What makes a Safe Haven? By Jacqueline Ward, Island Property News

Always Be Prepared This month we are taking our motto from the Boy Scouts and ensuring when it comes to the security and safety in our homes we are always prepared. Here are a few tips to get you ready and make sure you’re doing everything you can to keep your family safe: Having a home that is safe and sound means more than just security in our books. It means creating a home that is a safe haven for the people in it. A place of refuge, where it’s habitants feel protected, sheltered, and loved. In our eyes home security is having a house that people actually want to come home to. So what makes a happy home? What makes it a safe haven? A home has many different inhabitants in it so ensuring that there is a space for everyone is important. From toddlers and teens to that infamous “man cave”, everyone in the family wants to have a place they can relax in, that is their own. If individual spaces are important so equally are having gathering spaces or entertainment areas. A home where you can’t come together is an unhappy one. Gathering spaces not only bring a family together but allow you to bring your friends and loved ones closer. Both spaces are important to make its inhabitants feel like they have somewhere they feel comfortable and accepted in. That’s a true safe haven. A happy home also works with you, not against you. That means finding a home that has a bathroom and kitchen that makes sense for your family. The most arguments start here so take the time to make these spaces work. Do they have enough room? Are they functional? Are you able to have fun and relax there? Make sure to tick all these off and give yourself a house that is a refuge not a hassle. The final stage to making a safe haven for your home’s inhabitants is to choose a style and design that reflects your family. Are you active people? Do you like traditional or contemporary? Is it just you or your partner or do you have a large brood? All these matter. If you’re not comfortable in your home you are definitely not going to be happy or feel very secure there. Don’t choose a home that limits you or a style or design that you can’t change. A family evolves over time and having a house that doesn’t allow you to do that isn’t one that is functional for you. You are constantly going to feel stressed and unhappy about your living situation. Choose a style or design that grows with you and you’ll have a safe haven for years to come. Safe and sound is what you make of it. Home security is important but it’s not the only thing that makes a home secure. Feel the love in your home and create a safe haven for you and everyone that lives there.

1. Falls – This is one of the most common household hazards. 1 in

5 older adults have an injury due to a fall. There are a number of ways to minimize falls and it starts with corralling hazards. Clear steps, secure rugs, handrails, and gates and install supports if necessary.

2. Drowning – Drowning isn’t only a risk outdoors during summer— it can also present a hazard in the home. Deaths from drowning in a bathtub have increased by 70% in the past decade, so do your part to prevent this from occurring. Make sure to have non-slip mats and hand rails where necessary and never leave children unattended in the tub. 3. Have an Escape Route – Plan out what to do and where to

go if there is an emergency. Go through your plan be it for a fire or burglary, and make sure all of your family know what to do and which routes to take before they happen.

4. Fires – There are thousands of fires every year due to accidents in the home, ranging from smoke damage to total devastation. Make sure to monitor candles, check appliance cords and potentially unplug any old appliances, install fire alarms and purchase a fire extinguisher. 5. Choking – Choking is said to be the fourth largest cause of accidental death in North America. There are many ways to minimize this risk, the first and foremost is to know your CPR. Keep dangers out of reach and monitor your children’s toys and playtimes. Also make sure to keep cords out of the way of little ones to prevent strangling hazards. 6. Practice Makes Perfect –

Go through your emergency plans with your family or those that live with you. Make them rehearse what to do in an emergency situation, and give them roles or responsibilities if necessary. Practice, practice, practice to ensure they are ready.

Staying Safe in a social world Being a parent in today’s socially linked-in world is likely one of the toughest challenges you will face. While it seems a constant challenge to keep up with ever evolving trends and apps that our kids demand, there are a number of ways that you can be prepared and help guide children to safe online activities. The #1 filtering tool recommended to parents these days is to become actively involved and have honest conversations with your kids around safety and integrity in their online worlds. This doesn’t mean you leave the doors unlocked. There are a number of filters you can turn on immediately that will help block some of the seedier content on your family computers and smart phones. These will definitely boost your peace of mind when it comes to online family safety.

