Home Efficiency Air Conditioning Tips to Save you $$
Summertime, and the living is easy. The living is also HOT, sweaty and can get a little uncomfortable in the land of sun and fun; so retreating to a gloriously cool air conditioned home after being in the oppressive heat of the day is sometimes just what the doctor ordered. Thank goodness for a comfortable air conditioned oasis.
Fahrenheit is where you should set the thermostat. Be aware, that for every single degree of cooling you can do without, you’re saving on your energy bill. So avoid setting it too cold in summertime. Even setting your air conditioning unit one degree warmer than you normally would can cut costs by up to 10%.
Of course, the downside is that your air conditioning unit at home will be asked to work overtime in this peak season. The inevitable result is that your air conditioning bill could climb without you realising. Energy consumption can soar just like the temperature at midday. However, there are some very simple and effective tips to reduce your air conditioning bill and still keep a comfortable indoor environment. Applying these tips will help you keep cool when the bill come rolling in.
To really help reduce your energy bill, consider a thermostat with a built-in timer, so you’re not only setting the temperature, but setting the hours of operation for maximum energy efficiency. It makes sense to have a system that does it for you automatically, so you can set, and forget. And save of course.
1. Thermostats and timers - set and save
When it comes to energy consumption and reducing your air conditioning bill over summer, every degree matters! One of the most energy-efficient things you can do is set your thermostat at a comfortable temperature that won’t make your unit work too hard, but will still make you feel like you’re sitting pretty. As a guide, somewhere between 70 and 73 degrees 6 Island Property News • Home Efficiency 2020 • www.ipn.bm
2. Turn off at night, and save while you sleep
This money-saving tip is as clear as night and day! Keep your air conditioning on during the day, and off at night. The reasoning is simple. The evening air is naturally cooler, so you can take advantage of that by turning off the air conditioning and opening a window. You may even get a gentle breeze to cool things down. If you do find a welcome breeze, open windows or doors on both sides of your house to allow it to flow through. If you must keep your air conditioning on – set it a bit higher. With the air temperature lower at night, you can get away with your air
conditioner not running at the same low temperature as it does during the day. So, with your air conditioner not at max capacity, you can enjoy some nocturnal energy savings and sweet dreams.
3. Get shady and shut out the sun
Shade, shade, shade. However you can get it, grab it, and it will help your home stay cooler. Therefore, your air conditioning unit won’t have to work so hard, and your energy bill will be reduced. It’s simple. During a hot Bermuda summer, you can’t turn down the sun, but you can add some shade to turn down the heat.
The first way to get shady is to keep blinds, curtains, drapes and awnings drawn and closed. Whether it’s Venetian blinds, roller blinds, plantation shutters or lined curtains, keep that beautiful sunshine outside where it belongs. For sun-facing windows, lightcoloured backings for blinds and curtains will help deflect sun heat too. By closing windows, blinds, shutters or drapes, you’ll be keeping the hot air and the sun’s rays out, so your air conditioning doesn’t have to run all the time to maintain the optimal temperature. Heat absorption can be drastically reduced if your windows have a strong line of defense. Even tinted windows can stop some of the sun’s heat coming into your air conditioned sanctuary, and your unit won’t have to work so hard. Want some more ways to throw shade and reduce air conditioning bills? Consider Mother Nature’s original shade maker – trees. Plant trees, vines or shrubs that can add a defensive line of shade to the house.
4. Turn off those heat-emitting culprits
The television, the computer, the printer, the lamp in the corner, the kitchen oven… all of these household essentials generate bucketloads of heat and will be forcing your air conditioner to work harder to keep the temperature under control. Turn them off and you’ll save money on your air conditioning energy consumption straight away! What can you turn off? Can you turn off lights in unused areas of your home? Can you turn off the television or any other appliances when not in use? Those tablets, computers and printers emit a lot of heat that can make your air conditioner work harder. Who knows, it might even help bring back the art of conversation (or perhaps cause a family mutiny!). Why not try cooking the dinner on the BBQ outside, or enjoy a lovely salad that requires no cooking at all? Your indoor stove can really heat up your living space and add to your air conditioning bill. Who doesn’t love a steak or vegetable’s cooked on the BBQ in Summertime? And if it keeps your house cooler, all the better.
5. Keeping it clean to keep costs down
Here’s one more awesome tip to reduce your air conditioning bill over summer. Ensure your air conditioning unit is regularly maintained and that the filter is either replaced or cleaned to maintain optimum efficiency. A dirty filter makes any air conditioning unit work harder, meaning more electricity and higher energy costs! Here’s to a long hot summer, and keeping cool when the bills come in.
OUR TOP 5 HOME EFFICIENCY LIFE HACKS! 1. Use Power Strips
Power strips (aka surge protectors) are ideal when it comes to powering off excessive devices and plugs. Some energy hogs (Like PC desktops) never really “turn off” when you turn off their switch. Plug them into a power strip, then just flip that strip off, and all those hungry devices will stop eating energy simultaneously.
2. Unplug Unused Chargers
Cell phone and battery chargers that are plugged in but not in use are often referred to as energy vampires. Alone, one charger won’t make much impact, but collectively energy vampires can be responsible for 10% of your energy bill.
3. Go Old School – with a Clothesline
In the days of old, when smart watches were scifi, you saw clotheslines everywhere. The logic is simple: reducing electricity usage! The less electricity you rely on, the more of an efficient, cost-saving person you’ll become!
4. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs
Light bulbs are among the most energy hungry things people use. They don’t use a lot of electricity on their own but when you have half a dozen lights on things start adding up. Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs use up to 75% less energy. That means every four days a CFL bulb is on it uses as much energy as a regular light bulb does for one.
5. Upgrade your water heater
If you have an older water heater, you may be using more power than you think. The power it takes to heat the water heater adds up and it’s something you use every day. Energy efficient water heaters can save you money in the long run by being more efficient in producing hot water.

