2020 Renovations

So you’re thinking about bathroom renovations? With expert advice provided by Vince Hunt of DHPS Limited

Here’s what you should know before you start! You’ve probably been thinking about it for months, dreaming about the possibilities, flicking through magazines and pinning ideas on Pinterest. A bathroom renovation can be an exciting yet daunting project. We spoke with Vince Hunt from DHPS Limited, the winner of Island Property’s 2018 Best Plumbing Contractor Award, to see what you can do to relieve the stress from what should be an exciting and rewarding investment in your home. A bathroom refit is a serious endeavor that you’ll likely do only once. You can avoid these three most common mistakes in your bathroom redo.

it will look and how it will work. Know what you expect and communicate that to your tradespeople and then stick with it, because chopping and changing adds time and expense.

2. Thinking it’s Easy Clients can be lured into thinking that a ‘small change’ is not a big deal and it won’t cost a lot. As much as we wish that was true, it’s not. Even small things can be costly, and it all adds up. Small changes are the fastest way to blowout your budget.

3. Not Thinking for the Long-term

1. Poor Planning

Your new bathroom is something that you’re going to live with for another 30 years, so think of it as a permanent decision. When you’re selecting styles, shop around and think of its functionality 20 years from now. Balance practicality with style.

The most successful renovation projects are those that are properly planned. Do the research and know exactly what you want. Be very clear on the outcomes before you begin - how

Watching home repair TV shows can be inspiring but keep in mind that there will always be something else that’s new, so choose for a long-term fit, not only on fashion trends. Even in a small bathroom, replacing a tub, sink and toilet plus tiling and painting, you’re looking at a costly investment. Vince suggests protecting your investment by appointing a project manager for the renovation; it’ll save you time and money and will help to avoid some common mistakes. A project manager can help you with balancing design and implementation costs before you begin, and the professional insight can identify things that may impact the project before it becomes an issue. They will save you from the stress of coordinating each aspect of the job. Your bathroom renovation project will involve a number of tradespeople; plumbers, electrician, tiler, mason, painter and in some cases a carpenter. One task usually depends on another being complete, so it’s helpful to have someone coordinating your tradespeople to save you the hassle of managing multiple people and their schedules. They will create the schedule and ensure that everyone sticks to it. If you’re contemplating a bathroom renovation, consider the age of your plumbing and whether you have galvanized piping that needs to be replaced. Now would be the time to do that. Some customers decide to do the renovation because they have a leak and while they’re replacing the plumbing with Vince, they’ll make the most of the opportunity and update their outdated fittings for a new-look bathroom.

BATHROOM HACKS

Tips & tricks that YOU can do today to make your bathroom shine! CLEAN YOUR SHOWER HEAD WITH VINEGAR Vinegar is super handy for cleaning a wide range of things… and your shower head is one of them! If you’ve got a gunked up shower head to clean simply place a plastic bag of vinegar over the head of the shower and attach it with a sturdy elastic band. Walk away for an hour, come back, remove the bag of vinegar, quick polish and done.

PREVENT RUST Metal aerosol cans and bottles are notorious for leaving nasty meal rings on your counter tops and shower shelves. Better Homes and Gardens recommends that you try painting clear nail varnish on the bottom of your cans/bottles to help prevent stains. 2nd hack- for cans/bottles with flat tops, turn them upside down to prevent stains.

USE DRYER SHEETS TO CLEAN SOAP SCUM Don’t toss that used dryer sheet. Sprinkle it with a few drops of water, then use it to wipe away built-up soap residue on your shower doors. It works wonders on scummy surfaces. Dryer sheets contain ingredients that are designed to soften fabrics. Those same ingredients coincidentally soften soap scum, so it lifts right off the glass.

TRIM THE SHOWER CURTAIN Where the shower liner hits the tub and where it ripples, as a result of being too wide, are breeding grounds for mold and mildew. One simple solution: trim a few inches from the bottom and sides so it fits the tub perfectly without bunching. A careful 2-minute trim could save you some money and hours in cleaning.

PUT A SHELF ABOVE THE DOOR If you’ve got a tiny bathroom that lacks storage space, you know how hard it is to find a place to keep your towels. Make use of the space you do have by installing a shelf above the door for stacking towels (and if there’s any room left over, other bathroom supplies and toiletries).

