Hurricane
Season 2019 In Bermuda, we’re Hurricane experts - or so we think! When June rolls around, we know it’s the time to start getting prepared. But really - it’s August when we all really start to get a little nervous. September and October have traditionally been when storms have hit, and maybe we’ve got a little complacent! We want to give you a little more encouragement to be prepared this hurricane season becuse now is the time!
our Top 10 Tips... 1. Hurricane winds can cause trees and branches to fall, so before hurricane season trim or remove damaged trees and limbs to keep you and your property safe (see BELCO article on Page 9). Assess the rest of the property for areas of weakness; loose railings, gates and light fixtures can cause property damage during high winds.
6. Evaluate areas that may be prone to flooding and ensure storm drains are clear. Be sure you have a place to put all your outdoor furniture, equipment and pool items in the event of a storm.
7. In terms of food, there’s a good chance the power will go out so stock up on food that does not need to be refrigerated. Yes, this means junk food. Enjoy your free pass to binge eat Ben & Jerrys, you don’t get opportunities like this much anymore. Just get ready to burn off the hurricane fifteen after the storm passes, yes that’s a thing.
2. Create that perfect playlist! Sit down and organize your favorite music into a playlist that pumps you up. Then dance the night away!
3. Host your friends so you’ve got company during the storm. Make sure there is enough space for everyone to comfortably sleep (as some storms last overnight). Ask everyone to come early to ensure they make it before the storm hits and you’ve got extra people to double check all the safety precautions. 4. Build or restock your basic disaster supplies kit, including
8. Have an indoor picnic - Light a candle and pop some champagne
to turn this evening into a romantic outing with your sweetie. Don’t forget the picnic blanket and wicker basket!
9. If you have generators, ensure they are properly maintained, tested and that there is an adequate supply of fuel available.
10. Learn how to make the perfect Hurricane: Batten down the hatches and ride out an approaching storm safely whilst enjoying this fruity and festive cocktail.
food and water, a flashlight, batteries, chargers, cash, first aid supplies, and most importantly the rum.
5. Occupy the kids by having them decorate t-shirts – gather up some supplies (markers, paints, stencils and any other art supplies) and get creative. They can spend hours designing their own shirt they can wear over and over again.
Ingredients: 2 ounces light rum 2 ounces dark rum 2 ounces passion fruit juice 1 ounce orange juice Juice of a half a lime 1 tablespoon simple syrup 1 tablespoon grenadine Orange slice and cherry for garnish
Squeeze juice from half a lime into cocktail shaker over ice. Pour the remaining ingredients into the cocktail shaker. Shake well. Strain into a hurricane glass. Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice. 6 Island Property News • Hurricane Season 2019 • www.ipn.bm
Preparing for Stormy Times Expert Advice From Larenzo Ratteray of BF&M Preparation is vital when dealing with the unexpected. As another hurricane season gets underway, it is important that you take the time to prepare while all is calm, so that you can limit potential damage should the wind blow.
Check Your Policies The first step to being covered during a storm is to make sure your insurance policies are up to date. If you’ve purchased new outdoor furniture or completed renovations on your home, check that these are reflected in your policies. Rebuilding costs tend to rise over time so you should review your “sums insured” annually to ensure you have adequate coverage. If necessary, arrange a survey of your property. When considering your “contents sum insured”, use this rule of thumb: include anything you’d take with you if you moved house – including items such as curtains and rugs. If your sum insured is not sufficient at the time of a claim, your claim payment may be proportionately reduced.
Understand Your Coverage Know your benefits. Many policy owners are not aware of all the benefits on offer through their insurance. BF&M, for example, includes cover for loss of rent, or the cost of alternative accommodation resulting from storm damage. There are also allowances for limited pet coverage, removal of building debris, replacement of spoiled food in freezers or of fresh water contaminated by cause of a windstorm or flood. Review your policy carefully for conditions and exclusions. Unoccupied homes, satellite dishes, solar panels, docks, and sheds are subject to special conditions. If the risks for which you seek protection are not disclosed, this could limit your pay out in the event of a claim.
Understand Your Deductible A deductible is the amount of money that a policy owner is responsible for paying in the event of a claim before the insurance company makes a payment. For example, if your deductible is $1000, and you make a claim for $5000, you will pay $1000 and your insurance provider will pay $4000. Deductibles apply to building and contents damage caused by windstorms, earthquakes or floods. While you can reduce your annual premium by selecting a higher deductible, make sure you select an amount that you can afford to pay if you have to claim. By increasing your deductible, you are effectively self-insuring for an increased amount of money.