ENERGY Efficiency
The the new normal for Air Conditioning Expert Advice from Stuart Randles of CoolRoof Ltd.
As we march on past COVID 19 through the remainder of 2020, the upcoming years will be dominated once again by the onset of climate change. The planet is warming up, it only makes economic sense for homeowners to seek out the best ways to manage their home efficiency. Gone are the bulky central air conditioner systems and retro fit “window air-conditioning” units, which both are now seen as inefficient and costly to run. Ductless air conditioners are now the new normal for most homes. These are rated by energy efficiency, SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) to indicate how energy efficient the air conditioner is during the cooling or heating season, at varying temperatures. It’s important when purchasing a new air conditioner to always ask the SEER rating. Ductless air conditioners in Bermuda have become so popular that you can see at least one on the side of a home or building wherever you drive around the island. The look of these cumbersome units can really detract from the classic Bermudian architecture and local charm of a building or house. Have you even noticed how hot these outdoor machines can get in the Bermuda Sun? We equate this to a process referred to as ‘solar gain’ and you don’t
So how do we make our houses look great AND avoid our outdoor units heating up? The answer is simple! Using the classic Bermuda Roof as inspiration, the CoolRoof was designed, to help these outdoor machines maintain their efficiencies by means of reflecting ‘solar gain’. The CoolRoof helps to greatly reduce the heat on the outdoor equipment, while also acting as both a covering from weather for the equipment’s electronic parts. A team of local Bermudians designed and manufactured the CoolRoof in Bermuda. It has been installed since August 2019 in several locations, which we can proudly say that due to its durable fiberglass shell, all survived the last hurricane with no damage. CoolRoof can fit many of the major distributors of Air Conditioners including Gree and Mitsubishi. Contact Stuart at CoolRoof for an assessment and quote and protect your Air Conditioning investment.

have to look far in Bermuda to understand this concept. It’s shown in the way that for over 100 years we’ve been painting our roofs white and effectively reflecting approximately 66% of this ‘solar gain’! On our outdoor units this heat can lead to major inefficiencies!

Lunch 7PACKEDHacks
Expert Advice from Keelin Hankin BSc RD, Registered Dietitians at Island Nutrition
Lunchtimes can be tricky from tempting meals at local restaurants or grills to readily available office treats. Packing a lunch is great way to save money as well as helping to maintain a healthy balanced diet.
1. PREPARE
Prep and chop some fruit and/or veggies at the beginning of the week or at the weekend so they are easy to grab and have in a salad or as a snack. If making a fruit salad or fruit slices then squeeze over some lemon juice to prevent them from discoloring.
2. INVOLVE THE KIDS
If you are packing lunches for your kids, involve them as much as possible in the process. Ask them to clean out their lunch boxes and pack their choices for the next day: a fruit, something from the veggie drawer, cheese and a yogurt are all great additions. Kids are more likely to eat the items they choose to put in their lunch and this will also save you time! You can then add a sandwich, wrap or other main item when they are done.
3. LEFTOVERS
Improving Access to High Quality Nutritional Care Registered Dietitians providing Medical Nutrition Therapy Prevent and Manage Disease Paediatrics: including poor growth, behavioural issues, overweight, constipation, allergies, tube feeding and weaning Adults: including GI, cardiovascular, kidney disease, inflamation, obesity, cancer, wound healing, pregnancy and the elderly

Using dinner leftovers are a great idea to save time and reduce waste. Pack a portion before serving the dinner so you don’t have to worry about this when rushing to work in the morning or taking the kids to school and you won’t be tempted to finish the leftovers as seconds! Use leftovers creatively for example, if having fajitas for dinner then you could pack this for lunch the next day as a salad or burrito bowl with chicken, beans, veggies, avocado and salsa.
4. ORGANISE
Have a back up staple ready to go. This could be some cooked chicken, salad or hard-boiled eggs. In the winter, soup is a great option for the freezer if we haven’t had time to get to the supermarket.
5. LUNCH BOX
Use a reusable lunch box that keeps things fresh and chilled.
6. Buddy up
Trying to resist going out for lunch? Find a friend or coworker to eat lunch with at the park or in the staff room. You could even alternate who brings the lunch.
7. PICK A FEW DAYS
If taking a packed lunch to work every day is too difficult then choose a few days per week when you will bring lunch to work. If you feel you would benefit from support from a Registered Dietitian please contact us at Island Nutrition on 295-4082 or at info@islandnutrition.bm.
