Because your love is everlasting... Keep your best friend close forever with a real, sparkling memorial diamond. Aloha, A simply stupendous Summer Issue of Island Dog is in your hands, and we couldn’t be happier to bring it to you. It starts with the lovely Leia gracing our cover in the most gorgeous, Corgi-ous way. Gotta love ’em! The Da Kine Canine Photo Gallery is full of your fabulous furry friends, and Pups & Peeps includes many of you, basking in their reflected joy and love. Next up is Dogs in the Great Outdoors, so send us snaps of scenes at the beach, on the trail, and (gasp!) even in the backyard. We profile Beanie—Queen of Kia, and explore the ins and outs of doggie doors. Plus, good news from the dog park front: the City opened a new one at Aala Park. And for windward dwellers updates on 2 (TWO!) proposed DPs! More good news: all emergency shelters on Oahu are now pet friendly. Take a moment to put together a kit in one of those spare canvas shopping bags that includes all of the non-perishable items on the list (page 50). So when disaster strikes, no panic! John Stallings shares great info from Homekeepr.com in Carpet Cleaning 101, and Gifts & Sniffs is chock-full o’ choice goodies to share with you-know-who. All this, plus resident artists John Pritchett & Dan Van Zyle meditate on bone clouds and the likable Labradoodle, respectively. As ever, we thank you, dear readers, for the kindness of your attention in this most digital of ages, and for sharing with our advertisers your fondness for our little dog rag. May your Summer be Sublime.

Leia was born December 19, 2013. When I first laid eyes on her, she covered me with doggie kisses and fluffy exuberance. And the happy goofy noises that she made as she demanded attention sealed the deal. We named her Leia because my son’s dog's name is Stormtrooper. And she is a princess! We belong together and have rarely been apart since. She even gets to go to work with me every day. Lunchtime is her favorite—she barks at us demanding her fair share. Leia loves car rides and she absolutely loves to go to the beach. The feel of the sand between her doggy toes gets her going and she starts to run like crazy, her tongue flapping in the breeze as sheer joy takes over. Leia is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, a herding breed, so she can run fast and turn on a dime. When we go to the doggie park at Ala Wai or Hawaii Kai she just starts running right outta the gate like a thoroughbred at the horse race. The others can rarely keep up with her fast pace and tight turns. For such a little thing she’s awfully fast. Once a month Leia visits her favorite groomers at Petco in Kaneohe. Corgis have a double coat of fur, basically regular fur and an undercoat. The undercoat actually acts as insulation and helps to keep her cool or warm, whatever is needed. She just needs an occasional bath and lots and lots of brushing. Gotta keep that flouncy fluffy corgi butt all feathery and poofy! — Jana Leuschen 16  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2019

News Item: Engineers at Ford Europe prototype a better doghouse using noise-cancelling technology developed to make life in Ford vehicles quieter. Combined with a noise dampening layer of cork, when the mic hears loud sounds from the engine or transmission or fireworks, it immediately emits opposing sound waves from the audio system. Kelly Boy DeLima: This is so cool, Ford technology being used to make the world better for dogs! I hope they make this into a product available in Hawaii, so you can buy your doghouse at the same time you drive to the Windward side to Get Your Own Ford!

Aloha Kia's Bill van den Hurk has unleashed a diminutive dynamo in Hawaii.

Beane 4

Queen of Kia

It was love at first theft. We’ll let Bill explain... “A friend of mine raised Chihuahuas. So when I found out there were puppies, I decided to go and see them. This was in 2007. I found a litter of three: two brothers and her. Now I wanted a girl, not a boy because they pee on everything. Mom and Dad were both national champions, by the way. When I took her out of the pen, I put my camera case down to take a picture. And the little dickens grabbed 36  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2019

the case and ran away with it. That was it. I said, ‘You’re the one!’” Fast forward to June of last year. Life had been rough on Bill with the passing of Annie, Aloha Kia’s beloved first spokesdog. He mourned for a few months, but realized that his commercials needed the spark that only a cute canine can provide. Enter Beanie. “She is just absolutely a little Sweetie Pie! Loving, wants to be with you, loves kids,” says Bill. “But she’s not nuts about other dogs because she likes to be the room leader.”

