SPRING 2022• ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 13

HALIA BY MARK COBERLY

Aloha, and welcome to the 15th Spring edition of our little dog mag! Yes, thanks to you, dear reader, we have not only survived but have thrived in our own small way. We launched in Spring of 2008, the beginning of the Great Recession, and have published every quarter since. We are humbled and grateful for the continued kindness of your attention in this most digital of ages. Arf! And what a fun- and fact-filled issue we have! It all starts with our Cover Boy, Ziggy, whose smile lights up the room. And our magazine, of course. And our Da Kine Canine photo gallery is fully furnished with Furballs, including Puppies! Yay! Next up is “Pups & Peeps,” where you get to shine in the reflected glow of your pooch’s dazzling cuteness. So send ‘em in! We are proud to present our 10th Annual Oahu Veterinary Directory, listing all of the vets at all of the facilities on the island. We had to add a page this year, with so many places expanding their rosters in this climate of folks feeling even closer to their pets when they can’t be closer to humans. Our advertisers have a highlighted background, so choose wisely. The mysteries of the anal glands are (sort of) revealed, and we remind you to register your pet’s microchip with a national registry along with some tips to make it easier. Plus, our Off-Leash Dog Park Listings are all up to date, and our Gifts & Sniffs finds are just waiting for your approval. Your pup already said yes! All this, not to mention resident artist John Pritchett ruminating on robotic fuzz, makes for a fine fifteenth for sure! Thanks again for your support, and for thanking our advertisers for their support. It’s a big dog-loving ohana, and we are so happy to be in it with you. Woofs & Wags, John and Carol 14 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SPRING 2022

iggy was given to us by a good friend who actually thought the litter was supposed to be a full-breed bully. But instead they came out all fluffy! They were in denial for awhile, but then realized his mom was accidentally left with a German Shepherd at daycare a little too long, so…voila! We were so lucky to have been there to witness his birth. Ziggy was the runt of the litter and had our hearts at day one. He also pooped on me the first time I held him, so I feel like he chose me as well! The love he gives to our family is priceless. He makes us laugh and sometimes makes us cry (I lost about 30 pairs of shoes to him when he was a puppy). He’s our pride and joy and our forever baby. We are so happy to share his infectious smile with the world. — Amber Ziggy Facts: • Turned 5 years old on January 31st. • He is a German Shepherd/Bully mix. • Loves his ball, playing in the water, long walks, cuddles and kisses always. • Sleeps in bed with his hoomans and always takes up more than his share. • Best big bro to bunny brother Halo.

Microchip Registry Implanting the microchip is only the first step. Register the chip number to ensure a successful reunion with a lost pet.

I

n 2020 the City and County of Honolulu replaced the dog licensing system with a microchip identification requirement for all pet dogs 3 months and older and cats 4 months and older. And the Hawaiian Humane Society no longer keeps a database of local chipped pets. But you can greatly increase the chances of a reunion with a lost pet by signing up with a registry. Background: Unlike a license tag that can be lost, once a microchip is implanted it is permanent. The chip ID is not a GPS tracker and only activates when being scanned to reveal a number unique to your pet. Most veterinary clinics and many animal welfare nonprofit organizations do microchip implants. Just make an appointment; it’s quick and painless! Some inserting organizations register your information with a database automatically. If so, you should get a confirmation e-mail from the registry (most likely the manufacturer) in a day or so. In any case, write down the number and manufacturer for reference. What if your pet’s already chipped, but you’ve lost, forgotten, or don't know the number? First, call the place where you got the chip and ask if they have it on record. Otherwise, vet clinics and non-profits have hand scanners that will read the vast array of chips. If you know the chip number but don’t know the manufacturer, visit the pet microchip look-up website provided by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA): petmicrochiplookup.org. Google microchip lookup and it’s on the first page. Once you know your pet’s chip number and manufacturer, Congrats—you have the two pieces of information needed to go online and register the chip. If you move, change your 30 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SPRING 2022

phone or e-mail address, or rehome your pet, you can update your contact information online. A tag or collar with the owner’s phone number is still helpful. If your pet is loose in the hood, an ID tag or collar allows a Good Neighbor to help him get back to his home. List of Common Microchip Registries Note that some are free, some are paid, and they all will try for an upsell.

At the vet clinic, Tina’s doctor manually s I settled in to binge-watch the latest series du jour on Netflix, my 14-year-old Chihuahua/Fox Terrier Tina came into view as she did the Butt Scoot Boogie across my light oatmeal Berber carpet. This was followed by sniffing over the freshly anointed path and then settling into some vigorous bottom diving. I read about this scooting behavior related to the anal glands and that this was an attempt to alleviate the impacted sensations. The intensity and agitation suggested a trip to the vet.

