One of the most rewarding aspects of being part of the team at VERC is witnessing first-hand the resolute concern, compassion and dedication with which our co-workers practice their craft every single day.
Neglected, malnourished, and left to die, this poor little guy was found in a dumpster. We named him Cheddar on account of his orange coat.
I
Cheddar Gets Better
n our five years + of round-the-clock emergency and specialty care, there have been countless cases where owners and organizations have turned to us with patients in dire need of advanced veterinary care. One of our great joys when these cases are successfully treated is experiencing the happiness of the owners and their beloved pets when they are reunited, and their faithful companions are on the road to recovery. All of the years of college, specialty training, advanced medical equipment, love and support we bestow as the dedicated caretakers of our client’s pets culminate in true joy when tragedy and pain are left behind and replaced by hopefulness and health.
One case that has always served to epitomize the positive impact that can be realized by the quality of care that is delivered at VERC is our little friend Cheddar. Cheddar has had some rough spots in his canine life, not always landing in the best home or the best situation. We aren’t sure of all of the events that led to the day when Cheddar’s life was turned around. But we do know that he was helped by our friends at the Hawaiian Humane Society and local law enforcement officers when he was found in a dumpster, left to die. It was a heartbreaking situation, to say the least, and Cheddar was in pretty dire straits when his weak, withered body was brought to
Surprise! Loving care brought out his true colors. Healthy Cheddar is now white.
VERC. He was suffering from a litany of health problems including hookworms, anemia, an ulcerated cornea, dehydration, malnutrition, and overall abuse and neglect. Much of his fur was missing, and the little orange fur that was remaining was thin and patchy. He couldn’t move or lift himself up. Cheddar was suffering, and his prognosis was pretty bleak. Our doctors and staff began 24-hour intensive care with Cheddar. And after many weeks, we began to see the spark of Cheddar’s former self. He slowly regained his strength and cognition. Surprisingly, little Cheddar was not shy or timid around our technicians or doctors. He would wag his little tail whenever one of our staff members would pay him a visit. After more weeks of care, Cheddar was able to move around and started putting on some weight. Our team was so excited when he gained a kilo, that he received special recognition and a sign announcing his progress. More time passed and one of Cheddar’s
more notable changes was that his fur was not naturally orange at all. His new healthy coat was growing back white! During his recovery and fight back to full health, many of our staff voiced interest in becoming Cheddar’s new “forever home.” When the Hawaiian Humane Society determined that Cheddar was ready to be fostered, he didn’t have to look far. One of VERC’s team members fostered and then adopted little Cheddar. He is now healthy, happy and in a home with his hanai family where he is cared for and loved. Surprisingly, Cheddar doesn’t seem to be too traumatized by his past and seems content to focus on the moment and the well-being he experiences today. Just a friendly pat on the head or a scratch of his back brings a smile and wag from Cheddar’s little body. Of course, a day at the beach or going on a walk always brings a bounce to his step, too. Cheddar is a normal, happy, healthy dog again and that’s how all of us here at VERC who cared so much for him, like it to be.