Riding responsibly

Beanie and Bill

Love Sponge

Beanie’s a natural on TV. Her feisty attitude shines as she struts around the dealership on an inspection tour with Kia Man in tow. She even made signs in Aloha Kia’s 22nd anniversary commercial. Only needing two or three takes, she is one take-charge little Diva! Beanie and Bill live at Ko‘olina— their back fence is right on the course—and she lets all the golfers know she’s watching with some enthusiastic barking. Of course, when anyone is bold enough to approach and extend a hand, the barking

becomes enthusiastic licking. Beanie also advocates for pet safety in vehicles (see back cover). She always rides with a harness in her car seat. She can move around, but will be much safer in the event of a mishap. She’s always dismayed by seeing dogs loose in the back of trucks or sitting on driver’s laps, and hopes to make owners more aware of the dangers in these situations. So despite Annie’s huge paw prints she has to fill, little Beanie is fitting nicely into the role of lead dog.

The Ins and Outs of Doggie Doors

Your dog’s “Open Sesame” moment is just a flap away.

W

ould you like to be free from having to get up to let the dog out...and back in? A doggie door could be a good solution providing you have a suitable door or wall for installation.

The Right Pet Door The pet door marketplace offers many options with kits for door, walls, sliding glass doors, window screens, sliding screens and screen doors. You can start with a basic setup (and cheapest): a simple plastic frame with a flexible vinyl flap that seals shut with a magnet. Not exactly rugged. In addition to the flap, look for doors that include a lock mechanism or a separate rigid lock-out panel that slides into slots to completely block the door from the inside. Good during bad weather or when you’re away traveling. Spending a little more buys sturdier frame material such as aluminum and a double-flapped door. That extra flap provides better insulation and protection against unwelcome critters, inclement weather, and keeps in the occasional adventurous toddler. Or you can go high tech with a pet door activated by a

44  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2019

microchip in your pet’s collar. In a multi-pet household, collars can be selectively set to be on or off. For apartment dwellers, renters and those dead set against cutting, a sliding glass door insert abuts the glass door—no cutting involved. Keep in mind that it will narrow the overall doorway opening. The insert can be adapted to lock with the main door.

Measure Your Dog Manufacturers have suggested measurements for selecting the right size door. Typically an additional inch or two is added to each measurement. Refer to these measurements to select the right door size. 1. Measure your dog’s width at the widest point (either chest or hips). 2. Measure your dog’s height from the top of the shoulder to the bottom of the chest or belly (whichever is greater). 3. Measure your dog’s withers from the highest point of the shoulder blade to the floor. Think about the step over measurement which is the space between the bottom of the door and the ground. Three to five inches is reasonable. Taller dogs may need more while smaller or older dogs need a low step over. Before committing to the cut, it might be worth the extra effort to cut a template out of a cardboard box and have your dog step through it to check for proper size and clearance. The kits come with clear instructions so an adept DIYer can pull off an install over a weekend.

Sliding glass door insert.

Doggie door built into door.

Unleashed Freedom Once installed, introduce your dog to the door and help him get comfortable with the flap. Luring him in and out with his favorite treat or toy is helpful. Some dogs will catch on quickly and others may need time. Soon you’ll be relaxing with your favorite beverage while your dog will be enjoying the wonders of his very own selfservice door to the great outdoors.

DOG PARK NEWS

Aala Dog Park Oahu’s Newest Off-Leash Dog Park

The newest off-leash dog park is located at Aala Park and is open during park hours: 6am to 9 pm daily.

M

ayor Kirk Caldwell and city officials kicked off the opening of Oahu's newest off-leash dog park with a blessing ceremony March 12. The dog park occupies approximately 10,000 square feet near the narrow triangle area between North Beretania and North King street and across from American Saving Bank. The park was made possible through a public-private

46  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2019

partnership between the non-profit Aala Dog Park Association and the city. The Aala Dog Park Association paid for fencing and concrete pads costing over $40,000 through a GoFundMe campaign, a $25,000 Bark for Your Park PetSafe grant and $5,000 from American Savings Bank. ASB also agreed to match funds raised through the GoFundMe campaign.

City departments helped out with landscaping and permitting, as did local businesses such as City Mill. The park features separate areas for large and small dogs, each with a dedicated doublegated entry. A shade tree in each area makes for a very pleasant respite. The park is still working on the water spigot, so be sure to bring your own water for now.

