How can we be heading into September already? I honestly do not know where this year has gone!
If you are a regular reader of this community publication you may remember that the last few years, the September issue front cover has always been dedicated to anything tractor themed. This is partly because I have always had a love of tractors and secondly September is harvesting season and we are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or to the frustration of many but to my delight stuck behind one in traffic.

I will be showing my age here, but I remember years ago when I was growing up, I looked forward to helping load the bales on to the trailer which in those times were just held on with a bit of rope and then sitting on the top bouncing about as we went along the road. Back then, health and safety wasn’t an issue and at times there could be a few of us on the top of the stack and if any of the bales did fall on the road, then we just stopped and picked them up. In those days everything was just a bit more laid back. There wouldn’t have been moaning, honking of horns or even road rage when this happened, just acceptance that your journey may be delayed by a few minutes. Imagine how this would be greeted on Coppins Bridge now!!

The Cinnamon Trust is national charity and a much-needed source here on the island. Their objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. They work in partnership with people over retirements age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness to offer all kinds of free pet care.
Many elderly or ill pet owners worry about their ability to provide appropriate care for their loved pets and rather than them having to rehome what could be their only companion, The Cinnamon Trust with the help of their amazing volunteers can step in and provide the help that is needed, such as walking the dog for a housebound owner, cleaning bird cages and litter trays and even foster pets while owners need hospital or hospice care.
The Cinnamon Trust are looking for volunteers to help island pet owners. They cover the whole island and therefore need volunteers from all areas. They currently have pet owners in Newport and Cowes who are in need of immediate help and support for their beloved dogs who love a good walk.
By volunteering you will be supporting the dogs by providing regular exercise to keep them in tip top condition and you will also be taking away a worry from the owner who will no doubt have enough on their plate already.

As I sit down to write this piece, we have just experienced the first rain for a very long time. It perhaps takes thoughts away from the risks and fears arising from the heat we have been experiencing to the serious problems people will be facing as Autumn and Winter approach.
We have all heard about the energy crisis but, particularly with the distraction of the recent ‘heatwave’, I get the impression many people have been talking about it as something to worry about on another day or something that is being overstated. I hope both of these views are correct, but I fear they are not. As such we will all need to do what we can to minimise our energy use and look out for others who will be struggling because of the inevitable financial impacts.
I think that for some the crisis will be a useful wake up call. Why do we always leave lights on? Why is the thermostat turned up to 24? The increasing costs we are going to see will perhaps be a good lesson in the fact that we need to be much more conscious to be clever in our use of energy. It’s not just about those people who are lucky enough to be able to buy an electric car. It’s something we should all think about every day and every time we turn on a switch or turn up a dial. Looking at the bigger picture it all relates to pursuing the aim of minimising carbon release into the atmosphere and the impacts that has. The extreme weather we have experienced recently, and indeed over the last year, has ably demonstrated that climate change is a reality. Better use of energy is not just about saving money, it is about saving our local environment and the planet. A lot of people are going to need help. Across the Island we have an amazing cohort of volunteers and in some areas, we have grown to rely on them - perhaps too much in some areas. There are also now serious concerns for the financial wellbeing of some of these groups. As people buckle down and face increasing costs at home we have to ask where the money for such groups is going to come from? I do hope that the generosity of the Island people can prevail, and the tenacity of our volunteers remains strong to help those who need assistance to get through the winter months. If you have the ability to give time or can still give financial support to any of the groups that support our local communities and those in need please do so. It is important.
I will do what I can as the local councillor for Brading and St Helens. I am also always available to deal with any Council related issues you may have. My contact details are above, and I also hold regular ‘Surgeries’.

Isle of Wight u3a has been going in its present form for just three years. In that time two sisters – Carol Bradshaw and Sally Forster – and a small committee have established a membership of nearly 200.
The aim of u3a is to provide opportunities to people no longer in full-time employment, at a time when they can enjoy learning for its own sake. There are over 400,000 UK members.
Carol, chair of u3a Wight, says it’s the members who generate the range of opportunities on offer – from playing mah-jong to visiting gardens, going on beach walks or improving Spanish.
Recent events have included a visit to Farringford, a talk on reflexology, meals at Island restaurants and walks with lunch. New groups in the pipeline include slow running and jazz appreciation.
u3a used to be shorthand for University of the Third Age. Nowadays, as it celebrates its 40th anniversary, the acronym is enough to be instantly recognisable. To mark the anniversary u3a Wight is holding a series of events in September to which non-members are invited.

Bembridge in Bloom - This year’s winners are Mrs P Harding (1st Prize), Mr P Myatt (2nd Prize). A special prize has also been awarded to the Community Gardeners for the Memorial Gardens. Tour of Britain Sunday 11th September
Parking and Access - Due to the Tour of Britain cycle race parking restrictions will be in place on the following roads starting from 6.00pm on Saturday 10 September, until the race passes through on the Sunday. The anticipated timing for the road closure on the Sunday is 11.04 am to 11.34 am with riders passing through approx. 11.22 - 11.24am.
Any vehicles left on the cycle route after 6pm on Saturday 10 September will be removed to a location not on the route.
If you cannot find your vehicle because it has been moved you will then need to ring the Isle of Wight Council on 823800 to establish the vehicle location so you can collect it after the Tour of Britain has passed and the road has reopened.