Make a Family Plan – and Practice It! Think ahead and prepare emergency lists and numbers now. Post emergency telephone numbers by your phones and make sure your children know how and when to call 911. Have an FM radio tuned to 100.1 mHz - and remember to replace its batteries. If needed, purchase battery power packs for cell phones. Prepare a hurricane emergency kit with your family and have all items in an accessible area known by all members of the household. Include safety and emergency gear including flashlights and extra batteries, a minimum of a three-day supply of drinking water and non-perishable food for each person. Be sure to have any medications that are needed in advance. And if your family includes pets, make sure your emergency kit includes food and supplies for them.
Secure Your Property If a storm is approaching, board up windows and glass doors or install your storm shutters to prevent breakage and possible further damage inside the property. Secure outdoor furniture, barbeques, large yard tools or toys, or any loose object that could become a dangerous missile in hurricane winds. If you are undergoing construction, make sure all machinery, rocks and debris are safely secured. Leave your vehicle less vulnerable to damage by parking it in a safe spot on your property.
If You Have a Boat, Insure It No matter how careful you are, events beyond your control can happen. Marine insurance covers your boat in case of collision, fire, theft, sinking at the mooring, weather, and liability. Without insurance, you risk facing having to pay for damage on your own, and extensive damage may be unaffordable. If your boat is insured, be sure to keep up with the maintenance and go over the details with your insurance representative so that you know what is and is not covered.
One Last Note If you can, remember to check on the elderly, infirmed or parents with young children who may have trouble preparing and require help. Bermuda has a history of resilience in stormy times; when we work together and look out for each other, we are that much stronger in the face of adversity. Cut your losses
by trimming your trees
Expert Advice From BELCO
When you move into a new home, you may wonder how it will fare in a hurricane. Are you more or less likely to lose power in your new location? You might be surprised to learn that your own actions can have a very real impact on the likelihood of a power outage in your area. The simple act of trimming trees ten feet away from power lines vastly reduces the number of outages experienced year-round, especially during a hurricane.
Of course, before trimming the trees next to a power line, the power line in question must be disconnected for safety reasons. BELCO and the customer will choose a date and start time, usually three weeks from the date of request. It is crucial, therefore, not to leave your tree trimming to the last minute. Hurricane season is already underway so now is the time to make sure that your trees are clear of any power lines.
While strong winds may cause some power outages, trees falling on power lines cause the largest number of power outages in Bermuda. Even in years where we are not directly hit by a hurricane, trees result in power outages affecting thousands of customers. In 2018, trees were the cause of 32 non-hurricane related power outages that resulted in 3,407 customers losing power for a combined time of 78 hours.
Please visit www.belco.bm for more information about hurricane safety.
The good news is that many of these outages are preventable. Armed with this knowledge, BELCO works to ensure trees are cut back near main line circuits and some branch lines. This proactive approach has prevented outages on main line circuits since the programme launched in 2011. On private property the responsibility for keeping trees trimmed and cut back from power lines lies with property owners. If a property owner is unsure of whether a particular tree is their responsibility, they should call BELCO at 299-2800 or email treetrimming@belco.bm for clarification.

Hurricane Plan Expert Advice From Heather Chilvers
Bermuda is no stranger to hurricanes. From the storm in 1609 that sent the Sea Venture crashing into our reefs, they have been a part of life on the Island. Hurricane Season runs from 1st June to 30th November, but recent data suggests that the chance of Bermuda being hit by a hurricane is highest in September and October. Hurricane Emily Bermuda’s worst hurricane for decades scored a direct hit on the island in 1987. Hurricane Erin 2001, Hurricane Fabian in 2003, Fay and Gonzalo in 2014 and Hurricane Florence brushed by in 2018. The best way to keep on top of the latest news on tropical activity is to listen to the radio ‘Government Emergency Broadcast Station on FM 100.1’, watch the evening news, check the internet or get updates from Bermuda Weather Service. As of April 2019 the Department of Communications issued an App (which is free) for download onto your phone called ‘Bermuda Tree Frog’. This application will alert all users to news and alerts posted by the Bermuda Government, and includes any alerts posted by the Emergency Measures Organization that the public needs to be urgently aware of.
