on apps and chart plotters along with other navigation data sources

•expanded coverage of the Gold Coast and Moreton Bay

•recalculated wave roses for recent Waverider buoy placements such as the Wide Bay Bar

•higher-resolution aerial images and photos in the print version

•numerous other changes and updates

Owning a boat is not just about having fun and traveling to the most beautiful destinations in the world. While that is the main reason why people go into the boating life, there is also the same level of responsibility attached to it, as there is enjoyment.

As a boat owner or manager, you have to look after your vessel to ensure that it is in good shape and fully stocked to leave the dock and get you and your group to your next destination safe and sound. As such, you need to plan ahead and create a list of tasks to accomplish.

Use a task management software to help you navigate the maintenance system of a boat

The best boat management tool TheBoatApp, by Marine Data Cloud, is a boat management tool designed with task monitoring in mind What it does is provide you with all your boating life in one place Through the app you can have access to your marine life, fully cataloged and backed up so you never lose track of what is going on with your boat at any time of the day and year This information is accessible on any device, whether you have an active internet connection or not

Most importantly, this is a boat management software that allows you to plan, assign tasks to other members of your team such as skippers, marina personnel, or technicians, and place deadlines so you can be ahead of the game.

The advantages of TheBoatApp

The major advantage of using TheBoatApp is that you can always access information in real-time. So if a task has been completed you can just check on the app if it has been marked as such or if you need to assign someone else to help.

You can also register a task to be done on a certain date and get a notification when it is checked off the list If you are not the most organized person when it comes to remembering to do a task, just add a prealert to get notified ahead of time

Last but not least, share this information with whoever you believe needs to be in the loop and get your boat in good shape before a trip

Check out more features of TheBoatApp online and register for the free version to get a personal look at how the app may help you in task monitoring.

This is the new and most improved way of managing your tasks and helping you enjoy your boat as much as you can.

HYDROVANE IS BOTH:

A Self Steering Windvane System:

A completely independent mechanical system (ie. non-electrical) that steers the boat on a wind-based course. Easiest to operate, with no lines in the cockpit, and excellent on all points of sail and in all conditions.

It is an Auxiliary Rudder type of windvane system – the Vane drives its own Rudder via a sophisticated Drive Unit linkage.

An Emergency Rudder/ Steering System

Inherently a second Rudder and Steering System for your boat.

It is the strongest Emergency Rudder and Steering System available today. Always in place, nothing to set-up – takes the fear out of losing your rudder or breaking your vessel’s steering mid passage or close to shore.

We are very proud to be a part of the South Pacific Sailing Network - a group of like minded businesses and countries around the South Pacific who are all committed to promoting sustainable yachting tourism and advocating on behalf of cruisers exploring the South Pacific.

Love great wine?

Say goodbye to heavy, breakable bottles onboard!

Greenskin Wine presents a premium wine experience in a convenient 750ml soft pouch, ideal for those who want to enjoy fine wine without the hassle of cruising with heavy, bulky, breakable bottles onboard.

With 8 varieties to choose from, they have a superb choice of whites and reds from the worldrenowned Margaret River and Great Southern wine regions of Western Australia. You can pre-order through their website and nominate to have your wine delivered anywhere within Australia for just $4.95 per 6-pack (3 or more cases FREE delivery).

Greenskin Wine pouches hold 750ml but are around half the size and weight of a standard bottle of wine, which will save on weight and loads of fridge and storage space onboard. They are also unbreakable, making them ideal when on the water. And once the joy is over, they fold flat, so you do not have to lug bulky empties with you!

Another fab bonus. If you just want a glass or two, simply squeeze all the air from the pouch and reseal, and your wine will stay fresh for up to 3 weeks, saving on wasted wine and money!

Sip Sustainably

Not only is the wine great quality, but Greenskin Wine pouches take 80% less energy to produce than a glass bottle, and due to their lightweight, compact nature, they take a lot less energy to transport.