Safe...and sound in your home

YouTube Safety Mode: Not a lot of people realize it but YouTube has a safety feature that will block most inappropriate or sexual content from search, related videos, play lists, shows, and films. For kids under four, there’s YouTube Kids that is an app featuring learning videos as well as Vine Kids. Both are curated video apps for tots.

Google SafeSearch: While it’s not going to be as strict as filtering software, Google has a SafeSearch feature that will filter explicit content (links, videos, and images). Google also has a reporting system if anything gets through their feature.

Turn social networks to ‘private’: Unfortunately, Vine, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter do not have filters or safe search ability. Your best protection is to require your child to keep private accounts on each platform and then invest in a more powerful software that can monitor social networks.

App flagging, restrictions, reviews, controls:

Call us at 295-4771 for all your home protection needs.

By reading app flags, age restrictions (ranks include: everyone, low maturity, medium maturity, or high maturity) and customer reviews on an app in both the Google Play store and iTunes, you will be able to discern if the app is going to be suitable for your child. Another great way to restrict inappropriate app access is not to share your store password with your kids. Both the Google Play Store app and the iPhone App Store have Parental Guides that are clear on how to control app downloads. It’s worth your time to check it out since apps are the #1 way teens are accessing mature content.

Restriction settings on smart phones: Both Android and iPhones have Restriction settings that will control far more than you can imagine on your child’s phone. In addition to these quick clicks, Advise your kids never to share passwords, teach your children to log out of computers when they finish their work, even at home. This will prevent a friend or sibling from posting or emailing using their account--even as a joke.

Let them run loose! Tile and stone that’s safe for your home

Expert Advice from Surface Trends For many, “no running in the house” is not just a saying but also a major concern if their home has tile or stone, especially with young children. In most homes, it’s common to have tile or stone used somewhere and, when it comes to your family, you can never be too careful. As with most things, there are pros and cons, but you’ll be surprised at the safety benefits that are offered these days. Tile and Stone don’t have to be a safety concern any longer. This is where choosing the right type, for the right area is key. We have many options today that weren’t available in the past and now, many feature non-slip surfaces. There are quite a few options that have built in slip resistance and even more that are created with finishes that make them perfect for high traffic areas. Most of the tile and stone that we carry are created with systems like non–slip, skid proof, or anti-slip to ensure the safest surfaces for customers. Perfect for your active brood and for those members who just don’t know how to slow down. Another wonderful benefit is how easy these new surfaces are to clean and

maintain. For those concerned about germs, there is a huge advantage to these new types of tile and stone. Unlike other materials that hold stains, dust, smells, and germs among other things. The right type of tile and stone surfaces won’t hold on to any of these, a simple wipe or spray will clean it up beautifully. It’s hard to ignore how easy it is to clean and keep fresh year after year, making tile and stone material perfect for families, allergies, bachelors and so many others. You can breathe easy using them in your home. Another benefit that many people don’t think about is durability. When other materials are cracking, fraying, warping, etc.… tile and stone will last for years to come. This is a wonderful benefit to your family’s safety. Things that wear away or break over time are not just another thing you have to fix but also a potential hazard for your family. Let your brood loose and let us help you ease your worries with tile and stone. We can assist you every step of the way, from choosing your right option for you right down to its installation to ensure that it’s done right, and done right the first time.

Spring is in the Air Expert Advice from EMS Ltd., (a member of the BAC Group of Companies) As we head into spring, I’m sure you know at least someone who caught the latest nasty ‘flu bug’ that was going around this winter. And while some of us tried our best to avoid germ-filled surfaces, others sorely regretted not getting the flu shot before the season started. Note to self: “Flu shot next November”. On top of that, we’re still dealing with the side effects of Bermuda’s damp winter weather – mouldy shoes, handbags, walls…the list goes on. Another note to self: “Cupboard heaters”. So as you look forward to the warmer summer days ahead, don’t forget (and sorry to put a damper on it) the pollen counts, humidity and…more mould. This time, forget about the ‘note to self’ - prepare ahead of time to avoid the frizzy days and itchy, sneezy nights by cleaning your house in a different, more effective way: “Install a Steril-Aire!”