E Komo Mai...welcome to our 10th Summer Fun edition! And boy, have you come to the right place to revel in the myriad ways to share with our dogs the longer, languid days. So in honor of the season, we serve up this feast of an issue as a Beach Bar-B-Q! First, we fire up the coals with a great Cover shot of Ringo captured by local pet photographer Deb McGuire. This only whets your appetite for heavy pupus to come: Deb’s visual and lyrical story on Hawaii’s wonderful water dogs. Next, Bonnie Beatson puts the shrimp on the barbie with an update on Windward Community College’s Veterinary Technology Program, which certifies graduates so they can pursue careers in the veterinary field. And of course we crack open a cold one with you, our loyal readers, who have filled our Da Kine Canine Gallery with a banquet of photos of your furry friends. The Pups & Peeps section is scrumptious! Next up is Dogs in the Great Outdoors, so be sure to document your pup’s adventures and email them to us! Now the burgers and wienies are served with Margaret Toilolo’s special recipes for making sure your dog flies as safely and comfortably as possible by utilizing Hawaiian Air Cargo. Why wing it when you can ask an expert? Then it’s two scoops rice, mac salad and a ukulele interlude as we tell the tail of bluesman Tom Hinson: First he adopted a dog, then he adopted the dog park! And finally it’s roasted marshmallows and s’mores time with resident artists John Pritchett and Daniel Van Zyle cooking up their takes on why cats aren’t man’s best friend and the Canine Wonder from Down Under, respectively. As always, we are humbled by the kindness of your attention to our little dog rag in this most digital of ages. And for telling our advertisers, who make this doggone thing possible, that you saw them here. Mahalo, and may you find plenty fine grinds and playtimes Don’t miss the 3rd Annual this summer! Ringo!
R
ingo is an eight year old, seven pound, extremely short Yorkshire Terrier. He’s a “rescue” and he was kind enough to make our home his forever home when he was about a year old. Ringo compensates for his tiny stature with his huge personality! His favorite activities are surfing and swimming. When we initially met Ringo, we immediately noticed his disproportionate love of the water. He insisted on weekly (lengthy) swims in the bathtub, splashed in puddles, loved walks in the rain, and took any opportunity to frolic in sprinklers. Being surfers, we wondered if he might enjoy the ocean as well. And he did! Wearing his life jacket and Doggles, Ringo took to waves like a fish to water. He fearlessly charges “overhead” (well, over his head) waves and frequently hops

SUMMER COVER DOG adventures, and playing in his tent with his little brother, George. Ringo’s “favorite” toy is whatever new toy comes in his monthly Barkbox subscription. Ringo is smart enough to be able to recognize the distinctive packaging and pesters relentlessly until the box is opened and access to his new toy is granted. Ringo’s favorite treats are spaghetti and ice cream. He receives them in very small quantities, very infrequently, but he keeps the kitchen under close and hopeful surveillance. Like many older brothers, he is a bit of a prankster. He particularly enjoys luring his younger but larger brother George off under false pretenses so that he can steal his toys and treats. His adorableness makes it nearly impossible to discipline him for this naughtiness. An accomplished snuggler, Ringo enjoys staying up late (in his pajamas) to watch movies and cuddle with his parents. Ringo’s absolute best times ever are visits from the Dog Spoiler (aka Grandma) and visits to Mom’s work. Ringo is our first “little” dog. We were unfamiliar with such tiny creatures and were concerned that we needed to be careful with him and that he would be mostly a lap dog. On the contrary, he is an adventurous athlete, a merry explorer, and the absolute best dog that we could ever have. We are blessed to be his parents. — Penny Parnes & Sonny Esperanza

Careers in Veterinary Technology BY BONNIE BEATSON
I
f you love caring for animals, maybe it’s time to turn it into a career option, as many students are doing at Windward Community College, the only Veterinary Technology program in the state. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of veterinary technologists and technicians is projected to grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Graduates of the Vet Tech program find employment easily both in Hawai‘i and if they move to the mainland. Local veterinary practices contact the college weekly to advertise job openings and many of the students obtain employment through the program’s internship course.
Options: One-Year Vet Assisting or Two-Year Vet Tech The Vet Assistant (VETA) program is a two-semester Certificate of Achievement and is the first year of the Vet Tech Program at Windward Community College. Veterinary assistants perform many clinical support tasks alongside veterinarians and veterinary technicians including feeding and exercising animals, restraint, basic labwork, cleaning, and more. Vet Assisting starts a new cohort of 60 students every fall. The Vet Tech (VETT) program is a two-year Associate in Science Degree and is the second year of the program. Credentialed veterinary technicians perform many of the same tasks as vet assistants, but also receive training in pharmacology, radiology, anesthesiology, surgical assisting, dentistry, nutrition and veterinary office procedures, as well as intern at clinics and/or shelters. This experience allows students to hone and apply their skills in a real-world setting and serves as a bridge to future employment. The program reached a significant milestone in the spring 2014 semester with the opening of the new $2.1 million Veterinary Technology Annex, a 2,000 square foot addition to the college’s Hale ‘Imiloa Science Complex. 40 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2017

