Sea Spotter is a joint initiative between the Department of Conservation, WWF, Christchurch City Council, the Ministry of Primary Industries, MAUI63 and Microsoft.

Our goal is to create the most comprehensive marine mammal data set in New Zealand's history, to help protect endangered and at-risk marine wildlife.

With help from artificial intelligence, we can accurately identify your discoveries and log them in our public database for scientific research purposes.

Citizen Science is the practice of collaborative and inclusive scientific research by the community as a whole. You don't have to be a qualified scientist to helpanyone can do their part by collecting data to aid the rest of the scientific community.

As technology improves, our ability to crowd-source data has increased exponentially and science is no longer reserved simply for scientists and academics. Sea Spotter allows anyone in New Zealand to become a Citizen Scientist and help support local marine mammal research with their very own insights and discoveries.
