Saving Lives, and Supporting the Community

The Oahu SPCA was founded to save the lives of companion animals across the islands. For more than 13 years, we have improved the lives of homeless, feral, abandoned, and surrendered dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies throughout Hawaii, becoming much more than the first no-kill animal shelter in the state.

Sterilization saves lives! We provide affordable veterinary services and the lowest cost sterilization available to the public. This eliminates animal overpopulation and abandonment due to the high costs of veterinary care. The number of homeless animals has been reduced by more than

50% since 2010. We also provide community services by rescuing and rehabilitating stray, abandoned, or relinquished pets. We provide adoption services and volunteer opportunities. Our sterilization program helps protect the islands by spaying and neutering animals, dramatically reducing the number of stray animals.

Now, more than ever, is the time to save the lives of cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies and give support to the families who love and care for them. Our Clinic’s services proceeds go to our rescued animals, and you can donate at: oahuspca.org/donate.

You Can Help

Oahu SPCA is not part of any other SPCA or humane society. We operate and raise all funds independently. Every dollar that you contribute has a significant impact on our mission. Please join in this important work today by donating at:

808.754.1519 or OahuSPCA.org/donate

Proceeds of the Oahu SPCA Veterinary Clinic services go to the care of our rescued animals. Donations are always welcome.

Let the Howlidaze Begin!

Welcome to Fabulous Furry Fall, Hawaiian Style! Welcome to Football (Go Braddahood)! A new School Year! Halloween! And, just in time for our Howlidaze edition, Thanksgiving! After the slow burn of Covid through 20-22, this year is just flying by. But not so fast that we can’t stop to appreciate the doggie doings happening right now. To wit:

Our cover is filled by the cuuuuute countenance of Richard, a Chinese Crested Powderpuff captured by lensgal Kelli Bullock Hergert. And our Da Kine Canine photo gallery is filled to the gills with six pages of your delish doggo documentation. Plus! A bonus page of Pups & Peeps because you guys love to be seen in the company of canines. Yay! Keep em coming ‘cause next issue will feature “All Dressed Up,” and we know you got some.

Our feature story is on Leah Lukela’s imagination factory Dis-and-Bark, progenitor of both mock and startlingly true depictions of island cuisine. We proudly present our 8th Annual Pet Services Directory to guide you in your quest for pupper perfection in everything from boarding and daycare to poop pickup. Covered!

The Pet Hui’s Pet Star photo contest is always a howling fun treat, and the latest Windward Dog Park update shows a site finally coming to fruition. Congrats!

All this, plus a classic John Pritchett cartoon exploring tall tails and buried treasure, makes for a filial finish for Fall, indeed!

And, as always, we are ever so grateful for your pause to refresh at the wellspring of our little dog rag, and for letting our advertisers know that you saw them here. Hear-Hear!

Woofs & Wags, John and Carol

Richard was born on July 31, 2022, one of three siblings. A Chinese Crested Powderpuff, Richard is named after his Vet, who found him for me.

His personality matches his breed characteristics: lively, loving, and with a kind and gentle nature towards people. He loves belly rubs and to be carried and cuddled.

Chinese Crested Powderpuffs have also been nicknamed “Velcro Dogs.” Richard is very attached to his Papa and will get upset and throw tantrums if he is not near him constantly, another breed characteristic. Luckily, Richard goes to work with me and you can meet us at Enchanted Lake Pet store daily.

He is also a great watch dog. In the mornings when the store is not yet open, and someone approaches the front door, he will bark until they leave.

Everyone that meets Richard falls in love with him.

Toying With Our Food

Native Hawaiian Leah Lukela, the irrepressible force behind Dis-and-Bark Dog Toys, felt unseen as a local when she entered pet stores. So she decided to do something about it. We asked Leah to share her story…

John: How did you get started?

Leah: My husband TJ and I, when we got together, decided not to have kids. It just wasn’t in the cards for us. We wanted to do something different. But we still wanted to be parents in a way, so we decided to be dog parents!

Part of parenting is passing your culture down to your kids. I felt a disconnect with that. It’s like, how do I involve my dog Rollo, who is my child, in passing my culture down? I’m native Hawaiian, and when I go into toy stores or pet stores I don’t feel like there’s recognition for my ethnicity. Hawaii is the melting pot of ethnicities, and I didn’t want people to feel like I felt. And I thought, “That’s a problem!”

And so I make toys that help us connect, because together we are an ethnicity with food worth recognizing, and I want people to see my stuff and instantly feel like, ”This was created for me!” I want people to feel like, “We can pass our culture down to our furry kids, too.”

John: How did you grow a business?

Leah: I started my business off of my stimulus check and I’ve just thrown everything back into it, time and time again with each shipment, and it's just grown!

