Where do you find your contractors? The overwhelming answer (no surprise here) is - word of mouth. A third party recommendation remains the way to go. It gives you feedback based on real and tested service and satisfaction based on results. 92% of our Realtors used word of mouth or referrals to find their next contractor!
What type of contractor do you seek after the most? If you are a General Contractor - Listen Up! Our Realtors let us know you are the most sought after type of contractor on the island. As a “jack of all trades”, it’s not surprising that Realtors and their clients would need a contractor like you to call on. Painters and Small/Odd Jobs came a close second as a sought after contractor. Make sure to get yourself out there so they know where to find you.
What type of contractor do you have a hard time finding? For many of our participants the contractor that they have the hardest time finding is a Small/Odd Job Handyman. There was an

almost unanimous vote that finding someone who did small or odd jobs was nearly impossible on the island. Many have a hard time finding a good Handyman and you don’t hear about them often. So get out those business cards and hit the streets. Let them know you’re out there!
What’s your favorite type of contractor to work with? With so many important qualities you would want in a contractor, it was hard to narrow down just a few. The most favorite type of contractors our Realtors liked to work with was surprisingly smaller companies, preferring the attention to detail and customer service that they are better able to give. An honest contractor was also among the top favorite, followed by reliable, communicative, and knowledgeable.
What is the number one quality you look for in a contractor? Reliability was our Realtors number one quality with a whopping 70% of the votes. 23% felt that experience was key and knowledge of the trade was also in the mix with 7%.

There are many qualities that people look for in a contractor. Indeed many of our readers who participated in this year’s Contractor Awards survey listed a number of traits that qualify a good contractor from a bad one. From knowledgeable to honest right down to cost, there are a number of factors to take into consideration when choosing the right contractor for your project.
Where do you find your contractors? Not too surprising for a small island, over 85% of our responses were via word of mouth and referrals. Somewhat different from our Realtor responses, many of our readers said that they also look for their contractors via social media.
What type of contractor do you have a hard time finding? We know everyone needs a contractor of some kind at some point... but is it always easy to find one? Much like our Realtors,

our readers agreed that the hardest type of contractor to find is one that handles the small jobs/handyman. It seems the island is in big need of contractors who are around to do small jobs and we can’t seem to find them! Some other types of contractors in demand were plumbers, carpenters and electricians. Another popular response, which should be noted, was “a reliable one”. Reliability seems to be at the top of the list when taking on a new contractor. Having someone who will show up and complete the job on time and as quoted is a major factor. In a market where word of mouth is key – a Contractors reputation is of the highest importance.

While all of these qualities are necessary in a good contractor, two stood out over the rest. While one would think that a contractors rates would come into play, as well as their availability to do the job – they both had almost no importance to our respondents. Actually, it was a very close tie between reliability and experience. It was almost fifty – fifty on which was more important but reliability won out by a fraction. Again our readers felt they would prefer someone who is reliable and will ensure that their project be completed well and on time.

master Carpentry HACKS! Expert Advice from BS&R Group
As contractors, we are used to utilizing our skills and knowledge to produce beautiful pieces. Many of our clients see the beauty and quality in our work and quite often we’re asked for tips on creating and maintaining these pieces. So here are our top 11 tips to carpentry mastery:
6. Polish your furniture approximately every six months using a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and rubbing the polish in the direction of the grain.
7. When hammering, use a clothespin to hold the nail in place and save your fingers from some torture.

4. Do your research when it comes to how to clean your piece. Depending
on what type of wood or finish was used, cleaning methods could be slightly different. Make sure to ask when purchasing the piece or test polishes, waxes, or other cleaning products in a small hard to see area first.
5. Use a tennis ball to help you sand. Wrap a piece of sandpaper around the

If you use a putty stick, wipe it across the hole and smooth the surface with your finger. If you plan to finish or refinish the wood, let the putty dry for at least a week before proceeding further.
