‘Elima, our Chinese Shar Pei, has been a delightful addition to our family since February of 2023. Her endearing personality and distinctive appearance make her the cutest and most lovable member of our ‘ohana. When we first got her, we couldn’t decide on a name, so for a couple of months, she responded to the name ‘puppy.’ She was one of five puppies in her litter and was the lone survivor of an unexpected pregnancy. In remembrance of her furry siblings, we decided on the name ‘Elima, meaning the number five in ʻŌlelo Hawai‘i.
Beneath her many wrinkles, lies a heart of gold. She loves meeting fellow furry friends for play dates and yummy pup-cups. She also enjoys tagging along for rides to farmers’ markets where she can get her favorite treats from Belly Rub Kitchen. Though her family enjoys going to the beach, she will not step a paw into the ocean (or any other form of water). Her favorite place to
‘Elima
be is at her dad’s house where she can hang out with her Shar Pei family: mom Kalia, dad Kamu, older brother Blu, and older sister Kaia.
‘Elima is quick to show her intelligence when she smells a yummy treat. She’s quick to learn new tricks and commands, always eager to show off her new moves. She enjoys sniffing out treats in her puzzles and playing with her collection of Dis-and-Bark toys. She is also an avid ‘snack-a-holic.’ On a hot summer day, she loves mangos straight from her backyard.

Inside the Puppy Mind
Early Puppy Development - A Case Study
Ialways look forward to working with puppies.
They’re an exciting and fun new addition to any family. However, puppy behavior and development are affected by both genetics and environmental/ social factors; Nature and Nurture.
We train owners on how to teach their puppy, mitigating unwanted puppy behaviors and setting the puppy up for the best adult behavioral outcome.
CASE STUDY
NAME: “Rona” - 8 weeks old, Dogo Argentino
SYMPTOMS: Jumping up and snapping at the young kids, baring teeth, snapping and growling at Mom, creating an unsafe home environment.
DIAGNOSIS: Rona had been separated from her mother and litter at the young age of 6 weeks and during the early days of her “Critical Period for Human Socialization” (Puppy->Human: 0-12 weeks, Puppy ->Canine: 0-16 weeks). With her new family, the high energy and chaotic child play created an over-excited and sometimes fearful puppy, whose only understanding of “Play” was to match the kids’ energy. This resulted in very natural and puppy-like jumping and nipping play behaviors.
With research at TheUniversityofGoogle,Mom began to shake bottles full of pennies and yell “NO!” at the puppy as she would engage in these acts, in her best attempt to stop the dangerous behavior around her children. Unfortunately, this resulted in a puppy who was now fearfully reactive to the newly scary, unpredictable, and even threatening humans. Subsequently, this taught Rona that her best defense was a good offense, and the territorial fearful growling and snapping behaviors began.
SOLUTION: After working with Rona and her owners until she was 6 months old, Mom said this: “I just feel like the house is super peaceful now. She
doesn’t bark at me anymore for anything, and I feel like we don’t have that tension anymore! I know exactly what I need to do now and I feel so much more confident stepping up and being able to teach Rona the behaviors I do want her doing, as opposed to just yelling at her. The kids love her now, and we feel like she is part of the family.”
We trained Rona’s family to teach her how to default into calmness and composure when meeting other people, kids, and dogs. By positively providing beneficial socialization and training, the puppy was rewarded for all calm behaviors in the presence of others. In addition, establishing some basic protocols and boundaries in the home, such as using a crate and having appropriate “play/zoomies zones” made for a safe home environment.

Selecting Your Pet’s Caregiver
Expert tips for making the best choice
BY ERIN CHAPPELEAR, dogwalker, etc.
SWhen Island Dog Magazine started in 2008, Erin Chappelear of dogwalker, etc. was already a COG (Canine Original Gangster) in the local dog community. We felt lucky to have her as one of our first advertisers, and she’s still going strong! We asked Erin how she integrates her business services with the needs of Oahu’s local dog owners—what to expect, and how to prepare for a trip.
electing the right caregiver for your beloved pet is a crucial decision that requires careful consideration. In my 23 years of experience as a dog walker and pet sitting expert, I've developed a formula to guide pet owners and help them make the best choice for their furry friends.
Home or Away?
The first decision to make is where your pet will stay during your absence: home or away? For lengthy trips, keeping your pet at home in his familiar environment or choosing a private boarding setting in smaller homes can be ideal. Larger facilities, while excellent for some dogs, may overwhelm quieter or only dog companions. Tailor your decision to your pet’s personality and preferences.