Germicidal Ultraviolet Emitter Solutions

Steril-Aire is a germicidal UVC emitter that you can easily install in your air-conditioning system to improve the indoor air quality of your home. The AC system’s damp, dark environment is a perfect breeding ground for mould and bacteria, which the UVC Emitter eliminates, including viruses and debris. And that’s not all – one of these magical UVC wands also helps to lower energy costs by improving HVAC system heat transfer and increasing net cooling capacity.

Humidity

Humidity refers to the amount of water vapour in the air and promotes mould and dust mite population growth, which are both indoor allergens that can set off allergic sensitivity and trigger rhinitis and asthma. Usually naked to the human eye, these allergens live on countertops, table surfaces, carpet, pillows, and mattresses, as well as other surfaces. They also depend on warm temperatures and high humidity to live and grow so, to lower the mould and dust mite growth, keep the humidity inside your home at 50 percent or lower. Letting your air get too dry inside your house isn’t usually a problem in Bermuda, but if you do, skin irritation, difficulty breathing and static electricity are common problems that develop when the humidity is too low. Get ready for every season - for additional tips and information on how to create a safe, clean and healthy indoor environment, call Energy Management Systems at the BAC Group of Companies, on 292-0881 or visit their website at www.ems.bm or www.bac.bm.

BS&R How To:

keep your furniture in shape Expert Advice from BS&R Group

When it comes to wood in your house there are a lot of warning signs to know when you need to maintain, clean, update or renovate your piece. What is worse than when a hurricane comes and your shutters have swelled or rotted? Or it’s BBQ time and your patio furniture is rusted and flaky?

Nothing good can come from your furniture when it’s plagued by these. Besides the obvious health issues, mold and mildew are also not the prettiest sight. Making sure your furniture is properly cleaned and maintained ensures this won’t happen. We are also able to bring back to life many pieces that have seen better days.

These seem like small things but they can lead to bigger problems; Patio furniture is more like an accident waiting to happen and your shutters aren’t stopping any gale force winds. When you really think about it, your family’s safety is at stake. No one wants a child around rusty furniture or splinter filled floors, or even worse poor grandma sits on a chair that’s seen better days and it falls apart.

Warning Sign #3: Rotting or Decay

This is when you have to heed the warning signs and know when to strip and refinish your pieces to keep them in prime shape.

Warning Sign #1: Flaking, Rusting, and Splinters This is a sign most people don’t heed. What is some flaking paint anyway? But it can be a health hazard having pieces of paint everywhere and rust can be even more dangerous not to mention splinters. Taking the time to strip and refinish your pieces can alleviate this problem very easily.

Warning Sign #2: Mold or Mildew If there is one thing in Bermuda that we all battle with its mold and mildew.

The third warning sign is rotting or decay. A chair or table that could fall apart at any moment is completely useless. What’s worse is that for many pieces you may not even know the rot is there or that it’s as bad as it is. Take the time to check for rot, even if it’s a small amount, and get it looked at. Your furniture could be saved rather than crumble apart.

Warning Sign #4: Broken or Missing Pieces The most obvious of signs but you’d be surprised how many people don’t get these fixed. Small breaks, scratches, dents, and other random wear and tear often get overlooked but they are vital to keeping your furniture in working order. Functionality is key in any piece be it wood or metal. As our founding service and namesake, our Stripping & Refinishing division continues to save clients time and money while setting the standard in Bermuda. So think about your family, think about your health, and think about your safety. Look for the warning signs now and bring your furniture back to life.