Specializing in Major Canine Problem Behavior Rehabilitation, and Human Training Specializing in problem behavior Sean Riley rehabilitation For appointments

(808) 202-0897 Sean@apetperspective.com @APetPerspective CANINE BEHAVIORAL PSYCHOLOGY

“A holistic approach www.apetperspective.com to canine behavior”

Protective or Aggressive: Can one lead to the other? Specializing in aggression is sometimes complicated, but getting to the root of what caused the behavior is always the best place to start. Then treat the cause, not the symptoms.

PATIENT Keao, a 3 year old Pit Bull SCENARIO Court Order Bite Case: Dog bite to young female outside the home. Post lawsuit, court ordered the dog to always be muzzled, and owner to seek behavioral rehabilitation training for the dog to address aggression. SYMPTOMS Dog would immediately bite, growl, bark, and lunge at anyone who approached her when with her owner. DIAGNOSIS Severe Dog-to-Human Fear Based, Proximity Related Aggression

K

eao is a sweet and loving Pit Bull. She especially loves to play and chase things with her owner. However, if any one approaches them, whether it is a known or unknown individual, Keao instantly transforms into a modern day “Cujo” — barking, lunging, growling, and biting if given the opportunity (Yuuuup, I speak from experience; she did get me one time during the evaluation and once after slipping out of her muzzle). I observed that her aggression, though looking intense, appeared to be coming from fear. An investigation revealed the catalyst to this behavior: when the owner’s little sister was a toddler and Keao was still young, the family was naturally nervous about a large pit bull around the child. As Keao got more curious, her owners got more stern with keeping her away from the child. Keao began to growl when the baby approached, resulting in the owner scolding Keao any time the baby got close. Over time, in Keao’s perspective, this created 42 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SPRING 2022

the belief that when others approached her owner, her owner became scary and unpredictable. As a result, she started to show aggression to anyone approaching her and her owner, with the intent of keeping them away.

SOLUTION We taught the owner how to read Keao’s body language so he could tell when she began to feel uncomfortable, particularly when someone was getting too close for comfort. We then employed a desensitization and counter-conditioning protocol to reduce her anxiety around other people. Over 18 hours of work, we got her comfortable enough around people that I not only sat next to her and her owner, but was able to reach over and shake her owner’s hand without her reacting at all! Learning Never Stops, and there’s no such thing as a “Bad Dog,” so if you have a challenging dog with even more challenging behaviors, let us know and we’d be happy to help you and your pup understand each other better.

Sean with a rehabilitated Keao and her owner.

CBD & Your Dog’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a natural oil extracted from the flowers and CandBDleaves of the cannabis plant. CBD is used by people animals all over the world and can help dogs with

anxiety, itching, arthritis, and possibly even cancer! Modern science has identified a family of molecules as endocannabinoids, as well as the endocannabinoid system (ECS) of animals and how CBD may promote general health and wellness from the inside out. Endocannabinoids produced naturally by our dogs are signaling molecules called neurotransmitters. Hormones are a more familiar type of neurotransmitter. These endocannabinoids work with the dogs’ ECS to instruct their bodies to adjust their activities, bringing their bodies back to a naturally balanced state called ‘Homeostasis.’ Due to many factors, (age, genetics, lifestyle, etc.) the ECS can lose some of its power to produce endocannabinoids when needed and your dog is always in a state of ‘Imbalance.’ This is why strategic supplementation of CBD from plants (Phytocannabinoids), can be so helpful. How small is Nano? One Nanometer (nm) is one-billionth of a meter. Here are some examples. • A sheet of paper is about 100,000 nm thick • A human hair is about 80,000-100,000 nm thick

• A sphere with a diameter of 1 nm is to a softball, as a softball is to the earth. Nano CBD compared to Regular CBD Oil

So why is Nano better? Oil doesn’t dissolve in water, so your dogs’ mucous membrane in their mouth will repel regular CBD Oil without truly absorbing it. Our Nano Technology breaks down the large balls of regular CBD Oil to a microscopic size and the Nanoized CBD Oil is now ‘Water Soluble.’ The body can quickly and more readily absorb almost all of the CBD! This is called ‘High Bioavailability.’ So, more is less, and your dog will get much more from what you have. Nano Nano CBD will help with: • Allergies & Scratching • Stiffness & Mobility issues • Anxiety & Stress • Promotes total Balance throughout your Dog’s entire body!

Take ‘Scratching’ out of a Dog’s Life !!!