“This is a state-of-the-art facility that we use to train our students how to use x-rays, assist in surgeries, and perform dental procedures,” said program director Jenny Kelly. “So it is very instrumental to giving a good, solid, educational background for knowledge and skills for our students.” The facility includes an x-ray room, surgery room with two surgical tables, canine ward with six kennels, feline and exotic animal ward with 16 pet condos plus a large treatment room that accurately mirrors a typical veterinary hospital or office. Windward’s program launched in 2009 as a veterinary assisting program. It earned initial accreditation as a veterinary technology program from the AVMA in 2013 and it’s up for full accreditation next year. Beginning next year, Hawai‘i law also will require new vet techs to be registered by the state and complete an accredited program. Hawai‘i is one of
the last states to require formal training or registration for the profession. The demand for locally trained vet assistants on neighbor islands has also led the college to pilot Vet Assisting programs on Maui and the Island of Hawaii through online courses at Maui College and Hawai‘i Community College at Pa-lamanui.
Information Sessions Those interested in the Vet Tech program at Windward Community College can attend a free information session on Tuesday, May 23 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Hale Pa-lanakila 102 on the Windward campus. Additional sessions are slated for June 16 and July 22. For more information, email vettech@hawaii.edu. SUMMER 2017 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 41

ho knew that back in the 1920’s when Philip Auna and his talented Terrier, Night Hawk, surfed the waves of Waikiki, they would be starting a tradition that continues today? Dogs that surf, swim and rock jump are becoming more and more familiar throughout the islands. And it’s no wonder, since Hawaii is surrounded by 750 miles of coastline just begging for dogs to take the plunge.
Bongo, a six-year-old Jack Russell Terrier originally from Australia, has been hitting the waves near the Waikiki Wall since she was a pup. Born under the sign of Pisces, it’s no wonder she loves the water. Paddling out to the line-up can be exhausting for a 14-inch fur ball, so her preferred transportation is courtesy of her champion bodyboarder dad Keith Sasaki. “Bongo’s actually pretty smart,” says her proud papa, “she’ll sit on the beach, and if there are four or five waves coming in, she won’t jump on until all waves are gone. So, she has a pretty good sense of knowing if there is surf coming in.” Bongo’s not the only four-legged SurFur. Head Ewa to White Plains Beach where a tiny Terrier named Ringo draws a crowd every time he steps paws on the board. Decked out with a pair of Doggles, neon yellow lifejacket and matching surfboard, Ringo surfs solo, as well as with his dog dad Sonny
Esperanza. A great life for a pup who was found homeless roaming the streets of Honolulu nearly seven years ago! Says Sonny, “When I catch a wave with Ringo, I try not to turn too hard or he’ll fall off. I’ll lose him for a couple of seconds.” Which can be very frightening since Ringo weighs only seven pounds and is of ankle-biter height. For those island dogs that can’t seem to get the balance thing down, there’s always body surfing. Our own dog Blarney is chocolate in color, not genetically a Lab, but he is a retriever, nonetheless. His front feet are huge and seem to be webbed. His face is broken, thanks to a primitive and brutal attempt to euthanize a helpless puppy. But, mostly, Blarney is a swimmer. Our 71-pound curious canine can be seen most mornings plunging into the beautiful blue waters off Lanikai. With an oversized green floatie toy as his target, Blarney

waits patiently for it to be thrown. At its release, Blarney leaps into action, often causing beachcombers to stop and stare as he takes flight. “I’m considering getting him his own Facebook page; he gets photographed so much!” exclaims Blarney’s Proud Pawther, Tim. Heading North to Waimea Bay, which means red water in Hawaiian, you’ll find Rusty, a red Rottweiler and his humom, Kiana Mohika-Miyashiro. Rusty’s not only rare in color but also rare in his fascination with “da big rock.” “Towers” is the highest point of the famed Waimea jumping rocks and is this camo-clad canine’s preferred jumping off point. But once he hits the water’s surface, Rusty’s adventure is still not complete. The underwater world is a whole new experience for this rowdy Rottie, but

one he is willing to explore. With eyes wide open and mouth agape, he thrusts his head beneath the water with great determination. Once fully submerged, Rusty finds himself in a chaotic confusion of bubbles, paddling paws and unpredictable currents. With his focus keenly on the task at hand, Rusty lunges forward in an attempt to accomplish his goal: Get the green toy! Bongo surfs the Walls, Ringo rides the nose of his father’s paddle board, Blarney leaps into the waves off Kailua and Rusty jumps from the North Shore’s Big Rock into the wild waters below. All these dogs and their pet parents continue a tradition started by our Aina’s famous Beach Boys generations ago. It’s a tradition to enjoy and learn from. In the words of Hawaii’s famed Duke Kahanamoku: “Just take your time— wave comes.”
Rock-jumping Rusty Rusty, our warm, loving friend and patient leader of his pack, recently succumbed to cancer. He was 11, so full of life and loved very much.