The ultimate kicker is that the pouches are 100% recyclable. They even take care of the recycling. Every 6-pack comes with a postage-paid satchel, making it super easy to return your empties via AusPost for recycling.

Dear Captain Jack,

BOATING BOATING ETIQUETTE! ETIQUETTE!

Got a question? Ask a Pirate...

I am crewing on a boat on an ocean passage but they want me to get up at midnight to do my watch, wash the dishes, scrub the hull, pay for my flights to and from the boat and also contribute to the cost of food etc on the trip. How do most people split the costs & duties for this kind of thing?

Yours Mr Hook

Ahoy there Mr Hook,

Every boat is different and it is super important for everyone to be on the same page when it comes to splitting the costs & workload - in fact I heard from Viki when I took her out for dinner this week that money issues are one of the most common ways that people end up falling out on a passage.

I reckon it all boils down to who is doing whom a favour... if the skipper is unable to sail the boat on a passage on their own and they need some extra experienced hands on board and you are just doing a tough point to point ocean passage- then I’d suggest it would be reasonable for them to at least cover the costs of your food while on board, and potentially contribute towards your other expenses.

If you are a complete newbie and keen for some bluewater experience (but the skipper is quite capable of handling the boat themselves), or if you are staying on board for a few weeks, going cruising around having a holiday in the islands and having some fun times, then it would generally be expected that you’d pay for your flights to and from the boat, and contribute to the cost of the food and other expenses at least while you were enjoying some cruising holiday time.

If you are super experienced, have lots of great qualifications and are there to assist with running the boat and also just doing the tough passage then I’d expect that the skipper might consider paying for your transport, expenses and potentially even paying you for your help on the boat.

Every situation is unique In any circumstance, it is really important to cover off what works best for all parties and coming to an agreement before anyone goes committing to anything. There is a great workshop on the Island Cruising website to prompt you to ask these questions and many more before agreeing to crew with anyone.

Happy sailing!

YoursCaptJack

"Elvira" is a innovative deck saloon designed to sail far away with a short handed crew; twin engines, hydraulic centerboard lifting system, all lines coming back to the helm stations on electric winches. Her building construction, equipment and volumes, energy and water self sufficiency make "Elvira" an ultimate compromise between sailing ability and luxury liveaboard.

East of the Lizard

The Sundeer & Deerfoot designed boats from Steve Dashew are regarded as the best short handed cruising boats in the world, bar none. With a solidly built GRP / Kevlar hull, easily managed sail plan, shallow draft and moveable water ballast they make 200+ mile days easy for a crew of 2 or more in comfort and safety. It is very rare for one of these boats to come on the market. She had a major refit in 2018 and another smaller one in 2022 and again in 2023-2024. The Owner can't help himselft to make her perfect. The current owner has owned 'East of the Lizard' 3 times now over the last 10 years and sailed many miles around the Pacific. Right now in Fiji. View online here

For sale - Hydrovane windvane self-steering

New out of the UK 2016, been to the tropics and back to NZ 20182023 Was sitting unused over COVID period in Vanuatu from Nov 2019- Sept 2023 during which time it was covered, and the boat was on the hardstand The unit was mounted offset on a walkthrough transom Beale 33.

It is a very reluctant sale due to ill health and therefore no further offshore sailing for the boat. This extra crew named ‘Albi’ on our 2 handed adventures was our best investment for open water passage making, so simple and totally reliable.

This unit has a ‘stubby’ windvane which suited the backstay set up. We also had the autohelm able to be attached to its tiller for motoring.

‘Albi’ comes complete with pictured brackets and unit cover plus new spare pins and the original red Hydrovane vane cover which we didn’t use. Instead, I made one and kept this as a spare.

www.hydrovane.com are super supportive and will give advice all the way. You can also check out www.hydrovane.com/ourproduct/specifications/ for more details.

$5,500 ono, unit is in Waikawa Marina. This price is for pick up.