Thursday 1st September (and every first Thursday of every month thereafter) – Teen Epilepsy Café at Richmonds, Bath Road, Cowes from 6.30pm. It’s an opportunity for teenagers with epilepsy to meet those in the same boat, to chat and listen to music in a safe and supportive space.

Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September. Isle of Wight Classic Car Extravaganza at Ryde Esplanade from 11am – 5.30pm each day. This famous Isle of Wight Charity Classic Car event promises to be the biggest and best ever. Vehicles from all over the UK and mainland Europe will be attending this unique two-day show. There will be a spectacular collection of vintage, classic, custom and retro cars and other rare vehicles. Free event.
Saturday 3rd September – Vectis Radio Coffee Morning 10am to midday in the studio at the Riverside Centre. Meet some of the presenters and other listeners. Go along and have a chat. There will be tea and coffee and biscuits plus the promise of homemade cakes. All they ask for is a donation in the bucket to help them to keep going. Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September - Wolverton Manor Garden Fair in Shorwell, Newport, PO30 3JS. 10am – 5pm both days. Wolverton is the Island’s largest traditional garden fair and boasts lots to see and do across the weekend. Admission on the day is £8 per adult and children (under 14) £5
Sunday 4th September – Morris Minor Rally at IW Steam Railway, Havenstreet, Ryde from 10am. The ‘Moggy Minor’ is fondly remembered and is still a much-loved car. Come and see a whole host of Morris Travellers, saloons, convertibles, vans, pickups and custom classics on display.
Saturday 10th September – Vectis Radio’s Great Big Massive Enormous Variety Night at Strings Bar & Venue. A fun filled, entertaining family variety show to raise funds for Vectis Radio and the 4Ps Training School. Your MC for the night is award winning Drew Cameron, comedy impressionist, semi-finalist on Britain’s Got Talent. Tickets are £10 each - To get your tickets email tickets@vectisradio.fm. Sunday 11th September – Tour of Britain Finale - The eyes of the world will be upon the Island as more than 100 of the world’s top cyclists battle it out over a 130km course starting in Ryde which loops through most of our towns and villages before finishing at The Needles. There is a full timetable showing route details, parking information and estimated timings to help you plan your day - whether you want to enjoy the race as a spectator or avoid the rolling road closures which will be in place during the race. September was originally the seventh month of the ancient Roman calendar, and as such it was named Septem, which translates into “the seventh month”. It wasn’t until 451 BC that the months of January and February were added to the calendar, making September the ninth month.

September is graced with having two different birth flowers. The two flowers are the vibrant aster and the beautiful yet resilient morning glory. The significance of both flowers is actually very similar, with the aster being said to represent love, while the morning glory represents affection.

We have been fortunate to enjoy fine weather during the summer school holidays albeit the heatwave felt excessively hot, and it was a relief when more seasonal weather returned. Bembridge has been thriving and busy as usual and it is great for the village that the Tour of Britain cycling route comes through Bembridge on 11th September.
I have had some time over August to prepare a leaflet updating residents with what I have been up to in the last year. It has been printed by local Island printers and I will have delivered the leaflet to every household by mid-September.
During August I attended an informal Corporate Scrutiny Committee Meeting in Newport where we asked planning officers to prepare some revisions to the draft Island Plan which removes the greenfield allocations for the fields either side of Steyne Road, plus sites in Freshwater. This revised plan will be debated at the September meeting of the Corporate Scrutiny Committee, and I will be seeking to persuade Councillors to back it as an improvement on the draft plan we have currently. local ferry timetables to be agreed by the government like rail timetables, so that we see more regular services that run later in the evening. When Rishi Sunak MP visited the Island, I also asked him to commit to fairer funding for the Island. He grew up in Southampton and knows the Island well. He said he would do what he could to push through the levelling up agenda to ensure more money reaches the Island.
The local fire station also features my leaflet to residents. I have joined the campaign to get a fully staffed, fully operational fire appliance back in the station and I hope there will be some good news in that regard in the near future. I am pleased to be able to report that after my first 15 months serving as your local Isle of Wight Councillor, I have a 100% meeting attendance record at Council meetings. Only three of the 39 Councillors have a 100% record.
I was pleased to attend a local meeting to discuss local walking and cycling infrastructure. With some funding from the Isle of Wight Council, consultants have been instructed to develop a plan to recommend improvements to walking and cycling in Bembridge, St Helens and Brading. Part of the focus is on connectivity and linking up paths and routes.
In late July, I met with local government minister Paul Scully MP, to make the case for fairer funding for the Island. I am also supporting Bob Seely’s campaign to require Finally, the long-awaited flood report is still being promised for imminent publication. Crucially, I have been assured that funding will be available for future flood resilience specifically for Bembridge. The next phase will be spent ensuring that the money is forthcoming and allocated in the best possible way that sees the greatest benefits with engagement from Island Roads, the Isle of Wight Council, the Parish Council, the Environment Agency, Southern Water and where relevant, local land owners.