Paws Up! Air travel and your pet BY JOHN HARMON
W hat do you need to know when your pup has to travel? We checked in with Hawaiian Air Cargo’s Pet Specialist Margaret Toilolo.
I
f you will accompany your furry friend to his final destination, you can book your flight online at hawaiianairlines. com or by phone 1-800-367-5320 and check him in with you. This is simple, if you understand what paperwork you need and how to make him as comfortable as possible. Perhaps the better way is to book through Hawaiian Air Cargo. They are experts in shipping all breeds of domestic cats and dogs interisland and to the mainland. Only three pets are allowed per flight, so Margaret (or one of her coworkers) will check what flights are available on your travel date. She looks for direct flights to minimize disruptions and the earliest times before the heat becomes a factor. Once a suitable flight is found,
50 ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2017
she will ask you to book yourself online or by phone, and call back with the sixletter confirmation code to coordinate reservations for you and your pet. Complete details on how to prep your pets for travel, location address for drop off/pick up and phone number will be provided during this time, so take notes! Prices vary depending on the route and kennel dimensions, and you must drop off your dog at the Hawaiian Air Cargo warehouse, which is located on the outskirts of the passenger terminal. Interisland pets must be checked in no later than 1½ hours prior to departure time, and for mainland flights check-in is three hours prior to departure time. Hawaiian Air Cargo will book accompanied pets up to a year in advance with a passenger holding a confirmed seat on the flight, and unaccompanied pets up to 30 days out. You will also need a Health Certificate from your vet for pets traveling from Honolulu to the mainland, no more
than 10 days in advance, and 14 days from mainland to the Hawaiian Islands. Neighbor island trips do not need one. Tip from Margaret: Don’t get it too early, because flights or plans may shift departure by a day or two. When shipping from the mainland, you will have to comply with all the rules and regulations of the State of Hawaii Animal Quarantine prior to importing any live animal entering the State of Hawaii. Advances in rabies testing in the last decade allow animals to avoid quarantine with the proper documentation. Talk to your vet and consult Animal Quarantine online at Hawaii.gov or call (808) 483-7151. There are also restrictions on when Hawaiian Air Cargo will ship to certain mainland cities due to temperature concerns. No animals are shipped to Sacramento, San Jose, Phoenix and Las Vegas from April 15-October 15 because of the high heat. And all animals shipped between October 16-April 14 must have an Acclimation Letter from their vet stating the coldest temperature a pet can withstand and for how long. Pets will not be shipped if any city along the routing has an actual or forecasted temperature of under the temperature stated by the vet on the “Letter of Acclimation” provided at the time of check-in. During loading, pets are not brought out to the aircraft until all cargo is loaded, and upon arrival pets are the first to be off the aircraft before cargo. This minimizes the time spent planeside, where they are still subject to outside temperatures. There are no breed restrictions, however, snub-nosed breeds do best when they travel in a next-size-up crate with four-side ventilation, which helps keep their body temperature down.
The Right Crate Your crate has to be airlineapproved. The largest crate that can be shipped to/from the mainland is the 700 series, which is 48x32x35, and on the smaller interisland planes it is the 500 series at 40x27x30. While sitting or standing, the dog’s ears must clear the interior ceiling of the crate, and he must be able to turn around comfortably without the body of the pet touching the interior side. The length must allow your pet to lie comfortably while in transit. There must be two bowls for water attached inside, but refillable from the outside without opening the door. Drip water bottles are acceptable and allow the agents to refill when needed. The bottom of the crate must have absorbent materials for spillage and accidents, such as blankets, sheets, towels or puppy pads. Tip from Margaret: include a T-shirt or towel with your scent on it, which provides your pet a comforting smell: yours. Hawaiian Air Cargo recommends not sedating your pet, as higher altitude can slow the heart rate down. If you do choose to sedate him, you must provide a letter from your vet stating what drug was given, when, and by whom. With due diligence, proper paperwork and a good crate, your air travel plans with your pet will be less stressful! Margaret Toilolo and her Hawaiian Air Cargo booking desk team can be reached Monday-Friday 7:00am to 5:00pm; Saturday and Sunday 7:00am to 1:00pm. Call 1-877-422-2746. Building a Better Dog Park City and citizen cooperation makes Moanalua Dog Park better than ever BY JOHN HARMON
I
t started with the dog, as all great stories do. It was Christmastime of 2015 when Tom Hinson made the trek down to the Hawaiian Humane Society and found Kiko. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed didn’t begin to describe his energy and enthusiasm, which is why Kiko had been returned a time or three. Having recently retired from his day job and now teaching guitar and playing gigs at night as one of Hawaii’s premier blues guitarists, Tom Tom Hinson and Kiko figured he had the time to spend helping the peripatetic pup to learn how to chill. His promise: a daily walk and training on weekends. Luckily, Tom lived near Moanalua Gardens, which boasts one of only five dog parks on Oahu. Moanalua Dog
Park was also the first to open with the cooperation of the city and the citizens who were lobbying for a safe place for their dogs to play off-leash. (Shout out to Pat Jones and Betty and Clatyon Kamida for their patience and diligence in shepherding the process through over three years of negotiations!) So Tom and Kiko became regulars, Tom enjoying the company of nice folks (hey—they’re dog lovers!) and Kiko slowly learning to socialize (less bark, more play!). But all was not totally swell. The park was a little unkempt. Oh, it wasn’t unsafe or falling into ruin. Indeed, the city did a nice job of keeping the grass watered and mowed, and regularly emptied the trash cans. But one notices things when one visits daily. First there was the mud. The steep slope around the back side of the park means that all of the rain washes down to the front, the low spot being right next to the entrance. A large puddle of nasty, red, muddy water often greeted visitors as they arrived. But as a regular, Tom noticed that it SUMMER 2017 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE 53

