child. But luckily, David's sister Tina moved from Virginia to Hawaii so she helps take care of Buddy. If Buddy’s family is away for long, he goes to doggy daycare at Furever Friends. He especially enjoys the doggie party and sunbathing. At home, Buddy enjoys chasing geckos and sharing playdates with his puppy friends Yoshi and Chewy. His favorite food is Vietnamese chicken pho, which his grandma cooks especially for him. David and Lily feel very blessed to have Buddy and their goal is for Buddy to become a certified therapy dog and share his joy with those most in need.

A dog-friendly garden beckons in peaceful Manoa Valley

A
largely unused patio surrounded by a white picket fence next to Hawaii Doggie Bakery in Manoa Valley became the source of inspiration. “I was baking in the kitchen and had my hands full of fresh steamed Okinawan sweet potato when it suddenly occurred to me...let’s build a dog-friendly garden,” said Niki Libarios, bakery co-owner. Established in 1998, HDB is widely known for its innovative and healthy dog treats using fresh local human-grade ingredients. Collaborating with long-time friend Val Yoshikane, owner of Leaf Creations, the two set to work on researching dog-friendly herbs, fruits and vegetables and ornamental plants. Val, a long-time animal wellness advocate and gardening enthusiast was excited and honored. “I enjoy sharing how eating fresh improves wellness by eating a seasonal rainbow.” The new garden launched in early July with a late afternoon Garden Pawty for dogs and their owners. While enjoying fresh fruit skewers and special HDB creations including Pineapple Mini Cakes and Sweet Potato Boba Drinks, guests learned about fruits and vegetables that add nutritional value to their diets as well as which non-toxic ornamental plants are best to include in a garden. BPA-free grow bags featured thoughtfully curated companion plantings of herbs with Top: Sweet potato thriving along with purple ola‘a beauty. Center: Garden Pawty pupu—fresh fruit skewers. appropriate ornamentals for shade and ground cover. Soil was conditioned with EM1 (elective microorganisms) allowing nutrients to become bioavailable for plants to absorb. Val’s favorite pet-friendly duo are the self-propagating alyssum and ola‘a beauty (wishbone flower/ torenia). The diminutive flower of the alyssum attracts pollinators, is an insectary plant (repels bad bugs, attracts beneficial insects) and a ground cover for weed control and longevity. The bees love the purple ola‘a beauty. It also provides ground cover for weed control and semishade for seedlings. Turmeric and ginger plants were also featured in groupings to provide shade and wind block. Hawaii Doggie Bakery’s dog-friendly garden will be switched out based on seasonal plants appropriate to the Manoa Valley climate. Stop by and be inspired to start your own backyard or lanai garden. Val and Niki believe in feeding yourselves and pets with colorful fresh seasonal foods for health and vitality—let food be thy medicine!

Lulu’s Leap Lulu Del Rey captures top prize in The Pet Hui and The Pet Hale’s Pet Star Photo Contest

ost pet owners think their furry family members are the cutest in the world and their fur babies will always be “stars” in their eyes. So The Pet Hui television show and The Pet Hale store created a contest for them— The Pet Star Photo Contest. Over 100 pet owners in Hawaii submitted photos of their furry companions earlier this year hoping to be selected for the grand prize. After careful evaluation, the winner is—drum roll!— Lulu Del Rey, a five year old mixed breed dog owned by Carissa Wong and Daniel Kueny. The stunning winning photo displayed an action shot that celebrates her joy for life. Carissa was the photographer and she was ecstatic when she found out that Lulu won the photo contest. She expressed her happiness, “I was thrilled that I was able to capture a photo that the judges enjoyed. The photo showcases Lulu’s energy and soul.” Lulu is no stranger to being in the spotlight. This beautiful dog with unique markings is on Instagram/@ mermaidpup and Facebook/mermaidpup. Her human mom and dad fell in love with her at an animal shelter at the age of two months and immediately adopted her. Lulu’s favorite things to do are play at the beach with her friends, hiking, traveling, getting attention and eating snacks. She also enjoys wearing dresses and costumes custom-made for her by Carissa. These fashion creations have also garnered attention and Daniel is working on launching a dog clothing company called Isle Style. In addition to bragging rights, Lulu Del Rey won a photo session package with Lani Sanders of Haute Creatures Pet Photography, a fabulous gift package from The Pet Hale store and a featured segment on The Pet Hui. All of the photos submitted for this competition were fantastic and The Pet Hui and The Pet Hale are very appreciative to those that participated.
