The Magic of Tidying Up

By Jacqueline Ward, Island Property News

Over the years as we transition from our parents home to our dorm rooms to our own apartments and homes the one thing we learn, and that’s every home needs to be cleaned. But that’s not something easily done. Sometimes it can be overwhelming with all the clutter we accumulate but there is a way. For years, I have been hearing about the craze that the book “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo has started since it hit book stores a few years ago. I can totally understand the hype around it. In a world that’s become more and more materialistic, where we want the bigger better thing, gadget, outfit, whatever, it’s no surprise our houses are more cluttered than ever. I was no different. Chaos was ensuing in our home and it felt like it was never ending. No matter how much I cleaned.

So I decided to try out the book and see if it “sparked joy” in me.

Once I started reading, I got totally sucked in. It turns out; tidying really may be the way to bliss. Not just in making your home more efficient but your life as well. Here’s what I learned.

1. “ Putting things away creates the illusion that the clutter problem has been solved.” *

I’m a pretty organized person and have various storage containers to put things away. But over time they get full and my house still generally feels cluttered. I thought that I had been tidying, in fact I had merely been wasting my time shoving stuff out of sight, concealing the things I didn’t need in a box. It’s a horrible cycle of hiding stuff. Most of the time we end up putting something away and forgetting we have it at all, then get another one. That’s why Kondo says tidying must start with discarding. We need to resist putting things away until we identify what we really want and need. Then we need to store the stuff we do decide to keep with respect, in the best way to see and appreciate them.

2. “Tidying is a special event. Don’t do it every day.” * Yes Kondo! Thank You! The daily task of trying to keep up with the clutter can feel like an endless chore. Only doing a little at a time is only going to drive you slowly crazy. Kondo’s method has you tidying in one fell swoop rather than tidying up a little and then rebounding back. A complete decluttering session, rather than sorting things halfway, is needed to change your mindset. It seems overwhelming to do it all at once but she claims; once this is done tidying will be reduced to very simple task of putting things back where they belong. “I never tidy my room. Why? Because it is already tidy. The only tidying I do is once or sometimes twice a year, and for a total of about one hour each time. The many days I spent tidying without 6 Island Property News • Home Efficiency 2018 • www.ipn.bm

seeing permanent results now seem hard to believe. In contrast, I feel happy and content. I have time to experience bliss in my quiet space… Although not large, the space I live in is graced only with those things that speak to my heart *”, explains Kondo.

3. “Tidying up by location is a fatal mistake.” *

Like most of you, I’ve always cleaned one room at a time. Makes sense right?! According to Kondo, instead of going from room to room clean by category rather than location. For instance, start with all your clothes, then books, then knickknacks etc.. Her rationale is the root of most peoples clutter lies in the fact that we often store the same type of item in more than one place. When we tidy each room separately we fail to see that we’re repeating the same work in many locations. Additionally we fail to see how much stuff we actually own.

4. “We should be choosing what we want to keep, not what we want to get rid of.” *

A large portion of the book is about discarding the things that don’t serve you anymore. It can be intimidating. I was unsure about getting rid of my things “just because”. It’s easy to get rid

of things when there is an obvious reason for doing so. It’s much more difficult when there is no compelling reason. But it’s not about becoming minimalistic. Kondo explains, just because you get rid of stuff doesn’t mean you’re home will feel less cluttered. It’s about what’s in your home that matters not what you’re getting rid of. It’s about cherishing the things you want to keep in your home and surrounding yourself with things that in her words “spark joy”. “After all, what is the point in tidying? If it’s not so that our space and the things in it can bring us happiness, then I think there is no point at all *”, says Kondo. After reading the book, it’s easy to see why it has become so popular. This book transforms the way you see your possessions. Although it offers practical advice for cleaning out your home and storing your stuff properly, the book is more about a philosophy of owning things. I definitely see a whole new way of tidying and find my home and myself more efficient as a result. Helping Your Home Stay on Point: Tips & tricks that you can implement today to make your home more efficient!