Friends and family can be reliable choices for pet care, and may help create a support system. However, having a professional caregiver at hand can address potential gaps in coverage. Our range of services includes having staff members stay at the pet’s home, multiple daily visits, overnight stays, and private boarding options. We often seamlessly integrate our services and a client’s existing arrangements with expertise and reliability.
Professional Caregivers
Longevity in the business is a crucial factor for you to consider as it indicates dedication, ensuring consistent and high quality care for your pet. Establishing a relationship with a reputable company gives you a reliable level of care during each trip. When looking for a professional caregiver, evaluate their experience, insurance coverages, state licenses, and professional certificates.
Before services commence, an initial meeting is crucial to discuss the care plan. Be prepared to provide basic information about your pet’s needs— home, medication, walking routines and leash behaviors. Think about your “in case of emergency” contacts and make sure all information is accurate and up-to-date. Your caregiver will appreciate your attention to these details. Experience matters here, as it can prevent potential issues that might result in unexpected vet bills.
While cost is a consideration, opting for the cheapest price can sometimes lead to health or behavioral problems for your pet.
We prioritize consistency by assigning the same caregiver or a complementary substitute for every pet’s needs. You may have an older friend or family member for house and petsitting who may be less enthusiastic about daily dog walks due to balance and mobility issues. Or a friend might offer to sleep over and look after your pet, but has commitments during the day. We can help! A professional dog walker can be scheduled to supplement your pet’s activity schedule. Someone can also be scheduled to stay overnight or provide coverage during the day when other caregivers are unavailable, providing seamless care and attention.
Technology allows for daily updates. You will be connected with your

Share an island experience with a shelter dog!
Go on an adventure with a shelter dog, or bring him home for the day to cuddle up and watch a movie. Either way, enjoying their love and companionship is fun and rewarding, especially for our shelter pets. It’s great for their mental health and helps them get adopted.
Chaperones will receive a backpack for the day which includes a towel, dog treats, water and bowl, and poop bags. All dogs will be fitted with a martingale collar or harness and leash. To keep our animals safe, please leave personal pets at home, avoid dog parks and provide lots of water and, of course, love and attention throughout the trip.

Ay, Chihuahua!
BY CLAIRE CHING, Chihuahua Club of Hawaii
The Chihuahua Club of Hawaii (CCH) was started 26 years ago in 1998 by a small group of friends who originally met on the internet. We began as a social club, but as we grew, new members helped to organize and structure the group. CCH was formalized in 1999 with a full board of officers, bylaws, and a constitution.
We achieved milestones starting in 2002 when CCH was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. Twenty years later in March, 2022 we won approval to have our first AKC Chihuahua Specialty. A specialty is an AKC-sanctioned conformation show for a particular breed. Our second Specialty event was held in September 2023. CCH is also a member of the Chihuahua Club of America.
Our 63 club members and their Chis enjoy a variety of events throughout the year, such as holiday parties for
Easter, Halloween and Christmas, the Chihuahua Olympics, nursing home visits, and fashion shows. Party activities include costume or dress up contests, an Easter egg hunt, relays, and various games. Our current venue allows our Chi pack to go off-leash and enjoy a large area to run, play and socialize.
The Chihuahua Club offers opportunities to participate in community service with our dog(s). The club also has activities which enable our little dog(s) to socialize with other chi's and feel safe.

together by this foundation—the love of this wonderful little dog... and to have fun! We never lose sight of this important reason for our community. Please consider joining our Clan of Chihuahuas. We’ll welcome you with open arms and paws!
The Chihuahua Club of Hawaii’s website is chock-full of information. Find information about the club, a Calendar of Events for the year, and how to become a member. Check our breeder page if you are looking for a Chihuahua, or email us. IDM
Being a member of the Chihuahua Club of Hawaii is an exhilarating experience that fills me with joy and a sense of belonging. The camaraderie shared among fellow Chihuahua enthusiasts is heartwarming, and the love we all have for this delightful breed is palpable. Owning a Chihuahua is a unique pleasure. Their compact size makes them perfect companions for any adventure, and their spirited and charming personalities never fail to bring a smile to my face.

CPR: Can Pets Recover?
Jessica Sun, DVM DACVECC
CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation is started when the lungs or heart (or both) of a patient stop. In medical terms, we often call this “arrest,” meaning that the body has stopped or arrested. Similar to people CPR, we start with chest compressions and breathing. In the hospital, we also have the advantage of being able to secure their airway, breathe more effectively and supply oxygen, give them medications to help the heart, hook them up to advanced monitoring, and provide them with the intensive aftercare that these patients require. While only a very few lucky patients come back to us with CPR and make it home, an experienced team, advanced medical equipment and emergency and critical care specialist veterinarians can improve their chances —we have all of these at VCA Family and Oahu Veterinary Specialty Center. We have two emergency and critical care specialists here, one of which is always on call (even after hours and on overnights) that oversee our intensive care unit and patients.
What should you do if your pet arrests?
If your pet arrests, minutes matter.
Start chest compressions—for most dogs it should be done at the highest point of the chest, aiming to compress about 50% of the depth of the chest, and at a rate of 100120 beats per minute. Using songs like “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, “Eye Of The Tiger” by Survivor, “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga, and “Let’s Get It Started” by the Black Eyed Peas can be helpful in determining the right speed.
Once you start compressions, the best thing to do is bring them to your nearest emergency veterinary facility ASAP! Minutes matter!
Our emergency department is open 24/7 for both transfers for intensive care and pet emergencies.
At VCA, your pet’s health is our top priority and excellent service is our goal. We provide the very best medicine by offering a full range of services including primary, emergency, surgical and specialty all in one building. Our veterinarians and team treat your pet with the same level of care they would give to their own pet.
