Ah... the great outdoors! A place of greenery, fresh air, and sunshine - who doesn’t want to get out there and enjoy it? From a balcony to a patio to backyard, deck or garden we’ve all got our favourite place to hang out in. With so many people vying for those outdoor spaces, it’s time to think about what areas you can create for each of your family members so they all get to enjoy the outdoors.

For Him:

For most men the outdoors is their domain. The backyard and deck are usually the territory for a “guys guy”. But with roommates, kids, family or partners taking over it’s hard to claim an area just for you. Here are some areas you can create - just for him:

BBQ

The first necessity in an outdoorsman’s arsenal is of course, the barbeque. We’re surprised these aren’t attached to the hip of most men but now that the weather is getting better you can return to the grill a happy camper. With the right setup you can do much more than cook steaks in your outdoor space. The right grill area can not only help you entertain but also give you a space to enjoy and master.


Outdoor Kitchen

If you want to build on your grill area an outdoor kitchen is where the action is. An open-air kitchen with food prep areas, a sink, fridge, or even a wood-fired oven can not only save you time going back and forth between indoors and out but also provide you with a space for entertaining. Whether it’s in the back yard in the suburbs or on a rooftop in the city, outdoor kitchens have grown in popularity because cooking al fresco feels less like a chore and instead more of a pleasure.

Bar Anyone?

For many in Bermuda a bar at home is a fun necessity. So a great outdoor idea for him is the addition of an al fresco bar. These are easy to build and set up depending on how elaborate you want to go. From a full scale built-in bar to a simple cart or wine stand it is a great central gathering place as well as somewhere to relax after a long day. Entertaining friends or having a date with a loved one this is a perfect area for those guys out there.

Garden

This is a pretty standard one, being a traditional area for the ladies. But besides the perennials, the greenery and the foliage, the garden is morphing into something a bit different these days. More and more people are growing their own food, everything from a small herb garden to a full on mini farm in their backyard. Sustainable living is a growing trend for those who have the space. Creating a small plot to grow tomatoes, carrots, leafy greens, beans, and a whole plethora of fruit and veggies not only saves money but is also great for the environment.

Reading Nook or Art Space

Can you say she-shed? These kinds of areas are becoming wildly popular lately. Who says a shed is just for tools anymore? Utilizing these spaces gives a much needed oasis to retreat to. She-shed’s can be virtually anything you want but most offer a light bright airy space that is comfortable and just for her. From a reading nook to art space these are great areas for a woman to spend time on her own and get away from everything.

Sun Spot

With the warmer weather upon us, the backyard is the place to be. Having a sunning area set up is the perfect place to relax in the warmth and take in the day. Think bigger with this one. Instead of a simple beach chair or lounger splurge for a sun bed, like you see at resorts and pools, or find something with padding and lots of space where you can spread out and get comfy. Ladies, treat yourself for an area you can enjoy all summer.

For the Family: With everyone’s busy schedule, it can be hard to find time to spend together as a family. That’s when it’s nice to have areas for everyone to hang out and spend some quality time. These areas will not only bring everyone together but they will also create a fun space!

Outdoor Cinema

We are lucky to be graced with warm weather year round so why not take advantage of it. Instead of plopping down on the couch after work why not have an outdoor cinema and take in a show under the stars. Grab some comfy weather proofed cushions or utilize that great sun bed to lay out on. Project it on a white sheet or bring the TV out and gather together. Make it special with some fairy lights and popcorn to have the full movie experience.

Gather Around the Fire

Adding an element of fire can instantly transform an otherwise ordinary space into one that is inviting and warm. Whether you choose an outdoor fireplace, a freestanding chimney, or a fire pit raised or campfire style you’re going to have a great time gathering round with the family. A backyard fire is just the thing to keep you outside on cool summer nights, and it can be a nice winter feature in more mild climates. So brush up on your Kumbaya and get out the smores!

Water Features

For an island like ours a water feature is a necessity. If you can’t afford a pool there are other ways to create an area to cool off when the weather gets too hot. Bringing a little splash to your space with a kiddie pool. Don’t knock em, these days kiddie pools are so much more evolved than back in the day when they were these hard 3 foot round pools deep enough to wet your ankles. You can find some pretty decent pools out there for anyone of your family members to cool off in. Think about the classic sprinklers if a pool is out of the question or look for another water feature or game you can all have fun with - sometimes you just can’t beat a slip and slide for a good time!

Outdoor areas come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. What kind of space you have is up to you but for most stone and tile are usually must haves. The benefits of stone and tile in an outdoor area are numerous. Besides being incredibly durable, they are also easy to clean and maintain making your outdoor area easier to enjoy. Most stone and tile (once properly sealed) are water and slip resistant which makes them perfect for the outdoors. Add in that you can get them in virtually any color, texture, design and size you want and you’ve got a great material to use for an outdoor space. With so many benefits and a variety of options the question arises: Where do you use tile in your outdoor spaces? And furthermore what tile should you use? Here are our top five areas to use tile outdoors, and which tile or stone works wonderfully in them.

Where: Walkways, patios, and decks

Stone and tile are the perfect flooring for the outdoors. Here durability is key. Most people go for a natural or basic look to complement their space or other features. However utilizing a mosaic or interesting floor design could offer your space something unique. Utilizing these materials here also helps to keep the heat away and offers a cool place to hangout.

What: Natural stone tiles such as our Mediterranean Shell Stone from Malta or a variety of Travertine stone from Turkey add elegance to any space. Tiles made to look like slate, brick or even wood have become popular replacements due to their easy maintenance, cost and longevity. Some ceramic products and slates are simply too soft to be used successfully outside. But porcelain and solid stones like granite, slate, marble, travertine, limestone and quartzite are good options. Where: The pool, water features, fountains, and outdoor showers

Utilizing a slip resistant tile or stone either inside these areas or surrounding them are vital. These areas need stone or tile to keep them safe and effective, but they don’t have to be boring. Use color and design to play them up and create depth and reflection.