Plus, I spend hours every week drawing things that I wish existed.

My first product was the Rainbow Shave Ice, and in the beginning, any hits that I would get on Instagram, I would traffic it over to our website. So the day we opened was very exciting because we got six orders! And I remember being so ecstatic that six people were interested in my stuff! It was a really, really big deal to me.

Then the Spam Musubi dropped, and that had three pieces. I think this was the first toy to showcase the difference between Dis-and-Bark and other toy companies, because I want people to

look at my stuff and have a little giggle. You’re like, “Wait, this comes apart?” Yes!

The third time was my first sell-out. It was also the first time I could afford to make two toys at once. So I dropped the Lau Lau, which had the pig in it, and I dropped the Shoyu Bottle, and we sold everything in one day! Gone. It was a crazy day!

My online traffic is my biggest stream of revenue, even with 35 wholesale accounts. The community of people who follow us—the dog community—are very attached to supporting Dis-andBark fully. And I think that’s beautiful. I’ve always been a person who goes to

events and pop-ups, and I do a lot of supporting local also, and it’s really cool that coming out of the Pandemic so many people have the mind-set “To keep these businesses around, we need to support them.”

John: What stores are you in?

Leah: We’re in a lot of hotel stores through The Food Pantry, and we’re in The Public Pet in Kaimuki, Pet Depot in Ewa Beach and my favorite store, Enchanted Lake Pets in Kailua. They were my first, so they’re my favorite!

I’m originally from Enchanted Lakes when I was a baby, but I grew up in Waianae. I feel like Waianae gets a bad rep, and a lot of people look down on Waianae High School, but I’m a proud grad. Everything I’ve learned, I’ve taught myself to do, and I want everyone there to know that they can do it too!

John: Some toys are fanciful takes on local products and some use brand names. How does that work?

Leah: Sometimes we’re just talking story and decide it would be a great idea to collaborate. Zippy’s reached out to me for the Zip Pack, I reached out to the Asato family for the Sherbet, and also to HI Cravings for the Acai Bowl. Matsumoto’s reached out to me, and I was so excited because every year on our anniversary we put out a new version of our first toy, Shave Ice, so this year’s version is Matsumoto’s!

John: Where did the name Dis-and-Bark come from?

Leah: I wanted it to have local flair but also be a brand that could go worldwide. Dis-and-Bark sounds a little pigeon, but it’s a play on “disembark,” which is to off-board from something and onboard onto something new. So this is me disembarking onto a new chapter of my life!

CANINE BEHAVIORAL PSYCHOLOGY

New Baby, New Behaviors, New Boundaries

CASE STUDY

When bringing home a newborn baby, it can be easy to lose sight of how our dogs are affected.

PATIENT: ”Katsu”— 4 year old female Poi dog.

SYMPTOMS: “Katsu’s” owners reached out to us about her sudden behavior change. Seemingly overnight, the “perfect” easy-going, playful and carefree pup that went everywhere with them started barking at them, pulling on walks, and refusing to go out for hikes which she normally loved. They worried about what was going on with Katsu, and were concerned about her unpredictable behavior around their newborn baby.

DIAGNOSIS: We detailed the background on Katsu to understand her perspective and determined what was causing this sudden shift. The first month after baby came home was great; Katsu was curious about the new human in her home. But when she got within a foot of the baby, one of her owners would shout at her to back her away. Walks became shorter and less frequent. When baby cried, Katsu’s owners would rush to pick her up, stopping in the middle of playing with or giving attention to their dog. Then she figured out that barking at her owners would get them to look at her and gain their attention back. Katsu began associating the presence of the baby with her owners becoming scary and unpredictable. So when the family was ready to start going for hikes again, Katsu refused to get in the car.

SOLUTION: Katsu’s behavior change came from negative associations with the baby, combined with frustrations from a decrease in her physical, mental, and emotional engagement.

So we set a schedule for walks and play that Katsu’s owners could adhere to reliably, providing consistent exercise and times for her and her owners to spend together one-on-one. Next, we allocated

safe and supervised time for Katsu to be around the baby where her calm behaviors could be rewarded. This taught her what was expected around the baby, and what behaviors she could engage in to get away. Barking subsided as her frustrations decreased. Finally, we realized Katsu was not avoiding hikes but car rides with the baby, who was now coming along. We utilized a crate in the car to keep them separated and made a point to go on outings and hikes with and without the baby, which helped Katsu gradually adjust to baby’s presence.

From basic training to advanced behavior challenges and aggression, we help owners and dogs live happier, healthier, and more enriched lives together. We focus on helping owners to understand their dog, communicate wishes, and train desirable behaviors while reducing undesirable ones.