AMPLFY YOUR SMARTPHONE Want to get better sound from your smartphone in your bathroom? All you have to do is grab any empty, clean, and dry paper cup and put your smartphone in it. It’s a simple trick that greatly amplifies the sound from your device. If you don’t have a paper cup, then you can try using a bowl instead. Or a coffee mug. Or a glass tumbler.

Twelve Tips

for a Healthier Holiday Expert Advice from Hannah Jones of Island Nutrition

During this time of year we are often surrounded by lots of lovely food and drink. Holiday parties with endless buffets, candies in the office, alcohol, mince pies, eggnog, pumpkin spiced latte – you name it, it’s around to tempt us! Did you know that some people eat their way through around 6,000 calories on Christmas Day alone? This is about three times more than the average person needs. And over the holiday season, many people gain around 5 pounds in weight, which is equal to an extra 17,500 calories! Don’t despair - the holidays don’t have to be a time for weight gain. Here are tips to enjoy the festive season and still fit into your favourite outfit on New Years’ Eve.

1. When grocery shopping, be like Santa, make a list and check it twice! Don’t be tempted to impulse buy. 2. With festive snacks, avoid the naughty and stick with the nice. Instead of candies, chocolates and chips try pretzels, plain popcorn, dried fruit and vegetable sticks with a tasty low fat dip, e.g., salsa or low fat free greek yoghurt with seasonings. 3. Before heading to parties, try eating something healthy and filling, so you’re not over hungry when you arrive. 4. Choose appetizers that are healthy and lower in calories, such as melon, smoked salmon or vegetable soup. 5. Fill up on vegetables (without adding butter!). A third to a half of your plate should be vegetables. 6. Despite being fattened up for this time of year, turkey is actually a lean meat- just remove the skin. (Don’t forget to trim the fat off other meats too!) 7. If you stick to smaller portions of desserts, your waistline may not end up like Santa’s! 8. The holidays are a time to be merry, but try not to overdo the alcohol. It contains lots of hidden calories, especially sweet cocktails, coolers and creamy liqueurs.

9. Choose low calorie mixers and sip your drink slowly so it lasts longer. 10. Try alternating each alcoholic drink with a glass of water or diet soft drink. 11. Rock around the Christmas tree to burn off any extra calories. Dance the night away to your favourite songs…or even whilst cooking for guests. 12. Go for a lovely family walk after your fabulous, festive feast. And don’t forget to pound the pavements during those seasonal sales! You can still enjoy this time of year with your family and friends if you follow these tips. Just don’t overdo those holiday treats. Remember, this is the season to celebrate with loved ones and friends - not an excuse to overindulge and undo all that hard work you’ve put in this year. Give yourself the gift of good health… and who knows you may influence those around you to kick start their own health plan too! Have a very happy and healthy holiday season. Become the Perfect Holiday Guest Expert Advice from Lindo’s Group of Companies It’s the season of holiday parties that can last all the way into January. That’s a lot of dip and egg nog! There are loads of tips out there for the holiday host but what about the guests? How many times have you been invited to a party and had no idea what to make or bring? Here are 4 Tips to help you become the perfect holiday guest: For those who find that cooking is a difficult mystery, you can’t go wrong with a tray. Simply order a cheese, fruit or meat tray in advance and pick it up the next day for an easy dish that works for any kind of party. They’re always a winner, and the plus is you can tailor it to the type of party that you are attending. We simply need 24 hours to make the tray of your dreams.

The Prepared Guest:

A party isn’t a party without cups, plates, napkins etc…Be that guest! It’s an easy choice for someone whose not the best cook and a great relief to a host who’s busy cooking up a storm and running around. Another type of prepared guest is one who makes sure they bring a tray or bowl for their dish. Another great tip is to bring your dish in sturdy tin foil or Tupperware you don’t mind leaving behind.

The Amateur Cook:

Try your skills at a simple party classic. There are many easy recipes for meatballs, artichoke dips, and Brie & jam dishes. Just grab the ingredients and throw them together to look like a pro in the kitchen and at the party. Our favorite dish is smoked salmon and capers and onions on a bagel bite or small rye toast. Simple and easy to make they are always a favorite at parties and look fancy too!

The Busy Guest:

The holidays can be hectic for many people so for those with little time to invest in thinking of what to make or bring to a party there are a lot of simple no-brainer choices to pick from. No one has ever shirked at a good bottle of wine or rum & egg nog. If you don’t know much in the wine department, ask a staff member for some recommendations. Or grab some dip and chips or veggies for a healthier dish. Another easy choice is going with a shrimp cocktail. Pick one up and you’re on your way.