1. Install low-flow showerheads

These have a flow rate of less than half the amount of conventional showerheads, vastly improving your home’s water efficiency. Them same can be done with your toilets replacing them with low-flow or dual-flush models.

2. Set up a shared online calendar between you and your partner

make much impact, but collectively energy vampires can be responsible for 10% of your energy bill.

6. Do a full Spring cleaning twice a year

This will enable you to get rid of junk that may have collected over the months. Consider using the keep, toss, donate method. Create piles of things you want to keep, get rid of or donate and purge away.

7. Give your devices a holiday

This will help you both organize your household from cleaning reminders to appointments or events to where the children are or need to be.

Before you leave on vacation, unplug as many appliances and devices as you can. You’ll save energy – and money – for your next getaway.

3. Open or Close your blinds

8. Organize your house by task

To help keep your home cool in the summer draw your blinds, shades or drapes. The reverse is the same for winter, open them during cooler months to let the sun warm your home.

4. Clean one room or area a day

This is less daunting than cleaning the whole house, and gives you a clear goal, instead of the “one-more-thing” syndrome that strikes when you get a mind to “do some cleaning”.

5. Unplug Unused Chargers

Cell phone and battery chargers that are plugged in but not in use are often referred to as energy vampires. Alone, one charger won’t

Put things most relevant to each job are where you’re most likely to use them. This might be obvious for things like laundry and crafts, but what about a mail station, homework area, or just storing linens in the laundry room?

9. Cooking with your Oven

Don’t open the oven door while baking. Each time, the temperature can drop up to 13.8°C (25°F) and requires additional energy to bring it back up. Turn off the oven 10-15 minutes before cooking time runs out. Your food will continue to cooking without using the extra electricity.

The CFO of Home Operations

Expert Advice from Freisenbruch-Meyer

In every family, one of the most important discussions is to appoint someone to take charge of the family finances. Being the CFO of Home Operations can be tricky, can definitely be demanding and can seem at times almost impossible. Some people suggest you should run a family’s financial affairs in the same way you run a business. The family CFO needs to create a plan and set goals, track monthly cash flow, review outgoings periodically to avoid overspending, and work with professionals hired to assist the family, such as lawyers and accountants.

Create a Mission Statement

Each family needs to understand what the family finances are all about, so the first thing every family needs is a MISSION STATEMENT. Yes, it may seem a little odd, but it is important to write down the financial goals of the family so a plan of action can be created.

Understanding your expenses

The most important job of the family CFO is to acquire a thorough understanding of the family expenses. Look at where the money is going and review your statements: you must determine what the family money is being spent on and forecast future expenses.

At AIRCARE, excellence is everyday.

Hold quarterly board meetings

The CFO must meet with the Vice President of Family Affairs (the spouse) and all employees (children) on a regular basis. The purpose of the meetings is to conduct a formal review of expenses, bank balances and investment performance and make sure everything is going according to plan. Each family meeting should have an agenda that reviews the family mission statement and budget.

Annual bonuses

With most organizations, if the company has had a good year then it rewards its employees to thank them for all their hard work. The same principle should be applied to the family – bonuses and rewards should be based on not just the ideas and but also the implementation that has actually lowered expenses and saved money, helping the family reach its goal. The reality is that successful businesses create business and action plans. At the end of the day, as a family we should all work together as a team and each be responsible for working towards the family’s financial goals. Carla Seely is the Vice President of Pension and Investments at Freisenbruch-Meyer. If you would like any further details, please contact her at cseely@fmgroup.bm or call +1 441 297 8686.

Beat the Heat and save money on your electricity - here’s how Expert Advice from BELCO There is plenty to love about Bermuda’s climate, but there is one aspect that leaves residents yearning for cooler temperatures: the infamous summer electricity bill. In THE summer months, we see a rise in the use of air conditioners, fans and pools as residents try to fend off the heat. Of course, each of these contributes to an increase in energy consumption. How can you use energy efficiently to both stay cool and keep your electricity bill low this summer? BELCO’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Manager, Jamil Rahemtula, offers a few suggestions:

1

Use Energy Star qualified fans to cool your home. An Energy Star qualified ceiling fan is 50% more energy efficient than a non-qualified model and works well to keep rooms cool while turning down your AC.

