Create a Happy Haven in your Home By Jacqueline Ward, Island Property News If you’re a parent you know, you’ll bend over backward to do everything possible to keep your family safe. We all want to create an environment where our family can grow and thrive. The average home can have a number of safety hazards but most can be addressed pretty easily. There are many ways to feel more empowered in your own home – here are just a few for you:
Extension Cords:
While an extension cord itself isn’t dangerous. The way they are commonly used is. Many people don’t realize there is a voltage capacity, and plug in as much as they can—creating a huge fire hazard. This, coupled with using warn out cords and running them under furniture and carpets, is why extension cords can be a huge risk for a fire in your home.
Get to know your neighbors:
A great way to feel safe in your home and neighborhood is to get to know your neighbors. Not only will you make some new friends you can invite over for dinner or go to a movie with, but you’ll know there’s someone looking out for you. Friendly neighbors will keep an eye on your home and help alert you to any potential problems.
Take a self-defense class: The more knowledge you have, the better you’ll feel about being home alone. Take a self-defense class to learn the basics of protecting yourself. Keep-up Home Maintenance:
Many of us don’t think about carbon monoxide. But it is a growing problem in homes. Prevent leaks by having your HVAC system, water heater, and other appliances that use gas, serviced by a professional every year. When buying a home, have these systems inspected before purchase.
Store Medications Properly:
Prescription misuse is a growing problem in homes, especially in teens and surprisingly seniors. Sharing prescriptions or using expired medication is a growing trend among seniors and a dangerous one. Both over-the-counter and prescription medications need to be kept away from children and teens. Dispose of all unused medications and never leave them out on a counter.
Turn on exterior lights and close the blinds:
Another great technique to feeling safe in your home is to deter criminals from entering. When it gets dark turn on the exterior lights and close the blinds in the house. Lights and sounds deter criminals, so outside lights will keep an intruder away.
Burns:
All sorts of things in your home can cause burns. It’s more than just while cooking or from candles. Dishwashers or other appliances both pose risk, especially to small children. When convenient, it’s advised that you latch the dishwasher or dryer and use back burners when cooking.

We love the saying, “If you wouldn’t do it face to face - don’t do it online” and it’s a great lesson for kids and adults alike while online. For example, would you go up to a complete stranger and start a conversation? Would you be abusive to friends or strangers in a pub or bar? Just because you feel protected by the apparent distance a screen gives between you and the person you’re talking to, you must remember that online is still the real world.
What kids don’t think about are viruses, online privacy, phishing, social networking etiquette, and any other internet safety and/or security issue you can think of. But not to worry there are many things you can do to give you more peace of mind while online:
YouTube Safety Mode: Not a lot of people realize it, but YouTube has a safety feature that will block most inappropriate or sexual content from search responses, related videos, play lists, shows, and films. For kids under four, there’s YouTube Kids that is an app featuring learning videos as well as Vine Kids. Both are curated video apps for tots.
Beware of Public Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi is a fantastic way to stay connected but it also poses some significant security risks. Only transmit data that you wouldn’t mind being stolen and never enter login details or banking info. If you do need to use public Wi-Fi to send important information, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to create a more secure connection.
Parental Control: Programs like Net Nanny give a pretty substantial parental control across Android, iOS, Mac and Windows devices. As well, Google
Stop Cyber Bulling:
Turn social networks to ‘private’: Unfortunately, Vine, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter do not have filters or safe search ability. Your best protection is to require your child to keep private accounts on each platform and then invest in a more powerful software that can monitor social networks.
Keep some passwords to yourself:
Don’t leave the app store logged in, complete with your iStore credit or credit card accessible. Mobile games make it really easy (and very tempting) to upgrade to a new level, or to unlock features by buying credits or gold. Kids need to learn that these things cost money and aren’t readily available to them.
Update Often:
Software security is an ongoing battle. As vulnerabilities arise and security flaws are exploited, developers deploy patches to update their software and provide users with better protection. Delaying these updates leaves your device more susceptible to an attack.

When you love something, you should protect and care for it. Homes with wood features and furniture are no different, so here are some tips to maintain your valued possessions.
1. Clean it! This seems like an obvious way to take care of your wood but one that can get overlooked when you’re busy. Go for a full clean of your wood pieces at least once a month with some weekly dusting to keep them looking great. Dusting may not seem like a top priority but airborne particles can build a filmy layer on wood that scratches the surface.
2. Weather Proof & Finish Properly Another fantastic way to protect your wooden pieces and show them some love is to finish them properly. This is especially vital for outdoor items to protect them from the weather. A good finish will protect your wood while also bringing out its inherent beauty.
3. Watch the Sun Speaking of the sun this is one factor that can have a huge effect on a wooden piece. Sun damage can happen indoors and outside. Watch where you place your pieces or make sure to rotate them if they are next to windows with a lot of sunlight. Valuable pieces might fade, and the light and heat can damage the wood.
4. Treat it Right! Your mom might have sounded like a nag on using a coaster but she’s right! Rings and heat damage can scar your wood. Always use a coaster when setting glasses or mugs on a wooden piece. Never place hot food directly on wood without the protection of a trivet or potholder. Already have the rings? 5. Take Care of Wear and Tear It is inevitable that there is going to be wear & tear over time. Some touch-ups may be easy to do yourself however if you are unsure we recommend getting an expert opinion. Some pieces may need more extensive work i.e. stripping & refinishing, but the key is to maintain your assets before having to spend more to completely restore or replace them.