Hurricane Florence 2018 While any type of storm can cause damage, tropical storms and hurricanes are particularly dangerous. They both fall under the term ‘tropical cyclone’, for their circular air movement over warm, tropical waters. The difference is based on wind speed. Once a storm watch or warning has been issued, and is within hours of its closest approach, it is recommended that you secure your house, property and vehicles based on the wind strength and direction details. Hurricanes tend to form in the south east of the Atlantic and then move west towards to Caribbean and the southeast cost of the US. They then move north, following the path of the Gulf Stream, bypassing Bermuda. Despite this, Bermuda is far better prepared for hurricanes than the US and most Caribbean islands. Strict building regulations ensure that all occupied buildings are built with stone or concrete. The vast majority of hurricanes result in minimal structural damage. There will usually be power outages (as many power lines are overhead) and damage to trees and vegetation. Only direct hits, very rare given the small size of the island, cause significant destruction. This time of year (August) is a good time to: • Prepare and repair your house for hurricane season. • Make sure your property and vehicle insurance are up to date. •L ook at your family plans and update them with any changes to phone numbers etc. •T ake stock of all medical prescriptions that your family and pets require and ensure you have at least 10 days supply on hand.

Expert Advice from Hannah Jones of Island Nutrition When we know a hurricane is a strong possibility it is important to have a plan to feed yourself and your family for a few days. Aim for 3 meals and 2-3 snacks daily for each person in your household. Most importantly make sure you have enough clean drinking water to last everyone in the household for a few days. Approximately 1 gallon per person, per day is a sensible target. If you have a special dietary need, rely on nutritional supplements or require tube feeds (or medications) then make sure you are stocked up with sufficient amounts of these to see you through
Improving Access to High Quality Nutritional Care Registered Dietitians providing Medical Nutrition Therapy Prevent and Manage Disease Paediatrics: including poor growth, behavioural issues, overweight, constipation, allergies, tube feeding and weaning Adults: including GI, cardiovascular, kidney disease, inflamation, obesity, cancer, wound healing, pregnancy and the elderly

at least 2 weeks in case of supply disruptions. This is equally important if someone suffers from food allergies and intolerances and infants who require formula feed (don’t forget the bottled water, or buy some pre-made formula if you can afford it). In the weeks heading up to peak hurricane season, try to use up some of the more perishable foods in your freezer so that they are not wasted if the power does go out for a prolonged period. Healthy food choices to keep in cupboards for hurricanes and other natural disasters include canned tuna, chicken or salmon (in water), nut butters, canned beans (in water), Granola bars, air popped popcorn, wholewheat crackers, dry cereals e.g. shredded wheat, Weetabix, and cous cous. Freeze a carton or 2 of your milk of choice and this will be good to use as it defrosts if the power goes out. Certain fresh fruits and vegetables will keep outside of the fridge for a few days such as apples, pears, oranges, bananas, carrots, celery, cauliflower and brussel sprouts. Canned fruit in juice or canned veggies in water are also good choices but choose small/ single serving containers so the leftovers don’t spoil. If you have access to a BBQ/grill then you can buy some foods that are grillable such as chicken sausages, meats, fish, corn, potatoes, zucchini, peppers and mushrooms. Remember do not attempt to use your grill inside of the house! Make sure you have the cooking and eating supplies to manage without power (and running water) for a few days such as a manual can opener, aluminum foil, matches, paper towels, paper/ bamboo plates and cutlery and hand sanitizer. Food safety: If the power goes out, keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. Plan to put items you may need in a well-chilled ice chest so that you do not need to open the refrigerator door. A refrigerator will keep food cold for up to 4 hours, if it is unopened. A full freezer will keep the temperature for up to 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed. You will need to discard any perishable food (such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs or leftovers) that has been above 40°F for two hours or more. If you are concerned about your or your child’s nutritional health and feel you would benefit from support from a Registered Dietitian please contact us at Island Nutrition on 295-4082 or at info@islandnutrition.bm.

Expert Advice from The Department of Health
Is Your Workplace a Baby–Friendly Workplace? As a working mother, returning to work after having a baby can be overwhelming - from choosing an appropriate child care provider, parting with your baby, maintaining breastfeeding, among other things. The World Health Organization recommends exclusively breastfeeding infants for the first six months of their life, and to continue breastfeeding - along with offering complementary foods up to two years of age and beyond. A recent survey in Bermuda found that approximately 16% of mothers are exclusively breastfeeding at six months, with some mothers reporting that returning to work was a barrier for them in trying to meet their goal. This is, nevertheless, an increase - from 1% in 2001, evidencing improvements within our community.
infants and families, as well the national economy. A supportive employer can help a mother reach their individualized breastfeeding goal by being a baby friendly workplace. This involves having a breastfeeding policy for staff, a safe space for mothers to express milk, allocated breaks for expressing and appropriate facilities. A systematic review of current literature, found that all employers are able to implement a breastfeeding support program that aligns within their company’s budget and resources; with some companies offering more extensive programs than others.
Currently in Bermuda, some mothers are returning to work as early as 6 – 8 weeks postpartum. This means that employers are in an strong position, with an opportunity to support and increase breastfeeding rates in Bermuda; benefiting mothers, their
