He’s the new Top Dog on Hawaii Five-0, and his owner is Top Trainer Sue Chipperton, who tells both their tales in our feature story. Sue even trained the Aflac duck! Fans have always slobbered over Steve and drooled over Danno. But it’s the newest cast member of Hawaii Five-0 who gets our tails wagging: Eddie!
Eddie Five-0 After the cover shoot, Island Dog sat down with his owner and trainer, Sue Chipperton, who shared tales of Eddie and her own fascinating story of a life training animals. STORY BY JOHN HARMON OPENING PHOTO BY ASHLEY SMITH
ID: What’s it like working with your dog? Sue: It’s fabulous! You get up, put your dog in the car, and go to work with him. And get paid! ID: And he brings home the paycheck! Sue: It couldn’t be any better, really. I love it! And nobody knows him better. Sometimes little idiosyncrasies come up working with other peoples’ dogs on set, like, “Oh, I didn’t realize that dog doesn’t like men in hats.” But with Eddie, I pretty much know what he’s thinking. ID: Tell us about Eddie. Sue: Eddie is the most loving dog I’ve ever had. He loves every living creature, whether it’s a human or a cow or a goat or a kitten or a duck. He wants to meet it. He wants to kiss it. The ranch that we live on has cows and horses and sheep and goats and some of them come up to where Eddie can just get his head through the fence. I’ll look down and he’ll be washing the head of a cow, licking it furiously. Then the cows line up, even a couple of goats, and it’s like Eddie’s Drive-Thru Cow Wash! He also wants to do that with every person he meets, so it can be challenging when we’re working and I need him to focus.

done I drove them back, and I met one of the breeder’s adult dogs who was this beautiful deep red male Lab. He was just about a year old, and I said “When you breed him I want one of his puppies!” So a couple of years later from his first litter I got Eddie. A friend took care of him for me while he was waiting to clear the titer test for rabies, but I got to meet him at four months old. I took him to my sister’s house for a week and then had to pass him back to my friend. He didn’t actually get here until he was ten months old. And just a few months later he landed his first job in a Hawaiian Telcom commercial. ID: How did you get started in the animal training business? Sue: I grew up in England and moved to the States when I was 18. I worked at Marine

ID: What about Eddie the actor? Sue: Eddie’s a typical Lab. People have this idea in their head of a lab laying on a porch, all chill and laid back, the iconic ‘porch dog’ so they rush out and buy themselves a lab... Well, they do eventually become that dog, but it’s when they turn five or six years old. As puppies and young dogs, they’re a challenge. That’s why on the mainland more than here, you find a lot of them at shelters and rescues because at a year old, people can’t handle them. So it’s a lot, even for me as a trainer it’s a lot, because every moment is a teaching moment. Every. Single. Moment. With a Border Collie or a German Shepard, when you tell them to do a “down-stay” they’re like, “OK!”, and they don’t move from that spot until you release them. Eddie would be reset about 10 times. When you’d say “Stay!” and walk away, you’d turn around and find he’s following you. But now he’s almost three years old and he’s maturing, so it does pay off in the end. The average person with very little dog experience doesn’t realize the payoff to a great dog could be three to four years down the road (If...they do it right!). The hardest part about working Eddie on the 5-0 set is the energy level. Sometimes it’s really high, just because of the scene we’re shooting. I have to try and maintain a calm, focused dog even though I know he’s itching to run around with the cast and get in on their action...which of course isn’t scripted. ID: How did you choose him? Sue: In 2013, I was working on the Budweiser (Clydesdale) Super Bowl commercial, and we had a litter of ten-week old puppies from a breeder in Oregon. There were eight puppies so they could double for each other. These were some of the best puppies of any breed that I had ever trained. Confident, smart, brave, just amazing pups. Life Park in Florida training dolphins and sea lions. I met people there who had friends in Hollywood who did pretty much what I do now. After three years, I packed up and moved to LA to try working with other animals. I made the rounds, and landed at Studio Animal Services in 1994, and stayed there for 21 years. I started as an intern and worked my way up to head trainer and supervisor. I did everything—TV series, commercials, movies and print.

I even went to Japan and shot five Aflac commercials there. The majority of my work in Hollywood was commercials, mostly dog food and cat food commercials.
ID: How is training a duck different than training a dog? Sue: Well, training most anything other than a dog is 100% food. some were better at running from A to B and some were better at staying on a mark. It just depended on what the action was for that particular shot. ID: How did you come to Hawaii? Sue: I worked on the movie Godzilla in 2013, and one of the local production people suggested that I move here and start my own company because there was no one else doing what I do. I was looking for someplace else to go from Los Angeles, and there were markets opening up for film like New Orleans and Atlanta because of their tax breaks. But I liked Hawaii, and in early 2014 I got an offer to work on Jurassic World and that was the start of it. And it worked out great! ID: 5-0 seems really dog friendly. Sue: They’re extremely dog friendly. It’s the best show to work on. There are dogs in their production offices because people bring their dogs to work. Most of the cast have dogs. Alex especially loves Eddie. Whenever Alex happens to pass by and see Eddie, whether he’s working with him that day or not, he always wants to say hello to him. He comes over and falls to the ground and starts petting him. Which as a trainer can be a challenge because he’s a young Lab and it can make him start acting all goofy when I’m trying to make him concentrate on what he’s doing. But of course, I wouldn’t have it any other way! I love that they all love him at 5-0 and that’s the most important thing. It’s no fun working with people who don’t like dogs.