L-R: Anthony with 18-week old Remi and Brox enjoy playtime and socialization. Jeff and Kekoa love the short walk from their condo. SUMMER 2019 • ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE  47

Windward Updates Kailua Dog Park The Hamakua eight-acre parcel, donated by Alexander & Baldwin to the state, is currently being assessed by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, which will be in charge of park construction. The state has allocated $3.8 million for the planning, design, and construction of the park, which will include a playground, public outdoor climbing facilities, and exercise space in addition to a dog park. The state will turn over the property to the City and County to operate the park once completed, and the City will work with community non-profits, such as the Windward Dog Park Hui and other groups who will help the city manage and maintain the property, said Rep. Chris Lee at the April Kailua Community Meeting.

Kaneohe Dog Park The Windward Dog Park Hui remains optimistic that a dog park will be built in Kaneohe in the near future. During a packed Town Meeting at Ben Parker School April 10, Councilman Ikaika Anderson reiterated his commitment to open a dog park next to Bayview Golf Course. The city parcel is currently under temporary control by the city Department of Environmental Services, which is using it to monitor the new Kaneohe/Kailua sewer tunnel project. Once this phase is completed, the land will revert to the city Department of Parks and Recreation. Councilman Anderson noted that because the site already has the necessary infrastructure, it should be a fairly quick process to get the park opened for public use.

Planning Ahead for Disaster Preparedness Your Pet’s Safety Hurricane season runs from June through the end of November. In the event of evacuation for a hurricane or other disaster, residents and pets should come prepared with a pet disaster preparedness kit — shelters do not stock supplies.

Monitor local media and official social media sites for specifics and updates. Based on the type of disaster and other circumstances, not all shelters will be open and facilities other than those listed may be used. Sign up for free alerts to your cell phone and or email account: https://hnl.info/alerts provided by the City and County of Honolulu. Your pet kit should include: • Pet crate or carrier (one for each pet). Pets should be able to sit, stand and turn around comfortably. • Food and Water. A 14 day supply in secure containers. A can opener if needed plus food and water bowls. • Medication/First Aid. Essential meds plus medical/veterinarian information including vaccine records. • Identification. For owners of terrestrial animals, cleaning the carpet is going to be a necessity sooner rather than later. And doing it right means not having to do it over and over again (hopefully). Because animals tend to do their business where they’ve done it in the past, getting that particular smell out of the rug is an important art to learn if you intend to share your life with a dog or a cat.

Right: Nature’s Miracle Urine Destroyer is a bio-enzymatic cleaner for stain removal and odor elimination.

First, About Carpets and Liquids There’s a lot of very bad advice online about how to clean up your pet’s urine spots. You know

52  ISLAND DOG MAGAZINE • SUMMER 2019

the ones. You walk through the bedroom at night and — bam — there it is. Some random bloggers would have you put down a paper towel and then basically try to absorb the liquid by stomping it out. Unfortunately, that’s about the worst thing you can do. Carpets are really absorbent, but much of that absorbency is down below, in the pad, which is covered up by the rug. So when you stomp on a liquid mess, what you’re really doing is spreading it further through the pad, creating an even wider puddle in a place where your flimsy paper towels can never go. Unless you’re prepared to rip up the carpets and deal with the puddle, consider purchasing a tool that can extract fluid from rugs, like a handheld extractor, a floor cleaner with an extract-only mode or, in a pinch, a wet/dry vac (this one is harder to get smelling fresh and clean again). Any of these tools is far more effective than a paper towel — or even a whole roll. When it comes to cleaning urine out of carpet, always follow the same procedure: Use an extractor to pull as much fluid as possible out of the carpet and pad. Remember that the small

Pet hair in carpets can require a lot of effort to keep cleaned up, but if you can’t choose between the pet or the carpet, give these tips a try: Wrap masking tape around an old paint roller attached to a broom handle. You’ve literally just built a giant lint roller, now go forth and roll all the hair off the surface of the carpet. You’ll still need to vacuum afterward, but you might not have to empty the bin as often. There’s a device called a carpet rake that is basically what you spot on top of the carpet may be hiding might imagine.