2

I t’s not the heat; it’s the humidity. When seeking to make your home less muggy, remember that Energy Star qualified dehumidifiers use up to 20% less energy than non-qualified models.

3

If you choose to heat your pool, dial it back a notch. Setting your pool’s thermostat down by 5°F can reduce your pool’s heating consumption by 20%.

4 5 6 7

Don’t let your cool air vanish through the cracks. Use weather-stripping to minimize air leaks and reduce your home’s cooling needs by up to 20%.

Hang your clothes out to dry. Use that beautiful Bermuda summer sunshine to dry your clothes on an outdoor clothesline instead of using an electric dryer.

Get grilling. You don’t really want to turn that oven on, do you? Save the electricity and keep your indoor temperatures cooler by cooking your food on an outdoor grill. Barbecue, anyone?

U nplug and unwind. Unplug appliances when they are not in use. Start with your water heater, as it is one of the largest consumers of energy in your home. A timer is extremely convenient but simply pulling the plug each day after your shower also works.

For more information about energy efficiency and how it can help you save money on your electricity bill, visit www.belco.bm or follow BELCO on Facebook.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY TIPS

USE CEILING FANS Use ceiling fans to cool off for less. Run blades counter-clockwise in the summer to push cool air down.

I Can See Clearly Now... Expert Advice from BS&R Group Context often forces us humans to develop an appreciation for something. If you are reading this on your home computer or mobile device, you are looking through a glass screen near a window so congratulations! Mankind has only used windows for approximately 1% of our known existence, and transparent glass has only been around for 0.02% of the homo sapien’s estimated 200,000 years on this planet. It might seem just like a pretty part of the property that lets light in but it is actually a feature with a long and fascinating history and one that can do a lot for your home. Windows, how we know them, started showing up in homes in 100AD. But it was many years until they became something similar to what we use today. And over these years windows have become more efficient and beneficial for a home. There are many added bonuses windows & shutters offer your home. From ventilation to better warmth and light you can increase your home’s efficiency ten-fold depending on your materials. For example, by keeping our windows open and not turning on our lights it also helps you save in electricity as well as help the environment. A window’s energy efficiency is dependent upon all of its components. Advances in lumber and glass technology have offered us improved ways of reducing the heat and UV light that enters our spaces. Using treated lumber, like Accoya, lowers heat retention, offers better efficiency, and provides added benefits

like retained strength and durability. Low-emission (or Low-E) glass helps to protect your interior furnishings by reducing the ultra-violet light that can cause fading. It’s important to also consider is how the windows operate. Some operating types have lower air leakage rates than others, which will improve your home’s energy efficiency. If your budget is tight, energy efficiency improvements to existing windows can also help. Especially when it comes to older homes it’s important to think about how you can update your windows without hindering your home’s aesthetics. We’ve fabricated countless windows that not only look good but are also functional, efficient and add many benefits to your home. Next time you’re gazing out your window, maybe you can appreciate the view a bit more and consider us when you need to replace it.

n Bermuda, we all share the same method of water collection and storage. Unfortunately, we know that without proper disinfection and water filtration, our most important resource is vulnerable and prone to microbial activity, bacteria growth and more. Bluewater’s patented technology not only removes contaminants such as toxic metals like lead, chemicals, pharmaceutical residues, microorganisms and other harmful substances and particles down to 0.0001 microns, but also dramatically slashes the reject water stemming from the filtration processes. ClearWater Systems Ltd has over two decades of proven technologies, knowledge and experience in Bermuda. We specialize in products that can be installed Point of Use (POU) like your kitchen sink or in your pump room at Point of Entry (POE) to provide safe, fresh potable water at your sink and throughout your home.