If you are bringing a new dog or baby home, or are struggling to navigate dynamics with your dog, reach out to us via email (Sean@apetperspective. com), phone (808) 202-0897, or fill out an Evaluation Request at www.APetPerspective.com and we’d be happy to create a behavior plan based on your dog's specific needs and history.

Doggie Due Diligence

Whether you’re looking for a groomer, pet care professional or trainer, make time to research and have a list of questions ready. Websites and social media can provide insight into business philosophy. Mention any special needs your dog may have. Ask for references. If applicable ask if licensed, bonded and insured, and about contingency plans in case of emergency or natural disaster. Don’t wait until the last minute; as a new client it may take extra time to set up and schedule a new account.

Pet care services can book up quickly, especially during busy holiday seasons. Your dog should be up-to-date on vaccinations and monthlies.

The Windward Side, Off-Leash At Last

Opening Soon—Kahua O Waikalua Dog Park, Oahu’s Long-Awaited Off-Leash Dog Park

It’s been a long haul, but the Windward community will soon get its much anticipated off-leash dog park, the first in the region. Although no official opening date has yet been announced, the dog park is nearly ready to welcome its four-legged friends. Named Kahua O Waikalua by the city, the approximately two-acre fenced parcel sits between the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant and Bayview Golf Course in Kaneohe. Features include separate fencedin large and small dog areas, water fountains, a restroom, shady monkeypod trees, and ample parking.

The City Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) “has done a great job outfitting the park with the basics,” said Janine Tully, president of the Windward Dog Park Hui (WDPH), a non-profit group that has advocated for the dog

park for nearly 10 years. “We will provide some of the improvements such as memorial benches, waste bags, and cover other operational costs.”

District 3 Council Member Esther Kia‘a - ina secured $250,000 as part of the Fiscal Year 2023 DPR budget and is working with Bayview Golf Course officials to move Hole #7 to keep errant golf balls from landing in the dog park. But public funds cannot be used for this realignment, so the Hui has launched the Kahua O Waikalua Safety Plan Fundraising Campaign, according to Marcia Murakami, fundraising committee chair.

Throughout the years, WDPH has worked to build a safe place where Windward residents can meet and “talk story" along with their furry companions. It has also won the support of two major Windward foundations, the Minami

Community Foundation and the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation, which have provided significant contributions: one grant for the safety project and one grant for future amenities.

In 2015, the Windward Dog Park Organization passed the baton to the Windward Dog Park Hui. “That group did a lot of the legal groundwork,” said Tully. “We will not forget them or their vision for our community.” WDPH continues its mission of creating an off-leash dog park as a vital community asset.

Halloween Safety for Pets

• Keep all things bright, shiny and potentially tasty out of reach, especially that candy bowl. Chocolates and the sugar substitute xylitol are toxic. If you suspect ingestion, call your vet or the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline at 888-426-4435.

• Dressing up is fun, but don’t costume your pet if it causes undue stress, such as limiting movement or airflow. Opt for a colorful bandana.

• The excitement of trick or treaters at the door may be too much for some pets—they may prefer being in a quiet room or even a crate. Keep escape artists/bolters away from the front door. ID your dog with a microchip, collar and tag. In the event your dog slips out, these will make it easier to reunite you and your dog.

Dangers of Grain-Free Pet Foods

When you head to the pet store, grain-free diets are everywhere. However, they are not safe for pets! Grain-free diets have become popular due to some common misconceptions, including:

Food Allergies – many believe that pets have food allergies to grain or that this is hard on the stomach. In reality, the most common cause of food allergies is protein such as beef, dairy and chicken in dogs, and beef, dairy and fish in cats.

Digestibility – many companies like to advertise how our dogs are descendants of wolves and cats are carnivores so they cannot digest grains in pet foods. In reality, grinding and cooking grains in pet foods actually makes them highly digestible and equal to that of meat-based ingredients.

Cheap Filler - many companies advertise that grains are cheap fillers in pet food. In reality, grains are an important part of a balanced diet. Although feeding a grain-free diet may seem like a popular option, the US Food and Drug administration and veterinarians do not recommend grain-free diets due to the potential to cause serious, life-threatening heart issues. Signs of this include: collapse, difficulty breathing, weakness, and pale gums.

For more information, you can search for “FDA grain-free diets.” Feeding the right food is one the best ways you can help maintain a happy and healthy pet, but choosing the right one can be confusing. Our doctors here at VCA Family and Oahu Veterinary Specialty Center are here to help! For nutritional advice, call us to schedule an appointment today! If your pet develops any of these symptoms often associated with heart issues, our Emergency Department is open 24/7. We are here for you!.

At VCA, your pet’s health is our top priority and excellent service is our goal. We provide the very best medicine by offering a full range of services including primary, emergency, surgical and specialty all in one building. Our veterinarians and team treat your pet with the same level of care they would give to their own pet.
