Hurricane
Season 2018 In Bermuda, it feels like we have it down to a fine art and for many, a hurricane doesn’t bring up much cause for concern. But complacency could mean disaster for home owners and renters alike. It’s time to make life easier when a storm comes in raging. From powering up to planting in the right areas of your yard, knowing the process for a damage claim or simply entertaining yourself during the storm, we’ve got the answers! Make sure you’re prepared and then step back and enjoy the rest of the summer!
Hurricane Prep for Maximum Entertainment By Jacqueline Ward, Island Property News
1. Power up – What would we do without our devices right?!
During a storm it can be heartbreaking for them to die when you know you can’t power them up again. With a little storm prep you don’t have to go without. The easiest step: Take the time to fully charge all your devices from phones to laptops to tablets. Next Level... Grab some portable batteries or chargers. These little guys are perfect to use when you don’t have access to a plug or power. With these guys you’ve got an extra boost once your devices go out.
2. Social Media – These days it’s all about staying
connected and informed. With the power out social media is the perfect way to stay informed on how the storm is progressing. Make sure to follow Bermuda Weather Service and other emergency services during the storm for updates and info. Finally use social media to stay connected with friends and family throughout the storm and let them know you’re safe. Next Level... If power levels drop on your device or data is maxed out, go old school with a wind up or battery powered radio to stay informed.
3. Netflix Binge – A somewhat new feature on Netflix is
their download option. A great way to pass through the storm when you’re internet is down is binge watching your favorite shows. If you know a storm is coming pre-download a bunch of movies and shows to help you pass the time no internet required. Curl up and enjoy!
6 Island Property News • Hurricane Season 2018 • www.ipn.bm
Next Level... Save some of your favorite movies or shows on a USP so you can take them anywhere. Plug them into your TV or laptop for instant entertainment.
4. Max Power Saving - There is a lot you can do to save power on your devices and keep them running for longer. Turn off vibrations, dim your screen, disable GPS, turn off notifications, close unnecessary apps and even turn airplane mode on. All will keep your devices lasting longer. Next Level... Switch them off when you’re not using them. We know it’s a shocking concept but switching it off for a couple of hours can save more battery than leaving it on sleep or inactive mode.
5. Games & Books – There are a number of games and
books you can download to entertain you through the storm. If you don’t have a lot of board games, many popular ones can be downloaded through your App store. From Catan to Heads Up to Pandemic to Scrabble & backgammon you’ve got ton’s of games at your fingertips. Next Level... If you’ve got a VR headset there are some cool games you can partake in. Our favorite is “Keep Talking & Nobody Explodes” where 1 person is in a VR world with a bomb trying to diffuse it and the rest of the group is outside with the manuals trying to talk them through it. Definitely a group activity you can all get invested in!
Lost in the Claims Process? How I went from overwhelmed to confident with these easy tips from the Freisenbruch Meyer Group
We’ve all been through enough storms to feel like we could do them with our eyes closed. It’s easy to feel like we’re invincible to a hurricane because we deal with them so often. But with all the planning and preparation, it’s shocking and frightening when there is actual storm damage to your OWN home. What do you do next? For me, when a massive tree came down and crashed through our large bay window, I truly was overwhelmed about how much damage this would cause. As the rain and wind continued to blow, I began to be more and more concerned about the insurance coverage I had bought for my home. Luckily, the storm was over soon after, but I didn’t know what to do next. I had a living room full of water and outside debris and no idea how bad the damage truly was. Thankfully my insurance provider, Freisenbruch Meyer Group (FMG), makes up to date hurricane announcements on their website, social media and on the radio throughout and after a storm. So I knew to call them right away. Their staff were already in position to assist and support their clients in the claims process. It was all hands on deck for the FMG team and that reassured me every step of the way. I called Freisenbruch Meyer and one of their helpful and concerned staff members gave me some vital tips that I wish I had done BEFORE the storm. But luckily I had electricity and internet access this time around. I wont be waiting this long next time! 1. First and foremost they suggested I download their easy to use Claims App (either on IOS or Android). It was a great tool that allowed me to capture photos, write a description, and send my details directly to their claims team from my phone. I was able to download the app and submit my claim immediately. 2. FMG also stressed the importance to continue documenting the damage. They suggested I take plenty of pictures and chronicle everything that had transpired in a journal. This allowed their claims team to better understand how the
damage occurred and what everything looked like right after the storm. I also made sure to not throw away any valuable items that had been destroyed until the claims team had reviewed and/or surveyed everything. 3. The FMG team also instructed me to start the clean up process. Until I could get a contractor, basic repairs were necessary. This required some materials to secure the window and protect the living room area. FMG informed me to hold on to any receipts for such since they could possibly reimburse me for it. As significant work was needed to fully repair the window, they suggested I talk with their claims team again before taking action and to keep track of all expenses throughout the repair process. 4. One of the biggest tips FMG provided was to keep a continued diary of damanges throughout the days to come. It was important that I kept an accurate description of the damages at all times. They explained, in some cases, hidden erosion and destruction usually surface at a later date and its best to have a reference point as time goes on. Having this information provided a better understanding for FMG and greatly assisted during the settlement process of my claim. In the end, a situation that originally overwhelmed me turned out to be quite straightforward and reassuring. We can be as prepared as we can be for a storm but the unexpected does happen. Knowing easy tips and steps to follow ahead of time, has now provided me the encouragement I need in case I ever went through this frighteneing experience again. I even shared my story with family and friends and they too have switched their home and car insurance to the Freisenbruch Meyer Group. Before the next big storm, I am glad to know my entire family and friends are in good hands as well. Thank you to the entire team at Freisenbruch Meyer Group.