What: One of the most common types of swimming pool tile is glass tiles or porcelain such as Newker or Crossville. Another popular choice for water features

are mosaic tiles like Bati Orient tiles or using stone to tile your swimming pool. This adds a natural element, similar to swimming in a lake or pond. Bengal Gris is a great anti-slip tile option.

Where: Your outdoor features (fireplaces, stairways, or feature wall)

Travertine - Ivory Filled/Honed from Turkey- 18” x 18”

This is where you really get to let loose with tile and stone. Tile or stone allows you to play with color, design, texture and size to create something really dynamic. Using them this way creates a focal point for your space and highlights your outdoor feature.

What: When it comes to features it’s all up to you on what you want to use, the world is your oyster! Outdoor wall tiles can be glazed or unglazed and for many feature areas glass or mosaic tiles are popular. Granite or stone tiles are also popular especially in fireplaces because they are so heat resistant.

Where: Entertainment areas & kitchens

For many, an entertainment area is a must have in any outdoor space and the outdoor kitchen is a popular commodity. Much like your pool and water features materials like tile and stone will keep your entertainment areas clean and easy to maintain. Use a backsplash or design around countertops and bar to give your space functionality and color. This will also allow you to create a focal point out of your entertainment area.

What: Porcelain tiles are much more suited for outdoor use than ceramic tiles. Not only do they not mildew or stain, but they also have such a low water absorption rate that they are near waterproof which is perfect for bar areas. For a good choice the natural qualities of granite make it one of the most commonly used stone for countertops in both indoor and outdoor kitchens as well. Where: Paths and driveways

Kind of an obvious place for tile or stone, but many people don’t consider it instead opting for gravel. You can create a more natural looking drive or pathway using the right stone and spacing.

What: Most tile will not work for driveways or pathways as the heavy traffic will crack or wear away the tile. The perfect material for these areas is stone. Heavy-duty flagstones or brick work well in these places. For smaller pathways, Travertine also works well. Travertine was used to build the Coliseum and many other famous structures worldwide, so we’re pretty sure it will hold up in your outdoor areas!

The old adage “you get what you pay for” is very true for teak furniture. Teak may be pricey but it is well worth it in the end. Spending the extra money means having furniture that will last well into your great grand children’s life.

TIP 1 - Most teak furniture comes with

a high price tag. But that is because they are built to last and be in a space for years, if not generations, to come. So if you are a person who moves a lot or likes to constantly redecorate it may not be the best option for you.

TIP 2 - Buy all your unfinished teak furnishings at the same time to ensure they’ll end up the same color. Or buy your teak already pre-weathered. This makes it easier to decorate your space, as the color you bought it will be the color it stays. TIP 3 - Teak furniture needs to be cleaned at least once a year to remove dirt, dust and stains. This is something you can do yourself but make sure to ask your vendor which detergent you should use based on the finish you’ve chosen. TIP 4 - The commonly named “Muskoka” chairs (the comfortable high backed chairs with wide arm rests and contoured seats) are by far the most popular teak furniture, however they’re actual name is Adirondack chairs. TIP 5 - Try to buy FSC-certified

teak. Buying sustainable wood allows ecosystems to thrive rather than be devastated by deforestation. The Forest Stewardship Council ensures your wood furniture is harvested responsibly and is good for the environment.

Let’s look at a few popular outdoor furniture pieces & features, and why they are perennial favorites.

The People’s Choice: The most common must-have outdoor furniture piece in Bermuda is the Adirondack a.k.a. Muskoka chair. A high-back chair with wide arm rests and a comfortable recline perfect for lounging in your backyard, deck, or dock. The teak wood Adirondack chair is by far the most popular chair requested by our clients, and we know why! Wooden pergolas can help to shade and cool an outdoor area, particularly if you integrate horticultural features. We have built several wooden pergolas for specific outdoor spaces, and recommend them for year-round usage in Bermuda. It is also necessary to have an outdoor space that is organized and tidy. Storage areas can be separate or integrated into your furniture; the latter a popular choice for smaller outdoor spaces. Regardless of the furniture or feature you decide to spend money on, the type of material is very important if you want to invest in a piece that will last beyond one season. Teak and Accoya wood products are recommended for custom built furniture, while offthe-shelf products should be made of marine-grade materials. Rain, sun, wind, bugs, pets, usage, etc. all affect your outdoor furniture, so keep these factors in mind when making a purchase. Finally, what is a space without accessories? Accessories pull everything together to create a space that is truly yours. From tables and planters, to fences and kitchen islands; your imagination is the limit and we can build your ideas. BBQ, summer, and ice-cold libations go hand-in-hand so the addition of an Outdoor Kitchen can add appeal, value and functionality to the living space. With a very simple design and build, you can create something that will encourage people to stay longer to enjoy the outdoor space, without having to traipse wet feet into the house, or interrupt the family pool volleyball tournament. Consider including a BBQ, mini fridge and ice machine as entertaining staples.

Don’t rain on my parade!

For more reasons than one, we fully endorse having a weather-proof porch covering as a part of the outdoor space. Whilst the pergola and sun awnings have appeal and benefit, a porch cover built from masonry, or painted concrete board over a pergola structure, makes the outdoor space weather proof from both rain and provides shelter from a relentless sun. Furthermore, when you are investing in additions such as your outdoor kitchen, you are best served to make sure it is covered from the elements. You can’t predict the weather, so make a space that has adequate coverage for when that downpour comes rolling in.