was much worse weekly when the city maintenance crew watered the area. Second, the metal trash cans were rusted out and the lids were bent so they no longer fit securely. So: flies. Lots of flies. And finally, the long abandoned Koi Pond sat with over three inches of standing water, sludge and leaves, breeding mosquitos and housing a colony of Bufos—toads toxic to dogs. Having noticed that these conditions didn’t improve over the next couple of months, Tom decided to find out why. He called the office of Carol Fukunaga, his City Council Rep, described the situation and asked for improvements. Shortly thereafter he received a letter with pictures of the problems and a list of proposed improvements. And a few weeks after that a meeting with the City’s Clinton Jamile and Mike Medeiros really got the ball rolling. Fifty bags of cedar bark mulch were used to fill the low area where the water collected, and sprinkler heads were re-aimed to shoot water away from the area. Shiny new plastic trash cans with nice wooden lids replaced the old metal ones. And Tom and a merry band of volunteers began to take responsibility for some of the other problems. They
scooped out the sludge from the Koi pond and cut a 3x3" ditch near the pvc drain, so now when it rained they just swept the water out. There were still muddy spots when it rained, mostly due to the grass not growing well under the huge trees. Then another park user suggested using tree-trimming mulch from the Division of Forestry. Two truckloads were delivered over two weeks for the merry band to spread and now the mudslide has subsided. So, mud has abated, flies have flown, bufos are bounced and mosquitos made scarce. Today the Moanalua Dog Park is a wonderful example of how the city and its citizens can work together. And Tom has officially signed papers to adopt the park solidifying his commitment to keeping the park clean. Say “Hi” next time you visit and thank him for a job well done! very cowboy’s best friend, besides his horse, this sturdy guy will work all day and ask for more. Bred in Australia in the 1800s, they earned their living then as now working as heelers, biting the heels of unruly cattle being corralled or driven to market. hepherd-like, fast, agile, shy and wary by nature, they are nonetheless loyal, true companions. No doubt due to being bred to 35-45 lbs. 17-20" tall work with humans. They’re energetic and must have daily exercise. Early introduction by the puppy to other dogs and people is necessary, but maintenance is minimal.