Protect Your Outdoor Spaces during the Storm
If you’re like us you love your outdoor spaces. We get so much use out of them all summer and more. So it’s only natural we also want to protect them over hurricane season. But what can you do to protect your green space? Turns out, a lot! According to Home Depot and University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agriculture there are some practical things you can do to protect your outdoor spaces during a storm.
Right Tree - Some trees are prone to more storm damage than
others. For example, trees that are shallow-rooted in soft soil have a tendency to topple over in high winds. Suggested wind-resistant varieties include sabal palms and smaller palm varieties such as manila and pygmy date. Carefully decide on the type of tree you plant in your yard.
Right Place – Choose varieties of trees that are well-suited for
your landscape. Plant larger trees away from your home, power lines, and other structures. This reduces the risk of branches—or of trees themselves—falling on your home or knocking down power lines.
Prune - Thorough and frequent pruning can help make your
landscape look nice. But, proper pruning is also a good way to help prevent property damage in the event of a potential storm.
Grouping – Planting groups of mixed trees together can greatly
enhance wind resistance. The trees buffer each other as well as your property and other landscape plants.
Flower Beds – consider using mulch along flower beds and paths instead of rock or pea gravel. During a storm the high winds can pick up the rocks and make them projectiles, often breaking windows.
LAST-MINUTE HURRICANE PREP:
• Bring potted plants, hanging baskets, garden ornaments, tools and anything that could become airborne into a shed or garage. • Move containers too big to bring indoors to a protected area; lay trees in containers on their sides and cluster large pots together. • Stake trees by driving 2x4s deep into the ground and strapping them around the first few feet of trunk. Keep ties loose so trunks can move with the wind. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Speak to a landscaping professional or your property management company for recommendations on how you can prepare your landscaping for hurricane season. These experts will have plenty of insight and experience to share.

Back to Basics:
History of Hurricane Shutters Expert Advice from BS&R Group
Hurricane shutters are a staple here in Bermuda. We almost always have a window or shutter project going on at any one moment. In fact they are one of our main divisions here at BS&R Group. There is actually a lot of history and thought behind how shutters are made and what type is best to use on your home. So here are the basics….
Why were they created? Since windows were created there has always been some sort of covering to protect the home from the elements. The more sophisticated the windows the more sophisticated the covering. From animal hides to nailing boards over the windows to composite hurricane shutters, shutters have evolved. Hurricane shutters appeared for duel purposes: First to protect windows from being broken during storms and second to regulate the light and privacy of the home. They are vital for not only keeping the elements out but also to decreasing the chance of a roof collapse created by the negative pressure caused by high velocity wind flowing over a building’s roof.
How are they built? The most common shutters we see in Bermuda are functional fixed or operable louvered shutters. They either hinge on each side of a window or at the top and swing closed when necessary.
Fixed or operable louvered shutters, basically mean that the shutters are either fixed on a hinge or can be mounted on tracks and can be opened and closed when needed. Shutters usually consist of a frame of vertical stiles and horizontal rails. Set within the frame are louvers that can open or close the rails. Many operable louvered shutters also have horizontal rails or slats that can be opened or closed as well as the shutter as a whole.
What are they made of? Shutters can be made of a variety of materials from aluminum to fiberglass to PVC to steel. However our preference (and we may be biased here) is wood. Our standard material to use now for both shutters and windows is Accoya wood. Much like it’s composite counterparts, Accoya offers advantages over regular wood shutters such as resistance to twisting, splitting, and rotting. It’s a perfect material for a climate like Bermuda. Next time you’re using your shutters, take the time to really appreciate them. They not only bring beauty to your home but offer so much more than that. For how to revitalize your shutters visit our showroom at 99 Middle Rd, Devonshire or call 237-2886.
